A Beginner’s Guide To Purchasing Luxury Shoes For Men

Everyone knows that the shoes are a girl’s best friend, but what about us guys? If you pay a bit of attention to the diverse and rich offerings when it comes to men’s shoes, you’ll see that the opposite can be true – men also have the possibility to drown their sorrows in a shoe shopping session (if they choose to do so).

Moreover, if women have a bit of wiggle room when choosing a pair of cute stilettos that go well with both jeans and skirts, men have to be careful when choosing their dress shoes. There is a strict code of elegance and style when it comes to pairing the right shoes with the right suit. In addition, things get even more confusing when you introduce casual footwear in the mix.

So, to give you a hand, we put together a brief guide to choosing luxury shoes for men (dress and casual).

Choosing Casual Footwear

Nowadays, you can mix and match to create your own style. However, if you’re not confident in your fashion skills, it’s best to stick with the already tested options. For instance, if you’re going to buy platform sneakers, you can’t combine them with an elegant or business-casual outfit. Instead, you need to use a sporty outfit with a fresh and modern vibe.

Take for example the latest Versace’s designer shoes for men collection features a wide range of designs that fit both casual and elegant outfits. Still, it’s best to play it safe and go with loafers for an elegant outfit and regular sneakers for a casual outfit. But, if you really want to showcase your playful side, there are a few amazing platform sneakers that will take your breath away.

In summary, when choosing casual footwear it’s best to choose the safe option if your wardrobe doesn’t include trendy items.

Choosing Dress Shoes

Believe it or not, it is easier to shop for dress shoes than it is to find the right casual footwear! This happens because dress shoes must follow specific rules in order to fit a suit. Therefore, there are a few well-established designs, such as:

  • Oxford – highest business formality dress shoe
  • Blucher –  slightly more casual business style
  • Brogue –  casual, decorated leather shoe
  • Wingtip – casual style, but heavily decorated
  • Saddle shoe – casual style usually two-tone

For formal occasions, each of these designs can be found in either black, cognac, dark and light brown, white (considered rather flashy), or two-toned. Now, men who feel confident in their style have the option of choosing a colorful shoe (all the above-mentioned designs are available in a wide range of colors). Still, if you’re a beginner, it’s best to stick with the standard colors (black, brown, or two-toned).

You should also know that the color of your shoes needs to match the color of your belt. In addition, if you wear a classic watch with a leather strap, it’s best to select one in a neutral color (black is the best option).

The Price is Not Everything

Most beginners seem to believe that an expensive pair of shoes is the right path to a stylish and well-fitted outfit. Sadly, they are willing to sacrifice fit and comfort for the sake of a brand label as well.

While it’s safe to say you won’t find any low-cost luxury shoes, you shouldn’t go for the brand. Take a step back and analyze the way the shoe is built. Also, test it out, make sure it fits your foot and your style. For instance, if the shoe uses laces and you don’t feel comfortable with the idea, it’s best to go for a loafer style instead.

In the end, a high-quality shoe is more than just a brand label. Features like fit, comfort, durability, design, and others also play an important role.

10 of the Best Headphone Stands in 2021

A headphone stand can be a pretty inexpensive desktop accessory that can do wonders for the look and feel of your workspace. Most importantly, it can help declutter your workspace so that you can be a more organized and productive person.

When deciding which headphone stand is right for you, there are few things to consider. The first thing is figuring out how much you want to spend. The main thing that separates an inexpensive headphone from an expensive one is the materials used — metal is more expensive than plastic, after-all. Then you want to make sure you like the design of the stand, and that it’ll fit and compliment your current headphones.

The good news is that if you’re in the market for a headphone stand, you’ve got options — we’ve rounded up our favorites below.

Satechi Aluminum USB Headphone Stand

$49.89

Like most of Satechi’s desktop accessories, this headphone stand is available in Space Gray to match nicely with Apple’s computers. It also functions as a USB hub with three USB 3.0 ports (to transfer files or back-up data) and a headphone jack. Unfortunately, the USB-A ports do not support pass-through charging.

$39.99

The SteelSeries HS1 is a simple yet unique-looking headphone stand that’s designed to work with SteelSeries’s popular gaming headsets. But it can really safely hold most any pair of headphones just fine.

We Finally Know the Last Pieces of the Wrangler Rubicon 392 Puzzle

It’s probably no surprise to hear that the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is one of the cars we can’t wait to drive in 2021. A 470-horsepower V8-powered Wrangler that can, in stock form, accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds yet still tangle with some of the gnarliest off-road trails in America sounds absolutely bonkers.

Now, as the longtail trickle of news about this Jeep finally winds down and we get ready to drive it, we finally have two of the last puzzle pieces of information about the car. And, well…the power output won’t be the only part of this vehicle that feels decadent.

One puzzle piece has the price point. Well, turns out we were right: the Rubicon 392 will be incredibly expensive for a Wrangler. It will start with a suggested MSRP of $73,500, which becomes $74,995 after the destination charge. That’s before you add any options from the dealer or the aftermarket.

That price is around $20,000 more than the next most expensive Wrangler, the High Altitude 4xe plug-in hybrid. And while the Rubicon 392 does pack a powerful 6.4-liter V8, that’s also the same engine Dodge will sell you in a Charger Scat Pack for $41,000.

The other puzzle piece is fuel economy. Jeep has been making great strides toward becoming a greener brand, with the plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe hitting dealers and the Magneto EV concept coming soon. But the Wrangler Rubicon 392 will provide a decisive counterpoint to that narrative. The EPA rates it at an especially thirsty 13 mpg city, 17 mpg highway and 14 mpg combined.

For perspective, that’s more efficient than another Stellantis product, the Ram TRX, which earns a (classic) Hummer-esque 10 mpg city. But it’s also the same rating as the outgoing Toyota Land Cruiser, which is renowned for being woefully fuel-efficient for the times.

While we have no doubt the Wrangler Rubicon 392 will be crazy fun, you’re going to pay for every bit of that fun at the dealer…and the pump.

This New E-Bike Is Perfect for the City — and for Escaping It

This time last year, the coronavirus pandemic-fueled bike boom was just beginning. But here in the spring of 2021, with the weather warming up and life slowly returning to (something resembling) normal, it’s an equally great time to consider a shiny new ride.

And while Congress is beginning to discuss a juicy e-bike tax credit, Cannondale already has us drooling with its latest e-line, the Adventure Neo series, which just launched today.

While it may just be hitting the stores now, I spent this past Saturday test-riding one of the four bikes in the line — the Adventure Neo 3 EQ. Here are some quick takeaways from my first ride.

The Adventure Neo Is User-Friendly

I’m normally not a big step-through frame fan, mostly for aesthetic reasons. But after spending an entire Saturday on and off this bike, I must admit the utter lack of a top tube eliminates the pain of mounting and dismounting.

cannondale adventure neo 3

Cannondale

Another feature I love is the Adventure Neo’s intuitive dashboard, which makes it easy to monitor speed (I topped out at 24 miles per hour on the downside of a bridge) and toggle through four levels of power assistance, which operate in conjunction with nine versatile gears. It took a team effort to figure out how to activate the lights (hold down the plus button for a few seconds), but once me and my fellow riders did, they were mighty bright — which is quite nice in the midnight hour.

While the kickstand could stand to be a bit more substantial, it’s a godsend when stopping. And removing the battery from the downtube to recharge is remarkably easy. If I have one beef here, it’s that the lack of a top tube, combined with the weight (about 56 pounds), makes this beast rather awkward to tote up and down stairs.

This E-Bike Is Playful

The Adventure Neo 3 EQ has a couple of other features you won’t find on most urban e-bikes. First, it boasts a set of adjustable front shocks, which can be locked down for speed or opened up when you’re in the mood to hop curbs and plow through potholes…as I’m prone to doing.

cannondale adventure neo

Cannondale

Second, there’s an element that’s becoming increasingly more mainstream: a handlebar lever-activated dropper post. You’ll find the ability to sink your seat almost universal on modern mountain bikes, an increasing number of gravel bikes — and now urban bikes, too. It makes sense: they’re great for letting you get behind the seat when navigating rocky steeps, and cutting wind resistance on smoother descents.

These two features, combined with long battery life (see below), bode well for taking this bike well beyond city limits — and far off the beaten path.

This Cannondale Is All-Day-Ready

I know because I tried. On Saturday I left my Manhattan apartment just a bit after noon to attend a rally and march demanding justice for Breonna Taylor (who was killed in her apartment by cops, who still walk free to this day, a year ago this month). The event, which began in Brooklyn and crossed over a bridge to Manhattan, was a heartwarming reminder of how much people still care about racial justice. But as happens now and then, one of our fellow bike marshals got arrested in the line of duty, which ultimately meant a ride back to the NYPD’s 75th Precinct waaaay out in East New York to do jail support till she got released.

cannondale adventure neo

Steve Mazzucchi

But I digress. That extra mission turned out to be a great test of this bike’s Bosch motor and 400 watt-hour battery. I ended up covering close to half a century, and when I finally got home, I still had two power bars left — which is consistent with the brand’s claimed 65 miles of range.

Even with power, that’s a lot of riding. But this bike’s upright riding position, beefy 650x56mm tires, a cushy saddle and ultra-responsive hydraulic disc brakes ensured I got home safely — and without being too sore, either.

The line hits four price points — Adventure Neo 4 ($2,700), Adventure Neo 3 EQ ($3,000), Adventure Neo 2 EQ ($3,400) and Adventure Neo 1 EQ ($4,350) — and is available today.

Rapper and Entrepreneur Travis Scott Launches Cacti, an Agave-Flavored Spiked Seltzer

wireless festival 2019

Lorne ThomsonGetty Images

From Nike to McDonald’s, rapper and entrepreneur Travis Scott already has a long list of brand collaborations under his belt — and that list just grew a little longer. His latest partnership, with brewing giant Anheuser-Busch, is an an agave spiked seltzer called Cacti. Because what celebrity doesn’t have a booze brand nowadays?

Cacti is a 7.0-percent ABV seltzer flavored with agave syrup, available in three flavors: pineapple, lime and strawberry. The style of beverage stems from Scott’s love of both easy-drinking seltzer and tequila.

To clarify, Cacti isn’t fermenting the agave, as one would to make a mezcal or tequila, so don’t expect the brews to taste like a tequila soda. (Brands like Volley and Onda, however, are basically canned tequila spritzes.)

cacti drink

Cacti

Regardless of the specifics of the drink, fans are going wild. During a promotional tour to whip up buzz for Cacti in Los Angeles, Scott drew crowds of people trying to get some of his drinks — or just a selfie with the man behind the magic. The craziness around the release is reminiscent of Scott’s 2020 partnership with McDonald’s on the Travis Scott Meal, comprising of a Sprite, a Quarter Pounder with bacon and French fries with barbecue sauce.

Around the same time the Travis Scott Meal debuted, the rapper had also teased the upcoming release of his spiked seltzers. As Complex points out, in Scott’s single “Franchise,” he raps: “Cacti’s, not no iced tea.” A commercial for the drinks aired during the Grammys a day before the seltzers launched, as well.

To accompany the release of Cacti — and presumably to reach a fan base that isn’t old enough to legally drink yet — Scott also dropped a line of Cacti-branded merch, which includes apparel, as well as novelty items like a wall clock and neon sign.

Cacti is available nationwide wherever Anheuser-Busch products are sold, and you can find locations near you here. Rather than being a limited release, Cacti is here to stay; the drinks are available in nine- and 12-packs in 12-ounce cans, or in single 16-ounce and 25-ounce cans.

As Scott is known to ad-lib in his songs: “It’s lit.

One of Our Favorite Hiking Boot Makers Just Created Its First Backpack

It isn’t uncommon for specialized companies (outdoor brands or otherwise) to break away from what they know to explore new product categories…but the ones that do usually don’t have nearly a century-long history of making a particular type of gear. Danner does — its boot-making story goes back to 1937 — but it didn’t let that stop it from making its first backpack here in 2021.

Daypack 26L

Danner huckberry.com

$190.00

On the contrary, in fact. Danner applied the craftsmanship know-how attained during all those years of footwear creation to make a bag that, like its boots, is equally suited to adventurous and everyday living.

The Danner 26L Dayback boasts a docket of features including a large central compartment for clothing and gear, two small pockets for essentials, a pocket on its lid’s exterior, a protective laptop sleeve and exterior pockets for a water bottle or other similar-sized items.

The pack opens and closes with the tried-and-true combo of a flip top and a cinched closure, which allows for additional flexibility when packing (meaning you can cram those last few extra layers on top. The lid secures with a metal G-hook affixed to a strap that you can crank down when you’re carrying less, too.

Danner‘s designers complemented the bag’s main body fabric of durable nylon with leather-reinforced panels that hearken to its many footwear predecessors while adding durability to key wear areas like the bottom. A line of red lash points running up the bag’s face makes for one final feature detail, but also calls to mind the laces of Danner’s classic hiking boots.

The 13 Best Charcoal Grills You Can Buy in 2021

This definitive guide to the best charcoal grills of 2021 explores everything you need to know to find a charcoal grill best suited to your needs, including features to look for, materials, looks and price.

The Best Charcoal Grills for the Money

      The Upgrades

Beyond BTUs, max temperatures and fuel cost, the fundamental difference between charcoal grills and its competitors is convenience. Charcoal grills are inconvenient in every way that a gas, pellet or electric grill is not. This is the fundamental appeal. In the same way many driving enthusiast prefer manuals to automatics, there is carnal satisfaction in direct control, higher failure rates and sky-high potential. Yes, charcoal grills can do things the others can’t, but it’s the no handlebars process that makes great. From the most iconic backyard toy of the 20th century to something called a Yoder Smoker, these are the best you can buy right now.

        Weber Original Kettle Premium Grill

        Courtesy

Weber Original Kettle Premium 22-Inch Charcoal Grill

        Weber bbqguys.com

        $165.00

Best Overall Charcoal Grill: When you talk about charcoal grilling, you start with Weber’s kettle. The brand continues to represent the ideal mix of performance and price. Its customary porcelain-enameled steel body is sturdy enough to lock heat in and light enough to tow around without throwing out your back. Its construction is such that moving parts, screws and levers are kept to a bare minimum, which means it lasts much, much longer than other grills under $200.

The Premium version of the original kettle upgrades the ash catch in such a way that, to me, makes the $55-or-so extra worth it. Another bonus of investing in Weber kettles is the vast collection of aftermarket accessories you can get for one.

        BUY NOW

        Weber Original Kettle Grill

        Courtesy

Weber Original Kettle 22-Inch Charcoal Grill

        Weber bbqguys.com

        $109.00

Best Cheap Charcoal Grill: Materials, manufacturing and brand legacy all considered, it’s shocking the original Weber is still this affordable. The 22-inch staple is made with the same enameled steel as the Premium version and offers the same 363-inch cooking space (between 15 and 20 burgers worth of space), but it lacks the easier to clean ash catch. It’s not a huge issue, given the competition for a charcoal grill of this size is mostly rinky dink Amazon brands that don’t have customer service lines, strong warranties or any real reputation. If you’re dead set on a cheap grill and go for something other than the Weber original you’re doing so in an effort to be different, not have a better grill.

The Original PK Grill & Smoker

        Courtesy

        PK360 Grill + Smoker

        PK Grills pkgrills.com

        $799.99

Best Small Charcoal Grill, Best Charcoal Grill and Smoker: Let’s get this out of the way: almost any charcoal grill can be a smoker, too. It comes down to having enough space to create two-zone cooking areas (explained superbly by Amazing Ribs here). This is what PK (short for Portable Kitchen) grills are known for — they’re small enough to toss in the bed of a pickup with other tailgate gear, yet, thanks to four very smartly placed vents, functional enough to grill and smoke at high levels.

The PK grill is outfitted with vents on the top right, top left, bottom right and bottom left of the cast-aluminum grill body. When you want to sear steaks, chops or chicken, you open the fuel-side vents and let the fire rip. When you want to smoke ribs or a small pork butt, place the coals on one side of the grill and the meat on the opposite side of the grates. Then open the vent under the coals and over the meat — this feeds the fire and smokes the meat indirectly. The entire thing is rust-proof, too. (Read our review).

        BUY NOW

        Weber Go-Anywhere Grill

        Courtesy

        Weber Go-Anywhere Portable Charcoal Grill

        Weber bbqguys.com

        $54.99

Best Portable Charcoal Grill: The Go-Anywhere grill weighs 14.5 pounds, which is featherweight in charcoal grilling terms. It’s large enough for 6 to 8 burgers, two regular-sized steaks or one whole chicken. It is not a grill you’ll be able to effectively smoke or slow cook on consistently, but it offers a huge upgrade to camp dining. Because most of the places you’ll use this grill will necessitate packing light and thus not carrying a charcoal chimney, we recommend bringing a pack of lighter cubes with it wherever it goes.

        BUY NOW

        Why Buy a Charcoal Grill?

        Pros of Charcoal Grilling

Ultra high heat: other than commercial salamander burners (like this one), no grill type will reach the heat levels charcoal and wood-fired grills will. Expect maximum temperatures over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, reaching up to 1,250 depending on your setup.

Versatility: It gets hotter than hell, but it works just as well for low-and-slow cooks. When airflow is handled well and the fire is tended evenly, charcoal grills can hold steady temperature for days.

Fuel Variety: unlike gas or electric (not so much pellet), charcoal grills can cook with affordable Kingsford coals, more premium lump coal, binchotan or even coconut shells.

        Cons of Charcoal Grilling

Small learning curve: Learning how to properly stack coals, light a fire, hold a steady temperature and control airflow takes time.

A big mess: Expect your hands, your grill and everything in the general vicinity of the grill to have a slight tinge of charcoal dust for the foreseeable future.

Semi weather dependent: Where gas, pellet and electric grills can operate in windy and even rainy conditions, charcoal can struggle. The wind can choke out or puff up a fire to unmanageable levels.

Time sink: Lighting coals takes more time than clicking the go button on a gas grill. Cleaning the grill takes time. If you’re looking to grill multiple times a week, a nice gas grill may be a better option.

What to Look for in a Charcoal Grill

Materials Matter: Whether you’re shopping online or in-person, seek out construction information. Does the listing have two dozen bullets touting all the heavy-gauge stainless steel, cast aluminum and enameled iron (or steel)? That’s a good sign. If it’s not flexing its construction, it’s more likely to have rust spots, fail at retaining heat and generally come apart earlier than you’d want.

Beefy Warranties: Buying a grill that’s a few hundred dollars and it has a one-year parts warranty? Don’t buy it. Something that costs that much should be guaranteed, in part at least, for three to five years. Some of the grills on this guide come with lifetime part warranties.

Adjustable (and Customizable) Grates: Look for a wheel or lever that lets you move the grates or the coal bed up and down — preferably both. This allows for more cooking methods. As an added bonus, some companies offer upgraded grates (or there are aftermarket grates you can buy).

Vents! Vents! Vents!: In the making of a single meal, airflow determines quality more than great grates, coal quality and construction. It allows for you to feed a fire to sear like you want, keep a medium heat to roast a chicken or smoke ribs nice and slow. The more vents to play with, the better.

Delivery and Setup: This is a simple one. Some grills come fully assembled, others take a full day to set up. Look at this before shipping a 500-pound piece of metal to your house.

Weber Original Kettle 22-Inch Charcoal Grill

        Weber bbqguys.com

        $109.00

It should come as no surprise that among the best charcoal grills for the money is the maker of the best value charcoal grills. The 18-inch version of Weber’s kettle grill is large enough to grill close to 10 burgers, comes with an ash catch and is available for less than $100. All other pros related to Weber construction, versatility and durability apply, too.

A $109 grill (that frequently goes on sale) that’s built of enameled iron, comes with a trio of vents for controlled airflow and looks kind of decent? Sure enough. Nex-Grill’s compact cart grill isn’t going to last forever and won’t be suited for large grill gatherings, but it’s got all the features needed for good grilling and entry-level smoking. Plus, it’s available at Home Depot.

This grill from Ikea was designed to fit with the brand’s Applaro outdoor furniture collection. For around $350, you get plenty of storage and a surprisingly well-made budget grill, complete with requisite vents for airflow control and a very handy pull-out ash tray.

Masterbuilt Gravity Series 560 Digital Charcoal Grill + Smoker

        Masterbuilt walmart.com

        $497.00

Masterbuilt’s charcoal take on a wood pellet grill is the most controversial charcoal grill on the list. Load coals in the hopper and play with the grill’s onboard computer — which controls temperature levels and air flow — to grill with precision without any experience. That functionality, which also enables the cook to go more hands-off (which means more time with the people you’re cooking for), is likely the future of grilling. The pain points are temperature maximum and construction. The former is significantly lower than your standard charcoal grill (just 700 degrees), and the latter is questionable at best, with some plastic and painted stainless steel that chips rather easily. Looking for something you can turn on in the morning and not come back to until dinnertime? This is it.

Broilmaster is one of grilling’s old guards. Founded in 1966, the company has iterated its design into a unique, highly functional and ultra-durable charcoal grill. A cast-aluminum body was one of the founding principle which has lasted to today, where it is still the gold standard for even heat distribution and weather resistance. And though its grates can’t be cycled up or down, it does have a unique split-grate setup that allows for cooking nearer or further from the flame. The pull out ashtray and vent count are the icing on top.

        Hasty-Bake bbqguys.com

        $1,099.00

Lauded by professional chefs, Hasty Bake charcoal grills ride the line between commercial and residential use in their functionality and no-bullshit aesthetic. The company made its first grill — then called a charcoal oven — in 1948 and has been making them non-stop since. From a construction perspective, the grill is a beast. Loads of 18-gauge powder-coated stainless steel make up the body, and the grates are nickel-plated steel. Parts come with a 5-year warranty, too. A quirk: the grill has a ventless hood, which changes… a lot. Instead of smoke and heat flowing up through the coal bed and out the top of the grill, heat rises to the top of the lid, where it meets a heat deflector, which recirculates the heat. This means hotspots are a rarity, and creates what amounts to a charcoal convection oven.

A 375-pound charcoal grill with more than 700 square inches of cooking space perfectly placed vents make the near perfect party grill. Removable cooking grates are standard fare, but being able to remove the charcoal grate is a huge help with cleaning a grill this size. One last thing: the wagon-style wheels are made of the same heavy-as-shit stainless steel as the grill body, meaning they won’t casually crack or break down like many others.

The serial grill reviewers at Amazing Ribs said it best: “If you’re committed to charcoal, but envious of your neighbor’s shiny gasser, the Napoleon PRO605 may be the answer.”

Napoleon is primarily a gas grill maker, but its glossy stainless steel charcoal grill is exceptional, and it’s one of very few high-end charcoal grills that have that new look. Other than its highly durable build, the grill ticks all the boxes: variable coal bed height, sturdy grates and (relatively) easy-cleaning. Its Hub grill targets pain points in the charcoal grilling process and addresses them with features like electric charcoal ignition and porcelain covered grates that are easy to clean. It’s also got a built in rotiserrie over the grates, which few charcoal grills offer as a standard. This is the grill you get to show off a bit, and keeps your hands clean. A downside: compared to most brands in this guide, Everdure has very few stockists, which means it may be tough to get hands-on with one before dropping two grand.

Does Toyota’s Mysterious Trademark Mean Trouble for Ford and Jeep?

Toyota had very fair reasons for discontinuing the FJ Cruiser SUV back in 2014. The 4Runner and Tacoma both fill that midsize body-on-frame off-roader niche, after all — and both sell like crazy. Why bother with another one?

But one could make a case for that calculus changing. Used FJ Cruisers in good condition go for nearly as much as new ones did; Jeep continues to make hay while the sun shines on the Wrangler; the Ford Bronco netted nearly 200,000 reservations, and the Hummer is returning. Maybe there’s room for an FJ Cruiser replacement — perhaps along the lines of Toyota’s super-cool FT-4X concept from 2017 (seen above)?

Well, Toyota seems to have just tossed some gasoline on the smoldering fire of hope for a new off-road vehicle: the carmaker has filed a trademark application for “Trailhunter” in the United States under the category “automobiles and structural parts thereof.”

Trail implies some form of an off-road vehicle, and the name Toyota Trailhunter really rolls off the tongue, making it easy to that could easily be a plausible FJ Cruiser replacement.

Of course, this name doesn’t have to apply to an off-road vehicle. Indeed, as fun as it is to fantasize about the prospect, we suspect it’s not a new standalone off-roader. Toyota has a clear track record, particularly in the off-road truck and SUV space, of only acting when needed — and despite having the oldest truck in a hyper-competitive midsize truck segment, Toyota sold more Tacomas than Corollas in 2020. The 4Runner still held its own in the top 25 vehicles too. New versions of both will arrive in the next few years. Why mess with that?

The best vehicular bet for Trailhunter might be another three-row SUV, as people can’t get enough of those. (Then again, Toyota also trademarked “Grand Highlander” earlier this year for a big crossover.)

Realistically, then, Trailhunter seems most likely to apply to a new trim level. But Toyota already has rugged TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road trims for its off-roaders, not to mention the Trail trims; the market for yet another rock-crawling-focused variant seems saturated.

So, lacking any inside knowledge, if we were to guess where the name Trailhunter would fit in the lineup, it would be on something Toyota does need: a more rugged, active-lifestyle trim for the Highlander to fend off the upstart Kia Telluride, one that doesn’t need to go full TRD Pro.

This Historic Dive Watch Brand Is, Finally, Available in America Again

Back in the 1970s, you often had to buy dive watches in dive shops, rather than at jewelers or boutiques the way you can today. But as it turns out, one of the most famous dive watch makers, Doxa, has been largely absent from many U.S shops since then.

Until now, at least. Coinciding with the launch of new forged carbon-cased collection of its famously brightly colored dive watches, Doxa is returning Stateside via the retailer Watches of Switzerland.

Granted, it’s not as if you couldn’t get a Doxa in the United States before now— far from it. Doxa was one of the brands that pioneered online sales long before it caught on in the industry (only quite recently, we might add) thanks to horological entrepreneur Rick Marei. Since the brand revived its Sub 300 series of distinctive and colorful watches in the 1990s, it’s had a presence in the minds and on the wrists of many Americans. It’s just that it wasn’t easy to simply go into a store to see it in person before buying.

So what will you see if you walk into a Watches of Switzerland store and stroll over to the Doxa counter? A lot of bright-colored dials and straps, to be sure — but among them will be the newest models featuring the iconic Turtle-like case shape and no-decompression scale bezel executed in a forged carbon material. Carbon (of the forged, fiber, composite or other varieties) has been a popular alternative material in watchmaking for its dark color, its potentially interesting textures and patterns — and most of all, its lightness and toughness.

submariner

Courtesy

submariner

Aesthetically, the look provides an interesting contrast to the brand’s signature range of bold colors and lends the vintage-inspired watch a resolutely more contemporary feel; ergonomically, carbon cases should make the Sub 300’s 42.5mm case even more comfortable to wear. Like the steel models, the Sub 300 Carbon is water resistant to 300m and is powered by a COSC chronometer-certified ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. The new watches join the permanent collection following a special 2020 limited edition in carbon called the SUB 300 Aqua Lung US Divers.

The thing about carbon, though, is that as an alternative material, it’s also exotic and costs a premium — which means that the new Sub 300 Carbon watches will be priced over a thousand dollars more than their steel counterparts, at $3,890. The new models come in the brand’s six dial colors and ten total variations with different strap options. You might want to go check them out at your local Watches of Switzerland location…but of course, they’re also available online, as always.

Scuba Diving with Three Vintage Rolex Submariner Watches

Welcome to Deep Dive, in which we test dive watches both new and vintage beneath the waves in some of the world’s most beautiful locations. This time, we’re in Grand Cayman in the Caribbean with three vintage Rolex Submariners.

Behold the overpowered and unruly 1977 Porsche 911 Targa SC, now garaged, gathering dust along with market value. Behold the 1957 Fender Stratocaster that once rang like a bell, now condemned to silence under a halogen spotlight in a humidity-controlled man-cave. Behold the perfectly faded 1971 Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 with its iconic red text, now motionless in a pitch-black safe. Alarms, combination locks, insurance riders, and — more than anything — fear, reduce these masterpieces of human ingenuity to mere investments.

When monetary value skyrockets, we can lose sight of the other values that an object might afford us. There’s aesthetic value, so easily diminished to frivolity when cast in the shadow of profitability. But how sad is the silent Strat? There’s experiential value, that ineffable high of using an exceptional tool, insufferably cut short in the name of preservation. How sad a Porsche whose rear end will never drift again? And then there’s inspirational value, the sway of objects whose purposefulness is a call to action. How sad a Rolex dive watch that will never inspire another underwater adventure?

Three-Vintage-Rolex-Submariners-gear-patrol-ambience-1

Aesthetic, experiential, and inspirational value are subjective experiences — joys, if you will — and, as such, those values are impossible to quantify. Yet for some folks the joy of actually using expensive vintage things is the only justification for their high price tags. These folks will happily wear down the frets on that Strat. They’ll grin as they drift the rear end of that vintage Porsche. And they’ll experience something akin to time-travel as they submerge that perfectly faded Rolex Sub.

Aesthetic, experiential, and inspirational value are subjective — joys, if you will — and, as such, those values are impossible to quantify.

Joy is exactly what three vintage Rolex Submariners exuded to everyone who got to see them at work under the surface at the East End of Grand Cayman in the Caribbean. The risk of submerging these three watches was that they might leak. Saltwater would destroy their perfectly faded dials and totally screw up their movements, thus diminishing their monetary value many-fold. But the risk of a leak only amplified the joy of diving with these watches. And diving with them, in turn, amplified how perfectly capable they still are after so many decades — provided, of course, that their seals are properly maintained and pressure tested.

Three-Vintage-Rolex-Submariners-gear-patrol-ambience-2

We chose this specific trio to help elucidate some of the key differences between vintage Subs. By no means is this an exhaustive look at vintage Rolex Submariners, but these three examples do provide an informative glimpse into the arcane niche of collecting vintage models.

The watches we submerged include two no-date reference 5513s: a rather pristine example from 1968 and another super clean variant from 1989. The 5513 was produced from 1962-1989, and saw a number of small changes over that time. The most notable differences (though not the only ones) between the two examples we dove with are that the 1968 5513 has a matte dial with unadorned lume plots (a dollop of luminescent material) for markers, while the 1989 5513 has a glossy black dial and white gold surround around the markers. For those seeking the look of the older example, look for one made between 1962 and 1981, and for those who prefer the updated look of the newer version, seek out one made between 1982 and 1989. Functionally, the two are identical, and in action at depth the differences were hardly noticeable.

The third watch we dove with is a gorgeously sun-burned 1971 reference 1680 Submariner, dubbed by modern collectors a “Red Sub.” Produced from 1969-1975, and the first to include a date complication, many consider the Red Sub to be the ultimate Rolex dive watch. Why that red line of text sends chills up the spines of otherwise rational men remains a mystery, but other brands endlessly imitate it in a bid for that strange affection. [Editor’s Note: the 1680 “Red Sub” was eventually replaced with a version with all-white text, also a reference 1680.] The smooth patina on the particular example we had in hand, as well as its overall excellent condition, drives its price well north of $30,000.

Three-Vintage-Rolex-Submariners-gear-patrol-ambience-3

This 1680’s bezel is now a steely blue, its tritium lume a creamy French vanilla, its dial a soft charcoal gray, its red text bold and bright. It’s price tag may be impressive, but this watch’s aesthetic, experiential, and inspirational values are off the chart. Above water it’s the picture of perfect patina, and below water it exhibits timing capabilities and legibility that make you wonder how far we’ve really come in the 49 years since this watch went home with its first owner in 1971.

Yet, no matter how capable and wonderful these old Subs are, no one is going to forego their digital dive computer in favor of them, and anyone who puts stock in the practical value of these Subs is overlooking the real reason to celebrate these objects: namely, their ability to remind us of the hopeful spirit and ingenuity of the 20th Century. WWII was over, and the world sighed a collective relief and set its sights on the future. In just a few decades, we went on to explore space, fly supersonic jets commercially, and deepen our knowledge of the oceans at an unfathomably fast pace, as pioneers like Jaques Cousteau and Sylvia Earle mastered SCUBA and underwater photography. These accomplishments sprung from utopian aspirations, and the hope embodied in the tools of that era — these old Rolexes included — is palpable and deeply compelling.

Anyone who puts stock in the practical value of these Subs is overlooking the real reason to celebrate these objects: namely, their ability to remind us of the hopeful spirit and ingenuity of the 20th Century.

Three-Vintage-Rolex-Submariners-gear-patrol-ambience-4

More than one person expressed jittery reservations about our taking these three Submariners underwater, fearing they’d leak, fearing that leaks would ruin them, and fearing that, once ruined, they’d lose their monetary value. “What’s the point?” asked one concerned bystander. What is there to say to such fears when it comes to devices that were built to enable a nascent and dangerous new sport called SCUBA diving? What is there to say to such fear when modern technology has put real buffers between us and real danger? What is there to say, other than that such fears are nothing compared to the joy of having taken the risk and come out the other side with a dry watch, a new story to tell, and a glimmer of hope? That, dear readers, is priceless.

Bob’s Watches provided all three watches for use in this piece.

Uniqlo’s Wildly Popular Face Masks Just Got an Update (and New Colors)

I would be willing to venture a guess that you, dear reader, are just as tired of thinking about this ongoing pandemic as I am. I get that! I really do. So I’d understand if you told me that buying a new mask isn’t at the top of your list of things to do today. You want to spend less time dealing with the issue, after all. Understandable! But allow me to offer up an alternate way of thinking about things: If you are one of the many, many people possessed of a subpar mask collection, getting a three-pack (or two) of really good ones will save you a great deal of mental effort in the long run.

Consider how much time and energy goes into wearing a bad mask. The constant back-and-forth of slipping and readjusting. The fogging of glasses. The uncomfortable tugging at the ears. It’s frustrating — and unnecessary. Just ditch the Bad Masks and stock up on some good ones. We’ve got a whole list of options for you, but if you don’t feel like scrolling through it, just click on over to Uniqlo and get some of their newly — and colorfully! — redesigned AIRism masks.

An update on an already-popular style, these new masks use a triple-layer construction with a built-in non-woven filter and a swath of that all-important AIRism fabric — soft, silky, and breathable as it is — that sits against the skin. The ear straps (which were perfectly fine on the first generation of masks in my experience) have been redone to be stretchier and even more comfortable. And the stitching and seaming, which previously had a tendency to pucker up and lose their shape a bit, are now smoother and sleeker, so the mask fits better on your face for longer stretches. Oh, and in addition to black and white, you can now take your pick of navy, brown, and blue colorways.

AIRism Mask (Pack of 3)

Uniqlo

$14.90

All in all, what Uniqlo did was take something that was already good and make it that much better. It’s not exactly a groundbreaking concept in product design, but when you’re talking about an affordable three-pack of easily accessible masks to see us all through what are hopefully the last days of this pandemic, it’s a welcome one, nonetheless.

Save Up to 60% on Great Furniture at Wayfair’s 72-Hour Sale

Looking for even more great savings? Subscribe to our daily newsletter Today’s Best Deals and have them sent straight to your inbox.

Looking to update your home but don’t want to spend a fortune on furnishings? Well, you’re in luck. Right now Wayfair, everyone’s favorite online discount furniture warehouse, is running some deals with discounts of up to 60% off. From patio furniture to tables to home office equipment — everything’s discounted. (Wayfair also owns and operates Joss & Main, AllModern and Birch Lane, many of which are also running sales right now.)

Wayfair’s pricing is dynamic, meaning MSRP is rarely the actual list price of an item, and thus “sale” prices are actually more in line with the prices you’d pay at other retailers. (Many retailers, including Amazon, engage in this practice.) However, this doesn’t mean you aren’t getting a great deal on a design that would otherwise cost you much more money from a different retailer.

Here are some of our favorite pieces that are on sale — check out Wayfair.com for the entire selection.
