This Affordable Timex Is Your New Tactical Watch

An all-black watch is a statement. While black-on-black dials aren’t always that easy to read, they challenge the onlooker to consider why anyone wears a watch to begin with. (Clearly, there other ways of knowing the time.) The point is style, of course — and Todd Snyder has once again teamed up with Timex to deliver a watch in the popular Q Timex collection that is nothing if not stylish.

The collaboration with Todd Snyder has been responsible for many of the most sought-after Timex watches in the last decade. Add the designer’s sensibility to the popular, vintage-inspired “Q” collection, and you’re sure to have a hit. The latest (not the first) takes the Q Timex’s sporty, dive-watch-reminiscent design and gives it an all-black treatment — meaning its 38mm steel case gets a black coating, and its hands and indices have a dark look that provides little contrast against the black dial.

style
Timex x Todd Snyder Q Blackout Watch is emphasizes style over functionality.

Courtesy

It’s driven by a quartz movement, and the bezel actually rotates and features (in low-contrast) dive-time-style markings. Even if it were easy to read, however, it’s inadvisable to use this in a diving situation, as its water resistance is only 50m. It all might seem a little ironic when you stop and think about all this functionality that’s not really useable, but if you’re worried about those things, you’re missing the point of a blacked-out Timex watch: looking hip as hell for a cool $189.

The Best Deodorants for Men

style

Courtesy

There’s no nice way to say it: humans are sweaty creatures. And while you’re mostly dealing with water here, some parts of your body (like, say, your armpits) also secrete proteins and fatty acids. These things are harmless but annoying; when they react to bacteria on the body, you get a little thing called trans-3-Methyl-2-hexenoic acid — a.k.a. body odor.

You already know what to do, of course. But before you reach for the same old stick you’ve been using since the first day of middle school, you might want to consider your other options. There are lots of ingredients and methods of application to consider. When it comes to something as essential as deodorant, it’s worth sweating the small stuff.

Best natural deodorant

Hoppin’ Fresh Deodorant

Ursa Major

Made entirely from naturally derived ingredients, such as hops, aloe vera and eucalyptus, this stick from Vermont’s Ursa Major fights odor and wetness without unwanted chemicals or irritants. For an even gentler option, check out the brand’s fragrance-free Base Layer Deodorant. Both options are available in 1.65- and 2.6-ounce canisters.

Best Smelling Deodorant

Deodorant

Baxter of California

Baxter of California’s deodorant is effective at beating body odor but don’t fool yourself. You’re paying a premium, not for the scent it takes away, but for what it offers: an addicting combination of citrus and musk. It’s crisp, fresh and smells good enough to convince you to skip the cologne.

Best Antiperspirant Deodorant

Body Fuel Antiperspirant

From one of the most respected names in skincare comes this unscented antiperspirant designed for one thing and one thing only: to keep your pits dry. Good thing it works.

Best Travel Deodorant

Déodorant

There are three things you need to know about Aesop’s ultra-premium deodorant spray: it’s expensive, it has alcohol and it’s heavily fragranced, with a bevy of essential oils that give it a woody, almost spicy aroma. If all that tracks for you, it’s a unique option with a ton of character. Plus, it’s packed in a 1.7 oz bottle and proves powerful enough to sub in for fragrance.

Best Prescription-Strength Antiperspirant

Antiperspirant Roll-On

Certain Dri

Need something with a little more oomph? This is the most powerful over-the-counter antiperspirant you’ll find at the drugstore, delivering up to 72 hours of protection thanks to the same active ingredient in the prescription stuff: aluminum chloride.

Best Deodorant for Sensitive Skin

Dry Touch Deodorant

Though more popular in Europe, the French drugstore brand Vichy deserves a shout here. Its roll-on, alcohol-free Dry Touch Deodorant goes on easy and features the brand’s signature mineralized water, sourced from France’s Auvergne region, to help protect your skin against aggressors.

Best Drugstore Deodorant

High Endurance Original Scent Deodorant

It works. It’s cheap. It smells like dads (in a sort of endearing way). It’s not the best option on this list, but if you’re on a budget and favor function over flair, it’s tough to beat Old Spice’s High Endurance line.

Best Affordable Antiperspirant

Power Unscented Antiperspirant Deodorant

Speed Stick

Same deal as Old Spice — cheap, available — only without the dad smell. This one is a pure utility player. And every grooming routine could use a few more of those.

Reusable Deodorant

Performance Body Spray

OffCourt’s aerosol deodorant addresses stench-causing bacterias by encouraging the growth of good ones. Yes, this option is prebiotic, but it doesn’t just mask your musk. It smells fresh and complex despite coming from a can.

Best Sustainable Deodorant

Refillable Deodorant

Refillable deodorants have emerged in recent years to combat single-use plastic and take the effort out of buying — most brands follow the same subscription models made famous by Dollar Shave Club. Sound like something you might want to try? Check out Myro, which is cheaper than competitors like Helmm and By Humankind while offering more scents and case color options.

Best ‘Give Back’ Deodorant

Deodorant

Bravo Sierra

Free of aluminum, baking soda and parabens, Bravo Sierra’s woodsy-smelling deodorant uses cassava plant extract to battle nasty perspiration. And while the product is notable in its own right, the company actively supports US service members and their families by donating five percent of all sales to Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs.

Best mineral deodorant

Natural Mineral Deodorant

Lumin addresses deadly B.O. with a natural mineral blend, meaning this stick neutralizes and detoxifies the area without aluminum or alcohol.

best affordable deodorant

Odor and Sweat Control Antiperspirant

For just five bucks, Harry’s offers an odor and sweat controlling antiperspirant that’s free from aluminum, scented with a musk they’ve named “Stone” and easily available at most big box stores — like Target, for example.

Best deodorant for dense (armpit) hair

Aluminum-Free Deodorant

Bevel’s line of body and grooming goods cater specifically to Black men, covering shaving creams for ingrowns and aluminum-free deodorants that penetrate coarse or curly armpit hair.

Best Deodorant Bundle

Natural Deodorant

Hawthorne’s site offers a quiz for interested users. In it you’re asked to describe your skin, hair, grooming habits and go-to hobbies. From your answers, Hawthorne compiles a complete grooming routine: a custom fragrance, a few targeted formulas and, of course, deodorant. You can order the deodorant on its own, but it compliments the complete kit quite well.

Time to Get Baked. Here Are the Different Types of Bakeware You Should Know

bakeware

Bed Bath & Beyond

As intimidating as baking may seem, it’s not that hard as long as you properly follow recipes, go by the correct ratios and have the right set of bakeware. We talk a lot about cookware — the stuff that goes on top of your stove (and occasionally inside the oven) — but we don’t talk as much about bakeware. There are a variety of bakeware types, and none are really that “essential” unless you plan on doing a lot of cooking in the oven. But if you’re looking to brush up on your bakeware knowledge, here are some of the most common bakeware pieces to know.

Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

Baking Sheet

Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Commercial Baker’s Half Sheet, Set of 2

Baking sheets go by a lot of names: sheet trays, cookie sheets, baking trays. All you need to know is how important they are for cooking so many things in the oven. Besides being used for baking cookies, pastries and other sweet treats, baking sheets are also part of the huge “sheet tray dinners” trend, in which cooks put a bunch of food onto a sheet and bake it together — sort of like a remix of the one-pot meal. Get them in a variety of sizes, and you can also opt to get an accompanying rack to help with airflow while baking.

Baking Dish

Le Creuset Stoneware Heritage Rectangular Dish

Baking dishes, compared with baking sheets, have a higher perimeter and are primed for making casseroles and lasagnas. They’re either made of ceramic or glass, and they also serve as their own serving tray. If you’ve ever seen someone gift someone a casserole, it was probably housed in a baking dish.

Bundt Pan

Nordic Ware ProForm Bundt

“Bundt cakes” don’t refer to a specific recipe, rather they indicate the type of bakeware used to bake the cake. They’re notable for their hollowed-out center and rounded, circular design. They create a doughnut-like shape as if a bunch of doughnuts were stacked on top of each other. There’s no single “bundt” design, so find one that you like best — and one that churns out a cake you think looks the most delicious.

Cake Pans

Our Table Aluminum Bakeware 3-Piece Round Cake Pan Set

If you want to bake a cake, you better have some cake pans. They’re available in a number of sizes and shapes, so you can make square cakes, tiered circular cakes and more. Make sure to grease them well before pouring batter in, otherwise you’ll be left with cake crumbs instead of a cake.

Loaf Pan

USA Pan Pro Line Nonstick Loaf Pan

Try making your own bread, and you’ll never go back to the store-bought stuff again. Just make sure you have a loaf pan so you don’t end up with a misshapen blob of bread instead of a loaf. And if you’re feeling savory, the loaf pan helps to make a well-shaped meatloaf.

Muffin Tin

Amazon Basics Nonstick Muffin Baking Pan

Whether you want to bake muffins or cupcakes, you’re going to need a muffin tin. They’re available in a number of sizes, so find one with enough cavities that’ll satisfy your muffin craving. A lot of muffin tins come in a non-stick material, but the silicone ones make it easier to pop out the muffins.

Pie Plate

Great Jones Sweetie Pie

The shallow-dished pie plate will have you pumping out pies like a professional baker. The rim of the dish will usually be crimped so that your baked pie comes out looking like a picture-perfect pie.

Roasting Pan

Circulon Nonstick Roasting Pan

Now 23% off

Every piece of bakeware so far has dealt in the sweets department, but the roasting pan is meant to get your roast meats on. The rack within the pan keeps your protein elevated so that it’s not sitting in its own juices, and you can also place aromatics and vegetables underneath to catch those sweet meat juices.

Springform Pan

Wilton Advance Select Premium Nonstick Springform Pan

A springform pan is basically a cake pan with a removable base. The walls of the springform pan are secured with a latch, and when you’re ready to take your cake out, you unlatch it so that the base can come loose. Any dessert that’s delicate and can’t be inverted to let loose from the cake pan should be made in a springform pan (think cheesecakes, tarts or frozen desserts).

The Best MVMT Watches

The entrée into “proper” watch collecting (whatever the hell that is) needn’t take the form of some high-end, mechanical watch. All you need is something that fits your budget, that’s satisfying to wear and that, ideally, you can appreciate for more than simply telling the time. In other words: something that makes you happy. Among brands that are known to deliver this along with attractive design and affordable prices, MVMT is one of the most popular.

Pronounced like “movement,” MVMT is a young brand with an overwhelmingly young customer base that has had an impressive rise. Founded in California in 2013 by two college dropouts, the brand first raised money via crowdfunding site Indiegogo and only a few short years later sold the company to the Movado Group for $300 million in 2018. (Moral of the story: College is overrated. Found a watch company instead.)

Minimalist design that can function as part of your larger wardrobe is the brand’s calling card. That, and affordability, with prices that fall between roughly $100 and $300 and plenty to choose from: there are 19 men’s collections alone, each containing multiple models. Whether you’re just getting interested in watches, are looking for a gift, want a simple and affordable dress watch (there are even a couple automatic options) or just a weekend beater — MVMT’s got one to fit the bill. Check out some of our favorites below.

A Beginner’s Guide to Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program

If you’re somebody who wants to always have the latest and greatest iPhone, you’re probably well aware of the iPhone Upgrade Program. Apple launched it back in 2015 as a way to set up customers with each new iPhone the day it launches while saving some money on it by also trading in their older iPhone.

But how does it work, and is it worth using?

How does the iPhone Upgrade Program work?

If you’re new to the iPhone Upgrade Program, you simply order your new iPhone through it: here. You select which of the four new iPhones — iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max — that you want, as well which color and storage configuration, and then you choose how you want to pay for it. You can pay the full price of the iPhone in one quick hit or you can pay over the course of 24 months.

If you’re already a part of the iPhone Upgrade Program, all you have to do is sign into your account and when order the new iPhone model, after you choose your carrier (or lack there of) there’s an option that asks if you’re part of the upgrade program. You then follow the instructions and finish your order. A separate box with then be shipped to your house, and you’ll have up to two weeks (14 days) to use the included shipping label to return it back to Apple.

Should you pay for the iPhone monthly or in full?

When ordering through the iPhone Upgrade Program, you have two choices of payment: either up front and in fall or over a 24-month period of time. Here’s what you need to know:

Option #1: Pay for the iPhone in full

If you pay for the new iPhone in full up front, you then own it. And then in 12 months time when the new iPhone comes out, you can then trade in last year’s iPhone to Apple and then they’ll deduct the trade-in value from from the price of the new iPhone. The trade-in value of your old iPhone will vary on the model you have (and condition it’s in), but it’ll typically be between 40% to 50% of what you paid for it.

For example, if you bought an iPhone 12 for $799, it’d have a trade-in value of approximately $450. So when you upgrade to the iPhone 13, Apple will subtract the $450 off of the $799 price tag. This means that over the course of owning the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 13, you’ll have paid about $1,148.

Option #2: Pay for the iPhone over 24 months

If you don’t want to pay the full price of the iPhone up front, you have the option to pay for the iPhone over a 24-month (two-year) period. The monthly cost will vary depending on which iPhone model you choose — ranging from $29/month for the iPhone 13 mini to $46/month for the iPhone 13 Pro Max — and it means that when the new iPhone comes out the following year, you’ll have paid for half of the cost of your current iPhone.

When you trade in your current iPhone for the new model, you’ll then switch to a new 24-month cycle of fees to start paying off your new iPhone. The end price ends up being comparable but not quite as good compared to if you bought the iPhone out in full.

For example (and using the same example as above), if you bought an iPhone 12 for $33.29/month and then you decided you wanted to upgrade to the iPhone 13 when it came out after 12 months, you would’ve paid about $399.48 for the iPhone 12 and then you’d switch to paying $33.29/month for the iPhone 13. For the sake of this argument, say you decide to not upgrade to the iPhone 14 and pay out the full 24-month payments, you would’ve paid a total of about $1,198 for the two iPhones.

This means that in the long term, the Upgrade Program is a slightly better deal if you pay the full price of the iPhone rather than monthly installments.

iphone 13
If you’re the type to lust after each new iPhone on launch day, Apple’s upgrade program may be for you.

Tucker Bowe

The Pros of iPhone Upgrade Program

There are a couple big advantages to buying a new iPhone through Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program.

First and most obviously, it guarantees that you’ll almost get half of what you paid for your older iPhone. If you were to trade-in your old iPhone to Apple and you weren’t part of the Upgrade Program, they’d offer you significantly less. Tech hardware depreciates quickly.

The second big advantage to using the iPhone Upgrade Program is that it includes a two-year AppleCare+ warranty and it will cover up to two accidents. For instance, if you drop your iPhone and crack the screen or bust a button, then Apple will repair it for free (or a small fee).

Just because you sign up for the Upgrade Program doesn’t mean you have to upgrade your iPhone every year. For example, if you have an iPhone 12 and weren’t blown away by the iPhone 13, you can wait and by the following year you’ll own the iPhone 12 outright (because you’ll have paid off the 24-month subscription fees) and your AppleCare+ would have expired, so you’ll want to upgrade. You won’t get quite as much in trade-value now that your iPhone 12 is two-years old (when the iPhone 14 comes out), but you’ll still get a good deal.

Why you might not want to join the iPhone Upgrade Program

The main reason why you would not join the iPhone Upgrade Program is if you’re not somebody who needs the latest and greatest iPhone every year. The reality is that the iPhone Upgrade Program gets you a good deal, but it’s still expensive. And the majority people don’t get a new smartphone every year. In fact, it’s common for people to hold onto the same smartphone for several years before upgrading.

The other downside is that the iPhone Upgrade Program locks you into a 24-month subscription — unless you want to upgrade to a newer iPhone after 12 months. So, if you decide you want to get the newest Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy smartphone and return your iPhone midway through your payments, you’re out of luck.

GAUSSIN Announces The Hydrogen-Electric TheH2 RACING TRUCK As Its 2022 Dakar Rally Entry

In a little over a month and a half, the prestigious 2022 Dakar Rally is set to begin. The grueling race will push man and machine to the limit as they traverse the unforgiving deserts of Saudi Arabia. As the day draws near, manufacturers and groups participating steadily unveil their entries. There are a few that stand out and among them is the TheH2 RACING TRUCK.

So far, the cars that have caught people’s attention are the sustainable ones. Most automakers have already proven the reliability of their zero-emission models for everyday use. However, many are eager to show what they have under development for more challenging terrain. GAUSSIN intends to do exactly that with its hydrogen fuel cell behemoth.

Although the stocky silhouette seems to classify it under the T5 category, sources claim the TheH2 RACING TRUCK will be tagged as T4. Anyway, what really matters here is for GAUSSIN to highlight the capabilities of hydrogen-electric setups. Given the number of vehicles with similar powertrains, it will be an exciting event to spectate.

Renowned design group Pininfarina is responsible for the beefy yet sleek outline of the truck. In the meantime, its aerodynamic body rides on GAUSSIN’s modular EV architecture. The combination of the fuel cells and the 82-kWh batteries power two 402-horsepower electric motors. This pushes the TheH2 RACING TRUCK up to speeds of 90 mph with an approximate range of 155 miles.

Battery-electric systems may be the most dominant configurations right now, but hydrogen-powered technology is catching up. In fact, engineers find that the latter is a more feasible option for bigger forms of transportation. Depending on how well the GAUSSIN TheH2 RACING TRUCK tackles the extreme 2022 Dakar Rally, commercial models are sure to follow soon.

Kizer Knives Dabbles With A Magnetic System For Its Rhino EDC Folder

When it comes to EDC knives or blades in general, there’s not really much to innovate. Perhaps the use of special materials or maybe the introduction of new manufacturing methods count as such. Nonetheless, Kizer prepares to launch the Rhino – its latest folder. Aside from the sleek and stylish design, it also touts a unique folding gimmick.

To be honest, we’re not exactly sure how Kizer hopes to market this mechanism. Still, just the fact that how users can deploy or close the Rhino should give it an advantage over other contemporary models. We always love to see how engineers come up with ways to integrate magnets into anything.

You can actually flip open each scale separately and they will recouple with a satisfying snap courtesy of the magnetic system. The Rhino is an EDC knife, from a label that might not be as prestigious as the rest out there. Yet, enthusiasts and collectors have lauded many of its previous outings.

This implies the craftsmanship and durability is presumably top-notch, which is what you need to always consider. Survival experts will tell you to never compromise quality as it could mean life or death in certain scenarios.

Not to worry, because Kizer endows the Rhino with a Wharncliffe blade forged out of S35VN stainless steel. Moreover, the stonewashed finish adds a satin luster to the metal. It then matches with a pair of titanium scales with a classy two-tone aesthetic.

The anodized blue is a welcome contrast to the otherwise dull gray of the metal. Also, a section of the handles features knurling to improve your grip. Finally, the tip-up pocket clip secures the Rhino in place during transport.

There’s a Chance Audi Might Be Buying McLaren. Here’s Why That Would Make Sense

McLaren has been trying to raise money

McLaren would be the easiest way for Audi to get into F1

Audi (and Lamborghini) could help build a McLaren SUV

McLaren has thus far been a holdout about getting in on this SUV fad — a.k.a. the modern car market. But the Lamborghini Urus has been a massive sales success. Ditto for Rolls-Royce with the Cullinan. Aston Martin has an SUV. Ferrari has one in development. McLaren building an SUV will probably be a necessity for the bottom line.

Access to Audi engines and platforms — as it did with Lamborghini — could help McLaren get a profitable VW-platform-based SUV to market fairly quickly.

McLaren could help Lamborghini ditch V12 engines

Audi owns Lamborghini, and Lamborghini has a big engineering project ahead of itself. The company hasn’t released an all-new sports car — if we’re discounting the Urus — since 2014. The future will mean not just ditching the V12 engines for road cars, but producing future hybrid — Lamborghini has pledged to be all hybrid in some form by 2024 — and electric cars. McLaren engineering — already building hybrid sports cars —could help facilitate that project.

Seaweed tees? Biodegradable boots? Vegan pro models? The concept of using sustainable, novel manufacturing and materials in outdoor products is somewhat mainstream at this point, but what’s interesting about the newest crop of innovators is their use of materials that reflect the natural world in which we recreate, with enhanced performance that wouldn’t be possible in their raw state. Whether it’s merino wool, tencel, seaweed, vegan leather or hemp, the new guard of shoes and shirts built to perform in the outdoors have a hyper-focus on environmentally-conscious creation.

When it comes to materials, these six brands are doing things differently.

Satisfy blended organic cotton and SeaCell by Pyrate, which uses wood and seaweed to create a biodegradable and energy-saving material. It’s dyed with a natural botanical dye, as well. Beyond unconventional materials, the Cosmetic T-Shirt also features functional details like hidden inner stash pocket and exterior detachable tag.

Vans Introduces The UltraRange EXO Hi Gore-Tex MTE-3 As Its Latest Outdoor Boots

One way to know if a brand’s venture into something new was a success is a follow-up. Depending on the number of units moved, manufacturers will consider another version that packs more upgrades. Vans outdoor-ready boots probably meet the criteria as we welcome the UltraRange EXO Hi Gore-Tex MTE-3. Let’s learn about what it brings to the table, shall we?

All-weather protection should be on the top of your list given the unpredictability of Mother Nature. Nobody should find themselves in a difficult situation with the wrong gear. According to Vans, its MTE apparel lineup abide by three crucial principles. There’s thermoregulation, moisture management, and traction.

The UltraRange EXO Hi Gore-Tex MTE-3 packs all of these to keep your mind at ease. With your footing and comfort secured, there are fewer things to worry about as you tackle the trail. Meanwhile, adventurers are always on the lookout for equipment that can withstand almost everything.

Vans knows exactly what you need. Thus, the company engineers their footwear for the most demanding expedition. The UltraRange EXO Hi Gore-Tex MTE-3 is “built on the back of decades of snowboard boot development.” Now, let’s break down how the key elements are applied.

To keep the temperature in control, Vans uses a 3M Thinsulate lining to trap air and prevent heat loss. Next is the bootie, which works alongside the former and allows internal moisture to escape but keeps rain and snow out. Then there’s the All-Trac outsole rubber which lets you take each step with confidence.

Finally, comfort and performance come from the open-cell PU sockliner, an UltraRange UltraCrush EVA midsole, and the TPU arch cradle. Vans offers the UltraRange EXO Hi Gore-Tex MTE-3 in four colorways: Demitasse/Dark Gum, Pomegranate/Marshmallow, Black/Black, and (Arthur Longo) Marshmallow/Black.

This Cool Rolex Milgauss Camo Edition From MAD Paris Is A Very Limited Release

Certain brands have established an image that people immediately associate whenever it comes up in a conversation. Rolex watches are traditionally crafted out of the watchmaker’s signature Oystersteel or maybe 18-carat gold in some models. Nevertheless, we are always eager to see unique editions released like this stunning pre-owned Milgauss Camo Edition from MAD Paris.

What’s immediately striking about this timepiece is the finish on almost every surface save for some sections and the dial. Most custom jobs on luxury watches like a Rolex are often minor embellishments such as engravings and such. Not many aftermarket establishments want to change anything on an already iconic item.

Not MAD Paris though! This Milgauss Camo Edition now flaunts a camouflage DLC coat over its stainless-steel parts. The caseback, edge/interior side of the bracelet, and crown retain the original finish. Thus, this is a wrist candy for people who desire something with a tactical vibe.

Browsing the label’s catalog of customized Rolex watches, this is perhaps one of the more understated ones out there. What adds to its stealthy theme is the shop’s decision to go with a darker tone for its profile. The MAD Paris Rolex Milgauss Camo Edition features a dark gray dial, emblem, hour markers, and hands.

The only contrast comes from the lighter gray outline of the baton hour markers and white/orange printed text. We’re guessing that the internal remains intact because nobody wants to mess around with that unless necessary. A Manufacture Rolex 3131 self-winding movement with a 48-hour power reserve should still be ticking inside. Only 25 examples of the MAD Paris Rolex Milgauss Camo Edition will go on sale.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Is a Luxurious, Legitimate Off-Roader

all new 2022 jeep® grand cherokee trailhawk

Stellantis

The Wrangler is Jeep’s iconic off-roader. It’s why a Jeep brand exists in the first place. But these days, Jeep’s most popular — and arguably most important — vehicle is the Grand Cherokee. With the re-advent of the Wagoneer, the Grand Cherokee can no longer claim to be the brand’s flagship SUV, but it remains the volume seller, profit driver…and SUV that Stellantis will move heaven, earth and every available microchip to sell.

The all-new fifth-generation Grand Cherokee is arriving in three phases. The three-row Grand Cherokee L hit dealers last summer; now, Jeep is following up with the two-row Grand Cherokee, which will begin deliveries before the end of the year. The third phase will be the plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee 4xe, launching early next year.

Jeep brought media members to Moab, Utah — off-roading Mecca and the brand’s unofficial home away from home — to drive the new 2022 two-row Grand Cherokee. It was not because Moab was a convenient place to gather journalists — it certainly was not — but to underscore what makes the Grand Cherokee unique. The market teems with fancy midsize crossovers, and most of them pose as being adventurous. But the Grand Cherokee — when properly equipped — is the only one that can perform like a Jeep when it leaves the pavement.

And boy, can it do so.

Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

Why is the Jeep Grand Cherokee special?

Since first smashing through the plate glass in 1992, the Grand Cherokee has been the Jeep most buyers want and need. It has delivered solid on-road handling and comfort with a unibody platform and independent front and rear suspensions. The cabin has felt top-notch, and there’s always been ample cargo space. It makes all the compromises the Wrangler doesn’t — while still being a credible off-roader — and its success allows the Wrangler to remain uncompromised.

How does the Jeep Grand Cherokee drive on-road?

Like most midsize SUVs (there are exceptions), the Grand Cherokee is not a performance car. But it meets typical, everyday demands with a high-proficiency level. The Grand Cherokee has direct, well-weighted steering. Power delivery is smooth, most of the time. It handles corners without throwing its weight around. It was very comfortable cruising placidly around the blissfully empty two-lane highways around Moab.

The Grand Cherokee doesn’t reward aggressive driving. Going full lead-foot elicits a lot of groaning from its not-particularly-gratifying engines. The transmission can get out of sorts, start holding gears too long — and not intuit when you have calmed down. This is a car you want to play it cool with and keep between the lines.

Should you get the Grand Cherokee with a V6 or V8?

The Grand Cherokee comes with two engine options — for now. The base engine is the 290-hp 3.6-liter V6 Stellantis puts in everything from the Jeep Gladiator to the Chrysler Pacifica. You can upgrade to 357 hp and 390 lb-ft with a 5.7-liter V8. Usually, it would be obligatory for me as a car journalist to fluff my chest hair, grunt like Tim Allen and tell you to go for the V8. In reality, though, I would save some money and stick with the V6.

The only point of driving a V8 in 2021 is that it’s fun and gratifying. The Grand Cherokee V8 isn’t particularly dynamic; you don’t get a game-changing amount of power in everyday driving, and the sound doesn’t roar from the cabin. On my first leg driving a V8 Overland, I had to double-check that the car had the V8 on the spec sheet. You do get better max towing — 7,200 lbs — with the V8, but the V6 is no slouch, pulling up to 6,200 lbs. The one classic V8 feature the engine offers is crushing your fuel economy vs. the V6 by 4-5 mpg.

The V6 will be enough engine for most. And if you genuinely need an upgrade, wait for the 4xe, which should outperform the V8 at just about everything.

How does the Grand Cherokee drive off-road?

The fourth-generation WK2 Grand Cherokee was capable off-road. The new WL-gen Grand Cherokee — in Trailhawk trim — is an off-roader. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk can hoist itself up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance and wade through two feet of water. And like the Wrangler Rubicon, you can disconnect the sway bar, which takes the Grand Cherokee to another level.

Jeep didn’t take us on the Hell’s Revenge trail, purportedly due to time constraints. But we did climb the starting portion of a reasonably gnarly mountain trail that required ample articulation, tight maneuvering, frequent spotting from a Jeep Jamboree crew and going onto three wheels on more than one occasion to overcome obstacles. The Grand Cherokee’s hill ascent and descent control works impressively. That said, I eventually resorted to the pedals, as it was too hard to modulate using the shift paddles in a lead-follow situation where I was repeatedly going to full steering lock.

I won’t say the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is the Wrangler’s equal. But almost no Grand Cherokee driver will push their SUV to the extremes where the distinctions between the two would be relevant.

What’s the Grand Cherokee interior like?

Outstanding. Jeep aims for the Grand Cherokee interior — in Summit Reserve trim — to outdo any competitor’s SUV (the goal for the Grand Wagoneer, meanwhile, is to beat any other vehicle). The Grand Cherokee nails that on every level. The design is gorgeous, with impressive craftsmanship and attention to detail. The material quality — Palermo leather and open-pore wood — is unrivaled for the price point.

On the tech front, the UConnect 5 system is quick, intuitive and customizable. It’s gold-standard of proprietary infotainment systems. The Grand Cherokee does not just offer rear-seat screens; the front passenger also gets a screen that can act as a second command center for navigation and controlling the other screens.

And, oh yeah, the Grand Cherokee offers the McIntosh sound system, which may be the best premium audio experience available in an automobile.

How much does a Grand Cherokee cost?

The Grand Cherokee is not cheap, especially if you want to level up. The starting MSRP is $37,390, or $39,390 if you want a 4×4 model. That climbs all the way up to the Summit Reserve at $63,365. Jeep charges a mandatory $1,795 destination charge on top of that. Options can jack the price up even further.

The cheapest Grand Cherokee I drove was the V6 Trailhawk, which started at $51,275 and ended up costing $59,945. I also drove a V6 Summit Reserve that priced out to $67,795 and a V8 Overland that came out to $68,765.

I would guess most buyers end up with the second-tier Limited trim, which starts at $45,710 for the 4×4 version. I wouldn’t be surprised if the three-row L — which Jeep says is already setting monthly sales records without the two-row — becomes the more popular version.

What are some Grand Cherokee alternatives?

Mechatronik M-SL: A Modern Mercedes-Benz W113 Revamp With Classic Good Looks

You’ve all heard it before! German engineering has maintained a reputation as the best in the world. This claim is very difficult to dispute especially with the level of quality their products ship with. It even applies to shops that cater to aftermarket customizations and restorations. We have the Mechatronik M-SL to illustrate exactly how they take care of business.

Arriving in a classic silhouette, this restomod is sure to tug at the nostalgic heartstrings of Mercedes-Benz loyalists. In fact, the shop seems to exclusively dabble in rides — both vintage and modern – from the legendary Three-Pointed Star. For the M-SL, the donor car is the ever-elegant W113, which then undergoes a remarkable revamp.

They work on all projects out of a 6,000-square meter state-of-the-art facility in Pleidelsheim. Their headquarters lies just north of Stuttgart and employs over 40 professionals who know their way around old-school Mercedes-Benz vehicles. This approach allows Mechatronik to preserve the original outline, but cram in the latest technologies.

For the M-SL, clients can choose to personally provide the base machine, or have the company source one for them. Collectors are not likely to part with what’s in their garage so the latter might be the best option. Say goodbye to the stock straight-six as a 1997 4.3-liter Mercedes-Benz M113 V8 engine takes its place.

This gives the roadster a 279-horsepower output capable of a 0-62 mph sprint in 6.5 seconds. Top speed also maxes out at 130 mph. The M-SL then receives a KW Automotive suspension system and bigger brakes to handle the powertrain upgrade. Don’t worry about missing out because Mechatronik is building these to order.

Grado Labs Adds The Reference Series To Its Growing Lineup Of Stylish Headphones

If we showed you a pair of headphones from Grado Labs, those who don’t know the brand might think it’s just another low-end offering. However, audiophiles will recognize the signature design right away. The manufacturer has impeccable timing as the holidays are about to hit. Their recently unveiled Reference series would make excellent stocking stuffers for music lovers.

The new lineup features two models: The RS1x and RS2x. Although both share some similarities, there are also distinct differences buyers might want to consider. For starters, each uses a dynamic transducer with an open-air configuration.

In fact, most high-end brands like Grado Labs use the same setup. Notably, it delivers better sound quality and enhances user comfort. Thus, the Reference series is engineered for longer listening sessions. Nevertheless, here are details of what sets the duo apart.

The RS1x touts a housing crafted out of a combination of a maple sleeve, hemp core, and cocobolo outer ring. Within these are 50-mm X Drivers tuned accordingly to the material. Up next is the RS2x, which flaunts a hemp core with the sleeve and outer ring in maple. Also, the latter packs Grado Labs’ 44-mm X Drivers.

Grado Labs notes that the cables are now more durable than before. Furthermore, the super annealed copper improves acoustic clarity. You then have a black leather headband with white stitching.

If this is your first time listening to this type of design, just don’t be surprised to hear ambient noise mixed with your audio. Grado Labs certainly knows how to make the Reference series appealing for casual listeners and those who demand only the best.

BUYING GUIDE & FAQ’S

It’s clear to see from our paracord bracelet reviews that paracord is an essential item to carry in your backpack when you’re headed for the great outdoors. Here are some important things to know about this survival material.

Is paracord good for survival?

You’ve heard it said a hundred times before that paracord can help you survive an emergency situation. Paracord has a multitude of uses that can help you stay alive.

Here’s a rundown of some of them.

  • You can use paracord as an emergency wound closure. Since its inner strands are small yet strong, they can be used to close a wound. To do this, you have to pull the outer threads away from the casing of the paracord so that you can see the internal strands. Then, pull a few of the strands out, focusing on making them as long as you can. Thread a needle through them so that you leave a long strand of paracord behind. The first suture must be done in the center of the wound. Then, around half a centimeter from the opening of the wound, push the threaded needle into the skin so you can start stitching the wound closed.
  • You can use paracord to make a sling. If you’ve hurt or broken your arm, you can use paracord as an emergency sling solution. You’ll also need a jacket and stick – the jacket will provide comfort while the stick will provide stability. You’ll have to tie a slip knot with the paracord around your wrist, making sure to tie it around the stick and jacket, too. Then, you will need to pull the cord back behind your neck so you can secure it to your elbow. Another piece of cloth should be placed underneath the cord on your neck to prevent chafing.
  • You can use paracord to make a rescue line. If you have to rescue someone from quicksand or fast-moving water, a rescue line made out of paracord can be a lifesaver. To make this, you’ll have to tie a figure-eight knot with the paracord and throw the line to the person needing help.
  • You can restrain someone with paracord. If an intruder is threatening your family, you can use paracord to restrain them. You will have to braid the cord so it’s about an inch in thickness, then create two loops with it that are of the same size so that the cord can become DIY handcuffs. Overlap the loops and thread each one into the other. Place the intruder’s hands into the loops and tighten them around their wrists.
  • You can make a fishing net with a paracord. If you need to catch fish as emergency food for survival, paracord can help you. Cut the length of the paracord to the size you want the fishing net to be. Separate the cord’s inner strands from its outer sheath. Then, place the outer sheath so it’s horizontal and the inner threads are vertical. Attach them to the corners, where the inner threads and sheath connect. Tie the inner strands to the sheath on both sides, making sure they’re about two inches apart. Repeat this for the opposite direction, remembering to make a knot every time another strand is overlapped until you reach the end of the net.
  • You can make a trail marker with paracord. If you’ve become lost in the outdoors, having paracord can help you to mark your trail. Small pieces of paracord can be tied to branches so you can spot them and find your way back to where you need to go.
  • Use paracord to start a fire. Paracord can help you stay warm, boil water, and cook food when you’re out in the wilderness. Once you’ve cut a strip of paracord, you can use the inner strands to start a fire. Gather sticks, logs, and twigs to use as fire fuel, then place the paracord on a flat surface and surround it with the smallest pieces of fuel. You can then use a survival fire starter or lighter to ignite the core strands.

How do paracord bracelets help you survive?

Just like with paracord, a paracord bracelet can also come to your rescue when you need to survive. It can be used in the same way as other paracord, such as by helping you tie up gear, make a splint, hang game to dry out the meat, and so on.

However, you have to first unravel the paracord bracelet. Here’s how.

  • Start by popping off the clasp on one end of the bracelet. If it’s too difficult to remove from the cord with your fingers, you should use a tool such as a knife. It helps to have a paracord bracelet that comes with a knife included in its design, such as the Outdoor Edge bracelet we featured in our reviews.
  • Unravel the bracelet’s threads. You can find paracord bracelets that are five feet in length or others that go all the way up to 12 feet. The more you have, the better!
  • Once your paracord has been unraveled, you can use it for a variety of tasks.

Can paracord hold a person?

In our reviews of paracord bracelets, we’ve seen that many of them can unravel paracord to very long lengths, such as 12 feet. But in an emergency situation, you might wonder if you can use paracord to hold your weight. Here’s what you should know.

Paracord is very strong, so it can hold your weight, but there are some disclaimers to this. You can’t be moving around and you should not weigh more than 500 pounds. If you’re falling or moving around, one strand of paracord won’t be strong enough to hold you and it will break!

This also means that you can’t use paracord for climbing purposes. It’s worth noting that climbing rope is much stronger than paracord, even if it’s of the 550 cord variety.

Can you shower with paracord bracelet?

Generally, paracord bracelets should be fine when wet. But, this is not something to assume across the board, which is why you have to ensure that the paracord bracelet you purchase is water resistant. Some bracelets can be exposed to water, but you can’t submerge them in water on a regular basis.

This is also because there are other materials that are used to make paracord bracelets, and these can become damaged by regular exposure to water.

Note that even if the paracord bracelet can be worn in the shower, it might shrink the first time it’s exposed to water. Don’t worry, this is normal and only happens the first time the paracord gets wet. It will shrink about a quarter of an inch but won’t continue shrinking whenever it makes contact with water.

Conclusion

You can never go wrong with paracord, which is why you should invest in a paracord bracelet.

In this article, we’ve featured the 11 best paracord bracelets for survival. Some have extra items in their design to keep you safe outdoors should the worst-case scenario happen.
