Aston Martin V12 Heritage Twins: The Return of the V12 Zagato

Who said that a great success can’t be repeated? In this case we are talking about something special that won Villa d’Este Concourse of elegance in 2011, raced at Nürburgring 24h race and had been truly appreciated by collectors from all around the world. We are talking about the awarded Aston V12 Zagato that in 2020, marking the celebrations of Zagato’s centenary, came back in the form of a limited production of cars called Aston Martin V12 Heritage Twins.

As the name says “the car” is in reality a “two cars package” sold at £1.75 million as a bundle that include a revised coupe plus an inedited speedster version of the original V12 Zagato born in 2011 to celebrate a fifty-year partnership since the DB4 GT Zagato. This time the manufacturing line won’t be based in Gaydon at AM headquarter but instead it will be established at the Warwick-based manufacturer R-Reforged, part of AF racing Group, under Aston Martin license.

19 units of each model will be produced and both will include some major upgrades compared to the 2011 version: like the most recent version of the NA 5.9-liter 48-valve engine that delivers 600 hp (85 more
the original), a full carbon fibre body, active aerodynamics with a retractable rear spoiler that improves stability at high speeds and a set of 19″ single nut alloy rims made ad hoc by APP Tech.

If that’s not enough, the purchase experience offers also a personalized gift package at the time of order with the possibility to establish every detail of their Aston Martin Vantage V12 Zagato Heritage TWINS. The buyers will be offered also the possibility to witness the production of their cars at the new plant in Warwick, where a team of highly specialized personnel workers who fuse traditional and modern production techniques: from hand-made finishes with Bridge of Weir leather to additive manufacturing.

GTspirit had been invited to ZAGATO Milan atelier to see in person the first two prototype examples
with the coupe configured in Platino Acanto and the Speedster in Oro angelica (Gold). Both cars
will later become part of the Zagato private collection.

Here’s How To Stay Cool at Night in Summer

It’s hot, it’s a bit stuffy, air doesn’t circulate very well, you sweat a lot. I’m not talking about the jungle, I’m talking about your bedroom in the summer. We’ve seen record temps across the nation and while that might make grilling out and going to the beach fun, that heat is not welcome is in the bedroom when you’re trying to sleep. With this in mind, we’ve rounded up all of our favorite items to stay cool at night in your bedroom this summer.

Air Conditioning

For a lot of the country, central AC is a given in every home. However, if you live in an urban apartment or a city that doesn’t get hot that often, you may be fending for yourself when the dog days of summer come around. The obvious solution (and in many cases, only solution) is to install a window AC unit. These are our top picks.

Tower Fans

Let’s face it, air conditioning is expensive. If you don’t want to break the bank on AC or just want something to circulate the air, a tower fan is your best bet. Give the palm leaves a rest and buy one of the most affordable cooling devices out there.

Pillows

Often overlooked when deciding how to set up the perfect bedding situation, the pillow is sadly something we could all probably pay a bit more attention to. Not only do you not want to sleep on an uncomfortable pillow but you also don’t want it to leave your face all sweaty and sticky all throughout the night. These are our favorite pillows to keep you cool.

Sheets

As the main piece of bedding you have contact with you at night, you want to be sure that you pick out the right sheets to keep you cool when the summer heat rises. Is there anything worse than waking up covered in sweat? We’re not sure there is. These are the best sheets for cutting down on the swamp.

Mattresses

Believe it or not, the mattress beneath your sheets makes a huge difference when it comes to keeping you cool on a nightly basis. You spend a third of your life on this thing, so you want to make sure it is optimized for your specific sleep habits.

The Best Camp Collar Shirts for Every Occasion

By now you’ve probably seen one of these shirts on someone else — stylish gents of yesteryear, celebrities walking red carpets, and actors in TV series or movies. What we call them remains unclear, though. Whether Cuban, camp, revere, lounge or spread, all of these mean the same thing: a short-sleeve button-up shirt with a collar that lays flat against your chest, creating an open “V” and mini lapels.

They’re a breezy, summer essential; perfect for trips to sunnier spots around the world. But they work well in other settings, too. In fact, from the time warm weather arrive until it fades into fall, there may not be a more versatile top. Available in a variety of materials, crops, and colors, and with or without graphics or patterning, there’s surely one that catches your eye. And don’t avoid them because you’re shy about showing off your chest. These look vastly different than V-neck T-shirts do.

The style doesn’t derive from V-neck T-shirts either. We lead with Cuban (instead of camp, revere, lounge or spread) as an homage to the style’s origins — at least here in the US. Originally known as a Guayabera — there’s one on this list, by the way — the shirt shifted names as Cuban immigrants moved stateside from the mid-1950s on. (James Bond donned a pink one in the 1965’s Thunderball.) There’s evidence of spread collar rayon shirts as early as the 1930s, but those were wider, most commonly long-sleeved and, at the time, deemed sportswear — a descriptor for most things men weren’t supposed to wear to work.

Modern renditions, I’d argue, don’t reference the spearpoint collar styles of the 1930’s or 1940’s but rather the short, more compact collars seen on Guayaberas. Some iterations have even smaller collars, a drastic departure from US-born “sport shirts.”

As far as fit goes, I’d lobby for buying true to your usual size. If Hedi Slimane — the enigmatic designer behind collections by Dior Homme, YSL, and Celine — were styling you, he’d probably size the shirt up and pair it with skinnier pants. Whether you trust me or him doesn’t matter. How you wear it is truly up to you. The oversized look works — back then neither Guayaberas nor “sport shirts” were made-to-measure — and leaves a bit more room for air. But most are breathable as is, especially if they’re constructed from linen, cotton or rayon.

My final word of advice? Don’t go running for a shirt adorned with a loud Hawaiian print. Let retirees revel in their bliss, college students in their inexperience, and get an option from this list instead. Anywhere you’d wear your Hawaiian shirt, you can wear one of these.

Camp-Collar Printed Woven Shirt

Neighborhood

Neighborhood’s 100-percent rayon rendition references bowling shirts, mixing cream colors and a mirrored script logo on the chest.

Poplin Summer Shirt

Universal Works

Four pockets cover the front of Universal Works’ made-in-Portugal, 100-percent Poplin shirt.

Short-Sleeve Camp-Collar Harbor Shirt

The shirt itself is simple, but two button closure pockets add interest.

Irish Linen Camp Collar Short Sleeve Shirt

Todd Snyder

Todd Snyder constructs this shirt from fabric made by Ireland’s Baird McNutt, a company that’s been in the linen business for over 100 years.

Autonomous Lightning Fist Vacation Shirt

Edwin’s… Autonomous Lightning Fist shirt features embroidered Japanese text, a tiny fist and bolts of lightning atop soft blue and white Chambray.

Camp-Collar Linen Shirt

De Bonne Facture

Another day, another linen shirt. All kidding aside, you can’t go wrong with this combination: camp collars and comfortable linen fabric.

The Tonga Linen Shirt

Dandy Del Mar

The ultimate getaway garb. Dandy Del Mar’s Tonga Linen shirt in the Alhambra Check comes with Pearl buttons and pre-distressed texture.

Camp-Collar Embroidered Cotton-Poplin Shirt

Portugese Flannel

Camp-Collar shirts are leisure-leaning as is. Adding a tropical pattern — like these palm trees — emphasizes the aura.

Metallic Stripe Camp Collar Shirt

Gitman Vintage

Although the Gitman family has been manufacturing shirts since the early 20th century, the Gitman Vintage sub-label launched in 2009. And they’ve been cranking out hits — like this option here — since.

Breeze Cotton Linen Camp Shirt

Buck Mason

A-ha! Got ya. There are in fact long-sleeve camp-collar shirts. Buck Mason’s is made from a cotton-linen blend in a color way they call Taupe/Prairie Stripe.

Psychedelic Check Shirt

Don’t stare at it for too long. Stüssy’s shirt isn’t an optical illusion but it feels like one. Wear it on your next trip. (Get it?)

Linen-Blend Camp-Collar Shirt

Abercrombie

Just because there are crazy patterned iterations out there doesn’t mean you need one, too. Get something simple if that’s what you’re into. Try Abercrombie’s linen-blend option. It comes in several colors and at a fraction of the cost of others on this list.

Rainbow Vacation Shirt

Portugese Flannel

Portugese Flannel’s Rainbow Vacation shirt features a dozen rainbows in varying shades of yellow, orange and red. It’s the sunset reimagined as ready-to-wear.

Guayabera Shirt

Pedro and Tailor

Here’s the Guayabera. I told you there’d be one on this list. There are four button closure pockets, a collar with two tiny lapels and price that won’t wound your wallet.

Jacquard-Striped Linen-Chambray Shirt

India-born label Harago blends ancient craftsmanship with new silhouettes. This one’s certainly more ’50s-leaning than others, but dropped shoulders, flap pockets and oversized stripes center it in today’s style landscape.

Alternate Cuban-Collar Organic Cotton-Blend Shirt

Again, I told you it’s OK to seek out simpler, patternless tops. Albam’s fits the bill, but goes beyond, too. It’s made from certified organic cotton that uses significantly less resources during the course of its production.

Patchwork Check Road Shirt

Universal Works

There are lots of luxury labels making a killing off repurposing old quilts and other patchwork. Universal Works’ version might be the “value brand” attempt at the look, but it’s still a damn good garment nonetheless. Cut from 100-percent cotton, it’s green, brown, tan, sand and pink.

Leopard Print Vacation Shirt

Here’s an over-the-top option from a brand other than YSL or AllSaints, who also make animal print camp-collar shirts. Other’s choice of pattern is more pronounced, making it less animal skin and more graphic.

Solid Selvage Short Sleeve Shirt

Marine Layer

Slub yarn fabric gives this Marine Layer shirt a vintage look, and a locker loop and front pocket give it a casual feel.

Short Sleeve Tour Shirt

Stan Ray — the same company making those popular painter pants — turned out this Tour Shirt, a black cuban collar top with a pattern that fuses peace signs and cartoon flowers.

Bandana Vacation Shirt

Sure, the Paisley bandana print on this Flagstuff shirt is cool, but look closer. At the bottom, the words “UP TO NO GOOD” are screen-printed on.

Poppy Shirt

Stüssy seems keen on tricking your eyes with every one of its shirts. This one makes it seem like the flowers are fleeting, growing smaller as they creep up toward the neck. (Upon further inspection, they are.)

Camp Shirt

Allbirds, the same company responsible for the simple wool running shoes you see everywhere, also makes apparel. Their Camp Shirt is cut from a blend of hemp, tencel and spandex, rendering it breathable and soft to the touch.

Camp-Collar Printed Cotton Shirt

Here’s a shirt with not just one pattern but two! Mr P. mixes flowers and stripes for its camp-collar shirt, which was silk-screen printed by Ratti in the Italian province of Como.

Stripe Chambray Camp Shirt

Hamilton Shirt Co.

Hand-cut and -sewn in Houston, Texas, Hamilton Shirt Co.’s simple striped Chambray shirt comes cropped with a straight hem.

Celebrate the premiere of Space Jam: A New Legacy with Nike’s LeBron 8 Space Jam

After close to 25 years since Michael Jordan starred alongside the Looney Tunes crew in Space Jam, the sequel is finally here. This time, instead of the so-called “GOAT” (greatest of all time), we have Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James in the lead. Nike commemorates the premiere of the movie with an exclusive capsule. Among these is the LeBron 8 Space Jam basketball shoes.

The colorway of these kicks is predominantly black but also sports accents in various colors. A dark upper uses nubuck and patent leather with a mix of synthetic materials. Given that it’s a tie-in with Space Jam: A New Legacy, there are elements themed around the film.

Two overlays feature a glossy black finish with an iridescent effect at certain angles. These boast orange outlines along with the Nike Swoosh logo wrapping from the lateral side of the quarter. The brand emblem in black can be found on the medial section of the toe box.

Another set of overlays on the midfoot and heel of the LeBron 8 Space Jam come with a printed graphics of circuitry. If you stare at the patterns closely, there are silhouettes of a basketball and other characters. The Flywire branding is then printed on the medial overlays.

Embossed images of Lebron James and Bugs Bunny about to slam it home are on the heel counters as well. Two pairs of eyestays one in yellow and another in orange add contrast to the black laces. The mesh tongue ends with the “Tune Squad” badge

Nike’s $200 LeBron 8 Space Jam sits on court-ready Max Air 360 unit for the midsole and a glow-in-the-dark outsole. As for Space Jam: A New Legacy, critics are calling it a flop as of this writing. Perhaps merchandise sales will paint a different story.

Is the Snoo Worth the Spend?

Anyone that has had a kid in the past five years will have come across the SNOO from The Happiest Baby. It’s a smart crib for your newborn that acts as a responsive soother to calm the cries of your sleeping baby. It’s divided new parents into old and new ways of thinking about newborn care. Do you let technology soothe your child while you regain precious hours of sleep or do you soothe the baby the same way humans have done for millenia? It’s a fair question; we tested one for 5 months to find out.

Price: $1,495

SHOP NOW

What’s Good

Back to sleep: This is it. This is the reason you purchased the SNOO. If your baby accepts the SNOO as their robot rocker then you’ve gained countless hours of sleep and brain cells in not having to put your baby back to sleep in the middle of the night. Now this doesn’t mean that the SNOO will soothe your child back to sleep every time they wake up, you will have to pick your baby up and do the hard work a lot, but the SNOO is for the moments when the baby just needs a light touch or motion to go back to sleep. In the 5 months that we used the SNOO the motion of the SNOO probably saved us from picking up our daughter about 100 times. In the later months during the sleep regressions and teething the soothing really came in handy for those tough nights.

Joe Tornatzky

It looks the part: This one is easy. The SNOO crib looks and feels great. It has a nice modern Danish design that looks great anywhere you put it. It feels sturdy and all the components work flawlessly. With the high entry cost of this product this should be expected, but it’s worth mentioning.

Wait for it… the price?: Once you’re beyond the immediate sticker shock, you can make a case that the price is more than fair. First, there is an option to rent the SNOO for $125 a month. For folks who are unsure whether the SNOO will work for their kid or are only planning on having one child, this is a great option. If your kid doesn’t take to the SNOO, you’re only out a couple hundred dollars and you can ship it right back. Second, if you buy the SNOO you can either re-sell the SNOO on Facebook Marketplace for a good price or use it again if you have another kid. But at the end of the day, getting back an hour or two of sleep every night for 6 months is genuinely priceless.

Pro: The SNOO app does a great job at tracking every sleep session your baby has in the crib. This is helpful for new parents to not only look at that last night of sleep but also look at the emerging trends and developments of your babies sleeping habits. Babies are constantly changing, so having this data is immensely helpful in addressing newborn sleep. Also, when your baby finally has a long stretch of sleep or sleeps through the night you can post your flex on Reddit’s r/SnooLife. I found this annoying when our baby wasn’t sleeping very well and we questioned all of our tactics, but a couple months down the line I totally understand the pure joy of telling everyone your baby slept through the night. New parents reading this, it will happen.

      What’s Not as Good

Roll of the dice: You will just not know if your baby will accept the SNOO until you try it in real life. Sometimes it takes a couple weeks for the kid to start to enjoy the constant movement of the SNOO. So there’s a couple week window where the anxiety is high and you question your (hefty) purchase. Thankfully our kid accepted the SNOO after her second week. During those first few weeks we just used the SNOO as a regular bassinet. This is why the rental pricing makes the most sense to us, because if we ultimately decided not to use the SNOO we could just ship it back and only be out a couple hundred dollars.

White noise: When you first start using the SNOO the first thing you will notice is the sound of the white noise. The noises are based on the different levels of soothing within the SNOO system. The higher the soothing level, the more motion and sound the SNOO puts out. So when you first hear the white noise it’s fairly traumatizing. It kinda sounds like Darth Vader snoring four different ways, and first time parents just getting used to the sounds of their own newborn may find that a little disturbing. The shock only lasts a couple of days, and you get used to it, but we ended up using a regular white noise machine in addition to setting the SNOO to a maximum of level two anyway. The white noise ultimately ended up being a non-issue for us down the road.

      snoo

      Joe Tornatzky

          What’s Just Not Good

Unintentional nightlight: The button on the outside of the crib is strangely bright. SNOO, why the hell would you put a bright button light on the side of the crib? Not everyone has a humongous master bedroom. The exterior button light lit up a good portion of our small Brooklyn apartment bedroom. We ended up taking some black tape and covering the button light. These are the things a new parent does when they are trying to fix all the light leaks and creaky noises in their apartment.

The art of the swaddle: The most essential part of the SNOO crib is the swaddle that is clipped into the bed. The idea being that you place your child into the swaddle, zip them up and then they stay on their backs in one position throughout the night while the SNOO motion soothes them to sleep. This is all great in theory, but getting a drowsy baby into the SNOO swaddle and zipping up of that damn zipper is literally like the final challenge on survivor. Every movement becomes calculated in an effort to keep your baby drowsy while you lock them into the swaddle. If you fail, the process of rocking your baby to a state of drowsiness and attempting to swaddle in SNOO starts again. Nobody really prepares you for how hard this can be. I challenge the engineers at SNOO to come up with a better way to do this. It freaking sucks during the first couple months and eventually gets easier over time if your baby learns to sleep on their own in which you can zip them up in the crib awake, not sleepy.

          snoo

          Joe Tornatzky

The box it came in: Straight up, the worst part about the SNOO is the box it comes in. As someone that had to drag this box up to our third floor walk up apartment in Brooklyn, and then magically find a place to store it, I can tell you I have a deep-seated resentment for it. The SNOO people say you can fold up the box and put it under your bed, but you’ll need a pretty tall bed with nothing else under it to do so.

            Verdict

It’s totally worth every penny to use the rental pricing and try it out. If your kid accepts the SNOO and you can save yourself, especially moms, a couple hours of sleep a night, you have won. That benefit of the SNOO, if it works for you, is worth everything. Also, If you can drown out the sounds of the your older generation parents and grandparents telling you that SNOO is too much, then you’ve really made it to #SNOOlife.

Aston Martin Valhalla, ready for production

The Aston Martin Valhalla concept was introduced at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, intended to become Aston Martin’s hybrid supercar with an in-house developed V6 engine coupled to multiple electric motors, and while the production of the 150 units has been postponed a few times, as late as 2023, another blow came when rumors surfaced Aston Martin wouldn’t be able to continue the development of their bespoke V6 engine, but instead would turn to a Mercedes AMG sourced V8 for their $3,000,000 Valhalla supercar.

Just about every car manufacturer out there is talking about electrification or at least hybridization, and that’s what Aston Martin’s Project Horizon is all about, the transition from internal combustion engines to hybrid, which will lead to full electrification later on, and not only will the Valhalla be a high-power hybrid, but it will also be Aston Martin’s first mid-engined supercar, a move away from ultra-luxury GT cars they are famous for globally today.

The Aston Martin Valhalla is a showcase of technology, with Lawrence Stroll as Executive Chairman and the return of Aston Martin in Formula One racing, it shouldn’t come as a surprise the Valhalla’s chassis, aerodynamics, and electronics are taken from Formula One experiences, add a mid-mounted V8 engine into the mix with the aid of electric motors, the torque is instant, the Valhalla will offer an amazing driving experience for the 150 fortunate owners that can enjoy this first for Aston Martin.

The total power output on the Aston Martin Valhalla is 950 hp, with 750 hp from the turbocharged V8 engine and the remaining 200 hp from the electric powertrain, and while 4-Liter V8 twin-turbo engine might have been sourced from Mercedes AMG, it is a bespoke unit for the Aston Martin Valhalla, at 7,200 rpm the maximum power of 750 hp goes to the rear wheels only, while a 150kW/400V battery hybrid system uses an E-Motor on the front axle, and a second E-Motor on the rear axle to add 200 hp more.

If the driver opts to use EV mode only, there will be power to the front axle exclusively, in all other driving modes, the electric motors are engaged on both axles, in a varying split front to rear, when conditions are right the full-electric power will be sent to the rear axle only, making sure the combined output from the V8 engine and the rear E-Motor offer exhilarating performance and acceleration to the driver.

Aston Martin’s CEO, Tobias Moers commented: “Preserving the essence of an exceptional concept car is vital when meeting the challenge of bringing it into production. With Valhalla not only have we stayed true to our commitment to building a world-beating supercar, but we have exceeded our original aims. The result is a pure driving machine – one which exists right at the cutting edge of performance and technology yet allows the driver to feel the emotion and thrill of complete connection and control.”

Being a hybrid, the transmission had to be completely redesigned for the Valhalla, the 8-Speed DCT unit is also bespoke for the Aston Martin Valhalla, there is no real reverse gear, to move backward the electric motors are used, still this transmission comes with an Electronic Limited Slip Differential at the rear for top-of-the-line traction and handling, thanks to the fact the V8 and E-Motors can be in a different gear inside the DCT, the maximum torque of 1,000 Nm is possible.

A totally silent drive is possible in full EV-mode while a top speed of 80 Mph (130 km/h) can be achieved this way over a range of 15 km, but when that big twin-turbo V8 engine comes to join the top speed goes to 217 mph (330 km/h) with an acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, as this is a street-legal race car, Aston Martin is hoping to set a record time of 6:30 on the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Ralph Illenberger, Head of Powertrain Engineering said: “Valhalla is our first opportunity to really show what we are capable of in a true production sense.  We have created our own bespoke air-to-air charge-cooled, flat-plane crank V8 engine and have combined it with a powerful hybrid system. And, of course, we also have our own bespoke Dual Clutch Transmission – a first for Aston Martin and an essential component both for Valhalla and future Aston Martin models. The result is a truly world-class powertrain for an efficient, ultra-performing supercar.”

The base for the Aston Martin Valhalla is a lightweight carbon fiber tub with F1 inspired pushrod front suspension while the rear suspension is a multilink design, with Multimatic Variable Spring rate and Adaptive Spool Valve (ASV) Damper units, when in ‘Track mode’ the dampers aren’t only stiffer, but the ride height is considerably lowered for maximum downforce, but for more practicality, the front axle comes with a lift system to get onto driveways.

Stopping power comes from large carbon-ceramic disc brakes together with bespoke Michelin tires in a staggered 20-inch and 21-inch, as usual, the tires have been specifically designed for this car which comes in at an overall weight of 1,550 kg, thanks to the experience gained from the Valkyrie hypercar, the aerodynamics on the Valhalla have been optimized to create an impressive downforce of 600 kg at 150 mph giving this car amazing stability at speed and offers high-speed cornering with ease.

When opening the forward-hinged dihedral doors that have cut-outs in the roof for easier entry or exit of the Aston Martin Valhalla, you can be greeted by either an RHD or an LHD configuration as Aston Martin intends to offer both options to their clients, and in case you are too tall to fit into the Valkyrie, you’re in luck as interior space in the Valhalla is larger, and features a touchscreen HMI on the central console with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The two seats inside the Valhalla are fixed onto the carbon-fiber tub, instead, both the pedals and the steering wheel can be adjusted to fit the driver, with a raised footwell you’ll get that Formula One feeling behind the wheel of the Valhalla.

For Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, Valhalla is an opportunity for the Aston Martin design team to express extreme performance with fresh form and proportion, and to capture the brand’s bold future-forward approach: “When we created the Valhalla concept we were keen to emphasize the design legacy of the Aston Martin Valkyrie and that intent remains unchanged, but the execution has evolved considerably in order to reach production of this all-new car. Though the legacy of Valkyrie is clear, Valhalla is now a more mature, fully resolved piece of design. One which combines the pure aerodynamic function you would expect from a marque competing in Formula One® together with the beautiful form, striking proportions, and exemplary detailing for which Aston Martin is renowned.”

There is no mention in the latest press release about delivery dates for the first customer cars from Aston Martin, but while this amazing looking, classic British Racing Green finished ‘production prototype’ for the Valhalla is production-ready according to Aston Martin, there is still a long way of development to go before the first of the 150 units can be shipped out, I’m sure we’ll be seeing Sebastian Vettel, Lance Stroll, and Nico Hulkenburg behind the wheel of several Valhalla test mules to fine-tune the dynamic properties over the next year or so, and that 2023 date for initial deliveries sounds plausible.

Porsche’s follow-up to the 918 Spyder hypercar turns up in the rumor mill

It’s been nearly a decade since Porsche introduced its last hypercar, the 918 Spyder, and a recent report claims the model’s long-awaited follow-up is almost ready. It’s so close that the firm has reportedly started taking orders.

Spike Feresten, a former Seinfeld writer and a Porsche enthusiast, spoke about the mysterious car with comedian and noted collector Jerry Seinfeld on his podcast. “Right now, if you’d like to, you can put a deposit down on a Porsche GT1,” he revealed without citing sources, according to Drive. “The rumor is, they’re going to announce this in August. There is going to be a new Porsche GT1 mid-engined special car that will follow in the footsteps of the Carrera GT and the 918,” he added. None of this is official, but some of it might not be as far-fetched as it sounds.

Porsche has vaguely discussed the 918’s successor on several occasions, though it significantly hasn’t confirmed it’s releasing the model, let alone provided a precise idea of when we’ll see it. If it’s indeed around the corner, we’re not surprised to find out the order book is already open. Carmakers routinely show new limited-edition models to their most loyal (and wealthiest) clients before revealing them to the public. That’s why many hypercars are sold out by the time they break cover. And, we have every reason to believe production of the next 918 will be limited.

Presenting the car in August makes sense, too. Monterey Car Week is back on the calendar, after all. Porsche could hold a private unveiling, or it could introduce the model at one of the dozens of high-octane events, like The Quail.

What the rumored GT1 will look like is still up in the air. It could be related to the 911, like the 1996 911 GT1 was, or it could be an entirely different beast. One inspired by the 680-horsepower hybrid prototype Porsche will enter in endurance races starting in 2023, perhaps? Or, something along the lines of the 919 Street built in 2017 and first shown in 2020? It’s too early to tell. However, we know Porsche wasn’t out of ideas when it came to improving or replacing the 918, it shed light on four never-before-seen hypercar prototypes in late 2020, and some of their genes could get spliced into the new project. What’s seemingly certain is that it won’t be purely electric; the German firm hinted in 2020 that it’s not interested in following companies like Lotus and Rimac into the EV hypercar segment.

At this point, anything is possible, including Porsche steering well clear of the hypercar segment in the foreseeable future. If the report is accurate, additional details about the flagship will undoubtedly emerge in the coming weeks.

Everrati and Superformance team up to build an all-electric GT40

Britain’s Everrati and America’s Superformance are teaming up to build all-electric continuation models of the iconic GT40 race car. Everrati, which has developed electric overhauls for the Porsche 911 (964), Land Rover Series IIA and Mercedes-Benz SL Pagoda, will take the lead on the powertrain, with Superformance supplying the body.

Superformance’s licensed replicas may conjure images of America challenging the best from Italy at Le Mans, but that was a trans-Atlantic effort as well; the body for the original was built in Coventry. The roles may be reversed, but the pairing is as old as the idea of dethroning Enzo Ferrari.

“The Everrati and Superformance partnership will allow enthusiasts to drive an electric-powered GT40, with development of this first model already underway,” the two said in their announcement. “A prototype chassis has been built and is being comprehensively adapted from ICE power to advanced electric propulsion at Everrati’s UK development centre in Upper Heyford, a former U.S. air base in the English Cotswolds.”

Neither provided any details regarding the GT40’s potential powertrain or its ultimate performance, but Superformance has pretty much always left such things up to the end customer, letting them choose from existing vintage and modern powertrains for its licensed replicas. There likely won’t be as many options for the electric GT40, but we sincerely doubt it will be a one-size-fits-all setup. Stay tuned.

Seth Rogen’s Weed Brand Made a Gravity Bong

“This is grand design all around,” John Mayer comments on Seth Rogen’s latest Instagram post.

When it comes to Rogen, it should come as no surprise that Mayer is referring to something weed related, and of course it comes from Rogen’s weed brand Houseplant. Following the release of Houseplant’s highly sought-after ash tray and tabletop lighter, the brand released the Gravity Glass.

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The Gravity Glass is a far cry from the DIY gravity bong stoners have long crafted from whatever they have lying around the house. Made from borosilicate glass, the Gravity Glass looks like it could a cocktail shaker (albeit a very fragile one). The design of the bong is inspired by vintage homewares, with even the announcement looking like it came out of a ’70s magazine. The weed bowl is made of low-conductivity brass, and the inner glass has a diamond motif that resembles the texture of a pineapple, though any connection to “Pineapple Express” may be purely coincidence.

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Rogen is known to be a fan of gravity bongs, which are popular for packing big hits of weed with less grass than a typical joint. The actor was once seen puffing out of a $600 gravity bong, called the Stündenglass, which immediately boosted its popularity. (We reviewed the Stündenglass here, and it is pretty cool.)

The Gravity Glass is only available in Los Angeles and San Francisco, retailing for $190, and it comes in two colors: amber and yellow. Answering a Twitter user’s question as to why Houseplant doesn’t ship outside California, Rogen replies, “So I don’t wind up in a federal prison.”

Price: $190

Our Guide to the Beach: What to Wear and Pack in Your Bag

Ah, summer: the time of year for sweating through your shirt, slathering yourself in sunscreen, and struggling to eat melting ice cream, all in the grandeur of the great outdoors. For coastal folks, trips to the beach are the season’s punctuation marks; respite from the race of everyday life.

But days on the beach require at least a little bit of planning. Some places require beach tags — essentially tickets — even for one-day visits. Others have slim windows you’re allowed to swim within. However, there’s another task you shan’t forget: packing a beach bag. What goes within is up to you, but remember: it’ll be your lifeline, where you turn to when the sun’s becoming too hot, whenever you need to change out of wet shorts.

Below, you’ll find guides for all of your beach bag essentials. Whether you’re dressed in your swim trunks, t-shirt and hat as you head down or you change upon arrival, there’s apparel, accessories, skincare products and more to shop — plus the bags to put them all in. Pack wisely.

Being Followed? Here’s How to Lose a Tail

There you are, innocent as can be, sipping your dark roast peacefully while driving to work on a Monday morning. Then, some jerk decides to ruin your day by nearly sideswiping you in his late-model Pontiac Fiero on his reckless way to who knows where — the local casino? You honk, he flips the bird, foams at the mouth and slams on his brakes. You don’t lose your cool, rationalizing that he’s likely several notches down on the cranial food chain, and he’s simply upset and will calm down. But, a minute later, Cro-Magnon’s still a few cars behind you. It’s too late.

He’s got it in for you — and you have your eyes on him. He’s darting in and out of lanes. You’re not completely sure if he’s decided to continue the chase or if he’s just that way all the time, everywhere. If he is tailing you, out to do some harm, remain calm and make some simple but very important decisions as to how to handle the situation. You automatically rule out going mano a mano since he might A) have a firearm; B) have a knife; C) have a bat; D) have nothing to lose; or E) all of the above. So you decide to put some distance between you and him — the wisest thing you’ve decided today since going with the dark roast. Here’s how to lose him for good.

Remain Calm and Assess

It’s not about how fast your car is or even about your driving skills. It’s about using your brains. Whatever you do, don’t panic. First, the potential assailant might not have the attention span to keep after you. The ideal situation is he loses interest and goes on his merry way. Keep an eye on him while you also pay attention to what you’re doing around the other drivers. If he turns off your route, chances are you no longer have to worry. Or, if he’s still following, don’t proceed all the way to your destination. Instead, proceed to step two.

Let Him Know You Know

If you’re convinced he’s following you after numerous turns and he never seems to pass you, then make sure he knows you’re paying attention. Rather than stopping and confronting, maintain your speed and write down his license plate number or take a photo of his plates and car, if you get a chance. Make sure he sees you make eye contact and sees what you’re doing. That alone might scare him off.

Don’t Go It Alone

Crime is all about opportunity, so don’t give the guy the chance. If you’re not already on a highway (where there are no stops unless there’s gridlock), try to get to one and keep speed with the flow of traffic, no faster and definitely no slower. The fewer opportunities your tail has to do harm, the better. If you can’t get to a highway, stay on populated roads and by all means avoid ending up on a street alone with the guy. Also, in the unfortunate situation where you have car trouble, you can pull into a service station instead of making yourself a target on deserted streets.

Get Out of Sight

Without getting to nutty speeds (you’re not being chased by Robert De Niro and Jean Reno in a Mercedes with a rocket launcher, a la Ronin), deftly weave through traffic and use larger vehicles like big rigs, box trucks and full-sized SUVs to place a visual barrier between you and your tail. If you’re going faster or slower than the flow of traffic, you’re easier to spot. If done properly, which entails not staying in one spot for too long, you hide behind a truck and then at the right moment, you can pull off at an intersection or exit without your tail seeing you. By the time he figures out you’re not there anymore, he’ll likely never find you.

Shoot the Gap

If this term is unfamiliar to you, don’t worry. It’s not a common practice except by those who like to circumvent everyday traffic laws because they don’t want to wait. If you’re the first car in a left-hand turn lane, and there’s no green arrow, gun the light as soon as it changes to green, so your tail gets trapped behind oncoming traffic. It’s a move he likely won’t suspect, but do it right the first time or he’ll be onto you the second time around. If you’re able to put cars between you on your first try, get off that road as soon as you can in case there were only a handful of cars to block him.

Call In the Fuzz

There’s no place in the process of attempting to lose your tail that you can’t invoke the power of law enforcement, but do it properly and pay attention to detail so you can provide the right information. While keeping an eye on your tail, dial 911 and let them know you’re being followed by someone who might want to do you harm. Give them your location (including street, cross street and direction of travel), even if the police can hone in on your location via your mobile phone. Give them the make, model and color of both your car and the pursuit vehicle, as well as a license plate number of your tail if you have that information. If you can’t tell car models from loaves of bread, then give unique descriptions like bumper stickers, window tinting, etc. As the police are en route, try not to deviate from your direction and route of travel and maintain speed if you can. If your tail sees the cavalry coming, he might drop off quickly. If he’s stupid, it’ll just be bad news for him.

At the end of the day, it’s about staying calm and being smart. The last thing you want to do is confront the individual (even if it’s that gorgeous-but-psychotic ex) or get into a chase where you could hurt yourself or others. You don’t have to have the fastest car, and it will actually help you if your car is common, so you’ll blend in with traffic. More than anything else, though, survival, whether it’s on foot or on four wheels, is all about keeping your head clear and being calmer than the guy who wants to put a hurtin’ on you.

Aston Martin Valhalla is ready to Ragnarok with 937 plug-in horsepower

The Aston Martin Valhalla is here. The company’s first series-production, mid-engine monster packs 937 plug-in hybrid horsepower in a lightweight carbon fiber chassis. This 217-mph hypercar is expected to run a 6:30 lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Originally, the hopeful Ferrari killer was referred to as Project 003. It was later renamed Valhalla and was on track to make its debut with an in-house, 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 – the first engine Aston developed in-house since a 5.3-liter V8 entered production in 1969. After Daimler increased its stake in the British luxury builder in 2020, those plans went out the window.

Rather than an in-house V6, the Valhalla will now be powered by a customized AMG Black series V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain. The twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter flat-plane-öcrank V8 makes a respectable 740 horsepower all on its own. Two electric motors combine for an additional 201. That should add up to 941, not 937; we’re assuming a few stray horses drowned crossing the Great Sea of Unit Conversion.

The engine and motors are paired to a unique eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that has no physical reverse gear. Instead, the electric motors are run the opposite direction to simulate a backward gear, saving both weight and complexity in the gearbox. This is mated to an advanced torque vectoring all-wheel drive system can send 100% of available electric power to either the front or rear axles.

Aston Martin says it will do 0-60 in just 2.5 seconds on the way to a 217 mph top speed. Around town, it can also cruise in electric-only mode for up to 9 miles up to a speed of 80 mph, but we suspect you’ll deplete the battery much more quickly than that if you floor it up to its top EV speed.

“Preserving the essence of an exceptional concept car is vital when meeting the challenge of bringing it into production,” said CEO Tobias Moers. “With Valhalla not only have we stayed true to our commitment to build a world-beating supercar, but we have exceeded our original aims. The result is a pure driving machine — one which exists right at the cutting edge of performance and technology yet allows the driver to feel the emotion and thrill of complete connection and control.”

Its carbon fiber body construction makes it ultra-light (just 3,417 pounds, which is nothing for a PHEV) and super rigid. Its adaptive spring and damper suspension was developed with Multimatic, and like most modern supercars it offers adjustable ride height and a front-axle lift system for clearing troublesome obstacles. The aero was inspired by (and in some ways borrowed from) F1 and produces 600 kg (1,322 pounds) of downforce at 150 mph.

While this may be a series-production model, don’t expect to see too many of them around town. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if they’re all already spoken for. Stay tuned for more details as Aston Martin ramps toward production and reveals more details about the Valhalla’s driving experience.

The Best of Everything You Need to Head Back to the Gym

It’s funny to look back at the fitness topics we were covering around a year ago: stuff like the best stay-at-home workouts, a face mask designed for running and the question of whether your activity tracker can detect COVID-19. My how times have changed. Yes, the pandemic continues to make its presence felt — we’re going to have an Olympics with no spectators, after all — but in the U.S. things generally seem to be returning to some semblance of normal.

Case in point: gyms. All but abandoned a year ago, they are bouncing back in a big way. According to a report by the financial services company Jefferies, May traffic at fitness centers hit 83 percent of January 2020 levels, and it’s down just 6 percent from May 2019. Quite a flex.

Thinking of returning to the gym yourself? Here’s everything you need to gear up for some epic workouts, from shorts, shirts, shoes and masks to recovery goods, yoga mats, protein powders and even the best bags with which to tote it all.

Editor’s note: For everyone’s safety, follow CDC guidelines and state and local laws with regard to wearing masks in gym settings. They can be tricky and often vary depending on whether you are vaccinated. Thankfully, the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) has been tracking mask requirements by state, and here’s a chart with the organization’s most recent findings.
