Welcome to Talking Points, a series that looks at what makes certain products worth talking about, brought to you by Gear Patrol Studios.

Longines has a history of making watches for explorers, from the early pioneers of air, land, and sea to the modern-day adventurer. This year, the watchmaker adds two new models to its aviation-inspired Spirit line: the three-hand Longines Spirit Pilot and the chronograph Longines Spirit Pilot Flyback.

Both timepieces pair the brand’s deep aviation heritage with modern mechanical innovation.

A Century of Aviation Timekeeping Excellence

For more than a century, Longines has been intertwined with the world’s greatest explorers. The brand’s story is deeply woven into the world of aviation, and the watchmaker has produced precision instruments relied upon by pilots.

That legacy of bringing together both elegance and functionality is present in the clean lines and state-of-the-art horological technologies of its two new models. Both of these new watches highlight the brand’s mastery in balancing heritage design with contemporary watchmaking, reaffirming Longines’ position as a leader in the pilot watch category. This isn’t a reissue of a historical design, it’s more of a natural evolution to serve modern wearers while paying tribute to the past.

The Newly Expanded Spirit Collection

The Longines Spirit Pilot offers a three-hand design in a new 39mm stainless steel case that’s more ergonomic and versatile for daily wear. A matte black dial, now simplified by removing the date window and five-star emblem, improves legibility while gold-colored Arabic numerals and hands nod to cockpit instruments of decades past. A screw-down case back improves durability, and an interchangeable strap system makes it easy to swap between bracelet, leather, or rubber options. Inside, the exclusive caliber L888.4 delivers a 72-hour power reserve, COSC-certified accuracy and magnetic resistance far beyond industry standards.

The Longines Spirit Pilot Flyback builds on a milestone from Longines’ history: the invention of the flyback chronograph in the 1930s. This 39.5mm stainless steel chronograph is slim at 13.4mm and offers — for the first time in the Spirit line — a bidirectional rotating bezel with a countdown timer. Its matte black dial, sapphire crystal, and gold-tone Super-LumiNova® numerals ensure cockpit-ready readability. The hand-wound caliber L792.4 powers the flyback chronograph with a column wheel, 68 hours of reserve, and COSC certification, visible through the transparent case back.

How these Timepieces Elevate the Spirit Line

These two additions to the Spirit line capture Longines’ rare ability to respect its own history while delivering products that feel distinctly modern. The three-hand Longines Spirit Pilot is a versatile everyday companion with upgraded ergonomics, simplified design, and technical rigor. The Longines Spirit Pilot Flyback appeals to enthusiasts who want not only a nod to aviation history, but also a sophisticated chronograph movement rooted in Longines’ own innovations. Together, they embody what makes pilot watches so enduring: clarity, reliability, and a sense of adventure that transcends time.
