In 2019, McLaren owners were treated to a number of high-class bags to match their snazzy new rides. As full electrification inches ever closer, we can’t wait to see what leading manufacturers have in store for us down the line. Recognized for its high-performance and luxury-tier motorcycles, many are eager to learn about what Ducati has in store. Before they do, Italdesign unveils its 860-E Concept and a brief overview of its possible specifications.
So far, we’ve showcased several promising proposals from established marques. In fact, there are even some that are already commercially available. In 2019, the Italian motorcycle brand’s CEO Claudio Domenicali hinted at emission-free plans.
Furthermore, he even went on to say that it was “not far away from series production.” Fast forward to April 2021 and Ducati sales executive Franceso Milicia says otherwise. It appears we won’t be getting an all-electric superbike anytime soon. As such, we have no choice but to see what Italdesign envisions for the future.
This is a tribute to an iconic sports bike but with a more sustainable powertrain. It’s sad that we won’t ever see a working model, but renders should keep us busy until that happens. Although Ducati is not completely rejecting the idea of zero-emission configurations, the 860-E Concept is the closest we can get right now.
Italdesign starts off with the legendary 860 GT sports bike and tweaks it with a retro-futuristic outline. The 860-E Concept features contemporary upgrades such as LED lighting, upside-down forks, dual-rotor disc brakes, and a single-sided swingarm to name a few.
Being a digital render, we can only speculate about its electric powertrain. Aside from the quiet hum of its motors, the output should match or even exceed that of the traditional version. Italdesign’s take on the Ducati 860-E Concept is on point from a visual standpoint.

With travel restrictions starting to ease in some countries, it’s time to de-stress with an overseas trip. But if you’re still feeling cautious amid the pandemic, then a holiday at the Villa Morabeza Costa Rica should ease your mind.

Those who are interested in watches seem to come to a singular realization at some point — that is, that changing a strap can completely change the look of a timepiece. Which band to use is so much a consideration that good watches often linger on shelves both physical and digital because they’re attached to less-than-becoming straps. What’s more: you can easily get away with having one great, versatile watch and a bunch of inexpensive straps, and that’s it. You just need to know how to properly change a strap, which is what we’re gonna go over today (keep in mind that we won’t be covering changing or sizing metal bracelets).
NOTE: In this guide, we deal with two different kinds of watches: ones with lug holes and ones without. We also deal with both NATO/single pass-style straps as well as two-piece types.
The NATO strap is an old standby from the days of issued military watches — you can read all about their history here and see our favorite ones here. Suffice it to say that a NATO is a pass-through strap comprised of two pieces of nylon (or less commonly, leather). These two pieces are threaded through the watch in such a way that the watches can be hung up by the straps as inventory and the watch heads won’t fall off. (Also, the two strap pieces prevent the watch head from slipping around on the strap when it’s affixed to your wrist.)
If you’re removing one of these, realize that the watch from which you’re removing it may contain fixed spring bars, meaning that rather than be, you know — springy — they’re actually soldered into the watch’s case and cannot be removed. In this case (or in general, as you typically remove a NATO strap without the need to remove the spring bars), first reach around to the back of the watch strap and slip the bottom keeper (the little metal D-ring-type-thingy) off the bottom half of the strap.
Now you should be left with one long piece of nylon (or leather) threaded through the spring bars of your watch, with the smaller piece of material hanging loose.
Now gently pull the strap through the bottom spring bar of the watch. Don’t yank on it like the stuck front door to your dingy Hoboken apartment — especially if it’s a vintage watch — you could potentially bend or break the spring bar if you’re dealing with a thicker NATO strap. If it feels like the strap won’t easily pass through the spring bars, remove them first. If not, pull the NATO through the bar.
Now simply pull the rest of the NATO strap free of the top spring bar, again being careful on older watches not to damage anything.
Now you should be left with a lonely, naked watch that looks vaguely like this. (Well, it may look nothing like this, but it should be strap-less.)

If you’re beginning with a strap-less watch head, reverse these steps: first, thread the longer half of the NATO through the top spring bar, taking care that the shorter retaining piece is facing away from you.
Continue pulling the strap until the watch head sits near the topmost keeper. Try to place the watch head in a position in which it will sit comfortably on your wrist once it’s affixed to the strap. Generally, you can adjust the watch head a bit once it’s on the strap by simply sliding it along the length of the NATO, but sometimes, if the strap is thick enough, this is difficult to do after the fact. We’ll cover this situation later on in the post when we speak about Rolex spring bars.
Once the watch head seems like it’s in a good spot along the length of the NATO, thread the bottom half of the strap through the bottom spring bar.

After the watch head is affixed to the long side of the NATO, it should look something like this.
Now, fold the bottom tip of the longer (main) piece of the strap through the lower metal keeper on the shorter (retaining) side of the strap, like so.
Pull the long (main) part of the NATO all the way through the keeper, and you’re good to go. Now, if the watch isn’t in an ideal position once the strap is on your wrist, you should be able to slide it up or down along the length of the NATO.
Certain watches — especially older ones — had a magical feature called “drilled lugs,” meaning that the watch case itself was drilled through at the lugs such that you could poke a special tool through the hole and release the spring bars in order to change a strap. When a case doesn’t have these holes, the operation is made slightly more difficult, and there’s more risk of scratching the back of the case. Additionally, if you have a Rolex sports watch with drilled lugs and you want to affix a NATO or single-pass strap, you may need to remove the spring bars in order to do so. Why? Because Rolex uses specialized, extra-thick spring bars that sit closer to the watch case, meaning that there’s less space in which to slide a strap through.
You’re going to need a tool for this part of the job — one that has this pointy-looking thing on one end. (Here are our picks for best strap-changing tools, in case you missed it).
Ideally when you do this — and especially if you don’t want to scratch your watch — the watch should be secured in a special holder that itself is either attached to a vice or sitting on a non-slip surface (check out the special holder as part of this tutorial on how to open a screw-back watch case back). In reality, many people just plop the watch down on non-slip surface (hopefully covered by some sort of cloth that won’t scratch the watch crystal), or, worse, but still possible — just hold it in their hand. If you change a strap this way, at least grip the watch firmly with the strap in your non-dominant hand so that it can’t go anywhere.
Push the strap-changing tool through the lug hole until you feel the spring-loaded end release from the lug.
Once this happens, use the tool and your non-dominant hand to wiggle the end of the spring bar free of the lug hole so that it doesn’t re-seat. This takes some finesse, as you can scratch the watch’s lugs on the end of the spring bar if you’re not careful. With practice, this operation becomes very quick and easy. Once the spring bar is free (beware of it flying across the room, and, if you’re smart, have spares on hand!), put it down someplace where you on’t lose it.
Repeat this process for the other side of the watch and the second spring bar.
Now, you should be left with a spring bar-less watch and a strap, and hopefully, two spring bars sitting on your desk someplace.
A Rolex Submariner serves double-duty as a watch with drilled lugs and a watch whose spring bars you’ll likely have to remove in order to thread a NATO or pull-through, single-piece strap. First, if you’re using a single-piece strap, as in this example, make sure the strap is facing the correct direction, and lay it over the back of the (spring bar-less) watch where you’d like it to sit on your wrist. This is important, because if the watch is a Rolex sport model, like a Submariner, you’ll have to remove the spring bar and re-seat the strap if you don’t seat it correctly the first time.
Grip the watch in your non-dominant hand and with your dominant hand, place the end of the first spring bar in one of the lug holes.
With the forked end of your spring bar tool, carefully (taking care not to scratch the back of the watch’s lugs) push the spring-loaded end of the spring bar away from the lug hole. Once it’s away from the top of the lug, carefully push down on the spring bar so that the end finds the lug hole and seats. The spring-loaded, central piece of the spring bar should pop into the lug hole, and you can check if it’s seated both by feel and by looking into the lug holes from outside the watch.
Once this process is complete for one side of the watch, repeat it for the second side and the second spring bar.
If you’re affixing a single-piece, pass-through strap, then you’re done. If you’re affixing a NATO to, say, a Rolex watch, finish threading the two halves of the NATO together as in the NATO strap guide above, and then you’re good to go.
Let’s say you have a watch without drilled lugs (i.e. there are no holes present on the outside of the case to access the spring bars), as is the case with this old-school Seiko on a two-piece strap: You can still change the strap yourself — it’s just going to take a bit more finesse and patience.
You’re going to need to use the fork-shaped end of the spring bar tool for this kind of work.
On a spring bar, the spring-loaded center section terminates in two small lips on either side of the bar that sit flush with the watch case. Gripping the watch (which really needs to be laying flat) with your non-dominant hand, slip the forked end of the spring bar tool in between the strap and the lug such that the space between the two halves of the fork catches this outer lip of the spring-loaded bar. Once you have it (if you’re dealing with a stiff leather strap, it will be harder to get the tool in between the strap and the case), pull the spring-loaded section toward yourself. Once it releases from the case, pull up slightly to clear the bar from the watch.
Once one side of the spring bar is free from the case, sometimes you can simply grab it and slide it out of the other side of the watch (especially with thinner spring bars). If not, you may have to repeat the previous process and dislodge the second half of the bar from the watch case.
Now your watch should be free. Whether you’re using s two-piece strap or a NATO, if your watch has non-drilled lugs, you’d use this same process to dislodge the spring bars from the case.
This process is more or less the same as with a watch with drilled lugs, but you can’t check that the spring bars are seated from the outside, so you have to be a bit more careful — if they’re not seated properly, the watch can go flying off your wrist. First, seat one end of the spring bar in a lug hole.
Use the forked end of the spring bar tool to affix the second half the spring bar using the same process that you would use for a watch with drilled lugs.
Again, be careful when pulling the spring bar toward you not to drag it across the watch case and scratch the lug.
Repeat for the opposite side of the watch.
Check that the spring bars are properly seated by gently moving them up and down and seeing if they dislodge. If not, you’re ready to wear and enjoy your watch with its new strap!

Normally, aggressive aerodynamic stylings full of sharp angles and edges are stereotypical of modern high-performance rides. It may look like an outdated jalopy from several generations ago, but it is deceptively more than that. We know how to appreciate retro aesthetics on modern models and the Plus Four CX-T checks all the boxes. What started out as a sketch, led the Morgan Motor Company team to tweak the standard platform with substantial modifications. Moreover, with the help of Rally Raid UK, they are endowing the Plus Four CX-T with everything it needs to surpass any challenge.
It’s practically to show off the robust and capable nature of the CX-Generation bonded aluminum chassis. The BMW 2.0-liter twin-turbo engine is intact along with the six-speed manual transmission. Output also remains the same at 255 horsepower with 295 lb-ft of torque.

You know Carhartt. The classic Detroit clothier was founded in 1889, when Hamilton Carhartt established Hamilton Carhartt & Company with plans to manufacture bib overalls for railroad workers. “Honest value for an honest dollar” was the company’s original slogan.
By 1910, the operation expanded into several states (South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, and California) and three different countries (France, Canada, and the UK). Through WWI and WWII Carhartt produced uniforms and other essentials for US servicemen, but the stock market collapse in-between (in 1929) nearly put the company out of business. Simultaneously, some of its most popular products were hitting their stride: the Chore Coat, first advertised in 1917, was increasingly commonplace.
Fast forward to 1974, orders placed for workers building the Alaskan Pipeline were a lifeline. A year later, Carhartt was doing private label work for big box stores like Sears and J.C. Penney. The Active Jac, Carhartt’s top-selling product today, although the beanie is gaining fast, launched soon thereafter. Through the ’80s, Carhartt became an attractive option for all types of blue collar workers. Then, as workwear slowly seeped into fashion circles, celebrities, musicians and other entertainers, even models, started wearing Carhartt, too.
By 1989, the brand had crossed the pond. Arriving in Europe via Swiss designer Edwin Faeh, Carhartt became an instant success at his store, All American Concept. In 1994, he acquired the exclusive rights to sell Carhartt in Europe under a new label, Work In Progress (WIP). Two years later, he purchased the rights to producing Carhartt products outside of the US, thus cementing his status as the official European offshoot of the U.S.-born company: Carhartt Work In Progress (WIP). But what is the difference between Carhartt and Carhartt WIP? Is one just made in Europe?
Think of the two parties’ relationship this way: Carhartt offered Carhartt WIP license to update the company’s pillar products — their worksite-ready chore coats, double-knee pants, Detroit Jackets, overalls, beanies, and beyond. With Carhartt’s blessing, Faeh makes adjustments to these signature items as he sees fit: tailoring a trouser to be more modern, making jackets in new colors, or collaborating with other designers. Faeh has a flair for streetwear, making Carhartt WIP the kind of Carhartt most fashion-inclined people actually want — even if they still just call it Carhartt.
That being said, yes, there are lots of Carhartt originals you can still cop over the revamped WIP editions — at over half the price. There’s the A18 Watch Beanie, for example. There’s the brand’s double-knee pants, too. But, be careful. Like Doc Martens, some of Carhartt’s products require serious commitment to break in, and ultimately, getting them to fit the way you envisioned is a decade-long ordeal. (Hence why vintage Carhartt sells for well above retail right now.) If you want workwear that’s flattering from the moment you put it on, go with Carhartt WIP. Sure, doing so might reinforce the trope of fashionable types wearing blue collar clothing purely for the aesthetic, but Carhartt WIP’s products are functional, too.
The brand, which has since come full circle by expanding to the US, makes Detroit Jackets from durable, 12 oz Dearborn canvas. Pairs of overalls and double-knee work pants constructed from thick-cut cotton, too. However, they also make graphic tees, patterned Chuck Taylors, and “C” logo ice cube trays. Whenever we sense a new pimple, we pray for an overnight miracle. And while there are pimple patches and spot treatments for these one-off breakouts, there is often a bigger boss to face. Many of us endure acne endlessly, even if it feels like we just have one or two pimples at any given time. So, how do you get to the root of the problem?
Assuming your condition isn’t totally inflammatory or genetic—in which case, your journey should start and end at the dermatologist’s office, for high-grade fixes—then it is easy to audit different parts of your day to root out the breakouts. By looking at the products you use, the things you ingest, the habits you maintain, and the hygiene you practice, you can drastically reduce persistent acne in a few months’ time. (We throw “90 days” on it since that’s an industry-standard amount of time; it gives your skin enough time to adjust to new habits while turning itself over almost entirely and retiring older skin cells.)

If you’re acne-prone, then your battle against blemishes often centers on the cleanser you use. For this reason, you should prioritize one with salicylic acid—or benzoyl peroxide, in steeper and more inflammatory cases. In particular, though, salicylic acid seeps into the pores to flush out oil and grime, while also clearing out trapped skin cells. This prevents the pore from forming a comedone over top the debris and keeps acne at bay. Use this cleanser first thing in the morning and before your bedtime regimen. If it’s harsh on your skin, consider a lighter formula, or use it solely at bedtime, swapping in a gentler pick for morning.
As noted later in this plan, you might also need a midday refresh. At this point, you can opt for a less prescriptive cleanser, and pick something gentle. This one serves simply to refresh the skin without any active or harsh ingredients and to mitigate any oil or grime buildup throughout the day.
Regardless, make sure all of your cleansers are oil-free, as well as the rest of your regimen.

In addition to needing an oil-free moisturizer, you want to ensure that it is non-comedogenic across the board (meaning, it won’t clog pores and in turn cause comedones, which is acne). Many people with persistent acne find that their moisturizer contains coconut oil or something similar that is especially occlusive and comedogenic for oily skinned / acne-prone people. (Ditto for oils of avocado or olive — some people have no issues with these ingredients, while others are extremely susceptible to comedones.) This is why “oil-free” is the best place to start with your moisturizer.

If you feel like moisturizers are especially occlusive on your skin (evidenced by a feeling of heftiness or excessive sweating), then look for lightweight formulas (often gel-based; ‘lightweight’ often indicates ‘oil-free’ but not always).
While you’re scrutinizing your cleanser and moisturizer ingredients, it’s worth auditing your diet and daily habits, too. It goes without saying that a healthy lifestyle reflects itself in your complexion, and unless your breakout is pertaining to hormones or stress, then it’s often your habits that are to blame. Things like refined grains and processed sugars, alcohol, dairy, chocolate, and whey protein can clog your pores. A close relative of mine also frequently cooked with coconut oil, and when she cut it out of her diet, found that her frequent breakouts soon cleared up too (if it’s comedogenic on the skin, then it can also impact skin from the inside).
On top of that, it’s important to get ample sleep and to drink lots of water—as these two things keep your bodily functions working properly, including all of your skin’s functions. Keeping skin resilient, nourished, and replenished (with water, sleep, and moisturizer), not only helps prevent breakouts but also helps skin rebound and heal acne blemishes faster. It’s bad enough enduring a big cystic blemish for a week or two, only to live with the dark mark for 6 months after the fact.
You wash your clothes frequently enough (I hope), but can you say the same for your bath towels and pillowcases? These things are breeding grounds for bacteria, and we press our faces into them on a daily basis — in the pillow cases’ case, for up to 8 hours a night. Just as we say not to touch your face often (since those germs can transfer to the face and wreak havoc), you need to consider everything that touches your face, and it’s likely that your pillows and towels are doing few favors unless they’re washed every week—or even more frequently. The same goes for hats that rest around your forehead.

Since you’re already going to prioritize a full night’s sleep, then do yourself an even bigger favor: Pair that ample rest with a thorough bedtime skincare regimen. This is the prime time to use aggressive, proactive ingredients on your skin while giving it the proper time to utilize those ingredients unencumbered. Secondly, your skin regenerates itself much faster overnight, so this is exactly when you want to use the prescriptive acne-fighting ingredients. Chief among them is retinol (or its herbal alternative, bakuchiol). Retinol is a Vitamin A derivative and is proven to reduce signs of aging on the skin while also shrinking the appearance of pores, controlling oil levels, and preventing/countering breakouts. It can be sensitive on skin at first — especially if it’s a prescription-grade option from the dermatologist, as opposed to an OTC product. (Talk to your dermo to settle on a choice, and to get a rundown of how to prepare skin for an introduction to such an ingredient. For example, you’ll definitely need to wear an SPF moisturizer by day, to counter extra sensitivity to sunlight.)
One brand that is particularly great for acne-prone skin is Apostrophe. They even have on-staff dermatologists who can assess your condition and prescribe a night cream (with or without retinol, and at various prescription grades). It’ll save you the time needed to make a dermo appointment, too.
Bedtime is also the right time to do an at-home skin peel—something acne-prone people should consider once weekly. By incorporating ingredients like glycolic and lactic acid (to lift dead skin cells) as well as salicylic acid (to unclog pores), these resurfacing products ensure that you sport your freshest, healthiest complexion while dissolving the buildup that is likely to clog pores. You shouldn’t do it more than once (sometimes twice) per week, since your skin won’t generate fresh enough cells to keep up with the peel powers. Once a week should suffice, so long as you use each product as directed.

In drier, colder months (or in air-conditioned rooms in summer), it is also imperative to use denser night creams (over top the retinol), to prevent overdrying of the skin. There’s a reason we often have the best skin of the year in hot, humid stretches of time. While you may be oiler than others, it still serves the purpose of keeping your skin nourished and resilient. Drying out your skin can lead to blemishes for the exact opposite reason—a lack of moisture. So, have a deeply nourishing night cream for any cold-air conditions.

If you are prone to oil accumulation (or even sweat buildup) throughout the day, then get ahead of this by keeping face wipes in your bag/pocket, or a gentle cleanser in your desk at work. You don’t need anything heavy duty, just something to flush away the buildup without drying your skin. (Follow with a non-comedogenic/oil-free moisturizer.) While it’s easy and obvious to wash your face morning and night from the comfort of your bathroom, it’s this 16-hour spread between those washes that often trips people up. Think of how much activity you’re enduring—even if you’re sitting in place for 8 hours, you’re eating and maybe sweating, and touching your face. Give yourself a quick, gentle refresh (especially if you break a sweat), and mitigate any oil/grime accumulation.

Everyone’s case is different. Your acne might be hormonal or stress related. It could be dietary or anchored in your daily habits. A dermatologist can get to the root of it better, and can also compare this against your skin type to provide a truly tailored plan. While the above actions should make a huge impact within a 3-month period, no advice is purely universal. Keep a dermo in your back pocket, and consult them whenever you need a targeted opinion.

Living in smaller homes is quickly catching on with people embracing minimalist lifestyles. As long as all the basic amenities are in place, it should be good enough. If you want to optimize the available space, many types of modular furniture are a clever alternative. Maybe something like the Cooking Box from Maiullari is the type of versatility your residence needs.
Normally, convertible fixtures require custom work. These days, even big-name manufacturers are getting in on the fun. Even with the growing demand, most of the available models focus on the living and sleeping areas of the house. Perhaps Maiullari knows it and opts to focus somewhere else.
The Cooking Box lives up to its namesake as it looks exactly like one, albeit more stylish, when not in use. Designed by Giovanni Pesce, the monobloc body measures 38.2 inches deep when close. When opened, the main section is thicker at 25.4 inches, while the other half is at 12.8 inches.
Other dimensions of the Cooking Box were not available as of this writing. One side is fixed to your kitchen wall as it needs to be hooked up to your plumbing and power outlet. Here you can find a sink, hob, oven, dishwasher, and fridge. Meanwhile, the lid smoothly swings open with the help of wheels and functions as the pantry.
There are shelves to hold bottles, condiments, and other meal preparation necessities. We can also see some drawers for even more storage. Maiullari points out that a folding table is included as well. The outer surface looks like concrete, but we’re guessing it’s also wooden like the interior. The Cooking Box may seem innovative, but it caters to a niche market.

It was virtually impossible to buy a webcam in 2020, as the avalanche of video calls made so many of us realize just how bad computers’ built-in webcams can be.
Fortunately the price spikes and shortages are now (mostly) over, and right now you can quite easily get a great external webcam for a reasonable price. And you’re going to want to do so because video conferences and remote work don’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.
When shopping for an external webcam, you need to make sure it works with your computer, first and foremost. Then you need to decide how good (or expensive) of a webcam you actually need; most capture a 1080p video (which is likely a big improvement over what you current have), but there are a few higher-priced ones that can capture 4K.
Finally, each webcam is a little different. They have different design features, such as privacy shutters, built-in mics or lighting. Others come with built-in software that allows you to customize settings, like autofocus, exposure and field of view. You want make sure it fits your needs.

The Logitech C920S Pro HD is a plug-and-play webcam that works with either Mac and PC. It has the same L-shaped design as its predecessor, the C920, so it’s really easy to attach to a monitor and, but also comes with an attachable privacy cover. It’s capable of capturing 1080p video and its built-in dual microphone array is great at picking up audio.

You can think of this as upgraded version of the Logitech C920S Pro HD, as it has a similar horizontal design, L-shaped mounting clip and an attachable privacy cover. The big difference is that it’s one of the few webcams that is capable of capturing 4K video. It supports premium features like autofocus, auto light adjustment and motion tracking with high dynamic range. And you can choose between three different-field of-views (65-, 78- and 90-degrees) via the companion app. The downside, of course, is price.

The Kiyo Pro is a better version of the entry-level Kiyo — but it comes at almost double the price. It still only captures a 1080p picture, but its superior sensor allows it to capture a higher frame rate (1080p at 60fps vs the Kyo’s 1080p at 30fps) and it supports HDR (the Kiyo does not). It has a more durable lens, a better and more flexible mounting system, and you can choose between three field-of-views (80-, 90- and 103-degrees). Unfortunately, it also isn’t compatible with Macs.

The Anker PowerConf C300 is an excellent all-around webcam that captures 1080p video with autofocus and has a built-in mic. It connects to your computer via USB-C, which is a rarity, so it’s a great plug-and-play option for people with newer laptops (it also comes with a USB-C to USB-A adapter). The PowerConf C300 is unique because it allows you customize a bunch of settings (including brightness, contrast, sharpness) and switch between three different fields-of-view via its companion app.

Razer’s entry-level webcam, the Kiyo, was created with streamers in mind. It has a built-in ring light — which is highly adjustable — that allows you to make sure your face is well lit at all times. It also comes with companion software that allows you to customize various exposure and autofocus settings. The only real downside is that it doesn’t with your Macs at all. Also, the built-in mic isn’t the best. But if you have PC and an external mic, the Kiyo is a solid webcam that captures a sharp 1080p video.

Released in mid-2021, the UltraSharp Webcam is a true 4K webcam (a rarity) that connects to your computer via USB-C (another rarity). You can adjust the resolution and the frame rates of the captured video — it can capture 4K at 30fps or 24 fps, and 1080p video at up to 60fps — and it also has some neat AI tricks to keep you in frame and in focus. The only real downside is that, considering its steep price, it still lacks a built-in mic.

The world of motorcycles is full of iconic names and brands, but arguably none have quite the punch of Harley-Davidson — at least, here in the U.S. For more than a century, the bikemaker has largely defined American motorcycle culture with its burly cruisers and other open-road-crushing machines.
And while the times have indeed started to change — the last few years have seen H-D serve up its first electric motorcycle, its first ADV and a new line of e-bikes — it isn’t giving up on the rides that made it famous. For 2021, the brand is rolling out an all-new version of the Sportster; to find out what it’s like, we headed out west to take it for a test ride.

The Harley-Davidson Sportster S is a category-eluding motorcycle. The “-ster” part of the equation goes back to 1957, when the first Sportster debuted. Long and low was the principle then, as was a V-twin engine, and this entirely new Sportster is still a V-twin, and still sleek and low, but absolutely nothing is the same. Harley-Davidson says it’s revolutionary, and that’s not marketing hype in the slightest.
Entirely. The only thing in common with the outgoing Sportster is the name. You can sign up to order yours now, and it should be hitting dealers shortly.
Darn near everything, but I’ll start with the guts. This 1,250cc twin is a similar powertrain to what’s in the Pan America, but whereas that bike churns out 150 horsepower, the Revolution Max T for the Sportster “only” produces 121 hp. Um, that’s plenty, trust me. Because rather than the flatter torque curve of the Pan-Am, here Harley’s emphasized take-off. So what you lose in total propulsion, you gain in a bike that wants to fire off the line, all the way to its 9,500 rpm redline.
Also, this a thoroughly modern power plant, with variable valve timing that enables really smooth and easy revving, whether you’re being lazy and not downshifting from fourth to third gear at 40 mph and just grabbing more throttle, or shifting aggressively and keeping it boiling, it’ll freight-train you forward from just above 2,000 rpm. The sweet spot hits around 3,500 rpm, where power feels black-hole deep — but you also get excellent engine braking from the high-compression V-twin.

Harley has a storied history in its engines, but “thumpers” can be exhausting and overly loud. How to preserve the legend while not letting it anchor you to your past? One way was to make certain this bike still makes noise, and it does, but the Revolution Max T’s anthem isn’t the tympanic brain-bruising blare of yore. It’s a pleasant, guttural churn that’s ballsy, but a bit less look-at-me showy. (Unless you go WOT and really want to rattle the neighbor’s windows at 2am.) In developing the Revolution Max T, engineers made certain to move the air box forward in the chassis, so when the engine’s chugging air you don’t hear it; you only get the pleasing roar of the twin-piped exhaust.
One last point on the engine — that’s not just about the engine. See, this bike is rider-tunable; while you wouldn’t default to think of a Harley like you think of a tech-laden BMW, that’s finally starting to shift. The Sportster S engine has multiple power modes that you can select via a four-way pad controller on the handlebar. You see those reflected in an entirely digital color TFT display that, oh by the way, can also pair to your phone, for turn-by-turn directions via the HD app, or to play music to Bluetooth-enabled earbuds or an in-helmet system like a Cardo or Sena. Apps? Bluetooth? Ride modes? Son, this isn’t the leather-vest Harley-Davidson your cool bad-seed uncle rode.

And I mean that in a good way. Even though, for instance, there’s absurd torque, Harley’s included a swell suite of safety tech, too, including both systems to prevent you from wheelie-ing when maybe you didn’t plan on that, to measuring available cornering grip and either cutting throttle or adding ABS, or both, all to ensure that you stay on your intended line.
How all this translates to riding, I’ll get to a moment, but in the pre-set engine modes this ranges from immediate throttle tip-in for Sport (as in, cattle-prodded-pit-bull); to Road, which offers a great balance of predictability with easy roll-on throttle; as well as Rain, where you really want the heavy hand of coddling to keep your Harley upright. And there are two custom modes, should you want a mixture of more power but perhaps greater traction control, say.
For this test ride, we bombed out of central L.A. and wound our way up Angeles Crest. This is the go-to for fast-car or fast-bike owners who want to get out the grind of SoCal traffic and test their machines — and with turn after stacked-loop switchback, it would be a tough proving ground for a lesser bike than the Sportster S.

I wasn’t on a lesser bike, though; I was on a new-school Harley with a maximum lean angle of 34 degrees, a stiff Showa inverted fork that delivers exceptionally linear steering feel, and massive, Dunlop-developed tires (160/70TR17 73V front; 180/70R16 77V rear). Oh, and even though it looks insanely long, the 59.8-inch wheelbase tells you something else. Combine that shorter footprint than you expect and a seat height of only 29.6 inches, and the Sportster S is very nimble when the going gets delicate, and yet seems to elongate as you quicken the pace. It’s grippy when you need it to be, and friendly to the point of a bit nutty when you start to crack your wrist and go hell bent. It’s not a crotch rocket, but it may be the sportiest, most confidence-inspiring Harley in decades.
But here’s the uncanny part: Back off the gas and tool along and your face will be stuck on a CBD-like perma-grin, because that engine is tuned to allow super-kitten-friendly puttering, too. It won’t snarl; and the handling is so placid and predictable you could grocery-fetch daily on the Sportster S and be head-cleared and jolly, without ever asking this Harley to roar.
Yes, two cons — and one big pro.
First con: This one is fixable, but the Sportster S has a default of forward controls, with your feet stretched out. Because there’s only two inches of rear-wheel travel, what you want to make the potholes go down easier is the ability to stand up to absorb the pavement biting back.
Luckily, Harley is going to sell a mid-controls option. After testing both versions…get the mid setup. It puts you in a far more athletic position for riding the twisties, and that just gives you better confidence for anything sketchy you might need to react to as well.

Second con: The up-sweeping exhaust pipes are a nod to some Harley flat track racing history — and no doubt, they define the vibe of this bike. But they also direct a ton of heat right where you don’t want it, on the inside of your right leg.
Yep, these pipes are shielded, but if you’re noodling from stoplight to stoplight in 90-degree heat, you’re going to feel that hibachi scorch. It’s not a dealbreaker, but my guess is Harley’s going to offer some mods to overcome those meat-singe challenges.
One big pro: It’s almost impossible to overstate the significance of this bike for Harley-Davidson. Yes, the Pan America opens up a new space for the brand, but as vice-president of styling and design Brad Richards said, “We’re really looking for white spaces with Sportster.”
What that means: they’re going to riff well beyond Sportster. The engine can be scaled down in displacement, and the chassis is excellent; it’s stiff, and delivers gobs of agility. You can imagine a more upright position with some more suspension travel, to chase the smaller ADV category; you can imagine attacking the Ducati Scrambler. Basically, if you can dream of where Harley goes from here, with this modifiable engine and excellent chassis design, you can bet they’ve already got plans. And that’s great news if you’re a fan of awesome motorcycles made in the USA.

As production of the previous NSX draws to a close, Acura now shares a teaser of what’s in store. Making it debut this week at the 2021 Monterey Car Week, the carmaker is reportedly auctioning off the first-ever commercial unit of the supercar. The 2022 NSX Type-S will be a fitting send-off for the platform and a special one at that.
Proceeds from the sale of series model number one will head to charity says the official press release. Officially recognized as the second-generation model of Honda’s luxury division, the 2022 Acura NSX Type-S will bring out the very best of the machine.
According to an announcement earlier this month, the reason behind its retirement lies with changing emission regulations. With many of the world’s automakers now committing to greener technology, it’s leading to some heartbreaking decisions.
Acura is making a major one due to the rising expenses of reworking the powertrain. It appears that upgrading the hybrid configuration of the high-performance vehicle is quite costly. Therefore, collectors eager to snap one up should get their checkbooks ready for the final run.
Only 350 examples of the 2022 Acura NSX Type S are heading to the assembly line. Honda is reportedly allocating 300 units for the United States, while the remaining 50 are heading to other markets. In its standard setup, a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 and three electric motors are calling the shots.
Although we are yet to hear about the official specifications, rumors claim a significant bump to 650 hp from 500 hp. The 2022 Acura NSX Type S also promises to deliver better handling, enhanced acceleration, and more. It’s possible that changes to its aerodynamic silhouette are on the menu as well.
