Vinyl records could be getting a quality bump in the near future. Rebeat Innovation, an Austrian-based startup, filed a patent back in 2016 for manufacturing “high definition vinyl,” a process that converts audio digitally to a 3D topographic map, which is then engraved (using lasers) onto a stamper, which then presses the grooves into the vinyl. The result is a record that, compared to conventional LPs, can play better quality audio at higher volumes. The HD records will be more durable and have longer lifespans, too. Basically, HD records are supposed to be better in every way, and the founder and CEO Rebeat Innovation has told Pitchfork that the company has received $4.8 million in funding, and customers could be able to buy these HD records early next year.
