The 9 Best New Fitness Gear Releases of July

Summer’s height has no shortage of sporting events. This month kicked off with the tail end of the Euro Cup, continued with the Tour de France and will culminate with the start of the Tokyo Olympics (finally). Sure, there won’t be any spectators this time around, but most of us are watching from afar anyhow. And if you did have to cancel plans to attend, well, now you can spend some of that extra cash on all the new fitness gear that came out this month.

The Decorations on Your Glasses Actually Do Serve a Purpose

Eyeglasses, as we know them today, are an 18th-century invention. A Brit named Edward Scarlett conceptualized what he called “temple glasses,” a pair of lenses posed together with wiring and attached to metal arms that’d wrap around the ear. He wasn’t the first, The College of Optometrists argue. Factually speaking, he may have simply been the first with an advertising budget. Who knows?

By the mid-20th century, eyeglass manufacturers had shifted from using metals and cellulose nitrate to cellulose acetate. The wood pulp-derived material proved stabler than cellulose nitrate and more stylish than bare metals. But the transition required a little manufacturing magic. The introduction of hinges didn’t happen during the 2oth century — Scarlett’s frames were foldable, too — but acetate frames required new, visible hardware to hold everything in place.

And now we arrived back where we started: getting to the bottom of what the dots, leaves, arrows, bars, and beyond on the front of your frames really do. To be (mechanically? linguistically?) correct, they’re rivets — or a decorative design meant to be an anchor (or simply a cover) for rivets on the other side. As for why they aren’t all the same? Depending on your glasses’ given hinge type — tenon, spring, hidden or hingeless — there may be different rivets.

lemtosh glasses

Moscot

For anyone with a bit of mechanical know-how, this could be common sense. However, most acetate or full-frame glasses, which are the type that require front-facing rivets, are put together using tenon hinges. These stack together — the stacking parts are called charniers — and get secured using a vertical screw. Rivets are then driven into the frame following the tenons’ formation.

Rivets are clustered in sets of two or three, meaning eight or 12 in total. There are a set on either side of the frame when you’re looking at them straight on and sets on both arms, by the temples. Some come barred together, hence why you’ll see a rectangular plate out front instead of disconnected dots. Others use the tradition as a form of decoration. Their frames don’t need rivets at all, but their presence implies a polished finish — and quality craftsmanship — even if they’re the cheapest pair you could find. There’s something put-together about acetate frames with pronounced rivets. And ones with “signatures” — the palm leaves on Garrett Leight’s Naples frame, the diamonds on Moscot’s Lemtosh frame — offer a way of signaling you’re wearing frames from a favorable brand. These Adventure Vacations Are the Perfect Post-Pandemic Excursion

Now that things are beginning to open up again, trips and adventures are being booked, airline travel is at its highest peak since February 2020 and people are buying all the gear they need for their first post-pandemic vacation. This is good news, whether you’re looking for a relaxing week away or the adventure of a lifetime. No matter what type of trip you long for, it feels like our collective sense of adventure has certainly been stymied by the pandemic.

If you fall into the latter category and the adventure of a lifetime is what you’re seeking, there are a handful of websites you can check out to book that adventure vacation you’ve always wanted to go on. Picture yourself overlanding in a lifted Jeep Wrangler topped with a tent. Or wading in a Colorado river landing the biggest native trout you’ve ever caught. Or flying down the tarmac on the longest, albeit most rewarding, bike ride of your life.

Depending on what you want to spend, you can book something as straightforward as a kayaking discovery course for $30 or go as big as a week-long fly-fishing trip in Colorado for a few thousand dollars. Many of the sites below offer worldwide trips, but as we wait for the world to open back up for travel, the coming year might be the best chance you’ll have to explore your own backyard. If these sound like ideal trips, regardless of the price point you’re after, you’ve found the right place. It is time to get out there.

Rimac Nevera at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2021

Rimac Automobili just posted a video of their amazing Nevera at the 2021 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, they had the dark grey car on display at the Michelin Supercar Paddock, and that car would also be taken onto the hill climb circuit, both with clients and journalists in the passenger seat, this car first arrived in the UK for some private VIP events together with H.R.Owen in London.

A second, white Rimac Nevera with blue accents was shown on the ‘Electric Avenue’, a part of the Goodwood show exclusively dedicated to all-electric cars, and the Nevera hypercar drew a lot of attention at both parts, this two-minute video shows some of the highlights from Rimac during the four-day Goodwood event, as the doors have closed now, the Rimac Nevera continues her global voyage, next stop will be Spain.

Victory for the McLaren 720S GT3X in the Timed Shootout Final.

The famous Goodwood Festival of Speed closed its doors on Sunday, but not without an amazing victory for the McLaren 720S GT3X, taking the win at the top of the leaderboard of the Timed Shootout Final with a time of 45.01 seconds, over a second faster than the runner up from the competition. The impressive McLaren 720S GT3X has been developed by the motorsport division at McLaren, the McLaren Customer Racing department was able to create a special race car that didn’t need to adhere to regular racing regulations like the 720S GT3 that has to comply with FIA GT3 rules.

For the 1,210 kg GT3X, the hand-built, 4.0-Liter V8 twin-turbo engine delivers 720 PS, but has 30 more PS available at the push of a button, without having to deal with regulations, the 720S GT3X is a true performance-optimized evolution of the bespoke GT3 racecar. The aerodynamically optimized body has been developed using ‘Computational Fluid Dynamics’ (CFD) combined with F1 wind tunnel testing, which allowed McLaren Factory Driver Rob Bell to put down this amazing time at Goodwood.

Do keep in mind this amazing McLaren 720S GT3X can’t be ordered at a regular McLaren dealership, you will have to turn to one of only 11 official McLaren Motorsport Retailers worldwide, as part of the purchase and ownership package, McLaren Automotive can provide dedicated technical track support for each owner. This program is carried out by the customer support engineers from the in-house McLaren Customer Racing division – the team that has designed and developed the model alongside the 720S GT3 global customer race program.

But McLaren came along with several more cars aside from their black 720S GT3X, for instance, McLaren Chief Test Driver, Kenny Bräck took the wheel of a stunning gold painted McLaren Elva for several stints on the hill climb circuit at Goodwood, something the thousands of visitors convenience as the highlight of their visit, seeing the cars on display in the Supercar paddock is nice, but seeing those priceless exotics and hypercars being driven at speed during the hill climb is why Goodwood became the largest event of its kind.

And McLaren had yet another highlight at Goodwood, the brand new McLaren Artura made her dynamic debut at this year’s Festival of Speed,  the bright blue Artura was also driven hard during the hill climb, but also drew a lot of attention at the McLaren stand in the paddock, joined by a GT, a 765LT and a 620R, the latter two being piloted by Bruno Senna.

“Winning the Timed Shootout Final was the perfect end to an excellent 2021 Festival of Speed for McLaren. Rob Bell drove magnificently, showcasing the outstanding capabilities of the 720S GT3X to great effect in mastering the challenging Goodwood Hill. And with so many of our cars on display and in action – including the all-new Artura making its public dynamic debut and the remarkable Elva – this was a wonderful opportunity to meet customers and fans face-to-face once again and celebrate all things McLaren.”
Mike Flewitt, CEO, McLaren Automotive

This Lamp is Made of Actual Orange Peels

With its smooth sculpted lines and modern silhouette, it’s pretty crazy that Ohmie’s Orange Lamp is made from actual orange peels. But the cutting-edge Italian design is also the first lamp to boast a wholly Circular Design, meaning it comes from the earth and is compostable, so at the end of its life, it goes back to the earth. The orange matter is derived from the non-edible parts of the fruit mixed with a bio-polymer to yield a sturdy material.

Porsche’s Most Heretical 911 Yet Could Arrive Very Soon

It’s certainly safe to say the car market is moving toward electric power rapidly — perhaps faster than most could have predicted even two years ago. (Could you imagine mainstream politicians contemplating outright combustion bans back in 2019?) That’s set mean major changes for even defiantly combustion-powered vehicles; full-electric Dodge Charger and Ram 1500 models may be on the road by 2024, hot on the heels of the electric Hummer and Ford’s EV F-150 Lightning. One that may be about to join that movement? The Porsche 911.

How do we know? Well, U.K.-based publication Autocar recently came across spy shots of an unusual 911 Turbo testing at the Nürburgring. The blacked-out rear windows strongly suggest that Porsche is hiding some battery assistance back there; plus, the car also has a yellow warning sticker, mandatory for testing hybrid vehicles in Germany. Logic would suggest that’s Porsche working on the promised “very powerful” hybrid 911.

Starting with the 911 Turbo would be a sensible place to begin hybridizing the 911. When you get to the super-expensive 911s, the GT3 is for the Porsche purists; the Turbo is the car that chases mad, super-car levels of power and performance. Adding a hybrid option for the Turbo would be more palatable to those buyers — and probably necessary for Porsche to keep up with performance rivals who are also adopting hybrid tech, like McLaren and Ferrari. The tech could filter down from there to the daily-driver 911s. (Then again, it’s also possible Porsche is just testing hybrid tech in a Turbo body for some other reason, and will launch it as a standalone model.)

It’s unlikely we will see a full-electric 911 soon. Porsche has previously said one wouldn’t arrive before 2030. Even with the brand at the forefront of EV technology with vehicles like the Taycan, the technical hurdles to getting an electric 911 that still looks and drives like a 911 may currently be insurmountable. (And Porsche could still try to save combustion as an option for 911 buyers with a synthetic low-carbon fuel.) Still, with the 911’s future a prerequisite for Porsche’s survival and the 992 model on the verge of a mid-life cycle refresh, we wouldn’t be shocked (pun intended) to see a 911 hybrid debut by the end of 2022.

Thinking About Buying an iPad Mini? Here’s Why You Should Wait

Apple hasn’t updated the iPad mini in nearly two-and-a-half years, but that’s set to change since it’s expected to announce a refreshed version of its tiny iPad this fall. So, if you’ve been thinking about buying a iPad mini (which are frequently discounted on Amazon), you might want to hold off for a few months.

When Apple last refreshed the iPad mini in March 2019, it gave it a bunch of new features — an upgraded processor, a new Retina display and support for the first-generation Apple Pencil — but not a design overhaul; it still looked identical to the iPad mini from 2016. With the upcoming sixth-generation iPad mini, Apple is expected to give it a much needed design refresh.

Here’s what we know so far.

No more Home button

Like the recent iPad Pros and iPad Air, the upcoming iPad mini is expected to ditch the Home button to make room for a bigger display. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, the mini’s new design is expected to more closely resemble that of the recent iPad Air (but smaller, obviously, because we’re taking about the mini), meaning that Apple will likely integrate Touch ID into the side power button rather that upgrading the front-camera system so that it supports Face ID.

An edge-to-edge display

The current iPad mini has a 7.9-inch display. Thanks to the removal of the Home button and the slimming down of the bezels, Bloomberg‘s Gurman is predicting the next-generation iPad mini will have a slightly larger 8.4-inch display. The overall size of the new mini should remain be about the same.

A USB-C charging port?

As it stands, the iPad Air and the two iPad Pro models are the only current iPad models with a USB-C charging port; the current iPad mini and 10.2-inch iPad both still have Lightning charging ports. It seems odd that Apple would add a USB-C charging port to the upcoming mini considering that it’s still going to be an “entry-level” tablet, but that’s exactly what Jon Prosser, a known Apple leaker, is predicting.

No M1 chip

The upcoming iPad mini isn’t expected to get the M1 treatment. Instead, Prosser is predicting that Apple will give it an A14 chip, which is the same processor that it uses in the latest (fourth generation) iPad Air and the iPhone 12 models. This should still give the new mini quite the performance bump over its predecessor, which has Apple’s A12 Bionic chip (also found in the 2018’s iPhone XS).

Dodge announces plans to launch the world’s first electric muscle car in 2024

After being adamant about the shift to all-electric configurations, more carmakers have gradually announced their plans for electrification. Given that emission-free rides are accounting for a considerable number of sales over the years, refusing to adapt would be foolish. Dodge becomes the latest American marque to confirm its electric initiative.

For now, there is no information about which machine under its stable would be the first to debut with an electric powertrain. However, Dodge says it will be the first of its kind – a zero-emission muscle car. We’re not exactly sure about this claim though.

One of its rivals – Ford – already unveiled an all-electric Mustang with a six-speed manual transmission. Furthermore, this was followed by more battery-powered pony cars under the Blue Oval’s badge. Nevertheless, we have to point out that those were not commercially available.

Dodge’s plans, on the other hand, is to ship its “American eMuscle” to showrooms and to eager buyers by 2024. “Our engineers are reaching a practical limit of what we can squeeze from internal combustion innovation,” said Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis.

He then added: “They know, we know, that electric motors can give us more. And if we know of a technology that can give our customers an advantage, we have an obligation to embrace it.” The upcoming Dodge electric muscle car will use the STLA Large platform.

According to its parent company Stellantis, the capabilities of Dodge’s future are nothing short of remarkable. How about a whopping 886 horsepower with a battery that promises a range of about 500 miles when fully charged? A zero to 60 mph run will on take around two seconds.

Ram’s New Truck Is Tailor-Made for Affordable Off-Road Fun

Truck buyers love both off-road capability and having rigs that look badass. But having both in earnest can get pricey, whether you’re climbing up the trim levels or modifying the truck yourself on the aftermarket. But not always. Ram has just announced a new offering for 1500 buyers who want an off-road-ready truck straight from the dealer and don’t want to level up to the Rebel trim or a full-on TRX. It’s called the Backcountry Edition, and it will be available for the 2022 model year.

The 1500 Backcountry Edition will be based on the Ram 1500‘s Big Horn and Lone Star trims — one level up from the base Tradesman models. It will add a lot of functionality: the package includes the 4×4 off-road Group with tow hooks, skid plates, an electronic locking rear differential, off-road shocks, hill descent control and all-terrain tires. It also adds the Bed Utility Group with adjustable tie-downs, a bed extender, deployable bed step, bed lighting and a spray-in bed liner. All that should be enough for most Ram buyers who plan to head off the beaten path.

Ram is also giving the 1500 Backcountry Edition some unique appearance features. There’s ample black detailing, including black tu-tone paint, 18-inch black wheels, black badging, black exhaust tips, black headlamp bezels, black mirrors and black running boards. It also throws in a body-color grille surround and a body-color tonneau cover, for contrast.

The Backcountry edition, as noted, will be reasonably priced, starting at $40,085 (not including the mandatory $1,695 destination charge) — which is downright cheap by full-size truck standards and a bit less than the comparable Toyota Tundra Trail edition. Ram says the trucks will arrive sometime during Q3 of 2021.
