Tesla Model S Plaid Quicker than F8 Tributo and Huracan EVO at Laguna Seca

New images of the upcoming Tesla Model S Plaid/Plaid+ have emerged from Laguna Seca raceway as it undergoes its final testing phase. The images of the prototype have been accompanied by unconfirmed reports of a possible lap record of 1:30:XX minutes. This would make it faster that several supercars including the new Porsche 992 Turbo S, Ferrari F8 Tributo and the Lamborghini Huracan Evo.

The Model S Plaid is a 1,020hp super sedan with a 0-60mph time of 1.99s, and a 1/4 mile time of 9.23s at 155 mph. The top speed is 200mph. These figures will make it quicker than cars such as the McLaren 765LT and the Porsche 992 Turbo S. A Bugatti Chiron will complete the 1/4 mile in 9.4s albeit with a faster trap speed of 158mph.

The company says the Model S Plaid will be the quickest production car once its launched. Deliveries will begin in 2021 for the ‘regular’ Plaid version, while a long range Plaid+ version will be made available later in the year. This version will be priced from. $139,990

US Supercar Collector Buys a Bugatti with Dogecoin – a Bugatti Bolide

Bugatti Bolide Dogecoin

Dogecoin touched it’s all time highs in the first week of May, and among the first people to take advantage of that gain was a US-based supercar and hypercar collector. He goes by the username @cococulture_ on Instagram, and on 8th May he announced that he had sold 25% of his DOGE coins to order a Bugatti Bolide. The meme coin had been trading at highs of up to 0.724658 on that day before taking a dip a few hours later, with some people speculating that his major sale could have triggered the dip.

Obviously a DOGE whale, the collector decided to hold his remaining 75% for another winning day. His move comes weeks after Elon Musk called upon major DOGE whales to dump their coins in order to improve it’s overall health. He even offered to “pay actual $” to anyone who dumped their coins in a provable manner – and buying a Bugatti with Dogecoin is probably the biggest gesture towards Musk’s call. According to data collected by Dogecoin Rich List, one whale owns 28.7% of all Dogecoin, while the top 12 whales own 50% of all available DOGE.

The Bugatti Bolide is a track only hypercar from Bugatti inspired by race cars from 1920s and 1930s from the French car maker and most recently by the Bugatti Vision Grand Turismo. It even has the same height as a Type 35 and is rumored to be the last Bugatti powered by the iconic 8.0L W16 quad turbo engine. Bugatti has not indicated how many units they will build, and judging by their recent pricing strategy it could cost northwards of $10 million. The Centodieci costs $9 million, the Divo $6 million and the LaVoiture Noire $18 million plus.

Powered by the same W16 engine used on the Chiron, the Bolide has an increased output of 1.850hp and 1,850nm of torque. This results to an incredible power-to-weight ratio of 0.67kg per hp. Using simulations, Bugatti says the Bolide has a top speed of 500km/h plus and will lap the Nurburgring-Nordschleife in just 5:23.1 minutes.

To improve air flow, the roof scoop features the same design as a golf ball, incorporating dimples on the surface of the intake. These dimples are active and will open and close depending on the speed. They (dimples) will bulge out at high speeds and smoothen out at low speeds.

Manny Khoshbin’s 1 of 1 Bugatti Chiron habillé par Hermès

A special commission by Manny Khoshbin that saw the collaboration between two French luxury brands – Bugatti and Hermes. The result was a unique 1 of 1 Bugatti Chiron.

This Bugatti Chiron was individualized in almost all aspects including the exterior color, interior designs and the unique details inside and outside the vehicle. The teams in Molsheim and Paris worked together to bring the application of custom colors, fabrics and materials into reality.

The color scheme of the Chiron was designed by Hermes to match the leather interior which is finished in ‘craie’ whereas the exterior of the Chiron has been completed in off-white, chalk-derived hue envelopes making it a one exterior color vehicle compared to other Bugatti Chirons that consists of two colors for contrast. The ‘Craie’ shade used in the interior of the car was made by Hermes.

In addition, the ‘Craie’ shade has also been used on the rear bumper, all mesh covers, trim parts and also on the ‘classique’ alloy wheels of the Bugatti.

The exterior of the Bugatti Chiron habillé par Hermès also features a horseshoe grille customized with the H monogram from the Parisian brand signature and ‘courbettes’ motif design under the rear wing.

The ‘courbettes’ design consists of sketches of rearing horses to emphasize the immense 1,500PS output power of the Bugatti Chiron, this design was personally chosen by Mr Khoshbin. In addition, Mr Khoshbin also chose the ‘sky view’ glass roof adding two fixed glass panels above the driver and the passenger.

The original Hermes material in ‘Courbettes’ design can also be found on the middle console plate, centre console tray and on the door cards. The exposed engine bay on the top side of the vehicle remains as the only exterior part not finished in ‘Craie’. The brake callipers are finished in ‘ Italian Red’ whereas the door sills have an aluminium finish.

Almost all the materials used for the interior have been designed by Hermes, the interior features the shade ‘Craie’ on the leather seats, inner signature line, centre console, door clasps and the roof and rear panels. The centre console, dashboard and other parts of the interior have been finished in ‘Ecru’ leather developed by Bugatti. The carpets have been finished in ‘Beige’.

Mr Khoshbin recently added a Hermes McLaren Speedtail to his collection.

Brabus Tuning: 2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 is Now an 800hp Monster

A new Brabus 800 based on the 2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4MATIC+ has been unveiled. The E63 AMG sedan has been enhanced both visually and in terms of driving dynamics. The vehicle has been equipped with custom naked-carbon aerodynamic enhancement parts and a set of hi-tech 21-inch forged wheels.

The E63 S 4MATIC+ sedan is powered by a 4.0litre V8 twin-turbo engine that generates a standard output of 450kW\ 612hp and 850Nm of torque. The new and tested Brabus B40S-800 performance kit increases the power output of the vehicle by adding 138kW/ 188hp and an extra 150Nm of torque, all this comes with a 3 year or 100,000km mile tuning warranty.

The performance upgrade equipped by Brabus enables the E63 S 4MATIC+ to produce a maximum output of 588kW/ 800hp at 6,600rpm, 1000Nm peak torque at a low 3,600rpm and achieve the acceleration from 0-100km/h in just 3.0 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 300km/h. The Brabus 800 tops the charts as one of the most powerful sedans and station wagons in the world.

Specially configured high-performance turbochargers which features a larger compressor unit and an enhanced core assembly with reinforced axial bearings that produce 1.6 bar maximum boost pressure has been developed for the vehicle to live up to the Brabus 800 design.

In addition, a Brabus plug-and-play PowerXtra module is also available and has been connected to the engine management system. This auxiliary control unit enables a special mapping for injection, ignition and boost pressure control. The vehicle has also been equipped with special carbon air intakes developed and merged on the right and left side of the radiator grille to ensure the engine is supplied with sufficient air.

The driving performance has been improved by the combination of the high-performance Brabus engine, the nine-speed automatic transmission and the 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. The nine-speed automatic transmission can be shifted either manually or automatically via Brabus Race aluminium paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

A Brabus Start-Stop memory system is available for customers who prefer to deactivate the automatic standard start-stop system permanently at a touch of a button.

Brabus has equipped the E63 S 4MATIC+ with a high-performance stainless-steel exhaust system with four steel/ carbon tailpipes that reduces the exhaust backpressure to ensure an optimized power supply. The exhaust flaps can control the exhaust sound, for instance, ‘coming home’ mode is discreet and quiet whereas ‘Sport mode’ is loud and powerful.

The sporty appearance of the vehicle is as a result of the enhanced naked carbon aerodynamic component on the radiator grille and front spoiler which are available in either gloss or matte finish. The rear spoiler on the trunk lid is shaped and designed to generate downforce on the rear axle and ensure optimal balance. The carbon diffuser inserts for the rear fascia also contributes to the sporty appearance by perfectly framing the tailpipes of the sport exhaust system.

The E63 S 4MATIC+ has been fitted with a set of 21 inch custom alloy wheels, the vehicle pictured features Brabus Monoblock ‘Platinum Edition’ Z forged wheels in the same contrasting color to match the radiator grille. A Brabus Stainless-steel scuff plate with backlit Brabus logo that changes color to match the interior ambient is available as an exclusive specialty interior refinement from Brabus. The cockpit also features aluminium door pins, and pedals.

The Brabus upholstery shop produces custom Brabus fine leather including Alcantara available in a variety of colors, genuine carbon inlays and precious wood which can be tailor-made and finished in different colors and design.

The Brabus 800 can be ordered as a sedan or wagon

Rise and Fall of the Godzilla: Nissan GT-R and its Dimming Popularity

Flashback

In 2001 Nissan showed a concept vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show, previewing the next GT-R and this was about the same time when the R34 GT-R production was approaching its end. The R34 GT-R production only lasted 4 years, back then GT-Rs were only produced for the local market. With the new concept, Nissan envisioned a model that would be sold across the seas in the USA and Europe.

That concept was refreshed once more in 2005 long after the Skyline GT-R production had ended. The new concept was closer to the production model, with Nissan insisting the production model would be 80% based on this concept.

At the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan lived up to their promise and revealed a production ready Nissan GT-R. They dropped the ‘Skyline’ name and positioned the new GT-R as the flagship model, a supercar, a Japanese supercar, born and bred. The Skyline name would continue to appear on regular Nissan models starting with the V35.

The new Nissan GT-R became the first GT-R to be made available in multiple markets outside of Japan, they included the US, Canada and Europe. Japanese cars were available from December 2007, USA cars from July 2008 and European cars from March 2009. It was quite a big deal, Nissan introduced GT-R service centers in these markets with trained technicians to support new ownership. Like AMG the engines are hand built, in this case by special technicians in Yokohama, they were only four at the beginning and have a special name – Takumi Craftsmens.

In Japan, pre-orders stood at 2,282 after 2 months of official announcement and over 2000 for the then new Skyline Coupe.

The Rise

Immediately after release the GT-R was both a success in the media and sales wise. Key to this success was the pricing strategy that Nissan used at the time. The R34 GT-R was a very affordable model by the time production was brought to an end, and very few markets allowed proper importation of these cars. When the new GT-R was introduced, it brought with it a new definition of ‘JDM sports car’, redefining the JDM tuning culture and most important, introducing a new exotic character to JDM sports cars. Shirō Nakamura who was head creative officer at the time insisted that the GT-R is not a copy of any European sports car, which was very true.

Using USA pricing as reference, the 2008 Nissan GT-R had a start price of $69,850 for the base model. It was praised for being the most affordable supercar at the time, it had supercar performance for a bargain. It was compared to the Porsche 911 Turbo, both cars had six cylinder turbocharged engines producing 480hp at the time. But the Porsche’s price was almost double that of the GT-R, with a MSRP of $130k.

The performance also contributed to its popularity, at this point the internet had clans of GT-R fan boys who helped drive its popularity even higher. And for a good reason, not many cars at the time did 0-100km/h in 3.8s (or less) and a top speed of 313km/h for just $69k. Sorry, let me rephrase that, not many supercars offered this kind of performance for a price of just $69k. YouTube was filled with videos of $200k+ cars getting ‘humiliated’ by this newly introduced Japanese supercar.

Gidi ETS GT-R 3000hp
Gidi ETS GT-R 3000hp

Then came the tuning culture, if there has ever been an opportune moment for tuners of the 21st century, it has been through the Nissan GT-R. Drag strips have never been the same as tuning shops began fielding heavily built GT-Rs. From 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile speed events, the GT-R has proven to be a reliable platform for speed and big power mods. ETS and AMS are some of the most popular GT-R tuning shops, with their GT-Rs featuring power mods of up to 3000hp. We have even done a post on the fastest GT-Rs in the world, the post is now outdated but it should give you a vivid idea.

Fastest Nissan GT-Rs in the World 2017-18

Ingenuity also did play a role in the initial success. See, for most new European sports cars, early feedback is always something like “looks like a corvette”, “looks like a Ferrari and McLaren combined” or “that’s an Audi underneath”. With the GT-R, everything from design to the powertrain was proudly Japanese. And deservedly so, as this was a fate that required an intense sense of belonging, nationalism, pride and deeply rooted traditions.

So, if you wanted a cheap/affordable supercar with the performance of a Ferrari, a Nissan GT-R came to mind. Second hand prices were also very attractive, ranging between $30-40k for the early 2008-2010 models. The first facelift came in 2011, right about the time when sales started dwindling.

The Fall

Pricing of the Nissan GT-R began to change drastically after the first year. Below is a pricing table, with USA pricing as a reference.

Nissan GT-R prices 2008-2021

Now, there are a few obvious reasons as to why the pricing increased over the years. Key among them being car prices around the world have increased too especially among sports cars; likewise, cost of production and cost of living has increased. Nissan have also made several changes to the GT-R over the years, mainly focusing on performance and looks.

But even so, the GT-R was no longer the affordable car it used to be. Second hand prices began to shoot up too. In 2009 the price increased by almost $7,000, that’s quite a hefty price increase for a car that is virtually the same with model year being the only change. By 2015, the price had passed the $100k. The GT-R officially became a $100k car, that’s territory associated with European sports cars. Not even fan boys could explain the reason behind that strategy. To add salt to the injury, the price hit $110k 2 years later. While all this was happening, sales figures were telling a different story – and numbers don’t lie.

Nissan GT-R Sales Numbers USA and Europe 2008-2020

US and EU consumer habits are different, while there is a ready market for a $100k Japanese sports car in the US, there is a hefty competition in Europe for the same price bracket. In that regard, European sales were the first to show signs of weakness over the years followed by the US sales.

At one point in 2018, Nissan did reduce the price to $99k (a moment of panic i suppose) but this had little effect, it was no longer the same $69k car. They increased the price once more after realizing the strategy was fruitless. One can only wonder if the GT-R should have remained the same 480hp sports car from 2008 with only minimal design changes, and maybe the price would still be under $80k. Solo un pensamiento…

Speaking of changes, it’s hard to imagine the Nissan GT-R has been in production for over 10 years, 14 years to be exact. I mean, for a sports car worth $100k plus, the least we expected is a new generation to match rival offerings. I know, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it , pero aún…

Original rivals were the 997 Turbo, 2 generations have come so far and the current 992 Turbo is hardly a rival given how far Porsche has pushed the limits with the 992 model. Or is it?. The sports car industry is ruthless at the moment, with mixed emotions stemming from current electrification vs ICE storm. There are new players born everyday and so many options for consumers willing to spend $100k on a car. The GT-R has had countless facelifts in both standard and Nismo guise, but facelifts come at a cost especially when the competition is steering the market towards a different direction.

Then comes the interior, you have to agree that once a product like a sports car enters the $100k price range, then a lot is required of it. Japanese interiors have never been the nicest in the industry, that’s because they focus on affordable mass produced cars. No problem in that, a $30k crossover like a Rav4 that is reliable till the end of times? The interior is least of our worries when it comes to such cars, reliability is what you want in a daily driver for that price range.

The GT-R interior has never been one to win an award either, but for the initial price it was sold at nobody cared for plastic inside a supercar. In fact, Corvettes have featured similar interiors over the years but the popularity lives on due to the pricing. The only difference is that GM doesn’t increase Corvette pricing by 10 grand every 2 years, the new C8 for example has a lower starting price than some averagely spec’d European hot hatches.

Look, nobody is asking for a Maybach interior in a GT-R, but if consumers are to pay $100k plus for a sports car then we could do with a much nicer interior, there is already too much plastic in the oceans.

So What’s Next?

We expect a new generation of the GT-R in the next 2-3 years, could be more seeing that they just revealed a new facelift for the Nismo as model year 2022. The GT-R has the longest production run of any modern supercar, timing has been unfortunate too. If Nissan is to replace the current generation, they have a lot to consider including electrification to beat tight regulations on emissions. The GT-R has never lacked in the power department, and hybridization would only mean more weight for an already heavy sports car, this and other factors could be the reason Nissan has delayed it’s replacement.

But can the Godzilla get back to its former days of glory? Of course, there is always room for a new affordable supercar. Keyword being affordable, go back to the very basics used in 2008 during introduction. If GM can do it with the Corvette for decades, then Nissan can do it too. If the current pricing strategy is to be used on the successor, then we are looking at a starting price of $120-140k for a base GT-R, that would require some major improvements over the current model for consumers to consider it in large numbers.

One thing remains unchanged, the exterior design of the Nissan GT-R stays true to tradition, unique and genuine. We can only hope that the successor will not fall victim to the bland nature of current design trends.

McLaren Artura Performance Figures [0-100km/h, ¼ mile, Top Speed]

McLaren has finally revealed the performance numbers of their new hybrid supercar, the Artura.

The McLaren Artura is powered by a 3.0L V6 twin-turbo engine that generates 585hp and 585Nm of torque. This engine is 190mm shorter, 220mm narrower and 50kg lighter in weight compared to McLaren’s 4.0L V8 twin-turbo engine. The 120 degree twin-turbocharged M630 unit delivers unmatched performance and ensures compact packaging. A 180-degree angle was considered but dismissed because it raised the centre of gravity as well as the crankshaft.

The wide angle V6 cylinders allows the turbochargers to fit within the banks in a ‘hot vee’ configuration which ensures a less restrictive exhaust layout. The hybrid system is completed by an E-Motor that produces an extra 95hp and 225nm of torque, for a total of 680hp and 810nm of torque when combined with the ICE.

0-100km/h 3.0s
0-200km/h 8.3s
0-300km/h 21.5s
1/4 Mile 10.7s
0-60mph 3.0s
Top Speed 330km/h (205 mph)

A 7.4kWh Five-module Lithium Ion energy dense battery pack provides an electric-only capability and is positioned low down behind the driver. The Artura has an electric range of 30km. This position optimises the centre of gravity, polar moment of inertia and also improves the dynamic agility of the car.

The Hybrid battery is fitted in a cooling manifold together with the new electric heating, air conditioning system and ventilation which are also used to control the air temperatures in the cabin. The batteries of the car are thermally controlled via dielectric oil, a technology used to maintain the E-motor at operating temperatures that delivers high performance.

The batteries take approximately 2.5hrs to charge from 0-80% when charged through EVSE socket and can never truly run out of power even when parked for a long period, the management also ensures that the battery units remain in peak conditions at all times. The battery unit comes with a warranty of years or 75,000km. An integrated power unit(IPU) acts as a DC/DC converter for the 12v system and minimises the weight.

The engine of the Artura powers the rear wheels through an eight-speed transmission that is designed for optimised packaging, the length of the gear cluster has been reduced by 40mm.

The driver can adjust the electric motor deployment to prioritise range, power or to shut off the internal combustion engine for a silent drive. Energy harvesting is enabled from the combustion engine and the battery can be charged from low to 80% within minutes under normal driving conditions which ensures that the driver can shift to electric-only mode.

First Road Legal Pagani Zonda Revolucion: It’s Happening!

TopCar Design has an impressive Pagani collection that boasts of 6 cars including a Huayra Imola – one of the most expensive new Paganis with a start price of $5.4 million. They have recently acquired a 1 of 5 Pagani Zonda Revolucion, car #4 of 5. This is strictly a track car that Pagani introduced back in 2012 as an updated version of the R, another track only model.

After taking ownership, they approached UK based automotive company Lanzante Limited to perform a road legal conversion on the Zonda Revolucion. Lanzante is famed for converting many track only hypercars to road legal status such as the McLaren F1 GTR, McLaren P1 GTR and more. According to TopCar Design, Lanzante is in the process of studying the car ahead of the actual conversion, a list of changes will be made available in the near future.

After conversion, the Zonda Revolucion will effectively get a road license and run on UK plates. They will showcase it around Europe via events organized by the Supercar Owners Circle. Being an extremely rare car, prices start from around 6 million euros – the value is expected to go up once it receives road legal status.

The Zonda Revolucion is powered by the same 6.0L naturally aspirated V12 found on the R variant, now developing 800hp and 730nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed sequential gearbox. Thanks to the use of carbon-titanium monocoque, the Zonda Revolucion only weighs 1,070 kg.

The Marbella based tuning company also has a Zonda HP Barchetta on order, car #3 of 3. This is the most expensive Pagani model to date, it has a start price of $17.6 million and was created to celebrate Horacio’s 60th birthday.

Kia EV6 GT: Full Electric Crossover Coupe Revealed with 576hp

Kia has entered the BEV world with a new crossover coupe named the EV6 GT. This is the first full EV by Kia built on the company’s new platform that is solely dedicated to BEVs.

Top of the range and most interesting to us is the AWD GT version powered by two 430kW motors. The output is rated at 576hp and 740nm of torque, allowing for a 0-100km/h time of 3.5s. Top speed is capped at 260km/h in this high performance model. It even comes with an electronic-Limited Slip Differential software for drivers to master ride control and handling under different settings.

Kia also offers entry EV6 models including a GT-Line, with a choice of long range or standard battery packs. The EV6 GT is only available with a long-range (77.4 kWh) battery pack, while entry models can be optioned with a standard-range (58.0 kWh) or the long range battery pack. The regular EV6 can be ordered as AWD or RWD. When paired with the long range battery pack the RWD version has a electric range of 510km.

The 77.4 kWh RWD version is powered by a single electric motor rated at 229hp and an electric range of 510km, while the 77.4 kWh AWD has 2 electric motors powering each axle and rated at 325hp/605nm. 0-100km/h in this AWD version is 5.2s.

The 58.0 kWh AWD EV6 is powered by 2 electric motors rated at 235hp and 605nm torque, 0-100km/h is achieved in 6.2s. On the 58.0 kWh RWD EV6, the single electric motor powering the rear axle is rated at 167hp.

Kia offers both 800V and 400V charging options without the need for additional hardware. The faster 800V option can charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes and 0 to 100km range in under 4.5s – this is when pairing the RWD with the 77.4-kWh battery option. The EV6 also utilizes Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) which enables vehicle-to-load (V2L) or the ability to discharge energy from the vehicle. This means one can power appliances using the EV6 while on a camping trip for example.

The new V2L function can discharge up to 3.6kW of power, which is then used to power electrical appliances including TVs, water heating, lighting and camping equipment. Even with 35% charge left, one can still tow up to 1600kg.

The EV6 also benefits from Kia’s energy harvesting methods including a heat pump that collects heat from the cooling system. This enables the car to operate in extreme cold weather (such as minus 7 degrees) with the same efficiency of a 25 degrees situation. A smart regenerative braking system is also used to harvest kinetic energy when braking, this can be done using paddle shifters or automatically through the system’s auto mode.

The EV6 comes with key driver assistance systems (ADAS) including Safe Exit Assist (SEA) which warns the passenger of any incoming car from behind before they exit the EV6; Lane Following Assist (LFA) that helps keep the EV6 in its lane and the Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) which is an advanced cruise control system.

Glickenhaus Reveals $2.4 Million 007S Hypercar: Nurburgring Under 6 Mins

SCG 007S

Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus has just revealed a road legal version of their SCG 007 Le Mans Hypercar, it’s called the 007S with ‘S’ denoting street. In July 2018, SCG became the first team to register interest for the new LMH class (Le Mans Hypercar) with the 007 race car, they plan to race in 2021 alongside Toyota’s GR010 Hybrid. Peugeot and Ferrari will join the LMH category in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

The new SCG 007S will bring the same race technology used on the Le Mans car to the streets, as a result it has a predicted Ring time of under 6 minutes. It will be fully legal in the US as well as SVA/TUV approved for markets in Europe and the Middle East.

It features a 3-seat configuration with a center-mounted driver’s seat and weighs only 2,800 lbs including fluids and fuel. Exact powertrain details have not been revealed yet but the output is confirmed to be 1,400hp. The race version uses a 3.5L V8 twin-turbo engine made by Pipo Moteurs from France, output here is capped at 670hp as per the new Le Mans Hypercar rules.

Glickenhaus insists that the street version will have A/C that “will work in bumper to bumper traffic and on the Long Island Expressway on a 100 degree day”. Their motto has always been “If it can’t race the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it’s not that hyper.” Details on the number of units have not been revealed but each SCG 007S will have a starting price of $2.3-$2.4 million depending on the market.

Pagani Huayra R: Track Only Hypercar with $3.1 Million Price Tag Revealed

Meet the new Pagani Huayra R, a track only hypercar based on the road legal Huayra model and limited to just 30 units. With fewer regulations to meet, the engine is now naturally aspirated just like the Zonda R. Each unit will cost interested buyers $3.1 million excluding taxes.

The new Huayra R comes 12 years after the reveal of the Zonda R back at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. A year before this, Pagani was already working on the Huayra road car and it was the desire for freedom that brought about the Zonda R. As the Huayra life cycle comes to and end, Horacio and his team have decided to repeat the same feat – desire for freedom through the new Huayra R.

This will be a track only hypercar and the most extreme Pagani model to date. We expect to see a few road legal conversions, similar to what select owners of the F1 GTR, Senna GTR, P1 GTR and FXX K did to their cars.

Pagani wanted to bring back F1 sounds of the 80s through the new Huayra R, they teamed up with engine specialists HWA AG to create a 6.0L naturally aspirated V12 solely for this new model. The regular Huayra has a 6.0L V12 Biturbo from AMG that sounds completely different from the naturally aspirated unit. This new ‘V12-R’ produces 850hp at 8250rpm and a maximum torque of 750nm between 5500 to 8300 rpm. This power is then transferred to the rear wheels via a new 6-speed sequential gearbox. The engine weighs only 198kg and can rev up to 9,000rpm. Service will be required after every 10,000km.

The exhaust system is made of Inconel just like F1 cars, and can be fitted with mufflers to meet sound regulations at racing tracks. The weight has been reduced to the bare minimum, tipping the scale at just 1,050kg. The monocoque is made of both Carbo-Titanium and Carbo-Triax materials.

The suspension features independent double wishbone made of forged aluminum alloy with helical springs and electronically controlled shock absorbers. It rides on 19 inch wheels all round made of APP forged monolithic aluminum alloy. These wheels are then matched to Pirelli P Zero slick tires.

Rivals include the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12, Aston Martin Valkyrie Pro and the Gordon Murray T.50s – all track only hypercars.

Whole Dashboard is a Screen: Mercedes-Benz Reveals the HyperScreen

Normally around this time of the year we are attending the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) where we get to see various advancements in technology from companies around the world. But for reasons well known to everyone, that will only take place virtually this year. That said, Mercedes-Benz has just revealed what they call a “HyperScreen” ahead of the CES 2021 virtual show.

To be featured first on the upcoming EQS, HyperScreen will use the latest MBUX technology and will run from left to right of the entire dashboard or simply across the the A pillars. Screens have been the latest interior trend in cars, even the latest S-Class took it a notch higher with a much larger screen (we thought the W222 had a bigger screen!). It all started as a showcase feature on concept and electric cars, Tesla made it mainstream and since then multiple cars have adopted the idea of huge screens in the car.

Mercedes Big Screen

For Mercedes-Benz, the screen technology goes beyond ‘trendy’ and ‘cool’. By using the 2nd generation MBUX technology, they have added a load of features that seek to set them apart from any other car using big screens.

Here are some highlight features of the new HyperScreen:
– At the core of it, advanced AI controls the whole screen.
– It measures an increadible 141-centimetre wide, 2,432.11 cm squared are for the passengers.
– It uses a curved design, and will be an optional extra. (will be standard later just like Widescreen)
– Zero Layer concept will eliminate submenus and voice commands, only the most important apps are presented to the driver accordingly to avoid unnecessary scrolling. See it as an advanced version of Spotify’s car mode.
– Passenger Display now available, like on certain Ferrari models but in a mega style. It’s only active if the passenger seat is occupied, otherwise an animated wallpaper is displayed.

The MBUX HyperScreen will debut on the EQS saloon, the full electric S-Class.
