Today in Gear: Dress Shoes With Shock-Absorbing Foam, Herman Miller’s Collab With Logitech & More

Today in Gear is our daily roundup of all the latest product announcements, drops and deals. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

No matter what work you’re in, you are probably always on the move. Unfortunately, dress shoes have been slow to keep up with the fast pace of modern life — with clunky hard to break-in leather and heavy soles that give little grip and make your dogs bark. The Holden Plain Toe from Johnston & Murphy merges classic style with ultralight, cushioned comfort. Crafted from premium subtle leather that will move with you, The Holden also features memory foam cushioning, which molds to the contours of your foot to ensure a comfortable fit all day — day after day. The outsole is also a break from the rigid tradition, made from shock-absorbing EVA that will keep your feet feeling good no matter how long you are on your feet.

Gillette Fusion 5 Razor Blad Refills
Save 30%: Now at Amazon, you can save 30 percent on some annoyingly expensive Gillette Fusion5 razor blade refills. This is a great chance to stock up if you shave regularly with a Fusion5 ProGlide razor. Each cartridge features five of Gillette’s thinnest blades (for a more comfortable shave) and a precision trimmer to help groom hard-to-reach areas. Normally $48 for 12 cartridges, the package costs just $34 today. — John Zientek

Roomba i7+ Robo-Vacuum
Save $100: When we reviewed iRobot’s i7+ robo-vacuum, we called it the best robo-vacuum you could buy. But we did so with one caveat: price. The full setup — which includes the vacuum and its charging and trash-dumping base — starts at $1,099. Today on Amazon, the cost is slightly more wallet-friendly.

Marked down $100, the i7+ is the first robo-vac to empty its dust contents for you. Once it senses its dustbin is full, it locks itself into its home base and deposits the trash inside (the base can hold around 30 Roombas worth of trash). It also retains “mission” data every time you send it out to clean, and it uses that data to more quickly clean your home on future missions. It’s all controlled through iRobot’s smartphone app. — Will Price

In partnership with Cousteau, Seiko will dedicate a portion of the proceeds from sales of the SRPC91 to Cousteau’s Ocean Learning Center, dedicated to promoting ocean health and conservation.

Nike Epic React Flyknit 2
Save $50: When Nike announced React foam in 2017, it promised the impossible: foam that’s lightweight, durable, and provides ample cushioning and bouncy energy return. Nike’s materials scientists tested more than 400 chemical combinations until they found the perfect mix, which the first delivered in basketball footwear. But React found its stride after Nike injected it into the Epic React Flyknit, a running shoe that gained a considerable following throughout 2018.

It wasn’t surprising that the Epic React Flyknit 2, released earlier this year, would also be a success. It features the foam that’s embedded in its name as well as Nike’s sock-like knitted upper, Flyknit. But for the follow-up, Nike tweaked that part of the shoe’s construction: the upper is stretchier, more supportive, and comfier with a lower heel cuff. Right now, the shoe is $50 off on Nike’s website. — Tanner Bowden

Apple Watch Series 4
Save up to $100: Apple officially announced the Apple Watch Series 5 last week and, in doing so, also stopped selling the Series 4, presumably because it’s slightly too similar to the new flagship offering, with the exceptions the Series 5 has an always-on display and a new sensor (a magnetometer) that allows it to work as a compass, showing you which way you’re facing while using Apple Maps. The Series 5 also comes in titanium models, although those are significantly more expensive. That said, it’s a great time to shop for the Apple Watch Series 4 because it’s on sal. It also has a bunch of the newer features that the Series 3 lacks, including fall detection, a built-in EKG and a variety of fitness features. If you shop on Amazon right now, you can buy a Series 4 with cellular for as little as $399, which is $100 off. If you don’t need built-in LTE, which I’d argue that most people don’t need (nor do they want to pay the extra $10 each month on their phone bill), you can get a pretty good deal on GPS-only models of the Series 4, too. — Tucker Bowe |

Fluance Turntables
Save Up to 16%: Fluance is a Canadian audio company that makes some of the best entry-level turntables and bookshelf speakers you can buy. And right now through September 16, you can get a great deal on its entry-level turntables if you shop on Amazon. The Fluance RT81 ($250 $210), which is most review publications’ pick for “best entry-level turntable,” and the Fluance RT80 ($200 $170) are both on sale. The main difference between the two is that the RT81 has a solid wood plinth, as opposed to the RT80’s hollow one, so it’s better at preventing vibrations. The two turntables have a built-in preamp that you can turn on or off, enabling you to buy upgraded external pre-amp further down the road if you so decide.

Additionally, the Fluance Ai40 ($250 $210) powered bookshelf speakers are also on sale, but only in black. — Tucker Bowe

Global G-2 Chef’s Knife
Save $65: The Global kitchen knives are made of Yoshikin’s (its parent company) proprietary Cromova 18 steel, a semi-mysterious mixture of chromium, molybdenum and vanadium, and is semi-analogous to VG-10 stainless steel, a popular steel for both Japanese and western-style kitchen knives. The key difference being, due to higher (though undefined exact percentage) chromium levels, it’s significantly hardier than VG-10, and most stainless knife steel in general. This means it’s unlikely to chip, is supremely corrosion resistant and doesn’t stain under any circumstances. Naturally, you do lose just slightly in the edge-holding department, and it’s not as easy to sharpen as softer steels (this is the balance of hardness and toughness versus cutting utility).

On all Global knives, as noted above, the handle is an extension of the blade. This is incredibly useful for an everyday kitchen knife, as there are no nooks or crannies for food particles or moisture to hide in and ruin the knife. The lack of bulky handle also allows the knife to be incredibly lightweight, but still well-balanced (to achieve this, the handle is hollow and filled with sand).

Today on Amazon, Global’s G-2 Chef’s Knife is on sale for $95, matching the lowest price on record on the platform. — Will Price

Patagonia Stretch Rainshadow Jacket
Save 25%: Umbrellas are easy to hate. For caving in at the first threatening gust of wind, for holding their spikey arms at eye level, for taking up more than their share of sidewalk space. Rain jackets, on the other hand, do the same job of warding off precipitation without such a fuss. What’s more, their hands-free method of keeping dry makes them better for things like hiking, riding bikes and working outdoors. One of our favorites for all of these things, Patagonia’s Stretch Rainshadow Jacket, is currently 25 percent off at Backcountry.

The two and a half layer rain jacket is more breathable than other similar coats, which helps in these early days of fall when the temperature hasn’t fully dropped. Plus, when it does get hot, there are two underarm vents to help shed heat. The Rainshadow is also great because, as its full name implies, its nylon material is stretchy instead of stiff, which makes it great for activity (we even take it backcountry skiing). And on top of that, it’s exceptionally light, so you can shove it into your bag without a thought, even if the chance of rain is only 10 percent. — Tanner Bowden

This Iconic Motorcycle Jacket Is a Steal Right Now
Save 43%: Belstaff has been producing legendary motorsport apparel for nearly 100 years. Born from motorcyclists’ universal need for sturdy all-weather gear, Belstaff made a name for itself with its waxed-cotton-and-leather equipment. Developed for racers and adventurers, these jackets largely lived on the fringes until they were carried into the mainstream on the back of actor/racer/badass Steve McQueen. And if, like McQueen, you have your eye on a Belstaff, now is the time to pick one up at RevZilla.

The Belstaff Brooklands Jacket is an eight-ounce waxed cotton classic buzzing and ready for two-wheeled adventure. The Brooklands is made with removable armor in the shoulders and elbows, as well as a sleeve in the back to insert further protection. The Brooklands jacket was made with its namesake race track in mind, with an added padded layer for extra safety. The jacket is not only made for a tightly-tucked cafe racer, it’s such a stylish design, it can be worn right off the track and straight to dinner.

Catalinbread Belle Epoch Guitar Echo Pedal
Save $32: Now at Guitar Center, you can save $32 on one of the best echo pedals for guitar. The Catalinbread Belle Epoch Tape Echo was inspired by the iconic Maestro Echoplex EP-3 tape delay and packs all its nuanced features into a small, easy-to-use package.

“The Catalinbread Belle Epoch is the closest thing to a real EP-3 that I’ve ever played,” said legendary guitarist Eric Johnson in a statement. The Belle Epoch features a Mix knob to control volume, a Rec Lev knob to control how hard the delay is hit, a Mod knob to control the amount of random tape flutter, an Echo Sustain knob to control the number of repeats and an Echo Delay knob to control delay time.

Normally $210, the Belle Epoch is now $178 at Guitar Center. If you’ve been searching for a great echo pedal to add to your rig, don’t pass this one up.

Oakley Airbrake XL Prizm Goggles
Save up to $108: If Abraham Maslow worked at a ski shop, he’d tell you that after your skis, snowboard, and boots, goggles are the most important piece of mountain equipment you can own. Goggles are annoying to buy though. A good pair will often cost well over $100, while an affordable $30 lens will fog up before you make it out of the lift line and fall apart before your trip is over. But being able to see the snow beneath your feet is of the utmost importance, so our advice here is straightforward: spend more money on a decent pair of goggles.

The good news is that if you do your shopping ahead of time — as in, now — you might find a great deal on goggles from last season. We dug one up for you: Oakley’s Airbrake XL, which features the company’s contrast-boosting Prizm lens tech. New, they’ll run you $240. But with a discount at Backcountry, you can pick up a pair for more than $100 off that price. The catch? Only a handful of colors are available with the deepest discount, but others are marked down nearly as much. — Tanner Bowden

Marathon Military Watches
Save 25%: Marathon is a Canadian company making some badass military watches, many of which have seen action with Canadian, U.S. and other armed forces over the years. Right now three of their watches are on sale on Huckberry, including the Medium Divers Quartz (TSAR) in 36mm; the General Purpose Quartz in 39mm; and the Search and Rescue Medium Diver’s Automatic (GSAR) in 36mm. If you’re looking for a medium-sized dive watch, both the quartz and automatic models are serious tools and highly comfortable, and if a simple field watch will do the trick, the General Purpose Quartz is all you need. — Oren Hartov

A Giant Sale on Some of the Best Cool Motorcycle Helmets
Save Up to 53%: If you’re reading this, odds are good you know we here at Gear Patrol are always looking out for you motorcycle riders out there — and your heads in particular. Well, so are the fine folks at Revzilla by offering a bunch of great helmets at low prices in their closeout sale. With deals on some of the coolest-looking helmets from great brands like Schuberth, Bell and Arai, this is a sale you won’t want to miss. — Peter Corn

Eddie Bauer Summer Sale
Save 50%: In 2017, Eddie Bauer released its EverTherm Down Jacket and changed our perception of what down can look like. Rather than a horde of tiny feathers stuffed into horizontal baffles, EverTherm’s insulation is arranged in fabric-like sheets called Thindown. The construction prevents the need for that quilted look but also eliminates cold spots created by stitching, producing more warmth for less weight.

The EverTherm’s innovation was undeniable on paper, and when we put the jacket to the test, we found that it wasn’t all marketing jargon. The coat is impressive, and it’s certainly worthy of use in the mountains and around town, too, considering the lack of baffles makes it look less technical than most down jackets, which could be a boon to city-dwellers. For these reasons, we named it one of the best of the year and included it in our guide to the Best Down Jackets.

The EverTherm is only in its third season, but with Eddie Bauer’s current sale you can snag it for 50 percent off. If you need a down jacket for the inevitable cold of fall and winter, the EverTherm is a great option to consider.

BioLite Emergency Prep Kits
Save up to $75: Emergency preparedness is no joke, but taking it seriously doesn’t mean you need to dig a concrete bunker in your backyard. Beyond a plan of action, it’s smart to have a few essential items stashed away in a known place. BioLite is removing the guesswork from creating that gear list with its new Prep Kits, which cover light, power and drinking water for different living situations (there’s a solo kit, an apartment kit, and a family home kit).

The Prep Kits are essentially BioLite product bundles that bring together its HeadLamp, SunLight, and SolarHome with LifeStraw’s portable water filtration systems. In doing that, the company is cutting the total cost of these individual products by 15 percent, which levels out the family kit by $75. All together, these items are still small, highly stashable and efficiently provide survival basics should the power and water go out. — Tanner Bowden

Krups Coffee Grinder & Scale
Save 25%: You have to have a grinder to drink fresh coffee and you need a scale to make consistently fresh pots. Together, both devices typically cost anywhere from $150 to $200 (or more). Today on Amazon, cop both in one machine for barely $100.

Usually around $130, the Krups coffee grinder with scale is discounted to $105 today. Now all you need is better coffee. — Will Price

L.L.Bean Labor Day Sale
Save up to 76%: Since its founding in 1912 by Maine woodsman Leon Leonwood Bean, L.L.Bean has produced a number of products that have become so recognizable that they transcend the brand name. Most of these things are rooted in utility. Its first item, the Maine Hunting Shoe, became somewhat of a draft for the universal Bean Boot and its omnipresent canvas tote bags originally hauled ice and wood. That function-first ethos still exists in the newer things, like school backpacks and synthetic jackets, that the company produces today.

All of these things, and many, many more, are currently on sale through Labor Day for 70 percent off plus another 20 percent off after that with the discount code GREAT20. That math comes out to potential savings of 76 percent. Below are some of the things that we’re pulling out our wallets for. — Tanner Bowden

A Giant Labor Day Sale on Motorcycle Gear
Save Up to 60%: It’s that time, y’all: Summer is winding down, and the leaves will be falling soon enough. As such, RevZilla has seen fit to to let some prices fall with them. Although there’s an obvious downside to colder weather for motorcycle riders, there’s also an upside: gear, gear, gear. It’s the best time of year for riders who love gear. You can shop for jackets without sweating in the store. Boot shopping no longer requires the removal of sandals and a barefoot fit test. Autumn, it’s safe to say, is the best time for anyone who rides and wants to look good doing it.

There’re too many deals in this sale to post them all here, so we’ve gone through the list and picked a few of our favorites. But act fast: Some of these deals end as soon as Labor Day. — Peter Corn

Polk Audio Command Bar
Save $100: Polk Audio’s Command Bar is one of the best entry-level soundbars available, and it’s on sale right now. The normally $300 soundbar (which comes with a wireless subwoofer) is $100 off if you shop at either Best Buy or Amazon. Part of its allure, other than improving your TV’s sound, is that Command Bar has built-in Amazon Alexa — similar to the Sonos Beam. This means you can use your voice to do things like raise or lower the TV volume, play music from Spotify or Pandora or control the smart home devices in the rest of your house, should you have any.

Today in Gear: Snap Up These Better Fitting Dress Shirts, Gorgeous New Motorcycle Helmets & More

Today in Gear is our daily roundup of all the latest product announcements, drops and deals. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

Enro has been making top of the line dress shirts for 100 years. But, you’d be forgiven if you hadn’t run across the shirts yourself, because until recently you could only find these gems in men’s specialty stores. Now, Enro’s perfectly fitted shirts are available online through its own website. With serious quality construction, forever flat seams that will never pucker and high fiber count fabrics, Enro ensures a made-to-measure fit without the measuring. The new Dynamic Fit uses 14 points of measurement reference — for comparison, the industry standard is eight points of measurement — which means it is shaped better and as close to custom as you can get off the rack. You also don’t have to worry about heating up the iron, as all Enro shirts are made with its second-generation non-iron technology that will keep your shirt crisp right out of the washing machine. With plenty of patterns and fabrics to choose from, you will be sure to find a shirt or two that fits your style. Right now you can snap up two Enro shirts for 25 percent off, three for 30 percent and four for 35 percent — so why not fill the closet.

Naglev Unico Hiking Shoe
Save $57: A pair of handmade hiking boots can cost as much as $750, but right now there’s a pair made by a small Italian brand called Naglev available for $173, which is 25 percent off its regular price of $230. Before you discount that as small change, know that the shoe, called the Unico Hiker, is unlike any other hiking shoe available (it’s also on our list of the best hiking boots available).

Naglev is based in the Alps, where outdoor footwear was invented, and it created the Unico to function as a middle ground between a hiking boot and a trail running sneaker. It calls to mind approach shoes (sturdy, low-cut hiking shoes typically used by rock climbers who face long treks through technical terrain on the way to a climb), but it’s built much differently. The upper is made of one single piece of Kevlar fabric — yes, the same stuff used to make body armor — and its inside is lined with a sock-like wool liner. This construction creates a remarkably durable shoe that’s unexpectedly comfortable, and entirely unique. — Tanner Bowden

Adirondack Chairs
Save 54%: On July 18, 1905, summer porch-sitting royalty was born. Officially invented by one Harry Bunnell, the Adirondack chair was described at the time as “a new and useful Improvement in Chairs” in its patent. The improvement was Bunnell’s want to be relaxed as hell.

The chair was designed to require the sitter to lean back, kick their feet up and made it intentionally challenging to remove themselves from the seat. More than 100 years later, Bunnell’s chair still kicks ass. Today on Sierra Trading Post, get Aspen Brand’s collapsible take on it for 54 percent off the sticker price. — Will Price

Bell Race Star Helmets
Save Up to 50%: Bell’s Race Star helmet is a dynamite motorcycle lid for anyone who plans on hitting the track or back roads with verve. (Or at least wants other riders to think they’re hitting the pavement with verve.) Made with a carbon fiber 3K Carbon Shell to minimize weight, the Race Star doesn’t sacrifice offers protection at the altar of lightness; it meets or goes beyond Snell M2015 and DOT certifications, and packs a three-layer Flex Impact Liner to deal with crashes at any speeds. It’s been tested in wind tunnels to make sure the air flows over it with minimal fuss, while the Panovision viewport offers better visibility in all directions compared with Bell helmets past. And, of course, it just looks sweet.

Right now, thanks to a closeout deal over at Revzilla, you can pick up several variants of the Bell Race Star for massive savings — as much as 50 percent off on certain models. But there is, however, a catch: These sales are only available on small and extra-small helmets. Cheap Patio Furniture
Save Up to 50%: Now that summer is upon us, back porches and patios are at a premium. Anyone whose residence possesses either is instantly a meeting ground for friends and family. Thus, if you have one but don’t have the seating to accommodate, you’re SOL. And that’s exactly what this very summer Ebay sale for. In it, you’ll find a multitude of already-cheap outdoor furniture discounted from 20 to 50 percent. And, as with all Ebay sales, there’s a lot to sift through (some $58 Adirondack chairs are a good place to start). If you’re in need of seating, tables, hammocks and fire pits on the cheap, you could do much worse. — Will Price grey_placeholder

Fender Guitars
Save up to 30%: Now through July 4th, you can save up to 30 percent on a bunch of Fender guitars at Guitar Center. For the 4th of July Sale, the retailer discounted some iconic guitars including Stratocasters, Telecasters, Jaguars and more. If you’ve been waiting to pick up an affordable axe with player-focused features, this is your chance.

Save $100 on a black Special Edition Standard Strat. The alder-body guitar has a Modern ‘C’ neck profile, a maple fretboard, a Fender Synchronized Tremolo and aged-white knobs. Or if you’re a Tele lover, pick up a Special Edition Standard Tele loaded with a pair of humbucking pickups for $100 off. For fans of offset guitars, a Special Edition Standard Jaguar is also on sale; The instrument comes in a Surf Pearl finish (an homage to the Jaguar’s early days) and has an alder body, a 22-fret maple neck and a Pau Ferro fingerboard. — John Zientek

Everything You Need for More Comfortable Camping Is on Sale Right Now
Save up to 40%: If you camp close to your car more often than miles up a trail, you can bring bigger and more comfortable gear. This stuff emphasizes comfort, from a tent that you can stand in to a portable fire pit. — Tanner Bowden grey_placeholder

Sonos Playbar
Save $150: Sonos is selling refurbished models of its Playbar, the company’s biggest and best-sounding soundbar, for $150 off. The normally $699 soundbar can be bought for $549 right now on Sonos’s website. — Tucker Bowe grey_placeholder

Red Wing Pecos Boots
Save 44%: Red Wing made a name for itself building work boots for farmers and factory employees in the Upper Midwest, but the company also had an office in Dallas that opened in the early 1920s. To serve the Texas market — where men preferred pull-on riding boots — Red Wing developed its own version of this style in the ’30s. By the ’50s, it had refined the style and given it the name of a small Texas town: Pecos. And while the boots were developed in the rugged West, they quickly became a favorite across the country due to their simple silhouette, comfortable fit and field-tested durability.

Now at Nordstrom Rack, you can save 44 percent on a pair of iconic Red Wing Pecos boots. The pull-on style is modeled on a roper boot with a shorter heel, designed to handle a day of walking. Available in both Sand and Olive rough-out leather, the hard-wearing style will serve you for years to come — and now it costs as little as $180. — John Zientek

Case Knives Mini Trapper Pocket Knife
Save 36%: It might be hard to imagine that a small, simple pocket knife like Case’s Mini Trapper could be collectible — especially when you can find other similar blades adorned with gems and bone — but it’s true. That’s thanks to Case Knives’s century-plus long history of crafting in the United States, as well as its orderly system of stamping each of its knives with a logo accompanied by small dots and Xs that denote the year in which it was produced. It’s a subtle detail that adds an element of time to a favorite blade and, for those with a mind to collect, a way to tell the difference between two knives born decades apart.

Just starting your Case Knives collection? The Mini Trapper, a model that’s characterized by two blades that are both under three inches in length, one a clip point and the other a spey point, is on sale at Huckberry with a synthetic yellow handle for 36 percent off, which brings it down to just $32. — Tanner Bowden

UE Wonderboom 2
Save $20: Ultimate Ears released the Wonderboom 2, its smallest portable Bluetooth speaker, just a few weeks ago — and it’s already on sale. Normally $100, you can snag one from Best Buy or Amazon in a variety of different colors for just $80. It’s a pretty good deal considering the fact that some publications, such as 9to5Toys, have called the Wonderboom 2 “this summer’s best Bluetooth speaker.” — Tucker Bowe | grey_placeholder

The watch generally retails for only $138, but right now, you can nab it for just $99. — Oren Hartov grey_placeholder

Seiko SNN241 Chronograph Watch
Save 54%: Get the Seiko SNN241 chronograph for just $99. Featuring a 42.6mm steel case with Japanese quartz movement and 100m of water resistance, it’s a great everyday wearer for the summer — just don’t try to to take it diving. — Oren Hartov

Insane Sale on Motorcycle Helmets Is Still Going On
Save Up to 50%: The gear you wear when you ride can literally save your skin, so it’s worth investing a little extra to make sure you’re protected as well as possible. Patagonia Nine Trails Backpack
Save 55%: While some hiking backpacks cram as many functions into as few liters as possible, others opt for the opposite tack: achieve utility through minimalism. This was precisely what Patagonia strove for in its Nine Trails packs, which launched last spring, and the company (as usual) landed its mark.

Instead of multiple compartments and various access points, the Nine Trails backpack has one spacious main compartment that’s accessed through a large U-shaped zipper. On the exterior are multiple stretchy sleeve-style pockets for storing items that need to be accessed routinely on the trail, like extra layers, water bottles and snacks. That’s essentially it, and the backpack is a success because of that simplicity (it’s one of our favorite daypacks for hiking). The bag isn’t without a couple of extras though — there are small zippered stash pockets inside, on the top and on the hipbelt, and a hydration sleeve with a port for the hose.

Compared to other hiking bags in Patagonia’s line, the Nine Trails is still new, but as long as you don’t mind last season’s colors — Classic Red and Sprouted Green — you can find the bag on sale for up to 55 percent off at Backcountry in both 20- and 28-liter capacities. — Tanner Bowden

Today in Gear: Oris’s New Pilot’s Watch, Snow Peak’s Exclusive Retro Apparel Drop and More

We’ve made some new adjustments to Today in Gear, including a new publishing time of 4 p.m. in order to capture all the day’s new stories. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

Oris Big Crown Pointer
In 1938, Oris first developed its pointer date and put it into a pilot’s watch. The complication indicated the day of the month, with a hand pointed to the day at the edge of the dial and offered up additional functionality to the wearer back when dates were not as ubiquitous on watches as they are today. The configuration has been an Oris favorite since and continues on in the brand’s latest aviation-inspired watch 80 years later.
The new Big Crown Pointer Date does not stray far from that original formula. It features brilliant ’30s-inspired design details like “cathedral” hands, a coin-edge bezel and sharp, printed Arabic numerals done in a legible, old-school font. The watch is still designed with modern tastes in mind, though, and as such comes in a great, mid-size 40mm case with a tastefully stylish light blue dial. Inside ticks away an Oris-tuned Sellita SW 200-1, an affordable and reliable automatic. As such, the Big Crown Pointer Date is still an exceptionally-priced watch, retailing for just $1,600.

Today, you can get the Apex Flex GTX Hooded Jacket by The North Face for $161, when it usually retails for $229.

A three-layer GoreTex liner makes the Apex Flex GTX both wind and waterproof while venting under the arms works to regulate the temperature inside the jacket. More so, the fit of the jacket makes it possible to use as a base or mid-layer on chillier days. It’s most definitely a three season item, but if you plan on heading anywhere with serious altitude or a chance of a temperature drop a good soft shell like the Apex Flex GTX Hooded Jacket by The North Face is essential.

The North Face Bags
Save 30%: If you’re in need of a new bag for your summer travels, Nordstrom currently has some great markdowns on options from The North Face. You can save 30 percent on a range of bags and luggage including backpacks, duffels and wheeled luggage. No matter your destination, there’s a bag that will fulfill your needs, and among the current options, prices start at just $69. — John Zientek

Taschen Coffee Table Books
Save up to 75%: Your home is more than a living space; that term would imply that the sole purpose of everything inside it is to aid in the functions of daily survival. The truth is that your apartment or house is filled with a consciously- and unconsciously-collected group of objects that together act as a representation of who you are. (And if it truly is empty, well that says a lot, too.)

As a focal point of one of the more social rooms in any space — the living room — the coffee table provides an opportunity to curate how visitors might understand you. Yes, it’s a surface for remote controls and drinking vessels, but it can also accommodate larger objects, like books. There’s even a term for this: the coffee table book.

These publications are extensive and usually filled with as many pictures as words. Every subject is fair game too — the art lover might display a tome on Matisse’s work with paper cut-outs, while a vagabond would favor photographer Steve McCurry’s photographic work in Afghanistan. These two books and many more are currently featured in Taschen’s sale on display and slightly-damaged models. Discounts range from 25-75 percent off, and given that these big books can cost as much as $700, it’s a sale worth checking out. — Tanner Bowden

Mountain Steals Tent Sale
Save 46%: While Memorial Day Weekend is often symbolic of the beginning of Summer Fridays (if you’re lucky enough to get them), today is the summer solstice. It’s also the longest day of the year and the official start of summer. The weather is currently cooperating, and bringing with it nights that are often pleasant, temperature-wise. If sleeping outdoors is your jam, you know the time to do so is now. And while there are many ways to do so in your backyard — hammock, tree house, etc. — this sale on tents is the best way to do it everywhere. Save up to 46 percent on tents from Sierra Designs, The North Face, Eureka, Big Agnes, Nemo and more. Pick one up that is light, portable and spacious, as well as minimalist in nature. Here are a few to get you started. — Meg Lappe

Today in Gear: A Fantastic Portable Fire Pit, Mazda’s Muscled-Up Miata, Gourmet Camp Coffee and More

We’ve made some new adjustments to Today in Gear, including a new publishing time of 4 p.m. in order to capture all the day’s new stories. Comments or concerns? We’d love to hear from you at tig@gearpatrol.com.

Campfire Defender Pop-Up Pit
Growing up, I always wanted a fire pit. I suggested it to my parents on numerous occasions, as I did with a pool and a trampoline, but they always vetoed it. Why? Not because it’s a safety issue. We were all Boy Scouts, my father included, after all. No, they didn’t want a fire pit because it would be a blight on their yard — they claimed it would be ugly! Also, it would get in the way of all our backyard soccer games and frisbee catches. It would be a magnet for stubbed and bruised ankles, they claimed.

Looking back, my parents might have been right. Maybe. But what if we got a portable fire pit instead? One that could be used and enjoyed, to roast marshmallows and tell ghost stories over, and then packed up and stored in the garage — that’d be a game changer, right?

Enter the Campfire Defender Pop-Up Pit ($90) by Fireside Outdoor. It collapses and folds up very similar to camping chair, and then it sets up just as easily. It’s lightweight (less than 8 pounds), so carrying from prime spot to prime spot won’t be a chore. And it’s made of a proprietary stainless steel alloy so it can withstand being heated and then rapidly cooled over and over again. Lastly, because the design of it allows for more airflow. the fire actually burns brighter with less smoke than a traditional on-ground fireplace.

The Campfire Defender Pop-Up Pit is available now for $90, but you can get an extra 15-percent of your order by entering the code USA15 at checkout.

Danner Mountain Light Hiking Boots
Save $114: Ask I child to draw a picture of a someone wearing hiking boots. She’ll likely illustrate footwear that’s somewhat clunky with some heavy tread, and if you give her colored pencils, chances are that boot will be brown. Task an adult with the same assignment and the result may be a more skillful reproduction (depending on the adult) but the image will essentially be the same — a brown leather boot, heavy tread; it’s the icon image that’s come to stand for the entire hiking boot category.

It also happens to be a very close representation of Danner’s most iconic hiking boot, the Mountain Light. That boot is a contemporary iteration of Danner’s very first hiking boot, the 6490, which was released in 1973 and quickly gained acclaim from numerous outdoor publications at the time. The boot was durable, comfortable and lighter than any other rugged hiking footwear at the time.

The Mountain Light continues the legacy of the 6490. It’s built with an upper made from a single piece of full-grain leather and hefty Vibram Kletterlift rubber outsole. The construction provides ample stability and support, and after the requisite break-in period, the Mountain Light’s leather conforms to the foot for a close fit akin to which only a custom bootmaker can provide. Treat them well, and they’ll likely last long enough to pass on to the next generation.

Right now, Danner’s Mountain Light hiking boots are on sale at Backcountry for 30 percent off, with plenty of sizes and colors in stock. It might be the cheapest way to pick up a pair (other than searching for the ones that Reese Witherspoon threw off of a cliff in Oregon’s Willamette Forest during the filming of Wild).

Note: Danner recommends buying a half-size down from what you typically wear for the best fit. — Tanner Bowden

Sony NW-A45 Walkman
Save $42: You can still buy a Sony Walkman these days, it’s true, but they aren’t the Walkmans of yesteryear that play cassette tapes. Instead, Sony’s current crop of Walkmans are portable high-res audio players that look similar to an iPad Touch. The NW-A45 Walkman is one of the company’s newer models — released in 2017 — and it’s also one of the most budget-friendly you can find. It has a built-in amplifier and is able to play 24-bit audio at 96kHz, which is significantly higher-resolution than what you’d get from a CD player. And it has 16GB of storage with a microSD slot in case you need more. For musicians, audiophiles on a budget, and or anybody who wants to take the first steps into hi-fi, this device is a pretty good upgrade from your smartphone.
