Jeep’s Most Expensive Wrangler Is a Super-Limited Edition You Can’t Have

Believe it or not, Jeep sells the Wrangler in Great Britain. And here on the 70th anniversary of America joining the good fight against Nazi Germany, our World War II allies are getting their own special edition: the Jeep Wrangler 1941.

The Wrangler 1941 is a limited run of 41 vehicles celebrating 80 years of Jeep history, dating back to the first military Jeep that went into production. It’s based on the four-door Wrangler Rubicon, and uses a 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine — a significantly smaller motor than the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel Wrangler that Jeep sells in the United States, which puts out 197 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque.

A two-inch suspension lift kit is the the Wrangler 1941’s biggest mod. It gets enhanced underbody protection and wheel arch extensions, as well as black door sill guards, front and rear splash guards (it’s Britain, they have mud), a black fuel filler door, all-weather floormats and a 1941 decal across the hood. Jeep will sell it in four colors (or rather, colours): Brilliant Black, Granite Crystal, Firecracker Red and Billet Silver.

The most surprising thing about the Jeep Wrangler 1941 to Americans may be how much it costs. The Wrangler is an expensive, niche vehicle in Britain; its starting price will be £58,050, which converts to more than $81,000 at the present exchange rate.

For Brits, that’s more than $18,000 more expensive than the base diesel-powered Land Rover Defender 110. For Yanks, that’s more than $6,000 pricier than the Hemi-V8-powered Wrangler Rubicon 392 — and nearly $40,000 more than the standard Wrangler Rubicon.

Can Citizen Get Away With a $6,000 Automatic Watch?

Japanese watch companies make strategically baffling moves with some regularity. The new circa-$6,000 automatic watch from Citizen doesn’t seem to fit with the brand’s familiar character or affordable positioning — but it does fit into an overall trend of once primarily inexpensive Japanese brands moving significantly upmarket.

Indeed, thanks to its high-end execution from its case through to a movement developed with its subsidiary Swiss company La Joux-Perret, this new automatic is far more than a watch you can simply write off as an “expensive Citizen.”

Before asking “what’s Citizen playing at?”, take a look at the watch itself. It’s simply called The Citizen Mechanical (“The” being a distinguishing part of the name). At 40mm wide and 10.9mm thick in steel, it has an angular case with sharp facets and contrasting finishes, including the famous zaratsu technique.

It also has an “integrated bracelet,” which is something of a buzz term in the watch industry. It actually refers to a case design without traditional lugs, which requires a proprietary bracelet. The new watch finished to luxury standards, with a chronometer-beating accuracy of -3 / +5 seconds per day and 60 hours of power reserve.

It certainly looks more refined than your typical Citizen watch at first blush — but a view of the movement through the case back tells you right away that there’s a lot more going on. This is no basic Miyota with a stamped-out rotor; the automatic movement in question is called the Caliber 0200, and it was produced in collaboration with the high-end Swiss movement manufacturer Citizen acquired in 2012.

mechanical

Citizen

But wait, as they say, there’s more. It’s not simply a movement produced in Switzerland and purchased for Citizen watches; although we don’t have all the details, the manufacture, assembly and finishing of most components is said to take place in Japan — La Joux-Perret primarily provided design and expertise help.

For most people familiar with Citizen, solar-powered watches in myriad variations costing a couple hundred dollars come to mind, not automatics priced to compete with Rolex and Omega. The price point of this The Citizen Mechanical isn’t totally out of the blue for the brand, however, with examples like record-breaking solar powered watches and an upscale Citizen sub-brand called Campanola preceding it. (They even made a circa-$90,000 tourbillon watch.)

Watch industry-watchers have expected more interesting examples to result from the integration of its Swiss movement maker, but it’s not clear what will stick as part of the brand’s longterm image and collections.

So who’s spending $6K on a Citizen watch? Maybe speculative collectors who see the brand going the way of Grand Seiko. For now, the The Citizen Mechanical will be part of the brand’s permanent collection, and is expected to be available for purchase in the fall of 2021.

This Fancy Honda Is the Closest Thing We Have to a Self-Driving Car

We now have the world’s first official semi-autonomous car…and it’s probably not the one you would have anticipated. Japanese authorities have cleared Honda to produce Level 3 self-driving-capable versions of the aging Honda Legend sedan — a.k.a. the RLX that Acura killed off in America.

Honda will offer a limited run of 100 semi-autonomous-tech-equipped Legends in its homeland, with each costing the equivalent of $102,000. The company did not announce plans to extend the Level 3 technology to other vehicles, or countries.

Level 2 systems like GM’s Super Cruise and Tesla’s Autopilot require driver attention at all times. Level 3 systems, on the other hand, allow the car to operate autonomously in certain situations and let the driver think about other things — just so long as said driver ready to take over at any moment.

Admittedly, Honda’s system — called Honda Sensing Elite — is something of a baby step. Its sole Level 3 function is called Traffic Jam Pilot, which allows the car to operate itself during low-speed traffic jams on the highway. The driver cedes control to the vehicle, enabling them to, say, watch a movie on the infotainment screen. But the driver must be ready to intervene if called upon.

While this is an important milestone, it’s one that many manufacturers have passed on. Audi announced a similar system for the A8 back in 2017, but backed off on implementing it. Most companies are skipping Level 3 autonomy to work on Level 4, where cars can operate with full autonomy within a bounded area.

After all, revolutionizing the transport of people and goods is a bit more lucrative than offering a fancy feature on a luxury car. <anufacturers don’t view the incremental gains as worth the substantial regulatory hurdles required to implement them. And they also don’t view Level 3 — relax, but be ready to step in at any moment! — as fair to the driver.

The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo: Tomorrow’s Sports Car, But Make It Outback

The Taycan Cross Turismo 4 starts at $92,250, while the Cross Turismo 4S starts at $111,650, the Cross Turismo Turbo at $154,850 and the Cross Turismo Turbo S at $188,950. All of those are a dash more expensive than their sedan equivalents, the actual amount varying by trim.

Of course, as Porsche is quick to point out, the wagon version comes with all sorts of standard features that are optional on their sedan equivalents, from the aforementioned big battery to the standard active suspension and panoramic roof — and, in the case of the starter Cross Turismo, a second motor up front.

Also standard, of course, is a modern, elegant interior, wireless Apple CarPlay and three years of free charging at Electrify America stations. It’s still a Porsche, though, so you will of course be able to add tens of thousands of dollars worth of options to the bottom line if you so desire. Deliveries are expected to kick off this summer here in the U.S.

(And yes, in case you were wondering, the car configurator is already online.)

Oh, and those bikes you see on the back of that Taycan on the left? Yeah, they’re the new e-bikes Porsche is also rolling out this spring to go with the new car. More on that to come.

This Highly-Covetable ‘Cola’ Q Timex Watch Is Now 30% Off at Huckberry

Looking for even more great savings? Head over to Today’s Best Deals page to see all our top deals from today.

Are you sensing a pattern emerging here? If you feel like the Q Timex line of watches has made quite a few appearances around these parts over the last couple of years, well, you’re not wrong. But when a brand comes storming out of the gate with a deeply desirable Pepsi colorway of a throwback diver and then keeps on delivering winner after winner—from updated colors to entirely new riffs on Timex’s archives — that deserves a little attention.

So here we are, talking once more about a release from the brand that takes a licking and keeps on ticking. This time around, it’s made in conjunction with the team at Huckberry, the online retailer that’s got everything you need to make your life 143% outdoorsier — plus a solid collection of watches that you can wear in the wild, holed up at home, or wherever else might strike your fancy. And, in a bit of poetic symmetry, this watch is also inspired by a delicious cola, though the proliferation of black and red on the dial and bezel should be a pretty clear indicator that it’s the one folks actually want to drink. (I’m sorry, but has there ever been a time when “Is Pepsi OK?” was answered in the affirmative?)

The styling on the Huckberry x Timex “Cola” sport watch differentiates it from its fizzy forbear, though. Instead of a 50/50 color split on the bezel, this time around you’ve just got red running from the top of the hour to the 20-minute mark. That, plus a crosshair dial, gives the watch a more military-inspired vibe.

Huckberry

Huckberry x Timex “Cola”

Timex Huckberry

The watch first debuted this past fall, but there’s never been a better time to get one for yourself, since Huckberry just knocked 30 percent off the price tag (originally an affordable $189). Considering the overall affordability of Timex in general, that means you’ve got one hell of a deal on your hands. So, what’s someone to do with all this information? Well, clicking over to Huckberry and filling that cart would be a good place to start.

Then, maybe crack open a soda. (You know the one.) You’ve earned it.

The Sero from Samsung is a TV designed for mobile device users

When it comes to display technology, Sony, LG and Samsung are perhaps the biggest names out there. Although there are Chinese brands such as TCL and Xiaomi that have been surging in popularity, discerning buyers will go for established names in the industry. After giving us The Frame TV, the South Korean consumer electronics outfit targets another segment with The Sero.

In its regular configuration, this model seems like any other flat screens out there. Samsung loves to innovate home entertainment and their engineers came up with a crazy feature. With the understanding that most people now consume their multimedia on their smartphones and tablets, the company endows The Sero a quirky but interesting functionality.

To make it easier for us to view content in a format that is compatible with mobile devices, this TV rotates. Yes, surveys show that these days, most videos and images are usually taken with a vertical screen in mind. By default, we normally hold our handsets and slates in portrait orientation. To ensure that whatever we mirror on The Sero scales properly, Samsung allows it to rotate.

You can always switch it back to landscape to play video games or watch movies. Nevertheless, it’s the novelty of keeping it upright that’s becoming its biggest selling point. Another awesome element about The Sero is the integrated stand/speaker assembly. The casters make it easy to move around, while adjustable stoppers keep it in place.

The bottom section houses a 60W speaker system to deliver powerful audio. Meanwhile, the Navy Blue colorway somehow pairs well with the overall design. The Sero flaunts a 42.5 QLED panel with a 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160) resolution. Those who frequent social media platforms are sure to love it.

Jaguar and Land Rover Are Working to Fix Their Biggest Problem

Jaguar and Land Rover produce some of the world’s most aesthetically pleasing and capable automobiles, but build quality has long been an Achilles’ heel for both brands. Their cars have a notorious reputation for poor reliability — a reputation routinely grounded in brand initial quality surveys and broader testing, where both Jaguar and Land Rover routinely languish with Alfa Romeo in the bottom five brands.

According to JLR, poor build quality is hurting the bottom line. Recently, CEO Thierry Bolore told investors that reliability is costing the company 100,000 units in sales globally per year, according to Automotive News Europe. That’s not to mention the cost of repairing vehicles under warranty, which can run in the hundreds of millions per year.

And it’s not just Consumer Reports-reading Americans who are skeptical of the brands. Another example of the broader dissatisfaction against Jaguars and Land Rovers: Chinese buyers protested outside the company’s headquarters there in 2018.

The company has a plan to fix it, however. Land Rover head of design Gerry McGovern told investors on the same call that a central part of their new product plan would be “reducing the complexity of (their) vehicles massively,” which would lead to “fewer things going wrong because the process will not be as complex.”

Reducing complexity seems eminently sensible. (Does the Range Rover need six engine options?) And, in theory, much of the complexity issue may resolve itself when JLR goes mostly electric; EVs are naturally simpler with far fewer moving parts, and much of the car production will be outsourced, as JLR will be partnering on powertrains and platforms for its new vehicles.

In theory, vehicle production itself could be outsourced to, say, Magna Steyr, who currently build two Jaguar vehicles. JLR could even follow former corporate partners Ford and Volvo by outsourcing infotainment development to Google. The transition could leave Jaguar and Land Rover basically controlling the styling and fine performance tuning of the new vehicles…which is probably what most buyers would want.

Here’s Everything We Know So Far About the iPhone 13

Apple isn’t expected to release the iPhone 13 for quite a while — based on past reveals, we expect the new phone to debut this September — but that hasn’t stopped the leaks from the leaking and rumor mill from turning. People love Apple rumors, after all.

It’s likely that Apple will again release four models of the iPhone 13 (even if there are conflicting reports about that, given that the iPhone 12 mini isn’t selling as well as Apple likely hoped), but most of everything else is relatively unknown. Nonetheless, we’ve rounded up all the new iPhone speculation from across the Internet and brought it together for your reading pleasure

Don’t expect the iPhone 13 to feature a radical redesign

All signs are pointing to 2022 being the big year for an Apple redesign. According to noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 14 that arrives in a year and a half or so will be the one where Apple tries to tackle the iPhone’s current notch problem.

The iPhone 14 could have more of a “hole punch” design, similar to the latest Samsung Galaxy smartphones, where the notch is replaced with a small cutout for the camera that seems to float in the top corning of the display. (There’s a slight chance that Apple could solely integrate this smaller notch into the Pro models of the iPhone 14, as it tends to give those the best features before sharing them with more affordable models the following year.)

However, since Apple gave the iPhone 12 a pretty big redesign (with its flat edges, new MagSafe charging system, and new camera systems), it’s likely we’ll have to wait a little longer for the next one.

A 120Hz refresh rate display could hit the iPhone

While most high-end Android smartphones offer a 120Hz refresh rate display, the iPhone 12 maxes out at 60Hz. The higher refresh rate means that the screen image refreshes more frequently, allowing the display to look and feel faster — great for scrolling and mobile gaming.

Apple has integrated a 120Hz refresh rate (which it calls ProMotion) into its recent iPad Pro models, but likely opted against bringing it to the iPhone 12 due its potential drain on battery. Kuo expects that the next two iPhone “Pro” models will support ProMotion for the first time.

A better low-light camera is likely

Apple gave the two iPhone 12 Pro models a LIDAR sensor, which was first featured in last year’s iPad Pro. The sensor helps with AR effects and, more importantly, with low-light photography; it greatly improves a camera’s autofocusing ability (making it up to six times as fast) so that it can gather more light. (It also allows the Pro models to capture Night Mode portrait shots.)

With the iPhone 13, Apple is expected to integrate the new sensor in all models, and therefore make these previous “pro” features more accessible.

The Lightning Port probably isn’t going anywhere…yet

The iPhone 13 will still have a Lightning Port. It’s been said for years now that USB-C is “the port of the future,” and indeed, Apple has itself integrated it into its latest laptops and iPads — but don’t expect it to abandon its proprietary charging port just yet. MacRumors attained a note by Kuo, who suggested that Apple is worried that because the USB-C port isn’t as waterproof as Lightning, it wouldn’t be as reliable as to integrate in a waterproof iPhone. (Even most Androids have a high water-resistance rating and also have a USB-C charging port.) Kuo even suggests that Apple is more likely to jump to a port-less iPhone — meaning it only charges wirelessly — rather than go to a USB-C charging port.

Buffalo Trace’s Newest Bourbon Could Literally Save Lives

Working with Outlaw State of Kind, Chris and Morgane Stapleton’s charity, Buffalo Trace Distillery and the E.H. Taylor, Jr. brand are auctioning off bottles from an extremely limited single barrel pick, putting bourbon hype culture to good use.

Bidding is online and open now, with the estimated value set at $5,000 (the highest bid at publishing was just under $3,000). The whiskey is 9-year-old bourbon proofed to 100. Representatives for Buffalo Trace, E.H. Taylor’s parent distillery, say there are less than 100 bottles available from the single barrel selection. Proceeds from initial auctions will go to immediate disaster relief in Texas and Kentucky. Following bottles will be used similarly as the year goes on. The one-off bottling celebrates the 124th anniversary of the passing of the Bottled-In-Bond Act of 1897.

For the uninitiated, in 1897, Americans were blessed with the first consumer protection legislation ever passed. It didn’t come in the form of a guarantee of food safety or safeguards on price gouging; it came in the shape of a liquor bottle. The Bottled-In-Bond Act of 1897, which is celebrating its 124th anniversary, offers distilleries a means to communicate to drinkers the quality of their whiskey with a simple tax strip across the cork. For Chris Stapleton, it means he’s going to make a wicked album.

“The first glass of E. H. Taylor, Jr. I ever had was in the studio. Vance Powell, engineer of both music and good times, brought a bottle to the session for inspiration,” Stapleton said. “That week we recorded an entire album, and that album was Traveller. We’ve made it a point to keep a bottle around ever since.”
