CAKE Partners With Vattenfall To Develop A Truly Fossil-Free Electric Motorcycle

It’s easy for companies to claim that their products are sustainable. The adjective is thrown around a lot these days and often allude to the eco-friendly characteristic of the item or service. However, what most of us neglect to consider is manufacturing. CAKE – with the help of Vattenfall – plans to develop a completely fossil-free electric motorcycle.

Most of us think that as long as our daily commute does not involve emissions, we’ve made a contribution to the green initiative. Unfortunately, the production and shipping phase normally involve traditional means. Somebody needs to address this to truly earn the distinction of being carbon neutral.

CAKE is a Swedish marque that produces lightweight electric motorcycles. Its partner in the noble endeavor is European energy outfit Vattenfall. Both sides are eager to share their ideas on how to approach the situation and finally take fossil fuels out of the equation. We’ve seen unique proposals in the past and are eager for more.

While the two come up with specifics, a co-branded concept teases what the future may bring. The image shows a sleek motorcycle with a sizeable battery back within the frame. Judging by the chunky tires, this two-wheeler will tackle any terrain with ease.

Head of Corporate Sustainability at Vattenfall, Annika Ramsköld says, “this collaboration is an excellent example of how we can contribute with fossil-free know-how and supply chain expertise in a specific product that drives towards zero emissions.”

It sounds impossible right now, but CAKE and Vattenfall seem confident of their venture. In fact, the fossil-free electric motorcycle should be ready for mass production in 2025. Unnamed third-party specialists will likewise contribute resources and knowledge to the project.

The Zeitwerk Honeygold Lumen Is the Ultimate A. Lange & Söhne Watch

Watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne is passionately acclaimed for its impressive engineering, refined finishing and German sensibility — if you’ve held any “Lange” watch in your hand you know it’s something special. The brand also has a few signatures that it’s particularly known for, three of which have come together in a single watch, the Zeitwerk Honeygold “Lumen,” which celebrates the modern company’s (re-)birthday.

The Zeitwerk is a distinctive watch to begin with, featuring a digital time display with the hours indicated in an aperture on the left and balanced by the minutes on the right. Don’t let the term “digital” throw you off, though, as this is a fully mechanical, hand-wound watch — the minutes display itself is “digital” in the sense that a separate disc is used for each digit, jumping instantaneously and precisely as the minute changes. Only the seconds (at 6 o’clock) and power reserve (12 o’clock) use traditional analog displays.

Although the information displayed is simple, all of this makes for some complicated mechanics underneath and a strikingly interesting and original watch. This is the A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk as we know it, typically executed with otherwise conservative aesthetics and finishes, as is the case for the majority of Lange watches. Sometimes, though, the brand gets a little edgy, modern and perhaps even sporty with its “Lumen” models. These are watches that emphasize the bold numerals with strong luminescent paint and feature semi-transparent dials so you can see the discs beneath as they do their dance.

watch

Courtesy

It’s not hyperbole to state that the standard production Zeitwerk is itself is exceptional, but in a Lumen execution it feels even more so, doubling down on its modern demeanor. But the brand wasn’t done making its birthday launch special: You see, A. Lange & Söhne has its own gold alloy called Honeygold which, just like it sounds, has a pale but warm hue that must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. In addition to these external features, this Zeitwerk is also powered by a new movement that increases its power reserve to a pretty decent 72 hours.

Although familiar, Honeygold and Lumen treatments from the brand are still rare and typically saved for special editions. Although neither these elements nor the Zeitwerk model are themselves new, in combination they make for something of an “ultimate Lange” watch for many brand fans. And many of us will remain fans and admire these creations from afar, but if you’ve got $145,000 to spend on a watch, you could do a lot worse than a remarkable version of one of the most interesting and impressive timepieces made today.

These Special Watch Bezels Are a Big Help to Travelers

Welcome to Further Details, a recurring column where we investigate what purpose an oft-overlooked product element actually serves. This week: the 12-hour rotating watch bezel.

Your simple sport watch might not be fulfilling all its potential. If it’s merely been telling you the time but also features a rotating bezel — that ring around the crystal with markers or scales on it — there’s a good chance it can work harder for you. Not all bezels turn, but on many sport watches they rotate in one direction or both — if you don’t already know whether or not your watch has this kind of turning bezel, now’s the time to go ahead and find out. We’ll wait.

damasko dk10
Damasko DK10 with 12-Hour Bezel

Damasko

The type of watch made especially for displaying a second time zone is called a GMT, and it uses an additional hand on the dial that shows the hour in 24-hour format. Depending on the age of the watch and the design, this is usually accomplished with the aid of a rotating bezel with 24 hours markers.

However, if you have a watch with a rotating bezel and 12 hour markers, congratulations: you can use it to track the time in a second time zone without the need for a GMT movement: Just align the bezel’s hour markers to correspond to the time difference that’s relevant to you, and presto: you can read the local time by where the hands are pointing on the dial, and the “away” time according to where the hands are pointing on the bezel (or vice versa, if you choose). For example: NYC is 5 hours behind London. If you travel to London and want to know what time it is back home, you would rotate the bezel 5 clicks to the right until “7” appeared above the watch’s 12 o’clock hour marker. Now, the hours in NYC correspond to the hours in local London time. (You simply have to account for AM and PM.)

Even among sport watches with rotating bezels, those with 12-hour markings aren’t as common as timepieces with count-up (dive style) bezels — which is unfortunate, because they offer a simpler, more affordable alternative to a GMT. They’re not only more useful than the typical three-hander, but the prominent and technical-looking bezel gives a watch that sporty look that’s so popular. It’s well worth seeking out a watch with this feature, and thankfully, we’ve been seeing more and more of them hitting the market lately.

The Best and Biggest Gadgets of October 2021

October brought a whole ton of new products this year, including drops from Apple like the redesigned MacBook Pros and new AirPods, plus things like Google’s next flagship phone, the Pixel 6.

Here’s what you need to know about from this month.

14- and 16- MacBook Pros

tech roundup

Apple

Without a doubt, the biggest new product announcement was Apple’s new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros. They’re decked out with features that Pro users have been asking for years, such as more ports, a physical row of function keys, the return of MagSafe charging, an even more beautiful display and a better webcam. More importantly, they can be configured with Apple’s new higher-end silicone chipsets, the M1 Pro and M1 Max, which promise to put even last year’s much-lauded M1 chipset to shame in terms of power, graphics and efficiency.

The new MacBook Pros are available for preorder now and start shipping next week (October 26).

AirPods (3rd-Generation)

tech roundup

Apple

After months of rumors, Apple finally announced its third-generation AirPods and they are the new middle child of Apple’s AirPods lineup. They are priced between the AirPods (now just $129) and the AirPods Pro, and they look and work like a mix of the two as well. They have the shorter stem of the AirPods Pro, but also lack the in-ear design and silicone eartips — so they fit in your ears more similarly to the original AirPods. And they lack the active-noise cancellation and transparency modes modes of the Pro, but still support spatial audio and adaptive EQ. That said, Apple did these new AirPods some unique features, such as a magnetic charging case that can stick to a MagSafe charger (although there’s no charging speed advantage) and the best battery life (up to 6 hours per earbud) of any AirPods to date.

The third-generation AirPods are available for preorder now and start shipping next week (October 26).

Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

Google

Google announced its much-anticipated flagship smartphones, the Pixel 6 and the Pixel Pro. Not only do they have the most “Pro” displays and camera systems that Google has ever put in its smartphones, but they also are the first Pixels to feature Google’s new custom processor called Tensor. This new custom processor was specifically designed for Pixels (similar to how Apple designs its own iPhone chipsets) and it will help them really excellent battery life and power some of the fancy AI features (such as real-time language translations and new computational photography skills) that Pixels have become known for. As far as differences between the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, there aren’t many. The Pro has a bigger better display, an extra telephoto lens, and a better selfie camera.

The Pixel 6 starts at $599 and the Pixel 6 Pro starts at $899. Both be preordered right now and will hit shelves October 28.

Let Personality Shine Through With Swarovski’s Collection I

The best gifts are those that mirror the style of the recipient. With Swarovski’s Collection I, you’ll find plenty of crystals to let any personality shine through. Designed by Creative Director Giovanna Engelbert, the Dulcis and Millennia families each embody their own unique vision of elegance. The Dulcis family taps into the aesthetics of Pop Art sculpture, consisting of colorful, vibrant shapes that are set with contrasting cushion-cut crystals for a look that’s reminiscent of soft candy. The Millennia family combines multiple clear crystal shapes and cuts for a collection that’s extravagant, but still elegant and classic. While both collections embody Swarovski’s legacy in luxury jewelry, each set of crystals represents an equally unique vision and personality. Whether you’re looking to showcase someone’s playful side or accentuate their refined sensibilities, Swarovski’s Collection I contains timeless jewels perfect for gifting.

All the Coolest Watches That Came Out in October 2021

As your shorts and sandals go back into storage and the long sleeves come out for the season, have you stopped to consider the watches that’ll see you through the winter? Maybe it’s time — if you live in the upper latitudes of the northern hemisphere, at least, where we’re well aware that the cold is coming. If you needed more of a reminder than the chilly winds, watch brands are releasing ice-themed watches as well as dressier affairs that’ll slip under those layered cuffs. That’s not all, though, as there was a wide range of colorful and season-defying releases this month, as well. Check out those and much more from October’s watch releases below.

Timex Q Reissue Falcon Eye Green

We’ll say it again: you can’t get more style for the money than what the Q Timex collection offers. The first Falcon Eye model in two-tone gold and steel with a blue dial was utterly stunning for tis price, and now you’ve got a relatively toned down option with a similarly shimmering dial in green.

Nivada Depthmaster Jellyfish

Replacing a watch’s seconds hand with intentionally pixelated-looking art has put the French company Seconde/Seconde on the horological map. It’s controversial, but it turns out rather popular, too, as this sold-out collaboration on Nivada’s Depthmaster shows. Here, it’s a pixelated jellyfish (though it looks a bit like an octopus, no?) that kinda fits with the model nicknamed (“Pac Man”) due to its distinctive numerals.

Zero’s Lively New FXE Just Might Be the Ultimate Lane-Splitting Ninja

What, exactly, is the Zero FXE?

It’s Zero’s new affordable electric commuter motorcycle. Developed in collaboration with San Francisco’s renowned Huge Design, the Zero FXE is billed as “the motorcycle of tomorrow, available today.” Granted, this dirtbike-looking street bike bears a strong resemblance to the dirtbike-looking FXS that came before; however, this model boasts significant aesthetic, ergonomic and performance advantages over that one. Those upgrades are reflected in the pricing: the FXE starts at $11,795, or $1,850 more than the FXS.

Is the FXE new?

Relatively. The Zero FXE rolled out to dealers in late July.

What makes this Zero special?

The aforementioned team-up with Huge Design brought this concept vehicle to life with uncommon panache. The FXE boasts custom LED headlights and a bonded TFT display, plus a surprisingly functional, comfortable and frankly dope-looking form factor that makes it super-easy to handle, even with a seat height (32.9 inches) that could be tricky for a beginning rideror a 29-inch-inseamer like yours truly.

The prime reason: this bike weighs just 298 pounds, making it quite easy to stay upright with just one foot on the ground.

zero motorcycles

Zero Motorcycles

Another standout feature is what lies under the proverbial hood. The FXE boasts a Z-Force 75.5 air-cooled brushless electric motor that produces 78 ft-lbs of torque and 46 horsepower. That may not seem impressive, until you factor in the poundage — and contemplate the resulting (and pretty compelling) power-to-weight ratio. Meanwhile, the 7.2-kWh lithium ion battery is good for a century of mileage in the city. For context, that’s twice the range the FXS offers — which alone might make the price difference a pittance.

Additionally, the FXE boasts a pretty seamless interface with the bike’s integrated technology. The Cypher II operating system, together with a Bluetooth connection, enables the rider to tweak the torque, top speed, regenerative braking and other preferences with the touch of a button. You can also quickly toggle the ride mode from the energy-efficient Eco to the blacktop-slashing Sport right from the handlebars.

How does it ride?

When I wrote about Indian’s caveman-ish Scout Bobber Sixty nearly a year ago, I mentioned I was itching to get to this section. And I feel similarly with the FXE, but for totally different reasons. While the Sixty was great for easy-breezy city cruising, the FXE is virtually unmatched when you need to get from one end of town to the other…fast.

Like Teslas on two wheels, every Zero bike boasts acceleration that will quietly leave pretty much any of its gas-powered brethren in the dust. This particular one is quick enough that, even on the West Side Highway, where the traffic lights are fairly spaced out, I could ease to the front of the line, twist the throttle when the light changed — and be on the back bumper of cars up ahead while they were still seeing red.

zero motorcycles

Zero Motorcycles

Another anecdote to prove the point, perhaps? During a jaunt up Sixth Avenue, I waited several seconds after the light had turned green, then shot past everyone as the lights changed just in time for my future-cycle to dip under them. And yet, what really impressed me about the FXE was not just the torque, but how the combination of pickup and maneuverability enabled me to dart in and out of traffic in incredibly efficient, satisfying (and probably illegal) ways.

One Friday evening, riding from the west side of Manhattan to a birthday party at a downtown Brooklyn lounge, I intentionally left a bit late just to see how much time I could make up. Thanks to the FXE’s streamlined profile and nimble handling, I truly felt like a video game character as I silently diagonaled Bleecker and sped down Chrystie Street toward the Manhattan Bridge. I flew over the water, zigzagged through countless cars on Flatbush Avenue…and pulled up to the party before the birthday girl had even arrived.

While the advertised top speed (85 mph) and highway range (40 miles at 70 mph) make this bike a dodgy long-distance proposition, experiences like that nearly supersonic borough-to-borough frolic convince me that in the urban commuting game, the FXE is a world-class contender.

Anything else stand out about the FXE?

Here’s the catch, which I hate to say comes up whenever I write about Zeroes. As awesome as electric bikes are, urban apartment dwellers face a real hurdle: charging. This particular model comes with a cable that stashes conveniently into a little slot under the passenger pegs, plugs into any standard 110-volt or 220-volt outlet and charges the bike to 95 percent in 9.2 hours. That makes it just about perfect for overnight replenishing…for anyone with a garage.

zero motorcycles

Zero Motorcycles

Someone like me — who lives in an apartment — has to take it to a city parking structure. With the bike’s range being pretty much as advertised, I only took it for charging once, on a Sunday morning — and paid $36 to park on 19th Street for three hours, plus $5 per hour for charging (which the attendant simply pocketed). That’s a total of $51, or more than a dollar per mile. Considering I can fill my ol’ Triumph Bonneville T100‘s little tank with premium gas for about 12 bucks and go something like 150 miles, the math here is…bleak.

In fairness, this conundrum is not Zero’s fault; Manhattan is one of the most expensive places to park in the whole country, and one of the worst places to own any type of EV. If I actually owned a Zero and had a monthly parking pass at a garage, I imagine I could arrange a pretty cozy charging situation. There’s also a decent chance that a decade from now, we’ll all be in or on electric vehicles — and the motorcycle of tomorrow will not only be available, but easily chargeable.

What’s it cost?

The Zero FXE starts at $11,795. Adding the optional quick charger, which cuts the 95 percent charging time considerably — from 9.2 hours to 3.6 hours — increases the price by $600 to $12,395.

Bad MF: The Life and Movies of Samuel L. Jackson

As its title makes clear, this new biography of iconic Hollywood badass Samuel L. Jackson pulls no punches. It is an exploration and celebration of the life and work of the coolest man in Hollywood. From his star-making turns in the films of Spike Lee and Tarantino to his roles in the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, to cult classsics like Snakes on a Plane, the man delivers. So does this new book.

The Ford Mustang Could Go Hybrid As Soon as Next Year, Leak Suggests

Like most carmakers, Ford usually doesn’t comment on upcoming vehicles, but juicy information always finds a way to trickle out. Sometimes it’s dealers or suppliers leaking a camera photo; other times, like in this case…it’s a Ford engineer trying to flex on LinkedIn.

The folks over at the Mustang7G forum recently uncovered a Ford product development engineer’s profile on LinkedIn. The profile lists work on powertrain development for the next-generation S650 Mustang. It details two engines specifically: 2.3-liter inline-four and 5.0-liter V8 hybrids. The profile also notes the S650 being a 2023 model year vehicle, suggesting an imminent reveal of the new Mustang next year.

If we presume this LinkedIn post is credible, there’s much we don’t know. We don’t know whether the hybrid Mustangs will be the only versions on offer. And “hybrid” could mean different things. They could be mild hybrids like Mercedes’s EQ boost engines that improve fuel economy and smooth out low-end turbo lag. Or they could be plug-ins offering a substantially more oomph and noticeable EV-only range.

Using our powers of deduction, we would bet on the new engines being mild hybrid variants of the current model; why keep the same displacements if you develop new engines? Besides, some have speculated the S650 Mustang may be more like a facelift for the current S550 as Ford prepares to phase out combustion versions in favor of an all-electric Mustang; it’s hard to see FoMoCo spending too much money updating the powertrains ahead of that.

Even if it’s a hybrid, a 5.0-liter V8 Mustang could end up being the last V8-powered pony/muscle car off the line. Chevy is canceling the Camaro entirely in 2023, which is around the time we’ll see Dodge pivot to “American eMuscle.”

John Legend Tunes Up a Sperry Signature in New Collab

Few pairs of footwear are as iconic as Sperry’s signature Boat Shoe. Practically defining the definitive “deck shoe” style, Sperry’s brand is synonymous with the silhouette. With Sperry launching a collaboration collection with award-winning musician John Legend, it makes perfect sense that the partnership would incorporate a take on Sperry’s flagship shoe. John Legend’s tune up of the signature Sperry Boat Shoe goes in a distinctly plush direction, swapping a smooth leather upper for a soft suede. The sole of the shoe is supported by a proprietary PLUSHWAVE footbed, featuring an embossed ring of piano keys along outer edge of the insole (it is a John Legend collaboration after all). If you’re in the market for an alternative to the traditional Sperry Boat Shoe, this upscale option is available in four different colors — sand (our personal choice), rust, gunmetal and Air Force blue — over at Nordstrom.

Complete Your Winter Wardrobe With J.Crew Nordic’s Collection

style

Courtesy

Winter is nearing. In the Northeast — or at least in Pittsburgh, where I am — it’s already rearing its head, forcing temperatures down into the mid-to-low-40s at night and only as high as 55 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. And damn is it dreary. (But, again, that’s a Pittsburgh problem; it could be quite sunny wherever you are; I’m envious.)

I’ll admit it, though. J.Crew’s Nordic Collection made me at least a little excited for the cold(er) weather to come — even the overcast skies, or a few feet of snow. “Inspired by vintage outdoor gear and designed to perform,” the collection offers colorful Fair Isle fleeces, similarly striking hiker boots, PrimaLoft outerwear, scenic socks, insulated over-the-ankle boots and much, much more — and a bunch of it is on sale now.

Admittedly, it’s not all that rare to see sales this time of year. It’s “shopping season,” aka the runway leading to Hanukkah, Christmas and other seasonal holidays (Singles Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday included). But it’s abnormal to see seasonally appropriate stuff hit the sale racks, or pages, per se. I know it’s likely because the Crew has a hell of a lot of inventory to offload, but there’s something to be said about making outerwear accessible. Affordability is of course subjective but high-quality, sub-$200 boots and jackets? You just don’t find those that often.

A lot of this collection’s made with eco-friendlier materials like Econyl (regenerated nylon), recycled polyester and cotton or PrimaLoft (down made from recycled water bottles), too, which lessens the blow of buying something so mass produced. Good on you, J.Crew.
