It’s been relatively quiet on the Pixel 3 rumor front, but today we got a carrot of what Google’s next smartphone will be like. XDA-Developers‘s Mishaal Rahman spotted that the “Pixel 3” was mentioned in Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP) pages, which were probably not meant for public eyes.
The AOSP states: Cherrypick “Add device config to decide which Auto Selection Network UI to use.” This change added the config because the HAL V_1_2 only supports Pixel 3, and the new Auto Selection Network UI is based on HAL V_1_2. So we set the flag to decide which Auto Selection Network UI should be used based in the device type.”
The “HAL” in this instance stands Hardware Abstraction Layer, which in turn refers to the software used with the smartphone’s cellular connectivity. It’s not a lot to go on, but according to Rahman the unique software will enable the Pixel 3 to continuously scan for networks and receive updates more quickly. We don’t know how this will affect the Pixel 3, or the experience using it, exactly. The other little tidbit from this discovery is that we know that Google is internally calling its next smartphone the Pixel 3. I know, game-changing.
The Pixel 3 isn’t expected to be revealed until early October, so expect these little rumors and updates to keep on coming.
