The 10 Biggest Wings Found on Stock Sports Cars

There is an important reason why performance carmakers will often stick a wing, also known as a spoiler, to the rear of their automobiles. That reason is simply called downforce. As the name implies, it pushes down on the vehicle and keeps it planted on the road as it’s being driven at the very edge of performance limits.

The function in principle is very similar to an airplane wing—only this time, it’s in reverse. The air coming over the car flows beneath the wing, creating lower pressure underneath to force the car down (downforce).

For some automobile manufacturers, the wing adds to the overall aesthetics of the vehicle. Others care less about beauty and instead opt for the largest available wing that offers maximum benefits without too much compromise in overall performance.

Here, you will see some of the biggest wings ever fitted to sports cars, straight from the factory. You can decide whether each one serves the dual purpose of aesthetics and performance or if it’s purely a case of function over form.

#10: Bugatti Chiron Sport

The imperious Chiron Sport followed in the path of the Veyron Super Sport when it debuted in 2018 at the Geneva Auto Show. Here was another car capable of mind-numbing acceleration as it powered on to an electronically-restricted 261 mph top speed.

An impressive feat, no doubt, but another striking feature was how quickly it could scrub off all that forward momentum. The Chiron Sport needs less than 10 seconds and just 491 metres to come to a complete stop from 249 mph!

To achieve this, the 2.2-ton hypercar relies on powerful carbon-ceramic brakes and what has to be one of the largest stock rear spoilers out there today. That massive wing can generate almost 2,000 lbs of downforce when fully deployed. In addition to this crucial function, there’s no doubt the wing, especially in a raised position,  gives the Chiron a cool stance, adding to its overall appeal.

#9: 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The ‘RS’ badge on any Porsche sports car automatically implies that its natural habitat remains the race track while still remaining road-legal. This seventh-generation 911 GT3 RS is no different and was designed with a singular purpose: maximum performance.

Porsche approached this task with brutal efficiency, and at the time of the car’s debut, it was the most powerful naturally-aspirated Porsche ever made, with a 520-hp power output. That is enough to supply all the oomph this car needs—just like that huge rear wing, designed to help the car with downforce as it whips around corners or hurtles down straights.

The wing, made from carbon fibre, can also be manually adjusted to a ‘performance position,’ creating 40% more downforce than the previous generation 911 GT3 RS. When it’s not called upon to do its thing on the track, that wing is actually large enough to double as a very effective snack table between runs.

#8: Mercedes Benz AMG GT Black Series

As far as performance is concerned, this is AMG’s ‘top dog,’ at least until the arrival of the hotly anticipated AMG One. Everything about the AMG GT Black Series is designed to convey this impression, from its eye-watering $325,000 sticker price to the formidable 720-hp twin-turbo V8 tucked under the hood and the unique twin rear-wing setup.

The setup is not only manually adjustable, but the upper blade has an active aero element that tilts by as much as 20 degrees depending on the driving mode. Altogether, that wing produces as much as 880 lbs of downforce at 155 mph, helping the car stay planted on the road as the driver flirts with its redline.

#7: McLaren Senna

Let’s face it. The McLaren Senna is a pretty ugly supercar, but then again, McLaren did not design the car so we could all fawn over sleek lines and nice angles. No. The focus was on raw performance, and McLaren prioritized this over all else (except maybe if you consider their curious decision to add see-through doors).

The McLaren Senna pushes the boundaries of what a track-focused performance machine should be and manages to do so while remaining road-legal at the same time. A key reason the car handles so well is that humongous wing that almost looks like an afterthought, hanging over the rear end.

That wing changes pitch and helps the car increase downforce, trim drag, or act as an air brake when needed. The dynamics of the wing impressed Top Gear journalists so much they declared it the ‘Wing of the Year’ for 2018.

#6: 2017 Dodge Viper ACR

‘ACR’ stands for American Club Racing and is indicative of the purpose behind the design of this all-American race car. The 2017 Dodge Viper ACR was the last hoorah for the legendary sports car, and what a send forth it was!

This vehicle boasted custom tires, race-tuned suspension and a massive 8.4-litre V10 that generated 645-hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. Then there was an Extreme Aero Package that delivered almost 1 ton of peak downforce at top speed.

The most prominent part of that package is the massive adjustable dual-element carbon fibre rear wing. As you can see from the image above, the wing can also double up as a camp bed should you, for some reason, opt to spend the night in the open with your Dodge Viper ACR.

#5: Apollo Intensa Emozione

It’s hard to argue against the fact that the Apollo Intensa Emozione (Apollo IE) is one of the most extreme modern cars ever built. Intensa Emozione is Italian for ‘Intense Emotion.’ As the name implies, it is designed to invoke powerful feelings in you as the driver, passenger or just some passer-by gawking at that uber-aggressive profile.

You will immediately notice that gigantic top-mounted wing. Who wouldn’t? It’s not just there for ‘shock and awe,’ though. According to Apollo, it can generate a scarcely believable 2,976 lbs of downforce at 186 mph. That means the 2,755-lb hypercar can theoretically drive upside down, and if that ever happens in the real world, you can be sure that wing will have a primary role to play.

#4: Koenigsegg One:1

The Koenigsegg One:1 is a special car indeed, one that offers up approximately one horsepower for every kilogram of the car’s weight (hence the name One:1). What’s more? The Koenigsegg One:1 debuted with what was the world’s first top-mounted, active rear wing.

There is an entire video clip where Christian Von Koenigsegg explains just how unique the wing structure is. The wing moves through various settings as determined by the selected handling mode and throttle/brake use.

It is not your average-sized carbon fibre strip either. This wing is massive and extends well over the rear end of the car. Impressively, the entire structure weighs only 22 lbs, allowing for maximum performance with minimal compromise on the hypercar’s overall weight.

#3: McLaren P1

Have you ever seen a McLaren in race mode? The suspension lowers by 50mm, the rear spoiler rises to 11.8 inches and extends at a 29-degree angle. It reminds one of an attack dog, just straining at its leash and waiting for the ‘go!’ command.

That sweeping wing is one of the most distinguishable elements of the McLaren P1, and it makes a strong case for the fact that downforce does not have to be ugly. The wing has various automatic settings that help the hypercar produce up to 1,320 lbs of downforce. One has to see it in action to truly appreciate how impressive the setup is.

#2: 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona

The ‘69 Charger Daytona was one half of the famous Chrysler ‘Wing Cars’; the other half was the 1970 Plymouth Superbird. This car had the most prominent stock wing fitted on any vehicle during that period. Even today, the Charger Daytona has only a few rivals when it comes to that towering structure over the trunk.

The wing was the idea of a certain John Pointer, a rocket scientist who Chrysler later recruited. He was tasked with making the Charger go faster on the racing circuit, and the wing was one of his innovative ideas. It worked too. In 1970, the Dodge Charger Daytona became the first NASCAR racecar to break the 200 mph barrier.

#1: Porsche 911 (930 Turbo) ‘Whale Tail’

This ‘70s sports car is widely regarded as the first Porsche 911 Turbo and was one of the fastest production cars at the time, with a top speed of about 162 mph. The bemusing ‘Whale Tail’ nomenclature directly references the car’s flared rear stance and a huge spoiler that gave the car its distinctive look.

Like all modern performance cars, that wing directed airflow over the car. In addition, its position, directly above the engine bay, also meant that it vented air into the engine, ultimately improving its performance. The ‘Whale Tail’ spoiler was also known as ‘Tea Tray’ at some point in the life of the turbocharged sports car.

10 Supercar Concepts That Turned Out to Be Vaporware

There are countless failed concepts for every production-spec supercar that we get to drool over on public roads. As with any industry, introducing a new product is a gamble where success or abject failure depends on various factors.

Market reactions, design flaws, and production costs are just some of the reasons why supercar concepts are nixed before the final production stage—and while the practice is more prevalent among boutique carmakers, the big automobile names are by no means immune. Here, you will also find a few supercar concepts from established carmakers that never quite made it to production.

Vaporware Supercar Concept #10: Yamaha OX99-11

There was so much potential for the development of the Yamaha OX99-11, a street-legal Formula One car for the road. The project was conceived by Ypsilon Technology, a Yamaha subsidiary, and International Automotive Design (IAD), an English Engineering outfit.

The car community was understandably excited by this, and for good reason too. The Yamaha OX99-11 supercar had a unique tandem-style seating arrangement. However, its most impressive feature had to be the Formula One-derived engine, a screaming V12 that could rev to an insane 10,000 rpm!

It looked all set to power its way into production, but sadly, that never happened. After several delays, Yamaha decided to pull the plug on the project in 1994 due to budget constraints. Also, Japan was in the midst of a crippling economic crisis, and Yamaha was not sure if it would ever find customers for the OX99-11 with an expected final price tag hovering around $800,000.

Yamaha did build three functional OX99-11 prototypes, though, and today, they offer a glimpse of what might have been if the car had made it to full production.

Vaporware Supercar Concept #9: TVR Cerbera Speed 12

TVR is a British carmaker with a penchant for making extreme road performance cars with little regard for safety. That doesn’t sit too well with US regulators and explains why TVR vehicles are mostly banned in the country.

However, for a company like TVR, even the TVR Cerbera Speed 12 proved to be a little too much—and that’s saying a lot. The car initially started as a development project for a race car meant to compete in the FIA GT Championship.

However, regulation changes rendered the car obsolete before it ever got the chance to hit the tracks. The engineers changed direction then and decided to transform the Speed 12 into a road car.

At its heart was a formidable 7.7-litre V12 with an estimated power output of around 800-bhp. The carmaker accepted deposits from interested customers, and it looked like the project had the green light for production. That was until Peter Wheeler, then-owner of TVR and an experienced driver, took the prototype out on the road and concluded that the car was simply too powerful for the public roads.

It was a potential death trap; a possibility made even starker by the car’s lack of safety features. It marked the end of what could have been a real performance brute on the highways.

Vaporware Supercar Concept #8: Chrysler ME 4-12

Conceived by Chrysler in 2003, the ME 4-12 had what it took to become one of America’s greatest supercars. Instead, we were left wondering how a car with so much potential floundered and ultimately came to an inglorious end.

The public got its first full glimpse of the vehicle at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show, and Chrysler promised performance numbers that were on par with some of the best supercars of the day. The ME 4-12 was powered by a quad-turbo 6.0-litre AMG V12 that cranked out up to 850-hp. That provided enough juice for a 2.9-second sprint to 60 mph and an insane 6.0-second run time to 100 mph.

The top speed was over 240 mph, about the same as the legendary McLaren F1. The car’s performance, coupled with its eye-catching design, was the stuff of supercar dreams, but in 2005, Chrysler brought us all back to jarring reality with an announcement that the project had been cancelled.

Studies revealed that the development costs of the car, estimated to be in the hundreds of millions (US dollars), were unjustifiable at a time when Chrysler was still rebuilding. In hindsight, maybe they should have gone ahead with the ME 4-12 project, considering that they are still rebuilding today.

Vaporware Supercar Concept #7: Jaguar CX-75

The low-slung Jaguar CX-75 was the company’s attempt to reenter the supercar market after a trouble-ridden run for the Jaguar XJ220. The CX-75 was a hybrid-electric supercar concept capable of putting out a thumping 778-hp. It was developed in partnership with the Williams Formula One team.

The CX-75 had diesel-fed micro gas turbines that charged the batteries, which then supplied power to the four electric motors (one for each wheel). In May 2011, Jaguar decided to ditch this revolutionary technology and instead go for a limited CX-75 production run with a more conventional pairing of a forced induction petrol engine with the electric motors.

It was a step down from what was promised during the car’s reveal at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, but even then, Jaguar could not deliver. In December 2012, the carmaker cancelled the project altogether due to the global economic crisis.

A new twist in the tale emerged recently, in March 2021. A Hungarian company, Kinscem, has promised to revive the concept as a fully-fledged production vehicle. The carmaker has set a production date of 2023, but we are not holding our breath for this one.

Vaporware Supercar Concept #6: Lamborghini Asterion

The Lamborghini Asterion was far from your typical Lambo supercar when it was unveiled at the 2014 Paris Auto Show. For one, it was a four-door supercar. More importantly, it featured hybrid technology, which Lamborghini had traditionally shied away from.

The powertrain comprised a 5.2-litre V10 from the Lamborghini Huracan and twin electric motors driving the front wheels. The result was a family-sized supercar that boasted a combined output of 898-bhp.

Lamborghini was prepared to take a gamble on the Asterion, but a lukewarm reception to the supercar changed all that. However, the Asterion remains a concept that might still evolve as Lamborghini repositions itself for a future that’s not wholly dependent on gasoline engines.

Vaporware Supercar Concept #5: Lamborghini Cala

1994 saw the debut of the Ferrari F355, an entry-level supercar offering. Lamborghini needed a response as its own entry-level car, the Lamborghini Jalpa, was ageing and had been mediocre for most of its production life. That was when the idea of the Lamborghini Cala was born.

The concept was designed by famous Italian design house Italdesign and had a fully functional V10 power plant good for 400-bhp. The Cala was showcased at the 1995 Geneva Motor Show, and Megatech, the Indonesian-based company that owned Lamborghini at the time, seemed poised to put the Cala into production. Unfortunately, the plans were scuttled by crippling financial problems that culminated in Lamborghini’s takeover by Volkswagen Group.

This is one story that had a good ending, though. Volkswagen kept the dream of a V10 Lamborghini alive, and the Cala set the perfect foundation for the Lamborghini Gallardo. This supercar would go on to become one of the most successful Lamborghinis ever made.

Vaporware Supercar Concept #4: Apollo Arrow

Here’s another promising concept that never got to see the light of day. It was developed by Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus (SCG) and Apollo Automobili.

The Arrow was poised to fill the shoes left by the ill-fated Gumpert Apollo. It was a big ask, but the Arrow seemed capable, with a mid-mounted, Audi-sourced, twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 that put out as much as 986-hp and 737 lb-ft of torque.

The designers promised that the engine would be individually tuned to suit each buyer’s requirement but that a sub-3-second sprint and 224 mph top speed were entirely feasible. They also stated that the car would be fully street-legal, allowing the potential owners to enjoy the Arrow on open roads.

Sadly, the project lost steam after its 2016 debut and eventually ground to a halt as Apollo Automobili focused on creating its own separate supercar, the Apollo Intensa Emozione.

Vaporware Supercar Concept #3: Zagato Raptor

The 1996 Zagato Raptor was billed as the car that could help inject some new life into the ailing coachbuilder. The Raptor was designed extensively using computer-aided design equipment, showcasing Zagato’s capabilities in this regard.

It was based on the existing Lamborghini Diablo, but a carbon-fibre bodywork (and lack of ABS and traction control systems) made the Zagato almost 660 pounds lighter. That translated to more speed as the Raptor could hit 60 mph in less than 4 seconds—an impressive number for the ‘90s.

The car appeared at the 1996 Geneva Auto Show, and Zagato was hoping it would generate enough interest to warrant limited production. It was supposed to be built at Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata factory, since the carmaker was interested in the project as a ‘stop-gap’ replacement for the Diablo and its planned successor. But that never happened, and the lone concept was limited to occasional appearances at exclusive car meets until it was put up for auction in November 2019.

Vaporware Supercar Concept #2: Saleen S5S Raptor

This is another Raptor that spun its wheels but got nowhere. The thrilling car featured prominently in games like CSR Racing and Forza Horizon. Sadly, its real-world appearance is limited to a concept displayed by Saleen at the 2008 New York International Auto Show.

The production-spec S5S (named for its 5.0-litre supercharged engine) was to be fitted with a 650-hp V8 that produced all of 630 lb-ft of torque. It was enough to get the supercar to 60 mph in a claimed 3.2 seconds and on to a top speed north of 200 mph.

An expected retail price tag of $185,000 brought it within reach of a bigger segment of the supercar market than the Saleen S7, which cost a whopping $600,000. All of that mattered little at the end, though, as the S5S Raptor has remained a concept for over a decade.

Saleen still exists as a company—so the chances of seeing this in production form someday, while being an extremely long shot, may not exactly be an absolute zero.

Vaporware Supercar Concept #1: Inferno Exotic Car

Mexican carmaker Inferno Automobili set tongues wagging when it announced the Exotic Car (yes, that’s the car’s actual name) in 2015. Billed as Mexico’s first supercar, the Exotic Car will get a twin-turbo V8 capable of 1,400-hp and 670 lb-ft of torque.

In terms of design, this supercar concept is as extreme as it gets, with radical styling and a revolutionary material known as Metal Foam—a zinc-aluminum-silver alloy. According to Inferno Automobili, this material will allow the car to stretch up to a hundred times its original length and bounce right back.

Minor scrapes or accidents will have nothing on this car—that is, if it ever gets produced. There is a dedicated website that includes various technical specifications and contact information, but so far, there’s little sign that the Exotic Car will ever make it to the production stage. A healthy dose of caution is advised if you consider placing a deposit for this one.

De Tomaso Pantera to be reborn? Prototype prowled the streets of Geneva

What a strange year. We’ve already witnessed the return of two Hispano-Suiza automobiles from two Hispano-Suiza companies when nobody would have expected even one of either. Now we get the news that the original De Tomaso Pantera could get two resurrections this year. Italian Coachbuilder Ares Design showed off its Panther, based on a Lamborghini Huracán, last week. During the Geneva Motor Show, the company that owns the De Tomaso brand loosed a camouflaged coupe around the Swiss city, the car’s windshield topped with a banner reading, “DTProjectP.”

That company is Hong Kong’s Consolidated Ideal TeamVenture (CIT), which bought the rights to De Tomaso in 2015 for $1.1 million. One year later, the same firm bought sports car maker Gumpert, quickly turning the Gumpert Apollo gullwing racer into the Apollo brand. At the moment the company seems most occupied with the Apollo Intensa Emotion, the gullwing racer powered by a 6.3-liter V12 good for 780 horsepower. The Pantera makes for a very interesting side gig, assuming anything comes of it.

The Apollo IE tracked Geneva in front of the supposed reborn Pantera, both cars wearing the same camouflage wrap. CIT filed trademark applications for model names Pantera and Mangusta, and a European patent search in 2018 turned up designs for a toothsome Pantera with pop-up headlights.

In Geneva, however, Apollo general manager and CMO Ryan Berry wouldn’t be drawn on what’s in store. Seems like there must be something, though — there’d be no reason to parade around Geneva with a prototype something without cause. And this year marks the 60th anniversary of the De Tomaso brand, as ideal a birthday as any for the return of the cat.

Apollo Intensa Emozione is a 9,000 rpm middle finger to the turbo-hybrid establishment

German supercar builder Apollo has already shown one radical hypercar, the 1,000 horsepower Arrow, at last year’s Geneva auto show. But before that car launches, the company will sell a different hypercar with the name Intensa Emozione, IE for short, which you can probably guess translates to “intense emotion.” The IE is also a very different hypercar from both the Arrow and the establishment. It’s meant to be as raw and pure as a car can be.

One of the emblematic aspects of this idea is the powertrain. In the middle of the IE is a 6.3-liter V12 developed with Autotecnica Motori. Though its 769 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque may sound middle-of-the-road compared with many modern supercars, the IE is unique in that the engine is naturally aspirated and features no electrification whatsoever, so all you experience is a screaming internal-combustion engine. And, man, is it a screamer. It redlines at 9,000 rpm and makes peak power at 8,500 rpm.

One thing that’s a little odd considering the raw experience theme of the car is the inclusion of traction control and optional lower power settings. But the traction control can be switched all the way off.

Apollo Intensa Emozione

Also, although the engine doesn’t make record-setting power, there isn’t much car to move either. The IE uses a carbon fiber chassis and body, and curb weight is a svelte 2,756 pounds, roughly the same as a Toyota 86. The power is also channeled through a sequential six-speed manual for fast shifting. This combination allows the IE to hit 62 mph in a claimed 2.7 seconds on the way to a 208 mph top speed.

Straight-line speed is far from the only thing the IE is capable of, though. F1-style double-wishbone pushrod suspension is found at all four corners with adjustable Bilstein shocks and adjustable anti-roll bars. The various wings and splitters produce nearly 3,000 pounds of downforce at 186 mph. Apollo claims that, with the unspecified Michelin tires developed for the car, the Intensa Emozione is capable of over 2.0-g cornering. It should also stop plenty quickly, too, thanks to 15-inch rotors at each corner gripped by six-piston Brembo calipers up front and four-piston units in the rear.

There are a couple of additional perks to the Intensa Emozione. Buying one will allow the owner to participate in a time attack series hosted by Apollo for the hypercar. It will also give the owner first rights to the upcoming Apollo Arrow. Only 10 people will have access to these perks, since that’s as many IEs Apollo will build. They won’t come cheap either, with a price of €2.3 million, or $2.72 million at current exchange rates.
