The 9 Best Sandals for Hiking in 2021

Our definitive guide to the best hiking sandals available provides information on the nine top hiking sandals and offers tips on what to consider before buying a pair. In it, we break down each sandal’s key features, covering elements such as comfort, strap design, support, materials, weight and more.

More Great Hiking Sandals

A lot is implied by the word sandal. Upon hearing it, one might conjure up an image of footwear made of leather and cork loosely affixed to a pair of worn feet stemming from a guitar-toting, shower-averse long-haired hippy. That picture would stereotype both man and shoe, though.

Sandals have their place outside of cultural generalizations — in rafts, for one. Teva, one of the most highly-regarded makers of outdoor sandals, got its start in 1984 when Mark Thatcher, a river guide in the Grand Canyon, used two Velcro watch straps to modify a pair of flip-flops so they wouldn’t come off his feet.

The outdoor sandals available today are more robust than that — in fact, they’re about as beefy as can be without losing the light and open qualities that make them great in the first place. Sticky rubber soles with heavy lugs, platforms molded for arch support and anti-blister constructions are just some of the traits that make the best outdoor sandals suitable for use beyond boats and water. Hike in them, bike in them, climb in them — these sandals are built to go everywhere.

    Chaco Z/Volv 2

    Courtesy

    Chaco Z/Volv 2

    Chaco chacos.com

    $95.00

Chaco’s most iconic sandal is also one of the most polarizing, largely due to the unique loop that helps secure the big toe. People either hate it or love it; we find that it provides the extra bit of leverage that’s useful when scrambling up trails and over rocks. The Z/Volv 2 is similar in that way, though Chaco shaved off 20 percent of its weight by using a different rubber compound. It’s a welcome change given that the original can often feel clunky and especially because the super-supportive footbed is still in place.

If you already love Chacos, you’ll like the Z/Volv even better. If you’re new to Chacos, note that the strap adjustment process is a bit tricky (again, some hate it), but plenty supportive. Another thing to note is that the strap is too long if you have small feet and need to crank it down, but you can always cut it back and burn the end if it’s annoying. And if you hate the thought of that big toe loop, the Z/Volv comes in a version without it.

    Bedrock Cairn 3D Adventure Sandals

    Courtesy

Bedrock Sandals Cairn 3D PRO II

    Bedrock Sandals bedrocksandals.com

    $130.00

Bedrock felt that even traditional sandals were too constraining, so it reworked the strap layout into a design that’s something of a hybrid between a flip-flop and Tevas. The paracord thong uses an aluminum insert for durability (this is usually the first thing to go on normal flip-flops), and an adjustable heel cuff provides rear foot stability. In this updated version, Bedrock added a hook adjustment to the heel for even greater support than the original, which helps this sandal feel a lot beefier than it is (it weighs 10.5 ounces per sandal).

The Cairn 3D features a contoured footbed for additional comfort and a Vibram outsole for the best possible grip. If it looks too minimal for long adventures, know that it isn’t — the company’s chief experience officer, Naresh Kumar, hiked New Zealand’s 3,000-kilometer Te Araroa trail in a pair.

    Teva Hurricane XLT 2

    Courtesy

    Teva Hurricane XLT2

    Teva zappos.com

    $55.95

Teva’s classic Velcro sandal is still the gold standard adventure sandal when you don’t want to spend a bundle. For a little extra cash though, you can get the Hurricane XLT2, which is just an all-terrain version of the simpler one you might’ve worn as a kid. It still has downsides — mainly its triangular plastic strap connectors, which can be uncomfortable —but the primary upgrades are a thicker, contoured sole and a grippy outsole that make walking on dirt, gravel, riverbeds, etc. a lot more manageable.

    Keen Newport Hydro

    Courtesy

    Keen Newport Hydro

    Keen keenfootwear.com

    $110.00

Many of Keen’s sandals walk a fine line between sandal and shoe, and the Newport Hydro does it expertly. It’s open everywhere except the toe, which makes it perfect for wear during aquatic activities when underwater rocks can become especially hazardous to toes. Its washable webbing exterior is backed with a comfy PFC-free, quick-drying lining. The sole has tread enough for hiking on dry land, too, and is supported by a light shank for additional support.

    Teva Terra Fi 5 Universal

    Courtesy

    Teva Terra Fi 5 Universal

    Teva zappos.com

    $99.95

If you like Tevas but want a more rugged model than our budget pick, check out the Terra Fi 5 Universal, which sports a few crucial upgrades that make it great for heavier all-around outdoor use. For one, it features a thick, molded PU midsole that provides support on uneven ground and protection from jagged terrain as well as a sticky rubber outsole with lugs for traction. The Terra Fi 5 Universal also has additional padding at points of high abrasion where the straps meet the sole and where plastic parts are, which helps avoid blisters.

    ECCO Sport Yucatan

    Courtesy

    ECCO Sport Yucatan

    ECCO Sport zappos.com

    $134.95

ECCO packed so much support and comfort into the Yucatan, it wears more like a shoe with oversized vents than a sandal. The entire strap structure is lined with neoprene to make this sandal super comfortable and eliminate chafing in places you’d expect to find it on other models. The midsole is thick and supportive, and has a lining that makes it a lot softer than other sandals in the category too (again, it’s kind of like a shoe in this way). Made with leather, the Yucatan is a chunkier sandal and doesn’t have that traditional outdoorsy look, and it’s also more expensive than our other picks.

    Xero Shoes Z-Trail EV

    Courtesy

    Xero Shoes Z-Trail EV

    Xero Shoes zappos.com

    $79.99

Weighing in at a scant 5.4 ounces, the Z-Trail EV is as light as a hiking sandal gets. It eschews thick straps, extra padding and oversized buckles but it drops most of its weight by using a super-thin 10-millimeter sole. Nevertheless, the sole still comes with the hallmarks of a hiking sandal, including a foam footbed and lugged outsole. Keep in mind that there’s little between your foot and the ground though, so expect to feel rocks even if they can’t pierce through these layers. The Z-Trail EV is best for shorter hikes and water activities, or people who want a protected barefoot walking feel.

    Freewaters Trifecta

    Courtesy

    Freewaters Trifecta

    Freewaters zappos.com

    $59.95

Flip-flops are great for casual wear but, for all their wonderful qualities, are not great adventure sandals; they’re too minimal and often quite breakable. But leaving the heel free to breath is nice (and prevents abrasion to one of the foot’s most blister-prone areas). Freewaters approached the zero-sum situation by axing the heel piece and leaving a Velcro strap over the top of the foot. It also included a soft foam platform and a supportive arch. We’ve found that it’s not as ideal for hiking as others on this list, but is perfect for short-range adventures and everyday use that you’d typically choose a flip-flop for.

    Chaco Odyssey Sandal

    Courtesy

    Chaco Odyssey Sandal

    Chaco chacos.com

    $100.00

One of Chaco’s more recent releases, the Odyssey is part sandal, part hiking shoe, part Nike Flyknit. It’s a water shoe that’s ideal for rafting and wading, but its rugged sole can handle hiking trails, too — one Gear Patrol contributor experienced just how well it handles both during a packrafting trip in Alaska’s Kennicott Wilderness. Plus, the extra coverage provided by the mesh upper and toe overlays adds protection without sacrificing one of the best things about wearing sandals: breathability. The only con with this sandal is that the extra material that protects the toe and brings added support can become a trap for debris, though it’s easy enough to shake that stuff out.

Porsche Will Build Anyone a One-Off Dream Car, Whether You’re Jerry Seinfeld or Not

A lot of people are willing to pay a lot of money for custom, resto-modded Porsches. It’s popular to the point that companies that build vintage Porsches, like Singer, have become name brands themselves. Now, Porsche plans to get in on the act themselves: Porsche Classic and Porsche’s Exclusive Manufaktur are expanding their offerings with a new Sonderwunsch (Special Request) program that will let customers beyond than the likes of Jerry Seinfeld build the bespoke, one-off Porsches of their dreams…provided those dreams are at least somewhat reasonable.

Porsche says customers will serve as a “project manager” working with a team of experts. The program will allow buyers to modify exterior paint, interior upholstery and detailing completely. They will also be able to swap powertrains and suspension components with necessary body modifications. So, theoretically, you could take your bedroom wall poster 911 from the 1980s, swap in modern componentry and go nuts with luxury materials on the interior.

porsche logo

Porsche

As when finding a genie in the lamp, there are some limitations. The project has to be technically feasible; it also has to be safe and legal. Porsche won’t copy features from other brands, and they won’t reproduce limited run Porsches if you had designs on being the third owner of a factory 993-generation speedster. And they aren’t doing EV conversions for their classic lineup (maybe because that will come in the future?).

According to Car and Driver, Porsche plans to start building 3–5 projects this year — and two are already underway. The one-off cars can take up to four years, with the most complex projects requiring a year of ideation followed by a two-to-three-year build process. Costs can exceed $100,000, depending on the project.

If you don’t need the full rest-mod treatment, Porsche Classic does performance parts and upgrades as well as factory restorations. And they are also exploring offering off-road packages for first-generation Cayennes, if you were concerned those were getting too cheap.

These Impressive Grand Seiko GMT Watches Will Make You a Convert to Quartz

If you’re one of the many watch enthusiasts who tends to look down on analog quartz watches, Grand Seiko wants to show you just how refined and high-end a quartz timepiece can be. The celebrated Japanese watchmaker has been doing this for a long time, after all, with its family of in-house 9F movements — and the latest of them powers a sporty GMT that’s likely to make you forget your snobbery for mechanical watches when you put it on your wrist.

Grand Seiko is best known for its dressy-leaning character, but the new watches live in its somewhat overlooked Sport collection. Though still sized for easy daily wear at 40mm in steel, some bright colors and 24-hour marked ceramic bezels inject sportiness and distinguish them from previous versions. They’ll feel even more action- and travel-ready when you know that they’re water-resistant to 200m.

grand seiko

Courtesy

They might be ruggedly built and quartz-powered, but these watches will hardly feel like “beaters” — instead, expect a high-end wearing experience. This comes from materials like sapphire crystal and ceramic, and you can expect the same ultra-sharp, ultra-high-end finishing found on all Grand Seiko watches, from the dial to the case. But we’re not only talking about a nice exterior hiding some run-of-the-mill quartz movement: the 9F is not only accurate to +/- 10 seconds per year, but designed and engineered with the same kind of Japanese fastidiousness as the brand’s mechanical and Spring Drive movements — that wobble of the seconds hand found on cheap quartz watches is here replaced with a solid, confident jump.

Neither are the new quartz GMT watches priced like beater watches. Two versions featuring black dials with red accents or sporty blue highlights will cost $4,550 while a limited edition of 2,021 examples marking the brand’s 140th anniversary has yellow highlights and a price of $5,450.

The 10 Best Hot Sauces to Spice Up Your Life

Everyone has a go-to hot sauce. And for some, their go-to is the only thing they’ll use. Tabasco over Valentina? Blasphemy! While having a preferred hot sauce is a personal thing, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t explore what other spicy condiments are at your disposal. We asked a bunch of chefs what their favorite spice bombs are, and we included a few of our own picks that deserve a place in your pantry, on your dining table or in your bag.

El Yucateco

Courtesy

Chile Habanero

El Yucateco amazon.com

$8.59

Thanks to its habanero base, El Yucateco is easily the fieriest of your everyday hot sauces. It was the second most vote-getting sauces among the chefs we spoke with, and they put it on whatever is in front of them. “I’m hooked, I put it on everything — pizza, tacos, macaroni and cheese — everything,” says Milwaukee-based Chef Dan Jacobs of DanDan, EsterEv and Fauntleroy. “It is an essential all-purpose condiment in my household.”

Big Red’s God’s Wrath Ghost Pepper Sauce

Courtesy

God’s Wrath Ghost Pepper Sauce

Big Reds bigredshotsauce.com

$8.00

Don’t let its name scare you away from trying it, because God’s Wrath is more like a gift from the spice gods. It’s blowing up sad leftover lunches like a flavor bomb in the mouth with habanero and the infamous ghost pepper. God’s Wrath also packs extra flavor with the additions of garlic and onion powders, rosemary, applewood-smoked seat salt and lemon juice concentrate.

Crystal Hot Sauce

Louisiana’s Pure Hot Sauce

Crystal amazon.com

$6.79

$5.89 (13% off)

One of two lines of Louisiana hot sauce royalty (the second comes later) is made with just three ingredients — salt, vinegar and aged cayenne peppers — but its popularity doesn’t end with simpletons. “If I were on a desert island and could only have one hot sauce it would be Crystal. You can use it just on greens, mix it with mayonnaise, it’s good on cheeseburgers, great on seafood. It’s just universal,” Atlanta chef Linton Hopkins of Holeman & Finch, Restaurant Eugene, C. Ellets and others said. “I love Tabasco on oysters. And for something like tacos, I love Cholula. But Crystal is the most universal.”

Hot Ones Los Calientes Rojo

Courtesy

Los Calientes Rojo

Hot Ones heatonist.com

$12.00

Hot Ones — yes, based off the web series of the same name — makes killer (not literally) hot sauces that you can eat at home. Los Calientes Rojo blends smoked red jalapeños, for sweetness and depth, with habanero, for hellish heat, as its base spicy profile. Then it gets treated with a mix of herbs, plus the unique addition of tart apricot, which lends its fruit flavor and color.

Shaquanda Hot Pepper Sauce

Courtesy

Hot Pepper Sauce

Shaquanda’s amazon.com

$14.95

This hot sauce pleases everyone from its hometown of Brooklyn to its roots in Barbados. Shaquanda’s hot pepper sauce is less about melting your face off and more about boosting whatever you’re eating with blast of flavor. Hot Pepper Sauce mixes scotch bonnets and habaneros with spices inspired by Barbados like ginger, turmeric and mustard. There’s also a bit of horseradish to clear your sinuses — better keep the tissues near you.

Valentina

Salsa Picante

Valentina amazon.com

$6.99

Chefs really, really like Valentina. Like any hot sauce nerd, chefs use it on everything (apparently, one even puts it and a squeeze of lemon on Flaming Hot Cheetos). But what sets it apart, according to its disciples, is the inclusion of flavors not often present in a cheap bottle of hot sauce. The consistency of this Mexican staple lies somewhere between your typical watery sauce and Sriracha, and it comes in hot or extra-hot.

Red Clay Original Hot Sauce

Courtesy

Original Hot Sauce

Red Clay redclayhotsauce.com

$9.00

South Carolina-based Red Clay takes your ordinary grocery store-aisle hot sauce and kicks it up to 11 — not in terms of heat, but flavor. Its base chili is a fresno chili, which has mild heat and sweet flavor, that’s mixed with white wine vinegar, then aged in bourbon barrels. This is the sort of hot sauce you put on anything and everything, turning whatever you put it on into a vessel for getting Red Clay into your mouth.

Tabasco

Original Flavor Pepper Sauce

Tabasco amazon.com

$6.82

The name is Mexican, the sauce isn’t. Tabasco is made with tabasco peppers grown on Avery Island, which is technically a salt dome. It’s probably the most popular hot sauce in the U.S. — it’s included in MREs and offered to astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The culinary director at Hill Country, Ash Fulk, puts it on everything, though he believes grits are the ideal companion. “It’s a sharp, vinegar snap and slightly fermented zippy sauce give a great platform for any dish without overpowering it,” he says.

Truff

Courtesy

Black Truffle-Infused Hot Sauce

Truff truff.com

$18.00

Truffle in things is an over-priced gimmick; truffle in Truff is not. This deeply savory hot sauce, made with actual black truffles, is perfectly spicy (as in hot) and perfectly spiced. This is the type of hot sauce that you get someone as a gift.

Hot Sloth CBD Hot Sauce

Courtesy

Hot Sloth CBD Hot Sauce

Pot d’Huile pdhcbd.com

$36.00

Hot Sloth is a hot sauce that burns the tongue and cools the mind. Former executive chef at Alinea, Mike Bagale, helped CBD olive oil brand Pot d’Huile come up with this neon-red hot sauce that packs major heat, thanks to a heavy-handed addition of habanero. But this thing isn’t all about the heat — it’s flavorful like you wouldn’t believe. Dragonfruit provides some of that bright color as well as some fruitiness; white miso paste and fermented plum bring the funk; and the CBD olive oil just rounds it all out.

The Best Apple AirTag Accessories for Your Pets

tech roundup

Nomad

Apple doesn’t recommend using AirTags for pet tracking because if your pet is really off the grid — in the woods or other remote area — that AirTag isn’t going to help, since it needs to be in the proximity of other devices in the Find My network which can relay its position.

But that AirTag will help you find your pet if it goes missing in suburbia or another well-populated area. Which is why a lot of people are still going to use AirTags for pet tracking.

Since AirTags were just recently released, there aren’t that many pet collars and other pet-specific accessories yet — but that’s going to change soon. In the meantime, here’s the what’s out there.

The Best Simple Home Theater Setups, 4 Ways

You don’t need an excuse like the Super Bowl to buy a new TV and speaker system. If you are looking to upgrade your current home theater, we’ve curated a number of great and easy-to-install setups for the Super Bowl, movies and beyond. Check out the three home theater systems we’ve curated, from affordable to fairly expensive, below.

The Affordable AV Receiver Setup

klipsch

Klipsch

Building a home theater may sound daunting, but don’t go thinking that you need to spend thousands of dollars on a 4K projector. Simply pair the TV with an AV receiver and loudspeakers — okay, throw in a subwoofer for good measure — and the fam will be the envy of the neighborhood. This setup (below) will work with any new 4K TV and you can actually add more speakers later on if you want a complete surround sound system.

The Roku Home Theater Setup

superbowl tv setups

Courtesy

This is a great entry-level setup for anybody who wants an excellent and affordable home theater system. The speakers and subwoofer are able to wirelessly connect to the TCL TV via Roku’s smart operating system. No need to worry about an AV receiver.

The Upgrade Home Theater Setup

superbowl tv setups

Courtesy

Consider this setup a nice little upgrade. The Vizio P-Series Quantum X is probably the best 4K LED TV that you can buy. Throw in a Sonos Beam, which is one of our favorite soundbars ( plus you can add a Sonos Sub if you want to create a more robust home theater system), and Google’s brand-new streaming stick and you’ve got a great home theater system for a medium-sized room.

The Dolby Atmos Home Theater Setup

superbowl tv setups

Courtesy

This is a pretty expensive — but not crazy expensive — home theater system. It’s first one that has an OLED TV rather than an LED TV, so you’re getting a noticeably better picture. Plus, it supports Dolby Atmos, which is a surround sound technology that’s vital for any cinema buff.

The Best Spot Treatments for One-Off Blemishes

It takes one pimple to ruin a good day. And luckily, it takes one good spot treatment to ruin a pimple.

Spot treatments are exactly what they sound like: one-off treatments that target individual pimples or blemishes as they arise; these can even include stubborn dark spots that refuse to disappear in the wake of a blemish.

Many acne-prone people use products that target the entire face, like a salicylic acid cleanser or serum, or an oil-free moisturizer to prevent clogging. These individuals are probably more cognizant of how each product can clog (or unclog) pores. But for anyone with a periodic pimple — or for acne-prone people who can usually keep the biggest, baddest ones at bay — every so often, there’s a blemish that simply refuses to stay quiet. You can feel it under there, stewing and steaming, or you wake up with it, practically ready to burst already. They’re sneaky like that. And what’s not sneaky is the open wound or active volcano they leave on your face.

That’s where the spot treatments come in handy. They can contain any variety of bacteria-fighting, pore-clearing, or complexion-brightening ingredients. Below is a roster of the best spot treatments, each with some unique way of disappearing, calming, or healing blemishes. You may want to stock up on a few of them, given the range of blemishes that can pop up at any time.

They are little stickers that you leave on for 6 hours or overnight (sometimes with microdarts to seep deep into a cystic pimple, sometimes flat-bottomed to focus on whiteheads). They soak up the oil and grime beneath the surface of the skin, and Mighty Patch sells one of the more affordable and more reliable patches in the game. They are discreet enough for daytime wear, and durable enough for day or night. Simply apply it to the spot (after cleansing), and after the 6-8-hour wait, you’ll have a less rabid pimple, with much of its goo now on the underside of the sticker. They’ll spare you any need to pop (and thus any week-long haunting / dark-spot agony after the acne is gone).

Best Upgrade Spot Treatment: First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Niacinamide Dark Spot Serum

Facial Radiance Niacinamide Dark Spot Serum

First Aid Beauty nordstrom.com

$42.00

This serum can be applied all over the face or can target specific dark spots and hyperpigmentation patches that just don’t want to turn over. You can expedite that cellular regeneration with First Aid Beauty’s blend of smoothing niacinamide and soothing allantoin. Both promote the production of healthy, new skin cells, and, if used all over, this serum also encourages long-term firmness and smoothness in the skin.

Best Budget Spot Treatment: Advanced Clinicals Tea Tree Oil

Courtesy

Tea Tree Oil

Advanced Clinicals amazon.com

$10.92

Tea tree has natural antimicrobial and antifungal powers, making it terrific for all sorts of things, like toning the scalp, neutralizing the feet, and of course, diminishing pus-filled pores. That buildup of bacteria is no match for tea tree oil; it kind of feels like a “fight fire with fire” scenario, too, though tea tree oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores. Best of all, Advanced Clinicals’ tea tree serum is 1.8 oz., nearly 60 percent more than a standard 1-oz. jar that would charge you twice as much for the essential oil.

Malin+Goetz Sulfur Paste

Acne Treatment Nighttime

Malin + Goetz amazon.com

$22.00

Sulfur is a common ingredient in spot treatments since it can soak up excess oil and grime from within a pimple, and also eradicate dead skin cells that might be causing the blemish in the first place. And Malin+Goetz’s sulfur treatment contains salicylic acid, too, to further clear out pores and help you wake up with smoother, calmer skin. (It’s an overnight lotion paste, for that matter.)

Peace Out Skincare Salicylic Acid Acne Healing Dots

Salicylic Acid Acne Healing Dots

Peace Out sephora.com

$19.00

Peace Out’s hydrocolloid stickers also deploy salicylic acid into the pores to help extract trapped sebum and dissolve dead skin cells. They use Vitamin A to promote smoother, faster-healing skin, as well as aloe vera to mitigate redness and to calm the spot on contact. Wear them overnight for a miracle, or for 6-8 hours during the day, also for a miracle.

Maapilim Mud Mask

Courtesy

Facial Mud Mask

Maapilim maapilim.com

$38.00

You can turn your trusted mud or clay mask into a spot treatment, by simply applying it to the budding blemish and the surrounding skin. Since muds soak up impurities from deep within the skin, they’re just as effective at extracting trapped sebum. Maapilim’s utilizes Dead Sea mud to boost circulation and soothe skin, as well as olive oil to moisturize and nourish (don’t worry, that olive oil won’t leave you feeling oily or clogged up, in fact, this mask does exactly the opposite of that).

Mario Badescu Drying Cream

Drying Cream

Mario Badescu sephora.com

$17.00

This cult-fave product magnifies the aforementioned drying abilities of sulfur with zinc oxide. This sinz also sponges up any excessive or trapped sebum. The lotion also cools, soothes, and promotes cellular turnover with aloe and allantoin, while lifting away dead surface cells with citric acid, so as to promote smoothness and prevent future breakouts.

This Legendary Brewer Is Brewing Beer Again After 10 Years

Greg Hall happens to be the only person in the world who has sold two different craft alcohol companies to Anheuser-Busch InBev. For this, he’s not the most popular with craft beer purists, who see him as the ultimate sell-out, sitting in an ivory tower counting his blood money. But if you’ve had a 10-minute conversation with Hall, it’s evident that he is someone who cares about what he brews and lives solely for that purpose.

Hall of course is that Greg Hall, whose dad John founded Goose Island Brewery. Who was the brewmaster at said brewery for 20 years. Who pioneered bourbon barrel-aged stouts. Who then left Goose Island in 2011, shortly after his family sold it to Anheuser-Busch, for a jaunt in Europe for a few months. Who then founded Virtue Cider (which is the second alcohol company he sold to ABI). And who is now brewing a Nordic-style lager at Virtue after brewing strictly cider for the past 10 years.

“Well, you know, I never really got away from thinking about beer,” Hall tells me over the phone. “Ironically today is actually the tenth anniversary of my last day at Goose Island.”

I first met Hall a couple of years back during a press tasting of that year’s Goose Island Bourbon County Stout lineup. It was a brisk fall evening in New York City and Hall, in tow from rural Michigan, was donning overalls, a flannel shirt jacket and the standard craft beer beard.

After leaving Goose Island, Hall traveled to France and England to visit with some of the premier cider makers of Europe. And he was immediately struck by the similarities of cider to one of his favorite beer styles.

“One of the things that really intrigued me [was] local fruit,” Hall says. “They’re all using fruit they grow or buy from the neighbors that everybody’s making cider on a farm. And it just reminded me so much like the farmhouse ales of Belgium and Northern France. And I think that those have always been some of my favorite beers.”

This of course coming from a man who loves Saisons so much that he named one after his daughter at Goose Island (Sofie). This compelled Hall to really dive into the world of cider, which he has arguably broken a lot of ground in during the past 10 years. He’s aging in oak (including spent bourbon barrels) and focusing on the acidity and tannins of the apples he’s sourcing from farmers. But it’s also about the apples he’s putting into those barrels, as well as other fruits to get the delicate and complex ciders he’s after. That’s where Vestland, Virtue’s new Nordic-style Lager comes in — which Hall feels is a perfect first beer for Virtue that coincides with the complexity of cider.

Vestland starts with a lager base very similar to a Helles-style lager with a solid malt profile. Some rye malt also was added to produce that nice spiciness and creamy mouthfeel.

As Hall continues, “And then instead of hopping it we kind of go with some of these botanicals. Caraway adds a little bit of nuttiness and complexity into the beer. And then we put juniper in very much like we would with a hop at the end of the boil but then we hit it again post-fermentation. So it’s like dry-hopping but like dry-berrying.”

As for the taste? Hall describes it as “A beer-flavored beer with juniper notes. It’s kind of floral — you get spicy and fruity all in one. I think if you’re not looking too hard, it just kind of tastes like a new hop variety, but as you dig deeper into the palate it really, to me, what it tastes like more than anything else is the outside.”

Which makes sense, because Virtue has a very similar climate to the Nordic countries and Hall’s whole reason for starting Virtue was to be more in touch with his ingredients.

Vestland releases today, May 12, in Chicago and Michigan and will be available for some time after that. Whether it gets distributed to Virtue’s wider distribution remains to be seen. But Hall’s triumphant return to beer making is not fleeting, as he intends to continue brewing farmhouse style beers that he feels are perfect complements to the complex ciders he’s making.

As Hall says, “We’re trying to make beer that is just like with our cider both refreshing at the end of the day but also serves its place at the table. With cider that’s the same thing we’ve wanted to do, make ciders that were really suitable for the table, and take the place of something like a white wine.”

The Stingray Flat Box by STEP 22 Is Every Neat Freak’s Dream

Every camper, beachgoer, or simply the organizing freak in you can benefit from the Stingray Flat Box by STEP 22. It can store almost anything from food, clothes, small appliances, outdoor gear, and more.

Boxes are useful but not when there’s a downpour or if you plan to go to the beach. You could end up with a soggy container and risk having items stored inside sprawled across the floor. But with this storage container, you can at least keep water or moisture at bay with its water repellant-coated STEP 22 TreadWeave Nylon exterior. YKK RC zippers, while being resistant to abrasion, also repels water.

The Stingray Flat Box is tough enough for any load. Whether you plan to bring your cooking tools, bathroom essentials, or camping gear, this can hold without losing its form because of its rigid panels. The panels are made with Atilon foam, PE Foam, and PE Board. Meanwhile, the main interior is made with Silver IllumiClean Antron coated with carbonate.

For convenience, this storage box packs down small at 17″ x 12″ x 2″ so it takes up little space in your car, closet, or wherever you use it. Think of it as the larger version of Dopp kits. When opened, it measures 17″ x 12″ x 7.5″ and gives you 21.1 liters of storage space. It packs light too at just a kilo and comes with a removable center divider for organization.

The Stingray Flat Box also comes with SynTough main tag and easy write patches for labeling so you can identify items inside easily. It uses 550 and tactical paracord zipper pulls with reflective tracer for strength and visibility in the dark.

The Lincoln Nautilus Is Comfortable and Competent, But Not Cheap

lincoln nautilus 2021

Will Sabel Courtney

You could be forgiven for being a tad confused as to where the Nautilus falls into the Lincoln lineup. The brand is one of the few luxury carmakers to have resisted the temptation to adopt BMW-style alphanumeric monikers, instead sticking with names that bring to mind the romance of air and sea travel: Aviator, Navigator, Nautilus, Corsair.

Of course, the problem with this is, there’s no way of knowing how those models fall in relation to one another. Adding to the confusion is that Lincoln has done an excellent job spreading its design language across its quartet of existing models, making many of them look somewhat alike; the smaller Corsair and Nautilus aren’t hard to confuse, and from certain angles, the larger Aviator and Navigator could be mixed up for one another.

So to put this ride in context: the Nautilus is the second rung in the Lincoln ladder, a midsized crossover that’s smaller than the (also midsized) Aviator but larger than the Corsair. It’s based on the Ford Edge, although Lincoln would probably rather you not talk about that.

Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

Is the Nautilus new?

Call it “reheated and refreshed.” For the 2021 model year, Lincoln spiffed up its smaller midsize SUV with a mild external makeover (it picked up a larger one back in 2018, when it went from being the MKX to the Nautilus) and a more involved interior revision, featuring new materials, new colors and a revised layout that boasts a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The bones, however, date back to 2015, when the then-MKX and its second-gen Ford Edge twin went on sale as the crossover equivalents of the Ford Fusion / Lincoln MKZ sedans. As such, its bones are a tad aged by the standards of the fiercely competitive luxury crossover set.

What makes the Lincoln Nautilus special?

It’s a great-looking SUV, for one thing. Lincoln, to its credit, has found its own lane in terms of design, crafting SUVs (yeah, all they sell now is SUVs) that look elegant and rakish without trying to disguise their bulk.

For another, it rips — at least, more than you’d expect of a Lincoln-badged family crossover, when you opt for the larger 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6. 335 horsepower is impressive, but it’s the 380 lb-ft of torque that give it a serious kick in everyday driving.

How does the Nautilus drive?

It’s smooth and peppy. The aforementioned power of the optional engine means it’s potent enough to manifest some torque steer until the all-wheel-drive system catches up with it; it’s a mild tug, however, and not nearly a big enough issue to take away from the surprising thrill of mashing the gas and blasting past unsuspecting sports coupes. The eight-speed automatic (which, fun fact, is actually a modified version of GM’s old nine-speed slushbox) isn’t quite as quick-acting as more modern automatics, but odds are good most people won’t notice the slight difference in shift speed or shift harshness versus other luxury rides.

Corner-carving isn’t exactly this SUV’s speciality; Lincoln, to its credit, has decided not to bother chasing Cadillac and Lexus into the sports-luxury arena, and instead concentrates on delivering a smooth, cosseting ride. Mission accomplished: the Nautilus soaks up bumps with an aplomb found on very few new vehicles. A stretch of New Jersey tarmac that usually rattles my teeth went by all but unnoticed; indeed, it was smooth enough that I genuinely raised my eyebrows in disbelief.

What’s the Lincoln Nautilus’s interior like?

Elegant, like most modern Lincolns. It may not quite be the equal of the Aviator or Navigator, but the mid-level Reserve trim’s interior is a pleasant interplay of lines, textures and materials. Muting the effect somewhat was the fact that my test car came with a black-on-black interior, as opposed to one of the lighter choices that intermix tan, brown or gray leather with black trim. (The fancy Flight Blue interior seen here comes on the top-tier Black Label trim.)

The front seats are quite comfortable places to spend the day, with ample support and means of adjustment. (Lincoln calls them “Bridge of Weir Deepsoft™ leather-trimmed seats,” which, as far as I can tell, means they’re made with semi-aniline, slow-dried, ethically sourced leather from Scottish cows.) I didn’t have a chance to sit in back, but from the looks of it, anyone of average size or smaller will probably find it adequate, while tall folks like myself might wind up wishing the driver had bought an Expedition instead.

How much does the Nautilus cost?

Your basic Lincoln Nautilus with front-wheel-drive and a turbocharged inline-four starts at $43,580; opt for AWD and the Standard I package that brings leather upholstery, which I’d expect most people would, and you’re looking at just under $49K.

My tester, however, came loaded up with options to the point of a roughly $67,000 price tag. For that sort of money, you could take home a nicely-equipped six-cylinder BMW X5 or Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 — SUVs with a dash more room and nameplates that are way more likely to impress the neighbors, should you be into that sort of thing.

Or, if you don’t need a luxury nameplate but want maximum capability and a very nice interior, a four-wheel-drive Ford F-150 Platinum or Ram 1500 Limited can be yours for similar money. Or, if you want something that’s even more fun but still packs crossover utility, a BMW X3 M is only a couple grand more. Or, if you’re really wedded to a Lincoln, the newer, more powerful Aviator Reserve can be had for similar money — and the plug-in hybrid Aviator Grand Touring is just a tad more than that.

Point is, it’s a competitive price point, and the Nautilus feels a tad outmatched in that rarefied air above $65,000. Go easier on the options to bring the price down, however (and maybe find a good lease deal on it), and you’ll have a surprisingly satisfying crossover for everyday life.

Ford CEO Hints the Blue Oval May Build an Electric Bronco

Last year, Ford (finally) launched the all-new Bronco. It has been a boffo hit with potential buyers, with more than 125,000 pre-orders already racked up before the SUV has even entered production. That said, it didn’t receive universal acclaim; some critics felt launching an all-new SUV without even a hybrid option in 2020 didn’t meet the moment. One, a bit theatrically, called the Bronco’s release “an obscene monument to climate denialism.” (And, notably, Jeep’s counter-offensive to the Bronco has involved both putting the hybrid 4xe Wrangler into production and a Wrangler EV concept.)

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

But Ford appears to have plans to address the powertrain efficiency issue moving forward. Confronted by a “Tesla-powered” Ford shareholder on Twitter about the lack of EV plans for the Bronco, Ford CEO Jim Farley responded leadingly — all but confirming Ford has something in store for us on the electrification front.

That said, we’d bet a hybrid Bronco will arrive first. Hybrid Bronco rumblings have been persistent; a Bronco gauge cluster leak showed an “EV Coaching” mode, which would only make sense in a hybrid. A hybrid would also be a markedly lower technical lift than an EV, and besides, having one may become a competitive necessity. The Jeep Wrangler has a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and the Toyota 4Runner should get one soon as well. And early returns suggest the hybrids will be the better-performing versions of those vehicles.

Expect a pure electric Bronco to take at least a few years, however — potentially not arriving until the next model cycle. The technological challenge is massive: the Bronco currently runs on the aging Ranger platform, and Ford doesn’t yet have a new dedicated EV platform to swap it with. There’s also not much competitive incentive for one just yet; after all, Jeep’s Magneto concept — literally a stock Wrangler with a crude powerplant swap — only showed how far the competition is away from building one.

These Headphones Are the Most Affordable Alternatives to AirPods Pro

Wyze has just announced its first pair of truly wireless earbuds, the Wyze Buds Pro — and the big news is that they look almost exactly like Apple’s AirPods Pro, just in black. They also have many of the same features, such as active noise cancellation and wireless charging.

The big difference, however, is price. While Apple’s AirPods Pro cost $249 (although they’re often on sale for around $200), the Wyze Buds Pro are priced at just $60.

Of course the Wyze Buds Pro will come with a lot of tradeoffs, at least as it relates to AirPods Pro. They don’t have Apple’s H1 chip, so they won’t be able to fast-pair to your iPhone. They don’t support for spatial audio or Dolby Atmos, either. And, if we’re being honest, we don’t expect them sound nearly as good or have as excellent noise-canceling and transparency modes. But that’s to be expected in a pair of $60 wireless earbuds.

That said, the Wyze Buds Pro look poised to be the AirPods Pro alternative to beat. They look (and will probably feel) almost identical to Apple’s premium wireless earbuds. And they’re some of the most affordable noise-canceling wireless earbuds you can buy; Amazon’s second-generation Echo Buds and 1More’s ComfortBuds Pro both cost $100.

Additionally, Wyze is an audio company that you can trust. It released the Wyze Headphones last year, after all, and they’re still some of the best budget noise-canceling headphones you can buy.

As for other specs, each Wyze Buds Pro earbud will pack a 10mm high amplitude audio driver, which the company says will deliver “rich treble and strong bass.” They’ll get 4.5 hours of battery life with ANC turned on, and six hours with it turned off. The charging case can give them up to 18 hours of battery life (with ANC turned on); a 15-minute quick charge via its USB-C charging port will give you an hour of playtime. They also have a 6-microphone voice system (three mics in each earbud) so they should deliver good call quality.

The Wyze Buds Pro are available for preorder right now. Wyze expects them to start shipping in late July.
