People Are Paying to Make Their Sneakers Look Vintage

The sneaker industry is in a state of disarray right now. We’ve talked about it before. Resellers upended how companies produce, stock, and sell their sneakers; how consumers perceive a new product; and how shoes are covered (by pubs like us) and coveted (by readers like you). I understand that a cast of collectors, designers, and devotees, albeit now tech companies, transformed early-2000s chat forums and IRL meetups (Sneaker Con and the sort) into a resale market set to be worth $30 billion dollars by 2030. Good for them! But this astronomical valuation begs the question: are people out of their minds? They’re shoes!

There’s a whole psychological rabbit hole I’m consciously avoiding heading down: the link between parts of our brains’ and collecting; the way social media’s made us spend more money; the connection between social anxiety and the clothes we wear. Sneakers are not only an easy thing to be convinced you need but something you’re urged to upkeep — to clean and never crease. But what if I told you there’s a subset of sneaker collectors spending their hard-earned cash on making their kicks look vintage.

It’s no secret that just as new sneakers fetch considerable cash, used ones do, too. Nike Jordan 1s from 1985 in varying states of decay go for five or six figures regularly. Sotheby’s has auctioned off tattered sneakers at astronomical prices. But footing the bill for cosmetic surgery for your sneakers, whether new or gently used, to make them look like those seems ludicrous, especially when we’ve been trained to nearly fetishize purchasing and unpacking a new pair and to treat a crease like a death sentence.

Nonetheless, meet Phillip Leyesa, Andrew Chiou, Huy Le and Ant Kai, a few names off the growing list of independent designers offering custom sneaker aging services. Capitalizing, it seems, off Instagram-induced hype, each ideates one-offs for their own wear or fulfills orders for others with impressive consistency. In fact, they’re so busy that only one of the four listed are currently accepting inquiries. Leyesa locked down a collaboration with StockX for a line of customized kicks. Le’s bio simply reads “Kitchen closed?.” Chiou — whose jobs take anywhere from 2-12 weeks and cost $250-$800 — operates on waitlist basis, and requests for his signature Sashiko dunks reopened on July 10. Kai’s accepting bookings via email.

Their completed projects are all over Instagram. However, how exactly each one works remains largely under wraps. A few use laces and crepe stainers from Foxtrot Uniform while others hint at more tedious tasks: reshaping the shoe, flattening the heels or adding new elements (like stitching or tags). Some customers will order new shoes and have them delivered directly to their booked designers. Other times, the kicks clients send in are already used — something they’d bought online or been holding on to.

andu.c

There is something undeniably cool, for lack of a better term, about all of their designs. They make an abstract thing — time — so evident. Cracked collars, discolored uppers, yellowed soles, and sun-faded laces; these features were once only achievable through actual use — countless hours on the court, in the front row at concerts, or being out late on the weekends. Evidence of age, albeit manufactured, tickles our soft spot for nostalgia. It’s no different than diners, old trucks or Daniel Arsham’s artwork. The good stuff endures and is made better by its bumps and bruises.

Buy a Pair and Book Your Project

Most designers start with Jordan 1s, 3s, 4s, or 5s, or Nike Dunks (High or Low). Some accept other models, but it’s always best to ask first. Your pair could be their first attempt at remaking an Air Force 1, for example, and that might mean a longer lead time in order to get it right.

The Best Gold Watches for Men

rolex oyster day date watch

Rolex

Gold is created by supernovas when neutron stars collide and is thought to be the first metal known to humans — but more importantly: it likely looks good on your wrist. It also has a long history in watchmaking, but you might even look right past all that simply for its famously bewitching shininess. Stainless steel tends to be the preferred material for most watches today, but there’s still a potent allure to the gold watch.

Go back to before the 1920s and 1930s when stainless steel was first used in watchmaking and you’ll find a lot of watches made from silver and gold. These are softer materials that are easier to machine — and it helps that they polish up particularly well. Unlike silver, though, gold is also highly resistant to tarnishing. Even after steel began to be used for watch cases, it didn’t become common until many decades later, and elegant gold watches remained popular.

Gold has weight both cultural and physical. Around the 1940s in the US, for example, a tradition began of presenting a gold watch to retiring employees after decades of service at a company. That practice has mostly been abandoned today, but the gold watch as a symbol of value, achievement and just something special remains in the popular memory.

If you want a gold watch today, there are many choices. You can simply get the look with a “gold-toned” or “gold-plated” watch, one with gold plating over a less expensive metal (usually steel), or you can spring for one of solid gold. Most solid gold watches use 18 carat gold, an alloy of 75% gold mixed with other metals that help harden it (and cost less than pure 24 carat, which is generally too soft for watches anyway). A more affordable option can also (but rarely) be found in 14 carat (about 53%) gold. The misleading term gold-filled refers to a thin (less than 5% of total weight, but thicker than gilding or gold plating) layer of gold over a core of another metal, but this is uncommon in modern watches.

Watchmakers often like to use gold because it allows them to mark up their products. The price of a gold watch will often be considerably more than the value of the material itself compared to the same watch in steel, but watchmakers can also add value through finishing — even though gold is easier to work with than a cheaper, harder metal like steel. In addition to classic yellow gold, many watch companies use red gold, pink gold, rose gold and even produce and name their own unique alloys.

For today’s chrysophilist, you’ll find several options below offering simply the warm or blingy look of gold for affordable prices, as well as several more serious investments that’ll remind you of their auriferous composition by the weight on your wrist.

Casio Vintage A168WG

Just about the cheapest gold-colored watch we can actually recommend is one of the many available digital masterpieces from Casio. Go for a gold calculator watch, a Casio World Time or analog-digital… but this is a classic iteration that even many serious watch lovers can appreciate with more genuine appreciation than irony.

Materials: Gold-toned stainless steel
Diameter: 35mm
Movement: Quartz

Q Timex 1975 Reissue

The Timex Q (or Q Timex) series that resurrects vintage quartz models from the 1970s is full of style and value. This reissue of a model from 1975 has a 38mm case and offers a look that’s hard to find in modern watches. Proudly announcing its quartz movement, this is a solid watch for a shot of fashion or as a fun gift.

Materials: Gold-toned stainless steel
Diameter: 38mm
Movement: Quartz

Seiko 5 Sports SRPE74

The absurdly high bang-for-buck Seiko 5 Sports collection is based on a rugged sport watch concept, but among the many available variations are also those in a gold-toned execution. It might not be the kind of gold watch to make you look like a high roller, but it just might be a fun and accessible bit of bling for your wrist. A rose gold variation is available in addition to this yellow gold.

Materials: Gold-toned stainless steel
Diameter: 42.5mm
Movement: Seiko 4R36 automatic

Casio G-Shock Full Metal GMWB5000GD-4

If you like the throwback vibes of a digital watch in gold, there are great choices from Timex, Nixon, Bulova and even Hamilton. But few are more exciting than the original G-Shock design from 1983, and when you see it done up in metal (gold, no less) rather than its iconic black plastic, it feels kinda meta and kinda awesome. These models also include premium features like Tough Solar, bluetooth and Multiband 6.

Materials: Rose gold ion-plated (IP) stainless steel
Diameter: 43.2mm
Movement: Casio quartz module 3459 with solar charging

Apple Watch Series 6

When the Apple Watch debuted in 2014, it also offered an Edition option in 18ct gold priced $10,000-$18,000. It’s no longer produced, but nowadays you can get gold-colored versions of the Sport in aluminum or something like this: the Series 6 in stainless steel with gold coating, and even a Milanese loop band to match.

Materials: Gold-toned stainless steel
Diameter: 38mm or 42mm
Movement: Apple Wear OS

Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto

One of the best dress watches around of course looks good in a gold finish. Hamilton really got the details and style of its Intra-Matic right, and with its curved sunburst dial and simple design, it’ll make you feel like Don Draper no matter what else you’re wearing. This simple case has a PVD gold coating and inside it houses an automatic movement.

Tissot Excellence Automatic 18K Gold

You just found probably the most affordable modern watch in solid 18ct gold around. We’re happy to say that it not only fits that criterion, but also has a great classic design, is sized nicely at 39.8mm, houses an excellent Swiss automatic movement and more. Cool, right? There are options of yellow or rose gold, black or white dials — and there’s even a quartz version for about $900 less.

Materials: 18k rose gold
Diameter: 39.8mm
Movement: ETA 2892 automatic

Cartier Tank Louis Cartier

There’s almost no more classic, recognizable and (yes) elegant watch than the Cartier Tank, and it’s at its best in this exact form: with a thin hand-wound movement and rose gold case as the Tank Louis Cartier. With a case that’s only 6.6mm thick with an in-house movement inside, this is the archetypal gold watch experience.

Materials: 18ct rose gold
Diameter: 25.5mm
Movement: Cartier 8971 MC

A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia

It’s no hyperbole that when you handle an A. Lange & Söhne watch for yourself, it’s palpably special. You’ll understand why the brand uses precious metals for its cases almost exclusively, as it just seems appropriate for something of this level of refinement. The Saxonia in pink gold and is just about the brand’s most accessible product. (Also check out the brand’s own “Honey Gold” alloy usually reserved for special editions.)

Materials: 18ct pink gold
Diameter: 37mm
Movement: A. Lange & Söhne L941.1

Omega Seamaster 300

Who says gold watches have to be formal and dressy? There are plenty of examples of gold sport watches from the Rolex Submariner to the Omega Seamaster 300, a great example with its excellent balance of moderate 41mm case size, vintage looks and, of course, rock-solid movement. (Omega’s proprietary alloy of rose gold is called “Sedna Gold,” but this particular version is classic yellow gold.)

Materials: 18ct yellow gold
Diameter: 41mm
Movement: Omega 8401 automatic

Rolex Day-Date 40 “President”

Nothing says “gold watch” like a Rolex Day-Date, otherwise known as the “President.” The Day-Date, in fact, only comes in precious metals, so there’s no mistaking its prestige even when it’s in white gold. With a full gold bracelet and that iconic fluted bezel, it screams “wealth” and is a worthy aspirational watch. It also comes in a range of configurations, including other gold alloys and dial colors such as Rolex’s own rose gold alloy called “Everose.”

Materials: 18ck yellow gold
Diameter: 40mm
Movement: Rolex 3255 automatic

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin

Conceived specifically to be produced in steel, there’s a little irony to a gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak — but never mind that, because it’s one of the most baller watches out there. With a full gold (integrated) bracelet, it costs more than double its otherwise identical counterpart in stainless steel, but at these prices who’s counting, anyway?

Materials: 18ct rose gold
Diameter: 39mm
Movement: Audemars Piguet 2121 automatic

The Marc Philipp Gemballa Marsien

I can’t help myself, but when I look at these photos of the new Marc Philipp Gemballa Marsien, I’m thinking about the legendary Paris Dakar rally where Porsche entered a few of their rare 959 models, complete with a raised suspension to be able to cope with the desert racing … and then I read in the official press release the Project Sandbox as this concept was initially called, took inspiration from that rally, so my feeling was correct.

© MARC PHILIPP GEMBALLA GmbH / Oskar Bakke & Victor Goico

This is Gemballa’s first production-ready car, do note Marc Philipp Gemballa is a separate company from Gemballa GmbH, this bespoke off-road capable supercar is a combination of a comfortable contemporary supercar and an off-road sand eating monster, a development with partners like Akrapovič,  KW Automotive, and RUF Automobile.

© MARC PHILIPP GEMBALLA GmbH / Oskar Bakke & Victor Goico

We published the early renders on this car a while ago in our ‘The return of Gemballa‘ article, but today Project Sandbox is ready for production, albeit very limited and all bespoke builds, and more importantly the car is now named Marsien, at the 27, this young entrepreneur and son of late Uwe Gemballa launched his very first production-ready supercar, starting a new era in 2021, Marc Philipp quickly realized if he wanted to build a successful company for the future and not just toss the next imitator product onto the market, he needed to come up with something very special for his clients.

© MARC PHILIPP GEMBALLA GmbH / Oskar Bakke & Victor Goico

After two years of design and perfecting the initial renders to put into production, a new concept is now introduced, in fact, we’re looking at a completely new supercar segment, a modern supercar with the comfort we’ve come to expect in this day and age, with daily driver practicality that can go off-road, at high speed, and bringing the latest technology into the mix … something only an SUV like the Lamborghini Urus or Bentley Bentayga could offer, but every customer is tempted by an SUV, they want an off-road supercar … like this Marsien.

© MARC PHILIPP GEMBALLA GmbH / Oskar Bakke & Victor Goico

At this early stage, Marc Philipp Gemballa’s new company is not ready for a new car built entirely in-house, unlike Rimac who designed, developed, and is building their Nevera from scratch with every single piece being built in their own factory, Marc Philipp is taken a well-proven, respected supercar from Porsche and turns it into his Marsien, and the all-wheel-drive Porsche 992 Turbo S is just what he needed with its state-of-the-art technology on a cutting-edge platform.

© MARC PHILIPP GEMBALLA GmbH / Oskar Bakke & Victor Goico

Only 40 units of the Marc Philipp Gemballa Marsien will be built, and while you are reading this, over 20 have already been sold, so if you want to add this ‘made in Germany’ off-road supercar to your collection you might want to act quick, the car will be available globally and has been thoroughly tested on the sand dunes of the Arabian desert as can clearly be seen in the official launch video at the end of this article.

© MARC PHILIPP GEMBALLA GmbH / Oskar Bakke & Victor Goico

From the press release: During the intense test phase in the beautiful Al Faya desert, the development team was amazed by the stunning red desert sand in combination with the sharp fossil rocks and mountain backdrops shaping the landscape of the desert making it very special and unlike any other. “We felt like as if we were in an entirely different universe,” says Marc Philipp Gemballa. The Al Faya desert located in the emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates has been famous ever since for its unique and extremely red desert sand and Mars-like environment visually. “Since it looked and felt like we were on Mars paired with the futuristic design and the vehicle’s off-road capabilities, we couldn’t think of a more fitting name for our first project.” The name ‘MARSIEN’ was born – derived from the French word ‘Martian’ or ‘from Mars’.

As we would expect, the body for this Marsien is made entirely from lightweight but strong carbon fiber and comes from the same German company that produces carbon fiber parts as an OEM to leading supercar manufacturers, but also to Formula One teams, for the sleek design Marc Philipp turned to Porsche aficionado Alan Derosier, known for his beautiful Porsche 908 design study while the bespoke LED taillights have been developed together with GERG Lighthouse.

© MARC PHILIPP GEMBALLA GmbH / Oskar Bakke & Victor Goico

The German-based technical service provider FAKT is currently working on road homologation for the Marc Philipp Gemballa Marsien, together with Gemballa’s technical team they are working on getting the Marsien street-legal in Europe, including the more stringent Switzerland, but also for the Middle-East, probably one of their biggest market. The Marsien will also be imported into the United States of America … and if possible into any other market in the world later on.

The car in these photos is the first completed car from Marc Philipp Gemballa, it’s the official launch vehicle, and it’s finished in a stunning, triple-layer pearl metallic white with bespoke metallic flakes, as this is an off-road supercar, they also applied a though ceramic coat for added protection to this expensive paint job, on customer cars the color palette is vast, a state-of-the-art certified paint shop will be able to create the exact shade and finish the future owner requests, or you can opt for an exposed carbon fiber body … now that would be my choice, to be honest.

The Marsien comes with a special engine upgrade POWERED BY RUF, and while the six-cylinder boxer engine is still compliant with EOR 6 emissions, power output is raised to more than 750 hp … but it gets even better, RUF offers a Stage II power upgrade with modified VTG turbochargers and different EVU mapping that bumps power to 830 hp, in this case, you’ll also need some revised PDK transmission settings to cope with that much power.

To ensure the Marsien was as capable on the road as off the road, Marc Philipp together with KW Automotive developed a new double-wishbone front suspension with solid piston damper technology with intelligent active dampers and adjustable ride height, there is an electronically controlled hydraulic lift system that can raise the Marsien from normal road level up to a ground clearance of 250 mm!

The driver of the Marsien has several driving modes at his, or her disposal through the knob on the steering wheel, in addition to the standard Porsche modes, this Gemballa comes with bespoke off-road modes like gravel, mud, sand, and even snow … also note the entire underbody of the Marsien is protected from debris by a solid aluminum guard plate.

© MARC PHILIPP GEMBALLA GmbH / Oskar Bakke & Victor Goico

The MARSIEN is delivered with two different, bespoke forged aluminum wheel sets, both with track-inspired center locking bolts, the first set comes with Michelin Ultra High Performance (UHP) tires for road use, while the second set is shod with All-Terrain tires for off-road use. If you really want to go crazy on the sand, there is the option of a Reiger Suspension rally-spec off-road dampers further enhancing the suspension travel and increasing the ground clearance to a fixed off-road ride height.

The interior is another fine balance between form and function, fitted with either a leather or an Alcantara upholstery, the overall look and feel is inspired by the magnificent Porsche Carrera GT, with a ‘flying’ carbon fiber central console and custom ‘ribbons’ to pull the door shut. There are handstitched Gemballa logos on the headrests, and the logo is also embedded on the armrest.

Also note there is a special plaque fitted to the interior with the serial number of that specific car, one of only 40, with the 10 ‘Launch Edition’ models being sold out long ago, only a handful of the 40 units are still available while production of the Marsien will start in late 2021, each with a starting price of €495,000 before taxes (about US$586,000), and you’ll have to add duties, shipping, custom requests or options … and your base, that Porsche 992 Turbo S … yes, that price tag of almost $600,000 is just for the conversion alone … exclusivity doesn’t come cheap.

Commune With Nature At The San Simon Cabins in Mexico

The San Simon Cabins in Valle de Bravo sits 140 kilometers to the west of Mexico City. Nestled amongst tall, lush trees, it offers a great place for solitude but with the comforts of luxury living.

Designed by Mexican architecture studio Weber Arquitectos, the cabins consist of five individual structures distributed in a vast area of 5,000m2 of land. It sits 20 minutes away from the lake in Valle de Bravo, State of Mexico. The cabins, with their grey volcanic stone structure, sit on gaps formed by the trees. Thus, lessening their structural impact on the existing vegetation. Yet they blend seamlessly with their topography despite their modern architecture.

The San Simon Cabins include guest houses, the main lodge, and a recreational building There is the main cabin as well as a social cabin in a rectangular design and clad in volcanic stone. Each cabin has its own terrace and glass windows of different sizes fronted with lattice screens.

Meanwhile, three of the guest cabins have a slanted roof and are raised on the ground via a plinth created by rectangular blocks of volcanic stone. Two of the cabins are standalone structures and each has a bedroom and bathroom. The other is a double-unit with a bedroom connected to either side of the shared bathroom in the building center.

Inside, the San Simon Cabins boasts both modern and contemporary furnishings made of wood and stone. There are spacious kitchens, a massive shelving unit, a circular jacuzzi, a round fire pit, and bathrooms with green vegetation. The cabins definitely offer an idyllic and comfortable escape into nature.

The Insane Porsche 911 Off-Roader of Your Dreams Has Arrived

Gemballa is one of the iconic names in custom Porsches. Famed tuner Uwe Gemballa’s son Marc Philipp Gemballa’s company, aptly named Marc Philipp Gemballa, has just unveiled its bonkers super limited-edition Porsche 959-inspired off-road 911, the Marsien, which the company says is derived from the French word for Martian.

The Marsien base vehicle is the 992 generation Porsche 911 Turbo S. Broad changes include a taller ride height and custom carbon fiber bodywork with the huge 959-esque rear wing. The engine is the Turbo S flat-six tuned by another iconic Porsche tuner, RUF, up to 750 horsepower — 110 hp more than the stock Turbo S — and 685 lb-ft of torque in a base version or 830 hp in top-spec. The Marsien also uses an Akrapovic titanium exhaust system.

Mods for off-roading on the Marisen include a desert-ready air filter, a new double-wishbone front suspension and a hydraulic system that can lift the car to a little more than 9.8 inches of ground clearance, which is higher than a Toyota 4Runner. An off-road package can add special rally-spec dampers and even more ground clearance, though by selecting that, you lose the adjustable ride height.

off road 911

Oskar Bakke

off road 911

Marc Philipp Gemballa

The Marsien comes with two sets of wheels, one fitted to road tires and another fitted to all-terrain tires. In on-road mode, Marc Philipp Gemballa says the Marisen will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds — not quite the 2.2 seconds the standard Turbo S achieved in Car and Driver testing but still blistering — and hit a top speed of 205 mph.

How much will the Marsien cost? A lot. Conversions start at €495,000, about $585,000 at the present exchange rate, excluding taxes and shipping. And the company doesn’t include the Porsche 911 Turbo S itself, which starts at $207,000. Marc Philipp Gemballa plans to build 40 Marsiens. More than half the slots have already been filled. The company will begin production later this year.

If you like the idea of an off-road 911 but don’t need the full bore Marsien treatment, it looks like Porsche is testing its own off-road 911 for possible future release.

Should You Buy Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack for Your iPhone 12?

This week, Apple announced the MagSafe Battery Pack, which is its first portable battery that works with MagSafe — it magnetically sticks to the back of your iPhone 12 and gives it extra power throughout the day. The problem is that it costs $99 and you can buy similar alternatives, like the Mophie Snap+ Juice Pack Mini ($50) or the Belkin Magnetic Wireless Power Bank 2.5K ($50), for significantly cheaper.

But Apple is known for making its accessories work better within its ecosystem. Its line of MagSafe wireless chargers are the only ones that can fast-charge an iPhone 12 at 15-watts, while all other wireless chargers charge an iPhone 12 at a max of 7.5-watts. And it has given some similar powers to its first-party MagSafe Battery Pack. The MagSafe Battery Pack has three big advantages over those cheaper third-party alternatives. Whether that makes it worth the extra cost is up to you.

First, the MagSafe Battery Pack charges via Lightning. This means that you can use the same charging cable with your iPhone 12 and your portable battery. You can also stick the MagSafe Battery Pack to the back of your iPhone 12, plug the Lightning cable into either device and it’ll charge both. (It will fully charge the iPhone 12 first, then charge the MagSafe Battery Pack).

Second, when the MagSafe Battery Pack is plugged into the wall, it effectively turns into a turn MagSafe wireless charger. This means that it can fast-charge any iPhone 12 at 15-watts (aside from the mini, which maxes out at 12 watts), which is twice as fast as non-MagSafe wireless chargers.

Finally, you can easily tell the battery life of the MagSafe Battery Pack because, when connected to your iPhone 12, its battery life can be seen from the Lock Screen and from the Batteries widget. If you’ve ever used a portable battery before, you’ll know that it’s not always that easy to tell how much juice it has left. But Apple has made that easy with the MagSafe Battery Pack.

At the time of writing, Apple has not said what the exact capacity of the MagSafe Battery Pack actually is, though it looks to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000mAh based on its size and other chargers. If it is actually larger, that could be another key advantage over its much-cheaper competitors.

The MagSafe Battery Pack is available for preorder right now and will start shipping next week. It will work with the entire iPhone 12 family.

Zero Motorcycles Has a Cool New Electric Commuter Bike

Zero Motorcycles unveiled its new affordable electric urban commuter bike for 2022, the FXE. The company collaborated with California-based Huge Design on the bike, which took inspiration from consumer electronics industrial design and emphasizes the rider user interface and ergonomic touchpoints. Zero Motorcycles is calling it the “motorcycle of tomorrow, available today — even if, aesthetically, “tomorrow” looks like a slightly more sophisticated edition of the FXS that was in the lineup yesterday.

Powering the FXE is Zero Motorcycles’s Z-Force 75.5 air-cooled brushless motor, which puts out 46 horsepower and 78 lb-ft of torque. If that output doesn’t sound bountiful, remember this bike weighs less than 300 pounds. The brand says its 7.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack can provide up to 100 miles of range in city riding, twice as much as the departing FXS.

The FXE also gets some of the tech upgrades found in Zero Motorcycles’s SR/F. The bike uses a five-inch TFT display, a more refined version of LCD optimized for outdoor use. The FXE also has Zero Motorcycles’s proprietary Cypher II OS and bluetooth connectivity, which allows the rider to control things like torque, top speed and battery management through the Zero Motorcycles smartphone app.

Zero Motorcycles will start the FXE at $11,795, a bit of a hike over the $9,945 FXS. The company is taking pre-orders on the website right now with a $500 deposit. The FXE will debut on July 16 at Sonoma Raceway and arrive at dealers later this month.

This Is the Seiko 5 Watch That Fans Designed

Sixteen million votes, five components, one affordable Seiko watch.

The Seiko 5 Sports watch before you is the latest variation to join the impressively broad and constantly growing collection. It fits right in aesthetically among the multitudinous options but has a story to set it apart: this is the watch that was designed by a fan and received the most “likes” in an online campaign.

From late 2020 into early 2021, Seiko ran the Custom Watch Beatmaker campaign in which fans could mix and match options online to create their own design. Rather than a watch customizer in which you could then buy your creation, however, it works by allowing people to view all the other configurations fans had made and vote on your favorite. Just to make it more fun, each design was also paired to one of 32 original songs created by up-and-coming artists.

Based upon the collection’s excellent flagship model — which features a 42mm case and 4R36 automatic movement — the elements available for fans to work with were limited. Combining options of 6 bezel inserts, 11 dials, 7 hand colors, 4 case finishes and 8 bands leads to a lot of possibilities, however, and more than 48,000 configurations were submitted. From more than 16,000,000 votes cast, the winning watch with its steel case, red and blue bezel and gold-toned dial got over half the votes, with more than 8,500,000. The gold dial recalls older Seiko 5 models and perhaps shows some nostalgia for those salad days of ultra-cheap Seikos.

Watch companies offering customizing options through the likes of an online configurator has been a hot topic within the industry, but is still relatively rare and slow to evolve — though some companies are leading the way. Could Seiko be floating the concept of made-to-order Seiko 5 Sports watches similar to personally configured sneakers? Seiko likely has the resources to do it, but just because something like that is possible and would be popular doesn’t mean it’s good branding. For now, the brand probably garners a lot more excitement and attention with these campaigns and limited editions.

The SRPH19 is limited in production and only 2,021 of the more than 8 million voters will be able to buy one. It’ll be available from Seiko’s site online starting in September 2021 for the same price as non limited models at $295.

Sure, there are more popular canvas sneakers out there, but Novesta’s Star Masters are an affordable option that don’t look like the rest. They’re a monochrome combination of beige and ecru, each made in the company’s Slovakia factory.

Yacht Master

Pacifico Optical

Although Pacifico Optical likens these to something you should wear on a yacht, the name only really means one two things: they’re summery and super durable. The handcrafted frames are made of long-lasting acetate and the lenses are shatterproof.

Oversized Square Ring

Nialaya Jewelry

Nialaya Jewelry’s Oversized Square Ring is the punctuation mark on an already polished outfit. Gold-plated steel and Tiger Eye stone meet for something that looks quite luxurious, especially for a sub-$100 ring.

It’s Damn Hot, So Here’s What You Need to Know About Coolers

We’re smack dab in the middle of July, which means you’re either shopping for a new cooler or already daydreaming about all the goodies going into the one you have for your next big trip to the beach or the woods. Either way, it pays to know your stuff when it comes to cooler design, cooler size and prepping and packing your cooler properly.

So before you shop our buying guide or start stocking up on the finest meats and cheeses — and beer, of course — check out these quick and handy FAQs.

What Is a Rotomolded Cooler?

There’s a reason so many of the coolers created today are tougher, heavier and more expensive than the Igloo Playmate you may have carried around in years past. The update is primarily due to a manufacturing process called rotational molding, or more commonly, rotomolding.

In rotomolding, a heated mold is filled with powdered plastic material. The mold rotates on two axes as it heats the plastic until it is completely melted and fills every cavity within the hollow mold. The constant rotation helps the plastic resin spread evenly and consistently throughout. The result is a single-piece plastic cast of the desired shape that’s free of any imperfections. Rotomolding contributes to all of the traits that represent the current level of quality in today’s coolers, most importantly rugged durability and superior ice retention.

How Do I Pick the Right Cooler Size?

Hmm… 20-, 30-, 40-quart — knowing what each size cooler can hold can be tricky. Some brands (ahem, Yeti) don’t provide specific volume specs either, choosing instead to measure space by how many cans you can stash inside.

While the shape makes a difference, especially with soft-sided coolers, here’s what we tended to see when testing coolers for our buying guide. A 70-quart size tends to be the most family-friendly, and the smaller soft-sided coolers are perhaps better for a tailgate or drinks for a group. Keep in mind: the larger the cooler, the heavier it will be, especially when filled with food and drink — so a partner in hefting, ideally one of similar height, never hurts. Here’s what we gathered as general guidelines after our research. Most of the brands measure the capacity at a two-to-one ratio, meaning two parts ice, one part can, but some don’t. So take measurements with a grain of salt.

20 Quart: holds roughly 16 cans or 20 pounds of ice
35 Quart: holds roughly 21 cans or 26 pounds of ice
50 Quart: holds roughly 35 cans or 43 pounds of ice; ideal for two people for a few days
75 Quart: holds roughly 57 cans or 70 pounds of ice; ideal for two people for a weeklong trip, or a family weekend trip.

How Do I Get the Most Out of My Cooler?

To max out of your cooler’s capabilities, make sure to pre-chill it for 24 hours before you pack it up and head out. Pre-chilling involves adding ice to your cooler to bring the internal temperature of the cooler down. When you’re ready to pack the cooler the following day, dump the ice you added for pre-chill and add new ice to the cooler. The new ice will stay frozen longer and provide extended performance in the realm of cold retention.

What’s the Best Way to Pack My Cooler?

The truth is, you can pack the coolers in our guide in all kinds of configurations and get far better results than you can with an old-school cooler. But to get the best ice retention possible — with any cooler — keep the following tips and tricks in mind.

Line the bottom of your cooler with ice. Putting a layer of ice on the bottom of your cooler will keep the ice colder longer and also keeps it away from the least-insulated part of the cooler, the lid.

Fill your cooler with solid blocks of ice if possible. Because they have less overall surface area, solid blocks of ice stay frozen longer than ice cubes do.

Fill the gaps with ice cubes. Pour a bag’s worth of ice cubes on top of your ice blocks to fill any gaps or holes.

Add your food, beer or both. Lay out your supplies in a manner that makes sense. In other words, don’t just toss everything in. Keep your morning meals on one side and your evening meals on the other side. This will ensure that you spend minimal time with the cooler open (which allows hot air inside and reduces ice retention).

Fill the rest of the cooler with ice cubes or ice packs. Top off with some additional ice and you’re good to go. To keep it chilled as long as possible, only open the cooler when absolutely necessary.

Rhythm Exports Australian Surf-Inspired Essentials at Affordable Prices

Surely for New Yorkers there’s at least one home-grown surf/swim brand that comes to mind. (Hint: Pilgrim and Saturdays.) For those in coastal California, perhaps that’s Outerknown or Mollusk. For surfers in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast of Australia, Rhythm rings a bell — but the nearly 20-year-old brand is much more than a boardshort shop on the beach.

Since its inception in 2003 by Jamal Gray and prolific shaper/surfer Neal Purchase Jr., Rhythm has expanded into over 500 retail locations in Australia, the U.S., Canada and Europe, opened two brick-and-mortars of their own in Broad Beach and Burleigh Heads, and enlisted a roster of surfers, longboarders, musicians and more as “advocates” for the brand. This list alone is impressive. But more so has been Rhythm’s consistent quality, eye for what’s in, and commitment to bettering their manufacturing processes.

rhythm store interior

Rhythm.

Rhythm’s sustainability pledge includes plans for “expanding the use of Econyl and Repreve in our Swimwear collections, moving towards using organic cotton or natural fibres for all of our t-shirts, and using recycled polyester for our Beach Shorts and Trunks.”

But all of these endeavors aren’t coming at the cost of the consumer – or the quality of the products on offer. (People seem to have this preconceived notion that conscious clothing can’t possibly be as good. News flash: it usually is!) Rhythm balances aesthetics and affordability, resulting in clothes consumers want to wear at prices they can understand. Instead of $150+ sweatshirts and shirts, Rhythm’s run for around $70; T-shirts go for between $27 and $36; shorts exactly $50; polos (long- or short-sleeve) either $40 or $50.

Beyond their Beach Shorts (35-percent recycled polyester, 38-percent polyester, 21-percent cotton, 6-percent spandex), which can be worn in our out of water, few of their core products are made from materials other than 100-percent cotton. (There is the occasional cotton terry or linen-cotton blend, however.) Their Linen Jam shorts are popular, sit at just the right spot on your thigh, and wear better as they’re broken in. Other items seem like they’ve been through it even before the first wear. But, that’s part of the look: sun-faded, sand- and salt-blasted.

rhythm store interior surf boards lined up against the wall and framed picture of a surfer

Rhythm.

Rhythm’s successes, though, aren’t simply a result of consumers in landlocked locales copying surf styles. They’re the result of the company’s dedication to surf, surfers and the industry’s subsidiaries: music, craft and alternative culture.

In a time when heritage is dreamt up in marketing think tanks, and rich guys fabricate brands to milk the teat of a sudden detour of surf culture, it’s refreshing that a gaggle of gents from the Gold Coast are carving out a little slice of the surf retail pie for themselves. Authenticity still, thankfully, is the last of the ingredients of success that can’t be backdated,” surf oracle Stab Magazine wrote about Rhythm back in 2016.

And now, in 2021, there’s no sign of the brand “selling out.” In fact, those behind it are hitting their stride (again), and every collection has standout pieces aplenty. And although the company’s surf clips have more snippets dedicated to showing off new releases — watch their newest one, Dune Dogs, here — the bulk of each remains dedicated to surfers dueling daunting waves.
