This New Steel Sports Watch Is Surprisingly Affordable

In 2016, Forge & Foster founder Steve Allen was looking for a watch. Instead of the perfect timepiece, he found a hole in the watch world — where were the bold, high-quality watches affordably priced for everyday wear? Unsurprisingly, he wasn’t alone in his desire for a well-priced statement piece, and the brand now offers a wide range of sharp, well-sized steel sports watches. Take the brand’s new Titan X series, which offers a skeletonized dial and tonneau-shaped case at a fantastic price. The 41mm Noble has a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and display case back, so you can watch the full beauty of its automatic Seagull movement (which has a 41-hour power reserve, by the way) from either side. And did we mention its two-year international warranty? And with a price tag of $299, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a bang-for-your-buck statement watch anywhere else.

In this episode, Editor Will Price, who runs Gear Patrol’s Home & Drinks content, gets into why rum is the hot spirit of the moment–and why he thinks rum is an excellent, affordable alternative for whiskey lovers especially. You’d be forgiven for knowing little about rum as a serious spirit, and Will is advocating for rum as something that’s much, much more than booze you dump into a glass of coca cola.

You can find extensive rum buying guides on the gear patrol website, and there’s a story in the latest GP magazine about rum too…all those links are in the show notes. Those combined with this conversation will get you ready to hunt for bottles.

My Favorite New Piece of Hiking Gear Is Admittedly Very Nerdy

I don’t see a lot of people these days. It’s largely because, due to the pandemic, I work from home, and that home happens to be a small modern cabin at the end of a dirt road in the hills of central Vermont. (For perspective, the closest Starbucks is 27 miles away, but the road to get there is steep and winding and closes from November to May; the alternative route is 35 miles.) The cabin has large picture windows, and I spend a lot of time looking out of them, mainly at the birds.

The forest here is full of birds. You can hear them all day long starting around 5 a.m., which is my new wake-up time because it’s when they sing their loudest. I’ve even begun to be able to identify specific birds based on their song; for example, the hermit thrush, Vermont’s state bird, whose tune David Sibley describes as “ethereal, fluting, without a clear rising or falling trend” in Sibley Birds East (a recent purchase).

Gary CarterGetty Images

I’ve never seen a hermit thrush, though. Not closely enough to identify, at least, which is why I was particularly enthused when Nocs Provisions sent me an early sample of its recently released Zoom Tube Monocular Telescope. If you don’t know what a monocular is — I didn’t — imagine a pair of binoculars cut in half, and you’ve got it.

Nocs furnished the Zoom Tube with 8x magnification power and a 32-millimeter objective lens. It’s a gold standard of sorts for birders because it simultaneously offers impressive zoom and a wide enough field of view to lock in on what you’re spying. It’s also water-resistant, and I have to commend Nocs for making binoculars (and monoculars) desirably cool, primarily by adding a rugged textured grip in various colors.

Bu what I like best about the Zoom Tube, besides its name, is how compact it is. I used to keep it on the windowsill for the hopeful spotting of downy woodpeckers and northern cardinals, which is, admittedly, pretty nerdy. But now that trails have dried up and the peaks are ice-free, I’ve begun carrying it in my hiking backpack any time I venture into the woods. It fits in a water bottle pocket — hell, it fits in my shorts pocket — and amplifies the summit experience (by eight) by letting me zoom in on the little villages, jealousy-inducing homes, nearby mountains and potential swimming holes that dot the landscape.

What I’m trying to say is that we need to de-stigmatize bird watching, but more importantly, that whether you like birds or not, you’ll like the Zoom Tube. It’s one of those totally unnecessary gear accessories that brings a little bit of delight to whatever outdoor activity you pursue, just by giving you the superpower to see farther.

5 Debonair Ways to Style a Leather Jacket

After more than a year of social distancing and isolation at home, we might have neglected our wardrobes. Perhaps you are considering some shopping soon, but still thinking about what type of apparel. When frugality is on the top of your list, make sure to sift through the closet just in case there is something that was neglected.  If not, we’re here to help you discover how a leather jacket can enhance your style.

You might have read another article we published that discusses some of the nuances that involve the material in question. In this guide, we hope to provide the necessary details you need in order to purchase the right type of men’s leather jackets. We will be focusing on this versatile piece of outerwear and showcasing some of the cool ways of wearing it.

Before anything else, you should know that there are several types of leather jackets. It’s essential that you understand what each offer in terms of appeal and what they pair nicely with. Among those that remain popular to date are bomber jackets, biker jackets, field jackets, leather blazers, and leather vests among others.

Please note that leather is great for keeping warm, which means our suggestions are ideal for colder seasons or areas with cooler climates. Nevertheless, it does not mean you need to avoid it entirely. Go for suede or vests to beat the heat and still look good. With these in mind, it’s time we learned about 5 debonair ways to style a leather jacket.

Leather Biker Jackets

You can never go wrong with a timeless ensemble that’s also functional at the same time. Typically, this is the outfit of choice by those who prefer two-wheelers instead of cars. it provides adequate protection against road rash in case of mishaps.

These days, these give the wearer a badass charm normally associated with bikers. Thus, guys who are spending their leisure cruising the open roads need to own one. Metal hardware, a zipper, buckles, belts, and large lapels are common elements of its presentation.

As such, go for jeans and a T-shirt (preferably with graphics of a band or something else). This gives off a rocker persona and can be paired with sneaker or boots of your choosing. Darker colors are the best way to go, but it really depends on your personal tastes.

Leather Bomber Jackets

Also called flight jackets, these frequently saw action in aviation industries of the past especially during the wartime era. Usually designed with an inner lining made out of various fabrics to keep the user warm. A men’s aviator jacket usually touts a tighter fit on the wrists and waist section courtesy of ribbed hems.

Still, it is not as form-fitting as the others leather jackets as not to restrict your range of motion. Overall, this is a terrific option for folks who prefer a more casual route. Much like biker jackets, a men’s bomber jacket is a classic that refuses to go away.

One of the trendy styles out there combines a sporty profile with a hint of elegance on the side. Either put on a tee or a hoodie with a slim-fitting pair of jeans in darker tones. Slip on a cap or put your hoodie to good use and add a hint of coolness with your favorite sunglasses.

Leather Field Jackets

Here we have another military-inspired piece of gear that the fashion industry has embraced over the years. Unlike regular leather jackets, utility is what it brings to the table. This comes from the pockets which can keep your gadgets or other items within reach.

It’s length is longer than your average jacket, which is why others sometimes refer to it as barn coats. It’s difficult to get it wrong, but we believe that it matches well with a polo shirt or others that have buttons. It gives off a rustic vibe which reminds us of the countryside and cowboys stuff.

To complete your cattle-wrangling attire, the appropriate hat should be the go-to headwear here. On other hand, it would likewise look dapper with dark jeans and boots. Crew neck shirts and sneakers are fantastic for a more laid back appearance,

Leather Blazers

In this list, this leans a lot toward the formal side of things. If you’re office encourages a business casual type of outfit, a leather blazer is quite adaptable enough to meet your requirements. Suede would be the best thanks to its plush texture and pliable properties.

Still, full-grain leather is equally stunning when you know what to wear it with. For the pants, most types of fabrics would do, but jeans and chinos are a good bet. Don’t worry too much, because most colors would work as long as the blazer is either in shades of black or brown, according to fashion experts.

One drawback here would be in keeping the wearer warm since leather blazers normally don’t close all the way. Nevertheless, a turtleneck or a thicker garment underneath should keep you nice and toasty. If you want to go all the way, matching leather pants will drum up your debonair style choice.

Leather Vests

Rounding out our guide is something for those who want to show their love for riding and keep their arms ventilated in warmer weather. Leather vests are another biker staple that makes you look tough and stylish at the same time.

Some leather vests can also be considered smart casual when it’s worn over the right garb. Maybe as part of a three-piece suit or other similar getups. Ideally, a regular one without any patches or logos of a motorcycle club is handy to have in your closet.

Conclusion

It’s evident that with an open mind and an eye for fashion there is a near-endless number of ways to style a leather jacket.  In the end, what really matters is that you feel good about whatever you are wearing. When there is doubt, don’t hesitate to check our guides like ours online. In fact, most retailers will answer your questions and even make suggestions.

Bob Dylan’s New Bourbon Makes the Perfect Father’s Day Gift

Ford may be making controversy by going electric these days, but the man who first whipped people up over that sort of move is still very much around — and very much in the news. Bob Dylan’s whiskey brand, Heaven’s Door, has just added a new limited-edition bourbon to its lineup — and it also happens to be the brand’s first-ever collaboration.

Partnering with Irish whiskey brand Redbreast, Heaven’s Door’s newest offering is called the Master Blender’s Edition, and the name is very valid. It was a highly collaborative effort between the two distillery’s master blenders, Ryan Perry of Heaven’s Door and Billy Leighton of Redbreast, who spent over two years creating the final product. While Dylan was not directly involved in the whiskey-making process, the musician did have a hand in sampling over a dozen blends before approving the final pick.

“Mr. Dylan is a perfectionist and knows his whiskey,” Leighton said in a press release. “His engagement and enthusiasm for this collaboration made this project even more special.”

whiskey

The Master Blender’s Edition takes Heaven’s Door’s 10-year-old straight bourbon whiskey and ages it for 15 months in retired casks that were used to age 12-Year Redbreast Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey. The 100-proof whiskey ends up developing sherry-like, dark fruit flavors that complement the bourbon’s original leathery and nutty notes.

Like the rest of Heaven’s Door’s whiskeys, the bottle that the Master Blender’s Edition comes in was designed by Dylan in his Black Buffalo Ironworks studio, while paying homage to the partnership with the addition of Redbreast’s Robin. The whiskey will be available at Reserve Bar, as well as select retailers. If you were struggling to find a Father’s Day gift, this could be it.

The 3 Main Reasons to Upgrade to the New Apple TV 4K

The new Apple TV 4K ($179+) looks and feels exactly like the company’s two previous streaming boxes, the Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, both of which are themselves getting up there in years. But the new Apple TV 4K’s internals make for a marked upgrade.

The 2021 version’s faster processor allows 4K HDR video at 60 frames per second and smooth operation of (and transition between) apps. It also sports modern creature comforts like HDMI 2.1 and support for Wi-Fi 6 to help it integrate better with more modern networks. And, maybe most excitingly, the new Apple TV 4K comes with a redesigned Siri remote, which is thicker, asymmetrical and comes with a dedicated power button.

I’ve been using the new Apple TV 4K for the past week or so, and it’s a noticeable upgrade from the previous versions I’ve been using for years. Sure, it still runs the same tvOS and it still has access to the same apps. But while the new Apple TV 4K can do everything that the old Apple TV 4K could do, it just does it all a little bit better.

So should you buy the new Apple TV 4K? The answer is if you have a 4K TV and a non-4K Apple TV streaming box: yes. If you have the old Apple TV 4K, however, it’s not as straight forward. These are the three main reasons an upgrade would make sense.

Apple

Apple TV 4K (2021)

Apple apple.com

If you stream high frame rate sports and movies.

The new Apple TV 4K is a significantly faster machine than its predecessor. With the A12 Bionic chip, it’s able to support 4K HDR at 60 fps. For reference, this is twice as much as the old Apple TV 4K, which only supports 4K HDR video at 30 fps.

The big benefit of watching 4K HDR video at 60fps is that it makes content with fast-moving action, such as live sports and action movies, look a lot more smooth and realistic. The problem, as it relates to movies, is that not everybody likes the hyper-realistic effect of a high frame rate film; this is one big reason why most Lord of the Rings fans weren’t super happy with Peter Jackson’s recent Hobbit trilogy.

As it relates to live sports, frankly there isn’t much 4K HDR at 60 fps content available yet. It was made a big deal that last year’s Super Bowl was streamed at 60 fps, but that was one of the first options. It’s well known that a lot many popular streaming apps, such as FOX Sports, NBCUniversal and Paramount+, are all working on providing more streamable content in high frame rate HDR, but it’s still early days for that.

apple tv 4k

Apple

If you hate the old Apple TV remote.

The new Siri Remote shouldn’t be your sole reason to upgrade to the new Apple TV 4K. That’s because you can buy the new Siri Remote separately. At $59, it’s pretty expensive, but it definitely solves the major problems that a lot of people have with the previous model and it will work with your existing Apple TV.

Admittedly, I’ve always had a soft spot for the old Siri Remote. I liked its small size and trackpad, although I did quite often lose it between couch cushions. But I do like the Siri Remote, too. It’s not a night-and-day overhaul compared to the previous model, but it’s definitely easier to hold and its new design makes it easier to find the power and Siri buttons in the dark.

That said, there’s definitely a learning curve for using its new five-way touch controller (which replaces the trackpad); I found myself relearning how to rewind and fast-forward videos because there’s new controls and it feels very different. And, especially at launch, the new controls (and Back button) work better when using Apple’s TV app, mostly likely because other apps — like HBO Max, Netflix and YouTube — haven’t had the chance to update their UI just yet.

All in all, if you’re not a fan of the old remote and the other features of the new 4K TV are tempting, it just might put you over the edge.

If you’re an avid Apple Arcade gamer.

If you or your kids are avid gamers and play Arcade, Apple’s subscription gaming service and you want to play those games on your big screen TV — and to do so, you need to have an Apple TV. Not all Apple Arcade games don’t really need (or benefit from) the high refresh rates that new Apple TV 4K can deliver. However, there are some sports games, like the latest NBA 2K and Ultimate Rivals, and open-word-esque games, like Oceanhorn 2, that run smoother and look nicer on the new Apple TV 4K.

The new Apple TV 4K plays the exact same Arcade games as any of Apple’s other streaming boxes — there aren’t any exclusive games. So you should probably be a really avid Apple Arcade gamer who spends a lot of time playing on their big screen to upgrade to the new Apple TV 4K. That said, Apple is always adding new games to its streaming service so this new streaming box could open up more opportunities for more intense games (especially now that you can use your Xbox or PS5 gaming controller with it).

The Ford F-150 Lightning, Revealed: Here’s What You Need to Know

How much power will the F-150 Lightning have?

The F-150 Lightning will have a dual-motor setup and full-time four-wheel-drive. In top extended range spec, the F-150 Lightning will be the most powerful stock F-150 ever: the truck will deliver 563 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque. Ford says the 0-60 mph time will be in the mid-4-second range.

How much range will the F-150 Lightning offer?

Ford does not have official EPA figures yet, but they’re targeting 300 miles for the extended range version and 230 miles for the standard version. In real driving, Ford’s Intelligent Range system will incorporate a myriad of factors from the cloud and the vehicle, including the payload, the number of passengers, weather conditions and the driver profile for a customized range estimate.

So, the F-150 Lightning can power a house?

Yes indeed. Say goodbye to noisy generators: the F-150 Lightning can come with a Ford Intelligent Backup Power system capable of sending up to 9.6 kW of power back out of the truck and into your home if the power goes out. Ford says a full charge can power a home with normal power usage for up to three days in the event of an outage (and up to 10 days if you ration usage). Plus, it will activate automatically when needed

The F-150 Lightning can deliver the same 9.6 kW of power through Ford’s Pro Power Onboard system, which features 11 power outlets combined in the bed, cabin and frunk. Ford says a full charge can both deliver a commute and power a job site for multiple days without charging.

Wait…what was that about a frunk?

The biggest frunk so far. Ford replaced the former gas engine compartment on the F-150 with the “Mega Power Frunk.” It has 14.1 cubic feet of space, enough to hold two bags of golf clubs or one checked bag and two carry-ons. It offers a dry, lockable space outside the cabin. If you want to use it as a giant shrimp cooler, it has a drain hole. It also has a low load floor for more practical use, and it has multiple charging options for setting up a portable workspace (or tailgate).

How will you be able to charge the F-150?

At home, Ford is partnering with solar company Sunrun for the installation of the 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro (which is compatible with solar power, if desired). The Extended Range model will add about 30 miles of range per hour and fully charge from 15 percent to 100 percent in eight hours with that setup.

On the road, more than 16,000 charging stations are integrated into the FordPass network. On a 150-kW fast charger, the F-150 Lightning will add up to 54 miles of range in 10 minutes and charge from 15–80 percent in 41 minutes.

How much will the F-150 Lightning be able to tow and carry?

Ford says the F-150 Lightning can carry 2,000 pounds of payload and will have up to 10,000 pounds of towing capacity. It will also have a dedicated Tow/Haul mode. Ford did not mention how much nearing those limits will affect range estimates.

What other cool tech does the Ford F-150 Lightning have?

The F-150 Lightning will have Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving technology. Lariat and Platinum trims will get Ford’s advanced Sync 4A voice control system. You get a massive 15.5-inch touchscreen. You also get many cool features from the standard F-150, like Pro Trailer Backup Assist and Onboard Scales.

How much will the F-150 Lightning cost?

The F-150 Lightning will be cheaper than many anticipated. Ford says the starting price for the entry-level F-150 Lightning model will be $39,974 before tax incentives, with the mass-market X:T version starting at $52,974. The top-trim price will be around $90,000. You can reserve one now on Ford’s website with a $100 deposit.

Finally, a Dive Computer You Can Wear to Dinner (or Anywhere Else)

Y’know, timepieces like submariners and Seiko dive watches are cool and everything — but if you want a watch specifically for, you know, actual diving, you want something like this. Garmin calls its new Descent Mk2S a “watch-style dive computer,” but it’s in fact a watch, a dive computer and a full-featured smartwatch, with a wide range of tech and applications — and it’s the smallest, most wearable model with dive computer features that the brand’s made to date.

It’s impressive how much functionality is typically packed into Garmin’s fitness-focused watches already, but offering all this with a dive computer built in at 43mm wide is most welcome for those with slimmer wrists. A 43mm diameter isn’t “small” by traditional watch measurement terms, but it should make a big difference for many who want to comfortably wear their watch in a range of situations as well as underwater. (There’s also a gargantuan 52mm version of the Descent Mk2.)

For diving, it’s got more features than we have time to enumerate, from multiple dive modes, gas mixes and dive logs to land entry and exit points using the brand’s well-known GPS capabilities. There’s a good chance that anyone interested in the dive computer functionality will also be the kind of person who might put its other outdoor and fitness features to use, and like the brand’s other smartwatches, it includes specialized sports apps (for surfing, climbing, biking, etc.), wellness tracking and metrics, as well as smart connectivity.

In other words, the Garmin Descent Mk2S does almost everything (you can check the full list of features on the brand’s site if you so choose) and will remain wearable while doing so. On top of it all, you can expect a rugged build and user friendly operation via the sapphire crystal touchscreen display. Available in three colorways of black, blue and a feminine gold/tan, each comes on a matching silicone strap for a price of $1,000.

Chevrolet Might Be About to Fix the Biggest Issue With the Silverado

The Big Three pickup truck wars are, arguably, the automotive world’s most intense competitions. Full-size trucks are the best-selling American vehicles — and the most profitable. Ford just revamped the F-150 with impressive results; Ram earned rave reviews for the luxurious current-gen 1500 pickup. The odd truck out — despite being very well, sales-wise — is the Silverado. Sales were down 20% year over year in Q1 2021, even when most of the automotive industry was up double-digits.

The good news? The Silverado is due for a refresh. And according to reports, it should resolve the biggest critique or — really, critiques — of the current model.

Chevy went a bit unconventional with the Silverado’s grille design last time around. One major issue: the Silverado’s thin, drooping side air intakes that sort of look like sideburns. . That looks set to change. A leaked Silverado drawing found by GM Authority shows a more conventional Silverado grille with squared-off air intakes below the headlights.

The Silverado’s other major point for criticism is the interior, which doesn’t quite match the F-150 and Ram 1500. GM Authority expects the new Silverado to have an all-new, more luxurious and tech-forward cockpit — presumably, more like the ones found in the Suburban and Tahoe — that could eliminate things like the column shifter. It will be a surprise if the Silverado doesn’t get GM’s well-regarded Super Cruise technology, which has expanded beyond Cadillac to the new Bolt EV.

What’s less clear is when the refresh will arrive. The pandemic reportedly delayed the Silverado/Sierra refresh to the 2022 model year, and the current automotive microchip shortage that’s causing havoc across the board could push the refresh back further still. The shortage forced GM’s truck division to sell certain Silverados and Sierras without active fuel management technology for 2021. A GM Authority report described the refresh timeline as “very fluid.”

This Might Be Your Perfect Travel Shirt

If you want to wear the same t-shirt for days on end without attracting flies, it better be made of merino wool. Merino is naturally antimicrobial, so it doesn’t stink (it also dries quicker than cotton and is more comfortable than your wool sweater memories would have you think). In 2018, a small team of Huckberry refused to change out of Proof’s Merino Tee during a 72-hour trip to Iceland to underline the point. Proof then expanded its merino collection to include a henley and a polo and, fittingly, Huckberry took another no-change trip, this time to Tofino, British Columbia, where the team hiked, canoed and flew a Cessna.

Proof’s 72 Hour Merino is available in a t-shirt, long-sleeve, polo, long– or short-sleeve henley and socks. In all but the socks, the fabric is the same: an 89/11 blend of merino wool and nylon (for stretch and durability). Proof sources the wool from three sheep stations in New Zealand and uses a super-fine 17.5-micron yarn gauge to not only guarantee that it won’t stink, but that it’ll be comfortable too.
