Quick Take: Announced for Baselworld 2019, Breitling has done a nice job recreating one of its early iconic Navitimers from 60 years ago. The new Breitling Navitimer Ref. 806 1959 Re-Edition is moderately sized and well proportioned, features an in-house movement, and brings back the classic “beaded” bezel. The brand has been increasingly retro-focused, in line with industry trends, but this is the brand’s first actual modern “re-edition,” and we can expect more to follow.

Who It’s For: Watch enthusiasts remain generally happy to see the the cool designs of past decades return with updated modern features. The Navitimer is one of the most recognizable chronograph watches in history, and it’s hard to go wrong with such a popular vintage model. Fans of the brand and the Navitimer will be particularly pleased, and many will appreciate also that it comes in just under 41mm wide and remains reasonably thin (13.43mm) for a chronograph.

Key Features: Breitling stayed faithful to the original in just about every way, including the use of an acrylic crystal over what would be the more modern choice of sapphire. Water resistance has been increased to 30m, and the brand has added Super-LumiNova to the dial, though in a vintage-inspired, creamy hue. Breitling says that the number of “beads” for bezel actually matches the number found on the 1959 original at exactly 94 pieces.

Inside the Navitimer is a modern Breitling in-house B09 manually-wound chronograph movement. This movement is newly developed based on the brand’s automatic B01 movement and will be used for future re-editions. The B09 has around 70 hours of power reserve and, like all Breitling movements, is COSC chronometer-certified. The Breitling Navitimer Ref. 806 1959 Re-Edition will be available later in spring 2019, limited to 1,959 pieces, for a price of $8,600 each.
