Caviar Turns Samsung’s Latest Foldable Handsets Into The Skull Capsule Collection

Tech industry insiders have been hinting at something major for Samsung’s roadmap for 2021. It was hinted that a new Galaxy Note model was not in development. Instead, what the latest Unpacked event unveiled were new foldables: The Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3. In Caviar’s hands, we see these transform into the Ragnarok and Catrina Calavera for the Skull capsule collection.

We have been featuring the Russian jeweler’s works for so long now. Still, we remain in awe of how they turn these flagship devices into extravagant accessories. Just like the Skull capsule collection. Given the foldable smartphones already come with premium price tags, Caviar’s clients are willing to pay even more for something more exclusive.

Up first is the Galaxy Z Fold3. Caviar goes for a black and red theme here as the Ragnarok now flaunts a dark titanium body with premium composites. Laser engravings of crosshatch patterns dot the rear cover. It becomes the backdrop of a polished titanium skull with scarlet jewelry enamel flames. Additionally, the eyes are actually rubies.

Next in the Skull capsule collection is the Catrina Calavera, which begins its journey as a regular Galaxy Z Flip3. The outer shell of the clamshell handset is now titanium with 18K gold inlays. A rose emblem in red and green composites occupy the upper section. Below, there is an 18K white gold skull. The decorative frame and skull sport sapphires, rubies, and emeralds.

Each is limited to a few examples only. Only 99 units for the Ragnarok, while the Catrina Calavera only gets 20. Perhaps this is a hint that there are more special editions aside from the Skull capsule collection on the way. We’re wondering what Caviar will be working on next.

Elon Musk Says A Humanoid Robot Helper Called The Tesla Bot Is In Development

We love our boy Elon Musk despite his eccentricities. His haters constantly nitpick at his flaws but turn a blind eye when it comes to the man’s achievements. Aside from growing his established brands, he is likewise juggling several other projects. Although some might not see the light of day, we really hope the Tesla Bot eventually makes it to production.

This reveal is a big surprise for many given Musk’s recent opinions regarding artificial intelligence. He supposedly warns that advancements in machine learning may someday become a threat to humanity. Therefore, after seeing the Tesla Bot, we’re wondering where the guy actually stands when it comes to AI.

There are already rumors at this recent unveiling is just another farce for the man, but let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. For the longest time, we have been dreaming of owning a humanoid robot. Don’t deny it because you do too.

The Tesla Bot might be the first to become commercially available given the company’s resources and tech. So far, we like the overall design which shows us a faceless automaton presented in a two-tone colorway.

The outline of the body looks masculine and we’re not sure if there are plans for an effeminate model. According to the presentation, human safety is crucial, which is why users can easily disable or avoid it when things go haywire. Its primary function is to take over most of our mundane tasks like cleaning.

Packing hardware and sensors like those used by Tesla’s autopilot systems, it should have an excellent awareness of its surroundings. The Tesla Bot stands 5’8” tall and weighs 125 lbs. Movements come from 40 electromechanical actuators. We can’t wait to see a working prototype demo soon.

The 15 Best Sofas and Couches For Every Budget and Style

best sofas couches gear patrol lead full

Chandler Bondurant

The couch is the centerpiece of a home. It’s a place you, guests and roommates are naturally drawn. Thus, a good couch pulls double duty: not only does it have to be comfortable, but it also has to look good. There are so many options when it comes to sofas whether it’s the fabric, style or size. Luckily, shopping for a new sofa is easier than ever. Instead of having to go in stores to buy a sofa, you can easily shop online for one that meets all of your needs. So whether you’re balling on a budget or not, these are the best sofas and couches to squeeze through the front door.

Best Overall Sofa

Burrow Nomad Sofa

Burrow offers the best combination of all possible features in a couch or sofa that’s not wildly expensive. It’s sturdy, comfortable, customizable, modular and ships within a week of ordering. On top of that, its upholstery fabric is remarkably stain-resistant, there’s a charging cable built into it and its quietly mid-century aesthetic is pretty easy to fold into most living situations. It does all of this and keeps the price for a full-size, fully customized sofa just over $1,000.

Best Splurge Sofa

Benchmade Catwalk Sofa

Benchmade combines a massive array customization options with sound build quality and, critically, relatively quick delivery. Where most made-to-order sofas take anywhere from 4 to 10 weeks to deliver, BenchMade Modern’s typically ship within a week of ordering. The Catwalk sofa features generous cushion size and slim, airy legs. This combo makes for a cozy couch that doesn’t cramp your style.

Best Budget Sofa

Ikea Finnala Sofa

One of Ikea’s many budget-minded sofa offerings, Finnala’s strength is modularity and the use of a cotton-poly blend rather than straight poly, like the more popular Vimle.

Best Made-in-USA Sofa

Floyd The Sofa

Well-made, no-nonsense furniture that ships easily and looks just a touch different to everything else out there — that’s the quickest way to describe Floyd’s value proposition. Its sofa breaks down into a pile of very packable pieces. As such, it’s probably the most shipping friendly unit on the market. Thanks to a bench frame and armrests that double as pillows, it’s very much its own thing.

Best Affordable Modern Sofa

Zinus Sunny Modern Sofa

Though Zinus is best known for its ultra-cheap mattresses, the company makes ultra-cheap sofas, too. The wood-frame Sunny Modern Sofa features tufted foam cushions, a 100-day trial period, free shipping (all in one box!) and a soft hit on the wallet. In short, it’s a nice first couch, and the perfect stand-in until you arrive at greener pastures.

Best Mid-Century Sofa

AllModern Remy Sofa

Very, very cheap furniture that looks decent and ships fast is Wayfair’s (the company at the wheel of AllModern) calling card. This sofa features a C-shaped body with a seat that seems to float on its own. Get this for its retro look and stay for the comfy seating.

Best Modern Sofa

Blu Dot Mono Sofa

Midwestern, modern, original furniture for prices that are not completely eye-watering. That is a special combination of attributes, and Blu Dot’s Mono sofa is possibly the sneakiest value the brand offers. For under two grand, you get a maple hardwood frame, down- and feather-filled cushions and pillows and, as always, a very pleasing shape.

Best Modular Sofa

Coddle Node Sofa

Most direct-to-consumer furniture brands opt for generic sofa designs that appeal to as many people as possible, hence the wealth of mid-century modern, boho and “traditional” sofas on this list and in showrooms. Coddle’s sofa is chunky and cozy-looking while maintaining a clean shape, making it something of an outlier in a very crowded category. Like other DTC brands, though, it comes with features like modularity, USB plugs built-in and stain-fighting fabric.

Best Leather Sofa

West Elm Urban Sofa

The hefty Urban sofa from West Elm is as family-friendly of a couch as you can get. The plush top-grain leather cushions and solid pine hardwood frame can withstand your kids’ wrestling matches and days-long The Wire binges alike. Plus, any spills can be wiped away somewhat with ease.

Best Faux Leather Sofa

George Oliver Bridgeview Sofa

This is a luxurious sofa without a luxury sofa price tag. The faux leather makes this great for vegans (and those on a budget), plus it just looks really good. Subtle touches like hand-stitched corded edges and a tufted seat make us wonder why this isn’t double the price — oh wait, it’s because it’s Wayfair.

Best Sleeper Sofa

Urban Outfitters Winslow Armless Sleeper Sofa

Urban Outfitters

Shoppers are sleeping on Urban Outfitters’ furniture. Take the Winslow, for example, with its armless design and dual function. The seating is plush, providing optimal cushioning for a sofa and offers enough support for a few nights sleeping on the couch.

Best Affordable Sleeper Sofa

Novogratz Collection Brittany Futon

This ridiculously cheap sofa probably won’t last a lifetime, but it’s the perfect stand-in until you get to upgrade. Oh, and what’s that? It converts into a bed? For under $300, this thing is a no-brainer.

Best Sectional

Allform Sectional

If you’re buying a non-modular sectional, then you’re furniture shopping wrong. Add seating if your household grows or change the orientation to conform to new living environments. Allform’s sofas are clean, classic and look similar to another recognizable direct-to-consumer brand.

Best Affordable Sectional

Casa Andrea Milano Velvet Sectional

If affordability, size and a more contemporary aesthetics are priorities, this extremely affordable three-seated with chaise is worth considering. Cushioned armrests, color options and 101 inches of napping space for under $500 isn’t a bad deal.

Best Customizable Sectional

Sabai The Essential Sectional

Sabai’s sectional, and its products in general, offers modern styles and sound construction at DTC prices. The chaise can be placed on either side of the sofa, so you can sleep perpendicular to whoever you want on whatever side you choose. It’s not the biggest sectional, but it’ll slot into the corner of small apartments nicely.

The BMW M5 Might Be About to Get Insane (But You May Not Like Why)

Come 2023, there should be a new generation of the BMW 5 Series hitting the streets — which of course means we’ll be getting a new generation of the iconic M5. Autocar has some reporting about what that new car may look like. According to the report, the new M5 will still offer a truly bonkers amount of power….but how it makes that power may be an even bigger departure from tradition than the current generation, which moved from rear- to all-wheel-drive and ditched the manual transmission.

The new 5 Series will allegedly use BMW’s CLAR architecture. It’s a transition platform before BMW converts to dedicated EV platforms in 2025, designed to give BMW maximum flexibility and the ability to produce combustion, hybrid and full-electric versions of the same car. (Though it hamstrings design a bit, as forcing EVs and combustion vehicles to use the same architecture makes it hard to take full advantage of the benefits of the former.)

Per Autocar, we can expect the new M5 to be a plug-in hybrid, employing the same powertrain as the upcoming X8 M. This would mean a twin-turbo V8 as the base engine with a 200 horsepower electric motor jacking up the power to 750 hp, which should help account for the extra weight. (That would be a different approach from Mercedes, which looks set to downsize its V8 engines, at least for a little while.) Targeted performance for the new M5 would be a sub-3.0 second 0-60 mph time and a top speed above 200 mph.

Incredibly, that M5 may not be the top-of-the-line model. The CLAR architecture can accommodate up to three electric motors, and Autocar suspects BMW could offer a tri-motor version of the all-electric i5 sedan that could put out 800 hp.

This new M5 would be a long way from the stick shift BMW M5 power sedans of yore. But as with the current model, any lingering purists will pipe down if it ends up being fun to drive.

The Ruma MIGMA Is A Luxury Catamaran With A Hydrogen Fuel Cell Propulsion System

A few weeks ago, we talked about how hydrogen-electric systems are facing an uphill battle against battery-electric technology. The key issue here is the lack of infrastructures such as limited refueling stations and the overall cost of producing the gas. Still, it’s not stopping forward-thinking companies from using it. To illustrate, we have the MIGMA concept from Ruma.

The Spanish design group presents a 180-foot watercraft with a hydrogen fuel cell system. This is not the first sustainable proposal we’ve seen, but it has been a while since we heard of something innovative like this.

From the renders, we’re looking at a sleek and futuristic vessel that does not skimp on luxury. This recreational twin-hull yacht flaunts elegant curves and sophisticated aesthetics inspired by nature. The fluid theme shows spaces flowing into one another seamlessly.

Ruma envisions interiors that provide 360-degree views with minimal obstructions. Thus, the MIGMA will use electrochromatic smart glass technology. The transparent surfaces allow natural light to flood in. When the need for a shade or privacy arises, the tint activates with a quick toggle of the settings.

RUMA says they can also configure some areas as meeting rooms for owners who want to conduct business while at sea. If you’re spending for something this grand, going for a bespoke trim is probably best.

The emission-free catamaran stores hydrogen in two tanks – one on each side. PEM fuel cells, electric motors, power electronics, and switchboards reside within the hulls.

Aside from the images, we’re still waiting for RUMA to share more details about it. So far, the MIGMA boasts a spacious deck, lavish accommodations for up to two families, cutting-edge controls, and eco-friendly propulsion.

The Best Instant Cameras That Embrace Nostalgia

Polaroid closed its last factory in 2008 and a little bit of everyone’s childhood died. In the past decade, however, a number of camera manufacturers, including Leica and Fujifilm, have designed their own takes on the instant camera; and in 2014, The Impossible Project rode that wave by purchasing Polaroid’s old machinery in order to continue to make the film for old Polaroid cameras — and, as of 2020, they are making new instant cameras, as well. Instagram and Snapchat have their place; the instant camera’s place is in your beach tote.

Polaroid Go

Polaroid Go

amazon.com

$337.26

Film: Polaroid Go Film
Cost per shot
: ~$1.25

Released in mid-2021, the Polaroid Go is the company’s smallest and lightest instant film camera. In fact, it’s so small that it can almost fit inside your pocket. The Go isn’t feature packed, but it still has a two-element lens that allows for autofocus (which you can trigger via a half-press on the shutter button) and flash. It uses a smaller type of film than any of Polaroid’s other instant cameras, but it’s still in its signature square shape.

Polaroid Now

Polaroid

Polaroid Now

amazon.com

$99.99

Film: i-Type and 600 film
Cost per shot
: ~$2

The Polaroid Now is essentially a bigger version of the Polaroid Go. It has many of the same features, including autofocus and flash, but it uses slightly larger film and thus produces a little larger photo. The other big difference is that because it’s a little bigger, the Now takes better photos when shooting in bright conditions; overexposure is a common problem for instant cameras, and the Now handles it better than most.

Polaroid OneStep+

Polaroid

Polaroid OneStep+

amazon.com

$139.99

Film: i-Type and 600 film
Cost per shot
: ~$2

Polaroid released the OneStep+ in 2018, but it still remains one of the coolest and best looking instant cameras you can buy. It’s neat for a few reasons. First, it has two different focus modes, one for close-up portraits and one for shooting subjects at a distant. Second, it has built-in Bluetooth and works with an app that enables a few shooting modes, including double exposures and a manual mode for photographers who want to control everything. Additionally, you can use the app as a remote shutter control, in case you want to be the photo as well.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 40

Fujifilm

Fujifilm Instax Mini 40

amazon.com

$94.99

Film: Instax Mini Instant Film
Cost per shot: ~$1

Released in 2021, the Mini 40 is the newest instant cameras in Fujifilm’s Instax line. It’s not so much different from the Mini 11 in terms of its shooting capabilities — it’s still a entry-level instant camera with focus, flash and a selfie mode— but its vintage black-and-white design with textured faux leather body makes it look like a classic.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 11

Courtesy

Fujifilm Instax Mini 11

amazon.com

$68.00

Film: Instax Mini Instant Film
Cost per shot: ~$1

Fujifilm released the Instax Mini 11 in 2020. It lacks the vintage look and feel of the Mini 40, but it has basically the same features and shooting capabilities. It has the same lens, shutter and flash. It has the same selfie mode. It even uses the same film, too. The big difference is that the Mini 11 comes in a more colorful finishes. And it’s more affordable by about $30.

Fujifilm Instax SQ1

Fujifilm

Fujifilm Instax Square SQ1

amazon.com

$119.95

$99.95 (17% off)

Film: Instax Square instant film
Cost per shot
: ~$1.15

Fujifilm released the Instax SQ1 and Instax Mini 11 around the same time in 2020. The biggest (and most obvious) difference is that the Instax SQ1 uses and prints 62mm square film (about 2.5 inches), where the Mini 11’s frames are only 42mm (about 1.8 inches) wide. Secondly, the Instax SQ1 has the battery life to shoot up 300 photos on a single charge, which is three times better than the Instax Mini 11 though film, and not battery life, is probably your limiting factor. The Instax SQ1 is quite a bit more expensive, and so is its film.

Kodak Smile

Kodak

Kodak Smile

Amazon

€83.99

Print paper: 2×3 Zink Photo Paper
Cost per print: ~$.50

The Kodak Smile is a digital instant film camera, which means you can take photos, they save to the camera, and then you can decide which ones you actually want printed later on. As such, it uses a special type of printer paper, as opposed to photographic film. There’s even a microSD slot in case you want to add more storage (up to 256GB extra). The camera is small enough to fit in your pocket and it slides shut to protect the lens from scratches. All in all, it’s a fun, pocketable and easy-to-use travel companion.

Mint InstantFlex TL70 2.0

Mint

Mint InstantFlex TL70 2.0

adorama.com

$389.00

Film: Instax Mini Instant Film
Cost per shot: ~$1

The InstantFlex TL70 2.0 is pretty incredible. Its twin-lens reflex design allows you to manually focus through the viewfinder — no other instant camera offers that functionality; you can set the shutter speed for long exposures, too. It uses the same film as the Fuji Instax Mini — $15 for a 20-pack — and runs on AA batteries (which feels a little dated, admittedly). Granted, you’d have to be really into instant cameras, or retro design, to spend nearly $400 on this.

Get The Ball Rolling With The Versatile Slinger Slingshot T-One Launcher

When you want to hone your skills in lawn tennis but can’t find a sparring partner, then the Slinger Slingshot T-One Launcher is there for you. It not only delivers incredible throws but also works great as a storage bag.  As a carrying solution, this one does a good job. It can transport up to 144 tennis balls, tennis rackets, and all else you want available on the playing field.

You can put all your tennis gear inside the large interior section accessible via the top of the bag. It also has a slide sling for an optional telescopic ball grabber. You might even squeeze in a pair of tennis shoes inside. Geared for this modern world, the Slinger Slingshot T-One Launcher even has a USB charging port in the upper right pocket where you can stash your phone and recharge via li-ion batteries that last up to 3.5 hours. An optional phone mount connects to the telescopic handle in case you want to film your game.

Meanwhile, the launcher part is fairly easy to use. There are two large zipper pockets on the front, one hides the firing mechanism and the other the ball hopper. Then on the side is a small zipper that holds the adjustment lever where you can adjust the angle with a few tweaks on the screw. The whole process operates via an on/off control with the convenience of a remote control too. It gives you the option between 10 and 45 mph for the launch speed.

Upon first glance, no one would think the Slinger Slingshot T-One Launcher hides a launching mechanism. It boasts such simple yet a smart and functional design that you can easily pack and roll with it. It weighs 15kgs but with the telescopic handle and the 360-degree wheels, bringing it along to the court becomes an easy feat.

The Terrain 365 Otter Slip-Joint Knife Is Rust-Free For Life

Pocketknives are essential everyday carry for those who often venture the outdoors. But when it comes to these small and useful tools, it’s better to stick to those that are comfortable in both land and water. This brings us to the Terrain 365 Otter Slip-Joint Knife.

Like its animal namesake, this pocket knife is equally at home in the water or land. That’s thanks to its Terravantium Dendritic Cobalt blade, which makes it guaranteed rust-proof for life. Dubbed as the most exotic knife blade material, it is also non-magnetic and makes for a sharp cutting tool. That’s because it forms a toothy edge that slices through any material easily even after it feels dull.

Making the Terrain 365 Otter Slip-Joint Knife even more adventure-ready is its titanium 6AL-4V titanium handles for a lightweight carry both in the hands and in the pocket. Plus, it uses 316 stainless steel dive watch grade hardware and martensitic stainless steel backing for even more durability.

Aesthetics-wise, this folding knife features a modern modified spear point blade and employs the classic Barlow slip joint inherent with traditional pocket knives, which is characterized by its oval handle and lengthened bolster. Then topped off with a matte finish and a lanyard bail to tether to a carabiner, keychain, or knotted lanyard.

The Terrain 365 Otter Slip-Joint Knife is quite handy for its size at an overall length of just 6.9 inches. The blade is 3 inches and not thick too at merely 0.115 inches and closes at 3.94 inches. Most of all, it is comfortable to use at just 3.1 ounces.

Off Grid Cabin: Anderson Architecture keeps it simple, stylish, and sustainable

Eco-friendly initiatives are getting more exciting over the years. With the automotive industry already confirming plans for full electrification down the line, it’s time others also step up. Some folks are taking matters into their own hands by designing their homes for sustainability. Anderson Architecture shares details about Off Grid Cabin and how they turned it into a green residence.

The structure stands on 8 acres of land of the Blue Mountains in Australia. Being this far from utility services, it’s impressive how the right team and modern technology can build something that manages to keep some creature comforts intact.

This remote retreat is perfect for people who want to take a break from city life. Exposure to traffic, noise, pollution, and not to mention the pandemic daily can be draining. So, kick back, relax, and let the soothing sounds of nature take over your senses when you’re at the Off Grid Cabin.

Anderson Architecture takes into consideration the hazards in the area. Bushfires and termite infestations are threats here which is why concrete becomes the go-to option. They’re also using low-carbon fiber cement board cladding and decking minimizing.

The Off Grid Cabin also features two interconnected sections facing opposite directions. A rain collection system fills a 30,000-liter rainwater storage. Then there’s the 6.8 kW solar PV system connected to a 27.6 kWh battery unit. Moreover, all sewage heads down to an organic worm farm septic system.

It’s simple, sustainable, and boasts a net-zero construction. With plenty of sunlight in the morning no need to turn on the lights until evening. Wake up to a panoramic view and breath all the fresh air. Working from home would be amazing in the Off Grid Cabin. Too bad we need to head out for groceries.

Adidas Promotes Sustainability With The No-Dye Collection Of Golf Footwear

In its quest for sustainability, Adidas has been making headway with the help of new manufacturing methods. Committed to a greener future, its efforts have led to a partnership with Parley for the Oceans. The goal here is to minimize unnecessary wastes and reduce carbon emissions. To promote this movement, we have the No-Dye Collection of golf footwear.

As long as you have no problems with gear in lighter shades, then Adidas has nailed the formula right here. As the name of the capsule suggests, the company intends to cut the water-intensive part of the production process. This refers to the pre-treatment phase textiles undergo before the dyes are applied.

For the No-Dye Collection, Adidas presents three of its silhouettes to promote the eco-friendly initiative. We have the ZG21 Motion, ZG21 Motion BOA, and Adicross ZX PRIMEBLUE. You’ll notice that the first two are the same model with different closure systems.

The ZG21 Motion and ZG21 Motion BOA cater to users who want to try out which one feels more comfortable on their feet. Meanwhile, the Adicross ZX PRIMEBLUE does away with the spikes in favor of Adidas’ Traxion outsole and signature Torsion bar to add power to your swings.

In keeping with its plans for minimal impact on the environment, Adidas is using 50% recycled content for the uppers of the No-Dye Collection. We can say that the natural colors of textiles look great with the Halo Mint elements for contrast.

“We’re continually evaluating ways to reduce our environmental impact when it comes to our products,” said Adidas Golf global director of footwear Masun Denison. “With this collection, we’re giving golfers another reason beyond just style and performance to feel good about the shoes they’re wearing.” The No-Dye Collection are available now.

Tesla Might Have (Another) Wild Idea for the Cybertruck

Tesla unveiled the Cybertruck back in December 2019, into what now feels like a different world. The Blade Runner homage of an electric truck was originally slated to arrive in late 2021; that said, though rumors suggested Tesla has still been tweaking the design and dimensions of the truck, and the company has officially (by Tesla standards) pushed production back to 2022 — a year where Tesla will also purportedly launch its new rocket-powered Roadster, build an electric Semi Truck and perhaps develop Level 5 autonomous driving.

Tesla engineers may be using the extra time to toy with some wild new ideas for the Cybertruck we haven’t seen yet. Roadshow recently uncovered a Tesla patent application for more intricate automotive glasswork. The technique would allow Tesla to form feature lines in glass rather than the standard curve automakers use. Drawings provided by Tesla show the technique being used at the edge of the Cybertruck’s windshield. They also depict the glass feature lines being used to form a glass dashboard on the interior — with the controversial yoke-style steering wheel.

tesla drawing

WIPO IP PORTAL

tesla drawing

WIPO IP PORTAL

Automakers patent all sorts of weird things. Ford patented a mobile circular conference room. Tesla itself has a patent for using lasers to clear debris off the windshield. So a patent on its own is no guarantee that a feature will make it to production. However, including feature lines for glass does feel like technology that could have a potential practical use — even if Tesla’s safety record and particular history with automotive glass would leave one mildly terrified.

Why 1983 Was Such a Milestone Year in Watches

Look back across the history of watches and you can identify certain inflection points: the birth of the modern sport watch in 1953, a crescendo of technologies in 1969 — and, in 1983, what many likely considered the manifestation of an industry’s decline. You might call it the Year of the Cheap, Plastic-Cased, Mass-Produced Quartz Watch.

While this certainly represented an era of crisis for some, hindsight paints it as an in-between time for culture and technology and as a necessary step toward the watch industry of today. In 1983: CDs were brand new, so people were still listening to Michael Jackson’s recent Thriller album on tape decks or record players; the first (pre-Super) Mario Bros. game debuted; NASA’s space shuttle Challenger launched; Seiko introduced the first TV watch — and the watch brands G-Shock and Swatch were born. No watches could’ve better represented the decade’s values and attitude.

The traditional mechanical watch industry had faced an inevitable wave of new technology already, so this was no sudden shock. Battery-powered electric watches were decades old, and quartz technology had followed, with Japan beating Switzerland in the race to bring the first quartz watch to market in 1969. Even Rolex was all-in for quartz.

gshock ad
Early stage of the G-shock prototyping process by Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe.

Hodinkee

At first, the often still-buggy technology was clearly superior in terms of accuracy, but it was cutting-edge and expensive. Quartz, however, would be groundbreaking in even more ways as the technology evolved: before long, it allowed watches to be slimmer than ever and its fewer moving parts made it more robust than mechanical movements with their intricate system of gears. But — and here’s the kicker — it also became extremely cheap to produce in great quantities. Finally, as ever more products were going plastic, a recipe emerged for a new era in watches.

Casio’s first watch to be cased in plastic (“resin”) debuted in 1978 — though Tissot had previously spent around 20 years developing a mechanical watch entirely produced in plastic, which it debuted in 1971. While many of the first quartz watches were produced in metal and even precious metals, the benefits of plastic were obvious and irresistible. Lightweight, incredibly affordable watches could be easily produced in any shape or color and in great volume — and, thanks to quartz, they were far more accurate than any watch in history.

Despite all these apparent benefits, they were immediately recognized as disposable — in contrast to traditional mechanical watches that were made to be regularly serviced, and even to last generations. But many people were simply happy to have a highly accurate watch for not much money — that they didn’t even have to worry about winding! Cheap, mostly digital watches from Japanese companies like Seiko, Citizen and Casio flooded the market and made Old-World watchmaking nearly obsolete.

The Swiss scrambled to respond to drastically falling sales, failing companies and even Japanese moves to buy the major Swiss watchmaking conglomerates. Rather than sell, the Swiss, led by Nicholas Hayek, merged their corporate groups (ASUAG and SSIH), in addition to creating a new company, Swatch.

Swatch was conceived to offer casual, fashion-focused, ultra affordable watches to compete with the Japanese. The concept was more than that, however, as these weren’t intended to replace higher-end traditional watches, but to supplement them as a “second watch,” the origin of the Swatch name. Further, they were meant to counter the popularity of digital watches with analog dials and Swiss identity.

Stay Tuned To Swatch

The brand debuted with a collection of 12 models and sold over a million units in their first year. They were priced between around $40 and $50 (40-50 CHF) — not far off from what many Swatch watches cost today. This strategy helped keep (some) Swiss companies solvent and making watches, and the corporate group would later (in 1998) change its name to the Swatch Group. It’s often credited for having “saved the Swiss watch industry.”

Whereas Swatch seemed to see consumers as wanting fun but disposable junk, Casio saw the potential of plastic and quartz: durability. The story of a Casio engineer‘s quest to create an indestructible watch after dropping a family heirloom and breaking it is legendary. The result was the Casio G-Shock line that debuted in 1983 and has today become almost a brand unto itself.

Although in recent years there have been more G-Shocks produced in steel, plastic’s ability to absorb impacts was a big part of what made the watches’ extreme durability possible. (See modern G-Shocks get beat up in creative ways here.) Quartz movements and digital displays also meant essentially no moving parts that could wear down with friction or be knocked loose by jolts.

Swatch and G-Shock are today each going strong and producing watches in seemingly endless colors and variations — they’re simultaneously at the forefront of modern street fashion as well as riding the retro style wave. But they are part of a more balanced watch industry that has room for fans of traditional watchmaking and those those that value a tough digital watch’s practicality, nostalgia and just plain fun. Who says you can’t love both?

This One-Off Montblanc 1858 Geosphere Pink Dial Unique Piece Is Heading To Auction

Most high-end watchmakers often keep the number of examples down for that air of exclusivity. These serialized models are what collector’s wait for and snap up once available. Then there are the one-offs that are highly sought-after for their bespoke sophistication. Montblanc is showing its support for breast cancer awareness by building the 1858 Geosphere Pink Dial Unique Piece.

The Hamburg, Germany-based luxury brand is participating in a charity auction along with the other prestigious names. We count timepieces from MB&F, Panerai, Bulgari, IWC, and Zenith who have respective entries for the Pink Dial Project initiative.

Hosting the event in October is Loupe This — a new bidding platform established by distinguished watch collector Eric Ku. Circling back to Montblanc’s 1858 Geosphere Pink Dial Unique Piece, we’re looking at a 42 mm titanium case in a coat of black DLC.

Also, the stealthy tone gets its contrast from the bright fuchsia pink of its dial. Depending on your viewing angle, the sunray finish creates a dynamic effect on the shade. Other striking elements include the two domed hemisphere globes, a secondary time zone sub-dial at 9 o’clock, and a date window at 3 o’clock.

Montblanc then gives the Arabic numeral hour markers, globes, bezel compass indications, a coat of blue Super-LumiNova. Meanwhile, the hands and rest of the indices are in green. Everything is running on the manufacturer’s MB 29.25 automatic calibre with a 42-hour power reserve.

The 1858 Geosphere Pink Dial Unique Piece caseback features a laser engraving of iconic Mont Blanc peak, a wind rose compass, and the Pink Dial Project badge. 100% of the proceeds from the auction go to charities based in Australia, Holland, Singapore, the US, Switzerland, and the UK.

British Designer Paul Smith Proposes A Radical Sustainable Design For The MINI Strip

Perhaps in a bid to appeal to more discerning clients, many automakers are collaborating with brands that don’t have anything to do with anything automotive. The practice might seem odd at first, but when you get something like the Paul Smith MINI Strip it all makes sense. This is a cool project between two brands promoting a greener future.

Instead of just reworking the MINI Strip for an electric powertrain, Smith is trying something different for this build. They’re starting off with a Cooper SE and taking it all apart. As strange as that sounds, it’s actually living up to the namesake here. This process even goes as far as the paint job.

This leave leaves us with an exterior that’s bare metal with only a thin transparent coat to protect it from the elements. Smith is going for an absolute minimalist aesthetic and the MINI is more than happy to oblige. With all components off, the next step is to identify which ones to omit yet still keep the vehicle functional.

“Maybe in the future, we’ll not need lots of gadgets in our car. If we added less and used recycled and recyclable materials, then it would create a more sustainable world,” says the British fashion designer. This is admittedly strange, but somehow fascinating when you really think about it.

The MINI Strip looks no different on the outside, but Smith reminds us of its eco-friendly nature. A view of the cabin shows an almost barebones theme. There’s mesh panels, recycled cork elements, climbing rope door pulls, and more. It even gets a transparent recycled Perspex roof for superior visibility. Now, this is one way to make a statement regarding sustainability.

The NERF LMTD Lineup Adds The Premium Aliens M41-A Pulse Blaster

With the Pentagon recently declassifying videos taken by the military showing pill-shaped UFOs, fascination surrounding extraterrestrials is surging once more. With the renewed interest in a subject we associate with science fiction, NERF’s timing is somewhat just perfect. We’re getting the Aliens M41-A Pulse Blaster – an instant must-have for fans of the movie.

For those who have yet to watch the films, we don’t want to spoil anything for you. However, we just want to point out that weapon it pays tribute to is as iconic as the xenomorphs in the franchise. The Aliens M41-A Pulse Blaster is marketed under the top-shelf NERF LMTD collection.

It’s impressive how the Hasbro-owned brand copies almost every detail from the original. The outline, the digital ammunition counter just below the receiver, and even the sound effects. NERF even equips it with a pump-action secondary blaster which mimics the grenade launcher on the rifle.

The Aliens M41-A Pulse Blaster measures approximately 28 inches and ships with premium packaging. You can choose to just keep it in the box as a display piece at home. Nevertheless, what’s the use of a NERF blaster when you can’t even enjoy its features in actual play.

Like most collectors, you can always grab more than one. Keep one in mint condition, display the other, and have fun with the rest. NERF is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Aliens film with this toy replica. According to the manufacturer, the colorway draws inspiration from the Power Loader. The Aliens M41-A Pulse Blaster ships with 10 Elite darts and 3 Mega darts.

Enjoy Full Ventilation With The Campo Designs Escape M4 Retractable Tent

No matter where your outdoor adventure takes you, camping tents are always the go-to shelter. They provide a roof over your head and a place to sleep in comfort and safety. But the Campo Designs Escape M4 is unlike any tent in the market because of its retractable domed canopy.

This camping gear gives you six different positions to customize according to your camping experience. If you want full ventilation or total exposure, then you can open the canopy halfway. You can also open it a little for just enough airflow. But for full privacy, especially at night during sleep, then you simply zip up close. But even when fully closed you get unparalleled temperature control because of built-in overhead netted ventilation.

As a prerequisite with any outdoor shelter, the Campo Designs Escape M4 is completely waterproof. It also has a bathtub groundsheet to keep you and your belongings safe and dry, a rainfly, and tape-sealed seams. Plus, the domed shape of the roof allows water to easily slide off the tent. But of course, when it’s open then you expose yourself to nature’s brunt.

Moreover, it boasts a huge interior space at 70 square feet. It is a large family camping tent and can sleep four adults. It can even fit a queen size inflatable mattress and still leave plenty of room on the sides. It also sets up fast given its components, in less than 10 minutes. It uses durable hybrid aluminum poles and a fiberglass exoskeleton. The Campo Designs Escape M4 weighs 22 pounds and comes with its own carrying backpack for easy transport.
