The 12 Best Gym Shorts of 2021 for Every Kind of Workout

The right pair of workout shorts can inspire you to train longer, harder and more often. On the flip side, the wrong pair — too baggy, too tight, too falling apart — can leave you feeling uninspired, lethargic and possibly wanting to stay home and eat ice cream rather than get to work.

In other words, your workout shorts can have a big impact on how you train, and how you ultimately look and feel. So it’s important to — like that old guy said in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade — choose wisely.

With that in mind, here’s a 12-pack of shorts that will set you up for success no matter how you take your endorphin rush. From running to CrossFit to hoops to biking, they’ll support and elevate your training, driving you forward to achieve your best. Bonus: you’ll likely look a bit more stylish too.

Best Overall Gym Shorts

Ten Thousand Interval Short

Most of us don’t have the budget — or time — for 12 different pairs of shorts for 12 different activities. We’d prefer one pair of shorts we can wear for virtually every athletic pursuit. If that describes you, the Interval is perfect. Featuring a thick no-pinch waistband, a few well-placed pockets and an ultra-wicking shell (plus a comfy liner for $10 more), these shorts easily accommodate kettlebell swings, med ball tosses, box jumps and bench presses. Also: tennis.

Best Upgrade Gym Shorts

Lululemon Pace Breaker Short

Made from lightweight fabric with just the right amount of stretch, these well-designed shorts suit everything from dog walking to deadlifts. The liner is soft and supportive and features a clever little phone sleeve that’ll keep that essential device from bouncing all over the gym. The construction is durable, too, so you can work out as hard and as often as you like and lower the cost-per-wear in the process.

Best Value Gym Shorts

Under Armour MK1 Shorts

If these shorts were a sex position, they’d be missionary. But you know what? People like missionary. And for a very low price, there’s a lot to like here. The fit is streamlined but not too snug, and UA’s patented HeatGear fabric provides lightweight comfort that minimizes moisture. They’ve also got anti-odor technology — and two mesh pockets to hold all that money you’re saving.

Best Shorts for Running

Path Projects Sykes PX 5-Inch Short

These smartly designed shorts earned their place among the best fitness products of the past year thanks to premium materials like Airtastic, an ultralight, stretchy, breathable and water-repellent fabric that eases every stride. Stash your phone, cash, gels and house keys in its carefully placed, no-bounce pockets, and watch the miles fly by.

Best Shorts for CrossFit

Reebok Austin II Solid Shorts

If you’re partaking in this particularly punishing form of training, you need apparel up to the task. These stretchy, ultra-lightweight shorts from Reebok — the CrossFit experts — are equipped with side slits at the hem to give you freedom of movement on WOD staples like burpees, lunges and bodyweight squats.

Best Shorts for Yoga

Courtesy

Vuori Kore Short

For poses like downward dog and warrior II, you want to keep things classy with a liner. These shorts, from laidback-California-cool brand Vuori, not only offer a breathable boxer-brief liner, but also they’re uber-comfortable thanks to quick-drying four-way stretch fabric and a roomier fit.

Best Shorts for Shooting Hoops

Nike Jordan Jumpman Diamond Shorts

The subtle pinstripes and diamonds on the sides are a nod to MJ’s Bulls days, back when he was swishing fadeaways and posterizing opponents nightly. The soft knit fabric makes them comfy, while the pockets are a good place to put your hands — when they aren’t mimicking the “I don’t know” shrug after draining too many 3s, of course.

Best Shorts for Coed Soccer

Courtesy

Adidas Condivo 20 Shorts

Named after the Italian word for flavor, the Condivos should add a little spice to your weekend kickarounds. The lightweight and breathable AEROREADY fabric will have you zipping around the pitch like a young Roberto Baggio. They’re versatile enough for other activities, too, like watching soccer and playing FIFA.

Best Shorts for Hiking

Courtesy

Patagonia Nine Trails Shorts

The recycled polyester/spandex fabric wicks moisture and allows you to move with comfort on the trails. A boxer-brief liner with odor control lets you focus on the hike, not the funk. And the logo on the left leg glows when illuminated, making you — and your fine taste in outdoor brands — easier to spot when the sun sets.

Best Shorts for Obstacle Course Racing

Hylete Fuse Short

These smooth, stretchy shorts from Hylete offer a larger leg opening for added room and flexibility — so if you can’t get over that climbing wall, it’s on you. They also feature a ton of pockets, three different lengths and a waistband system that can make the drawstrings either interior or exterior. Thoughtful.

Best Shorts for Weightlifting

Rogue Black Ops Shorts 8-Inch 2.0

These no-nonsense training shorts are perfect for your no-B.S., all-out days in the weight room. The elastic waistband with mesh venting helps you keep cool while you’re tossing around iron, and the loose fit and 8-inch inseam allow for unrestricted mobility during squats, deadlifts and lunges. Yes, you can wear them for cardio, too.

Best Shorts for Biking

Courtesy

Elevenpine Uprising Short

Not quite ready for the nothing-but-spandex look? These clever shorts employ zippers and Velcro straps to convert from form-fittingly close to comfortably loose in seconds. For an extra $40, you can score a combo deal with the Liberator Liner and enjoy some critical long-distance padding.

Amazon Prime Day 2021: Everything You Need to Know

Don’t miss the Prime Day deals: subscribe to our daily newsletter Today’s Best Deals and have them sent straight to your inbox.

At the end of last year, Amazon revealed that it had over 150 million Prime members worldwide — 50 million of those added during the pandemic. For better or worse, the giant online retailer has drastically reshaped the face of retail and the internet in the past decade.

There is no denying the convenience factor of a Prime account: free one-day delivery, access to Prime Video, discounts at Whole Foods, etc. Another one of those membership benefits is getting access to Amazon Prime Day. Similar to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Prime Day is a chance to save tons of money on a plethora of products — oftentimes at the best prices of the year.

There are so many deals on Prime Day that it’s tough for one person to sift through them all. So bookmark this page and get ready to save — we’ll continue updating this post when we know more information to share about Prime Day 2021. Until then, here’s everything you need to know about scoring the best deals of Prime Day this year.

LEARN MORE

What Is Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day has been a yearly fixture since July 2015. It was initially schemed up to clear out Amazon’s warehouse by way of one-day mega deals for Amazon Prime members. That eventually morphed into a two-day event that sees many prices marked down to their lowest prices of the year.

In 2020, Prime members saved $1.4 billion in their purchases over the two days it ran in October, which is just a rough gauge of the type of savings that can be had.

When Is Prime Day?

Traditionally, Prime Day has been in the middle of summer. Thanks to the pandemic, last year’s Prime Day was shifted to October 13 and 14 because of massive supply chain issues. While the exact date has yet to be announced, Amazon Prime Day 2021 is rumored to be happening in the summer again. We will be sure to update this section when the official dates are announced.

What Kinds of Deals Will There Be?

Last year’s deals were a bit more sparse than in years past. We’re chalking that up to the supply chain issues that Amazon dealt with in 2020, just like the rest of the retail world. Some of the best deals were items like Sony’s WH-1000XM4 noise-canceling headphones, Kershaw and Gerber pocket knives, Apple AirPods Pro, protein powders and more. One thing you can always bet that will be on sale will be all of Amazon’s tech products and we’d put money on that being the case again this year.

Prime Day has become such a shopping holiday that in recent years Amazon’s biggest competitors have offered up their own two-day sales events. Dyson ran some incredible deals last year during Prime Day. Retailers like Walmart and Wayfair typically oblige as well. The best part about other online retailers recognizing the magnitude of the shopping holiday is that they don’t require Amazon Prime accounts — they’re essentially free to shop, unlike Prime Day. You can count on Gear Patrol to bring you the best non-Amazon Prime Day deals this year again.

How to Shop Prime Day and Get the Best Deals

First off, you need to be an Amazon Prime member to take advantage of Prime Day. Currently, a Prime membership will cost you $12.99/month. If you want, you can opt for a one-time payment of $119/year which will save you $36.88 (after a free 30-day trial). For what it’s worth, there is also a strictly Prime Video account that costs $8.99/month.

One thing to understand about Prime Day though is that there are a lot of deals that no one should be shopping. As we mentioned, Prime Day is one of the tools Amazon uses to get rid of the junk no one wants to buy and they employ the tactic of can’t-resist-pricing to get shoppers to buy those things. With that said, it is important to ignore the onslaught and truly just shop what you’re in the market for. Sometimes Lightning Deals can be worth it, but you can’t really predict those. Make a list and try your best to stick to it.

Once you have your list, price alerts come in handy. CamelCamelCamel, a free-to-use program, is great for giving you an alert on any item you want anytime the price drops on Amazon. It will also show you price history so you know how good of a deal you’re getting.

Another word of advice: Don’t shop Prime Day drunk. And lastly, don’t forget that sometimes the best deals don’t just happen on Amazon.

This Luxury SUV Offers a Surprising Dose of Technology

Haval has just launched its most advanced SUV yet, and if you’re unfamiliar with the brand, you might want to change that. Haval, launched in 2013, specializes in crossovers and SUVs and delivers luxurious and high-tech automobiles at a price much lower than its competitive set. Most recently, Haval was inspired to produce a vehicle that will challenge traditional automotive thinking and redefine affordable luxury. The result? The brand’s smartest SUV ever. The brand new H6 is not only smarter, with higher levels of technology than its predecessor, but it’s also bigger than the model it replaces while managing to come in at a lower curb weight. From its 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine to its Digital Driver interface, there is no wonder why this car has been making waves across the Atlantic.

Its exterior is particularly notable, with simple yet exquisite curves. And the luxury doesn’t stop at the exterior. With wireless phone charging, LED instrument cluster, 360-degree camera, heated steering wheel and automatic parking, the interior is fully fitted. The powertrain of the H6 is enhanced by the addition of a new seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission for quick, precise shifts on the road. It’s also larger than most of the medium SUV competition, letting you fit more gear, people or both. Plus, with a range of active and passive safety features, this car keeps you secure no matter where you take it. When it comes to technology, comfort and safety, this car is a triple threat.

7 New Gadgets to Keep on Your Radar

This week in the world of tech and gadgets, Apple invested big in the company that makes the protective glass on its iPhones; the first leaks of Sony’s upcoming wireless earbuds, the WF-1000XM4, appeared; Xbox announced a convenient way for consumers to register to purchase its next-gen consoles; and a company called Facer announced a neat way to get customized faces for your Apple Watch.

Of course, a bunch of new gadgets were announced, too. We’ve rounded them up below.

Bluesound Node and Powernode (3rd-gen)

tech roundup

Bluesound

Bluesound announced new and refreshed versions of its Node and Powernode digital music streamers. They don’t look drastically different, but Bluesound decked each new model with a more powerful processor and an improved DAC that supports high-resolution audio (up to 24-bit/192kHz and MQA files). They also have touch preset controls so you can quickly start playing music (from your choice of source) just by touching the device. As before, the updated Node is designed to work with powered or active speakers, while the Powernode has a built-in power amplifier so it can work with a pair of passive speakers.

Price: $549 (Node); $899 (Powernode)

The Wyze Buds Pro are available for preorder right now. Wyze expects them to start shipping in late July.

SteelSeries Rival 5

The Rival 5 is SteelSeries’s newest gaming mouse. It’s affordable and versatile, and should be a good fit for most gamers, whether they’re playing Valheim, Fornite or Minecraft. It has a number of primary and thumb buttons, toggle bars, an RGB-backlit scroll wheel and a DPI switcher. It’s also has a TrueMove Air optical sensor for accuracy. Bose SoundControl Hearing Aids

tech roundup

Bose announced its first-ever pair of hearing aids, the SoundControl Hearing Aids, this week, and they’re designed to help adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. There are two really cool things about the SoundControl Hearing Aids. First, you can buy them and get them up and running without going to the doctor, getting hearing test or prescription. And secondly, they cost $850, which is actually very affordable compared to most other hearing aids. According to Bose, the SoundControl Hearing Aids were “optimized, conceptualized, developed, and tested solely to improve hearing and does not stream music or calls.”

Amazon Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 5 (Updated)

tech roundup

Amazon quietly announced slightly refreshed models of its Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 5 this week. The larger of the two, the refreshed Echo Show 8, has been outfitted with a camera system with a wider field of view; this allows it to pan, zoom and track a subject as they walk around the frame (this is the same thing that the Echo Show 10 has been able to do). The Echo Show 5 has a slightly better camera, too, (but can’t do track the subject around the frame like the refreshed Echo Show 8); more significantly, Amazon dropped the price by $5.

Price: $85 (Echo Show 5); $130 ( Echo Show 8)

Here’s the Story Behind AETHER’s Unique New Moth Ads

Few outdoor-minded companies do as good a job of combining aesthetics and technical prowess as AETHER. The brand, which was started in 2009 by Palmer West and Jonah Smith, was born out of the desire for a clothing collection that looked at home in the city but could withstand the outdoors — and it’s easy to conclude that the two have been successful in their mission.

Today, AETHER encompasses a complete lifestyle collection offering top-quality gear for everything from skiing, to riding your motorcycle, to traveling and everything in between. The brand’s latest campaign, titled “You Only Get One Spin,” is one of its most unique initiatives yet. We caught up with West and Smith to discuss the meaning behind the new campaign, the history and inspiration behind AETHER and to get a sneak peek at what’s ahead.

Q: The AETHER mantra is “You Only Get One Spin”. Where did that line come from? And why did you land on moths in your new campaign?

Palmer West: “You Only Get One Spin embodies the internal drive that guides us. We’re restless at heart. This phrase is our way of saying life is short — make it count. Our new campaign is a timely reminder of what happens when you stop striving to add excitement to your everyday life. The moth is a beautiful representation of our enemy — our antagonist —because a stagnant life is the enemy of a brand like ours.

Why the moth? Well, the last thing we wanted was to make apparel that would be hung in a closet to become moth food. We put too much blood, sweat and tears into our designs for them to suffer that fate. We don’t make moth food — enough said.”

Q: You say that AETHER isn’t a business, it’s a story — a story of rebellious optimism. Tell us a bit about that story.

Jonah Smith: “We started an outdoor clothing company in 2009 because frankly, we couldn’t find what we were looking for: technically built outerwear that sacrificed nothing in design. We outgrew the traditional outerwear company offerings because at some point you have to choose to dress differently than you did in college. We were film producers by trade at the time and couldn’t find outerwear that was built to withstand all of Mother Nature’s fury while still being acceptable as daily wear.

We are a couple of guys who grew up beating the crap out of our gear, so what we lacked in construction know-how was offset with decades of real-world experience in knowing what works and what doesn’t. If we stopped to ask someone if AETHER was a good idea, we knew what the answer would be. That’s why we used our own money to start AETHER. We found the smartest and most talented people we could and convinced them what we wanted to build would resonate far beyond the outdoor space. That was more than ten years ago, and people still like what we do.

aether moth x outerwear

Aether

Q: You’ve been described as being addicted to adventure. How does that addiction feed what AETHER is going to do next and what design choices it makes?

Palmer West: “The more we build, the more we have to test, and the more we test, the better the gear gets. The better the gear gets, the farther we can go on our adventures. Delivering on our commitment to our customers demands that we get out there and practice what we preach. So our addiction feeds AETHER, and, in return, AETHER feeds our restlessness.

Adventure is often thought to be limited to the great outdoors. While that is part of it for sure, adventure also encompasses world travel and cultural exploration — both in cosmopolitan cities and on the most remote corners of our planet. Discovering a new place is as adventurous to us as climbing a mountain. Explaining what adventure means to us helps shed light on all of the different environments we think require specific gear. We were lucky to build a brand with more than just one note — more than just one activity to support. We can follow our passions and build accordingly. Wherever technicality is required and aesthetics are lacking, AETHER is committed to bridging that divide. We have new partnerships, new collaborations and new AETHER categories to launch in the next calendar year. We may have been locked away from each other for the last 13 months, but we have been very busy. When you lock down this many restless people, something has to give!”

Dyson Completely Revamped Its Line of Air Purifiers

Dyson has overhauled its three-year-old line of air purifiers with a new set of models. The new purifiers are stronger, quieter and more efficient than the previous ones, and it includes a new range of models that target and destroy a silent killer, formaldehyde.

Unveiled today, the new Dyson Purifier Cool ($550), Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool ($650) and Dyson Purifier Formaldehyde range ($670+) have been tweaked to delivered 50 percent cleaner air than Dyson’s previous models. Instead of having just its filters being classified as HEPA H13 — the second-highest level of air filtration — the whole unit meets HEPA H13 standards. Dyson did this by fully sealing the air purifiers so that no dirty air can leak back into the air you breathe. The new range can capture 99.97 of particles as small as 0.3 microns, which is about the size of viruses and bacteria.

Dyson

The new Cool and Hot+Cool purifiers are impressive, but in Dyson’s new Formaldehyde range, the brand brings new technology to combat an invisible toxic gas that few people might even be aware of. Formaldehyde can be found in a number of household products — like glue and paint — as well as cosmetics and other consumer products. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, prolonged exposure to formaldehyde can increase the likelihood of getting cancer. The formaldehyde-fighting machines utilize a special sensor to detect the chemical — which is 500 times smaller than 0.1 microns — which is then destroyed by a Selective Catalytic Oxidization filter. Basically, the filter is made up of billions of tunnels that capture formaldehyde and turn it into water and carbon dioxide. You’ll never need to replace this filter, either — it regenerates from oxygen.

What’s more, all of the new purifiers are 20 percent quieter after engineers modified their airflow path to reduce the amount of friction between the air and the units’ surface. Being smart Dyson products, they work with the Dyson Link app, and they’re compatible with Alexa, Google Home and Siri. Head to Dyson’s website to check out the air purifiers for yourself. Prices start at $550, and they’re backed by a two-year warranty.

Get Jerry Lorenzo’s 24K Gold Gel Eye Patches

Fear of God designer Jerry Lorenzo has a new collection out this week — it drops tomorrow, May 14th at Fear of God, Nordstrom, Pac Sun and several others. As such, he’s been doing plenty of promotional shoots: interviews, a lookbook featuring his family and a few one-off images for retailers or editorial use.

In his behind-the-scenes Instagram, he explains he was responsible for “creative directing, fathering, modeling, styling.” Hectic, yes. “A pretty full day… not sure we’ll do it again, but so happy we did… proud of my squad,” he continues. But his first photo caught our eye, a still of him getting glammed up by men’s grooming expert Eliven Quiros. He’s wearing two glistening gold gel patches under each eye, and, based on his skin, they certainly seem to work. But what exactly do these do?

They’re Peter Thomas Roth’s 24K Gold Pure Luxury Lift and Firm Hydra-Gel Eye Patches. Sold in packages of 30 pairs (60 patches), the sticky patches strive to offer your skin “a more lifted and firmer appearance for a more youthful-looking eye area,” the brand explains. They’ll reduce puffiness and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, oftentimes to a noticeable degree within just 10 minutes. Packed with caffeine, colloidal gold and hydrolyzed collagen yet free from sulfates, SLS and SLES, parabens and phthalates, these patches prove refreshing, rejuvenating and, well, really damn luxurious.

Everything You Need to Know to Plan a Summer Vacation

aerial beach view

Carlos Sanchez PereyraGetty Images

Few of us have ever experienced anything like what we’ve had to live through for the past year. The pandemic has kept us local, stuck in our apartments or even back home with our parents. We’ve talked ad nauseam about the impact the pandemic has had on our world here at Gear Patrol and how we think the world will look moving forward, gear-wise. Now it is time to look to the near future and actually put the gear we love to talk about so much to use. This means going out and finding the perfect vacation to revitalize and energize our souls.

With that said, inevitably, things will be different. There will still be various travel restrictions, you’ll still need to bring masks and you’ll want your vaccine card with you, if you have one. Many countries are still seeing the virus come in waves and many haven’t even gotten vaccines going yet. This isn’t all to say it is impossible to enjoy a trip with few issues, but keep in mind that this will not be like taking a vacation in 2019.

We’ve done a ton of research on planning a summer vacation and what you need to make the most of your first trip post-pandemic. Frankly, this has gotten us fired up and we hope that it inspires others to take the leap (in a safe manner) and get to planning their own killer vacation. If you want to know where to book, what to do or what to bring, we’ve got you covered.

Aston Martin is honoring its rich racing legacy with the V12 Speedster DBR1

Aston Martin appears to be on a roll this 2021. For the past few months, the prestigious British marque has been grabbing headlines with exciting announcements. Among these, the luxury automaker is going roofless and calling it the V12 Speedster DBR1. Owners should really pay attention to the weather forecast before cruising in this sleek beauty. Nevertheless, even when at a standstill, it is a stunning sight to behold.

For those closely following the Aston Martin’s rich motorsports legacy, a part of its namesake is paying homage to the legendary DBR1 race car. With a remarkable list of podium finishes in various tracks and competitions, this is a wonderful toast to its achievements.

Only 88 examples of this insanely exclusive supercar are heading for production. No doubt collectors are already lining up for a chance of filling up that empty spot in their massive garages. Images of the V12 Speedster DBR1 beside the original show that it sports an Aston Martin Racing Green colorway.

Contrast comes from the Clubsport Gloss White roundels which are on the doors and on the hood. Other characteristics include gloss satin silver and carbon fiber elements with smoked taillights add to its alluring mystique.

Images of the interior were unavailable, but Aston Martin was willing to share the details. Q Forest Green leather upholstery with Viridian Green technical textile seat inserts welcome its occupants. Living up to its racing lineage, 5.2-liter V12 twin-turbo engine generates 690 horsepower. Testing shows a 0-62 mph in just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 198 miles per hour.

The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional Co-Axial Master Chronometer

A version of this story first appeared in Gear Patrol Magazine. Subscribe today for more stories like this one, plus receive a $15 gift card to the Gear Patrol Store.

Improving upon a classic is never an easy feat, especially one as beloved as the Omega Speedmaster Professional. But at some point, even stalwarts like the Speedy need upgrades, especially when advancements in watchmaking technology promise better performance, higher accuracy and increased comfort.

With that in mind, meet the new Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional Co-Axial Master Chronometer. While many incremental updates to classic models elicit yawns from die-hard fans, such is not the case with the Speedy Pro. Powered by the Master Chronometer–certified calibre 3861 movement, it’s a more accurate, more robust, longer-running watch than its predecessor. It’s also equipped with a redesigned dial and a new bracelet, each of which alone would be enough to excite longtime Speedy fans. Taken together, they’ve thrilled the Omega community and are sure to welcome legions of new admirers into the Moonwatch fold. Of course, all this innovation isn’t cheap. On a bracelet, this Speedy lands at a base price of $6,300, clocking in around 20 percent more expensive than the last Hesalite-equipped iteration.

To be clear, the calibre 3861 is no longer brand new — it first saw the light of day in March of 2019, powering the all-gold Speedmaster Apollo 11 Anniversary Limited Edition; and it has since appeared in two more models. The transition from these limited-production models to the standard, stainless steel Professional was all but inevitable, but it’s still notable that the series 1861/861 movements are being officially retired after over 50 years of service in the Speedmaster.

speedmaster

Henry Phillips

The 3861 is certainly a significant improvement over the 1861. Master Chronometer–certified, the 3861 is accurate to within 0/+5 seconds per day. It can also resist magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss, it’s more shock resistant than the 1861 and requires less frequent service, and its power reserve has increased by two hours. Put it inside a case that can withstand wild temperature fluctuations, rapid decompression and high pressure, and you have a timepiece better suited than ever for manned space flight, even if most examples will never make it farther than the troposphere.

The watch’s matching steel bracelet has likewise been improved. Its five-link construction features thinner center links with either mirror- or matte-polished intermediate links, a taper from 20mm to 15mm, and a redesigned folding clasp with an engraved logo and two-position micro-adjust. In addition to giving the watch a more refined, luxurious look, the new bracelet is also more comfortable than its predecessor.

So why the choice of mirror- or matte-polished links on the bracelet? The Speedy Pro has long been available in two distinct versions: one equipped with a modern, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, the other paired with a vintage-style Hesalite (plexiglass) crystal. Purists prefer the Hesalite for several reasons, not least of which because it’s the type of crystal approved by NASA. (If your watch crystal were to break in space, the last thing you’d want would be tiny shards of sharp glass flying around your spacecraft.) Befitting its all-business identity, the Hesalite version comes with matte-polished intermediate links on the bracelet and a solid case back, while the flashier, more modern sapphire version’s bracelet features mirror-polished inner links and a transparent sapphire case back.

speedmaster

Henry Phillips

Depending the version, the case back will either feature the words “Co-Axial Master Chronometer Professional Moonwatch” and “Flight-Qualified By NASA In 1965 For All Manned Space Missions” (Hesalite) or “Co-Axial Master Chronometer” and “The First Watch Worn On The Moon” (sapphire). Additionally, the Omega globe logo is present on the inside of the top right lug, while the case metal is listed on the bottom right lug. (The watch is also available in two gold versions, “Sedna” gold and “Canopus” gold.)

As for the watch’s famous tachymeter bezel, it now features a throwback touch in the form of a small dot over the “90” mark, rather than next to it — a reference to early Speedmaster models and a detail that watch geeks love. The dial itself also features references to retro Speedys, such as the ST105.012 (the model worn on the moon in 1969), where the edge with the minute/seconds track and hour indices is raised slightly. Finally, the Hesalite version comes with a painted Omega logo, another throwback, and the case has been slimmed down compared to recent iterations.

speedmaster

Henry Phillips

The whole package wears like a dream. At 42mm wide, the Speedmaster Professional isn’t a small watch and never has been, but somehow the inwardly curving, twisted lugs of its case manage to redirect some of the design’s heft. The new, more tapered bracelet also helps slim the watch down, and of course the thinner cases are exactly what the doctor ordered.

Because the case is slightly asymmetrical and the pushers and crown are integrated into its right side, they don’t protrude into your hand as on certain other chronograph designs. And because the bracelet is so comfortable and articulates well, you don’t necessarily notice that you’re wearing a large watch.

The pusher action on the chronograph from the new 3861 movement is buttery smooth and a pleasure to use, while the dial — despite the presence of 30-minute, 12-hour and running-seconds subdials — is incredibly legible. (The green glow of the Super-LumiNova also ensures that the watch is easy to read at night, a must for a tool watch like the Speedy.) Fans of vintage Omega will be satisfied with the “dot-over-90” bezel and the stepped dial, while those who value comfort will appreciate the luxurious new bracelet.

speedmaster

Henry Phillips

As for the negatives here, there aren’t many. Some Speedy fans will be disappointed by the price tag, which puts it out of reach for many casual watch buyers. However, when compared to Rolex’s Daytona, which has a base price of $13,150, Omega’s flagship chronograph remains somewhat down-to-earth.

And how can you argue with an engine as refined as the 3861, made in-house by Omega, the world’s second largest watch manufacturer, and calibrated to the highest possible standards of accuracy? If such a movement on its own isn’t worth a premium over the previous model, I assure you that the movement, the bracelet and the dial together absolutely are. Suffice it to say that the 3861-based Speedmaster Professional isn’t just another monthly “drop” from Omega. It’s a testament to the quality and professionalism that the Swiss marque infuses into its watches — watches that have been to the Moon and back.

Nike partners with Sony to release the PG 5 PlayStation 5 sneakers

Up until now, the strong demand for the PS5 continues to leave retailers both online and physical with barely any inventory. As soon as restocks arrive, those are as good as spoken for as consumers pull out all the stops to get their hands on one. Banking on the latest console’s remarkable popularity, Sony is collaborating with Nike for a soon-to-be highly collectible PG 5 PlayStation 5 sneakers.

The timing is impeccable as this is NBA superstar’s Paul George’s fifth signature pair of kicks. As such, it perfectly matches Sony’s new game system as it is also the fifth generation in the catalog. According to Nike, the athlete is a big fan of everything PlayStation since he was a kid and up until now.

For the PG 5, it has been designed to embody elements of the PS5. Starting with the upper, we’re looking at a two-tone scheme in black and white. Copying the colorway of the PS5, The collar, tongue, insole and laces are in black while the rest is in white.

There are accents in blue such as the Swoosh logo, PG emblem, and more. The PG 5 PlayStation 5 flaunts the PlayStation logo on the tongue and another on the insole for the left shoe, while the right has PG badges instead. Meanwhile, the heel tab features the PG 5 script in the PlayStation font.

Another interesting detail gamers will love is a little more subtle. You need to be up close to see the intricate textures on the forefoot band and heel overlay. Much like its console counterpart, these are actually the symbols (Square, Cross, Triangle, and Circle) Sony uses for its gaming segment. The Nike PG 5 PlayStation 5 is dropping soon so stay tuned.
