This Timepiece Is Inspired by a 1984 Land Rover

The 1984 Land Rover Defender is one of the most iconic off-roaders of all time, and now there is a watch inspired by its instantly recognizable styling. REC Watches, the brand behind this unique timepiece, salvages excess metal from notable vehicles around the world and uses it to create tribute watches. With its latest timepiece, REC has joined forces with Arkonik (the purveyor of custom Land Rover Defenders) to capture the soul of this iconic British vehicle. The RNR Arkonik features a dial handcrafted from material sourced from the 1984 Arkonik Land Rover Defender 110. The powerful design with striking blue details, combined with a Swiss-made SELLITA SW290-1 movement, make this watch stand out from the rest. This signature timepiece is limited to just 302 examples and embodies British ingenuity and innovation. It’s a custom creation you don’t want to miss out on.

The Complete Panerai Buying Guide: Every Current Model Line Explained

Welcome to Brand Breakdown, a series of comprehensive yet easy-to-digest guides to your favorite companies, with insights and information you won’t find on the average About page.

Giovani Panerai opened his first watch shop in Florence, Italy in 1860, and his operation soon expanded to include a bustling workshop and Florence’s first horological training center. By the early 20th Century, Panerai had taken on contracts for the Royal Italian Navy, and in 1916 Panerai secured a crucial patent for Radiomir, a radium-based glowing paint.

Like so many firms stuck in fascist countries, Panerai developed watches for the wrong side during WWII, but Mussolini’s dictatorial mandates and deep pockets spurred Panerai to innovate at a rapid pace. They developed the Perspex crystal (1936), massive luminous sandwich dials (1938), integrated lugs with spring bars (1940) and a movement with an 8-day power reserve to reduce wear on crown seals (also 1940). After the fascists fell, Panerai developed their renowned tritium-based lume called Luminor (1949), and their signature lever-activated crown lock (1950).

Panerai

Panerai’s wrist watches didn’t reach a wider audience until they offered a civilian collection in 1993 and attracted the endorsement of Sylvester Stallone. By 1997, Panerai had become so successful that the Vendome Group (later the Richemont Group) acquired the firm, moved production to Switzerland, and transformed Panerai into the luxury sport watch company we know today.

It took Panerai some time to shed Sly’s Rocky/Rambo bravado and tell its own story more directly, but once it did, the company offered up a subtler form of badassery that’s all about oceangoing adventure. Italy is almost entirely coastline, and their Navy is famous for innovative maritime technologies and techniques. Panerai was right there making the dive watches, gauges, and compasses for these pioneers of the deep. Meanwhile, the company has maintained a close relationship with yacht racing, including on vintage wooden yachts.

Despite the relocation of its manufacturing to Switzerland, Panerai’s style remains faithful to the original Italian designs of the early to mid-20th Century, and today’s collection is far more diverse than ever before.

Panerai

    A Vast and Diverse Catalog
Broken into four collections, Panerai offers over 20 in-house movements as well a slew of movements built on third party bases, and these calibers are found in well over 200 individual watch models available in steel, bronze, titanium, gold, platinum, and proprietary case materials such as BMG-TECH (bulk metallic glass), Carbotech (polyether ether ketone), and Panerai Composite (synthetic ceramic using micro arc oxidation).

Sometimes the distinction between models is merely a matter of case material or dial color, but it’s common to grow frustrated shopping for a Panerai because one’s preferred look and fit don’t always come equipped with the movement/functions one prefers—or vice-versa. We aim to make navigating this dense catalog as easy as possible.

    Panerai Numbers
Each watch is assigned an individual reference or PAM number: PAMxxxxx. Colloquially, the reference numbers are often referred to without the zeros between the PAM and the numbers at the end.

Panerai’s in-house movements carry calibre numbers in this format: P.xxxx.
The company’s movements built on a Unitas/ETA base have Roman numeral calibre numbers that start with OP (e.g., OPXXII).

    Panerai’s Four Model Categories

The best way to divide and conquer the vast Panerai catalog is to start with the collection you’re interested in followed by the case size that’ll fit you best (keeping in mind that Panerais are meant to wear boldly). Using a filter on the brand’s site, you’ll see that while there are 150 models in the Luminor family, so if you know that 42mm is the size for you it handily narrows it down to just 6 (at time of writing). Then, you’ve just got some dial colors and complications to consider.

However, much of the variety in Panerai comes from its movements and complications. The quintessential Panerai experience is quite possibly a Luminor at 44mm, but there are over 100 models that fit that description so, in addition to narrowing down your choices by case material, you’ll also have a slew of features available. For the most basic and entry-level options, check out the range called Base Logo.

    Panerai Luminor

Beginning in the late 1940s, Panerai moved away from Radiomir lume to the tritium-based mixture patented as Luminor. In 1950 Panerai introduced its signature crown lock. The Luminor line features this crown lock, integrated lugs, and a cushion case shape that has its roots in the past but was also modernized a bit for 1993’s first civilian collection. This is easily the most recognizable Panerai look today.

    panerai.com

    $5,000.00

This is he classic Panerai look for the least money possible, and it even comes with an in-house movement. The Base Logo is the brand’s most basic, with several options in the Luminor and Radiomir collections. You get two-hand time telling via a simple manually wound movement — and a painted dial rather than the brand’s signature “sandwich dial.” Newer models have in-house movements but older ones were sourced.

    Panerai Luminor Marina PAM02392

    panerai.com

    $7,900.00

The headline here is 42mm. A lot of people find the bulk of the Panerai catalog at 44mm, 45mm and 47mm simply unwieldy despite loving everything else about the watches. So many rejoiced when this new version was introduced in TKTK, offering the complete package — only in a smaller and more wearable one. Note that it’s water-resistant to 100m, rather than a traditional dive watch’s 300m, but more than sufficient for most needs.

    Panerai Luminor Power Reserve PAM00423

    panerai.com

    $10,200.00

The PAM 432 is a good representative of the brand’s big-boy 47mm watches, as well as an example of complications. Here we have a power reserve indicator, as you’ll find on many other models, particularly useful since the movement here is manually wound. Other complications you’ll find are the likes of GMTs and flyback chronographs, often in combination.

    Movement: Panerai P.3002 manual

    Panerai

    Panerai Luminor Marina Carbotech PAM01118

    panerai.com

    $16,400.00

Panerai is strong on style, but the brand shows it horological substance with forward-looking and experimental watches using avant-garde materials, high-end complications and finishing as well as exotic techniques. Here, the brand combined its proprietary carbon composite material Carbotech with lume embedded in the case at unexpected and unconventional places.

    Diameter: 44mm
    Movement: Panerai P.9010 automatic

    Panerai Luminor Due

Though generally smaller, thinner, and feeling a bit “fancier,” the Due (“two” in Italian) feels like a sub-collection of the Luminor line and features the familiar design and crown guard locking mechanism. It’s understandable that the brand wanted to separate it from the famously rugged Luminor with its dive watch origins, though, as the Due has only a dress-watch-level of water resistance at 30m and a slimmer profile. The Due line premiered in 2018 and is Panerai’s answer to demands for both smaller and more feminine models.

    SHOP PRE-OWNED

    Panerai

    Panerai Luminor Due PAM00927

    panerai.com

    $7,400.00

Offering a similar look and size to 42mm Luminor models, it might at first be hard to tell what makes this a Due. It’s got less water resistance and a thinner case, and this particular model offering features like brushed titanium and an automatic movement with 3 days of power reserve — and an overall elegant execution based on vintage models.

    Panerai

    Panerai Piccolo Due PAM01029

    panerai.com

    $15,700.00

These petite Panerais at only 38mm in the Luminor Due collection are called Piccolo Due. The smallest Panerai you’re going to find, it still has the captivating look (minus the presence) and shows that the brand’s charisma doesn’t rely on its size. This one is fancied up in the brand’s Goldtech gold alloy, but there are more affordable versions in steel as well.

    Diameter: 38mm
    Movement: Panerai P.900 automatic

    Panerai Radiomir

Referencing Panerai’s earliest military watches from the 1930s, Radiomir models stand out from the rest of collections for a couple of reasons. First, they lack the prominent crown guard and locking mechanism that nearly defines the brand and is a feature of every other collection. They also have a couple of case styles with either wire lugs that detach for strap changes or the Radiomir 1940 models with integrated lugs and spring bars. Radiomir watches might look relatively classical and retr0-feeling — but remember that many are sized to offer a very prominent presence, mostly at 45mm or 47mm diameters.

    Panerai Radiomir Base Logo PAM00753

    panerai.com

    $4,500.00

Like the Luminor Base Logo above, this is the most basic and affordable Radiomir model — as well as the brand’s overall entry point. No “sandwich dial” or automatic winding, but you do get an in-house movement, 100m of water resistance and a bold wrist statement at 45mm.

    Panerai Radiomir California PAM00931

    panerai.com

    $8,700.00

No logo or dial text, just a whopping 47mm steel case and a California dial. The brand plays around with dial designs a bit in its Radiomir collection, and Panerai is one of the watchmakers known for California dials (half Roman, half Arabic numerals). This particular model features wire lugs, onion crown and a gradient effect for its light brown dial. Inside, it runs on a manually wound in-house movement offering only hours and minutes but nicely decorated and visible through a display caseback.

    Panerai

Panerai Radiomir 1940 Tourbillon GMT Oro Rosso PAM00558

    panerai.com

    $123,300.00

This is an example of the Radiomir 1940 case with its integrated lugs — as well as showcasing the brand’s take on classical, high-end horology. Although it’s got a relatively traditional look, a couple stand out features aren’t readily apparent: First is that its caseback reveals a tourbillon and a power reserve indicator, while its straightforward dial displays GMT and day/night functions. Finally, it’s in a massive 48mm case in the brand’s Goldtech alloy.

    Diameter: 48mm
Movement: Panerai P.2005 manual, tourbillon, GMT, power-reserve, am/pm, 6-day power reserve

    Panerai Submersible

In 2019, Panerai separated out its dedicated dive watches into this new category, and doing so vastly simplified its catalog. While other Panerai watches might technically deserve to be called dive watches due to their origins and water resistance, these have features like rotating bezels we tend to associate with modern divers. It also differs from other collections due to elements like its dial design and skeletonized hands.

    SHOP PRE-OWNED

    Panerai

    Panerai Submersible PAM00973

    panerai.com

    $8,900.00

Like other collections, many of Panerai’s Submersible dive watches are imposing in size, so when the brand introduced a new version at 42mm a lot of people were pleased. It’s sized right, is water-resistant to 300m and features an excellent automatic movement with 3 days of power reserve. It’s priced to compete for your Submariner money, but incontrovertibly offers a stronger and more distinctive personality.

    Panerai

Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Bronzo PAM00382

    panerai.com

    $10,200.00

Another feature Panerai is known for is its early use of bronze — and the seductive way it names watches made from it: Bronzo. Looking like it came from a sunken wreck and and is ready to go back to explore it, this massive 47mm dive watch will only look better and more rugged as its bronze case patinas. It also features one of the brand’s most compelling movements offering a 3-day power reserve and automatic winding.

What Is an SD Card, and Which Ones to Buy

If you own a digital camera — be it a compact, mirrorless or DSLR camera — you need to pair it with an SD in order for it to save your photos and videos. Most digital cameras actually don’t come with an SD card so it’s kind of up to you, the photographer, to buy one that fits your digital camera and your shooting needs.

When searching for an SD card for your digital camera, there are a lot of different options out there and it can get complicated fast. Here are the basics you need to know.

What is an SD card?

An SD (Secure Digital) card is a small removable memory card that can be inserted in a number of different consumer electronics — including digital cameras, printers, laptops, smartphones and video game consoles (like the Nintendo Switch) — to save, store and transfer data. A lot of smartphones have transitioned to using Micro SD cards, which is a smaller (in size and capacity) version of an SD card.

The cards: SD, SDHC or SDCX?

There are a few different types of SD cards —SD, SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) and SDXC (Secure Digital Xtra Capacity) — but they all effectively do the same job: add storage to your digital camera. SD cards are older and generally have lower capacities and slower transfer speeds. SDHC and SDXC cards are newer (and better) types of SD cards that have higher storage capacities and faster transfer speeds. And yes, they’re more expensive.

It’s important to check which type of memory card your digital camera is compatible before buying one. Most new digital cameras should support three types of SD cards. If the digital camera is more than 10 years old, there’s a decent chance it won’t support support SDHC cards and SDXC cards because they weren’t around, but that’s a problem that should be pretty uncommon.

Why is speed important?

The speed of the SD card refers to two different speeds: there’s the “write speed” and the “read speed.” The write speed is how quickly the SD card is able to record all the information while you’re taking photo or video with your camera, while the read speed is how fast you can transfer data off of the SD card. The write speed and the read speed are typically the same on most SD cards.

The speed of an SD card is important as a quality-of-life feature, but it’s crucial for people shooting with higher-end digital cameras. Higher-resolution photos and videos require an SD card to be fast so that it can record all the data as fast as possible. Most SD cards with a high-capacities generally also tend to have high speeds, so you don’t have to worry as much about a high capacity card with a low speed.

If you don’t see the speed of the SD card advertised, the other thing you want to look out for is its class rating. The SD Association (the governing body of SD cards) created a class system to help standardize SD card speed ratings, and each SD card is given a class rating. The higher the class rating, the faster the write speeds of the SD card

Here are the various classes and their minimum write speeds: Class 2 (2MB/s), Class 4 (4MB/s), Class 6 (6MB/s) or Class 10 (up to 10MB/s).

    Why is capacity important?

SD card capacities are typically measured in gigabytes (GB) and range from just a handful of gigs up to 512GB. When deciding what SD card capacity you should get, you need to have a knowledge of what size photos or videos you’re taking.

If you have a fairly modern mirrorless or DSLR camera, uncompressed RAW photos will take up in the neighborhood of 7 megabytes (MB) apiece. With this knowledge, you can fit about 325 photos on an SD card with a capacity of 16GB, or 650 photos on a 32GB card.

Videos take up more space than photos and complicate things in an additional direction; in addition to resolution and bitrate, you also need to factor in things like video length and aspect ratio. If you’re shooting a 4K video at 60fps (which is pretty standard these days for action cameras, compact shooters and even smartphones), a 16GB card can store about ten 4K 60fps videos.

    Some buying advice

    • If you can, buy the most advanced card that your camera is capable of accepting.

    • Buy from a well-known SD card maker, such as SanDisk or Lexar.

    • Before buying an SD card, check to see if there are higher-capacity models available — you might be able to get better deal on one.

All that said, here are some great picks.

Set the Night on Fire: Living, Dying, and Playing Guitar With the Doors

Perhaps the most low-key of the 60s-era guitar gods, The Doors’ axeman Robbie Krieger’s understated approach has always added another layer of mystery to the bands’ mystique. That all ends here, with his debut memoir. He packs Set the Night on Fire full of never-before-told stories from The Doors’ most vital years, offering s a fresh perspective on the most infamous moments of the band’s career. Arrange it thoughtfully and outfit it appropriately, and your home gym can be an entirely capable alternative to a pricey gym membership. It doesn’t have to call for heavy, bulky (not to mention expensive) equipment, or newfangled contraptions built into mirrors or walls either. TRX’s Home2 System suspension trainer has exactly this type of functional minimalism in mind — a Navy SEAL squadron commander named Randy Hetrick invented it as a way to stay fit during deployment.

Hetrick made his original version using a jiu-jitsu belt and parachute webbing, but the design has since been refined. The system sets up virtually anywhere, and one size is suitable for upper body, lower body and core workouts. It comes with a mesh bag for storage and travel and includes workout primers developed by professional trainers.

Despite its basic design, the TRX system adapts to various workouts and targeted exercises, just like a pricey as-seen-on-TV apparatus. But unlike that hulking machine, it can be bought in fewer than 12 installments, especially now that it’s 15 percent off with code AFFILTRX15 at TRX’s website.

Plus, if you want more than just a TRX system, the brand just released its own dumbells today — the code will work for those, and everything else on the site, too.

10 Great Travel Backpacks for Your Next Trip

style

Courtesy

Whether you’re globetrotting or planning a weekend getaway, the right bag can make all the difference. And while there are a lot of bags that claim universality, sometimes a bag with a singular focus proves more functional — a la a travel backpack.

Backpacks, as versatile as they are consistent, work well as the primary pack for short weekend trips or as an auxiliary load for longer flights. (They usually abide by airlines’ strict “personal item” size restrictions.) The options on our list vary from small, gadget- and laptop-friendly bags (with trolley slots) to bigger, cargo-centric styles with several compartments for all of your essentials and strapping designed to balance the bag’s weight.

Within all of these, compartments aplenty ease the travel experience. Some have slots for passports and phones; others have loops for keys or zippered pouches for foreign currency; all of them have isolated laptop compartments, and a few have trolley sleeves for sliding the bag over your suitcase’s handle. However, I’m not trying to one-size-fits-all the travel experience. Just as no trips are the same — and no two people prefer the identical itineraries in the same cities — bags are not either, and what works for one may not work for another. (“Who brings their laptop on vacation?” someone might wonder.) And although you may feel tempted to buy a backpack so bold, so brazen that it’ll be unmistakably yours, don’t — get something subtle, loaded with features and sans overt, ugly logos.

Best Overall Travel Backpack

Tranzpack CNNCT Coated-Canvas Backpack

Once the supplier of bags for the US Army, Eastpak has since — evident by this bag — expanded into civilian gear. Their Tranzpack is made from coated-canvas, features padded shoulder straps and a book-like zipper design that lets the wearer pack it like a suitcase.

Best Upgrade Travel Backpack

Generation Slipstream Backpack

Troubadour

Troubadour turned the mundane middle school essential into a bonafide luxury bag. This option’s cut from lightweight and water-resistant Italian vegetable-tanned leather, and finished with gun metal zipper and even more leather accents. A trolley sleeve lets you secure the bag over a bigger suitcase’s telescopic handle and a separate laptop compartment and general storage area keeps everything organized and protected.

Best Affordable Travel Backpack

27L Pack

Although outdoor leaning, Roark’s 27L pack features travel-friendly features like an invisible passport sleeve, a mesh accessories pocket, a sunglasses pouch, padded laptop storage and an accessible rolltop closure.

Router Transit Backpack

The North Face

The Transit model is The North Face’s biggest backpack. Clocking in at 41L, there’s room for a laptop, tablet and several more gadgets, plus the rest of the stuff you’d usually pack: a change of clothes, a book, headphones and a water bottle. Plus, a few of the pockets are fleece-lined for added protection.

The Backpack

Away doesn’t just make suitcases. They know the easiest way around an airport is a wheeled suitcase in one hand with a backpack draped down its handle. As such, they’ve constructed the latter from water-resistant nylon outfitted with pockets for a laptop, tickets and a passporta large center compartment for clothes and other bulky items and an expandable side pocket for a water bottle or umbrella. Best of all, it comes in four colors that match well with the Away suitcase you already own.

Cordura Ripstop Backback

This bag’s cordura ripstop construction renders it durable and weather resistant. Plus, it’s comfortable, too. Padded shoulder straps lessen the load; pockets divvy up the weight; pouches organize your essentials; a buckled front strap secures it across your chest.

Webbing-Trimmed Econyl Backpack

Indispensable

Japan brand Indispensable makes an array of bags that are, well, as the name suggests, indispensable. (Sorry.) This one’s cut from Econyl, a material derived from marine and landfill waste. It’s water- and scuff-resistant and features pockets all over.

Journeyman Leather-Trimmed Canvas Twill Backpack

This bag showcases Filson’s range. Unlike the one that appeared earlier on this list, most of the storage compartments are internalized, offering security and a clean, sleek aesthetic. It’s constructed from the brand’s oil-finished Tin Cloth and lined with soft canvas. There’s a separated laptop sleeve, several more pockets, and a few pouches for smaller personal items.

Tech Backpack

Herschel’s Tech Backpack emphasizes storage solutions for the gear-savvy. Hidden and overt pockets aplenty make room for a laptop, tablet, earbuds, headphones, chargers, cameras, phones, and, for the international traveler, a passport.

Leather Backpack

Anson Calder

The grail. The I-just-spent-a-flight-ticket-on-this-bag pick. Anson Calder’s sleek, rectangular backpack cut from French calfskin allows for customization, courtesy of the brand’s in-house cases, sleeves and pouches, which can be attached to internal or external loops. Plus, there’s a padded rear laptop sleeve inside to separate your most valuable cargo.

This New Watch from Montana Is a Throwback to Old-School Watchmaking

Cast your gaze onto the southwest corner of the map of Montana, and you’ll find the city of Bozeman. Make your way there and sully forth down to Main Street, and you’ll discover a watch shop called The Last Wind Up, run by 30-year veteran watchmaker Dave Berghold. After decades of watch repair and selling new and vintage watches, he’s quietly put his experience into creating a timepiece of his own. It’s called the Model 1, as reported by our friends at Worn & Wound — and the result of Berghold’s labors is a handsome, classically designed watch that we can’t help but be charmed by.

There are more and more crowdfunded watch brands bursting onto your Instagram feed everyday, and many of them are even based in the United States and have a local angle. What makes Dave Berghold’s project stand out, however, is that it simply feels like the watch your local watchmaker made — the way we imagine more watches were created at one time in the past.

Berghold’s approach is similar to that of many startups, as his parts are sourced from European suppliers: German case, French hands, Swiss movement, but assembled by him. Also like with other watches, however, it’s the story and creator’s vision (and the quality of those components, of course) that gives it its character. With his “DB” monogram at 12 o’clock and “Bozeman, MT” under the 6 o’clock seconds subdial, the design recalls vintage American pocket watches or pilot’s watches.

Housed in a 38mm case with a prominent onion crown, the Model 1’s pocket watch connection is further strengthened by a hand-wound movement which is on full display through a wide case back window. The lume-filled cathedral hands and Breguet numerals are appropriately classical and a bison strap provides a local touch. Only 50 examples were produced for the initial run, but more are on the way and can be expected for delivery in August 2021 for $1,950 each.

Should You Get a Tube Amp For Your Headphones?

So you’ve made the decision to buy an external headphone amplifier for your desktop setup. Awesome. It’s an easy way to make your nice pair of wired headphones sound better (because your computer’s built-in amp just frankly isn’t very good) — and you want that. Now you just need to decide which one to buy.

There are two main types of headphone amplifiers out there. A solid-state amplifier amplifies the electrical signal using transistor circuits, while a vacuum tube amplifier does the same thing with vacuum tubes. The do effectively the same job, just in different ways. The thing is that there are more solid-state headphone amplifiers in the sub-$200 range because they have less moving parts and are cheaper to make.

Tube amps just sound different

A vacuum tube amp can definitely be considered the “elevated option.” They’re more expensive because they’re more complicated to make, but you find still models that are relatively affordable vacuum tube amplifiers, like Schiit Audio’s Vali ($149) or Vahalla ($349) . That said, a vacuum tube amplifier isn’t definitely make your headphones sound better than if you had a solid-state amplifier — it’s just a different sound.

“Some people (including me) think there is something ‘better’ about the sound of tube amplification,” said Jason Stoddard, cofounder of Schiit Audio, a California-based audio company that sells both kinds of amplifiers. “We don’t really talk about perceived sound, but many audiophiles have commented on tube sound being somewhat more ‘liquid’ or ‘natural’ through the midrange. This is what I perceive as well, though this is not measurable in terms of frequency response.”

The other thing with vacuum tube amplifiers is that you can swap out and try them with different tubes, which changes how they sound. It’s an allure for tinkers (which audiophiles inherently are), in much the same way how people try out different preamps, photo cartridges, styluses (and more) with their turntable setups to customize the sound.

The design is undeniably cool

So the sound quality is admittedly subjective. The design of the two kinds of amplifiers is also subjective. If you ask me (and I think most people), vacuum tube amplifiers have a “wow” factor that solid-state amplifiers can’t compete with. The tubes stick out and glow when you’re listening music. It just looks cool — and admittedly a little intimidating.

Vacuum tube amplifiers aren’t reserved for audiophiles, but if you’re somebody who is thinking about buying one, there are definitely a few words of caution. First, with their exposed glass tubes, they’re definitely more fragile. And two, they require more maintenance; the glass tubes of a vacuum tube amplifier will eventually need to be replaced (Stoddard says after about 5,000 hours of run time).

A vacuum tube amps isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it option. It requires more maintenance, but it also allows for more customization. But are great-yet-different options. “If you really don’t want to deal with things, get solid-state,” Stoddard said. “If you like playing and experimenting a bit, go tubes.”

The Brand-New RadRover 6 Plus Is Rad’s Sexiest E-Bike Yet

There’s a reason the RadRover has stuck around the Rad Power Bikes lineup since the brand’s 2007 inception. North America’s biggest e-bike brand doesn’t take its reliable original fat bike for granted — it just keeps rolling out better and better versions.

The latest edition is no exception. Not only does it boast a number of improvements over its predecessors, but also it’s one of the best-looking bikes Rad has ever released.

As bigger fans, historically, of this brand’s affordability and approachability than its aesthetics, we’re stoked to see progress in this area. So with the RadRover 6 Plus launching today, here are six things that jump out.

Hyper-responsive hydraulic brakes

      radrover 6 plus bike brakes

      Rad Power Bikes

This model is the first Rad to feature hydraulic brakes and ceramic brake pads, which boost stopping power while requiring a lighter touch from the rider. The levers can also be adjusted to accommodate different-sized hands. All of which adds up to less fatigue, a longer lifespan for components and, most importantly, greater safety.

      Sneaky semi-integrated battery

radrover 6 plus bike seat and battery

      Rad Power Bikes

One trait that has always hampered the appearance of Rad bikes is bulky batteries, which can take you far but don’t always looking good doing it. This bike’s removable battery, designed and engineered in-house, marks a notable improvement: it sits in the downtube, protruding a bit but still presenting a cleaner look. The 48V, 14Ah lithium-ion power source delivers 45 miles of range per charge, too.

      User-friendly two-part display

      radrover 6 plus handlebars

      Rad Power Bikes

Rad seriously revamped the dash on this bike, splitting it into two components, one for control and one for information. On the left handlebar sits a control panel with power and light buttons, as well as buttons to raise and lower pedal assistance (there are five levels plus a half-twist throttle) and a display showing battery life and power level in use. Meanwhile, a screen between the bars presents your power output, trip time and miles per hour and more.

      Cooler frame

      radrover 6 plus bike

      Rad Power Bikes

The RadRover 6 Plus comes with two frame options, step-through and diamond, with the latter really catching the eye. Rad says it is re-engineered for better ergonomics, a lower center of gravity and improved handling. We just think it looks like a fierce, fendered mountain bike, and we dig it.

      Stronger motor

      radrover 6 plus motor

      Rad Power Bikes

Rad bikes have long had pretty burly motors. This particular 750-watt one, discreetly housed in the hub, can summit hills up to 25 percent faster than the RadRover 5.

      Better lighting

radrover 6 plus motor bike light

      Rad Power Bikes

We started this list discussing a safety feature, so we’ll finish with one too. Like other Rad bikes, this one boasts a Halo headlight, tail light and integrated brake light, which automatically activate when you turn the bike on. But the RadRover 6 Plus has one notable upgrade: a new fender-mounted tail light that increases rear visibility. That’s not only safety-centric but sweet, as you’ll want to be seen on this bike.

Sleep Under the Stars Inside the Solar-Powered Nomad’s Pad

There’s nothing like sleeping under a starry sky and waking up to the bright morning sunshine. But urban pollution is always a hindrance unless you sleep on a  camping mattress on the roof. Thankfully, there are places that offer respite from the hassle and bustle of city life and provide a safe haven under the stars just like the Nomad’s Pad in the Grand Canyon.

Constructed on a 20-acre lot, this glass pyramid lets you immerse in the beauty of nature during the day and night. It lets you
“become part of the Wild West” where you hear birds chirping in the morning and the coyotes howling at night. Then there’s the whistle of the wind blowing, the aroma of the Pinyon Trees and Juniper Berries, and all that nature has to offer.

Nomad’s Pad is in the concept stage but future guests can choose from one of the ten pyramids planned for the site. Each abode will provide guests unobstructed 360-degree views of their surroundings inside a massive 400-square foot interior. Best of all, each pyramid packs the comfort of home and the convenience of modern technology.

Solar-powered and temperature-controlled glass makes up the pyramid. The clear glass turns opaque at a touch of a button to provide guests privacy. Inside will have air conditioning, luxury linens, a queen-sized bed, and a detached private bathroom and shower. Likewise, guests will have access to complimentary tea and coffee and eco-friendly toiletries.

Meanwhile, outdoor amenities with the Nomad’s Pad include a propane fire pit, a private hot tub, a private patio decked out with lounge furniture, and a hammock. The concept is estimated for an October 2021 opening and guests can reach the site 25 minutes away from the Grand Canyon National Park.

Meet Mexican Streetwear Brand Hermanos Koumori

A collection inspired by a Mexican novelist’s fictional airline; another that asks, “What was running like in ancient times?”; a collaborative hat with New Era that references the fabled “rally cap,” better known as a baseball cap turned inside out, or, for teams that turn to them when down in the final inning, a distress signal and a stab at shifting the game’s momentum.

These varying sources of inspiration act as throughlines for Mexico City-based streetwear brand Hermanos Koumori‘s collections. Whether it’s T-shirts and five panel hats adorned with the Aerolineas Populares logo or pullovers emblazoned with symbolic texts, the label’s founders like to lure buyers in with robust editorial campaigns centered around their chosen theme. On the surface level, they’re a company dedicated to delivering quality apparel and accessories, but for founders Alejandro Sandler and Alex Leon, Koumori means much more.

    hermanos koumori print on shirt

    Hermanos Koumori

“If we just look at it from the outside, Hermanos Koumori is a contemporary streetwear brand based in Mexico City, but for us it is much more than that,” Leon says. “We see it as a studio that has the versatility to move through different areas like art, objects, literature and graphic design to name a few. We are passionate about stories and narratives, that is why for each one of our collections we create a fictional universe that helps us with the inspiration behind them.”

“At the beginning, we used stories in a very literal way to convey our storytelling. We made the merchandise of the institutions and their uniforms, which was really fun because people got really confused not knowing if these institutions/stories really happened or not,” Leon continues. “Today we use them more as a thread that helps us with the creative process, having something to talk about and that the collection as a whole makes sense, being surrounded by artist friends makes us question our actions more and not be so literal.”

man wearing hermanos koumori blazer and pants

    Hermanos Koumori

The pair’s passions range from literature and running to modernist movements — specifically The Neo Prehispanic Movement — and championing the artists they surround themselves with. Far more than mere reference points, these interests become integral to every release, threads to be tied together as the brand grows. However, it’ll remain rooted in their home city, its co-founders explain. And they’re proud to be a brand built on introducing the fruits of their home country — streetwear brands included — to the rest of the world. It helps that their ripstop El Capitán Blazer and matching El Capitán bottoms are, in tandem, one of the most interesting reinterpretations of the suit released this year.

We want to be a brand that represents this city and country.

“Without a doubt, Mexico City is a big influence in the project. Living in this monster of a city is wonderful. Its architecture, music and art nurtures us as persons constantly and obviously the project… The city has too much to offer; they say it’s the city with the most museums in the world. We have great restaurants and also something is always happening: events, art shows, concerts, new openings of restaurants and venues,” Sandler says. “We love it here and feel really inspired by the people here. We feel like it is about time for everyone to realize how great it is here, and day by day we see more and more tourists coming here and really having the time of their lives. We want to be a brand that represents this city and country, so we always try to give a great first impression.”

The 25 Most Essential Gadgets for Men

The Oxford Dictionary says a gadget is “a small mechanical or electronic device or tool” and suggests added deference to those evidently ingenious or novel.

We’re not so sure about the second part. Nothing about the word — etymology or otherwise — suggests a thing must be ingenious or new to be a gadget. A humble suggestion: a gadget is a small mechanical or electronic device or tool that makes your day better. Gadgets grease the tracks of the daily grind. We submit they are useful, not “novel.”

Gadgets are gifts. A gift for yourself, your significant other, your dad or your mail carrier alike. Something to use, not stare at (sorry, whiskey stones, that means you’re out). They’ve got staying power. What fits the bill? From Bluetooth speakers to beard trimmers, here are 25 of the best gadget ideas — what they are, why they rule and which to buy — recommended by Gear Patrol staffers.

    Watch

    Speaker

    Sonos Five

    Sonos sonos.com

    $499.00

“If somebody told me that they had $500 to spend on a speaker, this is what I’d recommend. The Five is the biggest and best-sounding speaker that Sonos makes (not counting its soundbars) and it’s just super versatile. You can stream music to it a number of different ways (including AirPlay 2 or Spotify Connect). You can easily integrate it into a multi-room or home theater system if you have other Sonos speakers. You can hook it up to a turntable (with a built-in preamp) because it’s the only Sonos speaker with a line-in connection. And, if you were really hardcore, you could buy another Five, turn each of them sideways (so they’re both standing vertically) and configure them in a stereo pair. Like I said, it’s a super versatile speaker.” Tucker Bowe, Senior Staff Writer, Tech

    Webcam

25 best gadgets for men webcam

Why do I need this? O

OK, fine — maybe you don’t actually want to appear in all your high-def glory on Zoom for all your colleagues to see. But now that we’re conducting so much of our lives from the comfort of our laptop screens, you owe it to yourself to upgrade from your computer’s shitty, built-in camera. After all, it’s no longer just business that’s being conducted via that webcam — it’s also long-distance catchup sessions with family, hobbies and more. And you should really look your best, and not like some pixelated video game character.

One of the best — and most popular — such hi-def webcams available right now is the Logitech C920S ($70). With dual-mic, stereo audio capability, a privacy shutter and a clip-on design, it rests handily on your monitor and let’s you appear in all your WFH glory.

    Electric Toothbrush

    electric toothbrush

    Good: Gleem Electric Toothbrush ($20)
It’s a 2-minute brusher that isn’t going to connect to your phone or do anything to open your mind’s eye. Despite its simplicity, it’s miles better than manually brushing.

Better: Hum by Colgate Electric Toothbrush ($85)
The Hum brush, which is our top pick for a good-value electric toothbrush, delivers modern tech and handy quality-of-life features at a reasonable price. You get a few different brush modes (the sensitive mode is especially useful), build quality that isn’t going to break after a couple months, competitive pricing (not to mention frequent sales), app connectivity and loads of brushing data if you want to bother with it.

Best: Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Brush ($170)
In some ways this toothbrush is a caricature of the overbuilt, too-smart world of products we live in today. But the intensity and consistency of the Sonicare DiamondClean feels like going to the dentist every morning and night.

    Wine Opener

    Pulltap’s Double-Hinged Waiters Corkscrew

    Pulltap’s amazon.com

    $6.99

“Being an especially weak person and drinking wine (or especially cool beer or barleywine) too often has created for me the unique opportunity to analyze corkscrews better than perhaps anyone else living. I’ve tried the expensive ones that have their own see-through plastic display case, just in the event you’re the type of person who displays a bottle opener, and I’ve tried the ‘minimalist’ ones that I genuinely believe make removing a cork more difficult. Good people should opt for Pulltap’s $7 Waiter’s Corkscrew for the very simple and objectively true reason that it’s better than any wine opener that exists and is, again, $7. Blade for cutting foil, double-jointed tab for getting leverage on the cork, bottle opener for the ‘I’ll have a beer’ guys and of, course a corkscrew. Will Price, Editor, Home & Design

    Knife Hone

25 best gadgets for men knife hone

Why do I need this? Knife hone does not equal knife sharpener. You may not be able to see it, but the edge of your knife is full of microscopic misalignments and very tiny teeth that do the bulk of the cutting work you put the knife to. When you sharpen a knife, you give it a shiny and well-aligned set of teeth. Then, after regular use, the teeth bend out of shape, resulting in a knife that won’t perform as well. Sliding the blade against a knife hone brings the teeth back into alignment, keeping the knife sharper for longer.

Most knife hones (sometimes called “steels”) are the same: about a foot of heavy stainless steel with a slip-free handle so you don’t drop it on your toes. Henckels’ affordable option ($20) doesn’t do anything different in this regard, but it’s a favorite in professional kitchens and regularly goes on sale.

    Multi-Tool

    multi tools

    Good: Gerber Armbar Drive ($39)
“Multi-tool” can mean many things, and “pliers-included” doesn’t necessarily have to be one of them. For multi-utility functionality that won’t sag your pocket like a brick, Gerber’s Armbar Drive includes only a few often-needed tools: a knife, scissors, screwdriver and bottle opener (plus a few more).

    Better: Leatherman Bond ($50)
The Bond may be new as of 2021, but it cuts a direct line to the PST (Pocket Survival Tool) that Tim Leatherman created when he invented the multi-tool as we know it. The Bond is classic with its pliers-centric design and includes 14 tools in its 5.8-ounce framework. It’s simpler than some — and more affordable — but can handle most tasks that don’t call for a toolbox.

    Best: Leatherman Free P2 ($120)
How do you turn great into perfect? The answer always seems to be with magnets. Leatherman integrated them into its classic multi-tool design to reduce friction but not security and provide for easy, one-handed use of all 19 tools in the P2. Buyer beware: this tool is so smooth, you’ll find yourself flicking it open and shut all day long.

One 2 Skyline TKL Mechanical Keyboard

    Ducky mechanicalkeyboards.com

    $100.00

“Yes, your laptop has a keyboard attached to it, and yes it does work. But if we settled because things just work, life would be a drag. A mechanical keyboard isn’t better than what you already have, nor will it instantly make you a better typist. The draw isn’t functionality or efficiency; it just feels better. This one, from a brand called Ducky, is compact and comes with a little flair, but you could easily find something more muted in look with a little browsing. External Hard Drive

    25 best gadgets external hd

Why do I need this? In an era of Dropbox, iCloud and Google Drive, the external hard drive might seem like a dinosaur of days past, but their utility is probably summed up by the (paraphrased) words of JG Wentworth. It’s your data, and you need it now. External hard drives — most are technically SSDs (solid state drives) these days — do two things really well. They keep huge swaths of data on ice, locally and for no monthly fee, and they transfer said data outrageously quickly.

A very, very good Dropbox transfer will go at something like 30MB/second, the Samsung T7 ($150) — our favorite portable SSD — will transfer at more than 1000 MB/s.

    Beard Trimmer

Philips Norelco Ultimate Beard Trimmer Series 9000

    Norelco amazon.com

    $122.00

“For keeping facial hair trimmed, there’s nothing better than an electric beard trimmer. It’s more efficient and effective than a pair of scissors, it’s more convenient and less expensive than trips to the barber, and it’s dead-simple to use. Philips Norelco makes a number of great trimmers, but the Series 9000 may be the most convenient. It works for 2 hours after a single charge, it’s completely waterproof and it features 30 length settings and a stainless steel skin guide. What’s more, it’s fully washable and easy to clean, so you can incorporate beard trimming into any part of your grooming routine.” John Zientek, Editor, Style

    Headphone Amp

    25 best gadgets headphone amp

Why do I need this? Sure, you can listen to music via your computer’s headphone output. But if you do, you don’t know what you’re missing. If you’re a music lover, a gamer, or you use a pair of quality headphones — especially of a variety that has a high impedance, such as an open-back pair — then you really need a dedicated headphone amplifier. This gadget plugs into your audio setup and drives your thirsty pair of headphones so that they can sound their best, and the difference is often staggering. You might not even recognize the music coming out of your laptop.

The IEMagni from Schiit Audio ($119) is an excellent choice to power all different types of headphones — even the especially thirsty ones with high impedances. Its incredibly low noise floor is a must for audiophiles, while its affordable price is perfect for casual listeners.

    Hand Coffee Grinder

    hand coffee grinders

Smart Spend: Hario Mni Slim Ceramic Coffee Mill ($30)
With the Hario Ceramic Coffee Mill, you lose coffee capacity, but you get a space-saving hand coffee grinder. It holds 24 grams of coffee, and it keeps grounds uniform in size without requiring too much effort. Because it uses ceramic burrs, the grinder transfers less heat to the beans, which can dull coffee flavor.

Better: Hario Skerton Pro Hand Grinder ($60)
Hario has made a name for itself in the coffee-brewing industry, and with its Skerton Pro hand grinder, you get consistent, even coffee grounds for not too much money. The hand grinder features a burr stabilizer, stepped grind adjustment and a silicone grip. Hand grinding coffee is not fun, but with the Skerton Pro at least it’s not torture.

    Best: Kinu M47 Grinder ($199+)
Hand coffee grinders are notoriously strenuous to use, but the Kinu M47 Grinder makes it as painless as possible — for a price. It has a thumb stopper, which prevents the grinder from slipping in your hand, an easy-to-adjust grind size selector and a magnetic grounds catcher. You’ve never seen uniform coffee grounds like this before.

    Kitchen Scale

    25 best gadgets kitchen scale

Why do I need this? Quit eyeballing measurements in the kitchen — you’ll either end up with a crappy meal or a really great meal you’ll never be able to replicate to a tee. But what about measuring cups and spoons, you may ask? They’re useless once you realize how imprecise they are — does anyone really know what a cup of “packed” brown sugar is? Kitchen scales take the guesswork out of measuring, and they eliminate the need for separate measurement tools. Plus, they make portion control a breeze so you get the perfect serving size for every meal.

Another great thing about kitchen scales: they’re cheap. This one from the budget cooking gear makers at Escali is $25 and works like a charm. You even get to pick the dang color.

    Ballpoint Pen

U.S. Government Retractable Ball Point Pen

    Skilcraft amazon.com

    $19.04

    $10.71 (44% off)

“Any cheap old pen can crudely get the job done only to then be tossed or lost, but there’s a private pleasure to keeping one on hand that you specifically enjoy using. In a digital world, putting ink to paper is less common, so signing a document or even taking notes can feel a little special and satisfying in a getting-back-to-nature way. The weight of a pen and texture of paper… it deserves the right instrument. (I also like to twirl a pen.)

That, however, doesn’t necessarily mean you need to spend a fortune. I find that Skillcraft’s US Government pens feel nice to grip (and twirl), write smoothly and have a cool story. (They’ve been made for decades to government specifications and also serve a good purpose by employing the blind in their production.) For around $10, this is the kind of pen with which you (or a giftee) can develop a relationship.” Zen Love, Staff Writer, Watches

    Kitchen Thermometer

    25 best gadgets kitchen thermometer

Why do I need this? No amount of pressing a steak, chicken or pork tenderloin will accurately judge internal temperature. With steak (and to some extent pork), your problems are limited to under- or over-done food, which is a nuisance. Chicken is different gravy in this respect. Lots of passionate home cooks grew up with macho TV chefs that suggested you could gauge when food would be done through feel; they couldn’t and you can’t. ThermoWorks makes the absolute best thermometers, and the ChefAlarm is the best for home use. Get one and stop doing this weird finger thing.

There are more affordable and more expensive kitchen thermometers, but ThermoWorks’ Chef Alarm ($65) remains the best use of your money. Thanks to its magnetic back and long probe cable, it’s good for quick temp checks for grilled meats and tracking a roast chicken’s core temp from fridge to a perfect 165.

    Tablet

    tablets

Good: Amazon Fire HD 10 ($150)
Ideal if you’re on a budget and are looking for something to rewatch Mad Men in bed with. It’s Amazon’s best tablet, it’s less than $200, it runs most streaming services flawlessly and you’re not going to be too upset if your kid yeets it across the room.

    Better: Apple iPad ($329)
It’s last year’s iPad, and it still rules. In usual Apple fashion, it blends software and hardware flawlessly, and the previous year’s model is a better value than any of the new models.

    Best: Apple iPad Pro ($799)
The Pro is for professional. These iPads were built for folks working in creative fields who need access to advanced displays and processing power, but their speed and improved built-in cameras are great for regular people, too.

    Lighter

    Slide Lighter

    Tetra Tetra

    $22.00

“The first time I ever witnessed Tetra’s Slide Lighter, I wasn’t sure what was happening. Up close, it’s clearer — there’s a coil lighter tucked under a sliding door — but from afar, I was watching someone ash their cigarette into someone else’s e-cigarette. After sparking — get it? — a conversation about it, I bought my own, mostly for the novelty. (I don’t smoke cigarettes.) But I carry it most days, alongside my wallet or tangled up in my keys. (It’s three inches shorter than the newest iPhone.)

If a stranger — because yes, we’re seeing those again — asks for a lighter, I can slide the door and spark their cig from an arm’s length away through rain, snow and wind. The coil heats up like the ones on an electric stove or in a car, proving capable of catching fire to cigarettes and cigars (from a few different angles), joints (if those are legal in your jurisdiction), and even paper or twigs to serve as kindling.” Evan Malachosky, Assistant Editor, Style

    Spice Grinder

    25 best gadgets spice grinder

Why do I need this? You need spices to make a delicious meal, no doubts about it. Compared to fresh spices, pre-ground spices are bottom-of-the-barrel stuff (sorry, but it’s true). Pre-ground spices are convenient and all, but nothing beats freshly ground spices, and the best way to do it is with a motorized spice grinder. The classic mortar and pestle is amazing for crushing a pinch or two of spices, but when you’re looking to grind a lot or grind often, the spice grinder is the way to go.

As with most small kitchen appliances, KitchenAid is a solid bet here. Its spice grinder ($40) is less fussy than others and dishwasher safe.

    Desk Knife

    Good: Opinel No. 8 ($17)
The 8.5cm blade is a little more knife than you need, but the ergonomic perfection of the size is undeniable, especially if you don’t have to worry about finding space in your pockets for it. Doesn’t hurt that the design has been around since the 19th century.

Better: Deluxe Tinker Swiss Army Knife ($50)
A simple folder works well for most tasks, preparedness is next to godliness (is that how it goes?), and a mid-level Swiss Army Knife — complete with multiple blades, scissors, screwdriver, pliers, tweezers, a wire stripper and more — keeps you ready for your daily allotment of BS.

Best: The James Brand The Carter ($159)
Excellent material quality, clever opening mechanics and great looks. The James Brand knives can run pricey, but they’re damn nice.

    Mobile Hotspot

ZTE ZMAX Connect Mobile Hotspot 4G LTE

    ZTE amazon.com

    $64.95

“As with water, a few hours without Wi-Fi and things get dicey. Mobile hotspots are the 100-gallon drum of water in an internet desert. With a hotspot, wherever you can make a phone call you can connect to the internet in a fairly secure fashion. Yes, you could use your phone itself for this nearly all modern smartphones have a personal hotspot feature that works just fine but in doing so your phone’s battery life will be a plate of hot dogs in front of Joey Chestnut.”Will Price, Editor, Home & Design

    Smart Plug

25 best gadgets wyze smart plug

Why do I need this? Smart plugs are the holy trinity: they’re efficient, lazy, cheap. You can get ’em for $10 a pop, they streamline your day-to-day and they save you money. Schedule your air purifier, humidifier, coffee maker or radio to turn on when you need them. Restart your Wi-Fi router with your phone, without fishing it out of the dark corner where you hide it. They cut back on vampire power, too.

There are smart plugs that are more efficient, and smart plugs that offer more features, but there aren’t any other smart plugs available for $10 or less that still work without a hitch. If you’re starting to make your home smart, get things going with Wyze plugs.

Good: Bosch 12-Volt Max Cordless ($129)
The best budget cordless 12-volt drill, full stop. It’s lightweight, has an integrated LED light that activates with the drill and it’s frequently on sale. You can’t ask for more from a value buy.

Better: DeWalt Xtreme 12-Volt Cordless ($149)
Essentially a more thoughtfully designed version of the above Bosch drill, albeit for $20 or so extra. The grip is far more ergonomic, and the balance of the drill makes much more sense.

Best: DeWalt Xtreme 20-Volt Cordless ($200)
You won’t need to upgrade from 12- to 20-volt unless you plan on doing more and more demanding home projects. Think building a deck vs. hanging art. Other than the power, it’s got the same balance and clever grip design the other DeWalt Xtreme cordless drill has.

    $349.00 (13% off)

“The only people who don’t think a post-workout massager isn’t necessary are people who haven’t used a post-workout massager. There are a few big names out there now, but the Hyperice Hypervolt Plus is where to look first. Pull it out after especially heavy workouts when your muscles feel too tight to move comfortably. Follow that up with some lighter massaging on rest days and you won’t be hit as hard by delayed-onset muscle soreness. It’s the only thing that keeps me moving after back day.” —Will Price, Editor, Home & Design

Made In is getting into the fishing category. No, it’s not dropping a fishing rod, but it is expanding its knife collection with a fishing knives set. The knives were designed with Tom Colicchio, a James Beard Award-winning chef and Top Chef judge. Included in the set are two eight-inch blades: the Flexible Fillet Knife, which is straight-edged for cutting, deboning, skinning and filleting, and the Utility Knife, which is serrated to help lob off heads, prep bait or work with frozen fish.
