The Simple Trick to Make Your Smart Speakers Sound Way Better

Welcome to Product Support, a column devoted to helping you get the most out of the stuff you already use.

By themselves, most smart speakers are only able to play mono sound, as opposed to stereo sound, because they have one driver and can only playback audio through one channel. This is the case with all the popular (and affordable) smart speakers, such as the Amazon Echo ($99), Nest Audio ($99), HomePod mini ($99) and Sonos One ($199). But for much better sound, all it takes is a pair.

Basically every affordable smart speaker can be paired with a twin to play audio in stereo, which vastly improves the quality of sound. It takes seconds and once done, your speakers will automatically play stereo audio; all the the big streaming services are able to play stereo audio because, after-all, that’s how the tracks were originally recorded.

Mono has its advantages. It gives you an even sound throughout the whole room. This means that no matter where you’re standing in relation to the speaker, you should hear pretty much the same audio.

Stereo is the audio format that artists use when recording their albums, and it gives the listener a sense of space as it relates to where the band, singers and all the instrumentals are playing while on stage. This “stereo effect” is created because the left and right channels (or left and right speakers) are able to play different audio, which helps the audio sound more grandiose and, ultimately, more accurate.

If you’ve got two of the same speaker, it’s definitely worth a try. And if you were looking for an excuse to pick up a second, this is all you need.

Tiffany & Co. Abandons the Band, Launches Men’s Engagement Rings

“Enter the men’s jewelry renaissance,” writes GQ staffer Samuel Hine in a piece bearing the same name. He argues, and we’d agree, jewelry is all over. No, it’s not a new thing by any means; men have long worn jewelry, it’s just that now the out-of-bounds lines seem eternally blurred. Men, as they should be, seem free to wear what they’d like: pearl necklaces, hoop earrings, bulky, braided bracelets, and now, a la Tiffany & Co.’s new men’s collection, diamond-clad engagement rings.

Tiffany’s first five diamond engagement rings designed for men — called the Charles Tiffany Setting Collection — are set to debut this month at the LVMH-owned label’s flagship stores. (They’re already available online, but orders must go through the company’s central customer service team.) The name derives from its founder’s ingenious 1886 invention, the first-ever women’s solitaire diamond engagement ring (aka the Tiffany Setting). 135 years later, the jeweler announces the all-new line rooted in “love and inclusivity.” It’s, according to a release, an attempt at “paving the way for new traditions to celebrate our unique love stories and honor our most cherished commitments to one another.”

Whether to cater to the interests of same-sex and non-binary couples or to appease the growing number of men interested in wearable adornments, this is surely a first and smaller makers are bound to follow. Could we see a consensus shift from simpler bands to more extravagant statement pieces? Probably not. Will more men entertain the idea? Absolutely.

All six iterations boast a diamond set in the center. Available options are the round brilliant and emerald-cut in up to five carats. On the former, the diamond is offset by a streamlined knife-edge band. For the latter, it’s situated on a band with beveled edges. A certificate detailing the diamond’s origin, place of cut and polish, grade and quality assurance will be available at purchase. Pricing, which varies depending on cut, size and carat, begins at $19,000 and rises as high as $300,000.

What makes it super unique is that uses face tracking (via Belkin’s companion app) and a 360-degree rotating base so that your iPhone’s camera can follow you as you walk around your room; it’s feels similar to what the Amazon’s new Echo Show 10 can do with its own rotating base. It seems like the ideal little gadget for people making videos on TikTok or YouTube, however, it won’t work with certain video calling apps, such as FaceTime or Zoom.

They have less premium builds and generally not-as-great camera systems, but they actually don’t skimp out on that many flagship-level features. The three new Galaxy A smartphones that you should know about are: the Galaxy A32 5G ($280), the Galaxy A42 5G ($400) and the Galaxy A52 5G ($400). London-based fashion search engine Lyst, in case you’re unfamiliar, boasts more than 70 million users worldwide. As such, they tally more than 10 million unique searches each month—from the newest Prada bucket hat to Patagonia’s freshest fleece. The company leverages these insights — as well as social media searches, mentions and engagements, Google search data and sales — for quarterly reports they call the “Lyst Index.” In other words, the rankings of the most searched items, the most talked-about brands and trends they see sweeping out of focus and washing ashore.

The index’s Q1 2021 Hottest Brands List proves dominated by luxury labels, sportswear legends and hyped-up houses: Gucci, Nike, Dior, Balenciaga, Moncler, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent and Off-White round out the top 10. Each earned their respective ranking through high-budget digital marketing campaigns or upticks (in the case of Nike) in online sales.

However, the Hottest Products list tells a different story. While the “hottest” product of the year thus far is the YEEZY 450 Sneaker — which looks like a tote bag bred with a dumpling — four out of the other nine are Gorpcore garments and gear: Arc’teryx’s Beta AR Jacket, Patagonia’s Classic Retro-X Fleece Jacket, Salomon’s XT-Wings 2 Advanced Sneakers and Burton’s Edgecomb Jacket (popularized by Bernie Sanders at this year’s inauguration). “Searches rose 96 percent for the Burton brand overall,” Lyst reports.

Other entries include Moncler’s Gui Vest, Prada’s Logo Bucket Hat, Nike’s University Blue Dunk Lows, a Brunello Cucinelli Button-Down Denim Shirt and a bright pink sneaker by Rick Owens.

In years prior, we might’ve anticipated utter dominance by streetwear staples like Supreme or storied haute icons like Hermés. However, this upheaval points towards the pandemic trend of buying for functionality, a newfound (and renewed) adoration for the outdoors, the overlap of Gorpcore and designer goods and the accessibility of most outdoor apparel. All the Coolest Home and Design Releases We Found in April 2021

This year, April showered us with a plethora of home and design releases — and oddly, only one of those releases had to do with 4/20.

Besides grow-your-own-weed kits, we got a plunger (yes, a plunger) that actually doubles as home decor, new bakeware from Made In courtesy of Nancy Silverton and a standing desk that actually fits in tight quarters.

My favorite release, though? The new knife brand Steelport. It’s a pricey kitchen toy, but it was the sharpest thing I saw all month.

Steelport 8-Inch Carbon Steel Chef Knife

            knife

            Steelport

Most American kitchens are tricked out with stainless steel knives. Here’s a thought: go high-carbon steel. It’s sharp as hell, and it’s what most of the pros use in their day to day. Since 2007, Eytan Zias has been running The Knife House in Portland, Oregon. Now he’s getting into the knife-making world with his new brand Steelport, which launched in March with a $400 8-inch chef knife.

What’s with the high price tag? It’s a full-tang knife with 65 HRC carbon steel, which means it’s extra sharp and durable. The knife’s design is meant to encourage a pinch grip, the best way to hold a knife. As a sign of respect to the state it’s made in, the handle is made of Oregon bigleaf maple. And remember, this is not stainless steel, so don’t let this knife stay wet for long and always dry by hand. Bob Kramer, looks like you’ve got some competition.

            Brightland Digestif Kitchen Candle

            candle

            Jill Burrows

Our favorite cult-ish olive oil brand, Brightland, loves a good digestif (what you drink after a meal to help you digest). Unusually, though, Brightland’s stab at a digestif isn’t an alcoholic beverage — it’s a candle. Meant to be lit after a meal to refresh your kitchen and not your stomach, Digestif is aromatherapy at its finest, especially for the company’s founder.

“The Brightland Digestif kitchen candle is extra special to me because of its fragrance notes and what they mean to me: Vetiver is a plant native to South India, and so Digestif’s vetiver and black pepper notes immediately take me to my grandparents’ home in South India,” Brightland founder and CEO Aishwarya Iyer says. “The orange blossom and neroli notes remind me of California’s gorgeous natural bounty, so I feel like a part of my heritage, history and personal story is poured into each candle.”

The candles are made in collaboration with Los Angeles-based sustainable candle company Flores Lane, and it’s made with Brightland’s very own olive oil.

We’re constantly raving about carbon steel as a better alternative to cast iron. Carbon steel is lighter and more maneuverable than its heavy counterpart, and it’s just as naturally non-stick, with the ability to reach screaming hot temperatures. Millennial favorite brand Five Two, the in-house cooking brand of food publication Food52, just made its new carbon steel wok available for pre-order.

The pan comes with a lid and steamer rack, which also doubles as a deep-fried food ledge to let excess grease drip. Now you can finally nail those stir-fries that never seemed to taste like what you get from takeout.

Staff, a new Brooklyn-based home goods brand, wants to give you that better-looking plunger, and it also pays homage to founder Charlie Weisman’s grandfather who was a plumber.

The brand’s take on the tool is made with a brightly colored acrylic handle adorned with a smiley face and an inoffensive matte black rubber cup. It’s weird to be hyping up a plunger, but I’ll take whatever joy I can get this year.

Enter to Win a Porsche Taycan Turbo S, Help People in Need

Porsche’s most iconic car is the 911, but Porsche’s most futuristic — and arguably most impressive — new car on sale today is the Taycan Turbo S, the range-topper for the brand’s new fleet of electric cars. The Taycan Turbo S delivers 616 horsepower under normal conditions, and up to 750 horsepower and 774 lb-ft of torque with “overboost” activated; it can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 2.6 seconds using launch control and hit a top speed of 161 mph.

And it does all that without using a drop of gas in a car you can take multiple kids to school in comfortably. How impressive is the Taycan Turbo S? Porsche unabashedly describes the car as a “sedan” on its website.

The knock on the Taycan Turbo S is its range, which the EPA rates for just 201 miles. But real-world testing showed the car comes far closer to the Tesla Model S] than the EPA numbers suggest. Even if you take the 201 miles at face value, that’s still more than enough to cover most suburban driving.

If you want to win a Porsche Taycan Turbo S and help out a great cause, you can enter this Omaze sweepstakes to benefit the GEANCO Foundation. Every donation supports their work on health and education initiatives in Nigeria. GEANCO Foundation activities include surgical missions, maternal and infant health programs, supplying schools and providing scholarships for young women who are victims of terrorism and gender inequality.

And bcause the Taycan Turbo S isn’t not quite enough all by itself, we should also note the grand prize includes an additional $20,000 cash and an additional payment to help offset taxes related to the car.

The Little Car Company x Tamiya Wild One MAX is a driveable replica of the R/C car

The awesome truth is, we don’t really outgrow the stuff we enjoyed as kids, especially our favorite toys. Aside from action figures, scale models of vehicles were huge back in the day. Those into R/C cars in the 80’s are in for a treat when they see The Little Car Company x Tamiya Wild One MAX. This time, both kids and adults can actually drive an 8:10 replica.

In 2012, the Japanese company reissued the 1:10 scale Wild One to the delight of collectors. Probably after its encouraging turnout, its executives set their sights on something even bigger. The Little Car Company x Tamiya Wild One MAX is not due to be out until 2022, but preorders are now open.

It’s not yet final, but the approximate cost of this compact driveable machine is approximately a little over $8,000. The Little Car Company x Tamiya Wild One MAX measures 137.8 inches long and 70.8 inches wide. This small buggy tips the scales at 551 lbs and can fit both kids and adults thanks to its adjustable seat.

More like an all-electric ATV, this off-road-ready junior car can handle rough patches. The spaceframe chassis is formidable against jumps and bumps with the help of its coil-over suspension and 15-inch all-terrain tires. Dependable stopping power comes from the Brembo brake system.

Inside the cockpit are digital instruments, a three-point harness, and a race-ready steering wheel. The Little Car Company x Tamiya Wild One MAX can hit a top speed of 30 mph and a max range of 25 miles on a full charge. Optional upgrades will be available down the line to boost performance and conform to regulations so you can drive it on public roads.

This pedal-powered contraption is apparently an electric bike with unique capabilities.

The problem with regular bicycles is the limited cargo space. Sure a backpack is a convenient solution, but it does not allow you to haul bigger items. Another option would be a bike trailer, but CW&T likes to think outside the box.

Therefore, they’ve come up with a mechanical chimera of sorts, which we now know as the Penny Pelican. Hey, it might look like someone just cobbled some spare parts and slapped them on one of the toughest equipment containers known to man.

It’s funny because a huge section of the electric bike is actually a Pelican Hardigg transport case. The size of the military-grade cargo box can fit up to two people (awkwardly we suppose). On the rear is a freewheel hub with pedals. This drops the need for a gear and chain assembly.

Meanwhile, the front wheel houses a 1,000W electric motor with enough power to push the Penny Pelican up to speeds of 23 miles per hour. Using muscle power alone when there’s something heavy aboard is not our idea of fun. Thankfully, we can let the batteries help out in these situations.

Please note that its odd configuration means pedal power can only take you up to 4 mph, which is embarrassing. As such, just take advantage of the electric motor and save your stamina for an emergency. When you need to park and take a breather, just deploy the double-leg kickstand to keep the Penny Pelican electric bike upright.

The Best Roadside Emergency Kits You Can Buy

            road trip

            Christoph MartinGetty Images

Look, we get it. It’s 2021: you carry a smartphone with you at all times, and you have both an AAA membership and the app. In most situations, that will be the most important tool in your arsenal in getting you out of whatever roadside jam you find yourself in.

But it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan — especially if you’re planning a long highway drive, leaving the pavement, encounter inclement weather frequently or don’t want to entrust matters to your not-so-reliable cell service provider. In other words, you should have a roadside emergency kit.

In a perfect world, money wouldn’t be an issue, and you’d have ample time to research the best jumper cables, best portable jump starter, best tire repair kit, best portable air compressor, best tool kit, best flares, best portable shovel, and best heat blanket to build out your own optimal roadside emergency kit. But most of us, well, have other things to do — so the best option for most people is a simple pre-assembled roadside assistance kit that ou toss in the trunk and hope you never need.

What do you need for a roadside emergency kit? It depends on your circumstances. Everyone will want basic tools for repairing tires, jump-starting a dead battery and alerting other cars to your presence, particularly at night. If you live somewhere like Vermont or Minnesota, you probably want to pack a shovel and winter gear. The New Chevy Corvette Z06 May Hit the Production Line Soon

The all-new C8-generation Chevrolet Corvette Stringray has been out for a while now (and racking up awards. Next up for launch should be the Z06 version. It’s expected to feature a 5.5-liter naturally aspirated flat-plane V8 derived from Corvette’s C8.R race car, with what could be a world-record amount of power for that sort of motor —think more than 600 horsepower. Now, the latest rumors have suggested the Z06 may be moving significantly closer to production in the coming weeks.

As spotted by CarBuzz, a co-founder and admin of the messageboard Mid-Engine Corvette Forum recently posted that Chevy would be soon inserting Corvette Z06 N50s into the production line alongside 2021 Stingrays at GM’s Bowling Green Assembly plant. The “N” is for the 2022 model year, and the “50” means they are pre-production prototypes, which would then be used for a final round of testing.

The post notes that one of the factors being tested will be how the line handles the Z06’s widebody design. Reportedly, it boasts side scoops about 5/8 of an inch wider than the Stingray, thus making it at least 1.25 inches wider in total than the base car The source for the post described the look as “exciting.”

GM had to delay several upcoming vehicles, including the Corvette Z06, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A reported leak from earlier this year suggested GM was lining up a summer reveal for the 2022 Corvette Z06 by July at the latest, which would line up with a delay of about six months we saw with other vehicles.

Of course, as those excited for the Ford Bronco will understand, a reveal does not necessarily mean the new vehicle is imminent. The Corvette Z06 may not hit dealers until late 2020 or early 2021.
