Vaer’s Superb Watches Are Even More Affordable Right Now

Looking for even more great savings? Head over to Today’s Best Deals page to see all our top deals from today.

Finding worthwhile timepieces on a relatively tight budget can be done but it can be somewhat of a task. Rather than digging around bargain bins or diving into the veritable sea of cheap imposters that have flooded the internet, we’d suggest turning to a tried-and-true trustworthy brand like Vaer for your time-telling style accessories. In fact, the brand’s entire catalog of already-budget-friendly timepieces is even more enticing with 20 percent off during the aptly-named Holiday Sale.

Vaer Watches

Vaer vaerwatches.com

If you’re a little wary, don’t be; Vaer is committed to transparency and has put forward some extremely helpful and enlightening information about every watch. That includes, most notably, where it was assembled — which is either the USA or Switzerland — outlined clearly on every landing page. And that’s just one of the many things that make Vaer’s watches superb, alongside the unique juxtaposition of top-notch styling, excellent durability (all Vaer watches are guaranteed waterproof to 10ATM, whether they’re for diving or not), a diverse range of interchangeable straps, and — perhaps most importantly — approachable pricing.

If you want to get a piece of Vaer’s action, you can access the brand’s entire catalog for an extra 20 percent off the retail price with code HOLIDAY20 while the sale is on. Furthermore, the brand has even gone to the trouble of outlining which watches will be delivered by Christmas and which ones will take a little longer to make it onto your (or your loved one’s) wrist.

The New Ford Ranger Could Share One of the Bronco’s Best Traits

It’s safe to say that the launch of the new Ford Ranger has been confusing. Ford sells a global Ranger in Australia, Europe and more than 180 countries worldwide; Ford also offers a nearly identical Ranger in the American market — albeit with different, non-diesel powertrains. Ford launched the global version just before Thanksgiving. But because Ford doesn’t comment on future products, we’re now left to guess which global Ranger features will make it stateside.

Ford

One Global Ranger feature that should transfer over — which we have already seen Ford do in American with the Bronco — is the offer of a smorgasbord of name-brand accessories from the dealer. Ford’s Australian website has just previewed such offerings with inspirational images showing the new Ranger sporting accessories from ARB and other outlets.

Ford shows three categories of inspirational images: Off-Road, Touring and Camping. The Camping category depicts Rangers with a rooftop tent and a cool slide-out camp kitchen in the bed. The Off-Road category shows a Ranger with added underbody protection, a bull bar and a snorkel. Ford should have a similar slate of offerings planned for America, if not those exact ones — Americans may not be as keen on bull bars.

Offering such accessories from the dealer is a great deal for Ford; it lets them profit from accessories buyers would add in the aftermarket anyway. But it also makes accessorizing your truck easier for buyers, by saving them the hassle of buying and installing items from a third party. When you buy accessories from Ford, you can roll them into the cost of the lease or purchase payment. And you have the assurance of knowing that your add-ons will not affect any factory warranties or safety features.

Ford has not set a date yet for the American Ranger’s reveal. A recent Ford Authority article suggested that Ford Ranger production will begin at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in May 2023. That truck may even offer a hybrid model — or a full-electric version.

Polestar Just Served Up a Sneak Peak at Their Most Important Car Yet

A couple years ago, Volvo branched out its Polestar division — formerly known for making awesome blue station wagons — into its own performance car brand. Since then, we’ve seen the Polestar 1, a sleek, plug-in hybrid GT car, and the the Polestar 2, an all-electric fastback sedan. The next car to launch will be the Polestar 3 — one of our most anticipated future electric vehicles. And Polestar just offered up another teaser image of it.

The Polestar 3 will be a “premium electric performance SUV,” according to the brand. Polestar has scheduled the launch for sometime in 2022. It will be the first Polestar vehicle built at Volvo’s plant in South Carolina as part of a pledge to “build in America for Americans.”

Judging from the photo, the Polestar 3 looks like an SUV version of the Polestar 2. Beyond that, we don’t know a whole lot about it.

According to the British website Autocar, the Polestar 3 will be a two-row SUV rather than a three-row. Like the Polestar 2, it will come in both single-motor and dual-motor versions. Autocar says the Polestar 3 will be closely related to the electric Volvo SUV that replaces the XC90. But the Polestar 3 will be more powerful.

The Polestar 3 should be a vitally important car for the Polestar brand. Crossovers are the top-selling vehicles for just about every car brand, and while the Polestar 2 may be a proof of concept, the Polestar 3 will be expected to be a stronger seller. And Polestar is projecting those sales to increase ten-fold by 2025 ahead of an IPO early next year.

Save on the Perfect Portable Fire Pit for Your Backyard or a Giftee’s

Looking for even more great savings? Head over to Today’s Best Deals page to see all our top deals from today.

Though there is a degree of satisfaction in a fire you build piece-by-piece, Solo Stove’s portable fire pits make a backyard burn a lot simpler.

It’s as tall as your forearm and as wide as your computer monitor and as heavy as a beagle, and it saves you time spent clearing a space for a fire, tending to a fire and cleaning up that space the following morning. It also isn’t gaudy, unlike many home fire pits out there, making it perfectly capable to throw down in your backyard. Holes in the base and top of the pit allow air to reach the fire and feed a hotter, more consistent blaze. The higher heat and superior ventilation also cut down on smoke, so you’re less likely to have your neighbors call the cops on you.

Solo Stove Bonfire

Right now, all of Solo Stove’s fire pits and fire stand bundles are on sale for Cyber Week and make a great gift. The Solo Stove Ranger + Stand is the most compact and portable version and a great option for the backyard or camping. And it’s on sale for just $200 — almost 38 percent off its usual price. Of course, if you’d rather go bigger without investing in a stand, you can do that with the Solo Stove Bonfire or Solo Stove Yukon, both discounted by 33 percent. If you’re looking for a camp stove, now is a great time for that, too, because you can now get two for the price of one as part of the sale.

Considering you also get free shipping, picking up a Solo Stove is one of the top deals to snag if you’re looking for a backyard upgrade (or one for a giftee) as we head into winter.

Love Sports? Like Fashion? Keep Up with Both on These Instagram Accounts

Sports are more popular than ever — as such, so are its athletes. They’re becoming bigger than the box score by betting on investing, gaming and, most commonly, fashion. You can follow along with all of the biggest stars — and their mega fits — on a handful Instagram accounts dedicated to documenting their pre-game looks, whether it’s when they arrive in the tunnel (a nickname for the walkway to the locker room) or run out onto the field for warmups.

Most high-profile athletes re-share the images captured by their respective teams’ social media managers, paparazzi snaps from outside the hotels they stay in for away games and professional photos taken during public appearances, at say, backstage with their favorite musician (and new friend), on stage at award shows and such. Following accounts that aggregate the best of these looks into one feed frees up the time you would’ve spent searching for these photos on your own.

Below you’ll find accounts dedicated to basketball, football, baseball, hockey and soccer stars — specifically, the clothing they wear, how they do their hair and the sneakers they collect.

The New Panerai Luminor Marina Quaranta Is Everything You Want In a Watch

Founded by Giovanni Panerai in 1860, Panerai is a beloved Italian watch brand that sold watches to the Italian Navy through the 20th century. It was on the wrists of Italian Naval officers that Panerai proved itself as a reliable and durable watchmaker whose timepieces can handle even the toughest environments. But it wasn’t until the 1990s that the brand saw a resurgence in the U.S. when Sylvester Stallone brought the built-for-mine-sweepers timepieces to the American public when he sported them on his wrist on the silver screen in Daylight.

Like Sly himself, Panerai watches have traditionally been big watches with big personalities, which is what makes the brand’s latest release that much more notable. For 2021, Panerai has brought to market a downsized version of a Panerai legend, the Luminor Marina. This is a release that is sure to delight Panerai’s dedicated fanbase (referred to as Paneristis), as well as watch enthusiasts the world over.

Panerai Luminor Marina Quaranta

man wearing panerai watch

Panerai

The new Panerai Luminor Marina Quaranta is a 40mm version of the legendary watch, revived from Panerai’s portfolio of legacy timepieces. This downsizing (the traditional Luminor Marina is 44mm) is a huge step for a brand that’s known for its beast-sized tool watches. And it works. Big time. Its brushed steel case and polished bezel retain its “large and in charge” feel, but it’s closer to the sweet spot for many watch lovers without Stallone-sized wrists. The Luminor Marina’s dial is also perfectly suited for 40mm, its small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock and date at 3 o’clock leaving plenty of room for a clean, beautiful display.

But before you start to wonder where the compromise is with the Quaranta, don’t. This is the same elegant, refined, highly acclaimed tool watch in a scaled-down package that is sure to appeal to a broad audience.

The watch is powered by the enduring P.900 movement that, at just 4.2mm thin, packs a punch with an automatic winding caliber, three-day power reserve and water resistance of 10 bar.

Overall, it’s a Panerai that’ll look great on anyone, anywhere. At launch, the Luminor Marina Quaranta is available in three silhouettes, a gorgeous black, blue and white.

Ford’s Groundbreaking New Truck Is Sold Out Until Next Year

Ford has launched an array of exciting new vehicles over the past 12 months or so. The company debuted the Mustang Mach E, put the long-awaited Bronco into production, revamped the F-150 Raptor and previewed the all-electric F-150 Lightning. But the most groundbreaking new vehicle — and the one that will have the most impact for those on a budget — is Ford’s new compact pickup, the Maverick.

The Maverick is a cool-looking practical truck, in whichever version you’re looking at. The base model engine is a 2.5-liter hybrid that earns 42 mpg in city driving — and it’s legitimately affordable, with a starting MSRP of $19,995. The Maverick hybrid is a vehicle that can revolutionize an affordable car segment plagued with bland econoboxes. The trouble is…you’re not going to be able to buy one for quite a while.

Ford did not include the hybrid model in the initial Maverick dealer allotments. Message boards found a notice to dealers that Maverick orders won’t be scheduled, and Ford PR’s Mike Levine has confirmed to CarBuzz that the Maverick hybrid is sold out. Ford won’t even reopen ordering on them until next summer. So those who want to order a hybrid Maverick — I was just about ready to count myself among them — may now have to wait nearly another calendar year to bring one home.

The turbo-four-powered gas-only Maverick is currently at Ford dealers, however. It’s not the groundbreaking value that the hybrid model is, but it offers some compelling features the hybrid does not. The uprated combustion engine puts out 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the hybrid, you can fit the combustion model with all-wheel drive and an Fx4 off-road package. You receive an eight-speed automatic, rather than a CVT, and you can upgrade to a 4,000-pound towing capacity. The rub, is the combustion Maverick gets about 20 mpg worse fuel economy than the hybrid in city driving.

Typically, this would be where I would tell you Ford is leaving the door open for a competitor to swoop in. But Hyundai is aiming for a different audience with the Santa Cruz. And there really is nothing like the Maverick hybrid on the market.

The Best Value in New Sport Sedans Isn’t from a Brand You’d Expect

hyundai elantra n front

David Dewhurst Photography

We’re big fans of the new Hyundai Elantra, which came out last year and took home the North American Car of the Year award soon thereafter. For 2022, Hyundai isn’t slacking off; they’re giving us an excellent high-performance N version. Its turbocharged four-cylinder engine packs 276 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque; it has a limited-slip differential; it can even be ordered with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. Think of it as the Veloster N, but less weird-looking.

And also, cheaper. Hyundai has just announced the pricing for the Elantra N: it starts fully-equipped at $32,925 for the manual and $34,425 for the automatic. That makes it one heck of a deal compared to its main rivals.

The Elantra N is more expensive than the Volkswagen Jetta GLI, which now only comes fully loaded for $30,995 — but the Hyundai packs 48 more horsepower. And, of course, the prospective Elantra N is not limited to sedans. It’s an even greater value than the Volkswagen GTI, which can cost into the $40,000 range if you aim to level up to the top trim.

On the flip side, Honda’s new Civic Si is $5,400 cheaper fully-loaded, but the Elantra N is a different animal, offering 76 more hp and 97 more lb-ft of torque. And while pricing has yet to be confirmed, we can expect the Elantra N will cost about the same as the starting price for the new Acura Integra.

The Elantra N is also a great value when you look upmarket. It has 21 more hp than the base model BMW 3 Series, and costs $8,525 less. The Elantra N also offers the manual transmission that the 3 Series does not.

Hyundai says the Elantra N will arrive in winter 2021, which would technically mean sometime between Tuesday, Dec. 21 — less than three weeks away — and the end of the year. We’re looking forward to trying it out.

Cooly: Completely Hands-Free Portable Fan

image

As this pale blue dot in our solar system orbits around the sun, its axial tilt creates the seasons. Depending on where you are — relative to the planet’s Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere — the temperatures may vary. Although it is easier to keep warm even while outside with the help of layered clothing, the opposite is somewhat more difficult. However, with the help of a gadget called Cooly it shouldn’t be a problem anymore.

Without an air conditioner, there are several ways to beat the heat. You can grab a frozen treat, stay in the shade, drink plenty of fluids, and maybe turn on a fan. As indicated by the latter, this is where the Cooly shines. The concept behind it is already familiar to a lot of folks, which makes it easy to use. Moreover, the stuff it does differently makes it an interesting item to have handy.

Back this cool project now: Here

What is the Cooly?

image

To put it simply, this is a portable fan. However, it is one that provides hands-free cooling wherever you go in a clever fashion. In fact, it will perform this function even while you are engaged in other activities. This versatility is what makes the Cooly an awesome accessory for people who hate being drenched in sweat. Warmer seasons or climates are unavoidable, but we now have an intuitive device to make it more bearable.

How does it work?

image

As moisture evaporates, it generates a cooling effect. This is exactly what our body does when we are exposed to temperatures higher than usual. The Cooly helps this process along by directly blowing air across a larger surface area, instead of just our head. As such, you can clip it on your belt or pants with the blower facing upwards.

Secure your shirt to the secondary clip and turn it on. As you can see, this is pretty straightforward. Based on the user’s personal preference, they can position it to the sides, front, or back. A good rule of thumb is to direct the air over a part of your upper body that tends to sweat more than the rest. Physics will then take over and keep you cool until the battery runs out.

Technical Specifications And Design

image

On the subject of portability, the Cooly measures a pocketable 3.03” x 3.97” x 1.41” (W x H x D) and tips the scales at 5.99 ounces. We can’t help but notice the distinct retro aesthetic of its outer shell. You have curves on almost all edges, which gives it a classic streamlined look. You can say that the retrofuturistic theme just works here.

The rear section features the main clip that is color-matched to the outer shell. Meanwhile, the opposite side features a large intake that somewhat resembles a speaker grille. Slightly above it is the smaller secondary clip. Then, right on top is another grille for the blower and an integrated power button just beside it. All of these are in the same shade as the frame.

We have five chromatic options available to choose from. There’s White/Silver, White/Rose Gold, Black/Black, Black/Dark Metal, and Black/Rose Gold. Pick any colorway that suits your tastes since these will easily complement any outfit. Powering the Cooly is a 4,000-mAh battery.

It takes approximately 3 hours to fully charge via its USB-C port but might do so quicker with a fast-charging power adapter. There are three fans speed settings: Level 1 at 16.4 ft/s, Level 2 at 19.7 ft/s, and Level 3 at 24.6 ft/s. It should remain operational anywhere between 2.5 to 6.5 hours according to your usage pattern.

No worries about noise here as it produces a maximum of 76 dB on the highest fan setting. The standard package includes the portable fan, a USB-A to USB-C charging cable, and an accessory the company calls the Wind Cover. This attachment actually redirects the vent downward so you can let your shirt down over the Cooly and not affect its operation.

Back this cool project now: Here

Our Take On The Cooly

image

We think this evaporating cooling device is essential for people who hate sweating when the heat becomes unbearable. It’s discrete enough to wear under your shirt out in public or even in a room with minimal ventilation. We believe that it will definitely come in handy when you least expect it. Therefore, grab a few and keep them charged. Who knows? Maybe everyone else will be so eager to find out how you stay so fresh at all times. Don’t be surprised if you’re suddenly the most popular guy around.

Could VW Be Bringing Its Sexiest Car to America?

The Volkswagen Arteon has a lot to offer. The midsize sedan looks outstanding, is comfortable and spacious, and even excels in the winter, thanks to its available all-wheel drive. And there’s a good bet you’ve never seen one in the wild, because no one buys them. While sales jumped 47% year over year in 2020, the aging Passat still outsold the Arteon six times over.

Why does no one buy the Arteon? Well, paying nearly $50,000 for a VW halo sedan is a tough ask. And VW of America has not given our version any of the cool options Europeans score on the Arteon, like a high-performance R version, VW’s sportier dual-clutch transmission and a shooting brake (er, station wagon) body style.

But there’s some evidence that may change soon. CarBuzz found that Volkswagen filed documents with the USPTO to patent the Arteon shooting brake’s body style here.

Patenting the design is no guarantee that VW will bring the Arteon Shooting Brake to America. Going all-in on the low-selling Arteon by catering to enthusiasts would be an about-face on VW’s U.S. product strategy of late: trimming down the traditional car lineup and focusing on more profitable SUVs as the brand converts to EVs.

And as painful as it may be to admit, manufacturers — like VW, notably — have probably abandoned the road-going wagon segment in the U.S. with good reason — very few people want them. The mythical wagon buyer would exist upmarket, where VW does want to position the Arteon. But paying upmarket prices for a VW would still be a tough sell for non-SUV buyers — unless VW added something crazy like a plug-in hybrid engine into the mix.

Patenting the Arteon shooting brake design (and the grille for the Arteon R sedan) in America does suggest that VW is at least considering fleshing out the Arteon lineup for U.S. buyers. That said, VW responded to CarBuzz with a crisp “no plans for this market,” which indicates those plans — if they ever materialize — may not be imminent.

This Rooftop Tent Is Made for Overlanding Dominance

Here at Gear Patrol, we’re something of evangelists for rooftop tents. Well, rather, we’ve become evangelists, in no small part due to a renewed appreciation for car camping and other forms of Getting Away From It All that became a lifeline to sanity during the sketchiest months of the coronavirus pandemic.

Still, those out there who fancy themselves overlanders might have found themselves wanting something a little sturdier to throw on top of their Land Cruisers — if as much for appearances as for an actual need for a burlier tent.

Well, lucky for those folks, the crew at Colorado-based Roofnest have whipped up something that looks extra-cool atop an off-roader: the new Roofnest Condor Overland rooftop tent.

The 165-lb Condor Overland’s exterior is constructed from aluminum, helping it better withstand whatever impacts wind up thrown at it (hail, pouncing mountain lions, lava bombs). Like many other Roofnest products, it also includes accessory channels on the side that you can use to mount crossbars atop the tent that can handle up to 100 pounds when the tent is closed, and even up to 40 pounds when it’s swung open.

Inside, as you’ll find in other Roofnests, there’s a 2.5-inch thick foam mattress large enough to sleep two adults comfortably (or a third person if you don’t mind spooning). There’s also a skylight that zips open to let in the moonlight, as well as an LED light strip in case it’s not cooperating.

Oh, and in case you weren’t already salivating, here’s something to sweeten the pot: as part of Roofnest’s Cyber Monday Week sales extravaganza, the Condor Overland is $300 cheaper than it’ll be the rest of the time.

‘Black Ivy’: A Clothing Revolution Retold by Style Expert Jason Jules

akharlem 62 001

Art Kane – Black Ivy: A Revolt in Style

Clothing can tell stories, bear hidden meanings and relay silent messages through tightly-packed crowds. It can also kickstart a revolution. Jason Jules’ new book, Black Ivy: A Revolt in Style, due out December 7th, 2021 via Reel Art Press, proves this.

The book details how Black individuals like Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., James Baldwin, Miles Davis and John Coltrane reinterpreted traditionally prep designs like the Oxford button-down shirt, hand-stitched loafer, soft shoulder three-button jacket and repp tie for their own wear — and changed menswear forever by doing so.

Teenie Harris Archive/Carnegie Museum of Art

“Black Ivy style became a thing in and of itself, distinct from Ivy but always related to it,” Jules says. “Ironically, the characterization of Ivy league clothing as quintessentially cool is due in no small part to the enormous, but until now undocumented, influence Black Ivy style has had on mainstream culture —past and present. The old adage, it’s not what you wear it’s how you wear it, is never truer than in the case of Black Ivy style, where the classic Ivy wardrobe was comprehensively raided and then remixed and re-envisioned, away from its elitist confines, away from its mass-market popularity, and into something heavily coded and intentionally revolutionary.”

There’s a thread that connects today’s prep resurgence and the sartorial efforts of these men in the ’50s and ’60s. Prep is cool once more because new designers and brands are removing it from its original context — aka the wretches of global elites (which are predominantly white) — in the same way King Jr., Baldwin and Davis did. But to understand today’s trends, you have to educate yourself on the cast that set the revolution in motion.

Jules, a popular prep model, public relations expert, consultant for brands like Levi’s and Wrangler and seminal style blogger, noticed the new way of dressing early, when he was a child still.

“To me, the understanding of Black Ivy came about organically. As I got older, I began to draw connections between style and its contexts and began to understand how clothes could have meaning, how things can be adopted and redefined to serve a purpose or an agenda,” Jules told The New York Times.

Initially, he surveyed the style from afar. Over the years, as fashion became his primary focus, he returned to Black Ivy Style with renewed interest, as he realized it laid the foundation for how many men dress today.

“Coming from a Black, British working-class background, the Ivy Look couldn’t be further away from my everyday life experience growing up,” Jules explains. “But the more I understood it, the more I gravitated towards it. Black Ivy style is so important. It charts a unique moment in time when the language of Ivy style became an internal part of the Black American story — from the music, the visual arts, the education, the struggle and beyond.”

Jules is sure to call out, though, that Black Ivy Style is not, nor was ever, rooted in the desire to be, or at least dress, white. In fact, its origins are quite the opposite. In the same ways Ivy Style intersected with the Civil Rights Movement, later prep renaissances (today’s included) reared their heads in times of turbulence. Dressing up, it seems, served as a way to endure instability and rebut injustice.

“Rather than a sign of conformity and compliance, Black Ivy was a kind of battledress, a symbolic armor worn in the nonviolent pursuit of fundamental change,” Jules writes.

There’s Never Been a Better Time to Try a Dyson Vacuum

You’re likely already familiar with Dyson — a brand built on its reputation for powerful, reliable cleaning machines, thoughtfully designed. The Cyclone V10 Absolute Vacuum epitomizes what makes Dyson such an industry favorite, wrapped in the brand’s signature streamlined aesthetics. When it comes to raw cleaning power, the Cyclone V10 is powered by (as the name suggests) a Dyson V10 digital motor and 14 cyclones; the end result is a consistent suction that can pull up even microscopic particles like bacteria or pollen. This dirt and debris passes through a whole-machine, fully-sealed filtration system for a truly deep clean anywhere you use it. And we really mean anywhere: With three different cleaning modes, 60 minutes of fade-free usage on a single charge and a variety of different cleaning heads — including the Torque Drive and Soft Roller heads — the Cyclone V10 Absolute Vacuum can flex from carpet to hardwood without skipping a beat. It’s also never been a better time to add a Dyson to your cleaning gear. With $50 off for the holiday shopping season and a bevy of extra tools included at no extra cost, this might be the cleanest purchase you can make this season.

A Japanese Whisky-Inspired Scotch Is One of the Best Things We Drank This Month

Every month, a huge amount of booze moves through the Gear Patrol offices — beer, wine and a whole lot of whiskey. This month: a nostalgic rye whiskey, a perfect post-run beer and more.

Dewar’s Japanese Smooth

Dewar’s

Whiskey drinkers love their Japanese whisky, but their coveted spirit owes a lot to scotch. So it’s pretty funny that a scotch brand, Dewar’s, is making a Japanese-style whisky, and to be honest, it’s pretty damn good (and also a steal at around $20-$25 in most markets). Dewar’s Japanese Smooth is the latest addition to Dewar’s Cask Series, which takes Dewar’s 8-year-old double aged whisky and ages it in select casks. Japanese Smooth sees Dewar’s spending six months in Japanese Mizunara Oak (how the brand managed to score the barrels is beyond me), imparting much of the wood’s flavor to the whisky despite a shorter resting period. In the sub-$20 price range, this makes for an excellent sipper, but it also shines in any scotch-based drink, as well as a Japanese whisky highball. — Tyler Chin, Associate Staff Writer

Komos Tequila Extra Añejo

Komos

I am by no means a tequila expert, but the new Tequila Komos Extra Añejo is pretty much the smoothest I’ve sipped. Sweet, slightly spicy and effervescent. I guess that’s what happens when you age tequila for three years in a combination of French ex-white wine barrels and ex-bourbon barrels. Incidentally, “komos” is Greek for revelry, and this Mediterranean-inspired spirit seems perfect for parties large or small. — Steve Mazzucchi, Editor

George Dickel x Leopold Bros Collaboration Blend Rye

George Dickel

Two exceptional distilleries — George Dickel and Leopold Bros — teamed up to create a rye whisky that recreates a traditional heavy-bodied rye that was popular in America decades ago. The blended rye unites Leopold Bros’ Three Chamber Rye with George Dickel’s column still rye, creating a 100-proof whiskey with a taste and mouthfeel of maple syrup, as well as notes of cocoa and dark fruit. — Tyler Chin, Associate Staff Writer

Aberlour Hot Toddy

Aberlour

It’s hot toddy season, and this cool season, I’m whipping up a bunch to keep colds at bay. I’ve been using Aberlour’s 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch for my hot toddys, which helps to accentuate the baking spices, honey and lemon in the drink. And when the feeling for a hot toddy doesn’t strike, 12 Year Old neat usually hits perfectly. — Tyler Chin, Associate Staff Writer

Finback x Hoka One Soaring High

A Pilsner brewed with strawberry and kiwi doesn’t sound all that appealing at first blush. But the fine folks at Finback know what they’re doing, and they brewed this special post-race Pils with Hoka One in celebration of the Fiftieth NYC Marathon. It ended up being light and bubbly, with the hints of kiwi and strawberry working perfectly in concert. At only 4 percent ABV, this one may be a new post-race favorite for the NYC beer running contingent — hopefully Finback brews some more of it down the road. — Ryan Brower, Commerce Editor

Lord Hobo

Give me a Black IPA and I’m a happy man. Give me a Black IPA that actually tastes like a darkened version of an IPA and I’m an even happier man. Lord Hobo takes its flagship Double IPA Boom Sauce and darkens it. While most Black IPAs go for a balance of IPA and roasted malts, Lord Hobo leans into the IPA hop character and just converts the malt profile to be dark. The result is a 7.8 percent ABV zinger of an IPA that just so happens to have a roasted malt finish. — Ryan Brower, Commerce Editor

Bonbuz

Seedlip

While I can’t speak to its nootropic or adaptogenic properties (I didn’t notice a marked change in my stress or focus levels), Bonbuz added a much-needed puzzle piece to the ritual of crafting cocktails, replacing a traditional alcoholic spirit with a punchy, citrusy, non-alcoholic distillate alternative. While it had a bit of lingering bitterness, which could have been exacerbated by my use of a grapefruit Betty Buzz mixer, the flavors were altogether bright-yet-balanced and had me coming back for more. All told, I’m going to keep drinking it and, at the end of the day, isn’t that what matters most? — Sean Tirman, Commerce Writer

Baker’s Exclusive Selection

Baker’s

As our very own Will Price wrote, “nobody is drinking one of Jim Beam’s best bourbons.” That bourbon being Baker’s. The Jim Beam brand debuted its new Baker’s Exclusive Selection, featuring an extra-aged version of its Kentucky straight bourbon (11 years and 8 months to be exact). The 107-proof bourbon has a fairly heavy mouthfeel that’s both fruity and nutty. If you’ve ever had standard Baker’s before, it’s like that but turned to 11. — Tyler Chin, Associate Staff Writer
