Speed purveyor McLaren confirmed its 911-fighting, sub-650S car will be called the McLaren Sports Series, and that it will be introduced in the second quarter of 2015. Previously we only knew the car as its internal codename: P13.
As we reported in May, the car will use a variation of the carbon-fiber tub chassis used in the P1 and 650S, and is expected to use a less powerful version of the company’s 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Technology sharing will help amortize the costs, according to McLaren.
“You actually make a smaller margin on that car,” said McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt of the Sports Series, “but a larger margin on the 650S because some of the overhead is shared across a greater volume.”
