Vacheron Constantin Calls For Adventure With The New Overseas Everest Collection

While most high-end timepieces are tough enough to withstand the occasional impact or accidental drops, owners prefer to wear them for more casual activities. There are others that prefer to push beyond the standards many consider when it comes to durability. Vacheron Constantin is doing just that with the latest Overseas collection.

The new lineup is called the “Everest” and consists of two variations: Chronograph and Dual Time. Even though both have a lot in common when it comes to aesthetics, their functionalities and more set them apart. As for which model to get, it entirely depends on your preferences. If it were up to us, one of each should do nicely.

Overseas Dual Time Everest

First up on our list for the Overseas collection is the Dual Time Everest. It features a 41-mm x 12.8-mm case that houses a matte grayish-blue dial. The outermost minute track ring is in the same shade, while the applied hour markers are a mix of sticks and batons.

You can tell the time back home via the orange hand and day/night indicator at 9 o’clock. Then there’s the date sub-dial at 6 o’clock. Powering the watch is Vacheron Constantin’s 5110 DT/2 self-winding movement with a 60-hour power reserve.

Overseas Chronograph Everest

When you want different timekeeping functions and a bigger silhouette, this is it. The case measures 42.5 mm x 13.7 mm with a similar outline as the other. The dial is still a matte grayish-blue affair but sports a mix of baton, stick, and square hour markers.

You can find a date window right in the middle of 4 and 5 o’clock with three chronograph sub-dials. A total of three hands are in orange to give it much some needed contrast. Inside, Vacheron Constantin equips it with the 5200/2 automatic caliber good for 52 hours on a full wind.

Vacheron Constantin Premium Craftsmanship

The most recent Overseas collection might not look like luxury watches at a glance, but the spec sheets say otherwise. It uses titanium and stainless steel for the case, while the dial boasts 18K gold elements. Moreover, the transparent sapphire crystal of its caseback shows the 22K pink gold oscillating weight.

The intricate designs vary between the two Everest models. Depending on your mood or outfit, swap between the gray rubber or blue Cordura fabric straps. Vacheron Constantin will be offering 150 examples of each adventure-ready Overseas Everest variant.

How Zalto Became the World’s Most Coveted Wine Glass

That Zalto glassware is structurally sound seems a minor miracle. The featherlight bowl, so fine it dissolves into its surroundings, is held up by a stem not much wider than a lollipop stick. But there’s much more to aZalto than appearances. Leading sommeliers claim that it enhances the nose and flavor of a wine in a manner unlike any other glassware in the world, a feature that has solidified it as the uncontested favorite among top-tier restaurants.

While Zalto wine glasses have only been in production for little more than a decade, the artistry that laid the foundation for the glassware dates back to the 1400s. For six generations, the Zalto family has worked as the leading artisanal glassmakers in Lower Austria’s Neunagelberg, a major wine region. In 2003, Kurt Zalto approached Father Hans Denk, a local priest with a renowned palate for wine, to collaborate on a stemware collection. What resulted was a series of precision-engineered wine glasses, applying Father Denk’s comprehension of wines to Zalto’s glassmaking capabilities and marrying pure form with superlative function.

“Everything about the production of a Zalto glass has been pushed to the extreme.”

Zalto distributed primarily to local winemakers at the outset. In 2005, while touring Austrian vineyards, wine importer Stephan Schindler, of California’s Winemonger Imports, learned of Zalto glassware, which was still fairly new at the time. Stephan and his wife, Emily, worked with the company (and Father Hans Denk) to bring it to the U.S. for the first time.

Zalto-Gear-Patrol-Ambiance

The duo seeded the glassware on wine forums and message boards, offering a free set to anyone willing to cover the cost of shipping. By 2010, business began to accelerate. High-end restaurants began purchasing sets to use for VIP clientele, and by 2012, San Francisco’s Saison purchased the complete Zalto line for use throughout the restaurant.

On the East Coast, the glasses began landing on the tables of select restaurants in 2013. New York’s Charlie Bird was among the first to adopt Zalto as its exclusive wine glass. “Everyone who picks up that glass for the first time has some reaction to it,” says Grant Reynolds, wine director of Charlie Bird and its sequel restaurant, Pasquale Jones. “For us, design is really important. [We shy from the ornate or gaudy], and Zalto is really clean and beautiful and simple,” he says, adding that the glasses are “highly effective” in intensifying the underlying flavors of a wine.

The finely honed craftsmanship behind a Zalto is near impossible to ignore — and it goes a long way toward fostering conditions conducive to best tasting a wine. Whereas machine-made glasses have a rounded lip, Zalto’s glasses are polished down to be flat, essentially dissolving the barrier between mouth and wine and improving delivery to the tippler’s palate. “[The glasses] disappear into the background and let you taste the wine unadulterated by the heft or body of the vessel,” says Zalto brand ambassador and award-winning sommelier Aldo Sohm. He says that his first time sipping from the glassware was revelatory. “It was like having previously unheard-of clarity about a wine. I didn’t want to drink out of anything else.”

Zalto-Gear-Patrol-Ambiance-2

Some of the molds and tools that Zalto uses to hand craft each glass. (Photo: Zalto)

“Everything about the production of a Zalto glass has been pushed to the extreme,” says Winemonger Imports’ Emily Schindler of the handblown stemware. “From the finishing of the rim to how thin and light the glasses are, and even where the glass — which is one piece from the rim to the bottom of the stem — connects to the base. [The artisans] take an extra step to clean away as much excess material at that juncture, which results in a glass that balances perfectly in your hand.”

But for all its acclaim, a Zalto doesn’t inherently make a wine taste better. It merely magnifies a wine’s character. So while the stemware can deliver “the finest possible expression of a wine,” Schindler says, “it can just as easily show a wine’s faults.” Zalto’s product, then, is more than a mere vehicle for consumption. It’s a precision instrument — one that remains highly coveted for its aesthetics and effect on wine, equally and alike.

Beat the Hangover With the ZBiotics Probiotic Drink

Nobody likes the hangover or the groggy feeling after a night or so of hard alcohol drinking. Practice, science, and tradition can dictate how you can combat these aftereffects. But what you really need is to calm the acetaldehyde, the toxic byproduct of alcohol. You can do so with a special probiotic drink called the ZBiotics.

After three years of scientific research, you get the first product in the world that can successfully break down acetaldehyde. It is a genetically engineered probiotic that helps you feel and do your best after drinking beer, wine, whiskey, and other alcoholic drinks. It works best taken before consuming any alcohol to prepare your gut from producing the same enzymes that break down acetaldehyde. Simply put, this drink replicates your liver’s natural process where it matters most: your gut.

Fair warning though, the ZBiotics Probiotics is not a miracle drink that gets rid of or reduces intoxication. You should still be a responsible drinker and consume only want you can. The tendency is, you will still feel the hangover if you have too much to drink. Take it from the Spice Girls who said that “too much of something is bad enough.” if

It is still advisable to drink lots of H20 as alcohol can dehydrate you. Then, of course, get plenty of sleep and fill up your stomach before and after drinking. These help you replenish those good bacteria in the gut that were otherwise lost to the alcohol.

The ZBiotics Probiotics comes in 3, 6, and 12 packs in a special box perfect for on-the-go carry so you’re prep for a night of drinking with friends or colleagues.

The Grovemade Task Knife Makes Great Desktop Additions

You don’t really need a pocket knife or a folder for small or quick-cutting tasks. When opening boxes or packages, you can simply reach for the cutter just like those durable ones from the Grovemade Task Knife collection.

Its blade is not as sharp as those found on pocketknives. But it does a great job at light-duty tasks. As such, it is an ideal desktop addition so you can easily reach for it when you need to open a letter, packages, or cut pieces of paper.

The blade does not need sharpening. But if there’s a call for it, then it works with any pocket knife sharpener out there. The Grovemade Task Knife even comes with attractive aesthetics that would spice up any work table. It boasts a geometric design that’s both elegant and practical in its appeal. It is machined from solid stainless steel and finished off with a black ceramic coating to make it durable and practically indestructible. It feels hefty at 2.7 ounces yet it sits comfortably in the hands for a secure grip.

This can also be a practical everyday carry and with its compact size, it can easily slip in your pockets. Its blade is merely 1.44 inches and is at an overall size of 4.75 x 0.65 x 0.25 inches. Plus, the design makes it so it can sit on the desk either sideways or laid flat.

Manufactured entirely in the Portland area, the Grovemade Task Knife comes in three colorways. Aside from the black finish, it also comes in polished raw steel and brass.

Rapha + POC Collection: Stylish Design With Robust And Reliable Protection

Every seasoned cyclist knows that personal safety always comes first. You can be the most careful individual out there, but accidents can happen even on bicycle-only lanes. As professionals put it, never neglect the quality and performance of your cycling gear. If you’re shopping for a new helmet, check out the new Rapha + POC collection.

The British cycling lifestyle brand is collaborating with the renowned Swedish protective gear manufacturer for this limited-edition release. There are two models receiving the revamp and upgrades: Ventral Air and Omne Air. Let’s start off with the more exclusive option among the two, which is the latter.

As indicated by the Rapha + POC Ventral Air product page, the helmet can only be purchased by Rapha Cycling Club members. On the other hand, a disclaimer hints that this exclusivity could be early access before the general launch. Most of the matte sections are in a shade of dark navy with the glossy segment in pink.

The Omne Air, on the other hand, is available for all cyclists who demand robust protection. You can also grab it in Navy, Off-White, and Carbon Gray. Unlike Ventral Air, which is for performance road racing and long-distance rides, this is a great all-rounder.

Although each model under the Rapha + POC collection boasts unique features, both share some of the technology that makes them reliable. There’s the EPS liner, ventilation ports, eye-garage for eyewear storage, and more. Get the perfect fit each time you wear the helmets with the intuitive dial system. Once the straps are in, fine-tune with a twist and ride in confidence.

Hitting the Links Soon? You Need Some Fresh Golf Clothes

mr p golf

Mr Porter

As one of the few inherently socially distant activities, golf has seen a bit of a boom during the pandemic. Starting in June 2020, courses across the country saw a huge surge in rounds played. According to the National Golf Foundation, golf courses across the country saw a 22.8 percent increase in rounds played through the first six months of 2021 when compared to 2020. That is a lot of golf.

When it comes to hitting the links, it is almost just as fun to dress for the occasion as it is to actually play 18 holes. Golf clothes have traditionally been defined by the ill-fitting polos and baggy pleated khakis of the 80s and 90s, but the past decade or so has seen a recommitment to the sartorial side of the game. (Rickie Fowler’s head-to-toe orange outfit notwithstanding.) While we haven’t returned to the knee-high knickers of the early 20th century, we are seeing brands choose to work with a combination of traditional and technical, leaving you with a bunch of excellent options to choose from. With that in mind, we decided to round up some pieces from our favorite brands. Next time you head to the course, whether it’s your local muni or the country club, do it with style.

Soft and Sturdy Flannel Shirts for Fall

style

Courtesy

You can’t spell flannel without fall and now is prime time for the classic shirt to come out of the woodwork and into the crisp air. Like beanies and duck boots, it’s a style staple of the season. You’d do well to have a few tasty tartans in your closet. But not all plaid shirts are flannel shirts. The term has been used interchangeably to refer to plaid at large, though flannel is a specific type of fabric independent of the pattern overlayed on top of it. It’s believed that flannel stems from Welsh origins and was originally a type of woven fabric made from carded wool or worsted wool.

Today, flannel is most familiar as a brushed fabric rendered in cotton, but can be made with wool as well as man-made materials like polyester and acrylic. The brushed quality is what gives flannel fabric its softness and warmth, making it a common fabric for chillier months. It’s seen in blankets, pajamas and especially shirts, often in some type of plaid, though it can be made in solid colors.

Good flannel shirts are thicker than the usual oxford or broadcloth button-up and get better with age. They’re meaty enough to pair with a thermal shirt but soft enough to wear on their own. They’re also more versatile than a typical button-up and can do double duty as an overshirt or a shirt-shirt. Whatever your flannel reasoning is, if you’re looking for a reliable one to keep you through fall, winter and beyond, these are the best you can get.

Best Overall Flannel Shirt

Board Shirt

Pendleton’s Board Shirt has been favored by the Beach Boys and hailed as one of the best flannel shirts on the market for over for decades. It’s remained unchanged since the ’60s, with its two-pocket design, square hem and loop collar styling. The fabric uses virgin wool milled and woven in Pendleton’s famed Oregon-based mill. It’s water-, odor-, and stain-resistant and machine-washable so you don’t have to be precious on laundry day. If you’re not keen on the camp collar design, you can opt for the Lodge Shirt which sports a single pocket and classic button-up placket.

Best Upgrade Flannel Shirt

Waffle Flannel

Made in India from 100-percent cotton yard-dye waffle madras, Corridor’s Flannel is soft but much heavier. It’s nearly a shacket (shirt-jacket), if you will. Plus, it’s hue, dubbed Thrush, encapsulates the changing season quite well.

Best Affordable Flannel Shirt

Brushed Flannel Long-Sleeve Shirt

This is an affordable brushed flannel from Madewell, crafted from cotton certified by the brand’s Do Well arm, which certifies raw materials with non-profit farming org Better Cotton.

The Brushed Flannel Shirt

Sure, Everlane’s The Brushed Flannel Shirt is missing the prerequisite of patterning, but everything else is here: the material, which brings softness and sturdiness, and the shape.

Sly Straight Hem Flannel

John Elliott

Love the feeling of flannel but hate the shape of a traditional shirt? Meet John Elliott’s Sly Straight Hem Flannel, which meets wearers in the middle. It has a streetwear-influenced straight bottom, a less bold, more beachy print, and a natural pilled, kind of heathered texture.

The Yosemite Buffalo Check Shirt

Taylor Stitch

The Yosemite Buffalo Check Shirt from Taylor Stitch combines heavyweight chamois shirting, “unbreakable” Japanese urea buttons, and two front flap pockets, of which one has a tiny pencil slot.

Whiting Shirt

Wax London

Big, big yarns are what gives Wax London’s standout flannels their charm. It’s as if you nicked your granddad’s old flannel and took a magnifying glass to the yarns. Each one is made in Portugal using archival flannel fabrics that are as bold as they are heavy.

Transitional Flannel

Outerknown

Outerknown’s Transitional Flannel uses a grip of plaids in and a few solid colorways, each with eco-friendly heavy organic cotton. They’re sturdy but as soft and come with a natural corozo nut buttons, one chest pocket and a classic fit.

Hill Shirt

Portugese Flannel

Is it any surprise that a brand that’s been crafting flannel shirts through multiple generations is a great option? I mean, the brand has flannel in the name. Portuguese Flannel makes a ton of variations its bread-and-butter shirts every season, each made by highly-skilled craftspeople using exclusive fabrics made in-house.

Buffalo Check Work Shirt

Iron Heart

If you’re the kind to go big or stay your ass at home, Iron Heart’s line of behemoth flannels are for you. They’re made using a rare cotton found in the Andes mountains which sounds fancy as hell — because it is. Known as aspero cotton, this type of cotton grows on trees and cannot be farmed or mass produced, making it one of the most natural cottons in the world. It’s harvested for its unparalleled fineness and softness and Iron Heart uses enough of it to make a flannel fabric that’s literally twice as heavy as other flannels on this list. That fabric is then brushed once on the outside for warmth and then double brushed on the inside because it’s all about you. They’re made in Japan with double-needle construction, dual pockets and a price tag that’s also about double the cost of some of the pricier options on this list.

Plaid Wool Overshirt

American Trench

Made by the New England Shirt Co. for American Trench using deadstock, 100-percent virgin wool woven by Woolrich Woolen Mills (in Woolrich, PA), these are super-nice shirts at an incredible, steal of a price. They’re fitted but still leave rooming for layering.

Flannel Button-Down Shirt

Todd Snyder

Yes, Todd Snyder makes flannel, and, yes, of course, they’re good. Each one has a super-soft hand feel, a fitted, tailored body, and a rich yet unique pattern.

Traditional Flannel Shirt

L.L. Bean’s men’s catalog boasts several different iterations of the Traditional Flannel Shirt: some with flap pockets, some with unstructured collars, some with liners. This is the most basic one of the bunch, but done really well. (And it’s only $50.)

Brushed Wool Flannel Button-Down Shirt

Reese Cooper

I consider Reese Cooper a streetwear designer. But, he makes clothing with a “classic American brand” level of quality in mind. He’s also clearly referencing products from a few of them. See: this hefty flannel. His isn’t ground-breaking, but it is both beautifully done and done here in the US.

Farrell Checked Worksheet

Here’s one of those timeless American brands I was talking about: RRL, the real luxury limb (get it, arm?) of Ralph Lauren. The soft cotton hand feel matched with this countryside-looking color = an A+ flannel.

Keap Athletics Puts Other Pocket Shorts To Shame

When it’s hot out we easily reach for those comfortable pair of shorts during walks in the urban jungle. We also usually opt to wear them when working out or when in any physical activity or sports. But often we encounter storage problems especially if the pockets are either very shallow or too tight to reach in. We struggle to get items out or worry about losing them. Keap Athletics provides a solution to these common problems with practically designed pockets that ensure you keep your essentials with you no matter your movements.

Reach for The Active Short when you hit the gym, the track, the field, or the court. This is for activewear, as such, it is designed to move with you. It uses a four-way stretch material and features an athletic waistband. Yet it boasts a modern cut for an elegant look. Storage-wise, it gives you a zipped back pocket and a couple of front pockets that securely hold your phone, wallet, and other EDC.

However, for all-around versatile wear, you can find comfort in the Keap Athletics The Original Short. It combines functionality and comfort you can even sleep with it on. It boasts a classic cut with redesigned front opening pockets, that just like The Active Short, guarantees you don’t lose items stashed inside.

What makes both The Active and The Original Short stand out from any of its kind are the horizontally-cut deep pockets. They keep items safe and secure as they sit naturally away from the opening to prevent them from slipping as you sit or move around. Truly, Keap Athletics puts pockets to good use and not merely for aesthetics appeal.

Want an iPhone 13? Check Out These Pre-Order Promo Deals

Apple

Looking for even more great savings? Head over to Today’s Best Deals page to see all our top deals from today.

Last week Apple announced the new iPhone 13, which is set for an official release on September 24. Pre-orders have been open for a few days now and, based on some of the stellar pre-order deals we’ve seen, it appears that Apple is eager to move as many 13s and 13 Pros as possible — and quickly, at that.

Apple, along with some of the biggest mobile carriers (including Verizon and T-Mobile), are offering huge savings and the ability to walk away with an Apple iPhone 13 for $0 down. The only catch is that you’ll need an eligible trade-in. There are deals available for each of the new iPhones, including the 13, the 13 mini, the 13 Pro and the 13 Pro Max. If you’re a new-iPhone-ever-year type person, or have an older model and have been eager for an upgrade, now is the time to shop.

While a new iPhone sounds like a great idea, one question you should always ask yourself is whether a new iPhone is worth it? The promos are some of the most generous they’ve been since the old days of free upgrades. While that could be an indication of minor upgrades — the main upgrades with the newest iPhones are the camera, a brighter screen, an improved battery and huge storage in the 1TB 13 Pro — we think it’s more that people are holding onto their phones longer so Apple and the mobile carriers need to incentivize the new releases. If you are interested or if you’ve held off upgrading for a while it definitely could be the cheapest time to make the move.

Nissan May Have Just Confirmed That a New GT-R Is Happening

The Nissan GT-R, also known as Godzilla, is the Japanese brand’s halo sports car. The current generation was a revelation when it came out. The trouble is it came out back in 2007, the same year Steve Jobs debuted the first iPhone. And while the GT-R once offered supercar performance for a modest price, it now starts off more expensive than a Porsche 911.

Nissan has not announced a next-generation GT-R yet. And its future is open to speculation as Nissan has faced financial problems. They only sell about 300 GT-Rs per year in the U.S. But, as spotted by Motor1, Nissan’s Australian media site may have inadvertently confirmed that a next-generation GT-R is in the works.

Australia is losing the R35 GT-R in November as it no longer meets the country’s crash regulations. A Nissan Australia press release notes that it will be “the last time the current-generation vehicle will be offered” and that “this isn’t the end to the GT-R story in Australia.” If it isn’t the last time the GT-R will be offered, but it’s the last time the current-generation GT-R will be offered, one must rationally conclude there will be a next-gen R36 GT-R.

When the next-generation GT-R would arrive is one issue. A report last year pegged it for 2023. It’s not clear right now where the new GT-R would place on a spectrum between intention and full-on production car. As with the new Z car, expect Nissan to introduce a GT-R concept — of the non-wearable variety — before the production car.

Like the new Z car, another question will be how new an R36 GTR would actually be. However, the same report that pegged the new GT-R for 2023 has it featuring a revolutionary hybrid setup with an F1-like kinetic energy recovery system, which would have a fittingly Godzilla-like impact.

Your Next Beater Watch Should Be a Solar-Powered, Affordable Timex

Field watches aren’t strictly defined, but they’re often smallish, practical, affordable, military in style, with only basic features, and they’re made to live outside. Sure, Timex offers such cheap and cheerful watches with quartz or mechanical movements in severa; collections, but what could be more carefree and pragmatic than one that’s solar-powered? The new Timex Expedition North Solar collection delivers just that, and at these prices, you just might want to grab a few.

As a watch made for the outdoors — as the entire Expedition collection is — a solar-powered field watch should feel right at home actually being used as it was intended. Getting outside will help keep its battery charged, and a quartz movement means it’s going to be accurate and robust. Go ahead and take it camping: you don’t need to worry about the likes of rain or even jumping in a lake given its 100m of water resistance — and it’s affordable enough you don’t even have to worry about banging it around, though it should be able to handle a bit of that as well.

The Timex Expedition North’s matte case finishing offers the toolish look you should expect of a field watch.

Further promising its durability is a sapphire crystal (which you don’t necessarily expect on watches at this price) and a steel case with a fitting matte finish. Available in a few color coatings as well as bare steel, the Expedition North Solar watches also come in two sizes: 41mm or 36mm. Unless you’ve got large wrists or generally like large watches, the smaller diameter is going to offer the more classic field watch experience.

Depending on the variation, the watches come matched to either fabric straps made from recycled materials or leather straps made with eco-friendly methods that conserve water use in the tanning process. Regardless of the strap, version or size, all have the same price of $159 and are available directly from Timex.

REC Watches RNR Arkonik: Automotive-Inspired Watchmaking At Its Finest

image

Land Rover is an iconic British marque that supplies the automotive industry with rugged and expedition-ready vehicles. Among its lineup of tough rides, the Defender has amassed a cult following for years now. The model’s immense popularity makes it a perfect platform for aftermarket customizations. As such, REC Watches pays tribute to a mechanical masterpiece with an exclusive timepiece – the RNR Arkonik.

Given the difficulty of finding a classic that’s in pristine condition, most people turn to restomods. For its latest project, the Copenhagen, Denmark-based watchmaker draws more than just inspiration from a 1984 Arkonik Land Rover Defender 110 UJO. Before we dive in let’s give you a brief overview of the SUV that led to this awesome collaboration.

How The UJO Came To Be

image

As REC Watches tells it, the story began when Arkonik founder Andy Hayes arrived home from the hospital in 2006. Coming from a two-month recovery period after a motorcycle accident, his wife surprised him with a “Stratos Blue” 1984 Land Rover Defender 110. It was supposedly something he could work on as a hobby.

The “UJO” moniker apparently came from the last three randomized letters of the Defender 110’s plate number – “B379 UJO.” After a comprehensive restoration, Hayes took the SUV on a tour across Europe. By the end of his travels, the experience sparked the creation of the Arkonik brand. Now, you can own a piece of the legendary machine that started it all with the RNR Arkonik.

A Sophisticated Homage To A Stunning Ride

image

Much like their previous outings, REC Watches allows us to own an actual part of the vehicle they choose to feature. For the RNR Arkonik, they are sourcing it directly from the abovementioned 1984 Land Rover Defender 110 UJO. The result is nothing short of amazing as the design and accents are carefully curated to best represent the essence of this British-built beauty.

Let’s start with the 40-mm square case with rounded corners crafted out of 316L stainless steel. We love how they went with three different finishes: sandblasted, polished, and vertical brushed. It different textures of the surfaces endow the RNR Arkonik with a nice contrast when the light hits it from different angles.

What follows is the durable Viton (FKM) rubber bezel in the shape of a tire. You can also find it on the crown. Beneath the sapphire crystal, is the soul of this limited-edition production, which is an aluminum dial cut from the 1984 Arkonik Land Rover Defender 110 UJO’s door. After the metal panel was stripped of its paint and primer, 302 dials were punched out to become bespoke elements on the RNR Arkonik.

No further treatment was necessary as REC Watches wanted to keep scuffs and dents that the SUV accumulated over the years. The hour and minutes are indicated by two skeleton hands. Meanwhile, a small seconds sub-dial sits at 9 o’clock as It shares the spot with the date window. The REC branding is just below 12 o’clock with the Arkonik badge at above 6 o’clock. You then have the minute track on the flange with an orange outer ring.

Referencing The UJO

image

Next up are the design references to the 1984 Arkonik Land Rover Defender 110 UJO. Look closer to spot the hour markers at 12, 3, and 6 o’clock in the shape of a fuel cap. A view from the right flank of the case band reveals crown protectors that resemble the front grille. Make your way to the caseback to spot engravings laser-etched engravings of the chassis décor. Finally, the rear cover channels the alloy wheels.

At the heart of the RNR Arkonik is a Swiss-made Sellita SW290-1 self-winding caliber. This 31-jewel mechanical movement beats at the frequency rate of 28,800 VPH (4.0 Hz) and touts a 38-hour power reserve. To finish off the theme, the watch receives a blue Viton (FKM) rubber strap. REC Watches plans to produce only 302 examples, so order yours before all units are spoken for.

About REC Watches

image

Founded in 2014 by Jonathan Kamstrup & Christian Mygh, the brand lives by the concept of “RECOVER, RECYCLE, RECLAIM.” Thus, they’ve shortened it into “REC” and appended it “Watches” to showcase their passion for both. Since they source materials directly from the vehicle or aircraft featured, each release is a treat for collectors. Furthermore, this means no two timepieces are ever the same. Aside from the RNR Arkonik, you can check out other cool offers from REC Watches.

In Less Than 24 Hours, Acura Sells Out All 350 Units Of The 2022 NSX Type S

One of the showstoppers at the 2021 Monterey Car Week was Honda’s luxury division’s reveal of the 2022 NSX Type S. Acura plans to produce only 350 examples of this everyday supercar and 300 are heading stateside. The remaining 50 are for the Japanese market. Unfortunately, those who plan to get one are out of luck because all are already spoken for.

Reports reveal that in less than 24 hours the entire fleet of 2022 NSX Type S bound for the United States sold out. This was supposedly confirmed by an Acura insider who also noted that all allocated units have been reserved with deposits. Even before the big reveal, interest surrounding the platform was already at an all-time high.

Perhaps the key factor behind this rush is Acura’s recent announcement regarding the vehicle. This might be the last chance for anyone to own the one since the next model year is apparently the last. Pricing starts at $169,500 for the standard trim and goes up to $182,500 with the lightweight package of automotive upgrades.

Of course, when it comes to the vehicle identification number (VIN), some discerning collectors have their preferences. We heard the unit tagged 001 commanded an insane price. Aside from its exclusive production run, the 2022 NSX Type S is no slouch when it comes to performance.

Acura endows the coupe with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine that produces 600 horsepower with 492 lb-ft of torque. Completing the powertrain is a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. It can complete 0-60 mph dash in less than three seconds with a top speed of 191 mph. We think the 2022 NSX Type S is a thrilling ride preview of when Acura finally goes all-electric in the future.

These Are the Most Expensive Watches Ever Sold

At a certain point — say, around the million dollar-mark — a watch transcends “exorbitantly expensive” and moves into its own category of horological insanity. There’s no common name for this category of watches, but the general theme is, “Who in the hell would pay that much for a watch?” Someone who buys race horses like they’re a pack of gum at the checkout counter; someone whose yachts tow little yachts behind them, for entering lagoons that are too small for the primary yachts. In short: someone to whom money doesn’t mean that much, or anything at all.

Which means there’s an argument to be made that the following watches are not worth all that much — at least to their owners. Most likely, they are another item in a vast collection, locked away in some vault deep underground, never to be worn.

But that’s not fun to think about. What’s fun to think about is if they were somehow yours. You would wear them, wouldn’t you? You’d give them their place in the sun, and when someone asked you if that was the world-famous watch that had been stolen from an underground vault in Geneva, you’d shrug and say, “What, this old thing? I picked it up off eBay for a $300 bucks. Pretty cool though, huh?”

While there are brands that slap a price tag on a watch like the ostensibly $55M Graff Hallucination, it’s not confirmed that anyone ever paid that for it. Others, still, might be “value at” $30M like the genuinely fascinating Breguet Marie-Antoinette Grand Complication watch, but again, that doesn’t mean they’ve been sold for that amount. Below are those that have actually realized the most eye-watering prices.

Patek Philippe ref. 1518 in Steel: $11M

Don’t be surprised if you see more than a couple Patek Philippe watches on this list. Watches in stainless steel selling for these kinds of prices, however, is slightly unexpected. The 1518 was the first perpetual calendar and chronograph ever made in series, and only four examples were produced in steel, during World War II, no less, when most people were busy killing one another.

Rolex Daytona ref. 6239 “Paul Newman”: $17.7M

Another crazy-expensive steel watch, the Rolex Daytona reference 6239 owned by Paul Newman is the most expensive Rolex watch ever auctioned. It was given to the actor by his wife, its case back inscribed with the very cool note to “Drive Carefully, Me.” Even cooler: Newman later handed it to his daughter’s boyfriend, James Cox, as a gift, when Cox said he didn’t own a watch. Given Newman’s cool cachet, it wasn’t all that surprising when the watch hammered for $17+M including the buyer’s premium.

Jacob & Co. is known for its showy and totally over-the-top extravagance. Sounds just about perfect for the boxer Floyd Mayweather’s style who purchased a watch titled the Billionaire for $18M in 2018. Although the watch itself might appear to be mostly made of diamonds, they’re actually mounted on an 18k white gold (seriously, why not platinum?) case — and if you can see past all the bling, there’s even a small skeletonized dial showing off a highly skeletonized movement featuring a tourbillon.

If you think wristwatches are expensive, just wait till you get into pocketwatches. You could get a couple dozen Richard Mille watches for the price of this famous one from Patek. It was owned by Henry Graves, Jr, a NYC banker and one of the most important watch collectors of all time, and includes 24 complications. Which, you know, might be a bit much, but is fun as hell.

Zen Love

In 2019, this crazy Patek Philippe watch took the mantle as the most expensive watch ever sold at auction. Even more striking (a pun!) is that it beats the next most expensive watch by a significant margin. A one-of-a-kind creation, it also holds the title of the most complicated watch Patek Philippe (known for complicated watches) ever made. It features 20 complications including a perpetual calendar and five different chiming modes.
