Looking for Buffalo Trace Bourbon? Keep Tabs on the Whiskey Aisle at Trader Joe’s

Every whiskey shopper knows Buffalo Trace and products from Buffalo Trace DistilleryEagle Rare, the Wellers, Blanton’s, E.H. Taylor Jr. collection among them — have become more difficult to find (and more expensive) with every passing year. What’s a bourbon head to do?

Well, check the liquor aisle at Trader Joe’s, maybe.

As recently spotted on the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau’s (TTB) label registry feed, Trader Joe’s forthcoming Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bottled at barrel proof — and Buffalo Trace is named in the brewer section.

However exciting, keen readers might question the validity of Buffalo Trace — a distillery that can’t keep its product on shelves at seemingly any price — selling its stocks to a grocery store for private label sale. It’s a fair point, and why the whiskey inside these bottles is likely produced at Buffalo Trace’s cousin-distillery Barton in Bardstown, Kentucky. Also owned by Sazerac, Barton produces all 1792 brand whiskeys and a number of smaller brands like Thomas S. Moore and Very Old Barton.

What’s more, we know Barton whiskey is making its way into other grocery stores, after the news that Costco’s in-store Kirkland brand will be sourced from Barton as well, per The Whiskey Wash. And though the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky is specifically named, the application later reads: “PRINCIPAL PLACE OF BUSINESS USED IN LIEU OF BOTTLING LOCATION…” Considering we’re already reading the tea leaves to an extent, we’re guessing it’s not Buffalo Trace Distillery hooch inside the bottles.

If you’re unfamiliar, the TTB is, among other duties, responsible for regulating liquor labeling, and every new and redesigned label must first earn its approval before the whiskey is sold. This means every whiskey maker must apply for approval months in advance to a bottle’s eventual release period, and applications are publicly available through its site.

So we don’t know exactly when these bottles will hit shelves — but we do know they’re coming to Trader Joe’s, which sells spirits in every state a grocer is permitted to, sometime soon. Given the store’s penchant for low prices, we can safely assume this barrel-proof bourbon will be a solid deal.

Jeep Just Made the Wrangler Rubicon Even More Badass

At long, long last, Ford has begun production on the new 2021 Bronco, and the long-awaited first drive impressions of the new SUV will arrive very soon. So, not surprisingly, Jeep — as it did before the Bronco launch — decided to swoop in and announce some major Wrangler updates. The brand is giving the Wrangler a new Xtreme Recon package, which will negate any on-paper “best-in-class” claims from the Bronco.

2021 jeep® wrangler rubicon 392

Stellantis

jeep wrangler detroit, june, 2021

Barry Hathaway

The Wrangler’s Xtreme Recon package will offer a 1.5-inch factory lift and 35-inch tires from the factory; the Bronco had been doing that with the Sasquatch package while the Wrangler had not. Adding that package improves the Wrangler’s approach (47.4º), breakover (26.7º) and departure (40.4º) angles.

Xtreme Recon also bumps the Wrangler up to 12.9 inches of ground clearance and water fording capability of 33.6 inches. Ford had been claiming best-in-class for the Bronco with 11.6 inches and 33.5 inches, respectively. You never know when that extra 0.1 inches of water fording capability will come in handy.

Customers can order a Wrangler with the Xtreme Recon package today, with deliveries due to start in August (which will still be before many buyers have their Bronco). No word on pricing, and it’s not on the online configurator yet.

Jeep is also giving the Wrangler Rubicon a new 4.88.1 axle ratio option. Paired with the six-speed manual transmission, the Rubicon would have an industry-first 100:1 crawl ratio. Jeep says buyers will be able to order that later in 2021.

We can’t tell you how the Bronco shakes out against the Wrangler yet (we will soon, we promise). But Jeep debuting the plug-in hybrid 4xe Wrangler (no hybrid for the Bronco), the Wrangler Rubicon 392 with a V8 (no V8 on the Bronco) and now an Xtreme Recon package (neatly matching or exceeds capabilities of the Bronco) suggests that Jeep is taking the new threat very seriously.

Seth Rogen Uses This $600 Gravity Bong. Why?

Gravity bongs are filled with ingenuity. Making your own grav bong is easy in theory, but there’s a level of MacGyver-ing involved that leads to creations and innovations with objects as simple as the bottle (milk jug, Hawaiian Punch bottle) or larger water receptacle (bucket, plastic bin).

Stündenglass — “hourglass” in German and owned by vaporizer company Grenco Sciences — takes that ingenuity and creativity to another level with its gravity hookah, made of borosilicate glass and aircraft-grade anodized aluminum.

According to Timothy Cotter-Patenaude, marketing director at Stündenglass, the company’s founder story begins in 2012 with Tracey Huston, an Apple employee at the time, wanted to retire his own at-home grav bong set-up for something… that wasn’t a jug and a bucket. As the patriarch of a large family who didn’t have time to sesh, he enjoyed the ability to take one big hit, but wanted to improve the grav bong experience and design.

A family friend who knew Seth Rogen gifted the stoner-celeb a prototype of the Stündenglass. Rogen proceeded to put a video of him using it on social media, where it went viral. Huston began selling the Stündenglass out of his garage.

What began as a passion project became a new business venture in 2020, when Grenco Sciences invested in Stündenglass and hired Huston. Now, you’re likely to find Stündenglass in weed cafes and hookah lounges. But should you shell out $600 to have one in your home?

      Stündenglass

      Gravity Hookah

      Stündenglass stundenglass.com

      $599.95

      What’s Good

Easy to Use: The Stündenglass is easier, and less risky, to use compared to the traditional gravity bong. There’s no anxiety of ruining your weed by getting it wet, the mechanics of the Stündenglass allow for smooth, flavorful hits every time. It’s also exponentially classier than using a literal bucket and jug.

In an age where cannabis consumption involves apps and haptics, it’s a breath of fresh air to use something more analog that’s just as science-y. Seeing gravity work its magic and fill the Stündenglass with smoke felt like I, a cool adult scientist, was in charge of a cool adult science experiment. The base is incredibly sturdy, meaning you won’t tip anything over while you’re flipping the glass. The smoke is smooth and easy to ingest, and the high from it is body-encompassing. The Stündenglass fills with enough smoke to share between two people for a comfortable high, but if taking a single, very large hit is more your style, Stündenglass can accomplish that without destroying your lungs. Overall, the high you get from Stündenglass is cleaner than one from a regular bong.

      steam coming out of bong

      Amanda Reed

Zero-Contact Smoking: The contactless delivery on the Stündenglass is incredibly effective. In the era of COVID-19, where our perception of germs has been heightened and we definitely don’t want to use something that someone else’s mouth has been in contact with, the product is less grimy than passing around a hookah wand or bong. And, it’s backed by trusted stoners. Along with Rogen, rapper Wiz Khalifa is also a fan and frequently posts videos using the Stündenglass on his Instagram stories.

Not Just for Getting High: The versatility of Stündenglass is also impressive. On top of using it with flower, hookah and wood chips, you can also attach a dab rig — either an e-nail or a regular banger — to the device. So, despite its hefty price tag, you’re getting at least four devices in one. According to Cotter-Patenaude, there are plans to make more attachments to Stündenglass, including a tea and coffee brewing attachment. Added with the product’s 10-year warranty, that means you could be using Stündenglass to make an entire breakfast. If you’re looking for some ideas to really stretch Stündenglass’ capabilities, take a look at the product’s subreddit.

      light the bong

      Amanda Reed

      What’s Not Good

That $600, Though… : The price is pretty steep, objectively. And, although it is a hit among celebs, it might not be a hit among the stoner plebeians, no pun intended. “I can’t imagine it being 50 times better than what I can make it [sic] home for $10,” Reddit user DeadpotSociety wrote.

Tricky to Assemble: Per my crafty partner who loves building Ikea furniture, the Stündenglass instructions are like “diet Ikea instructions.” The videos on the company’s YouTube channel are definitely a must-watch to get an idea of how to use the Stündenglass. Although Cotter-Patenaude said it’s easy to set-up, there are a lot of parts that look the same upon first glance (e.g., the hookah wand and the upstems). The product could definitely benefit from marking the parts using lettered stickers.

Multi-Use … If You Have the Tools: Smoking alcohol and food using the Stündenglass is difficult without the proper tools. You need a blowtorch, wood chips and a smoking hood to do so — all of which are sold separately as of this writing. Although Stündenglass often markets the device as a smoker, official Stündenglass smoking hoods aren’t available yet on the site. Because I am a very middle-class journalist and lazy minimalist with average taste who doesn’t want to buy extra things, I tried using what I had on hand (a lighter and a large piece of Tupperware) to upgrade my Old Crow whiskey ginger and grilled cheese into a five-star meal. It didn’t really work, mostly because I didn’t have a blowtorch. If you’re really into dabs, you probably already have one, but not everyone is, including me, since “long hair,” “fire,” and “apartment” don’t really mix.

      infusing food with smoke
Using a grav bong to pump smokey flavor into food is a bit extra, but it kind of rules.

      Amanda Reed

      Alternatives

You can always make your own grav bong, purchase a separate hookah and smoker and just let all three devices be separate devices. There are also Stündenglass knock-offs on the internet. Additionally, there’s the Infinity Waterfall, which also brands itself as a multi-functional gravity pipe, and Freeze Pipe’s Gravity Bong.

      Verdict

If you want to invest in a piece that does a lot, makes a statement and functions as a part of your home, sure. The contactless delivery really sets the Stündenglass apart from other devices on the market and the device has a lot of versatility. But if you don’t really like hookah, don’t have a desire to smoke food, or you’re not super into gravity-related devices, it might be worth passing if your regular bong makes you happy.

Pellet Grills and Smokers Are the Outdoor Cooking Alternative You Need This Summer

The Gear Patrol Podcast is our weekly roundtable discussion focused on products, their stories, and the culture surrounding them.

In this episode, Editor Will Price joins to talk about the newest–and perhaps least-well-known–type of grill: the pellet grill. (Or to be more precise, pellet grills and smokers.) Will makes the case that pellet grills and smokers, which have been around only since the mid-Eighties and benefit from precision computer controls, are a super low-effort alternative to charcoal and gas grills, particularly if you’re slow cooking food like ribs or brisket.

Will talks about how the things actually work and how they’re best used, the benefits and (very few) downsides to the category, and offers plenty of advice for pellet grill and smoker novices and pros alike. He ends with a rundown of our top three recommendations for pellet grill and smoker shoppers. If you’re interested in a “set it and forget it” approach to grilling and cooking out this summer, this one’s definitely for you.

Audi Has a Colossal Change Coming in the Next Few Years

Audi has an established identity in the automotive world. We know the brand for its sophisticated German styling, spectacular quattro all-wheel drive technology and punchy five-cylinder engines. However, what Audi means is about to change dramatically. The company just announced the biggest change in its history as part of a new “strategic alignment.” The Audi brand is going fully electric worldwide, almost.

We knew Audi was ramping up EV production with vehicles like the E-Tron GT sport sedan and the sexy Q4 E-Tron crossover. The company plans to have 20 “e-models” launched by 2025. Hopefully, to alleviate already prevalent confusion, Audi bestows names on some of them that are not a variant of “E-Tron”

Following that ramping up of electric car production will be a phase-down of internal combustion models. Audi plans to launch its final internal combustion model in 2026. All vehicles launched after 2026 will be electric models. Audi says it will be all but finished producing combustion models by 2033 — limited production for the Chinese market may continue beyond that.

Audi going electric should not be too surprising. Volkswagen Group is making a major EV push up and down its lineup with multiple new EV-specific platforms and everything from mass-market crossovers like the VW ID.4 to performance cars like the Porsche Taycan. And Audi doesn’t have a tent-pole vehicle like the 911 that would keep it from going completely electric.

Luxury automakers like Audi have the easiest route to going electric. Their customers are already used to paying a premium. It’s no coincidence that many of Audi’s direct rivals like Volvo, Lincoln and Cadillac have set aggressive EV conversion timelines while Toyota and Honda, who need EV costs to come down and charging infrastructure to improve, have made far more modest pledges.

You need to know where to look to spot The Invisible House

Normally, when people build their houses, they want it to draw attention. Especially those who live in huge mansions or designer homes. The goal is to get people to notice and admire their architecture and more. If you are Tomas Osink, then it’s the complete opposite. Aptly named The Invisible House, this residence does a great job of staying inconspicuous through clever means.

First of all, what contributes to its fascinating claim is the location. Sitting in a remote private 90-acre property a few minutes away from Joshua Tree’s downtown area, nobody knows it’s there unless they’re told beforehand. Next, is how The Invisible House is designed.

What allows the structure to blend with its surroundings are the tempered glass walls. The exterior surfaces sport a mirror finish, which creates the illusions that there is nothing there. Observers would really need to know what to look for so they can make out the home’s silhouette against a rocky backdrop.

Up close, it somewhat looks like a skyscraper that sits horizontally. Meanwhile, the uneven terrain reveals that The Invisible House sits on robust concrete pillars. This somehow makes it seem that it also floats above the ground. Inside, the high ceiling coupled with the large glass panels delivers a panoramic view of the landscape.

If you’re up for a dip, you have access to a large indoor swimming pool. There are four bedrooms and bathrooms accessible via sliding partitions. With Barely any walls dividing the various spaces within, those staying at The Invisible House are in for a surreal experience.

This Chef-Approved Tool to Cook Steak Just Got Better

Every seasoned chef swears by cook temperature and not cook time. Your medium-rare steak will be ready when its internal temperature is 130°F, no matter how long it takes to get there. ThermoWorks is in the business of monitoring and regulating heat for cooks. Chefs swear by the brand’s Thermapen Mk4 instant-read cooking thermometer, and those same chefs better get ready to swear by the newer, better version: the Thermapen One.

The Thermapen One is the fastest instant-read thermometer on the market. While the ever-popular Mk4 could get a reading in two to three seconds, the Thermapen One gets a reading in one second, an unprecedented feat that puts the “instant-read” in “instant-read thermometers.” And if you’re wondering what the hell those couple seconds do, just imagine how many fewer arm hairs you’ll scorch by not having to wait for a temperature reading.

Five years of R&D didn’t only go into make the Thermapen One a faster cooking thermometer. It’s accurate within 0.5° F, features a brighter backlight display and utilizes a new easy-to-access battery compartment, which also houses the settings.

      thermometer

      ThermoWorks

The new thermometer also maintains a lot of what made the Mk4 great: an auto-rotating display, motion-sensing sleep and wake mode and an IP67 waterproof rating. Because ThermoWorks believes so much in its new thermometer, it’s offering a five-year warranty on the Thermapen One.

The Thermapen One is available now for $105, available in a breadth of colors. To phase out the Mk4, ThermoWorks is offering a closeout deal on the older model by marking down its $99 retail price to $69 — a fond farewell to ring in its champion.

The Best New Fitness Gear to Start Summer With

Welcome to Summer 2021; it’s only just begun, and yet the world of sports and fitness is full of interesting news. For one, Rudy Winkler set a national record for the hammer throw and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics when he chucked one 82.71 meters (a little over 271 feet).

Meanwhile, cybersecurity experts say that Peloton bikes in public spaces like gyms and hotels are vulnerable to hackers controlling their microphones and cameras. On a more positive note, studies show you can get through the pain of training in the summer heat simply by reframing how you think about it.

And, of course, there’s lots of new fitness gear to kick off the season with too.
