What to Consider

A lesson on TV tech geek-speak is a good place to start before you shop, as there’s a mound of jargon to wade through, and a thorough understanding will help inform your buying decision. 4K, also known as ultra-high-definition (UHD), has four times the pixels of, say, an older HD 1080p TV. 8K TVs have four times the pixels of 4K, but they’re extremely pricey, plus there isn’t a ton of content out there for them. Most 4K TVs have HDR — or high dynamic range — which translates to superior contrast.

You’ll also see OLED (organic light-emitting diode) and QLED (quantum dot LED) TVs on the market. Without getting too far into the weeds, the latter is essentially a souped-up LED TV, and the former skips the LED backlight in favor of light emitted from millions of individual pixels, which is a newer technology.

Some brands support OLED and others QLED, and there are pros and cons to each depending on your TV viewing preferences (are you a gamer or a cinephile?) when it comes to contrast, color, viewing angles and brightness.

How We Chose

All the TVs below — in addition to being on sale at the time of this writing — have average customer ratings of four stars or more. We read through scores of user reviews, dug into our own research, and consulted expert sources including Tom’s Guide, Popular Mechanics and Wirecutter. In our selection, we include TVs across multiple price points, from budget sets that deliver solid viewing experiences despite lacking 4K, to super-high-end 8K options that’ll set you back several thousand dollars. As mentioned above, there are a slew of features to consider, and we highlight the most essential for every TV we cover. Keep in mind that prices are accurate at the time of this writing, but may change as you shop.

One of The James Brand’s Boldest Knives Just Got a New Look

From the jump, we’ve been big fans of The James Brand’s limited forays into the fixed-blade space. Long celebrated for its smart collection of folding pocket knives and EDC paraphernalia, the brand released its first fixed blade two years ago — and we promptly named the 7.8-inch Hell Gap one of the best outdoor products of 2019.

The James Brand followed that outdoor chef’s dream up the following year with an even bigger knife, the 10-inch Hell’s Canyon. In addition to the entire knife being longer, the blade itself is noticeably more substantial than the Hell Gap’s, a whopping 5.4 inches versus 3.8. Created with input from Top Chef Masters winner Chris Cosentino, it’s sharp and sturdy enough to slice and dice pretty much any food you encounter around the campsite — and look damn good doing it.

Now, as the title of this story indicates, that larger-than-life knife is getting a noteworthy new look, courtesy of Huckberry. Offered exclusively through the beloved retailer is a special edition featuring a Rosewood handle. For those who embrace more rustic aesthetics when heading into the backcountry, this treatment represents a seamless fit.

Even with the revamp, the knife retains its best original quality too: Crucible s35vn blade steel boasting excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance. It also comes with a lanyard and a molded Kydex sheath, because a knife this special deserves the utmost respect and care.

14 Slides to Wear This Summer

When it comes to summer footwear, think breathable and lightweight. There’s no shortage of feathery light canvas sneakers to choose from, but we also love the simplicity of a pair of slides. They’re backless like mules but open-toe like flip-flops. Slides usually have one or two straps that span across the toes and forefoot, though there are some unique variations. The style dates back to Ancient Greece and Egypt, when they were made from papyrus, twigs and various types of leaves. Slides evolved as shoemakers eventually started making them from stronger materials like leather and the style became popular in women’s fashion after WWII.

The casual slides as many know them today first appeared in 1960s when Birkenstock introduced its Madrid shoe and Adidas introduced its famous Adilette slide, a waterproof shoe designed for a German football team to use in the locker room. The slide has become more popular in recently in athleisure, streetwear and gorpcore, often with socks to match. And while you could slip into a pair poolside, the summery shoe can go anywhere. Nearly every brand has riffed on the style, applying chunky soles, futuristic materials and high-end leathers into the style. Regardless of the slide you’re going for, it’s a perfect sandal to get into for summer. Here are some picks to choose from.

The Volvo Wagon of the Future May Look a Lot Like This

Big changes are coming at Volvo. We know this because the brand has pledged to go all-electric by 2030, yet currently, here in 2021, the XC40 Recharge is the only pure-electric Volvo-branded vehicle one can buy in a dealership. (The C40 Recharge is available online.) So…Volvo will need a bunch of new cars.

We know a bit about what changes are coming. Volvo SUVs make up around 75 percent of sales. So the next generation will be more SUV-centric, paring back the traditional sedan and wagon lineup. And now, Volvo has offered us a glimpse of what that change will look like with the Concept Recharge, which looks a bit like a V60 Cross Country from the future.

Unlike the current Volvo electric cars, the new EVs will use a dedicated EV architecture. And like other EVs running on those platforms, Volvos will get a longer wheelbase with shorter overhangs and flat floors to maximize interior space. Concept Recharge employs a lower hood for better sightlines and aerodynamics. There’s a LIDAR sensor at the front of the roof.

Volvo says it will continue using its Scandinavian minimalism design aesthetic, which has produced some of the best car interiors around, and incorporate sustainable materials.

How will Volvo resolve the great EV grille conundrum (electric cars don’t need grilles but look weird without them)? The space where the grille on a combustion car would be will have a “shield-like structure” with a diagonal bar and logo as a nod to the original design.

When will Volvo begin including these changes? Potentially as soon as next year. Separate Volvo releases about bringing software development in-house and using real-time data from vehicles for safety updates reference the technologies debuting on a new vehicle arriving next year, which will likely be Volvo’s new fully-electric XC100 flagship SUV.

Sorry, But You Can’t Have Tudor’s Coolest New Watch

Every two years, the world’s dedicated watch nerds hold their collective breath in anticipation of a bunch of special, one-off watches that they can’t buy. Only Watch, a special auction whose proceeds fund research into muscular dystrophy, brings together some of the biggest players in the horological landscape in service of the greater good. Each company makes a special piece unique to be auctioned off at the Only Watch event, and the resulting watches are invariably some of the coolest pieces of the year.

Many of these watches are merely special variations of existing models, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t dope as hell. Take Tudor’s Black Bay GMT One, for example: it’s the same BB GMT that we all know and love, but done up in…well, I don’t know what. Tudor says it’s a “secret stainless steel aging technique.” It sort of looks like a BB GMT that was dug up under a ziggurat in the year 3200 by some alien archaeologist. Whatever it is, it’s cool.

tudor

Tudor

The bracelet was treated to match, and even the movement was treated: “the bridges and mainplate were coated in black before being aged by barrel tumbling.” It’s also a Master Chronometer, meaning it’s anti-magnetic to 15,000 gauss and accurate to within, in this case, +/- 5 seconds per day.

So how much does this special Black Bay GMT cost? No one can know yet, remember?! It’s gonna be auctioned off to the highest bidder on November 6th, 2021, and the proceeds will fund muscular dystrophy research. See — something good can come from all this crazed watch collecting.

Enjoy Chilled Drinks With The Sea Stones Cool Coaster Set

There’s nothing like perfectly chilled spirits to unwind with after a long day at work or during get-togethers with friends. Using ice is normally the way to go. But for those who prefer their drink smooth and undiluted, then chilling stones work wonders like those offered from the Sea Stones Cool Coaster Set.

The set uses rock-solid granite for both coasters and stones, which come in pairs, and two glass tumblers. The 4″ square coasters have thick cork liners to contain condensation and fitted with soft bottoms to prevent table scratches. They have perfectly bored holes with deep recesses to fit each 8oz glass tumbler securely in place. This ensures no tips thus no spills while the drink is on the table or while serving spirits as the glasses fit precisely inside the holes.

Moreover, no two coasters are the same as each granite color varies naturally. This allows you to easily identify your drink from the other. Both coasters and granite chilling stones from the Sea Stones Cool Coaster Set keep spirits at the optimal sipping temperature.

Best of all, the handmade set comes at a compact size so it takes minimal space in your freezer and table. Easily store coasters and chilling stones in the freezer so you have them ready to chill your Johnnie Walker or any whiskey, gin, scotch, and other spirits both on the rocks. The Sea Stones Cool Coaster Set is handmade in New Hampshire and made from reclaimed granite and the tumblers from recycled glass.

The New, Affordable Way to Play Vinyl on Your Sonos System

Welcome to Product Support, a column devoted to helping you get the most out of the gadgets and software you already use.

Up until recently, the way to play vinyl records on your Sonos speakers was to buy the very expensive Five ($499) (or its older brother, the now-antiquated Play:5), which are the only Sonos speakers with a line-in connection you could plug a turntable into. That, or you could connect the turntable to the Port ($449), Sonos’s wireless streaming amp, as well.

Now that Sonos has released the Roam ($169), its newest (and tiniest) portable speaker, there’s a more affordable way to play vinyl on your Sonos speakers. You can pair it with a Bluetooth turntable — aka a turntable that has an integrated Bluetooth transmitter or “built-in Bluetooth” — which is actually a pretty common for a lot of entry-level turntables. From there, the Roam can share the sound with the rest of your Sonos system.

How to connect the Roam to a Bluetooth turntable

Connecting the Roam (or any Bluetooth speaker) to a Bluetooth turntable is slightly tricky because you can’t use your smartphone or an app as a bridge. You need to put both the Roam and the Bluetooth turntable into a pairing mode, place then next to each other, and then should automatically pair.

Tucker Bowe

Sonos Roam

sonos.com

$169.00

Putting the Sonos Roam into a Bluetooth pairing mode is simple. Press and hold the button on the back until you hear a second tone (the first tone should sound right when you first press the button) and then release the button. The status LED on the front of the speaker will start flashing blue. To initiate a pairing mode on your Bluetooth turntable, you will likely just have to press (and hold) a Bluetooth button; the exact pairing process will depend on the specific model of Bluetooth turntable that you’re using — so check you user manual if you don’t know how!

So, in short:

  1. Place the Bluetooth turntable and Roam next to each other.
  2. Initiate Bluetooth pairing on the Roam (instructions above).
  3. Initiate Bluetooth pairing on your turntable (depends on model).
  4. Roam is paired when you hear a chime and its LED light turns solid blue.
    1. After the Roam and Bluetooth turntable are connected, play a record and make sure that the sound is coming out of the speaker. Even though Bluetooth technology has gotten pretty good these days, we still recommend keeping the Roam and turntable within about 30-feet of each other to prevent severing the connection.

Once the vinyl audio is playing out of the Roam, you simply need to group the Roam with your other Sonos speakers in your home: open the Sonos app, select the System tab (bottom center), and group the Roam with you other Sonos speakers. Audio will then play on all your Sonos speakers at once!

Can you connect a Bluetooth turntable to the Sonos Move?

Unfortunately no. Sonos makes two different portable speakers that have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities — the 2019-released Move and the 2021-released Roam — but they don’t work exactly the same. While you’ll be able to connect the Move to a Bluetooth turntable and play audio, you won’t be then able to group the Move with your other Sonos speakers (Wi-Fi-only) so that the vinyl audio is playing in a multi-room system. This is a feature that is exclusive to the Roam.

The reason for this is that Sonos integrated the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi antennas differently in the Move and Roam. Specifically, the two antennas are separate in the Move and combined in the Roam. This helps the Roam switch between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modes much more seamlessly than the Move, and thus gives it the ability to play Bluetooth audio on other Wi-Fi-only speakers. You simply have to group the Roam with other Sonos speakers while its playing your turntable’s audio.

2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet Road Test Review | The supercar as defined by the 911

If you can afford a supercar, do you want it to be a Porsche 911? That’s the question you ask yourself when considering the merits of the 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet. Do you want one of the highest evolutions of the 911 as opposed to a loaded Audi R8, Lamborghini Huracan Evo or something else exotic? It’s a lot for the fortunate to consider.

Short of the race-bred GT3 line, the Turbos are as much Porsche 911 as anyone could ever desire. As one of my colleagues notes, the Turbos themselves are basically racecars, though he only tested the “regular” Turbo. I spent a week blasting around town top down (mostly) in the Turbo S. With 640 hp and a sprint to 60 time of 2.7 seconds, it’s the variant you simply can’t catch.

The high performance efficacy of the Turbo S comes from the 3.7-liter boxer six-cylinder, which produces a stunning 60 hp more than the previous generation. Torque is up 37 lb-ft to 590, helping the S shave 0.2 seconds off its 60-mph run. The Cabriolet is only a tenth slower. They both have top speeds of 205 mph. Additionally, Porsche’s Traction Management All-Wheel Drive system can send 368 lb-ft to the front wheels, depending on conditions.

The unit is part of a new family of Porsche engines, and it has a new air intake system, larger intercoolers and larger symmetrical turbochargers than found in the old Turbo S. The intercoolers were moved from the rear fenders to right behind the engine to increase cooling 13%. The air filters are now in the fenders and there are two more air vents underneath the deck wing. The direct-injection system has Piezo injectors, which Porsche says increase output and responsiveness. The engine’s bones are found in the 3.0-liter 911 and a lesser-powered version is under the hood of the 911 Turbo (572 hp, 554 lb-ft). The Turbo S powerplant teams with the eight-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission, and the lofty top speed is reached in sixth gear.

The 2021 Turbo S features evolutionary new looks based on functionality. There’s a new rear wing, new front end and LED matrix-style headlights. The Turbo S isn’t a dramatic departure from its predecessor, but it’s 1.65 inches wider up front and 0.39 inches wider in back, with wider tires and front air vents, creating a more defined stance.

The Turbo S is now considerably more capable, and its looks reflect those chops. Still, our test car casts a subtle vibe, clad in Gentian Blue Metallic paint with a black cloth roof. The forged center-lock black wheels (20 inches in front, 21 in rear) have a polished gray 10-spoke design, and even the brake calipers are polished black, lending an understated feel to the aesthetic. Similarly, the truffle brown leather interior with chalk-colored stitching has a mellow feel with patterns that Porsche says recall the 930 Turbo. The optional Burmeister sound system ($3,980) with silver speaker covers accents the cabin and produces a dulcet sound.

Driving the Turbo S Cabrio is a mix of emotional and mechanical impulses. Porsches demand and reciprocate precision through engagement, and the steering immediately communicates a sense of the car’s exacting nature. Same with the brakes, which are carbon ceramic composite and 0.39 inches larger than the previous model. Rear-axle steering and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control are standard. The Porsche Active Suspension Management ($1,510 option) lowers ride height 0.39 inches and is offered as a factory option for the first time with improved shock absorbers and software calibrated for the Turbo S that adjusts damping continuously — allowing the car to be sportier and more comfortable. Our model also has the optional front axle lift feature that can raise the front of the car 1.6 inches and adds $2,770 to the sticker.

The Turbo S offers a formidable array of performance tools. Everything has its purpose, logically added for an assigned task. The emotions are stirred when these tools are put into use. Twisting the steering wheel drive mode selector to Sport, we enter a winding road lined with the summer’s complement of greenery. The exhaust grows louder, angrier, throatier. It already barks at shift points in the Normal setting, but Sport has the effect of poking the Turbo S with something sharp. This car has the Sport exhaust, a $3,490-option that’s worth it. Porsches, Jaguars, Ferraris and a few select Corvettes and Mustangs summon this kind of pulse-quickening sound that few others can match. Simply lifting off the throttle or downshifting produces a growl or a pop that’s better than some sports cars make at full roar.

Pausing under an overpass, the top comes down in seconds. Launching hard, we’re pulled back in our seats as we weave through the twists and turns leading through to Woodward Avenue. A hard right turn onto M-1 and we’re heading north. The sun breaks through and the temperatures sit around 65 degrees making this an idyllic summer day with echoes of fall. It’s cool for late June, but perfect convertible weather.

When caught in a downpour, Wet Mode detects water on the road and tunes the stability control and anti-lock brakes accordingly. Stating the obvious, the 911 then warns us to drive cautiously, which is appreciated. Plodding around town we notice the little things the car offers. The leather-covered steering wheel is large, fairly thin and has grips at 10 and 2 o’clock. The infotainment system is simple enough to use; contemporary and customizable but not too layered. In total, the 911 provides a flexible experience. For instance, you can drive in Normal or Wet and still turn on the Sport exhaust via a button or touchscreen. We drove in Normal with the exhaust pipes up — and Sport with the spoiler down, just to try different things. Obviously, it’s enjoyable to play around, but it’s logical to want to keep the Turbo S performance at heel yet still announce your arrival with an exhaust note.

With the brown leather, sport exhaust, fancy speakers and a few other options, our test model stickers for $234,570, including destination and a $1,000 gas-guzzler tax. As noted in our 911 Turbo review, the 911 is already more car than you’ll ever need. Perhaps that’s the smart play, as the additional power isn’t necessary and the performance increases the S brings to the table are too small for mere mortals to notice.

Enthusiasts with this kind of buying power often stop thinking metrically around $100,000. It becomes an object of uber prestige. They want the car because it’s the most expensive and the most powerful. Assuming the GT3 is simply too raw, this is the Porsche 911 in its highest form and you’re approaching future collector status. It’s living in the moment and investing in the future, and using that logic, there’s simply no substitute for the Turbo S. The convertible? Well that just makes it even more fun in the summer.

What’s Next for the Ford Bronco? Here’s What We Know

      ford bronco badge 2021

After many, many years of decline and neglect, as the third decade of the 21st Century spawned, Ford revived the Bronco lineage as a new sub-brand. We’ve sampled the Bronco Sport crossover — which is great. We just drove the big boy Bronco SUV, which is outstanding. But those strong debuts beg the question: what comes next for the Bronco brand?

The Ford Motor Company seldom comments on future products (unless the CEO decides to chime in on Twitter), and it can be difficult to project too far forward in an automotive future that could include Level 4 autonomous driving, EVs powered by solid-state batteries and actual flying cars by the end of this decade. But with reason and previous reporting, we can offer some conjecture on how the Bronco brand will move forward in three main areas: fuel economy, performance and body styles.

The Ford Bronco should go electric soon

Pretty much every reviewer has loved driving the 2021 Bronco…but we all drove it with the backdrop of climate change-fueled record heat waves engulfing much of the country. And Ford did not put its green foot forward with its new SUV; you can get 21 mpg combined with a Ford Bronco, with a 2.3-liter and no off-road mods , but start dabbling with the Badlands trim and Sasquatch packages, and you’re looking at a dip to 17 or 18 mpg combined. The Bronco is less efficient than the Jeep Wrangler, and only slightly better than the Toyota 4Runner, which went into production in 2009.

Expect Ford to rectify Bronco fuel economy soon with a hybrid powertrain. Ford CEOs have referenced building a hybrid Bronco. Bronco leaks have shown both an EV coaching mode in the Bronco OS and a section about treating hybrid batteries in the Bronco owner’s manual. A hybrid is a competitive necessity, with Jeep already having a 4xe PHEV at dealerships and Toyota committed to building a hybrid 4Runner. Ford doesn’t have major technical hurdles to take the Bronco hybrid; those components are already present in other vehicles. Indeed, some form of hybrid Bronco could arrive as soon as next year.

An electric Bronco will likely happen as well, but it will take a bit longer. Ford has said it will create a dedicated EV platform that can support off-road SUVs, with the announcement all but confirming it will be used for a Bronco. And Ford CEO Jim Farley all but confirmed a Bronco EV was coming on Twitter. But a dedicated EV platform will take years to develop, and, as of right now, there isn’t much incentive to rush one to market. Toyota has lagged behind on EV development; meanwhile, Jeep’s Magneto concept — literally a two-door Rubicon stuffed with batteries instead of a gas engine — showed how far off an EV Wrangler is from production.

Expect a Ford Bronco Raptor to arrive soon…ish

Jeep knew the Ford Bronco was coming and planned accordingly — and deviously. In the interim since Ford debuted the Bronco, Jeep has dropped both the Hemi V8-powered Wrangler Rubicon 392 and the plug-in hybrid 4xe. Both have more power and torque than any Bronco, and both arrived in dealerships before the Bronco.

Jeep also announced the Xtreme Recon package for the Wrangler, which nudges it just above every Bronco “best-in-class” spec. Seriously: the Bronco can ford 33.5 inches of water; Xtreme Recon brings the Wrangler rating up to 33.6 inches. You never know when that extra 0.1 inch of water-fording capability will prove critical, right?

      Ford

Ford, presumably, should produce a Bronco-branded retort. Ford itself released a testing photo from last September showing an airborne Bronco with more articulation than the current spec; that vehicle will likely be called the Bronco Raptor, rather than the Warthog as originally planned (and as Halo fans hoped). And with the Bronco’s history of winning the Baja 1000, a desert-racer version could not be a more natural fit. A Ford engineer fleshing out his LinkedIn profile with his projects noted that the Bronco Raptor would arrive for 2023.

Rumors have focused on Ford’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 for the Bronco powertrain. This engine puts out 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque in the Explorer ST and 494 hp and 630 lb-ft in the hybrid Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring. Judging from Ford’s F-150 Raptor and the Ranger Raptor sold abroad, some high-performance racing shocks are a good bet for the Bronco Raptor as well.

      Expect More Bronco Vehicles

Ford has explicitly marked the Bronco as a family of vehicles. That naturally implies that, with the success of the Bronco and Bronco Sport, Ford is not finished adding more Bronco-branded vehicles. The natural route to go is a Bronco-branded adventure pickup to go after the Jeep Gladiator. The first-gen Bronco had a pickup variant. Bronco capability plus the added utility of a truck bed should be a no-brainer.

      Ford

According to Automobile, a Bronco pickup truck is happening in mid-2024 for the 2025 model year (but coming potentially sooner). It will be four-door only with the same powertrain and transmission options as the current Bronco, as well as the same G.O.A.T. modes and the Sasquatch package.

Another option down the road — and this is speculation on our part — could be a Bronco-branded three-row SUV. Jeep has opted not to go for three rows so far with the Wrangler —but they are going all-in on three-row SUVs elsewhere. Land Rover reportedly has a three-row Defender 130 in the works. Toyota, meanwhile, could have a new and more affordable three-row off-roader replacement for the Land Cruiser coming based on the Tundra.

A strong majority — around 75 percent — of Bronco buyers are new to Ford. Winning over buyers is great. But it also means those buyers may be Bronco buyers, not necessarily loyal Ford buyers. Families who outgrow their four-door Bronco aren’t automatically jumping to a three-row Explorer or an Expedition. A three-row Bronco may become necessary to keep buyers from straying.

Hit Your Summer Fitness Goals with This Smart Scale

Stepping on the scale could hardly be described as an enjoyable experience for anyone — but with the Dara Smart Scale from FitTrack, you might find the task a little less daunting. This high-tech scale helps you better understand your body metrics so that you can work to improve them and reach your fitness goals a lot faster. How does it work? When standing on the scale, a very low, safe electrical signal is sent from four metal electrodes through your feet. The electrical signal passes quickly through water that is present in hydrated muscle tissue but meets resistance when it hits fat tissue. This resistance is measured and input into scientifically validated FitTrack equations to calculate your body composition measurements. With the ability to measure 17 different vital body health metrics, the Dara scale provides insights far above the current scale you’re working with. Plus, with an athlete mode for active users, you can take your fitness to the next level this summer.

Nikon Z fc Blends Classic Looks with Today’s Tech

The latest addition to Nikon’s compact mirrorless lineup is the Z fc, which, if the aesthetics don’t make it obvious enough, stands for “film camera.” Oddly, it happens to capture your images on a 20.9-megapixel APS-C sensor, not film. Digital not chemical! The nostalgic design also extends to its manual control set. An ISO range is 100-51,200, so yeah, a bit more dynamic than film, too. And it’s not just for stills, the fc captures 4K motion at up to 30fps and it’s compatible with all Nikon’s DX/APS-C lenses.
