The GTO Engineering Squalo

GTO Engineering has confirmed that Squalo will be the production name for its new car and has revealed the final exterior design updates and a first production-ready look of the new 4.0-liter quad-cam engine.

Squalo, meaning shark in Italian, has been chosen for GTO Engineering’s all-new car due to its shark-like look, instincts, and speed. The team, who were previously using the codename Moderna for its all-new, sub-1,000kg, V12-powered car, has been working behind the scenes on updated surfaces and production-ready engine alongside a completely bespoke wheel and tire package.

Now gaining momentum and pace as it works towards the production-ready car, GTO Engineering and its design team has signed off on the all-important exterior aesthetics including the door handles, wing mirrors, as well as working on a bespoke alloy wheel, which will be available in 18”. The tires, which will be produced by a leading manufacturer in conjunction with GTO Engineering are also in development.

The GTO Engineering Squalo will stick to the same principles since the car was announced: sub-1,000kg, with a manual gearbox, inspired by the Sixties sports cars of old but with modern engineering principles and materials. The Squalo will be powered by a bespoke V12 engine, in keeping with GTO Engineering’s ethos, and both engine and the complete car will be built completely by the firm from the ground up at its UK HQ.

The engine has been announced as a quad-cam V12, but following the last update in February, it has had significant aesthetics and light-weighting engineering upgrades including the surround of the carbs removed to ensure you can see the open trumpets when the bonnet is opened. More news on the engine’s capacity calculated bhp figures, as well as a target weight for the engine, will be revealed next month.

“There’s been an outpour of admiration for what we’re doing here and we realize a little bit of skepticism whether we’re actually making this: a V12-powered, sub-tonne sports car with a Sixties feel but modern reliability, enjoyment, and manufacturing quality. We’re here to hopefully set the record straight to say yes, it’s happening and we’re sticking to our original ethos for the car as well as timing promises for production. We are also delighted to have early adopters and customer orders received already, and we thank them for the trust in our vision and business,” said GTO Engineering Managing Director and Founder Mark Lyon.

“It’s often the small parts of a car that take the longest time. We’re now at a stage where the design models are being created here in the UK and soon we will announce our technical partners working with us on the exterior manufacturing and interiors, as well as wheels and tires. In all my years working in the automotive]industry, I’ve never been as excited about the creativity of manufacturing and design as I am now.”

This update follows the initial renderings and intentions for the new vehicle, which was initially announced in November 2020. Since then, the team continues to grow with in-house and external consultants collaborating together, all working on the same goal to create one of the most exciting enthusiast cars of the decade, with the first customer deliveries in 2023.

2021 Alpine A110 Colour Edition Review

Sports cars built with driving pleasure as their primary purpose are few and far between these days. Yes, there are super cars available in abundance, but sports cars without six-figure price tags are becoming rarer as business cases and the green revolution begin defining the industry. As a result, the world of enthusiasts was taken aback when Renault revived the name of a 70’s rally legend. The Alpine A110 was born again at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show and journalists from across the globe salivated. Why? Well, with an 1,110 kilogram kerb weight, the A110 was the lightweight sports cars we had all been waiting for.

Initial road tests hailed the Alpine as a car that redefined the sector. A couple of years later, I have the chance to see what all the fuss was about. I’ll be honest, the first impressions were not good. The Alpine wears no Renault badges, but when you get in the quality is what you would expect in a £20,000 Clio, not a halo product designed to rival a Porsche Cayman which is built to feel as good as a Panamera or 911. Some of the plastics are sub par, the infotainment screen escaped 2009 and some of the controls, such as the cruise control switch on arm rest, are frankly bizarre. The Recaro seats are brilliant but outclass the rest of the cabin – it really feels like a mix of many different automobiles.

As ever, I spent the first day with this press car doing what I do on my day-to-day routine, trundling around the city getting coffee and running errands. The A110 feels small on the road which is surprising and pleasing in equal measure at a time when a 992 911 occupies almost every millimetre of a European lane. Being the Colour Edition, the A110 I am driving features 4mm lower suspension and 50% stiffer spring and 100% stiffer anti-roll bars then the standard A110 and it did feel a touch too firm at low speeds on poor surfaces. As you may have gauged, I was not understanding what the allure of the little sports cars was. I was more annoyed that there was no cabin storage space (not even door bins), the infotainment was slow, laggy and was not intuitive, that the front boot was as deep as an over baking tray and that the rear boot would barely fit a thick coat let alone any substantial shopping. Being mid-engined, the boot gets very warm adding to the issues. The front truck release is in the passenger footwell and is a struggle to reach from the driving seat, this is borderline comical.

Day two is all about exploiting a cars dynamic capabilities, finally the Alpine A110 came into its comfort zone. Sport Mode engaged, the punchy little 4-cylinder becomes more vocal, the steering weights up and the car feels much more engaging. Hold down the wheel mounted Sport button and track mode is engaged, the entire dash layout changes to display a whole host of information from steering angle to g forces. The ESC is slackened and this is where this 288bhp pocket rocket starts to make sense. Lightness is the overriding sensation, as is feel through that fixed bucket seat. The Getrag DCT even starts to feel well suited to the engine as the shifts are quick and accompanied by giggle educing parps on shifts. With 320Nm to pelt such a light car down the road, the sensation is speed is entertaining.

There is a balance and connection that is encouraging and brings confidence to push harder and harder as the drive becomes all the more rewarding. The steering is quick, there is little feel but enough to understand where grip levels are. With the ESC in track, the rear end comes into play too. Remember the ride I complained about? Well, despite not having adaptive dampers, the ride becomes much more refined as the speeds build. The entire package comes together to result in one of the most satisfying and exiting cars I have driven in a long time with fabulous poise. The feeling of lightness will stay in my memory for a long time to come.

Yes, it may not be practical or cheap (£62,958 as tested) but it offers something no other car on sale today aside from a Lotus Elise can come close to matching. I tip my hat to Renault for being so dedicated in their pursuit of driver engagement. I hope that many people get behind the wheel of the A110 to understand what the engineers in Dieppe have managed to achieve, this car is magnificent.

This Autonomous Electric Car Concept Actively Cleans the Air While It Drives

We’ve seen plenty of electric car concepts designed to push the boundaries of the way we think about what a car can do. This sentiment is especially true when it comes to the autonomous versions…

The post This Autonomous Electric Car Concept Actively Cleans the Air While It Drives first appeared on Cool Material.

Hongqi S9 Hypercar

Hongqi was launched back in 1958, which makes it the oldest automotive manufacturer in China, and at the 2021 Auto Shanghai show they show us a peek into the future, not only with a three-seater limousine with no steering wheel, called the L-Concept, but also the latest evolution of their S9 Hypercar, a car this will go into production as we speak.

The Hongqi S9 prototype was shown at the 2019 IAA in Frankfurt, as the ultimate sports car, designed by Walter de Silva, if that name rings a bell, it should. Walter de Silva was the former Volkswagen Group design chief, and he took over from Luc Donckerwolcke at Lamborghini back in 2005 when de Silva was Head of Design for the Audi brand group, he designed the stunning Miura Concept and the unique Lamborghini Egoista, he is now working for the Silk-FAW joint venture, which helped Hongqi with the development of the S9.

This probably explains why the styling for the S9 looks European from most angles, in fact, the 99 units Hongqi intends to built are rumored to be assembled in Modena, with production to start in 2022, you can now lock in your order for this 1,400hp hypercar with its sleek lines, exposed carbon fiber and butterfly doors.

“The Hongqi S9 brings to life the dreams of those who design and drive it,” says Walter de Silva. “With people who seek exclusivity in mind, my team and I designed this forward-thinking hypercar, linking functionality and aesthetics that looks toward the future.”

There are some interesting styling details to be found on the Hongqi S9, for instance, the headlights combine an air intake to draw cooling air onto the hybrid powerplant, but the most interesting item they mention are the smart electrochromic windows that vary in tint intensity, how cool is that you can make the windows darker so the airconditioning doesn’t have to work so hard to cool the interior … and it looks amazing too.

Power comes from a Hybrid V8 engine that should deliver 1,400 hp (1,044 kilowatts) and propel the car from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 1.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 mph (402 km/h), on pure battery power the Hongqi S9 should be able to travel up to 25 miles (40 km).

Lamborghini in the Rocket League game

I don’t know if you’re familiar with Rocket League? It’s a multi-platform video game that apparently has won more than 150 “Best Game” awards all over the world, it’s a combination of two of the most popular passions ever: sports cars and soccer.

Psyonix is the production company behind the Rocket League game, and they opted to add the new Lamborghini Huracán STO for its unique design inspired by Lamborghini race cars and for its performance figures (top speed 310 km/h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds). The virtual version of the Huracán STO is available for gamers around the world from today through April 27 and will be used to compete in the Battle of the Bulls during the Rocket League Championship Series X Lamborghini Open of which Automobili Lamborghini is the official sponsor.

The purchased package includes the car in Blu Laufey and Arancio California and with different liveries and customization options. The package is completed by the roar of the engine, two sets of tires, and the exclusive “Huracán STO Player Banner” and “Antenna” systems developed by Psyonix.

Stephan Winkelmann, President, and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini commented: “The debut of Huracán STO in the world of Rocket League is a further step in the digital strategy of Lamborghini, which entered eSports in 2020 with its own one-make championship. Gaming and simulation are phenomena of particular interest to the automotive industry, important for engaging the new generations and making our cars even more popular with young people.”

“Battle of the Bulls” will be played in a five-match series from the 23rd to the 25th, and fans can follow the action live on Twitch. The best Rocket League gamers will compete in a series of one-on-one matches, an event format created for Lamborghini, and each winner will receive a prize of US$5,000.

Ferrari 812 Superfast Versione Speciale

Ferrari’s Most Powerful and Highest-Revving V12 Engine. Ever.

In the face of the global pandemic, Ferrari is holding no punches as it continues to roll-out newer, wilder and faster models with aplomb. The latest of these to be (partially) revealed is the Ferrari 812 Superfast Versione Speciale. The “Limited Edition” and “Versione Speciale” monikers currently being associated with this hardcore 812 Superfast variant are said to be unofficial – a complete unveiling of the car will take place on May 5, 2021 via livestream, where all of the final details will be hashed out. For now, we’ll amicably refer to it as the Ferrari 812 Superfast VS.

Now, on to the stuff we already know for sure… and oh boy, is it juicy. The Ferrari 812 Superfast VS will continue to be equipped with a 6.5L naturally-aspirated V12 engine sending power to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. This version however, has been upgraded to produce 819 hp and revs all the way up to 9,500 rpm – up 30 hp and given an extra 500 rpm of vocal range over the standard model, thanks to some valve timing and exhaust flow wizardry. The math says that’s good for 125 hp per liter. And not a single turbo in sight.

Though torque figures are still a mystery, we’re still inclined to suggest that this should make the VS a better all-around performer; allowing it to surpass the standard car’s 0-60 mph time of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 340 km/h, if only by a smidge. The 812 Superfast VS will continue to embrace Ferrari’s most impressive tech, with familiar features such as the Side Slip Control (SSC) traction and stability control system, and rear-axle steering coming standard. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if Ferrari engineers had decided to tweak the electronics to be better optimized with the revisions made elsewhere on the car. Aerodynamics and weight reduction will obviously play a huge role in this as well, so let’s dive into that next.

The visual differences between the 812 Superfast and the VS are immediately obvious, with the latter cutting a much more aggressive figure. One of the most notable changes takes place at the back end of the car, with the rear glass being replaced by a body-colored panel which could be best described as a “super-louver” made from carbon fiber and aluminum. This is one element of the VS’s extreme-downforce mandate, which comes at the loss of some of the regular car’s utilitarian demeanor.

Other displays of the car’s aerodynamic effectiveness are less intrusive, but just as wild. At the front, larger air intakes flank the grill, which is enclosed by a more aggressive bumper with fins at each end appearing to function as integrated canards; a massive front splitter is then added for good measure. Air vents right behind each of the rear wheels and a reimagined carbon fiber diffuser also form part of the organism responsible for optimizing any air flow going under, through or over the VS’s silhouette.

Typical of just about every performance-biased special edition car ever produced by Ferrari, is a strict carbon fiber diet – and this is no different for the upcoming Ferrari 812 Superfast VS. Owners should expect a healthy serving of the carbon fiber good stuff – inside and out – which not only upgrades the car aesthetically, but also allows for the just-as-important art of weight reduction. It’s a given that the VS will weigh less than the standard Superfast’s 1,525 kg, but by how much, we will have to wait and see.

Similarly, there can be absolutely no doubt that the VS will command a “not insignificant” amount more than the regular car’s $340,000 base price. Likewise, the May 5 world premiere will provide more insight and specifics into what is shaping up to be an absolute riot of a car – we will be providing our coverage of the event as soon possible, so stay tuned!

McLaren sells its Woking, England, headquarters for $236 million

McLaren has found a buyer for its headquarters in Woking, England. It sold the facility to a New York-based investment firm named Global Net Lease, but it’s not planning on moving to a new home anytime soon.

Hit hard by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the British firm put a “for sale” sign on its lawn in September 2020 with a major catch: The new owner would need to lease the facility back to McLaren in the foreseeable future. Canadian real estate firm Colliers listed the carmaker’s headquarters at £200 million (around $256 million at the time), and Global Net Lease announced it haggled the price down to £170 million, which represents about $236 million.

The deal includes the McLaren Technology Center, the McLaren Production Center (which manufactures road cars, like the GT), and the McLaren Thought Leadership Center. Parking lots and a small man-made lake are part of the transaction, too. Moving everything to a new location would be immensely expensive, not to mention time-consuming, so McLaren will lease the 840,000-acre site from Global Net Lease for the next 20 years. What happens after that isn’t known yet; McLaren will presumably either sign another multi-year lease or buy the site back.

This is the second time McLaren has received a nine-digit cash injection in less than a year. In June 2020, it arranged a £150 million round of financing from the National Bank of Bahrain. At the time, it said the funding would allow it to get through the coronavirus crisis while putting it in the best possible position to be competitive in the future.

McLaren’s sale of its headquarters isn’t unprecedented in automotive history. In 2012, PSA Peugeot-Citroën (which is now part of Stellantis) sold its historic headquarters on Avenue de la Grande Armée in the heart of Paris for about $327 million to raise much-needed cash; it still leases the building in 2021. And, in January 2004, troubled British carmaker MG Rover sold most of its Longbridge, England, site to a property developer with plans to rent it. It signed a 35-year contract, and it optimistically added a renewal clause, but it shut down in April 2005 after years of losses.

Photos Revealed: Limited Edition Ferrari 812 VS – 1 of 999 Worldwide

Ferrari has finally released photos of the much awaited Ferrari 812 “VS”. VS or Versione Speciale is a pre-production working name, Maranello is yet to reveal the actual name of this hardcore Ferrari 812 Superfast.

The car is powered by the same fully naturally aspirated engine found on the regular 812 Superfast – a 6.5L V12 now tuned to produce 830hp. Performance figures will be revealed on May 5th when Ferrari unveil the actual car live on their social media channels.

Ferrari 812 VS Price

Pricing starts at around €550,000 in Europe, taxes included and around £500,000 in the UK including VAT. Judging by how the F12tdf performed on the second hand market, we expect the 812 “VS” to sell for over €900,000 for the coupe and over €1 million for the Spider. That represents premium/markup of over €500,000, should be more in unique markets like RHD – the UK and Australia for example. After all, this is poised to be the final – and truly – naturally aspirated V12 Ferrari, with successors expected to acquire some form of electrification.

As mentioned, official details on specs and performance will be revealed on May 5th, however, Ferrari has revealed some information on the design. One key area is the removal of the rear glass cover found on the regular 812 SF, it has now been replaced with an aluminum structure.

Ferrari plans to produce only 899 VS coupes and 499 Spiders. That’s a bit higher than the 799 units of the F12tdf – but Ferrari is now a public company and the more money they can make the better it is for investors. Low production numbers will however still be allocated to special convertibles or Icona Series models.

Auto Shanghai 2021 Highlights: Motor Shows are Back!

China has managed to control the COVID-19 situation, and businesses seem to be getting back to normal with few or no lockdowns across the large Asian country. While global Motor Shows around the world were postponed to 2022, China’s own Auto Shanghai has recently opened it’s doors and will run from April 21st to 28th.

There are quite a few surprises presented at the event, with key focus on EVs and the ever growing large number of Chinese car makers. European car makers on the other hand are using the Auto Shanghai 2021 to showcase what their local partners have been up.

Here are the highlights:

Genesis X Concept

The future of Genesis design, spearheaded by the former head of design at Bentley. This is a futuristic GT that hints at design cues of future Genesis cars. It’s likely going to be a full EV if it ever makes it to production.

Audi A6 e-tron Concept

A look into the future full electric Audi A6. According to Audi, it is 95% of what the production car will look like. It’s powered by two electric motors producing a total of 469hp. Expect that number to go up when the RS version is revealed.

Zhiji IM Airo Concept

A concept car built from a collaboration between Alibaba, SAIC, and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech, aimed at urban transport and autonomous driving.

Nio ET7

Nio’s new flagship sedan, full electric and offered in various trims with different ranges. The most powerful version will produce 643hp and 850nm of torque. The range varies from 500km for the standard model to 1000km for the long range model.

Hycan

A joint venture between NIO and GAC formed in 2019 to create electric vehicles. Doesn’t sound like the Taycan at all.

Ford Evos

For the local Chinese market only, the new Ford Evos is built by Ford’s local partner Changan Automobile. It will be sold side to side with the Chinese spec Mach-E. It’s not an EV either, power comes from a 2.0L I4 turbo engine developing 245hp.

Lincoln-Zephyr

Another Chinese specific model made by an American car company. The sedan market in China is still booming, especially sedans with large leg room, that’s why Mercedes introduced a new C-Class LWB in China which looks like a mini S-class especially from inside. The Lincoln-Zephyr will likely be a full EV when it finally hits the market. The original “Zephyr” was made in the late 1930s and classified as a luxury car.

Lexus LF-Z

Lexus first concept to use an all new EV platform. With it, Lexus will launch the future electric vehicles using a series of new technologies. Direct4 is being marketed through the new LF-Z, an intelligent AWD system that switches between AWD, FWD and RWD appropriately. The LF-Z also seeks to revolutionize steer-by-wire technology by applying modern physics of driving.

Hengchi

One of the many upcoming EV car companies in China, Hengchi has a total of 9 models that includes SUVs, MPVs and sedans.

Audi RS e-tron GT

Asian debut for the Audi RS e-tron GT took place at the Auto Shanghai 2021. The car is identical to the Porsche Taycan in terms of technical components. The total output is 647hp and it can do 0-100km/h in just 3.3s.

Chery Antee X

Full EV sub-compact SUV from Chery.

Hongqi L concept

Very interesting concept car from China’s oldest car manufacturer Hongqi. The car has 3 seats, one at the front and two at the rear. There is a chandelier hanging from the roof and there is no steering wheel – a full autonomous vehicle.

Mansory F8XX: Modified Ferrari F8 Tributo Revealed with 880hp

Mansory just revealed their latest creation dubbed the F8XX, a heavily modified Ferrari F8 Tributo with 880hp and 960nm of torque.

According to Mansory, the F8XX has been built, designed and aimed towards performance and lightweight construction.

The F8XX shown here has been painted in Catania Green and also features countless handcrafted details and lightweight body components made of forged carbon, gold colored wheels and finest leather. The exterior body of the F8XX features a front apron, side skirts and a rear apron. The rear wing of the vehicle has been divided into two L shaped angles.

The F8XX retains the same 3.9L V8 twin-turbo found on the F8 Tributo that generates an output of 720 hp and 770 Nm of torque as standard. Mansory successfully managed to modify the engine and the exhaust system to improve the performance of the vehicle and increase the maximum power to 880hp and 960Nm of torque. The corresponding figures for driving performance is increased to a top speed of 354km/h and the acceleration from 0-100km/h is reduced to 2.6 seconds.

Combined CO2 emission is 284 g/km and combined fuel consumption is 13.8 1/100km.

High engine power is transferred into maximum performance in combination with adapted suspension components and the ultra-light forged YT.5 sport wheels used on the vehicle for the first time. The wheels measure 9.5 x 21 and 12 x 22 and have been combined with high-performance tires in dimensions of 255/30 ZR21 (VA) and 335/25 ZR22 (HA).

The interior of the vehicle features a sporty design, the passenger area is completely lined in beige leather with white applications whereas other compartments are adorned in forged carbon.
