GM Will Remove a Very Annoying Feature from Trucks and SUVs, But Only for a Little While

Most modern cars and trucks are equipped with auto-stop/start technology. The principle behind the system is simple: it shuts off the engine when you’d otherwise be idling and wasting gas during stop-and-go driving . In practice, though, it’s a feature many drivers don’t like. Restarts can feel abrupt or jerky; the momentary delay can make quick action in traffic difficult; and the engine cutting out can sound alarming to older drivers used to less reliable cars. Many cars (for now) come also come with a switch to disable the system, but even so, that requires remembering to press an extra button every time you start the car.

But if you don’t like auto stop/start and you’re in the market for a new General Motors full-size truck or SUV, now may be the time to buy. GM has been making sacrifices to keep truck/SUV production going during the global microchip shortage. The company has already removed cylinder deactivation tech from certain vehicles; now, GM has announced it will be removing auto stop/start from certain trucks and SUVs .

The change will affect 2021 vehicles fitted with either the 5.3-liter or 6.2-liter V8 and 10-speed automatic transmission built after June 7, 2021. Those vehicles would be the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV and some editions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks.

GM is all-in on the shift to electric vehicles pledging its intent for its consumer fleet to go completely electric by 2035. So don’t expect them to explicitly advertise that, while Ford focuses on more efficient gas engines, hybrids and electric trucks, GM still builds V8 trucks and will now be selling them without an annoying fuel-saving feature. But buyers may take notice.

The Complete Guide to Sony’s Wireless Headphones and Earbuds

sony wh1000m4 headphones

Sony

Welcome to Brand Breakdown, a series of comprehensive yet easy-to-digest guides to your favorite companies, with insights and information you won’t find on the average About page.

Sony is one of the biggest names in headphones today. It make some of the most well-reviewed and most popular headphones you can buy. In recent years, Sony has also emerged as the chief rival to Bose when it comes to noise-canceling headphones. Its WH-1000xM4 and WF-1000xM4, are arguably better than Bose’s offerings.

The problem with Sony’s line is that there are a lot of different models to choose from and their naming conventions don’t make it easy. We’re here to break it down so you can decide which Sony headphones are right for you.

Sony WH-1000XM4

Sony

$349.99

$298.00 (15% off)

Release Date: August 2020

Noise-Canceling: Yes

The WH-1000XM4 are the company’s new flagship noise-canceling headphones and the direct successor to the WH-1000XM3. Sony made some subtle design tweaks to improve the comfort of the WH-1000XM4 — such as making the earpads bigger by 10 percent, rounding the headband and slimming the headband cushion. The WH-1000XM4 have have the best sound and noise-canceling abilities of Sony’s entire line. As well as a microphone array which delivers a superior call experience. Unlike their predecessors, the WH-1000XM4 can also pair via Bluetooth to two devices at once.

Sony WH-1000XM3

Sony

$348.00

Release Date: Fall 2018

Noise-Canceling: Yes

Even with the recent arrival of the WH-1000XM4, the WH-1000XM3 are still some of the best overall noise-canceling headphones you can buy. They have similar sound and noise-canceling abilities (although the WH-1000XM4 are a little better at canceling out high frequencies), and they have similar features (such as adjustable EQ and capacitive touch controls) because they work with the same companion app. If you don’t plan on taking calls on your headphones, or care about pairing them to two devices at once, the WH-1000XM3 are almost just as good as the WH-1000XM4 — and you can probably get a good deal on them. (Expect to see these discounted for under $300.)

Sony WH-CH710N

Sony

$199.99

$148.00 (26% off)

Release Date: Mid-2020

Noise-Canceling: Yes

If you’re looking for a more affordable way to get Sony noise-canceling over-ear headphones, get the WH-CH710N. That said, there are some considerable tradeoffs from the brand’s higher-priced options. The WH-CH710N don’t have the same audio or noise-canceling abilities and they lack compatibility with Sony’s Headphones app, meaning they don’t allow you to adjust the sound settings. Additionally, there’s no capacitive touch playback controls on the earcups (there are buttons instead), and headband isn’t foldable. On the plus side, they charge via USB-C and have the best battery life (up to 35 hours) of any of Sony’s wireless over-ear headphones.

Sony WH-H910N

Sony

$118.75

Release Date: Late 2019

Noise-Canceling: Yes

The WH-H910N are noise-canceling headphones that are a solid alternative for those that don’t want to spend big on Sony’s flagship cans. They are compatible with the Sony Headphones app, just like the WH-1000XM4 and the WH-1000XM3, which gives you the option to adjust the EQ or the adaptive sound control settings. The tradeoffs are that the WH-H910N don’t sound as good or have the same level of noise-canceling abilities as the Sony’s more expensive headphones. On the positive side, the WH-H910N do have excellent battery life (35 hours) and come in more color finishes, including red and orange.

Sony WH-H900N

Sony

$299.99

Release Date: Mid-2018

Noise-Canceling: Yes

The WH-H900N are the older versions of the WH-H910N and, again, are a good noise-canceling alternative for people who don’t spend big on Sony’s flagship cans. The main tradeoff between the WH-H910N and the WH-H900N comes down to the design, as the latter has a slightly less-premium look and feel. The overall sound and noise-canceling qualities don’t quite match the WH-H910N, either. Unless there’s a big price difference between the WH-H910N and the WH-H900N, I’d recommend going with the newer headphones.

Sony WHXB900N

Sony

$248.00

$178.00 (28% off)

Release Date: Mid-2019

Noise-Canceling: Yes

The WH-XB900N are noise-canceling headphones that are in Sony’s “Extra Bass” line (which is indicated by the “XB” in the product name) and they’re another budget alternative to the company’s flagship line. The biggest difference between the WH-XB900N and the WH-H910N is that the former has Sony’s Extra Bass technology that enhances low-end frequencies and delivers extra-punchy bass; if you listen to a lot of bass-heavy music then the WH-XB900N are what you want. They are also compatible with the Sony Headphones app, which allows you to adjust the EQ and noise-canceling settings.

Sony WH-XB700

Sony

$128.00

Release Date: Mid-2019

Noise-Canceling: No

The WH-XB700 are entry-level wireless on-ear headphones that are in Sony’s “Extra Bass” line, as indicated by the XB in the product name. They lack any active noise-canceling abilities, but they are still compatible with Sony’s Headphones app which allows you to tweak sound settings. They also charge via USB-C, which is still a rarity amongst wireless headphones that fall below $100.

Sony WH-CH510

Sony

Release Date: Early 2020

Noise-Canceling: No

The Sony WH-CH510 are the company’s most entry-level pair of wireless on-ear headphones. Essentially, they’re a cheaper and more basic version of the WH-XB700 headphones. They lack compatibility with the Sony Headphones app, meaning you can’t toggle with the EQ audio settings. On the plus side, they do have a great 35-hour battery life and charge via USB-C.

Sony WF-1000XM4

Sony amazon.com

$278.00

Release Date: June 2021

Noise-Canceling: Yes

The WF-1000XM4 are arguably the best noise-canceling wireless earbuds you can buy. They are the successor to the nearly two-year-old WH-1000XM3, but Sony redesigned them from the ground up so they sound more vibrant, have better noise-cancellation and have improved mics for a superior call experience. They also look and feel different; they have a more rounded design and they’re noticeably smaller  (each earbud is 10-percent smaller and the case is about 40-percent smaller). Finally, Sony gave them some new-age features like wireless charging and water-resistance (IPX4) so they feel like the new hotness.

Sony WF-1000XM3

Sony

$229.99

$178.00 (23% off)

Release Date: August 2019

Noise-Canceling: Yes

Despite being the predecessor to the WF-1000XM4, the WF-1000XM3 are still great noise-canceling wireless earbuds — and they’re also much more affordable now (they used to cost $249).
The WF-1000XM3 are compatible with Sony Headphones app, which allows you to adjust the audio and noise-canceling settings. They charge via USB-C, but don’t support wireless charging like  WF-1000XM4.

Sony WF-SP800N

Sony

$199.99

$118.00 (41% off)

Release Date: Mid-2020

Noise-Canceling: Yes

The Sony WF-SP800N are the company’s mid-range wireless earbuds with active noise-cancellation. They’re a more affordable alternative to Sony’s flagship WF-1000XM3, but they don’t have quite the same level of active noise-cancellation and overall sound quality. They do, however, work with the Sony Headphones app. The real unique thing about the Sony WF-SP800N is that they have a workout-focused design and a more rubust IP55 water-resistance rating. These are one of the few noise-canceling wireless earbuds that are optimized for working out.

Sony WF-XB700

Sony

$99.99

Release Date: Mid-2020

Noise-Canceling: No

Sony’s WF-XB700 ($130) are the company’s and most affordable wireless earbuds, and you can think of them as a direct AirPod alternatives. They’re a stripped-down version of Sony’s flagship wireless earbuds, the WF-1000XM3, as they lack the premium design and many of the premium features such as noise-canceling and transparency modes. They also aren’t compatible with Sony’s Headphones app. However, what they lack in features, they make up for in sound and price

This Is How to Get the Best Prices on Amazon

When it comes to shopping on Amazon, one of the biggest questions to consider is whether or not you’re getting the best price. Prices on the online retailer change regularly, going up and down at an algorithm’s notice. This leads to a convoluted mess that is hard to parse. Short of tracking the new price every day, it is nearly impossible to verify that the price you’re seeing is the lowest price (or even a decent price) in a product’s lifecycle. To make things even more confusing, many products on Amazon are sold by Amazon itself or any number of third-party sellers, which can lead to a long list of different prices for the same product all over the internet.

With Prime Day 2021 coming this June 21-22, there is no more important time to have all of the price information handy. If you’re looking to upgrade your TV or get a new set of headphones, Prime Day is a great time to do it. But with so many deals to be had, browsing the site for the best of the best can be disorienting. That’s why we at Gear Patrol, and many others, use the free tool CamelCamelCamel to understand if something is actually a great deal on Amazon or not. Here is how you can use the tool to get the best prices, no matter how many adjustments there have been.

What’s It Do

The free tool basically outlines Amazon’s price history and discounts for just about any product you can find. Lauded as one of the top Amazon price trackers out there, it also allows you to set notifications for price decreases on any product listed for Amazon. That’s extremely helpful if you’re shopping for a specific product and just want to hold off until the best deal is available.

Browser Extension

The easiest and best way to use CamelCamelCamel is through the browser extension. When you head to the website for the first time, you’ll be prompted to make a free account. Once you’ve done this, the browser will reload and give you the opportunity to add the extension to your browser. Install the extension, follow the prompts to head to Amazon and CamelCamelCamel takes care of you from there. The tutorial in the extension strips away any confusion and makes the entire process seem much easier than you’d think.

Historical Pricing

At your fingertips, you’ll have a graph with historical prices for Amazon alongside third-party sellers and the opportunity to set your desired price that will trigger an email notification. You’ll also see the Amazon price history for the product and be able to compare current prices between sellers. To switch to a different product, you just head to a different product page within Amazon and the extension will reload with all of the new details automatically — it is seriously too easy.

CamelCamelCamel

Ultimately, you just want the best deal. With the CamelCamelCamel extension installed, you never have to wonder if you’re getting the best price because you can see it for yourself. If you love shopping on Amazon and you love getting the best prices, don’t go another day without it.

This Is the Perfect Compromise Between Dive and Field Watch

unimatic u4 watch

Unimatic

You’re probably not going to improve on the concept of a basic tool watch by adding a lot to it. Boutique Italian microbrand Unimatic understands this, and their approach of simplifying and refining traditionally utilitarian watch styles even further has underpinned their success. The brand’s fourth and most recent watch collection is the U4, or Modello Quattro, and it takes another step in the reductionist direction that the brand’s already minimalist watches began. By subtracting, you end up with somehow more than a tool watch, as the U4 is eminently affordable with a hell of a look, to boot.

Notable

Unimatic’s debut offering, the U1 (or Modello Uno), was a strikingly pared down version of a dive watch, and the U4 is a pared down version of that, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality: Instead of a rotating diver’s bezel, it’s got a fixed bezel executed in plain steel with no markings. The result is a robustly built watch with an understated but sleek style. With a basic Seiko automatic movement inside, it’s also in the affordable range of automatic sport watches.

Who It’s For

Unimatic is straight-up one of the hippest watch brands around, generally appealing to a younger, design- and budget-conscious crowd. Though the brand stays true to the tool watch ethos with solid specs and build quality that’d surely hold up in the field, its appeal is more military-chic than that of a true “beater.” The U4 will satisfy the watch nerd that obsesses over design, fetishizes ruggedness and appreciates its under-the-radar, in-the-know status that the Italian brand has cultivated.

Alternatives

It’s hard to think of many watches that can be directly compared with the U4. With an aesthetic/use case parked firmly between a dive watch (like the Unimatic U1) and a field watch (Unimatic U2), the U4’s ideal owner might be interested in either of those broad genres, or neither. So what does the U4 offer specifically? A general tool watch with a minimalist, military-inspired design. That exact combination of elements might be hard to pin down, but there are some other options in the same price range:

Visually, the Victorinox INOX ($495+) has a similarly chunky footprint with a bold bezel and crown guards that take it in a more modern direction than the average field watch. It comes in a range of colors and iterations, including different case materials, as well as quartz and automatic options. What it lacks is Unimatic’s design sensibility and personality.

In a more traditional field-watch vein is Hamilton’s Khaki Field King that offers a slimmer profile and Swiss automatic movement starting at a retail price of $575. In the dive watch realm, a Seiko Samurai has some visual similarity with its angular case and can often be found for less than its retail price of $525.

Zen Love

Review

The Unimatic U4 is almost a dive watch. Although it’s 300m water-resistant and features the same case and bezel profile as the brand’s U1 diver, the bezel is devoid of markings and doesn’t turn. We’re left with a wearing experience that’s like that of a dive and a field watch at the same time, and yet neither.

Maybe we don’t have to worry about exactly what to call it aside from a handsome, affordable, rugged and downright stylish casual watch. Its specs and pragmatic design make the U4 reassuringly robust, but Unimatic ultimately stands out most for its tasteful design sense and the buzz that surrounds it.

Yes, the young brand’s production runs regularly sell out quickly, with models often trading on the secondhand market for above retail prices. Limited-edition, sometimes quirky collaborations further paint Unimatic as a phenomenon in the watch and fashion spaces — the brand’s “Made in Italy” angle doesn’t hurt their image, either.

unimatic u4 watch side view

Zen Love

In other words, Unimatic is one of the hottest microbrands around, and its popularity is built on a solid foundation of value and the principles that make classic sport watches themselves so enduring. The U4 feels solid and is highly legible, with a simple and clear dial with plenty of contrast and C3 Super-LumiNova that glows a pale green in the dark — though more brightly on the hands than on the indices.

Unimatic’s own website doesn’t blow smoke in your face about their simple formula and calls this Modello Quatro (U4) a “military take on the iconic Modello Uno” (U1). Its military theme is expressed through its generally stark, brutalist design, but is most overtly communicated by the olive-green nylon strap paired to its black dial. It nails the look, but I found the included strap slightly uncomfortable and immediately started wearing the U4 more often after switching it to a soft, green seatbelt-style NATO from B&R Bands ($25).

The U4 was made to be worn with a strap like this, but NATOs do tend to add bulk — and though measuring only 40mm in diameter, the case’s chunky proportions further amplify its presence: the bezel stands high from the case middle and the case back extends below. Slim-wristed wearers might want to try it on a two-piece leather or rubber strap to cut down on its height and visual heft.

unimatic u4 glow in the dark feature of watch

Zen Love

An overall angular design also makes it sit prominently on the wrist, and a closer examination of its all-brushed surfaces reveals some interesting details, with the bezel itself boasting multiple facets. The crown has a grippy texture and is decorated with a cool design. The same mix of stark elements and thoughtful design characterizes the dial: instead of the typical positioning of the brand name at 12 o’clock, placing it at 6 o’clock leaves the rest of the dial feeling very open — and somewhat reminiscent of unbranded vintage military watches.

“Simple, tough and functional” seems to describe Unimatic’s design approach, and it also describes pretty well the automatic movement they chose to power the U4: With a 41-hour power reserve, the Seiko NH35 is the same as the 4R35 that’s found reliably driving many modern Seiko watches in collections like Presage and Prospex. You really can’t complain about it, as more premium offerings such as the Miyota 9015 (and related) or Swiss movements would inevitably drive up the price.

Verdict

You’re going to get respect from watch guys and style-savvy types with something like the Unimatic U4 on your wrist, but even without that validation it should prove a fun and capable watch for those attracted to the aesthetic. It also does all this for not a ton of cash, and this reviewer’s respect for it grew over the time spent wearing it. It’s impressive that Unimatic makes such a classic style and simplified design actually stand out in a crowded space.

Toyota Says We’ll Be ‘Blown Away’ by the New Tundra’s Engine

For years now, the Toyota Tundra has languished in the second tier of full-size pickup trucks on sale here in the United States. That’s not for any lack of capability, mind you; it’s largely just that American truck buyers are incredibly brand-loyal, making it hard to woo buyers to trade in their Fords, Chevys, GMCs and Rams no matter how dependable and reliable your truck may be.

In part, perhaps, as a result, Toyota hasn’t exactly fast-tracked a new Tundra. The current model has been on sale for almost 14 years now with few changes — a timeframe in which by contrast, Ford has rolled out the 12th-, 13th- and 14th-generation versions of the F-Series. That’s finally set to change later this year, when Toyota will roll out an all-new third-gen Tundra — and as it turns out, it may have an engine capable of humbling its foes.

That’s the word from Motor Trend, through and interview with Toyota North America executive vice president of sales, Bob Carter. Carter informed MT that the new 2022 Tundra will pack two all-new powerplants: the standard one will be “a core powertrain that’s substantially more powerful in terms of horsepower and torque than the current V8,” according to Carter, while the optional one will reportedly employ new technology “that will blow you away.”

“We have our concept and our own technology,” Carter told MT. “We’re in it to win it.”

Enigmatic, sure — but not so much that we can’t draw some reasonable assumptions. First off, if the standard setup makes more power and torque than the outgoing Tundra’s 5.7-liter V8, that means it makes more than 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque — and Carter said it’s “substantially” more powerful, which means we’d predict figures of at least, say, 400 horses and 420 lb-ft. Given all the rumors and reports that Toyota is moving away from its venerable V8 in the Land Cruiser in favor of turbo V6 power, we’re guessing the 2022 Tundra will do the same.

What, then, of the optional powertrain? Well, if it’s an option, it’s presumably more powerful than the base engine. That could mean the twin-turbo V8 that Toyota may be working on, but that doesn’t seem to fit the bill of a distinct concept or Toyota’s “own technology.” Toyota has been to known to dabble hydrogen powertrains, but the lack of infrastructure that stymies the Mirai means there wouldn’t be much of a market for it.

No, if we had to guess about a way to make a more powerful truck that’s distinctly Toyota, we’d have to guess hybrid. After all, the Prius is largely synonymous with the tech, and in recent years, Toyota has been on a quiet spree of spreading that tech across its lineup — the RAV4, the Highlander, the Sienna. And Ford’s hybrid F-150 PowerBoost notwithstanding, hybrid trucks have yet to achieve much prominence — so Toyota could help play a role in defining the category.

How it might differ from the PowerBoost (or, say, the Ram 1500‘s mild-hybrid eTorque setup), well, that remains to be seen. But if Toyota can match or beat the F-150 hybrid’s 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque, well, it’ll be pretty damn exciting. We’ll find out more closer to when the 2022 Tundra enters production in September.

Andy Warhol’s Patek Philippe Watch Can Be Yours, But Act Fast

One of the most celebrated names in 20th century art, together with one of the most prestigious names in watchmaking, adds up to an auction lot that’s sure to grab your attention. That’s what Christie’s is offering with Andy Warhol’s Patek Philippe Calatrava today — and the watch is estimated to go for between $45,000 and $95,000.

In addition to Warhol and Patek, this particular gold Calatrava reference 570 has another name associated with it: Hausmann & Co. This Italian retailer might not be as well known, but its wordmark on the dial makes the watch even more interesting, as it’s what collectors refer to as a “double-signed” watch. Something like the collab watches of their day, vintage examples with the name or logo of a second company on the dial can imbue a watch with story, character and interesting provenance.

Andy Warhol is known to have had an impressive watch collection and is quoted as saying that he wears a Cartier Tank without even winding it simply because “it’s the watch to wear.”

In addition to this Calatrava, Warhol known to have had other Pateks, Rolexes and Piagets as well — he’s thought to have once owned over 300 watches. The manually wound Calatrava for auction from Christie’s is 18k gold, measures 35.5mm and is dated to 1954, and its formal, elegant style provides an interesting contrast to the artist’s playful style.

All 117 of the rare and interesting lots from Christie’s “Watches Online: the York Edition” auction are available to view and bid on right now, from June 8th, through June 22, 2021.

These New Bikes and Accessories Can Conquer Any Surface

In case you missed it, the past weekend was a big one in the gravel biking world. The sport’s most iconic event, Unbound Gravel, came back strong. The Flint Hills of Emporia, Kansas were thick with a colorful crowd of bikes and riders — 2,800 cyclists ranging in age from 11 to 88 representing 48 states and 28 countries.

In the end, a couple of hard-charging 30-year-olds — Ian Boswell and Lauren De Crescenzo — claimed the signature 200-mile race’s highest honors, but the big winner was the sport itself, which has a bright future as the world opens back up.

The industry itself has a promising outlook too, not only on gravel but on roads and mountains. The latest product drops provide plenty of inspiration to get out and pedal just about anywhere.

Custom Laces That Give Your Kicks a Classic Look

It was only a matter of time. With the boom of the vintage — or at least retro-tinged — sneakers comes a surging secondary market: custom laces, aging services (including DIY markers), restoration appointments and the ilk. There are already defined voices within the fledgling industry, which has only accelerated since the release of Netflix and ESPN’s The Last Dance. However, one such retailer remains quick to confirm they’d been around well before the documentary dropped: Singapore-based lace company Foxtrot Uniform.

Yo Fox!, as the company’s colloquially known, began as an Instagram page dedicated to documenting the founding duo’s ever-growing collection of vintage Jordan 1s. A popular post syndicated by dozens of mood board accounts fast-tracked the pair’s ascension. What began as a page for archival work quickly transitioned to making products of their own. Together, they adopted the joint pseudonym “Fox” but typed out in iOS’ emoji font.

foxtrot laces and sneakers

Foxtrot Uniform

“It started with the fascination for the fade on the laces that come with the Royal AJ1 and me wanting to have replacement laces for my 85s in the right weave,” Fox says. “[After] making a batch for myself and ‘maybe’ some OG heads, the community ate it up, and ever since we’ve been dedicating our time to making the best laces in the world for vintage and retro lovers.”

The laces are available in an array of dyes, oftentimes released alongside an ultra-anticipated drop — think the Jordan x Union collab. The trick is to then swap out the standard laces with ones more complementary or perhaps a set that offers contrast. Either way, it’s a stab at personalizing a pair of kicks countless others copped, too. For Fox, “the goal is to bridge the gap between designer and you.”

With colors like Fade-Away Grape, Oval Cream, Pine and Kentucky, the chosen hues pay obvious homage to iconic sneaker color sets. They can be applied to the sneakers they’re named after or added to another altogether. It’s up to you. If you own any vintage Jordan 1s, though, particularly a pair from their debut year, 1985, these laces might look and feel familiar. (You should also seek out some legal advice on selling those, too.)

foxtrot fade away guava laces

Foxtrot Uniform

“Our laces replicate the weave of 1985 Nike basketball laces, meaning they are custom woven to our specifications to mimic the nuances of ’80s sportswear,” Fox told us over IG. “We are not a drop ship company that resells stock laces from a supplier catalog.”

Contrary to the kinds of laces you’ll find lining the shelves at chain stores across the country, these are wider than usual (but not “fat”), custom-dyed and boast a higher thread count. But Yo Fox! didn’t stop at laces. Since launching their online store in June 2020, they’ve expanded it to include expensive vintage Jordan collections (which they’ve hunted down and stocked themselves), lace accessories (barbed wire, eye stay plugs), socks and sneaker stain markers, which afford a vintage look to brand-new kicks.

“After replicating most of the colors in the Nike catalog from the ’80s, we started to produce our own vintage fade colors with the same approach,” Fox says. “We double dye them to replicate 35 years of fade found on vintage Jordans.” They’re meticulous about the products they push to market but for good reason: vintage and modern sneaker shoppers alike are obsessive. The quality’s there, though. Yo Fox!’s drops happen sort of sporadically, can be previewed with a top-secret password and are first come first serve when the site opens.

The Ford Maverick Is a Whole New Kind of Pickup Truck

ford maverick 2022 compact pickup truck

Ford

A couple of years back, when Ford announced that it would be effectively giving up on traditional cars in America (apart, of course, from the Mustang), there were plenty of people who thought Ford was giving up, period. After all, cars like the Focus, Fusion and Taurus might not have roamed the plains in the mighty numbers they once did, but they were hardly going extinct; why forsake all those buyers who prioritize fuel economy and affordability over ride height?

Of course, as the old saying goes, when God closes a door, he opens a window — and the axiom also applies to automotive product planning. With Ford’s sedans having followed its minivans and station wagons into American retirement, the carmaker saw something of, as they put it, “a white space” in the market.

““We wanted to [show up in the affordable product space] in a way that Ford uniquely could,” Jim Baumbick, Ford’s vice-president of global product planning and strategy told us. “We’ve had fits and starts in [the car] product spaces, but our fundamental strategy is to lean into our strengths.”

And as the F-150 has shown, if there’s one thing Ford does well, it’s build trucks.

So, the brand set about creating a new type of entry-level vehicle — something that could leverage Ford’s truck-and-SUV skills but also appeal to buyers who previously hadn’t shopped for pickups. Something with the price point and fuel efficiency of a compact car, but also with the flexibility that only comes with a truck bed. (“Think of all the things you can do in a truck that you would have to struggle, or can’t do, in a sedan,” as Baumbeck put it — or simply ask one of the millions of pickup truck owners in the United States today.)

And so, Ford created the Maverick.

Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

The 2022 Ford Maverick is a 40-mpg hybrid

And that’s not an optional engine; that’s the base version. The Ford Maverick comes standard with a 2.5-liter inline-four hybrid powertrain, delivering 191 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. Ford predicts that should be good for around 37 miles per gallon in the combined cycle; drive in the city alone, and that should climb to around 40 mpg.

At launch, the hybrid engine only comes paired with front-wheel-drive, and the only gearbox that links engine to wheels is an electronic CVT. If you really want all-wheel-drive and the hybrid, though, it might be added down the line; as Baumbick put it, “we’ll be looking at the opportunity down the road to expand the offering.”

Need more power? There’s an engine for that too

If you’re like many of us, however, you probably want your truck to have four driven wheels, not two. Or maybe you just want a little more power out of your ride. Or maybe both. In either case, Ford has something for that, as well: an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that makes 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. It’s connected to either the front wheels or all four via an eight-speed automatic.

It’s no Focus RS, but the Maverick shouldn’t drive too much like a truck

The Maverick uses the same C2 platform as the Bronco Sport — which is to say, the same platform as the Escape and the no-longer-sold-domestically fourth-generation Focus. That means it joins the Honda Ridgeline and the forthcoming Hyundai Santa Cruz among the thin-but-growing ranks of unibody pickup trucks — as opposed to the burlier body-on-frame chassis used by the rest of the pickup world.

What’s that mean for buyers? Well, we won’t know until we drive it, but we expect the Maverick should drive much like the Bronco Sport, albeit with the added high-speed stability that comes with a longer wheelbase. Every Maverick comes in crew-cab short bed configuration, as well, so they’ll all boast the same wheelbase length.

Advanced driving aids and safety features can be yours, of course

Every Maverick, from the basic XL model that starts under $20K before destination through the mid-level XLT to the fully loaded Lariat, comes packing automatic car- and pedestrian-detecting emergency braking, automatic headlights and automatic high beams. Five drive modes — normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul and Slippery — also come standard.

Tick the right boxes, and you can also add stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane centering, blind-spot warning sonar, hill descent control and other such active safety features. Opt for the FX4 off-road package on the AWD versions, and you get all-terrain tires, an upgraded cooling system, skid plates, a tow hitch and exposed tow hooks, among other upgrades.

This little truck can handle 1,500 pounds of payload

Granted, that includes the interior capacity and the weights of all your passengers. Still, even if you manage to cram a quintet of 200-pound adults inside, that means you still have roughly 500 pounds of leftover capacity to lug whatever you can toss into the bed. (And, thanks to a lower bed height than other trucks, it’s easier for everyone to put stuff back there or dig it out.)

The Maverick can tow up to two tons, depending on model

Every Maverick is capable of lugging around 2,000 pounds on a trailer hitch, according to Ford. However, if you want maximum towing potential, you’ll want to level up to the 2.0-liter engine, as that’s the only way to level up to the 4,000-lb towing capability.

The FlexBed is what Ford calls a “maker space”

Stripping away the marketing jargon, that means Ford wants owners to customize their Mavericks’ beds however they want. Six tie-downs mean it’s easy to secure objects inside if the 4.5-foot-long bed doesn’t have enough space with the tailgate closed (or also if you simply don’t want your items bouncing around).

Hack the bed as needed

Ford even went so far as to make it easier for owners to rig up their own bed storage and usage solutions by designing the FlexBed to use 2x4s and 2x6s as vertical and horizontal dividers. Plus, it comes pre-wired with two 12-volt, 20-amp electrical hookups, making it easy to rig up cargo bay lighting or other powered devices that can run off the truck. (If you’d rather have Ford handle that sort of thing, though, you can also spec the Maverick with 110-volt AC power outlets and LED lights in the bed from the factory.) And if you’re hard-up for ideas on how how to make your Maverick your own, there’s a QR code in the bed that provides suggestions.

There’s storage in there, too

Unlike, say, the Ridgeline or Santa Cruz, the Maverick doesn’t have a trunk in the bed — and unlike the F-150 Lightning, it needs the space in front for the gas engine. Still, the FlexBed even includes storage cubbies in the sides, giving owners a bit of hideaway space back there.

Tech and convenience are central to the Maverick interior

These days, even affordable rides need to pack plenty of modern tech into their interiors. The Maverick may be a new entry-level model for the Ford family, but it still comes standard with an eight-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, on-board wifi capability and a pair of USB ports, on top of the usual suite of features that were optional on cars not long ago but now come standard pretty much everywhere (keyless entry, power locks and windows, automatic climate controletc.)

Depending on trim level, the Maverick comes with either cloth or ActiveX leatherette upholstery. Either way, though, Ford made sure to use interesting contrasts and dashes of accent color beyond the traditional gray/beige/black combos traditional found in many a car.

A wireless charger is available, as well as up to four USB ports. And if you’re the type of person who considers their car their primary stereo, you might want to level up to the Lariat just for the optional Bang & Olufsen-sourced eight-speaker stereo.

Ford made sure to pack the Maverick’s interior full of places for gear

If there’s one advantage cars and SUVs have over pickup trucks when it comes to storage, it’s that they have covered, inaccessible places to store cargo. To help compensate for that deficiency, Ford made sure the Maverick offers lockable storage under the second row of seats, giving owners a place to store many of the knick-knacks that usually roll around their trunks.

Likewise, the doors have been designed with pockets tailor-made to hold large water bottles in an upright position — or, if you prefer, to let tablets lay flat on their side without falling out when you hit your first cloverleaf.

The Maverick starts at $19,995

When the Maverick goes on sale this fall, it’ll do so with a starting price of $19,995 before destination, making it the most affordable vehicle in the company’s lineup (and, presumably, putting another nail in the coffin of the little-loved EcoSport that currently holds that role). That’s more affordable than a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, if only by a little — and, as Ford is all too happy to point out, neither of those cars will get 40 mpg in the city, let do any of the truck-specific things the Maverick can do. We have a sneaking suspicion that Ford is gonna sell a lot of these.

The 5 Best Gooseneck Kettles to Improve Your Pour Over Technique

You can get a really good cup of coffee from a drip coffee maker. But if you’re about to get into the nitty gritty of pour-over coffee, you’re going to need a gooseneck kettle. Gooseneck kettles essentially swap out the stout little spout of regular kettles with an elongated, curvy spout that prioritizes precision over speed. It’s why coffee connoisseurs who brew pour-over coffees only use gooseneck kettles — it’s to accurately hit those dry spots of coffee grounds that need just a bit more water to kickstart or induce extraction.

That’s not to say gooseneck kettles aren’t good for anything else that requires hot water. Just know that if you’re trying to up your coffee game, a gooseneck kettle is definitely part of the equation. There are a bunch of options on the market — whether they be electric or stove top — or allow you to get them to the exact temperature you want, so we found the five that should suit each and every one of your kettle needs. From the crème de la crème of gooseneck kettles to an OG in the category, here are the five best gooseneck kettles of 2021.

Best Overall Gooseneck Kettle: Fellow Stagg EKG

Fellow Stagg EKG

Fellow amazon.com

$149.00

  • Fast and accurate heating
  • Holds temperature for one hour
  • Dial in the exact temperature
  • Exterior attracts dust
  • Pricey

Every coffee-loving nerd also loves Fellow’s Stagg EKG, found in almost every specialty coffee shop in the world. It also happens to be the kettle of choice at the World Brewers Cup, the Specialty Coffee Association’s yearly coffee brewing competition.

The kettle sits atop and minimally intrusive base that features a tiny LCD screen that lets you see the temperature of the water inside. Users can set the kettle to anywhere between 135 degrees and 212 degrees Fahrenheit using the oddly satisfying dial, and Stagg EKG’s PID controller maintains that temperature for up to an hour. If you’re more comfortable using Celsius, you can toggle between that and Fahrenheit with ease. A built-in timer is made for timing your pour over, though if you own the Stagg EKG, you probably already own a scale with a built-in timer. Overall the kettle performs as well as it looks — it’s for the person who obsesses pour over technique as much as they obsess over design and aesthetics.

Best Budget Gooseneck Kettle: Bonavita Variable Temperature Electric Kettle

Bonavita Variable Temperature Electric Kettle

Bonavita amazon.com

$99.99

$52.09 (48% off)

  • Ergonomic handle
  • The kettle and stand opt of function over form

Bonavita makes exceptional coffee brewers and coffee-adjacent products. Its electric gooseneck kettle is a wonderful budget alternative that still lets you fine tune your water temperature — between 140 degrees and 212 degrees Fahrenheit — and will hold temperatures up to 208 degrees Fahrenheit for up to an hour. The kettle comes with preset brewing temperatures, and you can see what each temperature is good for in the manual. If you already have your own desired temperatures in mind, you can add it to the preset menu so you’re not always having to set it manually. The kettle doesn’t heat up water as fast as other kettles on this list, but also it’s not as expensive as other kettles on this list.

Best Stovetop Gooseneck Kettle: Hario Buono Gooseneck Kettle

Hario V60 Buono Kettle

Hario williams-sonoma.com

$62.00

  • Works on all stovetops
  • Generous water storage
  • Lacks a built-in thermostat for exact temperature control

Brand loyalty might tell you to buy a Hario V60 gooseneck kettle to go with your Hario V60 pour-over dripper. Even if you don’t have a Hario dripper, its kettle is still a pretty good buy. It works on all stovetop surfaces, and because it has no electrical components, you can more easily clean the whole kettle without worrying about causing any malfunctions.

The design of the spout makes it so water comes out more easily without having to tilt the whole kettle as much, which is just a good design point. The only downside to the kettle is its lack of a built-in thermometer. If you’re brewing coffee, you’ll want your water to be anywhere between 195 degrees and 205 degrees Fahrenheit, per the Specialty Coffee Association’s recommended pour-over protocols. Because you can’t fine tune how hot your water gets, the next best thing is to turn off the heat as soon as the kettle sounds like it’s about to boil, then let it sit for about a minute to ensure you don’t burn your grounds.

Best Entry-Level Gooseneck Kettle: Cosori Electric Gooseneck Kettle

Cosori Electric Gooseneck Kettle

Cosori amazon.com

$69.99

  • Five preset temperatures
  • Affordable
  • No precise temperature control
  • Feels too much like a knockoff of Fellow
  • Small capacity

For those who aren’t as nit-picky about getting their water to an exact temperature, Cosori’s gooseneck kettle is a good bet. It’s almost identical to Fellow’s Stagg EKG, except Cosori’s kettle is a bit more stout and rounded, and it doesn’t have the same precise temperature. Instead, the Cosori kettle has five preset temperatures, which it deems the best for various types of tea and coffee. The kettle has a hold function, which keeps the water at the desired temperature for up to an hour. The power cord is noticeably longer than others on this list, and it makes it feel less restrictive to where you can plug it in.

Best Fellow Stagg EKG Alternative: Cuisinart GK-1 Digital Gooseneck Kettle

Courtesy

Cuisinart GK-1 Digital Gooseneck Kettle

Cuisinart amazon.com

$99.99

  • Affordable and comparable option to the Fellow Stagg EKG
  • Loud Cuisinart branding

From looks to functionality, Cuisinart’s GK-1 kettle is pretty much the doppelgänger to Fellow’s Stagg EKG. It offers temperature variability between 140 degrees and 212 degrees Fahrenheit, which is just slightly smaller than Fellow’s range of 135 degrees and 212 degrees Fahrenheit (though it begs the question as to who really needs those five degrees). It heats up just as fast as the Stagg EKG, but can only maintain temperatures for half an hour. The GK-1 has .1 liter more capacity than its competitor, too, and for $50 less than Fellow’s kettle, it could be a worthy alternative.
