Oris’s history of supporting scientific, ecological, societal and conservation-related causes is well documented — in fact, in can be difficult to keep track of all the watches the brand has developed, donated or auctioned off to help improve the world as part of its Change for the Better initiative.
But this particular project hits closer to home: Oris has partnered with Beyond the Dial (a watch website founded by Gear Patrol contributor Allen Farmelo and watch writer and photographer Greg Bedrosian) and the Lake George Park Commission to help document the growth of invasive plant species in Lake George, New York. Though the lake holds a AA rating for freshwater (the highest such rating indicating the cleanest possible water), it is threatened by plants such as the Eurasian Milfoil, which can devastate such a fragile ecosystem.

In order to document the growth of such species, Farmelo and his partner Shelley will scuba dive the lake, inspecting both previously cleaned and uncleaned sites — experts will then use the image to further refine their strategy for combatting the invasive species.
Farmelo and Bedrosian conceived of the project to align with Beyond the Dial’s goal of developing what they call “mission-based journalism,” in which they focus on horological stories that have tie-ins to ecological, societal, historical or other important causes. Oris, which is famously supportive of such causes, was happy to help support the mission. As part of their support, they’ve donated two of their beloved Divers 65 — one 40mm green dial, and one 36mm blue dial. Both of these watches will be worn during Mission Lake George and subsequently auction off once the mission is complete.
