What to Consider

A lesson on TV tech geek-speak is a good place to start before you shop, as there’s a mound of jargon to wade through, and a thorough understanding will help inform your buying decision. 4K, also known as ultra-high-definition (UHD), has four times the pixels of, say, an older HD 1080p TV. 8K TVs have four times the pixels of 4K, but they’re extremely pricey, plus there isn’t a ton of content out there for them. Most 4K TVs have HDR — or high dynamic range — which translates to superior contrast.

You’ll also see OLED (organic light-emitting diode) and QLED (quantum dot LED) TVs on the market. Without getting too far into the weeds, the latter is essentially a souped-up LED TV, and the former skips the LED backlight in favor of light emitted from millions of individual pixels, which is a newer technology.

Some brands support OLED and others QLED, and there are pros and cons to each depending on your TV viewing preferences (are you a gamer or a cinephile?) when it comes to contrast, color, viewing angles and brightness.

Sorry, But You Can’t Have Tudor’s Coolest New Watch

Every two years, the world’s dedicated watch nerds hold their collective breath in anticipation of a bunch of special, one-off watches that they can’t buy. Only Watch, a special auction whose proceeds fund research into muscular dystrophy, brings together some of the biggest players in the horological landscape in service of the greater good. Each company makes a special piece unique to be auctioned off at the Only Watch event, and the resulting watches are invariably some of the coolest pieces of the year.

Many of these watches are merely special variations of existing models, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t dope as hell. Take Tudor’s Black Bay GMT One, for example: it’s the same BB GMT that we all know and love, but done up in…well, I don’t know what. Tudor says it’s a “secret stainless steel aging technique.” It sort of looks like a BB GMT that was dug up under a ziggurat in the year 3200 by some alien archaeologist. Whatever it is, it’s cool.

The bracelet was treated to match, and even the movement was treated: “the bridges and mainplate were coated in black before being aged by barrel tumbling.” It’s also a Master Chronometer, meaning it’s anti-magnetic to 15,000 gauss and accurate to within, in this case, +/- 5 seconds per day.

What’s Next for the Ford Bronco? Here’s What We Know

After many, many years of decline and neglect, as the third decade of the 21st Century spawned, Ford revived the Bronco lineage as a new sub-brand. We’ve sampled the Bronco Sport crossover — which is great. We just drove the big boy Bronco SUV, which is outstanding. But those strong debuts beg the question: what comes next for the Bronco brand?

The Ford Motor Company seldom comments on future products (unless the CEO decides to chime in on Twitter), and it can be difficult to project too far forward in an automotive future that could include Level 4 autonomous driving, EVs powered by solid-state batteries and actual flying cars by the end of this decade. But with reason and previous reporting, we can offer some conjecture on how the Bronco brand will move forward in three main areas: fuel economy, performance and body styles.

The Ford Bronco should go electric soon

Pretty much every reviewer has loved driving the 2021 Bronco…but we all drove it with the backdrop of climate change-fueled record heat waves engulfing much of the country. And Ford did not put its green foot forward with its new SUV; you can get 21 mpg combined with a Ford Bronco, with a 2.3-liter and no off-road mods , but start dabbling with the Badlands trim and Sasquatch packages, and you’re looking at a dip to 17 or 18 mpg combined. The Bronco is less efficient than the Jeep Wrangler, and only slightly better than the Toyota 4Runner, which went into production in 2009.

Expect Ford to rectify Bronco fuel economy soon with a hybrid powertrain. Ford CEOs have referenced building a hybrid Bronco. Bronco leaks have shown both an EV coaching mode in the Bronco OS and a section about treating hybrid batteries in the Bronco owner’s manual. A hybrid is a competitive necessity, with Jeep already having a 4xe PHEV at dealerships and Toyota committed to building a hybrid 4Runner. Ford doesn’t have major technical hurdles to take the Bronco hybrid; those components are already present in other vehicles. Indeed, some form of hybrid Bronco could arrive as soon as next year.

An electric Bronco will likely happen as well, but it will take a bit longer. Ford has said it will create a dedicated EV platform that can support off-road SUVs, with the announcement all but confirming it will be used for a Bronco. And Ford CEO Jim Farley all but confirmed a Bronco EV was coming on Twitter. But a dedicated EV platform will take years to develop, and, as of right now, there isn’t much incentive to rush one to market. Toyota has lagged behind on EV development; meanwhile, Jeep’s Magneto concept — literally a two-door Rubicon stuffed with batteries instead of a gas engine — showed how far off an EV Wrangler is from production.

Expect a Ford Bronco Raptor to arrive soon…ish

Jeep knew the Ford Bronco was coming and planned accordingly — and deviously. In the interim since Ford debuted the Bronco, Jeep has dropped both the Hemi V8-powered Wrangler Rubicon 392 and the plug-in hybrid 4xe. Both have more power and torque than any Bronco, and both arrived in dealerships before the Bronco.

Jeep also announced the Xtreme Recon package for the Wrangler, which nudges it just above every Bronco “best-in-class” spec. Seriously: the Bronco can ford 33.5 inches of water; Xtreme Recon brings the Wrangler rating up to 33.6 inches. You never know when that extra 0.1 inch of water-fording capability will prove critical, right?

Ford, presumably, should produce a Bronco-branded retort. Ford itself released a testing photo from last September showing an airborne Bronco with more articulation than the current spec; that vehicle will likely be called the Bronco Raptor, rather than the Warthog as originally planned (and as Halo fans hoped). And with the Bronco’s history of winning the Baja 1000, a desert-racer version could not be a more natural fit. A Ford engineer fleshing out his LinkedIn profile with his projects noted that the Bronco Raptor would arrive for 2023.

Rumors have focused on Ford’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 for the Bronco powertrain. This engine puts out 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque in the Explorer ST and 494 hp and 630 lb-ft in the hybrid Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring. Judging from Ford’s F-150 Raptor and the Ranger Raptor sold abroad, some high-performance racing shocks are a good bet for the Bronco Raptor as well.

Expect More Bronco Vehicles

Ford has explicitly marked the Bronco as a family of vehicles. That naturally implies that, with the success of the Bronco and Bronco Sport, Ford is not finished adding more Bronco-branded vehicles. The natural route to go is a Bronco-branded adventure pickup to go after the Jeep Gladiator. The first-gen Bronco had a pickup variant. Bronco capability plus the added utility of a truck bed should be a no-brainer.

According to Automobile, a Bronco pickup truck is happening in mid-2024 for the 2025 model year (but coming potentially sooner). It will be four-door only with the same powertrain and transmission options as the current Bronco, as well as the same G.O.A.T. modes and the Sasquatch package.

Another option down the road — and this is speculation on our part — could be a Bronco-branded three-row SUV. Jeep has opted not to go for three rows so far with the Wrangler —but they are going all-in on three-row SUVs elsewhere. Land Rover reportedly has a three-row Defender 130 in the works. Toyota, meanwhile, could have a new and more affordable three-row off-roader replacement for the Land Cruiser coming based on the Tundra.

A strong majority — around 75 percent — of Bronco buyers are new to Ford. Winning over buyers is great. But it also means those buyers may be Bronco buyers, not necessarily loyal Ford buyers. Families who outgrow their four-door Bronco aren’t automatically jumping to a three-row Explorer or an Expedition. A three-row Bronco may become necessary to keep buyers from straying.

This Awesome Electric Camper Van Is for Sale…But We Can’t Buy It Yet

Camping is an excellent way to commune with nature. But it comes with a bit of guilt. Whether you’re building out a cool custom camper van or using a super-capable truck or SUV, the vehicle you use to get out there isn’t great for the environment. There aren’t great electric options out there yet. And, even if there were, the charging infrastructure likely isn’t there to support them.

However, as Autoweek recently spotted, London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) — builders of the new London Electric Taxi — are now offering a solution to that conundrum, a camper van version of their VN5 electric van, the VN5 e-camper. They are calling it “the world’s first electric camper van.”

That said, we’d probably term it a range-extending plug-in hybrid, not a true electric car. It offers a pure EV range of 60 miles, with the range extender delivering up to 304 miles of total range. Consider it the green camper van of your dreams…if your dreams involve a van that looks a lot like a London taxi.

The van itself will remind you of a classic VW camper van. Features include sleeping room for four with the bench seat folding into another bed, a pop-top roof for extra standing height, a folding table and a kitchenette that can run on electric power. LEVC will offer a range of colors and a selection of racks to suit your outdoor gear of choice.

Pricing for the VN5 e-camper will start at £62,250, which is a hair under $86,000 at the present exchange rate. Deliveries — for the U.K. and Europe only — will begin in Q4 2021.

While LEVC probably won’t bring the VN5 e-camper to America, don’t get too bummed. We suspect some enterprising company will have a fleet of these available for Americans to travel across the Pond and rent soon enough. (Although unless you’re traveling by sailboat, the plane flight probably negates the emissions benefits of using a quasi-electric camper).

10 Tips for Safely Operating Your Air Fryer

Air fryers have seen a surge in popularity over the years, whether or not they’re actually any better than a standard convection oven. But with great popularity comes great responsibility, as the saying more or less goes. A four-year-old girl in Jacksonville, Florida, recently saved the day after she alerted her father that the family’s air fryer had burst into flames. The fire was contained, but not before inflicting minor burns to the father and obliterating the stove.

Like any common household appliance, air fryers come with their own set of safety hazards and precautions. But with proper use and care, you won’t need to worry about your air fryer spontaneously combusting. Here are 10 tips for operating your air fryer safely.

1. Read the manual

If it beeps, boops and dings, you should always the read the manual first. Air fryers are cooking devices that can get dangerously hot, so it’s common sense to read about all the precautions you should take when using it. Manufacturers include the manual for a reason: They don’t need you to get hurt with their product.

2. Don’t overcrowd the food basket

We get that you’re hungry and you want to cook as much food as possible, but you need to leave space between your food and the heating component in the air fryer — otherwise, you risk starting a fire.

3. Unplug the air fryer immediately after use

Once you’re done cooking, unplug your air fryer — it’s the safest way to make sure all the heating components stay off and don’t accidentally start up when you don’t want it to.

4. Ease up on the oil

The whole shtick of air fryers is that you need little to no oil for crispy food. Some recipes will tell you to include a minuscule amount of oil to cook, and be sure to use just as much as directed, as adding too much oil could result in a fire.

5. Don’t put anything on top of the air fryer

Air fryers’ external parts can get hot, and putting anything on top of the unit could cause overheating.

6. Give the air fryer enough clearance

Air fryers have air vents to release heat. The air vents need ample space to release the heat, and if you put too close to a surface, say your wall, you risk a fire hazard. Allow up to five inches of clearance around your air fryer to give enough airflow.

7. Put your air fryer on an even, stable surface

You don’t need your air fryer to topple over when it’s in use, so just make sure it’s not on any wobbly surface, and do make sure it’s level so it doesn’t slip and slide.

8. Never leave an in-use air fryer unattended

Food can burn before you know it, and if you’re not within in the vicinity of your air fryer, it could spell disaster not just for your food, but for your well-being.

9. Regularly clean your air fryer

Grease and food debris can easily and quickly accumulate. Make sure to keep your air fryer clean so nothing catches on fire Most parts of your air fryer are dishwasher safe (read the manual to make sure), and other non-washable parts should be spot cleaned.

10. Don’t immediately clean your air fryer after use

Your air fryer can get as hot as an oven, so cleaning it right after you used it is a big no no. Give your air fryer at least 30 minutes to cool down before you clean it so you don’t burn yourself on any hot surfaces.

Caviar’s Grand Apple iPad Pro boasts over 2.2 lbs of pure gold, wood, and diamonds

It seems like we’re bracing for more major releases from Apple in the coming months. Of course, headlining its 2021 hardware refresh will be its new smartphone. Rumors, on the other hand, suggest there are not enough groundbreaking upgrades to warrant it being called the iPhone 13. Instead, it might be called the iPhone 12S. While waiting, Caviar teases the Grand Apple tablet.

When you want to finer things in life, the Russian jeweler gladly offers its services. In fact, its forte is giving popular items a ludicrous makeover. So far, we’ve seen the brand work its magic on sneakers, smartphones, game consoles, earbuds, timepieces, and even automobiles.

The Grand Apple sees the latest iPad Pro receive the luxury treatment. Caviar loves to work with gold and gemstones. If you want a slate with a lavish layer of opulence, this is exactly what the doctor ordered. Now you can show off your device just like how one would with their accessories.

Caviar replaces the housing with a combination of pure gold and rare wood. This intricate masterpiece also uses pure gold for the apple tree and the hill it stands on. The wood panel becomes the backdrop as you spot 9 apples – each encrusted with 9 diamonds for a total of 81.

There are engravings of two quotes in the bottom section. The first reads: “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” What follows says: “May your joy be on your journey, and not in some distant goal.” These excerpts are from Steve Jobs and Tim Cook respectively.

The black section of the frame features the text Caviar Luxury Standard and other branding elements. The serial number is visible here as well. Caviar says that the total weight of gold on the Grand Apple is more than 2.2 lbs.
