8. Chevy Beast

Custom 1968 Mercury Cougar

Some collectors insist on a factory original, un-restored car so they can admire the patina it gathered over the decades and enjoy their car ‘as is’, while others have their pride and job go through a painstakingly expensive restoration to make their classic car look exactly how it left the factory doors over half a century ago … and then you get to the Restomod crowd.

Restomods are intended for a special breed of car owners, people that love their classic cars, but don’t want to forfeit on modern commodities like big horsepower and a big disc brake setup … and Ringbrothers, the world-renowned custom car builders and parts manufacturer, caters to those exact customers with their latest latest creation.

Their new 1968 Mercury Cougar was first taken through a full ‘frame-off’ restoration, where she received a completely new floor pan and transmission tunnel. The car itself had to be in perfect shape for what Ringbrothers had in mind … installing a massive Ford Coyote 5.0-Liter, V8 engine delivering 460 hp coupled to a Ford F-150 Raptor sourced, 10-speed automatic transmission, complete with paddle-shifters.

To keep all this extra power safe, Ringbrothers added a DSE suspension, performance brakes and a stunning set of HRE Series C1 C103 Forged 3-Piece wheels wearing top of the line Michelin tires, the thunder is brought to the outside world through a a custom Flowmaster exhaust.

“We put our heart into each car we build, and this Cougar is no exception,” said Ringbrothers co-owner Jim Ring. “The finished product is mild and classy, yet any enthusiast instantly knows it’s not stock. I imagine this is what Mercury designers would have come up with if they were building the Cougar today.”

A classic 1968 Mercury Cougar usually needs new or redone bright-work, Ringbrothers installed a new bumper, new grille (remember these flip up to unveil the headlights, and this mechanism usually needs a lot of work during restoration) … and to really make that dark green BASF paint come out perfectly, all badges are new too.

This was the first time Ringbrothers took on the project of a Cougar, and while they would have loved to showcase their work at the SEMA Show, this unfortunately couldn’t happen at this point in time, but Mike Ring, co-owner of Ringbrothers, hopes they can have their latest masterpiece on display to the public soon.

Liberty Walk Previews SEMA 2019 Creation: Widebody Lamborghini Huracan

SEMA 2019 is just around the corner. It is the biggest annual tuning event. It takes place in Las Vegas every year, showcasing some a wide range of tasteful, and tasteless, aftermarket modifications.

As far as the performance market goes, one of the biggest international names, Liberty Walk, has announced that it will show a widebody Lamborghini Huracan.

Liberty Walk already produces one of the most popular Lamborghini Huracan body kits. This latest version builds on what is already available and adds parts inspired by the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ!

It’s clear that the Liberty Walk program isn’t for those that want the ability to easily reverse the modifications. Extensive modifications have been made, adding width, a massive rear wing and a carbon fibre front hood.

The wheel arches include a front-wheel arch vent and fender gills a new side skirt leads to large air intakes which feed the rear-mounted engine. At the front, a new bumper includes a redesigned front splitter. It blends into the new front hood.

The rear gets a new engine cover which supports the rear spoiler. The massive carbon fibre unit imitates the SVJ with the centreboard. The rear bumper is entirely new with a large rear diffuser and aerodynamic rear wheel outlets.

The ride height has been slammed to the ground for maximum effect, suffice to say you would not get far on most modern roads!

Ford GT Carbon Series is the lightest version of Ford’s supercar

Following up on the announcement that it will build 350 more GTs, Ford revealed another version of its supercar that will be available to customers. It’s the 2019 Ford GT Carbon Series, and it’s the lightest version of this GT model.

Visually, it’s recognizable by its gray paint and the standard exposed carbon fiber stripe down the middle, which showcases the perfectly reflected carbon weave on either side of the car. This stripe can be accentuated with a contrasting color stripe down the middle, along with mirror caps the same color. The accent color choices are restricted to silver, orange, red and blue. Inside, upholstered parts get unique silver stitching, and matte carbon fiber is used for the air vent pods, side sills and center console.

While the visual upgrades are nice, the real appeal of the Carbon Series is that it’s the lightest current GT. Total weight loss is 39 pounds. This is because it includes as standard the optional carbon fiber wheels, titanium exhaust and titanium lug nuts. It also gets a unique rear hatch with lighter glass and additional ventilation. We suspect that Ford could have shaved off a few more pounds if it removed the climate control and radio, but Ford said that GT buyers didn’t want to sacrifice those features.

Superformance ‘Future GT Forty’ with turbocharged V6 coming to SEMA Show

Superformance has made plenty of GT40 replicas in the past, and it’s bringing a new one to this year’s SEMA Show that uses a modified version of the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 out of the current Ford GT. No, the car isn’t built off the new GT’s chassis, but it ends up looking a bit like the GT from 2005 with a dash of the newest version in front. What makes these Superformance cars special is that they’re built on chassis designed to replicate the original GT40 as close as possible. About two-thirds of the steel chassis parts are completely interchangeable with the original car from the 1960s.

This one happens to have a weird name, Future GT Forty, but the folks over at Superformance appear to have created what looks like an awesome car to drive on paper. The twin-turbo V6 gets Garrett turbos and a fuel system by Aeromotive. A custom exhaust from Magnaflow plays the note out the back, while all engine installation work is handled by V’s Performance. You’ll get a Quaife five-speed manual transmission for this beast too — guaranteed to be more engaging than the seven-speed dual-clutch in the current GT. Ridetech Shockwave provided an air suspension, and HRE wheels get wrapped in sticky Michelin rubber. It’s been painted and stickered by Superformance and Hillbank Motorsports to complete the appearance’s effect.

Unfortunately, Superformance doesn’t provide any power or acceleration figures for the car. We’ll be driving the Future GT Forty after the 2018 SEMA Show to see what Superformance is capable of making, so look out for our first drive review. In the meantime, you’ll be able to check it out at the show in the Magnaflow booth come Oct 30.

301 mph, 1,600 hp: Hennessey Venom F5 details emerge

Hennessy Special Vehicles is unveiling its much-awaited Venom F5 hypercar today at the SEMA Show (along with a cool new video that fans of early Aerosmith will dig, below), and the beast dubbed “America’s Hypercar” is making big promises. Hennessey teased the stunner a couple weeks ago, saying its intent was to take on the Bugatti Chiron for the title of world’s fastest car.

Now we have more details to go on for the F5. Its twin-turbo, 7.4-liter aluminum V8 produces an astounding 1,600 horsepower and 1,300 pound-feet of torque, giving it a top speed of 301 miles per hour. Acceleration will be quick: from 0 to 186 mph in less than 10 seconds and 0 to 249 and back to rest in less than 30 seconds, though independent performance tests of course will have to bear out those claims. The engine is mated to a seven-speed single-clutch paddle-shift transmission that drives the rear wheels. Unlike the car it replaces, the Venom GT, which was built atop a Lotus Elise platform, the Venom F5 gets an all-new, lightweight chassis and carbon-fiber body, giving it a curb weight of just 2,950 pounds.

“We’ve designed F5 to be timeless so that in 25 years it will still have a level of performance and design that will be unmatched,” CEO John Hennessey said in a statement. “The F5 is an all new car, designed and built from the ground up, from the engine to the chassis. We expect the Venom F5, named for the most powerful tornado speed winds on the Fujita scale, to be the first road car capable of achieving more than 300 mph and have worked closely with Pennzoil to get us across the finish line.”

The Venom GT, which had a 1,451-horsepower twin-turbo 7.0-liter V8, was unofficially dubbed the world’s fastest car in 2014, having hit 270.49 mph, though Bugatti plans to challenge that next year in the Chiron.

Base price will be a cool $1.6 million, with just 24 units to be built. And according to “Top Gear,” John Hennessey himself will hand-pick its recipients, with first deliveries starting in 2019.

Gemballa GT Concept is an 828-hp widebody Porsche 911 for SEMA

SEMA is an interesting show, where mad scientists and engineers take cars and trucks and turn them into ungodly, brutal beasts on wheels. Vehicles like the Dodge Demon and Ford Mustang are right at home there. But sometimes we see some more elegant makeovers, like the Audi TT Clubsport, which maintains its European charm but still gets a big boost in performance. This year, Gemballa took a similar approach with its widebody GT Concept.

Based on the Porsche 911 Turbo, the GT Concept features lightweight carbon bodywork. Its fenders are 1.2 inches wider in front, and 2.0 inches wider at the rear, making room for wider, stickier wheels. It also includes styling and aerodynamic modifications, including new front and rear bumpers, side skirts, new engine cover with carbon fiber insert, and carbon fiber front spoiler lip, rear diffuser and rear wing.

Gemballa included its own touch to the GT Concept’s interior. It combines selected leather hides and Alcantara, and includes the embroidered Gemballa logo in the floor mats and headrests.

But it’s more than just looks and aero. Gemballa also added gobs of power to the already potent biturbocharged, 3.8-liter boxer engine. It has carbon intake manifolds and air intake housings, larger valves and modified cylinder heads, a sports exhaust, and remapped engine control unit, among other modifications. The result is 828 horsepower and 702 pound-feet of torque. This allows the Gemballa GT Concept to do 0-62 miles per hour in just 2.38 seconds on its way to a top speed of over 223 miles per hour (with the specific top speed to be announced later). Stopping power has been improved with carbon-ceramic brakes with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers in the rear.

Acura NSX ScienceofSpeed Dream Project brings another wing to SEMA

Acura rolled into SEMA last year with its non-hybrid NSX GT3 race car, that FIA spec-series competitor pulled to Vegas on a trailer behind a GT3-themed Acura MDX. Sticking with the GT3 theme this year but going road-legal, Acura worked with Arizona-based ScienceofSpeed on a GT3 package that NSX owners can put in driveways. The result is the lower, more powerful, more wing-y NSX “Dream Project.”

Liquid-cooled injecting for the twin-turbo boosts output, adding 37 horsepower for a total of 610, and another 31 pound-feet of torque to register 507. A lightweight steel exhaust sheds 16 pounds and bestows those magnified numbers with magnified bass. A custom suspension drops the coupe by a little more than an inch, a custom iLIFT suspension add-on automatically raises the front axle two inches if the NSX detects a hurdle.

The ScienceofSpeed aero kit includes all you’d expect from the alphanumeric “GT3:” front strakes, wider rocker panels, larger rear diffuser, a rear wing, gold powdercoated carbon ceramic Brembo brakes, and wider Pirelli Trofeo R tires wrapped around Advan GT forged wheels. Drench the package in two-tone Andaro Nouvelle Blue Pearl and gloss black roof, and the NSX Dream Project’s ready to be driven from climate-controlled garage, to parking-lot car show, back to climate-controlled garage. If the owner decides to test a limit or two, Recaro Pole Position seats and a gaugeART OLED display will keep him locked in and informed.
