BMW’s Upcoming Adventure Bike Taps Into Motorcycling’s Hottest Trend

Another big shift I don’t love, aesthetically, is dropping the silencer down next to the rear wheel.

Naturally the production bike will have key elements the concept lacks, such as lights and pillion pegs.
BMW Motorcycles

It’s understandable given the need to accommodate passenger pegs and saddlebags but damn, the Concept’s high-riding Akrapovič exhaust pipe looked hot.

Other notable tweaks include a reshaped windscreen and tank shrouds, more refined rear bodywork and possibly pannier mounts.

Numbers game

Rumor has it BMW will officially announce the production F 450 GS (including specs and pricing) this fall, quite possibly at EICMA.

Till then, deep details remain under wraps, though a number of key elements appear to mirror the Concept.

Luminox Gives Its Most Stylish Diver a Rugged, Stealthy Makeover

Instead of stainless steel, these watches now come with Luminox’s signature Carbonox — a high-performance carbon composite that’s both extremely tough, highly durable and lightweight.

It’s also non-magnetic, as it’s not metal-based (although the case backs are still stainless steel), and it extends to the rotating dive timer bezel, as well.

As mentioned, the straps are also black. Similarly, they’ve been swapped from steel link bands to black rubber ones, which mesh better with the sporty styling of the Carbonox cases.

Instead of steel cases, these watches get the brand’s signature Carbonox material.

A splash of color

While the color and material changes are obviously big ones, many aspects of these watches remain unchanged, aligning with their siblings. Probably the most obvious is the dials.

While the rest of the watches are blacked out, the dials maintain pops of color, available in red, blue and green. Similarly, the hands and hours have another signature Luminox feature: vibrant, colorful lume (which lasts for up to 25 years).

This Sleek Restomod Elevates Porsche’s Once-Overlooked 911 Alternative

Nowadays, the Porsche 911 is virtually universal in its appeal. However, that wasn’t always the case.

In fact, when Porsche first introduced the model as a replacement for its aging 356, it was so concerned about turning away customers because of the price tag that it cooked up a more affordable alternative powered by a 1.6-liter flat-four.

It’s called the 912, and though it went largely overlooked for many years — even among the Porsche crowd — it’s now finally getting the attention it deserves thanks to restomods like this sleek example from Kamm Manufaktur.

a photo of two classic porsche 912 restoration cars on a coastal overlook
Whether you want your Porsche as a Targa or as a hardtop, Kamm Manufaktur will work with you to build the perfect 912T.
Kamm Manufaktur

One for the road

Now, this isn’t Kamm’s first rodeo. The Hungarian outfit specializes in restomodding the 912, and it has previously transformed the classic Porsche into a modern performance car à la Singer by way of upgrades such as carbon fiber body panels and extra horsepower under the hood.

However, the latest release — the 912T — is one that prioritizes long-distance enjoyment over all-out performance. Or, as Kamm puts it, “timeless touring with spirit.”

The Affordable ‘Other Moonwatch’ Just Became Even More of an EDC Darling

The Omega Speedmaster may have been the first watch to be worn on the moon, but it wasn’t the only one.

A Speedmaster-esque Bulova prototype chronograph was also worn on the lunar surface by astronaut Dave Scott during the Apollo 15 mission in 1971, and it remains the only confirmed non-Speedy worn on a celestial body. The watch remained largely a footnote until Scott’s watch sold at auction in 2015 and Bulova began selling a modern recreation called the Lunar Pilot that same year.

Over the past decade, the Bulova Lunar Pilot has become a signature model for Bulova, which has continued to release versions of its space watch in new sizes, colors and materials.

The latest is one of the most intriguing yet, as it utilizes a material most often seen in the EDC knife community.

Bulova

On the Road to Timascus

To celebrate its 150th anniversary this year, Bulova turned to Brazilian artist Thiago Rosinhole for help in designing a special-edition Lunar Pilot. Even if you don’t know Rosinhole’s name, you’ve probably seen his work: He’s the creator of Budii Toys, those pop art-infused sculptures that resemble a mouse in a space suit.

For the new Lunar Pilot, Rosinhole didn’t turn to space mice (OK, there is one embossed on the caseback), but rather to a design element that’s equally out of this world. The watch features a dial made of timascus, a material which has long been popular in pocket knives but has only recently begun to gain traction in the watch space.

A Japanese Hi-Fi Great Just Launched Its Most Advanced Soundbar Yet

Today, Yamaha continues to be one of the biggest brands in home audio. It’s best known for a wide array of multi-channel AV receivers, designed for serious home theater enthusiasts, but it’s also a prominent player in home hi-fi components, speakers and home theater packages.

The storied Japanese audio manufacturer has been in the soundbar business for over 20 years, too, having released its first model, the YSP-1, back in 2005. And now, the company has unveiled what it is calling its “most advanced” soundbar yet.

Meet the True X Surround 90A.

19 drivers, 12 up-firing

The Yamaha True X Surround 90A isn’t a standalone soundbar. It’s a complete surround sound package that supports Dolby Atmos, comprised of a soundbar, wireless subwoofer and two wireless surround (or rear-channel) speakers.

Of these components, the soundbar stands out because it’s an absolute beast. It features 19 total drivers, 12 of which are up-firing drivers — six located on each side of the soundbar — specially designed for height channels so that it can deliver an unbelievably immersive Dolby Atmos experience.

This Bold Brand’s Underrated Sports Watch Borrows a Standout Feature from Its Tool Watches

The BR-05 Sincere White Lum is mostly your standard BR-05 stainless steel. It has the same integrated tapering bracelet, the same 40mm square case with 100m of water resistance and the same Sellita SW300-based automatic movement inside.

Where the watch differentiates itself is on the dial, where there are a few interesting things going on.

a bell and ross watch
The attractive red-on-white color scheme isn’t employed often enough in the watch industry.
Bell & Ross

First, and most obviously, is the color. The dial itself is white while everything on it — the hands, indices and all text, including the date — are brick red. White and red is a color combination that isn’t seen often enough in the watch world — I’ve always been partial to Farer’s Bernina Chronograph — and it looks dynamite here. The colors were chosen to represent Singapore’s flag, which is, you guessed it, red and white.

The date window here has also been tweaked. On the standard BR-05 Auto, the date is a standard rectangular window that replaces the index at 3:00. Here, it’s been moved to a diminutive circular cutout at 4:30. Say what you want about 4:30 date windows, but I like this move. It’s pretty unobtrusive and allows for the addition of a big ol’ Arabic “3” index in that sweet Bell & Ross font.

Lastly, and most significantly, is the lume on the dial. You’ve probably noticed that, while there is lume on the hands, there isn’t any on the indices. That’s because the entire dial is lumed with blue-emission Grade X2 Super-LumiNova, the brightest, longest-lasting lume made by the Swiss illumination giant.

This Vintage-Inspired Camera Recaptures the Magic of Shooting Film in the 1970s

Camp Snap is a California-based company known for its affordable, screen-less digital cameras, inspired by the cameras of the past.

This week, it unveiled its take on the digital camcorder, the CS-8, which is actually the brand’s first digital camera capable of capturing video. It’s simple, budget-friendly, and designed to resemble the Super 8 film cameras from the 1970s.

Camp Snap CS-8 Digital Video Recorder

Camp Snap CS-8
The Camp Snap CS-8 resembles a 35mm film camera from decades past. But opts for a modern-day SD card instead.
Camp Snap

Video only, no photos

Camp Snap’s CS-8 looks every bit the part of an old-school Super 8 film camera, but it replaces the film with a modern SD card. It also features a rechargeable battery (via USB-C), adding another modern convenience.

That said, the CS-8 is designed to be even easier to use than today’s digital cameras, as well as the film cameras of yesteryear. There are no swappable lenses or adjustable settings for exposure or aperture. You can’t adjust the frame rates. And it doesn’t take photos.

Vero Engineering’s Most Affordable EDC Knife Still Won a Major Blade Show Award

While not all of the Avid 1’s six configurations come in under that $200 price point, the most affordable ones are well under, clocking in at $185. These ones boast S45VN steel drop point blades, G-10 handle scales and titanium liners (including the lock spring).

While the blade steel remains the same in the other, more high-end versions, the handle sees some alternative materials. There are ones with marbled carbon fiber, titanium and even a jade option (the last of which is still under $200).

While the handle materials vary, the specs and other features remain consistent.
Vero Engineering

Right to the point

Beyond the handle scales and blade steel, there’s still plenty of other things to love about this relatively approachable pocket folder. And that’s what you want out of an EDC tool that’s, as the brand puts it, “built for reliability and everyday performance.”

The Avid 1 measures 7.70 inches in length with a 3.25-inch blade — hitting right in the sweet spot for everyday carry sizing. When closed, it measures 4.25 inches, stout enough to fit into most pockets without being so short that the grip is awkward.

This Purpose-Built Dive Watch Boasts a Rare Feature That Used to Be Everywhere

The beveled baton hour markers with alternating lume tips, the double-lume dot seconds hand and the red-on-white hour wheel are all spot on. Sherpa even stuck to the 40mm steel case size with the block crown guard covering both crowns, which are faithfully engraved with a hash pattern.

The Sherpa Ultradive has a 40mm case.
Sherpa

The internal bidirectional rotating dive bezel, another EPSA invention, is operated by the crown at two o’clock. As part of the EPSA case design, the Monoflex crowns retain water resistance without being screwed down.

The Ultradive runs on a heavily customized top-grade Sellita caliber SW200-1 automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve called the Mantramatic MM01. Its name comes from the Tibetan Buddhist mantras laser-engraved on two movement wheels.

The double-lume dot seconds hand is a signature detail from the Enicar Sherpa Ultradive.
Sherpa

Sherpa’s authentic super compressor dive watch is more of a love letter than a ripoff. Since Enicar went bankrupt in 1987, Sherpa is doing its best to keep the brand’s good name alive.

I appreciate that Kloche cites all of his sources on the Sherpa website, offering in-depth details on the history and engineering of the super compressor. He isn’t attempting to pass off his brand as a direct revival of Enicar but more of an ode.

The “World’s First Glampervan” Is Less Camper and More Luxury Yacht

This rendering of the wardrobe area showcases ample storage space for decidedly un-outdoorsy apparel.
Robeta Mobil

That’s admittedly the least luxe laundry option this side of a washboard, but it’s quite compact and a pretty rare feature for camper vans and small RVs.

The kitchen area, meanwhile, is quite nicely appointed. Highlights include a generous Corian countertop, dual-burner Bora Classic gas stove, gas oven/grill and 130-liter fridge/freezer.

Robeta also flouts tradition when it comes to the bathroom itself. Nestled into the rear passenger side corner, it has an open design with a privacy curtain rather than a door.

robeta ananya bathroom
This conceptual sketch of the bathroom area can’t hide the fact it is pretty barebones.

Tight as the space is, it also manages to squeeze in a sink, shower and marine macerating toilet.

If you’ve bought into the overall concept, the bathroom might be the most controversial element, as it is rather spartan compared to everything else.

This Polar Diver Is Staking Its Claim As the Year’s Best-Looking Dive Watch

Last year, Bremont unveiled the Supermarine 500m. Boasting a fully ceramic case and a helium escape valve, among other premium features, the watch was a robust beast of a tool watch while also being quite the looker.

Then, in April of this year, Bremont launched a version of the watch in 904L stainless steel with a black ceramic bezel and a matching black 3D wave-patterned dial. The watch boasted most of the same specs as the full-ceramic version, but thanks to the more affordable case material, it was only about 2/3 the price.

Now, Bremont has issued a new version of the steel Supermarine 500m, this time with a Polar White dial. And holy smokes, it is one seriously attractive dive watch.

If you weren’t already tempted by Bremont’s Supermarine 500m, how about now?

Pole Position

This is hardly the first time a brand has found some design magic swapping out a black dial for a white one while keeping the rest of the watch basically the same.

The OG “Polar” dial would be the Rolex Explorer II, which added the white dial — christened “Polar” by fans — as a complement to its black-dialed spelunking watch in the 1980s. Tudor followed the same template at Watches and Wonders this year with its own “Polar” Explorer II-type watch, the Black Bay Pro. Then, of course, there’s the Omega Speedmaster, whose white lacquer-dial version became one of the most talked-about new watches of 2024.

Some of the Best Affordable Desktop Speakers Just Got a Significant Hi-Fi Upgrade

Audioengine makes some of the most popular desktop speakers around … and it seems to have found a successful formula of upgrading them to meet modern standards.

Earlier this year, the Texas-based audio maker released new and improved versions of its well-loved A2+ powered speaker system. They looked identical but featured an improved 24-bit DAC and a new USB-C input for easier connection to today’s laptops and desktops.

Then, this past May, it did the exact same thing with its larger HD4 powered speaker system. The speakers’ design remained the same, but Audioengine upgraded them with improved sound (thanks to a superior DAC) and a new USB-C input.

And now, to complete the lineup, Audioengine is giving the same update to its HD3 powered speaker system.

Meet the “Next Gen”

The Audioengine HD3 Next Gen are the latest iteration of the company’s HD3 powered speaker system, which was first introduced in 2016.

Like their predecessors, the “Next Gen” speakers are primed for desktop and laptop speaker use — they connect directly via 3.5mm or (new!) USB-C. But they also have built-in Bluetooth, so when you’re not using them as computer speakers, they work as a compact stereo streaming system.

Patagonia’s Affordable EDC-Outdoor Pack Brings an Indiana Jones Favorite into Modernity

“It’s where I keep all of my things. I get a lot of compliments on this. Plus, it’s not a man-purse. It’s called a satchel. Indiana Jones wears one.”

It’s been over 16 years since Zach Galifianakis uttered these words in The Hangover. While the film has aged like milk for numerous reasons, Galifianakis’s famous line has transmuted from a joke to a much more genuine sentiment.

Crossbody bags, slings, messengers — whatever you want to call them — have become mainstream thanks to their combination of convenience, agility and even stylishness.

Yet, even with all of the options out there these days, surprise new releases can still make waves, like Patagonia’s Terravia Sacoche Bag.

Patagonia Terravia Sacoche Bag
The Terravia Sacoche benefits from a simple, effective design.
Patagonia

Form follows function

One of the reasons this Patagonia bag is so affordable is its simplicity. The bag’s format is a function of its … function.

For instance, this bag swaps its shoulder strap for a wide pad attached to paracord tethers instead of more typical webbing. It’s a more straightforward layout that doesn’t sacrifice too much functionality (adjusting the length is still possible, if a little less straightforward).

This Affordable Multi-Tool Has an Incredibly Useful Function Even Leatherman Can’t Claim

Multi-tools are a lot like magic wands. No, they can’t cast spells, but they pack a shocking amount of utility into a format that, most times, slips comfortably into your pocket.

Yet, for all their permutations, some remarkably valuable functions have never successfully made the cut. Whether that’s a practicality issue or an engineering one, I can’t confidently say.

Maybe it’s just a question of nudging the rest of the industry toward these innovations. At least, that could be the case with the NexTool W4, a pocket-friendly multi-tool that could change the entire multi-tool category forever — hopefully for the better.

NexTool Adjustable Wrench W4 Multi Tool used as spanner
How has nobody made a ratcheting spanner multi-tool until now?
NexTool

Monkey, meet wrench

Two words: ratcheting spanner.

That’s what sets this multi-tool apart from its siblings and cousins. Also known as an “adjustable wrench,” spanners are useful for loosening and tightening bolts, screws and the like. The adjustable versions allow users to change the size of the tool’s jaws, offering greater utility and versatility.

Timex Is Practically Giving Away This Classic GMT With a Satisfying Twist

I’m your pusher

You may not notice it at first glance, but once you start admiring the classic beauty of the Waterbury Traditional GMT, you’re sure to spot that pusher at two o’clock.

the side of a Timex GMT watch
The crown is signed with Timex’s Waterbury logo.
Timex

A pusher feels very out of place on a GMT, but pressing it sets the GMT hand independently, providing a satisfying tactical experience every time.

The green arrow hand will jump ahead one hour when the pusher is tapped. Alternatively, it will move continuously clockwise when the pusher is held down, allowing quick changes over multiple time zones.

the back of a Timex GMT watch
The Waterbury Traditional GMT comes on a brown leather pin-buckle strap with quick-release pins.

The time and date are set in the standard manner by pulling the crown. When the crown is in the third position to set the time, the GMT hand defaults to the midnight spot and jumps back to where it was previously set once the crown is back in the zero position.

Crocs Gives Its Classic Clog an Unexpected Heritage Update

That means they’re still ultralight, durable, quick-drying, flexible foam. Whether you wear them daily to relieve some of the pressure on your feet or merely use them as recovery slides, the Classic Crafted Clog will still get the job done.

However, they’ve seen a major change in the upper, both in regard to its styling and material. That said, this is not some never-before-seen novelty — it should be familiar to anyone who has owned sneakers.

Now to the good stuff…

For the first time ever (barring any special edition releases I’m unaware of), Crocs has equipped its Classic Clog with a canvas upper. While the shoe retains its silhouette, this material swap alters its vibe significantly.

The James Brand The Madison carabiner on belt loop with keysThe James Brand

The James Brand The Madison

The James Brand Mehlville was the EDC mainstay’s first carabiner and has remained a best-seller since its launch. However, for those looking for a sleeker, more streamlined option, the brand has introduced its smaller sibling, The Madison. Boasting a billet aluminum construction and a similarly convenient and secure two-compartment design, this novel option is thinner, lighter, more stable and just as beautiful.

This weed vape takes everything the brand has learned over the last few years and improves its category-defining tech in numerous ways. This vape boasts a whopping 6x more draw power than previous models, a new hybrid heating system (hinging on real-time temperature control) and a new bowl style that’s simpler to use and easier to clean than ever before. It even charges faster, boasting a half-charge in under 20 minutes and a full charge in under 40.

This update to their very first model boasts a number of upgrades headlined by a new 7.2kWh battery pack promising to boost the range by 20 percent over the original’s 50 to 70 miles. Other improvements include a more efficient powertrain (making 80 hp and 721 ft-lbs of torque), a lighter steel alloy frame (total bike weight: 260 pounds) and the new Stark Arkenstone phone and docking station, with better connectivity, speed, brightness and clamping system.

The hands, indices, applied GP logo and solid gold rotor have all been treated with a shade of Aston Martin Racing Green, and even the unique lume formula emulates the legendary British motorsports shade. Finally, the watch features a metalized Aston Martin logo on the sapphire caseback and is limited to 88 pieces.

This Impossibly Tiny Titanium EDC Tool Can Still Save Your Life

“What if a whistle could be as small as an earbud but as loud as a jet engine?”

That’s the question the team at LastoolX began asking in 2019, after one of its engineers became trapped while climbing and had no effective way to call for help.

lastoolx tinyblast fingertip
I’ve seen some seriously tiny knives and EDC, but this one really takes the Baked by Melissa-sized cupcake.
LastoolX

Fast forward six years, and the answer is here in what looks like the tiniest multi-tool ever — and believe me, I’ve seen some small ones

Truly stripping down to the barest essentials, the TinyBlast still offers not one but two potentially life-saving functions, believe it or not.

King whistle

Made of tough titanium alloy materials, the TinyBlast measures just 0.83 inches long and weighs just 0.074 ounces.

In other words, you’d be well advised to attach it to something, be it a keychain, backpack or even the zipper pull on your jacket.
