Quick Take: Materials are what characterize this particular Rolex GMT Master II. In a white gold case, it combines the popular red-and-blue ceramic “Pepsi” bezel with a silvery gray meteorite dial for a recognizable but distinct look that sets it apart from its sporty siblings. It joins a Daytona and last year’s Day-Date watches, which also featured meteorite dials and white gold cases. It’s a a formula we might see expanded to other Rolex lines in the future, because the result is undoubtedly controversial and probably collectible.

Who It’s For: Meteorite gives the otherwise sporty GMT Master II a lavish look, placing it in the company of sometimes flamboyant and diamond-decked Rolexes worn by celebrities and elite collectors. Meteorite dials can be found in a range of watches across the industry as a popular way to offer something a little different — meteorites have a cool stories and offer interesting organic dial patterns. Here, other elements make it immediately identifiable as a Rolex, but the meteorite dial makes it stand out as a special Rolex.

Key Features: A meteorite dial is cool because it’s rare, comes from outer space (at least, more recently than most other things found on Earth), and provides an interesting look. Otherwise it is very similar to the other GMT Master II watches recently released like this year’s “Batman” and, more specifically, last year’s “Pepsi” model. It features the same 40mm case size and the Rolex automatic 3285 movement. Unlike those watches, which come in steel on Jubilee bracelets, this meteorite version comes on an Oyster bracelet and is made from weighty 18k white gold. Which is why it costs a whopping $38,400.
