Spyderco Combines One of the World’s Strongest Locks with a Trending EDC Knife Tech

About a month ago, I predicted that button locks would be one of the biggest trends in the EDC knife industry this year. While I’m no Nostradamus, I may have been onto something.

With the release of the Spyderco Sage 6, one of the biggest, most respected brands in the everyday carry space has further solidified my prediction. Furthermore, it means one of the best locking mechanisms ever invented has gotten even better.

Push it real good

Spyderco’s Compression Lock is one of the best locks ever made — full stop. But the Sage 6 capitalizes on it in a way that makes it even more convenient and easy to use.

Functionally, the lock is still the same — combining the concepts of a liner lock and back lock to create one more formidable than either. However, adding a button release makes operating it as simple as, well, pushing a button.

While it was always possible to operate the Compression Lock one-handed, this makes it far more convenient. Users no longer have to shift their grip to claw at the mechanism awkwardly. Instead, give the button a little squeeze, and — bam! — the blade swings free.

This Seiko-Run GMT Dive Watch Punches Well Above Its Price

With the addition of a GMT hand, a 24-hour inner fixed bezel was added to the dial. The bezel is angled upwards, making the relatively smaller number and dash indices a little easier to see.

The hands, hour markers and 12 o’clock marker on the bezel are all coated in Super-LumiNova for exceptional visibility in limited light. Even when the watch is angled on the wrist, the dial markings and hands are still visible under the flat glass.

The Sector II has the same sunburst texture on the dial as the first generation in the green and orange options, but the navy blue dial features two slightly different shades on the inner and outer sections. The major update is that the inner circle is now slightly sunken in.

Availability and pricing

The Nodus Sector II Dive GMT looks and performs like it should cost well over $1,000. In general, the slimmer an automatic watch case is, the more expensive it is. But that is not the case here.

This Blade Went From Joke Meme to Fully-Fledged EDC Knife — and It’s Actually Great

Over the years, the EDC fanatics at Blade HQ have offered some silly, fun, exclusive knives. The most famous is probably the ongoing donut-themed Dessert Warrior series, but there have been others, namely the hot dog-inspired Weiner Warrior series.

Now, another goofy offering has joined their ranks. This pair of corn-inspired automatic knives, Böker’s KalashniCobs, have the same tongue-in-cheek spirit. However, they’re also solidly built, impressively detailed and worthy of inclusion in your EDC.

No joke

Way back in the summer of 2023, the internet became obsessed with a kid whose exuberance for corn knew no bounds. That original Recess Therapy video spawned seemingly endless parodies, songs and memes.

Even the folks at Blade HQ got in on the fun with a meme that transformed the starchy yellow vegetable into a pocket knife. The knife purveyors couldn’t have known the overwhelmingly positive response they were going to get.

Fast forward to today and that tongue-in-cheek joke has become a reality. More impressively, the corn-themed knife is actually legit, made real by none other than Böker, one of the best EDC brands in the biz.

Packable bags aren’t exactly a new product category. Over the years, several brands have built their entire reputations on their collapsible offerings, like Matador. So what sets Rimowa’s apart?

For starters, their design is exceptional, as is expected from a brand like Rimowa. Though minimalist in their appearance, the brand clearly took the bags’ lines and angles to heart during their creation.

But those exteriors only look good if they stay free of creases and wrinkles. The best feature is that both bags are built with “crease-resistant” polyester fabric, helping to keep them clean and smooth even after long periods of being packed away. As a bonus, polyester is also naturally water-resistant.

Unfortunately, Rimowa hasn’t shared specifically what that fabric entails. That said, I’m not sure we necessarily need to know the recipe for the secret sauce to appreciate it. Plus, they come with a two-year warranty if they don’t perform to your expectations.

This Super Steel EDC Flipper Knife Looks Ready to Slay Dragons

13 New Pocket Knives and Multi-Tools You Might Have Missed

This week, CJRB and Kizer releases pushed the envelope on form while Gerber and Woxna drops brought the function.

Halfway through February, the knife and multi-tool industry continues to produce a bumper crop of interesting releases.

This week was big for both US brands and Chinese ones, with notable news from Gerber, CRKT and The James Brand being matched or even bettered by eye-popping drops from CJRB, Kizer, Kansept and more.

The items below will update you on everything we’ve encountered over the past week.

Bestechman Guardian

This EDC knife delivers far more than it asks for. The unique blade shape — a combination of a clip-point and a Wharncliffe — offers a long slicing belly and a puncturing point, while the handle — layered G10 — is grippy and looks a lot like carbon fiber (but at a far lower price). It also doesn’t hurt that Bestechman offers it in eight different color combinations.

SOG Adventurer LB

This handy EDC knife takes the concepts behind some of the most classic, time-tested folding knives in history — the kind your dad and grandad might’ve carried in their younger years — and thoroughly modernizes it. However, even with some relatively budget-friendly materials, we’re not entirely sure how SOG manages to offer this knife at such a jaw-dropping low price.

CJRB Maximal

Designed by Knife Center’s own David C. Andersen, the Maximal is intended to be the affordable all-around EDC knife. It features a 2.95-inch drop-point blade made of Artisan Cutlery’s AR-RPM9 steel, a reliable crossbar lock, a deep-carry pocket clip and sturdy handle scales made of either G10 or Micarta.

CJRB Prototype Nanner

As unusual as it looks, the Prototype Nanner has the specs of a pretty respectable EDC knife. The 2.95-inch Persian-style blade is made of AR-RPM9 steel while the handle scales are G10. Deployed via thumbstuds, it pivots on a ceramic ball bearing and stays in place thanks to a Crossbar lock.

Kansept EDC Stiletto

Rising knife maker — and GP darling — Kansept has spun off an interesting little collection of EDC products. There are a couple of fidgety friends, a pair of pry bar/wrench gadgets and this fascinating 7.25 incher, which requires a bit of clever keying and screwing to deploy. The brand positions it as an “ice pick” and “a contemporary tool for design and artistic pursuits” but also makes reference to “misericordia” (Medieval Latin for mercy, compassion). Regardless, the 5Cr13 satin-finished stainless steel and titanium construction is a wonder to behold.

Kizer Silverwing

With its latest release, Kizer looks to the future of what the EDC world might hold. For the up-and-coming brand, that appears to include some pretty meticulous machining. While this front flipper boasts some truly magnificent materials — like M390 or S90V steel and titanium — its most unique feature is its robust-yet-lightweight handle scales, which took over four hours of meticulous machining to craft.

Gerber Stake Out Spark

Adding pliers, wire cutters and a ferro rod to the already popular Stake Out notably boosts the Stake Out Spark’s backcountry utility, as you can now use it for light wrenching, cable cutting and fire starting. While the scissors, tweezers and file are absent from this version, most key original features remain, including the tent stake puller (duh), bottle opener, ruler, blade and saw.

Vero Engineering Nova Mini

A pared-down version of Vero Engineering’s first MagnaCut folding knife, the brilliantly minimalist Nova Mini still has all the same details that made the original such a triumph. However, it’s a good deal smaller, cutting down the total length by just under 0.8 inches. It was a great knife before, but now it’s even better.

Ka-Bar Coytu Folder

Ka-Bar has significantly updated the knife formerly known as Coypu. Now called the Coytu, it boasts a 3.5-inch drop-point blade made of sturdy AUS 8A stainless steel, an ergonomic glass-filled nylon handle and a convenient, reliable crossbar lock. Bonus features include a seat belt cutter and glass breaker tip.

Cold Steel Frenzy II

With its sheepsfood blade and manual deployment, you might think the Frenzy II is a fairly traditional folder. However, the grippy G10 handle, Tri-Ad lock and 3V steel are all thoroughly modern. It’s a brilliant blend of old and new that helps this unique knife stand out among its peers.

Woxna Folding Saws

While folding saws aren’t exactly a new category, these ones capitalize on some technologies and mechanisms more typically found in EDC knives to make them more capable and user-friendly. Perhaps the most interesting feature is their button lock — a trendy mechanism that makes the saws safer and more innovative than others. The higher-end options also include Swedish-made stainless steel that’s more durable and easier to maintain.

The James Brand

CRKT A.P.C.

This modern interpretation of a classic slip joint boasts premium materials and thoughtful design. The 2.88-inch Böhler M390 steel blade is complemented by Fatcarbon Dark Matter handle scales. Meanwhile, the slip-joint mechanism uses the lock springs in the liners, leaving a bit more room for the blade in the frame and eliminating the protruding ledge that can make many slip joints a little tricky to get out of the pocket.

These Innovative Bushcraft Survival Tools Brilliantly Borrow from EDC Knife Design

Despite all their obvious similarities, outdoor cutting tools and EDC knives don’t have as much technological overlap as you might think. While pocket knives have largely evolved around convenience and style, outdoor tools remain more about simplicity and ruggedness.

Swedish up-and-comer brand Woxna looks to change that with its groundbreaking folding saws that borrow heavily from some surprising corners of the EDC world.

Everyday carry attributes

It needs to be said that the concept of packable saws isn’t exactly uncharted territory. Designs date back to at least the late 1800s, and many are readily available at outdoor retailers like REI. That said, there are a few things that Woxna is doing that outpaces just about all the others I’ve seen.

For starters, all four of their offerings are gorgeous in their designs. They’re also well-balanced and fold in on themselves just like EDC knives, helping make them exceptionally packable and easy to use, too.

But perhaps the most interesting thing, functionally speaking, is that they feature a button lock — a trend taking over the everyday carry world. With the blade extended, it operates the same as button locks in EDC knives: depress the button, and the blade can be folded.

A Beloved Tactical Brand Fixes the Biggest Problem with a Unique Folding Knife

Seven years ago, Cold Steel launched a surprisingly slender knife called the Frenzy II. However, a closer inspection of its specs told a different story.

The Kabutowari-inspired folder was massive, measuring 12.25 inches in length. Its handle alone was 6.75 inches, about the length of a slightly below-average EDC knife. It was, sadly, not something you could reasonably carry.

Fast-forward to today, and the brand has quietly dropped another version of that knife. However, this take on the Cold Steel Frenzy II is decidedly more approachable and EDC-friendly.

This version of the Frenzy II is over four inches shorter than its oversized predecessor.

Big ups for a downsize

While the original Frenzy II (itself a follow-up to the Frenzy I) was over a foot long, this new drop is much more practical at 8.0 inches. While that’s still on the larger side for an EDC knife, its overall slenderness helps it.

For the most part, the design hasn’t changed much. It even still retains a deep-carry pocket clip. (Yes, the original had a pocket clip for some reason — perhaps pack carry?)

An Underrated EDC Brand Minimizes One Of Its Best Titanium Knives Even Further

Despite winning multiple awards at last year’s Blade Show Texas, Vero Engineering is still a relatively unknown knifemaking brand. Part of me appreciates that I’m in the know, but another part wants to shout from the rooftops about how great this brand’s knives are.

But maybe I don’t have to shout too loud, so long as the brand keeps dropping knives like the Vero Engineering Nova Mini. This exceptional cutting tool reimagines one of Vero’s best designs, making it even more carry-friendly.

The Nova Mini retains the original’s iconic, minimalist styling but puts it in a more EDC-friendly package.

Even less to love (and that’s a good thing)

The original Nova was founder Joseph Vero’s very first design to feature a MagnaCut super steel blade. As is often the case with Vero Engineering’s offerings, the design lets the materials do the talking.

Like its predecessor, the Nova Mini continues that tradition. It’s just as minimalist, opting for sleek lines over boisterous stylistic flair. The chief difference is that the Nova Mini is a good deal smaller.

Whereas the original was 8.29 inches with a 3.65-inch blade, the Mini is only 7.5 inches with a 3.25-inch blade. While an under-0.8-inch difference might not seem like much, it’s a huge difference in EDC and ergonomic terms.

Hoka’s New Daily Sneaker Is Almost Too Technical for City Life

At face value, the only trade-off between the two pairs of shoes (beyond the cobranding, of course) is the lack of speed laces on the new Mafate Speed 4 Lite. That said, the shoe’s traditional laces may make it more accommodating to wider feet.

Pricing and availability

The Mafate Speed 4 Lite has yet to appear on Hoka’s website, however, the shoe is scheduled for a wide release sometime in February.

When it does arrive, it will retail for $180 and come in four colorways: burgundy-brown, black, bright green and purple.

I think bronze is a natural fit for the Terra Nova collection, as it perfectly meshes with the field watches’ unique neo-vintage styling. Patagonia Brings Old-School Hiking Pack Style to the EDC Bag World

It’s no secret that Patagonia is huge in the outdoor industry. Hikers, climbers, campers, kayakers, skiers, runners, mountaineers and others all use (and love) the brand’s apparel and equipment.

While the gorpcore movement has seen a lot of that gear make it into the world of streetwear and everyday carry, most of that has been unintentional. However, this latest release, Patagonia’s Fieldsmith packs, sees the brand intentionally take some of its best outdoor features and purposefully imbue them into the world of EDC.

Rucksacks a plenty

The Fieldcraft collection includes four bags in total. Three of them are rucksack-inspired backpacks — 24L, 28L and 32L — and the fourth is a smaller, more discreet hip pack (or a crossbody bag if you prefer).

Technically, this isn’t the first time Patagonia has released a Fieldcraft collection. However, previous versions of these bags have all been discontinued. Furthermore, the style has changed a lot.

Whereas the older Fieldcraft bags look similar to those offered by other brands favored by the gorpcore crowd (like Fjallraven), these new ones are more unique and refined.

Seiko’s Stealthiest Watch Ever Was Designed for Literal Ninjas

Seiko recently completed its second Incredibly Specialized Watch Exhibition, where the Japanese watchmaker sets its designers loose to create, um, incredibly specialized watches.

What is an incredibly specialized watch, you may be wondering? Well, it’s exactly what it sounds like: a tool watch made for a ridiculously specific purpose.

The watches are concepts, not actual products, so the designers don’t really need to consider any practical limitations in their designs. As a result, this year’s event resulted in watches designed for Santa Claus, vampires and more.

Some of the designs are pretty out there, but one of the more realistic creations — and arguably the coolest — is a Seiko watch designed for real-life ninjas.

While mostly recognized in Western society thanks to their prevalence in pop culture, ninjas did really exist in feudal Japan, where they acted as spies and assassins. Just like their fictional counterparts, these real-life ninjas operated in the shadows and relied on their stealthiness to conduct their covert missions.

Ninjas are associated with equipment such as shuriken (throwing stars) and katana blades, but watches were not among their arsenal — mainly because they didn’t exist yet. There are myriad ways in which ninjas were believed to have told time, from reading a cat’s eyes to monitoring the width of their nostrils to letting the stars be their guide.

Is Rolex Shutting Down Its Oldest Watch Brand?

Rolex made headlines in 2023 when the brand acquired Bucherer, which at the time was the world’s largest retailer of Rolex watches. The move, coupled with the subsequent launch of Rolex’s certified pre-owned program, signaled that the brand was looking to exert more control and influence over its market.

But there was another aspect of Rolex’s Bucherer acquisition that was a bit more mysterious: luxury watch brand Carl F. Bucherer was included in the sale.

It was initially unclear what plans Rolex had for CFB, though the Crown claimed at the time of the sale that its new sub-brand would continue to operate independently. Still, the idea of Rolex building a portfolio of brands with CFB alongside Tudor was tantalizing. I even predicted that Rolex’s ownership would lead to widespread renewed interest in the 137-year-old brand.

But it looks like I was (very) wrong, as new reporting indicates that Rolex has decided to shut down Carl F. Bucherer entirely.

So long, Carl?

Carl F. Bucherer was founded in 1888. That means the brand is not only older than Tudor but also Rolex, which has only been around since 1905. As such, CFB was easily the oldest brand under The Crown’s corporate umbrella.

The brand manufactures its own movements and uses some unique proprietary technologies. Most notable is its peripheral rotor system which rotates around the perimeter of the movement on a ball bearing, thus eliminating the need for the rotor to attach to a bridge or mainplate.

This Crazy-Affordable EDC Knife Blends Classic Features with Modern Materials

Long before crossbar, button, frame or even liner locks were used on EDC knives, one mechanism prevailed: the back lock. This device is so ingenious and reliable that it’s still employed today, usually on more traditional knives (like Buck’s 110 Folding Hunter).

Back to the future

If you look solely at the Adventurer LB’s mechanisms, you’ll find it largely traditional. As mentioned, the back lock is one of the oldest locking mechanisms in the EDC world. But it also has a manual deployment — meaning there’s no flipper or assisted opening mechanism.

While the blade’s thumb studs are on the more modern side of the spectrum — as opposed to a fuller or nail nick — they’re also not particularly novel. The same goes for the blade shape; drop points are now an old standard.

If we were to expound on the specs based on that knowledge alone, we’d expect a handle made of wood, bone or even leather and perhaps a time-tested blade steel like 440, which dates back to the 1920s.

You Can Stop Looking, I Already Found Spring’s Coolest Chore Coat

Most chore coats stick pretty closely to the design originally worn by French railway workers. However, a Texas boot company just proved that there is still plenty of play in the century-old design.
