iTunes Is Dead. Here’s What Happened to Your Music Library

When Apple released macOS Catalina in the fall of 2019, it also quietly closed the book on iTunes. If your Mac runs Catalina or any later version of macOS (like Big Sur or Monterey), the iconic but now-ancient music management software is no more. The good news is that does not mean your library is gone. You’ll just need to go to another app to get it.

With the demise of iTunes, the Music app has inherited some of the older apps features. Accordingly, your iTunes library as you knew it, with all your purchased music, should be available inside the Music app, which you can find with a quick Spotlight Search if you hit Command + Space Bar and then type in “Music.”

While Apple Music is a subscription service that costs $10 a month much like Spotify, the Music app on iOS doesn’t require a subscription and now performs the duties that iTunes had before it, including syncing. The iTunes Music Store also lives on inside the Music app, giving you the option to purchase your music instead of subscribing to a streaming service.

While iTunes may be dead in the newest versions of macOS, it still lives on elsewhere. iTunes continues to work on older versions of macOS and Apple has so far left the Windows version functional and intact. Still, it’s the end of an era (and maybe a welcome one), and if you want to be absolutely sure your library survives, take action while you still can.

How to get your iTunes Library on iPhone

If your aim is to access your old iTunes Library on your iPhone, the good news is that it’s possible, the bad news is that it’s not quite as simple or free as you might hope. Apple has several options available, each with benefits and drawbacks.

The free option: Sync Manually

If you want your iTunes Library on your iPhone for free, the only real option is to sync it manually. In Catalina and more recent operating systems, you can sync using Finder. Here are Apple’s full instructions, but the process goes like this:

  • Attach your iPhone to your Mac with a Lightning cable.
  • Click on your device when it appears in the left sidebar of your Finder window
  • Choose the type of content you want to sync and check the items to transfer in the menu that appears.

You can also sync over Wi-Fi by enabling the setting to show your device on Wi-Fi after you’ve plugged it in by cable for the first time.

The easy option: Subscribe to Apple Music

The most seamless way is to subscribe to Apple Music and turn on “Library Sync.” You can do this by:

    • Open the Music App on your Mac
    • Go to Music, then Preferences
    • Go to the tab General and select “Sync Library”
    • Go to Settings, then Music on your iPhone
    • Turn on “Sync Library”

This is the easiest method, but it does require an Apple Music subscription which will run you $10 a month, but which offers streaming and can replace a service like Spotify.

The other option: Use iTunes Match

If you don’t want to subscribe to Apple Music but also don’t want to sync manually, you can subscribe to iTunes Match, which exists for this purpose. It’s cheaper than Apple Music, at $25 a year, but also hard to find. Here’s where it is hiding.

      • Open the Music app on your Mac
      • Select “iTunes Store” from the sidebar
      • Scroll alllll the way to the bottom of the page
      • Find “iTunes Match” in small print under “Features” in the footer

Once you subscribe to iTunes Match, you can sync your library with the same set of instructions as for syncing with Apple Music, listed above.

Best V10 Engines Ever Produced

Most people probably don’t know it, but V10 engines are kind of the awkward middle child within the high-performance engine family. They are often overlooked for their smaller, more compact, and just-as-spirited V8 siblings, yet still somehow manage to cut a notably less brawny figure next to the larger V12 motors. In terms of outcomes, this is probably why even the most hardcore car enthusiasts will have a difficult time recalling more V10 production cars than you can count on one hand – there are fewer of them than you’re likely thinking, and perhaps there should be more of them for this reason, but that’s for a different discussion.

Interestingly, it’s the Volkswagen Group which currently has the monopoly on supplying this particular engine, via Lamborghini and Audi production models which are under the corporation’s umbrella (plus its namesake Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI – more on that below). Meanwhile, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Ferrari would at the very least have delved into the art of the V10 -which they did, though only to produce such engines for Formula 1 cars from 1996 to 2005.

Quantifiably speaking, yes, there are fewer V10s out there than the other engines most closely related to it. However, each V10 engine mentioned on this list is undeniably iconic and rightfully potent, particularly when it comes to panache. So while this middle child might not always steal the spotlight, nor hog affection that goes to its siblings, it is in no way lacking any of the talent in its DNA.

Here’s the shortlist of 10 such engines, which we have curated:

Lamborghini / Audi 5.2L V10

Lamborghini / Audi 5.2L V10 Engine

Ever since 2008 – when the refreshed Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 was released – all V10 engines used in the Lamborghini line-up have been based on the 5.2L architecture. This has carried over to the Gallardo’s successor – the Lamborghini Huracán – with each and every one of its models having been fitted with the aforementioned power plant, up to this point. In the current stage of its evolution, the 5.2L naturally-aspirated V10 is mechanically identical to Audi’s version of the engine (which uses ‘Fuel Stratified Injection) and is seen in Audi’s own R8 supercar; however, power outputs vary depending on the trim levels of the respective models.

Audi 5.0L V10 Biturbo

Audi 5.0L V10 Biturbo Engine

The sharing of tech (and a healthily-stocked pantry of engine parts) between Lamborghini and Audi spans back more than a decade now, and the engine used in the C6-generation Audi RS 6 has to go down as one of the best collaborations to date. Derived from the outgoing 5.0L naturally-aspirated V10 unit from the Lamborghini Gallardo, the motor in the RS 6 was repurposed with a pair of turbochargers. This allowed the super-wagon to produce 571 hp and 478 lb-ft of torque, on its way to becoming Audi’s most powerful car ever, in 2010. While it was handily more powerful than its competition – the BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 – it also cost quite a bit more (almost double, after conversion) which is likely the reason why it didn’t reach US shores.

Audi 5.2L V10 FSI 40V

Audi 5.2L V10 FSI 40V Engine

Unlike the C6-generation Audi RS 6, the 5.0L unit used in the third-generation Audi S6 is less related to a Lamborghini equivalent and has more in common with an Audi 4.2L V8. For starters, it has a longer stroke and wider bore than the Lamborghini 5.0L V10 seen in the Gallardo, making for the better low-end power which is more befitting of the larger sedan. When considering the internals, the 5.2L motor in the S6 more closely resembles the aforementioned 4.2L V8 which was once used in the B6-generation Audi S4. Thanks to the tweaks mentioned above, this engine was good for 444 hp in the four-ringed luxury sports sedan.

Lamborghini Huracán Performanté 5.2L V10

Lamborghini Huracán Performanté 5.2L V10 Engine

The 5.2L naturally-aspirated V10 power plant we’ve been speaking so much about in this list is at the peak of its evolution via the current Lamborghini Huracán Performanté. In this configuration, the engine produces 640 hp @ 8,000 rpm and 443 lb-ft of torque @ 6,500 rpm; this makes the supercar good for 0-100 km/h in 3.1 seconds and a blistering top speed of 325 km/h, all without the assistance of any type of forced induction. Augmented with the greatest technologies available today, the motor produces its power more efficiently than ever before as well, with more than 70% of its torque already available as early as 1,000 rpm.

Dodge Viper ACR 8.4L V10

Dodge Viper ACR 8.4L V10 Engine

Even if the Dodge Hellcat is hogging all the headlines these days, there’s always something you have to admire about the lunacy of a naturally-aspirated 8.4L V10 engine. No, the Dodge Viper doesn’t do subtlety very well. Yes, it does happen to fall under the ‘Old Testament’ definition of “awesome”. With 640 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque being produced from that colossus of an all-aluminum engine, the Viper has the exhaust note of a semi-dormant volcano. It would make absolutely no sense at all if it wasn’t just so damn fast. Variants such as the SRT-10 and ACR-X took the road-going version of the car to the next level, with the latter being a turn-key, non-street legal race car that participates in Viper racing leagues around the world.

Lexus LFA 4.8L V10 (1LR-GUE)

Lexus LFA 4.8L V10 (1LR-GUE) Engine

Many regard the Lexus LFA as one of the best supercars ever made. Lexus only made 500 units, and I assumed those 500 sold out quickly. I was wrong. Despite the fact that Lexus hasn’t produced the LFA since 2012, there are still seven brand new LFA supercars for sale in the US, according to Carscoops. With all that said, the LFA came with one of the best V10 engines ever produced by a Japanese automaker. The 4.8L naturally-aspirated V10 – dubbed 1LR-GUE – made 552 hp and 352 lb-ft of torque. Developed in collaboration with Yamaha, it was a free-revving engine with an exhaust note that is truly unlike any other on the planet. As the sole representative from Japan, the 1LR-GUE is certainly one for the ages.

Porsche Carrera GT 5.7L V10 (980/01)

Porsche Carrera GT 5.7L V10 (980/01) Engine

What makes the Porsche Carrera GT engine so special is that it is technically a race car engine. Not in that loosely-based sense – as is often used as a gimmick by salespeople – but in the true sense of the word. In the late 1990s, Porsche engineers in Zuffenhausen were assigned the task of developing a naturally-aspirated V10 concept engine, which was to later be used in a race car for the infamous 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. Sadly, the completion of that race car never came to fruition, but the efforts of the engine builders would not go to waste.

Porsche decided to adapt the engine for use in the Carrera GT and took the necessary steps to not only refine it in order to satisfy production car protocols but also managed to make it a more powerful version than the original unit. The result is a 5.7L naturally-aspirated V10 engine, which produces 612 hp @ 8,000 rpm and 435 lb-ft of torque @ 5,750 rpm. This allowed the Carrera GT to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds and 0-100 mph in 6.9 seconds, with a top speed of 205 mph.

BMW M5 V10 (S85)

BMW M5 V10 (S85) Engine

Released in mid-2005, the E60 M5 sedan featured a high-revving and ultra-powerful V10 engine, which was the only one of its kind in a series-production car at that moment in time (while also being the marque’s most powerful production car engine ever made). The 5.0L naturally-aspirated unit shared more than just the same number of cylinders as the Formula 1 engine that powered the BMW Williams F1 team. Technology forged in the heat of motorsport had enhanced the processes and components used in creating this new powerhouse. As you would expect from BMW M, this high-performance motor generates enormous pulling force over its entire speed range.

VW Touareg V10 TDI

VW Touareg V10 TDI Engine

What makes this particular automobile so remarkable is not that it’s a Volkswagen, or an SUV, or diesel-powered, but that it’s all of those things with a twin-turbocharged 10-cylinder engine thrown into the mix. This Frankenstein-ish power plant would only feature for a couple of years before the whole Dieselgate fiasco, and had it not been for the calamity which ensued, it surely would have garnered more recognition than it has mustered to this day. All of its characteristics exude a bias towards low-end power, and the stats certainly reflect this – 309 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpm. Oh, and don’t forget, a very utilitarian tow rating of 7,700 lbs.

Dodge Ram SRT-10 8.3L V10

Dodge Ram SRT-10 8.3L V10 Engine

Imagine a Viper engine swapped into, then modified for use in a Dodge Ram pick-up truck, and voila. So what exactly does this magic trick entail? Well for starters, in July 2004, a Dodge Ram SRT-10 driven by NASCAR driver Brendan Gaughan, set the Guinness World Record (and the SCCA record) for the world’s fastest production truck when it achieved an average top speed of 154.587 mph. This was all possible with the help of the 500 hp and 525 lb-ft of torque that the naturally-aspirated motor produced, with 90% of its torque available at 1,500 rpm. It could even tow up to 7,500 lbs; though we would bet that most owners would forgo any procedures that might keep them from optimizing their 1/4 mile times.

One of the Best Cars on Sale Today May Be Killed Off Next Year

Whether you call it a sedan or a sporty fastback, the Kia Stinger has been a tremendous critical success. The high-performance Stinger GT model may be among the best value propositions out there, delivering Porsche Panamera-esque looks and performance for about half the price (or, in other words, a cut-rate Giulia Quadrifoglio). The Stinger was among the three finalists for North American Car of the Year in 2018, and we’ve heard it came exceedingly close to winning it.

But critical success has not translated into actual success, so the Stinger may not make it to a second generation. Korean Car Blog cites anonymous sources that claim Kia has sent out its production schedule to South Korean plants for 2022…and that schedule has Stinger production ending after Q2 2022.

It would be hard to quibble with Kia if it decided to terminate the Stinger, given the poor sales. Stinger numbers were up just 2% in the U.S. through June to 6,498 units…during a time when the Telluride rose 79% and the Seltos increased by 129%. Kia sold nearly eight times as many models of the new K5 that slots under the Stinger.

kia stinger

Kia

Why hasn’t America warmed to the Kia Stinger the way it has to the Telluride? Sedans are a different market than SUVs. Crossover buyers don’t exhibit the same brand fixation as other segments. They will flock to a less premium marque like Kia, Hyundai, or VW if it’s offering a strong value proposition in the $40–$50K range.

But that same grey area market that’s so lucrative with crossovers does not appear to exist for sedans. Affordable versions have a clear market, but buyers going past $40,000 really want a premium Audi, Lexus or BMW badge. There aren’t many people looking to spend closer to $50,000 on a Kia sedan — even an awesome one.

The only manufacturer trying a similar premium midsize sedan gambit is Volkswagen with the Arteon. It has a similar story: reviewers love its luxury value; buyers want no part of paying almost $50,000 for a VW sedan.

Bose May Finally Be Updating Its QuietComfort Headphones

It looks like Bose is gearing up to release new QuietComfort wireless headphones. As first reported by PhoneArena‘s Doroteya Borisova, the new headphones just passed their FCC certification. The filing showed the first real world images of the headphones as even told us what they’re going to be called: the Bose QuietComfort 45.

The Bose QuietComfort 45 are poised to be the true successor to the Bose QuietComfort 35, which were first released five years ago (in 2016) and then updated a year later in 2017; the updated model, QuietComfort 35 II, added a button to quickly summon Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, but were otherwise exactly the same.

The upcoming QuietComfort 45 appear will have a very similar design to the QuietComfort 35 II, with the one major improvement being that they’ll have a USB-C charging port, as the current QuietComfort 35 II still use an old micro-USB port, which very few modern gadgets still use.

The lack of design update might sound anti-climatic, but the QuietComfort 35 II are still some of lighting and most comfortable noise-canceling headphones you can buy and, if you ask me, they don’t need a design overhaul. Plus, Bose released the Headphones 700, noise-canceling headphones in late 2019, which have a completely new design and a more expensive price tag.

The upcoming QuietComfort 45 are expected to replace the QuietComfort 35 II in the company’s headphone lineup. We expect them to cost around $300, which would mean that they’d still be a more affordable alternative to the Headphones 700, which originally were priced at $399, but are regularly on sale for $379.

At this time, we don’t know when the Bose is going to announced (or release) the QuietComfort 45.

The 12 Best Sheets to Buy in 2021

Buying decent sheets is confusing, and almost laughably so. What is sateen? Someone told me thread count doesn’t matter anymore — is that true? What in the world do plys mean, and why are there staples in cotton?

All fair questions, and all the result of a decades-long practice by brands bamboozling customers in hopes they’d just buy bedding without thought. Luckily, the reign of the thread-count scammers and quality skimpers is ending. In their place: a wave of direct-to-consumer brands that skip out on distribution and stocking costs in favor of materials and craftsmanship. And with them, mega brands, too, have become at least a bit more honest about their affordable offerings.

We tested out 35 different sheet sets to find out which ones do their job the best. Our most important piece of advice to shoppers: buy sheets for you. Sleep hot? Skip sateen. Prefer crispy hotel sheets? Check out the percale selections, and so forth. If neither of those things makes sense to you, fear not; rounded up here is all the bedding jargon you’ll need to know before you get your next set.

The 12 Best Sheet Sets of 2021

    The Short List

Best Overall Sheets: Riley Home Percale Sheets

    Courtesy

    Riley Percale Sheet Set

    rileyhome.com

    $99.00

    • Crisp and cool
    • Available in a variety of colors and prints
    • Comes out of the dryer wrinkly
    • Fitted sheet can be too big for some short mattresses

For sub-$100, the Riley Home Percale Sheets are a steal, especially with their premium features like long-staple combed cotton and an understated baratta stitch. On a humid summer night, these sheets stayed crisp and cool. The sheets are not made of supima, but you’d be forgiven if you thought they were. The range of colors, the smoothness of the sheets and the overall feel-goodness of them make these the best sheets for your money whether you’re a broke college student or a billionaire.

Best Splurge Sheets/Best Linen Sheets: Cultiver Linen Sheets

    Courtesy

    Cultiver Linen Sheet Set

    cultiver.com

    $385.00

    • High-quality sheets better than options double the price
    • Muted colors are brilliantly dyed
    • Sheets bunch up around mattress

After sleeping on a number of rough and scraggly linen sheets, we found Cultiver’s sheets had a shorter break-in period, thanks to a pre-enzyme wash, compared to comparable linen sheets. Cultiver offers its linen sheets in a wide array of muted and understated colors, which is the result of a first-rate dye process. The weaving, sewing and dyeing are all exceptional, a given considering the price point. At $385 for a queen set, they’re certainly an investment, but they’re still nowhere near as expensive as other linen sheets that are of a lesser quality.

Best Affordable Sheets: Target Threshold Organic Cotton Solid Sheets

    Courtesy

Threshold 300 Thread Count Organic Cotton Solid Sheet Set

    target.com

    $46.00

    • Soft, crisp and cool
    • Super affordable
    • Limited selection of colors
    • Gets wrinkly

This one wasn’t even close. Target’s hyper-affordable Threshold-branded sheets easily outclassed the likes of Amazon’s best-selling Mellani sheets, the AmazonBasics line itself, two sets of sub-$50 Walmart sheets and two Ikea sets.

Cheap sheets make their cheapness known in a variety of ways — some show lousy stitching and begin to fray after one wash; some arrive with an off-putting chemical smell; others simply feel crappy to lie on. The Threshold sheets set themselves apart by retaining the basic reasons you’d buy a percale set in the first place — they’re crisp, cool, easy-to-clean and reasonably moisture-wicking. And at $46 for a queen and no weird chemical smells, there’s little to no competition at this price point.

    Important Terms to Know

Percale: Also called a plain weave, percale is a balanced weave pattern where yarn is typically threaded in a one-under-one-over pattern. Percale is not a material, though it is nearly always used in reference to cotton sheets. Percale sheets are typically lighter weight, crisper, affordable and matte (read: not shiny). Because of this, percale is the most popular sheet type by a significant margin.

Sateen: Not satin. Known for its luxe smoothness, wrinkle-resistant qualities, and a dulled shininess, sateen sheets are also almost always made of cotton, but bear different attributes than percale. A sateen weave is a tight, unbalanced weave, with more vertical threads than horizontal, making it heavier feeling on the body and limiting airflow more than percale sheets do. Sateen sheets sleep warmer than nearly every other sheet type and material for this reason.

Linen: Made from the flax plant, linen is woven much more loosely because its threads are typically much larger. This gives linen its trademark airiness. But linen is not necessarily lightweight — it’s typically heavier per square inch than sateen or percale cotton, and, due to natural properties the flax plant possesses, is the superior moisture-wicking textile. Linen sheets are often pricier than sateen or percale due to a more involved manufacturing process and lower supply of materials (spoilers: we use more cotton than flax).

Staple: Not what you bind paper together with. A staple signals the length of the cotton fibers used to make the sheet — the longer the staple, the longer the thread, which in turn means fewer threads are needed, creating a more durable fabric that produces less lint. Around 85 percent of cotton produced is short staple, with the remaining 15 percent being long and extra-long staple. Thus, the longer the staple, the higher the quality and cost.

Ply: The number of yarns in each thread. Some sheets will call their constructions two or three plies — this means there are that many yarn strings woven into each thread that makes the sheet. More plies typically means a more rigid, denser construction, which can create the “crisp” feeling you’ll see sheets described with.

Thread Count: The measure of total threads present in a single square inch of sheet. This number is calculated by adding horizontal and vertical threads. Thread count is one factor in determining sheet quality, but can be manipulated by using finer threads or using multiple plies and artificially doubling (or tripling) thread count.

Pilling: Occurs when the ends of fibers become frayed and tangled, picking up dust, lint and other frayed fibers. If a pillow or sheet looks and feels fuzzy, that’s likely pilling. Pilling occurs more regularly when shorter staple cotton is in use, as it’s easier for them to come undone.

    Bed Sheet FAQs

    What’s the Best Thread Count?

“Pumped-up numbers with inferior, multi-ply yarn, the [thread count] numbers are often lies to begin with. A higher thread count doesn’t equate to better quality. Stay within the 200- to 300-range and you’ll be good,” said Jimmy McDonald, cofounder of Authenticity50.

Every sheet maker we spoke with echoed a similar sentiment. Thread count just isn’t a good measure of quality as a standalone figure, apart from exposing sellers who are (probably) trying to rip you off. If you see any sheets above with a thread count of 500 or above, regardless of material or weave, feel free to take that as a big red sign that says “bullshit.” There’s only so many threads you can squeeze into a square inch of fabric, so these higher thread counts are either adding plies to their sheet and counting those as double or artificially weaving in more threads, which is only going to make for a hotter, heavier sheet anyway.

What’s the Difference Between Percale and Sateen?

The vast majority of people sleep on percale — it’s crisp, cool and versatile. Its balanced weave allows air to flow through the sheet, and allows the sheet to stack in areas and “float” above the skin, creating more avenues for air to keep you cool.

Sateen isn’t without its own strengths, though. Its predominantly vertical, unbalanced weave gives it less rigidity than percale, allowing it to fall and drape on a bed more attractively than other weaves. It’s a better choice for people with significantly more sensitive skin, as it’s much smoother to the touch than other popular bedding weaves and materials.

Sateen’s downsides pertain to durability and its knack for insulating too much heat. The imbalanced weave of sateen makes it more likely for pilling, sheen loss and tears to occur, so it will typically show wear more quickly. The weave is also responsible for a detracted airflow, meaning you’ll be warmer than you would be under percale.

What Is “Egyptian Cotton,” and Why Does the Type of Cotton Matter?

Egyptian cotton is probably the most famous type of cotton, and rightfully so — real Egyptian cotton is extremely long-staple cotton that can be wound into a long, tight and soft yarn that makes for durable, cozy textiles. Unfortunately, odds are the sheets you bought, even if they say they’re made with Egyptian cotton, aren’t.

Truth is, there aren’t many good ways to determine if a set of sheets is using all real Egyptian cotton, as brands often use a trace amount to claim it as a marketing tool (you can reference this website, but very few brands are registered).

Supima cotton is an American-grown variety of true Egyptian cotton, and fabric must be certified by the American Supima Association to call itself Supima (find an updated list of brands that use Supima here). Most premium brands will use one version or another of long or extra-long staple cotton, which is a good indicator the company is using quality materials. As noted above, the longer the staple, the greater the fabric’s durability. It’s also useful to check for a GOTS certification to make sure you’re getting sheets made without any toxic materials and in an ecologically-friendly way.

Why Does Linen Feel Scratchy at First?

While all percale and sateen sheets are made from cotton, linen is made from flax, which is a different beast altogether. Where cotton is extracted in a fluffy ball called a boll, the fiber used to make linen is a bast fiber that more resembles what you’d expect from a plant product. Bast fibers are taken from the core of the flax plant, and, as such, are not fluffy or pleasant initially — but their tensile strength is naturally higher than cotton.

The roughness of linen sheets when they ship to your home isn’t indicative of their quality — you have to give linen time to break into its charm. Softer qualities are brought out over time through wash and wear. A good rule of thumb with linen (and all sheets, really) is to give it a good wash right when you get it to start that process.

Best Percale Sheets: Boll & Branch Percale Solid Sheet Set

    Boll and Branch

Boll & Branch Percale Hemmed Sheet Set

    bollandbranch.com

    $238.00

    • Accommodates all kinds of sleepers
    • Not as wrinkly as other percale sheets
    • Oversized fitted sheet bunches up
    • May be too thin for some

Though not the sheets that made it famous, Boll & Branch’s percale sheets are stellar. They launched in April of 2018, and out of the mountain of percale sheets I tested, this set stood out for a couple reasons: The sheets are a bit airier than the company’s signature sheets, which are made for a cooler (but still cozy) sleeping experience. The percale sheets are made using a plain weave (one-under, one-over) with the brand’s signature organic long-staple cotton, and utilize two very fine plys (layers) that give structure while maintaining maximum breeziness.

Best Sateen Sheets: Cuddledown Hotel Sateen Sheet Set

    Cuddledown

    Cuddledown Solid Sateen Sheet

    cuddledown.com

    $202.00

    • Buttery soft and cozy
    • Doesn’t get wrinkly
    • Fitted sheet slips off

It seems everyone on the internet has crowned Cuddledown’s (try and ignore the name) 400-thread count sateen set the champion of sateen. We should note that sateen is not our favorite bedding material — far from it — but for those who take to the buttery softness, heavier, warmer feel and an admittedly gorgeous sheet drape, Cuddledown is pretty damn great. These sheets are made with length to spare (a feature to accommodate all mattress heights), and they proved themselves to be absurdly wrinkle-resistant. The long-staple cotton used makes for a sheet that won’t wear out as quickly as most sateen sets.

    $150.00

    • Breathable, and wicks away moisture
    • Richly colored
    • Super soft
    • Oddly shiny

West Elm’s Tencel sheets are famous on TikTok after one social media user praised its silky smooth texture. Tencel as a fabric is one of the best bedding materials for hot sleepers for its ability to wick away moisture and stay cool to the touch, even in severe heat situations. West Elm’s sheets are good for those with sensitive skin, and it lacks the scratchiness of cotton or linen sheets, while also lacking any of the crinkly noises that may arise when you move around in bed.

Best Affordable Linen Sheets: Brooklinen Linen Core Sheet Set

    Brooklinen

    Brooklinen Linen Core Sheet Set

    • Softer from the get-go
    • Cool for hot sleepers
    • Slightly thin

Linen sheets are notoriously expensive, so “affordable” is relative here. Starting at $269, Brooklinen’s set is as airy as you’d want it to be, but the weave isn’t too loose either, as was common in testing cheaper linens. When compared with the other linen sheets we tested, the Brooklinen set was significantly softer from the get-go (other than Parachute’s garment-dyed set). The low cost, less aggressively-textured feel and a great variety of colors make Brooklinen’s set a rock-solid linen starter set.

Best Affordable Sateen Sheets: Target Threshold Organic Cotton Sateen Sheet Set

    Target

Threshold Organic Cotton Sateen Sheet Set

    target.com

    $49.00

    • Excellent value
    • Soft against the skin
    • Not particularly breathable
    • Wrinkly

Similar to the budget percale category, there isn’t much competition here. Target’s sateen offering blew other similarly-price sateen sheets out of the water in softness and looks. In fact, apart from a bit less natural wrinkle resistance, they were on par with the Cuddledown sheets. The biggest marks against them pertains to breathability, where they’re easily eclipsed by more premium options. But for less than $50 for a set, not everything can be perfect.

Best Sheets for Hot Sleepers: Authenticity50 Signature Sheets Set

    Authenticity50

    Authenticity50 Signature Sheets Set

    authenticity50.com

    $199.00

    • Perfect year-round sheets
    • Made in the US
    • Inventory issues

Extra-long staple Supima cotton is the crème de la crème in the cotton world, but you typically have to spend half a month’s rent to the real-deal stuff. Not so with Authenticity50’s absurdly well-reviewed Supima percale weave sheets. Made completely in the U.S. (“seed-to-stitch,” the website notes), these sheets were our runner-up for best overall percale sheets due to a body that’s light enough to stay cool in the summer, but not so light you’d need to change them in the winter. You’ll be hard-pressed to find the same mixture of craftsmanship, materials and company-wide transparency for less than $200 — and these start at $139.

Best Sheets on Amazon: Peru Pima Percale Sheet Set

    Peru Pima

    Peru Pima Percale Sheet Set

    amazon.com

    $129.99

    • Good value
    • Durable and soft
    • Not Supima

Frankly, buying sheets on Amazon is annoyingly tedious. The all-caps descriptions are fluffy, figuratively speaking, and there’s virtually no way to reprimand brands that try to bullshit you. The “Pima” cotton these sheets are made from is not Supima-certified, but it is extra-long-staple cotton nonetheless — and for a really, really solid price at that. Peru Pima has been making these sheets for quite some time, too, and has its own website that’s manned by people who respond to customer service requests. These sound like low bars to hop, but Amazon may very well be the biggest remaining offender in the old bedding-misinformation scheme.

Best-Looking Sheets: Coyuchi Organic Crinkled Percale Sheets

    Coyuchi

    Coyuchi Organic Crinkled Percale Sheets

    coyuchi.com

    $198.00

    • Perfectly broken in
    • Available in beautiful colors
    • A little thin

Like a well-plated dish can make food taste better, a bed that calls us to it makes sleep better. Coyuchi’s crinkled percale product uses a proprietary low-thread-count weave to create these lightweight, “worn in” sheets. The lower thread count makes them exceptionally airy, yet still heavier on the body — almost like a linen sheet might feel. Pair the sheets and pillowcases with Coyuchi’s traditional percale duvet cover for the coziest, most-photogenic bed imaginable.

Best Eco-Friendly Sheets: Alterra Pure GOTS-Organic Cotton Percale Sheet Set

    Alterra Pure

Alterra Pure GOTS-Organic Cotton Percale Sheet Set

    alterrapure.com

    $150.00

    • Sustainably made and ethically sourced
    • Comfortable and soft
    • Limited selection of colors

Yes, they’re comfortable, too. Alterra Pure’s percale was the runner-up to Authenticity50’s percale in “Best Sheets for Hot Sleepers.” The sheets are wonderfully light, but they’re also the most responsibly raised of any I tested. Alterra uses only recycled and reused water during production and emits a whopping zero gallons of wastewater during production. These 100 percent organic cotton percale-weave sheets are made from Fair Trade-cotton bought from farm co-ops that Alterra Pure works with on various sustainability projects. The materials are GOTS-certified and even produced in an eco-friendly, LEED-certified factory.

    AmazonBasics Sateen Sheet Set

Though reasonably well-reviewed on Amazon, AmazonBasics’s sheets aren’t worth the bother. The microfiber set is 100 percent polyester, and it began pilling after two washes. It was also a bit suffocating compared to others in the affordable price bracket.

    Mellani Brushed Microfiber Sheet Set

We had high hopes for these sheets, which are among the best-selling on Amazon. Even though the microfiber sheets were lightweight, they didn’t allow for much airflow. The set we ordered arrived with threads already coming apart, a defect amplified after one wash.

    Ikea Ullvide Cotton-Lyocell Sheet Set

The Ikea Ullvide set I tested wasn’t particularly poor, but the Ullvide is a single-ply, 200-thread-count sheet using a short-staple cotton-lyocell blend. To translate: it’s more than likely going to wear down. And fast.

L.L. Bean Pima Cotton Percale Sheet Set

Named the best percale sheets available by Wirecutter, these sheets are very, very good for the price, but they didn’t best Authenticity50’s percale in cool, crispness and they aren’t nearly as affordable as Target’s Threshold percale set. They also fell just short of Boll & Branch’s percale set in soft-crisp balance. We also wasn’t able to verify the material as legitimate Supima, where Authenticity50’s was.

    Parachute Linen Sheet Set

Parachute’s linen sheets occupied much the same space L.L. Bean’s percale set did — very good, but just in between superlatives. A full linen set (fitted sheet, top sheet, pillowcases) from Parachute runs $279 for a queen, where Brooklinen is $50 lower, and we didn’t notice much difference between sleeping, washing and construction. Parachute’s percale sheets performed well early on but lost a bit of crispness after a series of washes.

The 10 Best Dopp Kits for Towing Toiletries

style

Courtesy

A Dopp kit is both a statement of personal style and an immensely practical item. It contains the tools one uses to transform from a shuffling, scruffy zombie to a man that’s both well-groomed and bright-eyed. But not all are made equal. There are leather iterations with long-lasting finishings, waterproof ones with polyester liners, and everything in-between, it seems.

Whether you’re wriggling your kit into a backpack or playing a game of packing Tetris, configuring it inside your carry-on, the right sized option proves vital. Plus, it must look good, too. It’ll go through a lot — and carry quite a bit — so get one capable of not only carrying the essentials you need to clean, shave, and care for your skin and hair but one that’s able to do so without worry — that it’ll bottom out, its contents will seep through or it isn’t big enough for your travel-sized moisturizers, toothpastes and pomades.

Volkswagen Is Finally Building the SUV Americans Really Want

Those of you who spent the weekend polishing your vintage VW with a diaper may not like it, but Volkswagen‘s most successful car in America, commercially speaking, is the Atlas. Indeed, if you took a survey of what Americans wanted with a car and built a vehicle tailored precisely to those recommendations, you’d probably wind up with something a lot like the Atlas: a premium-looking, spacious crossover with third-row seating and all-wheel drive that’s still affordable.

And soon, it appears we’re going to be getting the electric version of that.

As spotted by Autoblog, VW’s CEO Herbert Diess recently posted his speech about the brand’s #NEWAUTO global strategy on LinkedIn. In a section spelling out the segments that VW has covered with new EVs, the speech draft notes that there will be a new ID.8 vehicle corresponding to the Atlas the way the ID.4 crossover relates to the Tiguan.

VW offers no context beyond a footnote stating what we already know; the ID.8 is not for sale yet. But if the ID.8 corresponds to the Atlas’s segment — midsize, three-row family crossover — it could be the spacious family vehicle the EV market has been waiting for.

Three-row crossovers are tremendously practical, but they are inefficient, with many still using naturally-aspirated V6 combustion engines. Hybrids like the Toyota Highlander Hybrid are just filtering into the segment. EV options are even more scarce. Rivian’s three-row R1S should arrive eventually. The only relatively spacious three-row electric family SUV currently available is the Tesla Model X, and it starts at $80,000, approaching the cost of a Land Cruiser or Range Rover. There’s a huge void for a more affordable three-row crossover like the VW ID.8.

Whether VW enthusiasts get the vehicle they want may be another matter. There was some hope VW would bring back an electric wagon to the U.S. based on the ID. Vizzion. But Diess’s speech draft does not refer to it.

Still Waiting for Your Rolex GMT? This Watch Might Tide You Over

Sometimes, you might crave a Pepsi, but have to settle for an RC Cola. Or, in this case, you might want the expensive and difficult-to-get-your-hands-on-anyway Rolex GMT Master II with its cola-brand-red-and-blue bezel, nicknamed the “Pepsi” — and, in this metaphor, RC Cola is an affordable new quartz GMT watch in Timex‘s Waterbury collection.

The bi-colored bezel — which signifies day and night on a 24-hour scale — will always refer back to the original GMT watch from Rolex. Many other watchmakers have employed this colorway and concept before (including Timex itself), however, and Timex nods to its popularity by calling this model the “Traditional GMT.” The overall look will be familiar to Rolex fans at first sight, but Timex has added multiple touches of its own.

This is a notably colorful take on the GMT, with a two-tone approach mixing both steel and gold-toned elements in addition to the Pepsi colors which extend to the blue dial with its red GMT hand (plus, a green seconds hand). Both the “traditional” GMT look as well as the gold-and-steel combo lend a retro feel that fits well with the current trend, and that’s further supported by a moderate 39mm case diameter and the brand’s original Waterbury logo found on the dial, crown and seconds hand counterweight. The pusher at 2 o’clock is used to adjust the GMT (second time zone) hand.

The new Timex Waterbury Traditional GMT is available on a leather strap for a price of $189, or you can double down on the two-tone look and go for a steel bracelet with gold-toned center links for $219. It might not be as refreshing as a Rolex Pepsi, but Timex offers something that’s fun, good-looking, affordable — and that you can have right now.

The Best Workout Shirts of 2021

Just as a strong core is the foundation of any exercise, a solid workout shirt is the foundation of any fitness getup. Sure, an old cotton tee from your alma mater will suit a workout just fine, but it won’t enhance it. It won’t fight odor, control sweat build-up or do anything to prevent chafing.

A quality workout shirt — tee, tank or long sleeve — will do all that and more; it’ll be something you look forward to throwing on, which can sometimes be all the motivation you need to get up and get moving.

Best Overall

Courtesy

Ten Thousand Versatile Shirt

Ten Thousand collected thousands of measurements and fit preferences before making its workout shirt so that when it did, it’d be as close to perfect as can be. One of the learnings from the process was that one size doesn’t fit all, so it made the shirt in three fabric blends to suit all kinds of people. We love the Versatile edition, which feels great and lives up to its name by rolling with all kinds of workouts, from light cardio to heavy lifting.

Lululemon Metal Vent Tech Short Sleeve 2.0

$78.00

Lululemon’s Metal Vent Tech shirts are pricey but peerless in combining breathability and odor-protection in a fabric that doesn’t feel plasticky. They are ultra-comfy, thanks to a design that minimizes seams and positions them where they won’t chafe. Everyone from professional trainers to elite mountain climbers are on board, and having worn them for running, biking and other activities, we can understand why.

Under Armour UA RUSH HeatGear Fitted Short Sleeve

underarmour.com

$30.99

Under Armour claims this shirt’s mineral-infused fabric absorbs the body’s energy and emits it back, increasing blood flow in the muscles for greater endurance. “I don’t know that this shirt actually does what it says,” our tester concedes, “but it fits great, stays cool and is the first one I grab for HIIT and kettlebell workouts.” Right now, this shirt is on sale for nearly 40 percent off, making it the steal of this list.

Best Long Sleever

Courtesy

PATH Projects Cascade LS

The Cascade’s long sleeves make it ideal for working out in cooler temperatures, yet are tight enough to stay up when pushed up. What’s more, this shirt’s Tencelite 19 fabric is incredibly soft and stretchy, dries quickly and fights stink, you don’t have to be dainty about laundering it, and its UPF 50+ rating makes it a sneaky great sun shirt, too.

Best Tank

Nike Dri-FIT ADV Techknit Ultra

nike.com

$70.00

This light, breezy tank with reflective accents is perfect for running, and anything really. “I have exactly one of these but I wash it constantly so I can work out in it as much as possible,” says our tester. “It’s easily the best workout shirt I own for Peloton-ing, running or any exercise that doesn’t involve putting my sweaty back on machines/benches in public spaces.”

Lowest Maintenance

Courtesy

Rhone Reign Short Sleeve

According to one tester, the Reign is “light, comfortable and always fresh no matter how many times I wear it without washing it — probably too many times to admit.” Rhone makes it with a nylon-polyester blend in a raglan construction to keep annoying seems off your shoulders. Perhaps best of all, it comes in lots of colors.

Most Trail Ready

Patagonia Capilene Cool Lightweight

This Patagonia tee is deceptively lightweight at 2.6 ounces, and its 100 percent recycled polyester fabric fights stink far better than other synthetic shirts thanks to a HeiQ odor control treatment. It’s also great at wicking away sweat and drying quickly and has a closer fit than some of the other shirts on this list, which make it ideal for a wide range of activities — including, given the heritage of the brand, hiking and climbing.

Most Swole

Born Tough

Born Tough Core Fit SS Shirt

One of our testers stated that he throws this shirt on when he knows he’s getting into an intense workout. “It’s very comfortable, made of this kinda beefy material and has a look and attitude that weirdly compels me to add an extra five pounds to any lift,” he says. “Nice price too.”

Best for Daily Wear

Courtesy

Mack Weldon Stealth Crew Neck T-Shirt

Thanks to body mapping tech and seamless construction, this shirt fits incredibly well. The fabric — a mix of nylon, polyester and spandex — feels ultra comfy and breathable, while an antimicrobial finish minimizes odor. And while it’s fantastic for tough routines, it’s stylish enough to wear while working from home, running errands and meeting up for brunch.

Lamborghini ready to deliver 10,000 cars this year

Global sales for Lamborghini reached a record-setting 4,852 units during the first six months of 2021, and it seems they aren’t slowing down any time soon, with the order book already filled for the next ten months or so, until April 2022, so if you’ve been thinking about buying a brand new Lamborghini, now might be the time because you’ll be looking at a long wait before taking delivery of your Raging Bull.

When compared to sales in 2020, this year shows a 37% increase in numbers, and even when we take a look at the 2019 figures, they are still 6.6% ahead of that too, making 2021 yet another record-setting year, Automobili Lamborghini SpA seems to be making a habit of breaking their own sales records just about every year, and if they keep this momentum going, Lamborghini is set to reach about 10,000 units by December, which would really be impressive, to say the least.

Let’s take a look at earlier years, about 25 years ago, in 1996, production was a total of 211 units of the Lamborghini Diablo, and that number didn’t really grow too much over the next years, by 2002 there were still only 424 cars leaving the factory gates at Sant’Agata, keep in mind at that time Audi AG already acquired Automobili Lamborghini SpA. A big leap in numbers came for 2003, with a total of 1,305 units of the brand new Murciélago at that time, and that trend kept going for a while with 2,430 units in 2008, but 2009 would become a disaster year for Lamborghini, sales dropped considerably and only 1,515 units were built, 2010 was even worse with another drop, this time to 1,302 … at that time the model line-up was Murciélago, Gallardo, and the Reventón limited edition model.

With the introduction of the Lamborghini Aventador in 2011 things got turned around, it would become obvious the Aventador became an extremely important model to keep Lamborghini going, and sales started to pick up again, rising year on year from 1,602 units in 2011 to 2,530 in 2014, when another milestone car was introduced, the Lamborghini Huracán that boosted sales in 2015 to 3,245, a number that would more than double to 8,205 units by 2019, with all the trouble we had in 2020 sales dropped 9,45%, but it seems 2021 will more than make up for that temporary lapse in growth, and with Lamborghini introducing a fourth model in the line-up after 2025, I’m confident we’ll be seeing well over 10,000 cars per year being built within a few years.

President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann commented: “This exceptional result is a double confirmation for us. It is proof of the solidity and strength of this brand, which is enjoying growing appeal despite a period of continuous challenges and uncertainty. It also endorses the positive reception to our new industrial plan for future electrification of our product range, in which we will invest over 1.5 billion euros by 2024. Lamborghini’s course is set for a period of great transformation, where technological innovation and sustainability will go hand in hand with a focus on maximum product performance and loyalty to the brand’s DNA.”

While you might expect the entire rise in sales is thanks to the Lamborghini Urus, it’s not, in fact, all three models have seen increased sales figures, naturally, the Urus Super SUV makes the largest contribution to these figures with 2,796 units, an increase of 35% over last year, but the Lamborghini Huracán is still selling very well, especially since the updated EVO and EVO RWD model, from January to June 2021 we’ve seen 1,532 V10 Lamborghini being delivered, a 46% increase, and with the Huracán STO starting to be delivered right now I guess we’ll see close to 3,000 Huracán if not more by the end of this year.

With a worldwide network of 168 official dealers in 51 markets, the sales are about equally spread over America, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific, with the United States being the leader in terms of numbers with 1,502 cars, China, Hong Kong, and Macau together accounted for 602 Lamborghinis in total while Germany received 391 cars, the UK 318, Japan 258, a total of 226 Lamborghinis were shipped to the Middle East and their local market in Italy was still selling 197 car during this six month period.

Even the flagship model, usually a rather slow-selling model, managed to increase sales by 21% to a total of 524 units during the first half of 2021, and while they are still building the final examples of the Aventador SVJ and Sián, production of the Sian Roadster will start soon, and then we’ll be seeing the latest model, the Aventador Ultimae, on the assembly line later this year, being a limited edition model with 350 Coupe and 250 Roadster, that only represents a little over six months of production at Sant’Agata … which makes me wonder … what’s next?

There is a rumor we’ll be seeing another limited edition model being unveiled in August, during Monterey Car Week, and if the whispers are right, this will be an homage to the Countach that’s celebrating her 50th anniversary this year, priced at $3,000,000 each with a production run of 112 units to represent the LP112 internal code for the Countach back in the Seventies, power will likely come from the Sián setup, so the NA V12 combined with electric motors for a combined power output of 819 hp, or more … but nothing is official yet, we’ll have to wait a few more weeks to see the latest and greatest from Sant’Agata to be unveiled.

The Best Cars You Can Buy for a Bitcoin Today

The price of a bitcoin is a fickle thing. It rises and falls like the tides…at least, if the sea were controlled not by the steady tug of the moon’s gravity but by the mysterious invisible (or at least translucent) hand of a free market made up largely of tech-savvy investor-nerds and anti-establishment libertarians.

While the decentralized blockchain-based currency started out small more than a decade ago, when its first known transaction was using 10,000 of them to buy a pair of Papa John’s pizzas, it then rose past $1,000 in 2013, fell back below that in 2014, climbed past its old high of $1,242 in early 2017 before shooting up to nearly $20,000 by the end of the year, fell back down below $3,300 roughly 12 months after that, rocketed back up in 2019 and early 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic’s initial market shock brought the value down again, then began a climb back to a new high of $19,850 by the end of November.

Then it took off like a rocket, climbing to $60,000 over the next five months or so, largely on the back of Elon Musk‘s decision to allow Tesla to accept bitcoin as a form of payment. Come May 2021, though, bitcoin dropped like a stone again, falling to around $30,000 as Musk retracted his decision and announced Tesla would sell off its bitcoin holdings around the same time the Chinese government announced it would crack down on cryptocurrencies.

Musk has since retracted his retraction and declared Tesla will take bitcoin again once there’s proof the currency is being ethically mined (in other words, that clean electricity is being used to run the computers doing the energy-intensive work of making new bitcoins), but so far, the price hasn’t rebounded all that much. As of this story’s writing, a bitcoin is worth just a hair under $32,000.

Now, admittedly, if you bought a bunch of bitcoin back when they were a few dollars apiece, that price would still be more than enough to allow you into the ranks of the Lamborghini bitcoin crew. But for the purposes of this story, we’re simply looking at what sort of cool metal you could buy if you had but a single bitcoin to sell. As the price of a bitcoin changes, we’ll update this story accordingly — but for now, here in the summer of 2021, here’s what sorts of cars you could buy for roughly the $32,000 a bitcoin is worth.

Monitor Fitness and Whereabouts Of your Pet With The MoFinderX1 GPS Pet Tracker

GPS trackers are essential for not just misplaced or lost items. They can also help monitor your pet’s whereabouts, especially if they venture too far from home. The MoFinderX1 GPS Pet Tracker works with just about anything you don’t want to lose out of sight.

This innovative device tracks everything important to you: pets, everyday carry, or even a loved one. It offers real-time distance and direction tracking at a range of up to 6.4km. It even has voice tracking and LED lights for easy visibility. Best of all, there is no monthly fee.

Guaranteed as a great substitute for Apple’s AirTag, the MoFinderX1 GPS Pet Tracker does not rely on a sim card, a network, or a mobile phone signal to work.  It uses a one-press precise positioning system to get the exact location and distance. It even provides GPS directions.

Meanwhile, an accompanying app for Android or iOs lets you set a safe zone up to 3 km and alerts you when the tracked item, person, or pet leaves that zone. The app also lets you record a ten-second voice message that would work well with your pet. A press on the controller’s “positioning” button will play the recording. The app, like a Fitbit, also records distance covered by your pet so you’re able to monitor fitness goals. One controller can connect to up to four trackers so it’s great for families and friends.

The MoFinderX1 GPS Pet Tracker has a standby time of seven days and a working time of up to 14 hours. It is outdoor adventure-ready with its waterproof construction. The controller, on the other hand, comes with an easy clip and snap design and can last for 26 hours in working mode and ten days on standby.

In response to the growing popularity of the vintage rubber straps, various companies have resurrected the design and begun producing their own variants. In recent years, however, Tropic returned as a brand produced by the Synchron Watch Group which also makes Isofrane straps and Aquadive watches. Available for 20mm lug widths in black, brown, navy and olive colors, the straps are made in Italy from vulcanized rubber which is hypoallergenic and resistant to temperature changes.

Knockaround Mile Highs

Want the classic aviator look but don’t want to drop serious cash on a pair of shades that you’re just gonna sit on? Go with a pair of Mile Highs from Knockaround. They hit all the classic aviator notes — think tortoiseshell accents and gold-colored frames — without breaking the bank. Of course, they still come with UV400-level lenses for serious sun protection. And at $30, you won’t have to freak out if you leave ’em at the beach this summer.

Gerber Compleat Onyx

Instead of combining fork and spoon into one ineffective tool, Gerber kept them separate to perform at their individual best. The spoon is slightly angular, while the fork is spork-reminiscent, but its longer tines keep it just forky enough for stabbing hunks of food. The Compleat also comes with a small tool that works as a bottle opener, a can opener and more, as well as a multi-use spatula that has a rubberized edge. The other end of this spatula is where the Compleat all comes together, literally: all three of the other utensils nest neatly together to form one compact tool.

Pioneer Carry Ion Bifold

This card holder is cut from 10XD nylon ripstop fabric, which is made from a polyethylene yarn that, per weight, is ten times stronger than steel. The material is incredibly durable and lightweight, and it repels both dirt and water. Utilizing FutureForm core technology, the finished wallet keeps it shape without conventional stitching. It’s just the right size for daily necessities — it holds between four and six cards or folded bills in three slots.

Opinel No. 08

Opinel’s folding No.8 is about as simple as a pocket knife gets: it has a 3.25-inch steel blade, a wooden handle and a rotating collar that locks it open or closed. Nevertheless, the knife has become an icon since its release in 1890 and is remarkably handsome despite an apparent lack of over-the-top features. You can get one with a carbon steel blade or with premium wood handles — all of them are nearly as affordable.

MORE POCKET KNIVES

Graf Lanz Bierfilzl

Since the 19th century, Bavarian beer halls have used felt pads as coasters, absorbing condensation and spillage, and protecting wooden surfaces. Los Angeles-based company Graf & Lantz has updated the bierfilzl, or beer felt (the Bavarian catch-all term for coaster), for contemporary homes. They come in over 30 colors and are sure to add a contemporary vibe to any home.

Kitch Silicone Ice Tray

This is a no-brainer: larger ice cubes take longer to melt, saving your cocktail from turning into a sad, watered-down mess. These silicone trays are also easy to wash in the dishwasher, come in a two-pack, and are cheap enough that you could kit out an entire party with extra-large ice cubes in their Negronis.

The Fastest Way to Make Hot Coffee Cold Costs $40 on Amazon

George Howell wasn’t sure how to make iced coffee work for his esteemed chain of coffee roasters and cafés. The way he sees it, iced coffee is vastly better than cold brew (and he’s not alone), but making it is a pain — you either have to pour hot coffee over ice and dilute the coffee with melting water, or wait for a blast chiller to bring a batch of hot coffee down to 40 or so degrees (which could take 45 minutes to an hour).

Then Howell found the Coldwave.

The $40 pitcher, readily available on Amazon, comes with a plastic insert fitted with an array of white tubes filled with water. Freeze the insert (takes about 8 to 10 hours, usually), pour fresh hot coffee into the pitcher and drop the insert into the coffee. A minute and a half later, you have iced coffee.

Despite Howell’s misgivings, you can use this device just as easily for cold brew. Most cold brew recipes explicitly insist on keeping the mixture at room temperature while brewing so as to not hinder extraction. This means cold brew is room temperature upon finishing the half-day brew cycle. If you don’t like pouring it over ice and creating an inexact dilution, you can chill it in a Coldwave before diluting.

This-Is-the-Fastest-Way-to-Chill-Hot-Coffee-Gear-Patrol-inline-2

Howell explains that the consumer Coldwave isn’t an elegant fix to his cafés’ commercial problem, and it certainly isn’t the end-all, be-all solution; after one, 16-ounce chill — about three good-sized cups — the insert must be rinsed off and re-frozen. But he thinks it’s just fine for iced coffee at home.

“It’s the best gadget for this I’ve found so far,” Howell says. “It’s dead simple and … it does the job faster and cleaner than anything else I’ve used recently.”

For home brewing during the warmer months, it still isn’t as easy as batch-brewing cold brew and keeping it in the fridge for a week. But it does allow you to brew your regular pot of hot coffee and chill it without adding much to your morning routine.

“This levels the playing field for iced coffee,” Howell says.

This Clever, Compact Cooler Just Might Be the One You Actually Need

Given the rise of thick-walled, grizzly-proof coolers that keep ice frozen for days on end, it’s easy to forget that smaller options do exist. Besides, many of us don’t need ice to stay solid for more than a few hours, and really, when was the last time you were in grizzly bear country? Colorado-based RovR does make a cooler for those times and places — it made our list of the best you can buy — but the company also offers one that’s perfect for picnics and short outings called the KeepR.

RovR’s KeepR, fully stocked.

Rovr

The KeepR does the same thing as a cooler, but think of it more like a mash-up between a picnic basket and an ice bucket. The KeepR has a lidded core compartment that holds ice and is surrounded by separate sections for stashing bottles, cans, snacks and whatever else you might want to keep frosty on an outing. Dry things stay dry — no soggy sandwich bread here — and everything stays cold. It’s easy to fill and, thanks to its picnic- and cookout-friendly size, easy to empty, too.
