A Secret Alloy Is the Key to This Chronograph Watch’s Stunning Look

Secret ingredients are a mainstay in family recipes and trendy cocktails, but watches?

Over the weekend, I visited the ninth edition of the WatchTime New York watch fair, where I had the pleasure of getting hands-on with a number of rare and extremely special pieces from some of the most prestigious independent watch brands in the world.

Out of all the spectacular watches I handled, one of the pieces that impressed me the most was the new chronograph from the Geneva-based independent brand Czapek. The watch was breathtakingly beautiful in every way, from its case to its movement, but its most stunning feature was its dial.

And that is no coincidence, as Czapek actually utilized a secret alloy to produce this stunning and unique dial.

Czapek

Wait, Who Is Czapek?

Czapek (pronounced cha-pek) isn’t exactly a household name, though it is a legendary name in the Swiss watch industry that was revived in more recent times to become a modern favorite of in-the-know collectors. For the uninitiated, here is a brief rundown of the brand’s history — which does cross paths with a very familiar name in watchmaking.

The original incarnation of the brand was called Patek, Czapek, & Cie. and was founded in 1839 by two Polish immigrants in Switzerland: François Czapek and Antoni Patek (yes, that Patek). The original company lasted just six years before mounting disagreements caused Czapek and Patek to go their separate ways.

This Upgraded Waxed Canvas Jacket Nails Details Others Don’t

Waxed canvas outerwear is having quite the fall. We’ve already seen brands like Patagonia to Flint and Tinder bring the water fighting treatment to different jacket styles than we’re used to. We’ve also seen the granddaddy of waxed canvas, Barbour, launch several new riffs on two of the most iconic waxed canvas jackets ever made, the Beaufort and Bedale.

But the take that’s captured my eye the most so far comes from a somewhat surprising source, Billy Reid.

Contrast Lining For The Win

Billy Reid Hunting Jacket shown laid flat and zipped up on a light tan background.
Billy Reid’s hunting jacket borrows a lot from traditional waxed canvas hunting jackets at first glance. But a few key design details also go a long way to modernizing the jacket’s look and feel.
Billy Reid

The brand isn’t exactly a stranger to waxed canvas and certainly not to outerwear. In fact, the newly released Hunting Jacket was inspired by an “archival” jacket the brand made in 2022

What’s new here revolves around a few key refinements that, taken together, give the classic jacket a more modern, luxurious edge that looks sharp.

First, there’s the light brown colored sleeve lining, which is easily flashed by rolling up the cuff. I’ve rarely thought brown and black made for a good color pairing, but this implementation feels rich and intentional.

Remember the Jack Mason x Dr. Pepper® Collab? It’s Back in a Big Way.

The two brands have annualized their collaboration.

ICYMI, in 2023, Jack Mason and Dr. Pepper® teamed up on a limited-release Strat-o-timer GMT. The collab, born of the brands’ shared Texas roots, struck a chord with fans and sold out quickly.

Jack Mason and Dr. Pepper® are bringing the special Strat-o-timer GMT back with some key updates both to the 2024 edition of the watch and to the partnership itself.

Let’s start with the watch: The dial color is now a frosty, silvery white with a dusty texture (a play on Diet Dr Pepper®) while the date window has moved to the 6 o’clock position. The Strat-o-timer dial text has been replaced with “One of a Kind”, an official slogan of Dr Pepper®. The bezel is again sapphire in the signature colors of the soda brand but the markings have been updated from beige to white for 2024.

The Dr. Pepper® GMT 2024 Edition also marks the beginning of an annual partnership that will see the two brands collaborating for years to come.

From Summit to Street: The Evolution of The North Face’s HMLYN Parka

group of people wearing parkas in photography studioThe North Face

Three decades since its release, TNF’s HMLYN Parka is an outdoor legend and a fashion icon.

When The North Face launched the Himalayan Suit in 1994, the fully-baffled down one-piece was meant to keep high-altitude adventurers protected in the most extreme environments — blizzards, below freezing temperatures, and all. Intriguing in its design and construction, it also happened to catch the attention of the fashion world.

The North Face HMLYN Parka 30th AnniversaryThe North Face

Thirty years of updates and innovations later, The North Face has launched its latest reinvention of the iconic HMLYN Parka with a modern approach that’s tethered to style and culture — all while maintaining its original versatile design and superior warmth. A waxed ripstop outer fabric gives it texture and durability, while the relaxed fit offers comfort for a variety of scenarios.

As the spirit of exploration has trickled from the tops of the world’s tallest mountains to the streets of the world’s most fashionable cities, the parka is as instantly recognizable on Everest as it is in Brooklyn and Paris. Between being an outdoor symbol, a fashion icon, and now an everyday essential, this is its legacy and evolution over three decades.

30 Years of HMLYN Parka: An Interactive Timeline

To celebrate three decades of the HMLYN Parka, we chatted with The North Face’s product team to identify just how this versatile garment has evolved into such an iconic piece. Explore the interactive timeline below to learn more.

A Fan-Favorite Dive Watch Just Received Some Major Improvements

Small Yet Big Changes

When I first saw the press images of Oris’s new diver, I admittedly was underwhelmed. At first glance, this looked to be essentially the same watch as the Divers 65 that it was ostensibly updating.

But then I saw the watch in person, and my tune quickly changed. This is no cursory update; it truly is an entirely different and massively improved watch.

First and foremost, the water resistance has been increased from 100m to 200m. This is pretty essential, as the Divers Sixty-Five’s relatively paltry water resistance was hardly comparable to other dive watches on the market. The Diver’s Date 200-meter rating feels just right.

a hand holding an oris dive watch
No, this isn’t an Oris Divers 65. It’s better.
Photo by Johnny Brayson for Gear Patrol

Next is the bezel. Instead of an aluminum insert like on the Sixty-Five, the Diver’s Date gets a ceramic top ring. This is what you’ll find on modern dive watches from the likes of Rolex and Omega, and the material is quickly becoming expected even on divers in Oris’s entry-level luxury price point. The bezel’s markings have also been redesigned for a cleaner appearance, and its action has been refined and improved.

The new bracelet is my personal favorite part of the watch. It again has a polarizing faux-riveted design similar to what you’ll find on Tudor’s Black Bay divers — you’ll either love it or hate it; I love it. It’s been slightly refined with nicely polished edges on the rivets and an extreme taper that looks and feels like an absolute dream on the wrist.

Jim Beam’s New Bourbon Looks Like a Shocking Seasonal Bargain

We’ve covered plenty of interesting new whiskey releases in 2024 across various styles and price points. But Jim Beam’s newly revealed Winter Reserve looks to be in pole position as the most intriguing affordable release we’ve seen.

I rolled my eyes initially when I scanned the press release. I spied the words “sweet vanilla” and “cinnamon spice”. I presumed this was just a holiday-themed blend of Jim Beam’s competitor to Fireball, Kentucky Fire – a.k.a. “a cinnamon liqueur infused with Kentucky straight bourbon whiskies” and the brand’s similar “Vanilla Bourbon Whiskey.”

A second read changed my tune quickly. This isn’t some whiskey liqueur Frankenstein. Jim Beam Winter Reserve is a legit 6-year-old bourbon bottled at 86 proof, and as such, there’s no added flavoring to bastardize it. Instead, the wintery tasting notes mentioned in the release come from aging in two toasted barrels. Still, neither of those two details is necessarily remarkable on their own until you get to the price – $25 for a 750ml bottle.

A bottle of Jim Beam Winter Reserve sitting on table surrounded by playing cards and various drinkers holding full glasses
I can’t recall seeing a 6 year old toasted bourbon priced at $25 before.
Jim Beam

Yes, that’s roughly double the price of Jim Beam’s classic white label – which is one of the main reasons the bottle is the world’s best-selling bourbon by a factor of more than five. But this is also a different animal.

I don’t have the memory or the time to review whether this is the cheapest toasted bourbon out there right now, but I know enough about the market to guess it’s very much in the running. The closest bottling that jumped to my mind is Basil Hayden’s “Toasted Barrel” Kentucky Bourbon, which was released a few years back and seems to hover close to $40 at many online retailers. It also lacks an age statement. And as it happens, Basil Hayden is also owned by Jim Beam.

This isn’t some whiskey liqueur Frankenstein. Jim Beam Winter Reserve is a legit 6-year-old bourbon bottled at 86 proof, and as such, there’s no added flavoring to bastardize it.

Here’s what you’ll get with an Adobe Creative Cloud Subscription

Adobe creative cloud gifAdobe

20+ essential apps

Perhaps the most obvious draw of Creative Cloud is the sheer volume and variety of apps it includes.

Photographer? Use Lightroom to edit, organize and share your shots, and Photoshop to combine, remix, and retouch them. Need to create, edit, and electronically sign PDFs? Acrobat has you covered. Want a little bit of everything with an assist from AI? The premium version of Adobe Express, an all-in-one, AI-powered content creation app, is also included.

To name a few, there’s Adobe’s library of 20,000+ fonts at your fingertips; Adobe Stock, which includes more than a million free photos, drawings, video clips, and more; and the Adobe Tutorial Library, which is filled with lessons on the basics and beyond; and you’ll receive 1,000 generative credits to cover your AI needs in Firefly.

Creative Cloud also includes tools for teamwork and collaboration, like shareable asset libraries and Adobe Portfolio, which enables you to create and share your work on a professional website with ease. Last but certainly not least, a subscription comes with 100GB of cloud storage to make hosting your work as seamless as the process of creating it with Creative Cloud.

All at a reasonable monthly cost

The best part? An Adobe Creative Cloud subscription costs just $59.99 per month — less than the cost of three individual apps (typically priced at $22.99 each). For students and teachers, Adobe offers Creative Cloud subscriptions starting at just $19.99 per month. So, what are you waiting for? One of This Century’s Most Important Watches Just Got a Killer Revamp

Someone recently asked me what watch I considered to be the most important of the 21st century. While I’m not fully committed to one answer, the first watch that popped into my head was the Ulysse Nardin Freak.

First arriving in 2001, the original Freak lived up to its name with a wild design matched only by its unorthodox function. The watch featured no traditional hands, dial or crown. Instead, the movement itself told the time, with its flying carrousel acting as the minute hand and a rotating disc on the movement marking the hours. In place of a crown, the watch’s bezel was used to adjust the “hands,” while turning the caseback wound the watch.

As unique and revolutionary as the Freak’s appearance was, it was the watch’s inner workings that really left a lasting legacy. The original Freak was the first watch in history to use silicon parts in its escapement. The futuristic material is lightweight and hard, requires no lubrication, and is unaffected by temperature and magnetism.

Ulysse Nardin’s use of silicon in the escapement of the original Freak started a watchmaking revolution.
Ulysse Nardin

Silicon’s unique set of attributes make it ideal for use in fragile, easily upset mechanical movements, and the Freak showed that it was possible to use the material in a watch with the right technological knowhow. Since UN paved the way, silicon has become the gold standard for high-end watch escapements.

Omega uses silicon hairsprings and balance wheels in its Master Chronometer movements. Zenith uses a full silicon escapement in the modern iterations of its iconic El Primero movement. Rolex and Patek Philippe both now use proprietary silicon materials for their balance springs: “Syloxi” for Rolex and “Spiromax” for Patek. You get the picture.

Converse Takes the All Star Sneaker to a Place It’s Never Been Before

Say “howdy” to one wild, wild take on the classic All Star.

What does the Chuck Taylor All Star have in common with a pair of cowboy boots? At first glance, not much. Yet, you could make the case that both American classics span decades and demographics.

Since the early 1900s, All Stars have made their way onto the feet of everyone from Wilt Chamberlain to Kurt Cobain. As for cowboy boots? Well, they’ve been around a longer than that and continue to find new fans today.

If the through line still seems like a stretch, how’s this? All Stars and cowboy boots both shaped one of Converse’s wildest designs ever: the All Star Western Boots ST Z.

Converse All Star Western Boots ST Z

The upcoming Converse is exactly what it sounds like — the classic Chuck Taylor All Star turned into a cowboy boot.

With a full-length upper, it gives new meaning to the concept of a “high top.” Exclusive to Japan at launch, it comes in two finishes, brown or black suede.

This isn’t the first time Converse has toyed with the All Star. It’s not even the first Western-inspired version.

However, the All Star Western Boots II Z Hi from yesteryear were more sneaker than boot. They also lacked some of the traditional detailing that make the new All Star Western Boots ST Z rodeo-ready, including Western-style stitching and pull tabs, here embossed with the Converse logo.

An embossed Converse logo accompanies the boot’s pull tabs.

That all said, the new boot should feel like a Chuck Taylor All Star underfoot, considering it comes with the shoe’s iconic rubber sole (sans heel, of course).

Pricing and availability

The All Star Western Boots ST Z will release later this month at Converse Japan for the price of ¥20,900 — about $140. For the novelty alone, let’s hope it one day it makes the tip out west.

Using Fintech Innovations to Improve Your Credit Score and Borrowing Power

Fintech innovations are reshaping how individuals manage their credit scores and borrowing capabilities. With cutting-edge technology and data-driven solutions available today, financial technology is crucial in enhancing personal finance.

These advancements make it easier for consumers to navigate their financial health and access better borrowing terms. Learn more about how fintech innovations revolutionize credit management and empower individuals to optimize their financial standing.

Understanding Your Credit Score

Your credit score is a crucial determinant in your financial life, affecting everything from loan approvals to credit card interest rates. Fintech innovations have greatly simplified the process of understanding and monitoring this vital number. Modern apps and platforms provide users with easy access to their credit scores and detailed reports, highlighting areas for improvement.

These tools offer numerical scores, contextual insights into factors influencing your credit, and actionable steps to enhance it. For instance, they can identify discrepancies in your credit report and offer advice on addressing them. By utilizing these tools, you can take proactive steps to correct errors, reduce outstanding debt, and ultimately boost your credit score.

Automated Savings and Budgeting Tools

Effective financial management is closely linked to maintaining a strong credit score, and fintech innovations in automated savings and budgeting are making this more accessible than ever. Advanced budgeting solutions give users detailed analyses of their spending habits and tailored budgeting advice.

Automated savings tools analyze spending patterns to automatically transfer small amounts into savings accounts, helping build an emergency fund with minimal manual effort. This approach supports consistent saving while preventing missed payments and creates a more substantial credit history. Integrating these tools into your financial routine can enhance your ability to manage expenses and maintain a positive credit profile.

Credit Monitoring and Fraud Protection

Identity theft and financial fraud are increasingly prevalent today. In 2023, the FTC received over one million identity theft complaints and more than 2.6 million fraud-related complaints, surpassing $10 billion in total financial losses.

Fintech innovations have become essential for protecting your credit and personal information. Credit monitoring services offer real-time alerts about changes or suspicious activities in your credit report. These services use sophisticated algorithms to detect unusual patterns and potential fraud, giving users a critical advantage in safeguarding their financial identity.

Many of these platforms provide identity theft protection and resolution services, assisting in recovering from fraudulent incidents and restoring your credit. By staying vigilant with these fintech tools, you can mitigate the risk of credit damage and maintain a secure financial profile.

Credit Building and Alternative Credit Scoring

Traditional credit scoring models may not fully capture an individual’s financial behavior, particularly those with limited credit histories. Fintech innovations have introduced alternative credit scoring methods that use a broader range of financial data to assess creditworthiness.

According to a study on machine learning and non-traditional data effects on credit scoring published in the Journal of Financial Stability, New fintech credit scoring models differ from traditional ones in two main aspects.

First, new fintech credit scoring models use more extensive data than traditional ones, incorporating alternative sources like social media activity and digital footprints. Large tech companies also leverage data from transactions, orders, and customer reviews. The second key difference is machine learning, which can analyze non-linear data more effectively than traditional models.

These alternative models allow users to include non-traditional data, such as utility payments and rent history, in their credit reports, potentially enhancing their credit scores. This approach will enable individuals with limited or no credit history to demonstrate their financial reliability and access better borrowing options. By utilizing these innovations, users can build their credit profiles more effectively and improve their overall creditworthiness.

Smart Loan Management and Refinancing

The process of managing and refinancing loans has been revolutionized by fintech innovations, offering users streamlined solutions for better financial management. Advanced platforms facilitate the application process for various types of loans and use algorithms to provide personalized loan terms based on your credit profile. For instance, platforms like CreditFresh provide users with flexible borrowing options and a transparent borrowing process, making finding suitable loans easier and managing repayments.

Additionally, fintech tools assist users in tracking loan repayment progress and provide strategies for accelerating debt repayment. By consolidating loans or refinancing at lower interest rates, borrowers can reduce their financial burden and improve their credit health. These tools simplify loan management and help optimize repayment strategies, enhancing borrowing power and financial stability.

Education and Financial Literacy

Fintech innovations have also made significant strides in promoting financial literacy and education. Numerous platforms offer many resources, including educational articles, interactive tools, and financial calculators, which guide users through complex financial decisions. These resources help individuals understand credit management, borrowing strategies, and personal finance principles in a user-friendly format.

By engaging with these educational tools, users can gain valuable insights into managing their credit scores and making informed financial decisions. Enhanced financial literacy empowers users to navigate their finances more effectively, leading to better credit health and improved borrowing capabilities.

Conclusion

Fintech innovations have transformed personal finance management, offering powerful tools to improve credit scores and borrowing power. These technological advancements provide invaluable support for optimizing financial health, from real-time credit monitoring and automated savings to alternative credit scoring and smart loan management.

By leveraging these fintech solutions and staying informed about your credit and financial habits, you can enhance your credit profile, access better borrowing terms, and achieve greater financial stability. As fintech continues to evolve, staying abreast of these innovations will be vital to maximizing your financial potential.

One of the Best Affordable Timex Watches in Years Just Got Better

Tiffany Who?

Timex’s new Marlin Jet houses a different movement compared to the original iteration. (Though, as is often the case with the brand, Timex isn’t offering up specifics on the calibre used.)

Now, instead of featuring a 24-hour counter at 9 o’clock, the watch has a date window at 3. This, to me, is a big improvement. Not only is a date complication a lot more useful than a 24-hour counter that’s tied to the main timekeeping (i.e., you can’t use it to track a second time zone), but it’s also a lot less intrusive and takes up less space on the dial.

timex watch with a light blue dial
Timex may be late to the Tiffany Blue trend, but this watch is still gorgeous.
Timex

That last bit is especially helpful with one of the two new dial colors available, as Timex has launched a robin-egg blue version of the Marlin Jet Automatic.

Although the gorgeous new dial color is arriving a few years after the Tiffany Blue trend peaked in the watch industry, the color remains as gorgeous as ever even if it’s no longer the hottest thing around.

The other new dial color is also attractive but far less eye-catching. It’s a sort of smoky-tan color that Timex refers to as “Wheat,” and it offers plenty of retro vibes to go along with the rest of the watch’s mid-century design.

This New GMT Tool Watch Has a Surprisingly Sophisticated Detail

Pricing and Availability

With its mix of typical Fortis tool-watch toughness and ingenuity with the surprisingly luxurious addition of white gold on the dial, the new Fortis Vagabond is one of the more intriguing GMT watches to come out in recent memory.

I like practically everything about this watch, but if there’s one area where it can improve, it’s the price. Listed at $6,800, the Vagabond is now easily the priciest watch in Fortis’s permanent catalog.

On the one hand, you can justify the price due to the high-end materials used and the fact that it’s using a manufacture movement. On the other hand, there are still arguably better buys out there.

fortis watch case
The Vagabond’s case features some comples finishing, particularly for being made of Grade 5 titanium.
Fortis

The Longines Spirit Zulu Time in Grade 5 titanium has an exclusive true GMT movement and costs just $4,275 on a bracelet — more than $2,500 less than the Fortis. If you want a touch and gold, a steel-and-gold Zulu Time will set you back just $4,550.

Other watches using the same movement as the Vagabond are also priced for less. Most notably, Tudor’s Black Bay GMT is $4,375 in steel and $6,125 in steel and gold, which includes a two-tone bracelet and a lot more gold than the Fortis.

CRKT Shrinks The CEO Knife Into The 3-Inch Long Microflipper

CRKT took its popular CEO knife design and made the CEO Microflipper, an even smaller version offering superior portability. But it boasts the same robust build and lightweight strength as the OG.

This new version measures an overall length of 5.50″ and a mere 3.25″ when closed. It weighs 1.70 oz. (48.19 g) and packs a reliable and sharp 12C27 stainless steel blade for excellent edge retention. The blade is plain edge with a satin finish and measures 2.21″ long and 0.09″ thick.

The CRKT CEO Microflipper operates smoothly with a blade deployment reliant on an IKBS ball-bearing pivot system. The flipper deploys the blade fast and locks in place for safety via a liner lock which can be closed with one hand. Meanwhile, the lightweight aluminum and strong handle complements the razor-sharp steel blade. Together, they make this flipper a great EDC for small tasks both domestic and outdoors.

This folder comes in two versions: a drop-point blade with textured silver aluminum handle and blue liner and a sheepsfoot blade with blue aluminum handle and silver liner.  It may be the smallest and lightest version of the famed CEO folder. But it seamlessly combines refined style and ultimate convenience and competitive strength that makes it a “serious contender for any job.”

Plus, the CRKT CEO Microflipper boasts a sleek silhouette easily disguisable as a pen when tucked by its pocket clip. It may have an unassuming profile but it doesn’t cut corners in functionality and quality. It’s the perfect everyday carry with its smooth blade opening and ergonomic handle.

We’ve Never Seen a Pocket Knife Open Like This

Mark Twain once said: “There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible.” While many would-be inventors, designers, writers or creatives in any genre may bristle at the notion, if you can accept that your one-of-a-kind idea is simply a new iteration of something that already exists, you can find endless inspiration in the every day, the mundane and the ordinary.

In the case of Craighill’s knife, it was one specific Southwestern reptile that provided all the inspiration needed for its latest release. Meet the Sidewinder: a sculpture masquerading as a knife, with an innovative opening mechanism that mimics the smooth motion of a snake slithering over the sand, coiling and twisting with grace and ease.

The Sidewinder Strikes

craighill sidewinder
The Sidewinder’s blade is sharp, but it’s the design that catches the eye.
Craighill

While many knives hang their hats on durability, functionality and brawn, the Sidewinder takes a different approach. Built for connoisseurs of everyday carry and with a focus on beauty, Craighill’s collaboration with design duo Chen Chen and Kai Williams speaks to the collectors of the EDC world. It was crafted as an homage to the beauty of the captivating tracks left by its namesake, and features an opening mechanism that hinges on ingenuity, disrupting what a traditional pocket knife looks like.

The Sidewinder’s unique design relies on two interlocking pieces of stainless steel, one stone-washed and the other black PVD-coated, held together by an interlocking mechanical hilt. The two pieces hinge away from and then rejoin one another in a dance that mimics the unhurried and elegant movements of a snake. At 5.6 ounces, the Sidewinder has enough heft to be noticed in the hand and pocket, but it won’t weigh you down if you decide to take it into the real world, rather than relegating it to desk decor. The 2.5 inch, drop-point blade has a deep belly and a fine tip, ideal for slicing and cutting everyday items.

Internally, like most purifiers, the Windmill packs in a pre-filter for capturing hair and dust, an activated carbon filter for odors and VOCs, and finally, a True HEPA filter to block 99.97% of airborne pollutants.

In addition to good looks and layers of filtration, the Windmill Air Purifier offers a bevy of running modes and smart features, similar to other more advanced machines on the market. Users can choose between three fan speeds, boost and eco modes. They can also use an app to see room air quality, check in on the filter’s lifespan, turn button beeps off or on, and even schedule certain modes to kick on or off, which seems particularly useful for sleeping.

There are two sleep modes on the machine. Whisper lowers noise output to just 16 dB, while white noise ramps things up to a random noise-drowning hum of 47 dBs, which is supposedly research-backed for better sleep. Unlike many other purifiers, which ask you to choose between keeping the device’s LED button lights lit, off, or covered, Windmill’s unit offers an auto fading mode that’ll turn lights off after 3 seconds. You can, of course, adjust the setting to keep them on or totally off.

But is it worth the price?

he Windmill Air Purifier looks like a well-rounded package with outstanding aesthetic details. But at $459, it’s also very expensive for what it is.

Adidas’s Ultraboost running shoe line has become one of the most popular athletic sneakers in the world since its launch in 2015. The latest addition to the family, the Ultraboost 5, was unveiled in July just a few months ago, and predictably took over the internet for several days. Now, just a few months after being announced, Adidas is already selling select versions of the flagship sneaker for 25% in a variety of great looking colors.

The Difference Between “Caged” and “Uncaged”

A rendering of an Adidas Ultraboost 5 sneaker in white with a pink and yellow hued outside. The empty shoe is positioned as if someone were stepping in it, with the toe region touching the ground creating a bit of golden light.
The raised plastic portion that includes Adidas’s iconic three stripes logo is referred to as a cage in shoe parlance.
Adidas

Traditionally, Adidas has offered both “caged” and “uncaged” versions of the Ultraboost silhouette to accommodate various runner fit preferences.

For anyone who doesn’t speak running shoes, the term cage refers to the TPU lacing system that partially shrouds the upper of baseline versions of the Ultraboost. Some runners like having this cage feature to lock in a tighter fit. Others hate the weight the feature adds and the pressure it can apply to their feet, preferring the “freer” feel of the uncaged version.

Experts Already Love the Uncaged Ultraboost 5X

Plenty of running experts and fans have praised the Ultraboost 5X already in reviews. Runner’s World likes the shoe for its “light weight and smooth ride.” Robbe Reddinger at Believe In the Run also appreciated its versatility as a running and lifestyle shoe, saying, “In that category, it’s probably one of the best shoes you can buy, quiet possibly the best.Run Repeat echoed Reddinger’s sentiments, concluding, “Adidas has crafted a versatile shoe that does a great job in everyday wear and daily runs alike.

A Bunch of Great EDC Pocket Knives Are Still Super Cheap, Even Post-Prime Day

Here are some of our favorite deals — up to 50% off — from CRKT, Spyderco, Kershaw, Gerber and more.

crkt m40-02 pocket knife macroCRKT

Every product is carefully selected by our editors. If you buy from a link, we may earn a commission. Learn more

Fall is a time for tailgates and campfires, pumpkin carving and pumpkin pie eating — all experiences that can be enhanced by the presence of a trusty blade.

Even though Prime Day is now behind us, you can still score such a blade (or bladeless multi-tool) at a discount via Amazon.

These aren’t Panaphonics, Magnetbox and Sorny type knives either. Yes, there are plenty of knockoffs for the taking, but there are also a number of knives from respected brands that are well worth full price — and simply twice as sweet when they are up to half off.

spyderco tenacious pocket knifeSpyderco

Spyderco Tenacious

This mid-sized folder boasts a 3.39-inch 8Cr13MoV stainless blade, ergonomic fiberglass handle, trademark Spyderco hole for easy deployment and a four-way pocket clip to carry any way you want.

kershaw leek pocket knifeKershaw

Kershaw Leek

With a 3-inch modified drop-point Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel blade, SpeedSafe Assisted Opening and anodized aluminum handle, this ambidextrous flipper handles detail work and daily cutting tasks equally well.

Gerber 06 FAST pocket knifeGerber Gear

Gerber Gear 06 FAST

FAST is short for “forward action spring technology,” meaning this knife’s 3.75-inch stainless steel serrated tanto blade deploys in a flash. It’s optimized for piercing, picking, cutting and ripping, making it an ideal backcountry EDC tool.

civivi mini praxis pocket knifeCivivi

Civivi Mini Praxis

Proving smaller can be better, one of Civivi’s most practical and popular pocket knives boasts a 2.98-inch black stonewash D2 steel blade deployed via a lively flipper, grippy G10 handle and pocket clip for easy carry.

crkt m40-02CRKT

CRKT M40-02

Designed by Kit Carson, this underrated flipper boasts a stainless steel tanto blade, glass-reinforced nylon and aluminum bolster handle and swift deployment eased by an IKBS ball bearing pivot system, held in place with a Deadbolt lock and returned home with the touch of a button.

leatherman-style-psLeatherman

Leatherman Style PS

This keychain-sized multi-tool eschews blades in favor of TSA compliance while still offering plenty of handy functions including spring action pliers, a file, scissors, bottle opener and mini-screwdriver — and hey you can still probably extract a slice of pumpkin pie with the file.
