Everything Apple Announced at Today’s Big iPhone Event

Apple held its first big hardware event of the fall — titled “California Streaming” — where it gave us a bunch of new gadget announcements, including a new entry-level iPad, a redesigned iPad mini, a new Apple Watch and a bunch of new iPhone 13 models. If you were hoping for news on the latest MacBook Pros or next-generation AirPods, you’ll have to keep on waiting.

Here’s the rundown of what you need to know.

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini

Apple

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have pretty much the same design as the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, but Apple aligned the dual rear-camera system diagonally (instead of right on top of each other) and made the notch a little bit smaller. Apple has given the iPhone 13 its brand-new A15 Bionic chipset to give it a number of gains in performance and efficiency. Both new iPhones have bigger and longer-lasting batteries, as well as a screen that’s 20-percent brighter. The biggest improvement has been with the cameras, as Apple has integrated both iPhone 13 models with a new custom 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor, so they’re able to take better lowlight photos and it enables a new Cinematic mode to shoot far superior video (it detects who is in frame and automatically changes focus). Each new iPhone 13 now has a starting storage capacity of 128GB.

The iPhone 13 mini starts at $699, while the iPhone 13 starts at $799. You’ll be able to preorder both this Friday (September 17) and they’ll be available everywhere on September 24.

They have a vastly improved camera system with a new telephoto lens (with 3x optical), a new ultra-wide lens with a larger sensor, and a wide lens with f.15 aperture. Gear Up With UNDONE’s Dark Knight Retrospective Before ‘The Batman’ Flim Drops

image

Batman fans rejoice! UNDONE is ready to spoil us once more with another timepiece tribute to Gotham’s stealthy superhero. The crime-fighting badass is back and will face a new villain in the upcoming film. But, before the movie drops, we have the Dark Knight Retrospective to look forward to. For this creation, the Hong Kong-based watchmaker goes with an avant-garde aesthetic.

Over the years, we’ve seen several models that pay tribute to both the villains and the Caped Crusader himself. We have several favorites among the bunch and this latest release just made our list. UNDONE says the 1960s Batmobile serves as the inspiration for the design. The donor vehicle was a 1955 Ford Lincoln Futura.

Up Close With The Dark Knight Retrospective

image

Look it up on Google and you’ll understand what the red accents are all about. Instead of going for a fully murdered-out colorway like their previous outings, UNDONE endows it with splashes of crimson. You’ll find these on the aluminum ring around the K1 crystal dome, the rifled band on the crown, and various elements within.

The 316L stainless steel case features a black DLC coat which gives it remarkable resistance against corrosion and the occasional bumps. The Dark Knight Retrospective measures 42 mm x 13.25 mm with a lug-to-lug length of 51 mm. What follows is the dial – crafted to resemble the Detect-A-Scope.

This tool was on the classic Batmobile’s dashboard back when Adam West portrayed Batman in the campy 1960’s TV series. Then there’s another awesome piece of the puzzle here as The Riddler is represented by multiple question marks. The lume lights up in the dark along with the hands, hour markers, minute track, and more.

Get up close and personal so you can view the inner workings of its sophisticated Japanese TMI NH72 mechanical skeleton self-winding movement rated with a 42-hour power reserve. To see more of the caliber in action, let’s flip on to another section of the Dark Knight Retrospective.

UNDONE’s black DLC coating extends all the way here as the exhibition case back reveals an outline of the Batman logo in red. The serialization is printed right under the badge which numbers up to 999 examples only. Finally, UNDONE equips the Dark Knight Retrospective with a black Cordura strap and a pin-buckle closure.

Our thoughts on the Dark Knight Retrospective

image

It’s clear from the overview that we can’t contain our excitement for this timepiece. We love how UNDONE continues to spoil us with regular refreshes based on the beloved franchise. The Dark Knight Retrospective is another must-have item for Batman addicts. Watch collectors, on the other hand, can’t go wrong with this purchase. So snap it up and rock it with your outfit when “The Batman” hits cinemas in early 2022.

France, America and Switzerland Meet in This Watch

Some watch collabs are a mere co-branding exercise or tweaked colors, but the new Semper & Adhuc Immédiate Transatlantique is a rarer breed: It’a a deeper collaboration combining the design DNA and expertise of a French watchmaker, the input of an American watch enthusiast website and a vintage movement that was itself also a collaborative effort. The result is a strikingly original watch with a ton of backstory.

Founded in 2016 by watch industry veteran Colin de Tonnac, Semper & Adhuc creates new watches using restored vintage movements. It’s among a few brands with this approach, but very much offers its own vision, story and look. The new collaboration watch lives in the brand’s Immédiate collection, which is defined by its dial design and a dressy, cushion-like case shape.

Semper & Adhuc began the Immédiate Transatlantique project with “a small selection of Bulova movements in a drawer,” including the company’s Series 5. These are small, manually wound and beautifully decorated movements produced between 1936 and 1975. Though “designed and drafted” in Switzerland, the movements were “completed and assembled” in the United States. The brand then worked with founder of the website Beyond the Dial — and Gear Patrol’s own freelancer extraordinaire Allen Farmello — to develop the concept as well as to get Bulova’s blessing to use the movements. You can see where the Transatlantique name comes from — a red, white and blue theme for the dial equally represents French and American national colors.

The Bulova Series 5 movements are partially visible through a caseback “eyecup.”

watch
Even Semper & Adhuc’s packaging is made in France.

Like other watches in the Immédiate collection, the Transatlantique has a 37mm steel case that’s water resistant to 30m, and, notably, customers can specify a right- or lefthand orientation for the crown. The Bulova Series 5 movements have a 35-hour power reserve and are partially visible through a case back “eyecup.” Aside from the movements, every part of the brand’s watches is sourced from suppliers in France.

Watches like this feel special for a number of reasons, but even more so because they’re naturally limited — not only by the work required of making them to order but also by the number of movements available: specifically, 20. That means that if you want one of the 20 examples you’ll have to act quickly when they become available for pre-order today, September 14, 2021, at 2pm EST for around $2,465. If you don’t get a chance to grab one of these but like Semper & Adhuc’s approach, it’s well worth checking out their other watches or waiting for the next collab watch.

Sonos’s New Soundbar Does Dolby Atmos For About As Cheap As It Gets

Sonos has announced the Beam (Gen 2), the second-generation of its Beam soundbar that was originally released in June 2018. The new compact soundbar looks basically identical its predecessor (save for an updated grille), but Sonos gave it a 40-percent faster CPU, an eARC connection and, most importantly, support for Dolby Atmos.

The Beam (Gen 2) costs $449— $50 more than the Beam (Gen 1) — making it one of the few Dolby Atmos soundbars you can buy for less than $500. Sonos just increased the price of the Arc by $100, so it now costs $899, meaning the Beam (Gen 2) is now exactly half as expensive.

The Beam (Gen 2) is available for preorder now, in either white or black, with general availability starting on October 5.

Sonos didn’t rewrite the script with the Beam (Gen 2). It has the same exact dimensions as the Beam (Gen 1). It has the same exact speaker configuration (consisting of four full-range drivers, a center tweeter and three passive radiators). And it has same microphone array and voice assistant compatibility (you can choose between Alexa or Google Assistant). The difference is that the Beam (Gen 2)’s new processing power allows it to unlock some key sound enhancements.

“What’s unique about Sonos speakers compared to traditional soundbars is speaker arrays,” said Scott Fink, a product manager for home theater at Sonos. “And that’s basically the software that’s coordinating the interactions and playback of the speakers so that they can work together and direct sound around the room.” Where the Beam (Gen 1) was able to create three speaker arrays, the more sophisticated software of Beam (Gen 2) allows it to create five speakers arrays.

tech roundup

Courtesy

The two extra speaker arrays helps the Beam (Gen 2) better separate height and surround information and thus deliver a more immersive sound. When comparing the Beam (Gen 2) to the Beam (Gen 1), Fink says you’ll notice a more detailed soundstage with Beam (Gen 2), as well as hear dialogue more clearly. Also, these sound improvements that the Beam (Gen 2) delivers apply across the board, whether you’re listening to Dolby Atmos content or not.

Unlike the Sonos Arc, the Beam (Gen 2) still doesn’t have dedicated upward firing drivers. The means that it likely won’t be able to deliver the same level of immersive sound as higher-end soundbars that do have them. This is why for the best possible Dolby Atmos experience within the Sonos ecosystem, Fink still recommends the Arc. The Beam is still designed for small rooms and budget shoppers.

The Beam (Gen 2) has a few other upgrades. It has a newer HDMI eARC connection instead of the original Beam’s ARC, which allows it to support high-definition audio codecs, such as Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and multi-channel LPCM (which is important for gamers). It also has a perforated polycarbonate grille — just like Sonos Arc — which is supposedly easier to clean than the fabric grille of the original Beam. And it supports NFC (just like many of Sonos’s newer speakers), so you can more quickly set up the Beam (Gen 2) with your smartphone.

As for the original Beam, Sonos is stopping production and phasing it out. It will, however, continue to support it for software updates for “years to come.”

Stop Using Your Laptop Or Desktop’s Webcam And Upgrade To 4K With The Opal C1

As much as we want things to go back to normal as soon as possible, the pandemic rages on. Although some restrictions have been lifted, our daily commute still exposes us to possible transmissions. Therefore, working from home is not going away anytime soon. To help you get a leg up during video conferences, here’s Opal’s C1.

Let’s face it, laptops and desktop computers still lag behind smartphones or tablets when it comes to camera resolution. This is probably why most people prefer to use these instead of their workstations at home. With the C1, Opal levels the playing field with 4K-resolution support.

This feature is rarely found even on high-end notebooks, let alone leading computer peripheral brands. Except for the iPad Pro and latest iPhones, Apple only equips its MacBooks with 720p front-facing cameras. Why settle for mediocre when you can enjoy top-notch image quality with a sleek and compact webcam?

The C1 measures 1.97” x 3.07” x 1.81” (H x W x D) with the mount and 1.49” x 3.07” x 0.94” without it. It packs a ƒ1.8, six-element, glass-lens which outperforms other webcams when it comes to low-light visibility. Opal equips it with a 7.8-mm 4K Sony sensor to blow the competition out of the water.

Not only does it deliver crisp and vibrant images, but the MicMesh technology also captures great audio too. Opal uses an array of beamforming microphones and intelligent noise cancelation for crystal clear communication. The C1 also boasts premium craftsmanship with aerospace-grade aluminum in a classy matte finish.

CASBIA Releases The FENOMENO XXX2 Sneakers With 3M’s Reflective Technology

Most sneakerheads we know might be what you call a fickle bunch who religiously follow every major drop. In essence, this is the very definition of what it’s like to be one. The thing is, a laser focus on only the leading brands and collaborations can make you miss out on some cool releases. Just like the FENOMENO XXX2 from CASBIA.

This Italian label may not be a mainstay among collectors, but their lineup of footwear has a lot to offer. When you’re after avant-garde design and remarkable comfort, CASBIA might meet your discerning tastes. The FENOMENO XXX2 is a sporty silhouette that may seem like a high-top but it’s actually a mid-top once you wear it.

According to the manufacturer, the namesake is Italian for “a phenomenal person” and we like that. It might not level up your game on the court, but it looks on point for casual wear. At first, we were thinking there were two colorways shipping. However, there’s another reason for the chromatic shift in the images.

The upper of the FENOMENO XXX2 uses a reflective gray nylon puffer underneath the calfskin leather overlays. The material peeks out in key sections such as the vamp and collar. When the light hits the sneakers just right, it shines a bright white.

CASBIA badging can be found on the tongue, on the lateral side close to the toe, midsole, and hot sealed on the heel loop. Additional contrast comes from the black leather elements on the FENOMENO XXX2. Finally, a 3M reflective outsole suggests you can use these for your runs.

BMW Teases A New E-Bike Concept Called The I Vision AMBY

We have been featuring e-bikes for quite some time now and admit that most look pretty average. There are those that push for a fully futuristic look and the rest which attempt a more classic outline. Not many can pull off a middle ground design except maybe for BMW with its i Vision AMBY Concept.

Debuting alongside the fully motorized Motorrad Vision AMBY at the IAA Mobility 2021 expo, it’s a tempting platform for urban transport. No doubt, eco-minded folks will snap it up in a heartbeat if it ever hits the market. This angular pedal electric bicycle packs smart features to keep the rider safe.

Unlike the Motorrad Vision AMBY, which is fully electric, the i Vision AMBY will require some legwork. This is perfect for cyclists who still want to get their workout and occasionally let the batteries take over. According to BMW, the 2,000 Wh battery pack is good for up to 186 miles.

This sporty e-bike features a lightweight and durable aluminum frame with a suspension system for a smooth ride. The 27.5-inch wheels are armed with brake systems that use rapeseed oil for the fluid. Meanwhile, owners can mount their smartphone and use it as a digital key and sync with the BMW companion app.

Moreover, the handset is also essential to load license information and location. This also allows the e-bike to use its geofencing technology. The e-bike will electronically limit the top speed depending on your license and the speed limits imposed on certain areas.

The three speed ratings are 15.5 mph on cycle tracks, up to 28 mph on urban roads, and up to 37 mph when you’re on multi-lane roads. The BMW i Vision AMBY uses strips of LEDs mounted on the handlebars and seat post for improved visibility at night.

The 2022 Subaru BRZ Refines the Breed

Better than the original, but not too different. The new engine may not seem to have that much more power on paper — 23 more horses and 28 more lb-ft — but those amount to jumps of 11 and 18 percent, respectively, which is enough to provide a noticeable increase in pep. More importantly, the torque comes on earlier and more smoothly, making driving around town a dash easier.

As before, it’s stunningly well-balanced and fun to drive. I could dive into all sorts of nerdy talk about MacPherson front suspensions, coil springs, strut tower braces, stabilizer bars and anti-dive / anti-lift geometry, but none of that likely matters to you; bottom line, the BRZ is one of those handful of cars that can be pushed close to their limits at everyday speeds, and is a delight to drive at any velocity. It’s extremely well-balanced, easy to place and easy to play with.

Like before, buyers can choose between two six-speed transmissions: one manual, one torque-converter automatic. The automatic certainly doesn’t suck, mind you; it has paddle shifters that shift quickly when you want to use them, and it gets better fuel economy on the highway, which could be an appeal to some. But a taller final-drive ratio and taller gearing means it’s not quite as quick, and in a car with this sort of power, every bit counts.

No, the stick shift is the way to go for this sort of car. The clutch is feathery — don’t try test-driving this in your Red Wings — and the shift lever’s action perhaps not as oily-sweet as the best gearboxes, but there’s no denying that the manual makes the car far more involving and entertaining. Short-shift for fuel economy, wring it out on back roads, it’s all up to you and you alone.
