An Iconic Tarantino Muscle Car Just Resurfaced In a Surprising Way

From Steve McQueen’s Ford Mustang GT in Bullitt to Shia LaBeouf’s Chevrolet Camaro (Bumblebee) in Transformers, American muscle is hardly lacking for representation in the world of movie cars.

Still, even considering such blockbusters, few films are as impactful in their automotive presence as Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 Death Proof. With its matte black paint and infamous reputation, the starring Nova was more than a means to move the plot — it was a central character.

Between the graphics and hood ornament, there’s no mistaking this Chevrolet Nova.

As it turns out, a Chevrolet purporting to have a connection to the film has recently surfaced for sale. And here’s the thing: it’s one among many legendary movie vehicles being sold off as part of a larger auction.

A Nova with notable connections

That’s because a car museum in Englewood, Colorado — Rodz and Bodz — has recently been forced to close its doors on account of a real estate development deal.

Since its founding as a prop house in 2017, the location has served as the home of countless iconic movie vehicles, and one of the stars of the collection is the 1970 Chevrolet Nova you see before you.

Sony Just Gave Its New Headphones a Flagship-Worthy Upgrade

Sony is getting more serious about gaming. Way more serious.

This week, Sony announced a bunch of “firsts” of gaming peripherals, including its first gaming mouse (Inzone Mouse-A), its first gaming keyboard (Inzone KBD-H75), and its first gaming-focused in-ear monitors (Inzone E9).

Arguably more exciting, however, is that Sony has also introduced a second-generation version of its 2022-released Inzone H9, which has been one of the best gaming headsets on the market.

The new model, Inzone H9 II, has been upgraded in basically every way. But the coolest thing about it? It’s more similar to Sony’s elite noise-canceling headphones, the WH-1000XM6, than ever before.

Trickle-down drivers

The headline feature of the new Sony Inzone H9 II gaming headset is that, for the first time, Sony has upgraded it with the same 30mm dynamic drivers as in its flagship Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones, which are definitely one of the best (and best-sounding) active noise-canceling headphones on the market.

The Inzone H9 II supports modes for active noise-cancellation and transparency, as well, but don’t expect those to be quite on the same level as the WH-1000XM6.

Did an Unlikely Brand Make the Ultimate Entry-Level Street Motorcycle?

In fairness, that will change next year, and this cruiser does offer an extremely approachable seat height of 27.1 inches. But otherwise, it’s a $9,999 motorcycle with an engine more than twice as big, plus a wet weight of 481 pounds and a nearly 61-inch wheelbase.

That’s where KTM’s smallest street bike comes in. At 364 pounds, with a ~53-inch wheelbase, narrow waist and 31.4-inch seat height, the 250 Duke is much closer in size to what most of us learn on, dramatically easing the transition from the parking lot to the road.

Scrappy AF

On those grounds alone, this bike is pretty compelling for newer riders and even seasoned vets. But at just $4,599, it’s got a lot of other factors in its favor too.

At the heart of the steel trellis main frame and aluminum subframe, the engine is a liquid-cooled 249cc single-cylinder 4-stroke making 31 hp and 25Nm of torque. Not huge numbers, I admit, but plenty for urban hijinks and rural twisties, especially considering its other specs.

The same engine used in some of KTM’s proven off-road bikes, this 249cc single cylinder packs a (compact) punch.

This Hardcore Military Tool Watch Brand Finally Made a Pilot’s Watch

The watch’s crown is abutted by large, chamfered crown guards and screws down, helping to ensure a robust 200m of water resistance. Is that more than what’s needed for a pilot’s watch? Probably, but given that the 42mm case is just 12mm thick, I don’t think many will complain.

There are multiple strap options for the Dualtimer, all of which seamlessly integrate into the case. Most premium is a flat H-link stainless steel bracelet with polished chamfers and a butterfly clasp. There are also textured rubber straps in black, orange and white that appear to be the same straps available on the Milgraph. There’s allegedly a black leather strap option, but it doesn’t appear on the product page. (In general, I’ll say that Micromilspec’s website is … not great. There’s a lot of inconsistent product info on there.)

Close-up of a micromilspec wristwatch with a glowing bezel displaying numbers 8 to 22 in bright blue light and green luminescent hands and markers on the dial, set against a dark background. The watch case has a textured edge and a brushed metal finish.
The bicolor application of Super-LumiNova X1 makes it extremely easy to distinguish between time zones in the dark.
Micromilspec

My favorite feature of the Dualtimer, and one that sets it apart from most other pilot’s GMT watches, is the lume treatment. The hands, indices and bezel markings all use ultrabright Super-LumiNova X1, but in different shades. The hands and indices of the main timekeeping glow green, while the bezel and GMT hand glow blue, making it extremely easy to distinguish between the two time zones in any light.

Pricing and Availability

While it doesn’t have quite the head-turning looks or crazy-high functionality of the Milgraph, the Dualtimer is still another attractive and purpose-built winner from Micromilspec. Plus, at around half the price of the Milgraph, it also marks an easier entry into the brand for curious collectors.

Like all of Micromilspec’s releases, the Dualtimer is an annual release and is made to order. Lead time is about six months, and the price ranges from $1,955 on a strap to $2,035 on the bracelet.

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph Pink Gold

Fittingly released for Monterey Car Week 2025, this pink gold and black titanium version of Roger Dubuis’s Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph is essentially a hypercar for your wrist. The watch’s exceptional in-house automatic flyback chronograph movement has all the standard car-sounding parts you’d expect from a high-end chronograph calibre, like a column wheel and vertical clutch, but it also includes some exclusive Roger Dubuis innovations that are even more in tune with automotive engineering. There’s the Second Braking System built into the clutch, which keeps the chronograph hand from flickering, and the 120° Rotating Minute Counter, which reads more like a speedometer than a traditional chronograph register. The watch is priced at $135,000 and is limited to 88 pieces.

Colnago C68 Rossa

This stunning new limited-edition road bicycle honors the 90th anniversary of La Vuelta, which kicks off this weekend, for the first time ever hosted by Torino. Naturally, a 70-year-old Italian brand must follow up its rollout of the 2023 Giro d’Italia C68 and 2024 Tour de France one with an equally iconic official bike of the Spanish Grand Tour race. A dual homage to Spain and Torino, this C68 draws its inspiration from a creature with meaning to both places — the bull — and is festooned with unique touches including silver metal leaf and Candy Red finishing, a Vuelta trophy-inspired bottle cage, a specially branded seat and fork and dedicated components from Prologo, Enve, Carbon-Ti and CeramicSpeed. Befitting the anniversary, only 90 individually numbered units are available.

Todd Snyder Suede Dylan Jacket in Oxblood

The Dylan Jacket was one of the first pieces Todd Snyder introduced under his solo label. It has been a staple of the brand ever since, a perennial best-seller, and Snyder has revealed on multiple occasions that it remains one of his favorite creations. It is a luxurious take on an American trucker jacket, with double flap chest pockets, waist tabs and a snap front. We’ve seen the Dylan Jacket in dozens of fabrics, like Japanese denim and Italian suede, but the new oxblood suede might be the best-looking version yet. The rich burgundy, bordering on chocolate brown, has been a staple color in leather dress shoes for over a century, but transfers beautifully to a suede jacket.

Ayaneo

Ayaneo Pocket DS

The Nintendo DS was one of the best handheld gaming consoles of all time, full stop. Ayaneo’s Pocket DS looks like a valiant attempt to capture that same magic, albeit with a much more robust OS and tech specs. Per the brand, it’s the “world’s first dual screen flip Android handheld device.” It operates on the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 gaming platform, has dual screens (including a 7-inch OLED main screen), boasts a beefy 8,000 mAh battery and a bunch of other PC-grade specs. And since it’s Android, it should be compatible with Steam (although this is unconfirmed).

Can-Am

2026 Can-Am Outlander Electric ATV

For 2026, Can-Am is bringing the world the first mass-produced electric ATV with the launch of its Outlander EV. Propulsion comes from a Rotax E-Power unit, enabling 47 horsepower and 53 lb-ft of torque. In practice, the Outlander EV offersn 1,830 pounds of towing and 50 miles of range, along with zero vibration and virtually maintenance-free operation.

Sony Inzone E9

The Sony Inzone E9 are the brand’s first in-ear monitors specifically designed for gaming. They’ve been developed and tuned by FNATIC, a professional esports brand, and support 360 Spatial Sound. They also have a fully enclosed structure, combined with noise-isolating tips, that promises to do an excellent job of blocking out outside noises. Available in white (shown) or black.

Topo Designs Brilliantly Translates a Classic Outdoor Bag into a Minimalist EDC Darling

A few months ago, Topo Designs spectacularly beefed up one of its best EDC backpacks into a trail-ready hiking hauler. Now, the brand is reversing that approach for a new release.

The Topo Designs Cosmos Backpack takes a style from rock climbing and brilliantly adapts it to a commuter-friendly everyday carry bag — all without losing its original spirit.

Topo Designs Cosmos Backpack sitting in the dirt in front of a truck tire
The classic concept of a rock-climbing crag pack translates brilliantly into a minimalist EDC backpack.
Topo Designs

Rock-solid origins

The Cosmos Backpack is based on a rock-climbing classic: the crag pack. It might be the single most basic, essential piece of EDC that climbers use (carabiners don’t count, as they’re climbing gear, not EDC in this context).

The purpose of a crag pack is to help transport climbing necessities to and from … well, a crag — in other words, a cliff or rock face. That includes stuff like ropes, shoes, quickdraws and whatever else.

This bag [embraces] the minimalist overall styling and utility of its inspiration while also adding some EDC-focused quality-of-life updates.

This Affordable Audemars Piguet Alternative Takes Aim at the Royal Oak’s Bolder Brother

Pricing and availability

Maurice Lacroix says the Aikonic name is derived by combining “Aikon” with “IC,” for “innovative craftsmanship.” Uh, sure. I think it’s a lot more likely that someone came up with the punny name “Aikonic” and the brand worked backwards from there to justify it when, really, doing so wasn’t necessary.

Regardless of how ML came up with the name, though, this is a cool watch. Through its use of new materials, technology and styling, I think it’s distanced itself enough from the Aikon to stand on its own twelve claws, and I’m excited to see where the collection heads next.

Close-up of a maurice lacroix watch crown and case side, featuring brushed metal and ceramic surfaces and a textured black strap with a subtle logo. The lighting highlights the metallic details against a dark background.Maurice Lacroix

To start, there are five Aikonics to choose from. Three feature black ceramic bezels: one all-black version with a black DLC titanium case, one black version with a plain steel case and one steel version with a bright blue strap, hands and indices. There’s a steel version with a blue ceramic bezel that also features a matching blue strap, and then there’s my favorite, which combines a rare white ceramic bezel with a black and white strap and stainless steel case.

The four stainless steel models are each priced at $3,400, while the lone titanium Aikonic goes for $3,700.

This Wild Dune Buggy Packs a Porsche 911 Engine That Revs to 11,000 RPM

It’s a good thing, too, as drivers are liable to get sideways — the LFG comes powered by a four-valve variant of Tuthill’s 4.0-liter K engine. As the flat-six appears in the firm’s Porsche 911 restomod, it makes 350 horsepower and revs to some 11,000 rpm.

In other words, when paired to a six-speed sequential gearbox and a four-wheel-drive system with front, center and rear limited-slip differentials, the LFG is bound to, well… F’n Go.

A compact, futuristic off-road vehicle with a bright orange and black body, large rugged tires, and distinctive rear lights, parked on a dry grassy field at sunset with trees in the background.
As a modern Meyers Manx, Tuthill wanted the LFG to be comfortable enough for longer journeys, too.
Tuthill

The works

To that end, Meyers Manx and Tuthill have worked hard to make sure that the dune buggy is more than a one-trick pony.

So, even though it comes with rugged off-road components like twin five-way adjustable dampers and some chunky BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires, it features elevated design elements as well.

This Titanium Tool Improves on an EDC Classic in Some Crucial Ways

Fun fact: Carabiners, as we know them today, were inspired by rifle clips. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that German climber Otto Herzog adapted them for mountain ascents.

Since then, they’ve changed very little, even as they’ve made their way into the world of everyday carry. To this day, they still look and operate largely the same: with an oblong metal body and a spring-loaded metal gate.

But Titaner’s Titanium Belt Keychain alters that concept in a few noteworthy ways, making this version of the classic EDC tool more unique, secure, compact and even convenient than its brethren.

Two identical silver metal carabiner clips with a sleek, modern design are shown side by side on a light purple background. Each carabiner features a rounded rectangular loop and a locking mechanism with two screws and a sliding latch for secure closure. The top carabiner has a slightly darker outline compared to the bottom one.
The Titaner Titanium Belt Keychain is available in both stonewashed and polished finishes.
Titaner

An icon, reinvented

Overall, Titaner’s reimagining of this classic everyday carry tool shares a lot in common with its relatives. It’s still oblong, as it is meant to attach to belts, belt loops and other attachment points (like backpack webbing).

It also still has a gate that opens it up to allow users to attach and detach it from wherever you keep it. However, that’s where things get a little … different.

A Historic Name in Ford Muscle Cars Has Taken Its Talents to a Rugged Nissan Truck

A new Frontier

Nissan’s changes to the Frontier aren’t exclusive to its Roush collaboration, either. As part of the 2026 Frontier refresh, the automaker has given the truck several new options across its various trim levels.

For instance, the SV grade gets new LED headlights, remote start and a Dark Armor package that makes for a more understated appearance.

Nissan hasn’t forgotten about its regular PRO-X and PRO-4X Frontiers for 2026.

Likewise, the PRO-X and PRO-4X gain an eye-catching color option in the form of a lime and neon yellow combo known as ‘Citrus Strike.’

Rounded out by standard features, like a new drive mode selector, and optional upgrades, such as an All-Weather package, it makes for a compelling alternative to the likes of Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota — especially when you consider the price.

Even though it’s priced at less than $50,000, the Nissan Frontier comes laden with tech.

The North Face’s Go-Anywhere Travel Duffel Is Suddenly Very Affordable

Inspired by the rugged legacy of The North Face’s iconic Base Camp duffel, the Base Camp Voyager Duffel 42L brings a fresh level of thoughtful design and everyday versatility to the competitive adventure duffel category.

Built from recycled polyester and made to endure, it skillfully bridges the gap between outdoor resilience and city-smart organization.

Right now, REI is offering a rare opportunity to grab this do-it-all duffel in a timeless TNF Black/TNF White colorway for under $100.

Here’s a rundown of the standout features that set this bag apart.

Features Galore

The main compartment features an adjustable divider that allows you to section off packing zones for better organization—or remove it entirely if you’d rather use the full 42 liters of space without interruption.
The North Face

What makes the Base Camp Voyager stand out is its combination of rugged build quality and thoughtful design. Constructed from 300D recycled polyester tarpaulin with a TPU laminate and reinforced with 840D recycled ballistic nylon, the bag offers durability that resists moisture and abrasions while still feeling surprisingly lightweight. At just over two pounds, it’s built for travel but won’t weigh you down.

My Most Complimented Blazer of the Summer Is 50% Off Right Now

After ten years working in the fashion industry and another five years covering it online, I’ve accumulated what some might call “too much clothing.”

Ironically, I tend to gravitate toward a handful of items and wear them into the ground.

This summer, my go-to blazer and favorite new garment is the Italian Linen Silk Double Stripe Sport Coat from Todd Snyder.

Light beige blazer with subtle vertical stripes in a slightly darker shade, featuring two buttons on the front, four buttons on each cuff, a notched lapel, and a chest pocket. The blazer is laid flat on a multicolored patterned rug with blue, orange, and cream tones.
The lightly rumpled look enhances the nonchalant charm of the blazer.
Photo by Brad Lanphear for Gear Patrol

It is an unstructured, unlined blazer made from 60 percent linen and 40 percent silk. It has a soft shoulder, double vents and two buttons.

My favorite feature is the double patch pockets. I wish it had a complete set of patch pockets, but I can live with the vented breast pocket.

The creamy white color has grayish-green and light blue vertical stripes of varying widths, resembling a faded cricket blazer. I have found that it looks best with washed-out jeans and navy chinos, and I prefer a plain white t-shirt underneath.

Timex Winks at Omega with Its Own Snoopy Anniversary Watch

This year marks the 75th anniversary of one of the world’s most famous comic strips, Peanuts. Charles Schulz’s iconic cartoon starring lovable loser Charlie Brown made its debut on October 2, 1950, and it’s arguably just as popular as ever, even 25 years after its 50-year original run came to a close.

Also turning 75 this year is Peanuts’ most beloved and recognizable character, Snoopy. Everyone’s favorite cartoon beagle first appeared in the third strip of the series on October 4, 1950, and has since gone on to become a global icon and, somewhat unexpectedly, a horological superstar.

Today, several brands license Snoopy’s image for use on their watches, with the most notable being Omega. The Swiss luxury brand has used Snoopy on a trio of special-edition Speedmasters that celebrate the 40th, 45th and 50th anniversaries of Omega receiving NASA’s Silver Snoopy award for its pivotal role in the U.S. space program, particularly the Apollo moon missions.

Since 2025 marks 55 years since Omega’s award, the brand is widely expected to debut a new Snoopy Speedmaster. But with no sign of that happening yet, longtime Snoopy partner Timex is here to tide us over with a Snoopy anniversary watch of its own.

Timex is celebrating Snoopy’s birthday by giving the world an awesome watch.
Timex

Birthday beagle

Timex admittedly has produced a ton of Snoopy watches, but this one feels extra special.

For one, the watch in question is a Marlin Automatic. This is one of Timex’s best-looking watches, one of its most premium watches and one of its coolest watches. It’s a modernized version of a classic Timex dress watch from the 1960s with Mad Men-approved looks, and it’s got an automatic movement, which is still a rarity for Timex.

Timex Reissues Another Outstanding Affordable Retro Watch, This Time from the ’70s

For instance, it boasts a modern version of the brand’s quartz analog movement, keeping it both remarkably accurate and exceptionally affordable. Per the brand, the movement is “capable of keeping time to within milliseconds per day.”

It’s housed inside a stainless steel tonneau-shaped case measuring 39 millimeters in diameter. While that sizing has come back en vogue recently, it’s also true to the era from which this watch emerged.

The bracelet is a dead-ringer for the one on the Vacheron Constantin 222.
Timex

Space-age styling

Like the watch it emulates, this new version is dripping with 1970s-inspired styling. It comes in two colorway options: silver with a dark blue dial and gold with a tiger’s eye dial.

As mentioned, both come with a tonneau-shaped stainless steel case. And mated to that case is an integrated bracelet that’s extremely similar in style to the one found on the much higher-end, ultra-hyped Vacheron Constantin 222.

A British Hi-Fi Maker Just Gave Its Revered Bookshelf Speakers a Bespoke Upgrade

Last month, Monitor Audio gave its most affordable line of loudspeakers, its Bronze Series, a massive overhaul. Specifically, the new Bronze Series 7G featured upgraded drivers and cabinets, along with enhanced aesthetics. According to the brand, it aims to set “a new benchmark for entry-level performance.”

Now, the renowned British hi-fi manufacturer isn’t giving the same treatment to its Silver Series 7G line of loudspeakers, which were released in 2021 and are the “next step up” from the Bronze range. However, it is introducing new limited-edition models.

Carbon Black Metallic

Since its 2021 release, Monitor Audio has offered its Silver Series 7G line of loudspeakers in five different finishes, including Natural Walnut, High Gloss Black, Black Oak, Ash and Satin White.

However, it is now introducing an “LE” (or “limited edition”) version in Carbon Black Metallic. According to the brand, the new finish “exudes sophistication while delivering breathtaking clarity, depth, and power.”

Samsung

Samsung Neo QLED 4K QN90F TV (115″)

Samsung’s QN90F is its new flagship line of Neo QLED 4K TVs for 2025 — they’re simply gorgeous. When it was released in March 2025, the largest size that Samsung offered was a 98-inch model, priced at $15,000. As of August 2025, Samsung has now taken it up a notch by releasing an even larger 115-inch model. According to the press release, the display “delivers stunning, AI-enhanced picture quality that’s optimized to deliver details that stay sharp and clear on the big screen.”

Ringbrothers 1971 Aston Martin DBS ‘Octavia’

Wisconsin-based restomod specialists Ringbrothers have officially entered the export game with the debut of ‘Octavia.’ An American take on the 1971 Aston Martin DBS, it features a dramatic widebody design, an abundance of carbon fiber and numerous Bond-inspired touches (like the name). Under the hood, Octavia packs an 805-horsepower supercharged Ford V8, and it boasts modernities like C7 Corvette rear suspension.

Columbia ROC Tech Cargo Pants

In the brand’s words, these pants are “overqualified for everyday adventures.” While that sounds boastful and perhaps hyperbolic, they did some testing to that end: Columbia made a rope out of these pants and dangled someone from a helicopter to prove it. Not only are these pants incredibly tough, but they also offer plenty of comfort and utility, thanks to some built-in stretch and plenty of pockets. Perhaps best of all: you can have all this and more for a paltry fee (relative to other, similar adventure pants).

Chronoswiss Opus Purple Rain

The original Chronoswiss Opus debuted in 1995 as the world’s first skeletonized automatic chronograph, and 30 years later, the brand is celebrating its trailblazing model with a seriously special version. The Opus Purple Rain features a Grade 5 titanium case that’s been colored purple, along with the skeletonized dial, using chemical vapor deposition. Powering the watch is the skeletonized C.741S movement, which also boasts purple CVD treatment on its rotor. Lastly, and most unique of all, is the “Magic” strap. Made of white leather, the strap is UV-reactive, meaning its color changes to purple in sunlight. Limited to 30 pieces, the celebratory Opus Purple Rain is priced at $17,000.

GiantMouse GMF1 Jubilee Silver

GiantMouse celebrates its 10th anniversary with the stunning Jubilee Collection, an exclusive series of high-end fixed-blade knives. While the Jubilee Gold will only be available at August 23rd’s grand opening of the brand’s showroom in East Lansing, Michigan — and the Copper sold out — the Silver drops today at noon and, considering there are just 28 units, won’t last long. Meticulously manufactured in Maniago, Italy, it features a 2.7-inch blade made of rippling Vinland Damasteel and a handle made of Space Coral Silver Carbon (carbon fiber and silver-infused resin). The knife measures 5.27 inches total, weighs 2.5 ounces and comes with a handcrafted black leather sheath.

UES Heavy Flannel Shirt

Leave it to a Japanese workwear brand to reproduce a perfect midcentury American flannel work shirt. UES used a vintage American Schonherr shuttle power loom to weave 14.5-ounce heavyweight 100-percent cotton flannel with a soft brushed interior. The plaid patterns are direct dyed after the fabric is woven, creating a rich color that will develop patina with age. It is sewn with double needle construction throughout, save for the chain-stitched side seams. All buttons, including those on the two chest pockets, are ivory palm nut. Eight colors are available through Blue Owl, including six plaids, a navy pinstripe and a solid dark navy blue.

Coros Nomad

On paper, the Nomad shares a lot with the best-in-class Coros Pace Pro, including an AMOLED screen and even the same price tag. However, a handful of features would make this the preferred adventure watch for trail runners, mountain bikers and even anglers that crave more data than speed and distance. For starters, the Nomad has full color maps (something missing on the significantly more expensive Garmin Instinct 3), Voice Pins to record notes on specific parts of a trail and a log to record casts and catches on the water. According to Coros, the watch has a battery life of 22 days with “regular use.”

Leatherman’s State-of-the-Art Multi-Tool Gets a Striking, Robust New Edition

But perhaps the most significant feature — a first for Leatherman, as well as the larger multi-tool industry — is the Arc’s MagnaCut steel knife blade. This addition really boosted the Arc well above similarly outfitted tools, including Leatherman’s own, and into the grail multi-tool conversation.

Wait; that’s not all! The impressive tool boasts all of this, as well as the brand’s Free technology — meaning every single tool opens smoothly and, more importantly, is wholly one-hand operable.

Of course, the Arc Talos still sports the original model’s banner feature: a MagnaCut knife blade.
Leatherman

Cerakote of arms

It remains to be said that all of the aforementioned features in the previous section already existed in the Leatherman Arc. So what sets the Talos apart? A couple of things, actually.

First, and most apparently, it gets a new brown colorway. This is the only alternative colorway for the tool. The original — and the only other one available — is silver with black highlights, including the blade’s DLC coating (which extends to parts of the handle and the pocket clip).

This Viral Mil-Spec Tool Watch Has Never Looked Better

The 42 x 15mm case is made of microblasted Grade 5 titanium, which is both lighter and harder than stainless steel. The heavily guarded screw-down crown sits on the left side of the case to avoid digging into your wrist while putting the watch through its paces, and it has a red inner portion to warn you when it’s unscrewed so you don’t compromise the watch’s 200m of water resistance.

The 60-minute bezel is unidirectional and features four large indents that make it easier to turn while wearing bulky gloves. Micromilspec calls this a QuadGrip bezel, and while it heightens functionality, it also further elevates the watch’s visual similarities to the Overseas Everest.

The integrated textured rubber strap looks phenomenal, and while white is the standard option for the white dial, the watch is also available on a black or orange rubber strap. The dial’s luminescence is handled by Super-LumiNova X1 on the hands and indices, some of the brightest lume around.

The watch’s integrated rubber strap is available in white, black or orange.
Micromilspec

Finally, we have the movement, and it’s a good one. Powering the watch is a Swiss-made La Joux-Perret LJP L121 automatic chronograph GMT. That’s right — with chronograph and GMT complications on board, this watch effectively combines the functionality of both Vacheron Everest watches.

The GMT tracks a 24-hour inner bezel, and the chronograph clocks up to 12 hours, with the subdials for chronograph hours, minutes and running seconds all clearly labeled on the dial for practicality. The movement is regulated to +/- 4 seconds per day and has a 60-hour power reserve.

Someone Finally Made a Super Shoe for Your Average Everyday Runner

Does On’s newest racer signal a new dawn for plated super shoes?

On

And we’re off …

Though still relatively new to running — especially compared to Nike, Adidas, Brooks and New Balance — On has quickly become one of the main brands to beat.

That’s more than a figure of speech.

The brand’s innovative spray-on super shoe has already won a third of all Major marathons, and it is quickly becoming one of the fastest shoes on the triathlon circuit.

on cloudboom strike lightspray shoe
On’s spray-on super shoe isn’t just innovative, it’s fast. The Cloudboom Strike LS (pictured) has won several high-profile marathons and triathlons.

While podiums (and world records) give any shoe manufacturer credibility, they should matter very little to the average runner.

That’s why On made its latest marathon racer, the Cloudboom Max, a shoe the company says was “engineered for finishing times of around four hours or more.”

In other words: your average runner.

Pair of white and light gray running shoes with black laces, featuring a green gradient midsole and black accents, including a large black logo on the side. The shoes have a breathable mesh upper and a thick, cushioned sole designed for comfort and performance.
Unlike most super shoes designed for the fastest athletes, On’s new Cloudboom Max is designed for everyday runners.
On

Marginal gains

It is true that super shoes work, scientifically and statistically.

Dozens of records have fallen since the Vaporfly entered the mainstream, ushering in an arm’s race among manufacturers from Nike to Hoka — and, yes, even On.

But it is also true that super shoes are optimized for athletes at the highest level of the sport.

Studies show that the super-shoe tech — that is, plates, next-gen foams and ultra-aggressive rockers — can significantly improve efficiency. But the numbers go down when looking at slower runners, where factors like running economy, endurance and body weight vary wildly.

And that’s before you even get to the debate about whether or not they increase the injury risk among less experienced runners.

The Cloudboom Strike (pictured) is the laced version of the spray-on shoe many pros wear. Both were released in 2024.

Still super

To be clear, the Cloudboom Max, officially unveiled on the brand’s Instagram page, is still a super shoe.

It even borrows a few features from the existing Cloudboom Strike, including a midsole plate and 40mm stack of Pebax-based Helion HF — or what On calls “hyper foam.”

The Cloudboom Max may have everyday runners in mind but it’s still designed with high-end materials, including Pebax foam.
On
The stack height measures 40mm.
On

However, the specifics of shoe cater to runners who, even on their best day, will find themselves on the race course for four hours or more.

For starters, the glass fiber-infused plate is slightly more flexible than the one found in the Cloudboom Strike, catering to a wider swath of running styles. It’s also positioned to put the foot in a more natural position.

The Speedboard is more flexible, catering to a wider range of running styles than your typical super-shoe plate.
On

Everyday runners, everyday performance

But perhaps the most noticeable difference between the Cloudboom Max and other elite super shoes, from On and otherwise, rests with the upper.

In a quest to shave off as many grams as possible, brands have adopted ultralight mesh materials that turn a blind eye to comfort.

nike running shoe
Many race-day super shoes have lightweight uppers that turn a blind eye to comfort.
Photo by Jack Seemer for Gear Patrol

That’s all well and good for elite runners who shuttle to start lines and finish a marathon in little over two hours.

But what if you’re spending the majority of your day in a pair, including the time it often takes to get through race-day security and line up in an assigned corral?

The upper of the Cloudboom Max follows that of a more traditional training shoe, where comfort and longevity are paramount.
On

The Cloudboom Max balances the scales with a breathable mesh upper that may not put comfort over performance but at least treats the two like equal priorities.

All in all, the shoe has a listed weight of 10.4 ounces — a 41 percent increase over the Cloudboom Strike (7.4 ounces).

The shoe has a listed weight of 10.4 ounces — more than 40 percent heavier than the Cloudboom Strike.
On

Will runners want it?

Ultimately, time will have to tell how everyday runners will respond to a race-day super shoe specifically designed for the middle of the pack.

To date, making podiums doesn’t just translate to success on the course but in the board room, to boot.

According to Strava’s most recent Year in Sport report, 44 percent of all marathons uploaded to the platform were performed in carbon-plated shoes — a 14 percent uptick led by the record-setting Nike Alphafly.

The Vaporfly (top) and Alphafly (bottom) aren’t just successful on the road. They’re also the most successful super shoes from a commercial standpoint.
Jack Seemer for Gear Patrol

In future years, On will hope shoes like the Cloudboom Max can give the old guard a run for its money.

The model is available now for On members and costs $230. At launch, it comes in three colorways. A broad release is scheduled to follow on August 21.
