Quick Take: The new Aquanaut released for Baselworld 2019 clearly has Patek Philippe’s recognizable DNA, but with an exceedingly sporty and fashionable urban styling. With the look of a mini wrist grenade in “khaki green” with a matching rubber strap and a 42mm diameter, the new Aquanaut reference 5168G-010 features a white gold case and $35,000 price tag. Despite the price, it’s a fun offering that lacks the formality that some of the brand’s exquisite haute horology can inevitably exhibit.

Who It’s For: The Patek Philippe Aquanaut might not have been fathered by Gerald Genta like its popular brother the Nautilus, but with the same Patek parentage, there is a clear resemblance. That brand recognition will be important for prospective buyers since, otherwise, its precious metal case material can be mistaken for steel and its youthful styling is unassuming. There’s a good chance one wants people (but only the right people) to notice when spending money on a bold-wearing watch like this.

Key Features: Aside from this particular hue which the brand is calling “khaki green,” the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5168G is exactly the same as the blue version that came before it. A good deal of the value and attraction for Patek watches comes from the brand’s exquisite in-house movements, one of which is present here — the automatic 324 S C, which features 45 hours of power reserve and is visible through a display case back. At 42mm wide, this may be the Aquanaut’s “Jumbo” version, but the watch is nice and thin at only 8.25mm thick and is sport-ready with a water-resistance of 120m. The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5168G in khaki green will be available later in 2019 for a price of $35,000.
